Abstract:
This article provides an overview of computer based catalogue systems designed for use by library clients, seeing present day ‘discovery systems’ on the same trajectory as the older ‘online public access catalogues’ (OPACs) which they are gradually replacing, both in technical development and their approach to client use scenarios. It traces the history of the OPAC/discovery system from its origins in the library automation of the 1960s through to the present and discusses the main technical standards which have formed its development. The article goes on to consider questions relating to the usability of electronic library catalogues and highlights semiotic and ethical issues inherent to their design. It concludes with reflections on the future of the OPAC/discovery system in an information universe apparently dominated by the internet search engine.

Abstract:
The behavior of academic library users has drastically changed in recent years. Internet search engines have become the preferred tool over the library online public access catalog (OPAC) for finding information. Libraries are losing ground to online search engines. In this paper, two aspects of OPAC use are studied: (1) the current OPAC interface and searching capabilities, and (2) the OPAC bibliographic display. The purpose of the study is to find answers to the following questions: Why is the current OPAC ineffective? What can libraries and librarians do to deliver an OPAC that is as good as search engines to better serve our users? Revitalizing the library OPAC is one of the pressing issues that has to be accomplished.

Abstract:
This study aims to explore common pitfalls of design and functional issues of Open Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) systems for archives for the general public and suggest solutions to approach such problems. Other than general users, this study also suggests ways to enhance the OPAC system to make it more user-friendly to users with special needs, such as the elderly and children. This paper uses a case study approach to evaluate the usability of the OPAC system in the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA), which is a representative and important archive of its type. The paper provides practical insights on common pitfalls of design and functional issues of OPAC for archives under such context (such as searching user-friendliness) and suggests technical solutions (such as Web 2.0 and more user friendly input devices) to approach such problems. Although we carried out this usability study mainly based on observation without direct interaction with their target users, we already discover adequate and significant problems for the discussions and suggestions in this paper. The paper includes implications and suggestion for archives to improve the usability and functionality of their OPAC systems, which is a key to their public services. Recently, implementing public Web-based access to archives has become popular. However, there are just few usability studies on such OPAC systems, especially for archives facing the general public instead of just professionals.

Abstract:
Conventional traffic-control strategies have limitations in handling unanticipated traffic demands. An adaptive traffic-signal control is expected to mitigate this problem and improve overall system performance. Furthermore, with the increasing needs of evolving intelligent transportation systems, traffic signals are expected to provide significantly greater functionalities, which can be achieved only by adaptive control. A product of many years of development, Optimized Policies for Adaptive Control (OPAC) represents a significant step forward in adaptive signal-control research. The OPAC strategy was field-tested at a New Jersey site. The performance of OPAC was compared against a well-designed time-of-day signal control. The evaluation was performed under various traffic-demand conditions and included both isolated intersections and arterial sections. The analysis indicated a highly significant improvement with OPAC control. OPAC showed its best performance during oversaturated conditions. It reduced the travel time and number of stops by about 26 percent and 55 percent, respectively, for the entire arterial section. OPAC also improved traffic performance during changing demand conditions. It significantly improved the performance of an isolated intersection during undersaturated traffic conditions. OPAC reduced stopped delay on the major-street approach by 40 percent without affecting the minor-street performance.

Abstract:
The British Library launched in 1986 a Catalogue Action Plan to deal with the long-term prospect of declining financial and manpower resources, the absence of growth in the market for its services, an unacceptably large backlog of uncatalogued materials, and a steadily increasing annual output of British publications to be catalogued. The initial phase of the Plan was designed to contain staff costs by reduction and simplification in data content in BNBMARC and other British Library records, predicating their future use primarily in an online (OPAC) environment. It has had significant success for the British Library's aims in the first full year of implementation, but it has raised questions of the cost-benefit in centralized cataloguing services for the library community, in respect both of the costs and sizing of OPAC systems in local libraries and of the necessity of sustaining indefinitely the high cost of adherence to international standards established before OPACs, the CD-ROMs and OSI had changed the technology.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to determine whether features of next-generation Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) interfaces are useful and intuitive to users who have different levels of searching ability. In addition, it investigates whether there is a difference between librarians’ and students’ preferences for specific features. Design/methodology/approach – The research is based on 18 semi-structured interviews conducted in July 2012 with three groups of library users from The University of Sheffield: librarians; Master of Arts Librarianship students; and a group of other post-graduate students. Findings – Overall, this study suggests that while the next-generation catalogue interfaces and features are useful, they are not as “intuitive” as some previous studies have claimed. Interviewees appeared to prefer the searching and browsing options over the Web 2.0 features. Both librarians and students have similar opinions regarding the usefulness of next-generation OPAC features, but preferences are complex. Research limitations/implications – The study is based on one institution, and the disciplinary background of the post-graduate students was limited. Practical implications – Promoting next generation OPACs and explaining their features to users is essential. Originality/value – The paper adds to the understanding of users’ preferences in relation to next-generation OPACs, locating the findings of the current findings firmly in the context of previous literature.

Abstract:
Online Public Access Catalogue is playing a vital role in Central Libraries and University/College Libraries. Most of the College libraries are using OPAC for easy search and retrieval of the books and it's Status in a Particular Library. The main limitation in the OPAC we are using in current system is; that we are able to search and retrieve the information about the books of that particular library, but not outside of it. When we have a scenario like if we have multiple libraries in a campus, if we need to search a book in all the libraries, we have only two possibilities to build OPAC, once to make the single database for all the Libraries or you need to ask the user to search in all OPAC Systems of respective Library manually. But both above solutions are not feasible in real time environment. So in order to have the above scenario a feasible solution we need to build a distributed environment for the OPAC, which will have all the individual databases connected remotely.

Coding and decoding for multiuser communication systems are investigated. For MAAC, we propose a coding scheme of (k + 1)-ary error-correcting signature codes. We give binary and non-binary signature codes. They are the best error-correcting signature codes for MAAC, in the sense that they have highest sum rates known. For TWRC, we propose a low-complexity two-user turbo decoding scheme when turbo codes are applied in two users. The approximate decoding algorithm preserves low decoding complexity over the Gaussian TWRC, without much performance degradation.

The max-plus algebra is the semiring with addition "max" and multiplication "+". In the present thesis, the author gives a combinatorial characterization of solutions of linear systems in terms of the max-plus Cramer's rule. Further, the author extends the concept of eigenvectors of max-plus matrices from two different perspectives.

This thesis presents a thorough analysis on energy supply systems using solar energy and fuel cell cogeneration systems that can operate reliably and independently from the main power grid. A mathematical model to maximize fuel independence for hydrogen micro-grids is developed and simulated for various scenarios in Japanese communities. The viability of implementing such systems is assessed with a review of available hydrogen supply channels, and a study case for a remote Japanese island of medium size. An economic analysis of this study suggests that hydrogen micro-grids are economically competitive for energy supply in remote areas where oil prices are high.

The objective of this research improving the overall performance of MAS by minimizing the time needed to solve the predator-prey problem by evolutionary optimizing (coevolving) both the morphology and behaviour of agents, and minimizing the runtime needed by evolutionary framework – genetic programming to successfully accomplish such a coevolution. The experimental results obtained suggest that an asymmetric morphology of the very simple predator agents coevolved with their intricate “driving” behaviour results in a most efficient behaviour of the agents.

Succinic acid is widely used in many industrial sectors; pharmacy, textile, food, etc. The bio-production of succinic acid from renewable resource was desired because the petrochemical production of succinic acid became costly. In this study, the extraction and separation techniques of succinic acid by liquid membranes (LMs) and aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) containing ionic liquids (ILs) were exploited. The permeation mechanisms and optical conditions were elucidated.

Abstract:
We investigate an approach to apply Genetic Programming for the evolution of optimal escaping strategies of a team of caribou agents in the wolf-caribou predator prey problem (WCPPP) where the WCPPP is comprised of a team of caribou agents attempting to escape from a single yet superior (in terms of sensory abilities, raw speed, and maximum energy) wolf agent in a simulated twodimensional infinite toroidal world. We empirically verify our hypothesis that the incorporation of empathy in caribou agents significantly improves both the evolution efficiency of the escaping behavior and the effectiveness of such a behavior. This finding may be viewed as a verification of the survival value of empathy and the resulting compassionate behavior of the escaping caribou agents. Moreover, considering the fact that a single caribou cannot escape from the superior wolf, the ability of a team of empathic caribou agents to escape may also be viewed as an illustration of the emergent nature of a successful escaping behavior – in that the team-level properties are more than the mere sum of the properties of the individual entities. Within this context, we also present empirical results that verify the complex (nonlinear) nature of the relationship between the size of team of caribou agents and the efficiency of their escaping behavior.

Abstract:
The Master thesis focuses on the application of Information Systems in the field of Library and Information Science.  Within the context of organizational learning, a collaborative user-centered approach is used to produce desired system characteristics and future research suggestions. More specifically, this research study explores the library users’ and academic librarians’ perceptions of the current library discovery and access services as mediated through the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) of the Academic Library of the School of Philosophy at Athens University in Greece. Additionally, it explores their desired characteristics for the ‘public facing’ Integrated Library System (ILS), of which the OPAC constitutes a module, in order to generate recommendations that guide the Academic Library staff members’ collaborative design of a more user-centered library information system. The study is built upon the systems thinking framework of Checkland’s Soft Systems Methodology (SSM). Applied theories and design processes guide research processes aimed at advancing both inclusive social learning and system improvements.

A number of single microorganisms and microbial consortia, carrying out the destruction of organophosphorus compounds (OPC) by using their own enzymatic systems, were identified and investigated. They can use OPC as a source of nutrients such as carbon and/or phosphorus. The rate of OPC decomposition varies and depends mainly on environmental conditions (pH, temperature, availability of oxigen, etc.) and composition of native microbial community. The development of genetically modified organisms capable of degrading OPC, the immobilization of cells and the creation of artificial consortia are approaches that increase the efficiency of biodegradation of OPC.

Abstract:
Various types of electrochemical sensors based on the inhibition of butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) have been presented for the analysis of organophosphates (OPC). A special design of thick film sensors and electrochemical detector for cholinesterases assay and their inhibitors in aqueous samples has been developed. For this assay, thiol sensitive sensors based on screen printed graphite electrode modified with nanoparticles of manganese dioxide were used. High sensitivity of manganese dioxide modified thick film sensors towards thiocholine and therefore low detection limit of BChE (1 pM) enabled their use for subnanomolar detection of an organophosphate pesticide diazinon, and other irreversible inhibitors of BChE. This work also presents modern innovative approach for the analysis of BChE by Raman spectroscopy. New SERS-substrates based on silver paste for sensitive quantification of BChE activity were obtained, characterized and applied to thiocholine detection, with LOD (TCh) being 260 nM. Real samples of human plasma were analyzed; a good correlation between spectrophotometric detection and Raman detection was shown. The developed technique is inexpensive and easy-to-use and has promising potential for analysis of OPC.

Abstract:
Many time-resolved spectroscopy techniques require two broadly and independently tunable, synchronised light pulses. Recent advances in short pulse laser technology and non-linear crystal materials have lead to rapid development of optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) and travelling wave optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs) capable of meeting these requirements. Our aim was to develop a multi-kilohertz repetition rate OPA system for femtosecond/picosecond, pump and probe time-resolved absorption and resonance Raman spectroscopies. We believe this work reports, for the first time, on synchronously pumped travelling wave OPAs. The design similar to that described in [1] was adopted for the development of the OPAs.

Abstract:
Optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs) have been used to extend the wavelength range available from amplified Ti:sapphire lasers [1,2]. These systems typically produce 100 fsec pulses throughout the visible and near infrared. Recently, there has been much interest in generating wavelengths beyond 3 μm, often by means of difference frequency mixing [3]. Direct generation of pulses from an OPA however, offers the potential for higher energy. We report, for the first time, generation of 3 to 5 μm pulses directly from a potassium niobate (KNbO3) OPA pumped by an amplified Ti:sapphire laser [4].

Full text
Abstract:
Schools and school systems are experiencing an instructional support gap that results in limited opportunities for educators to analyze, reflect on and improve research-based practices for ELLs so that outcomes for culturally and linguistically diverse students can change. To address this need, an inter-disciplinary research team from the Center for Equity for English Learners, comprised of educational leaders, teachers, researchers, and content experts developed a classroom observational instrument—the Observation Protocol for Academic Literacies (OPAL). The OPAL is intended for teachers, educational leaders, coaches, and others to conduct focused classroom observations for three potential purposes: research/evaluation, professional development, and coaching. In this article the authors introduce the OPAL’s research base, describe how to use the OPAL tool, and provide examples of the applied use of the OPAL to support professional learning and evaluate a three-year school reform effort.

Abstract:
This case study provides exploratory research into the personal journeys of forced recruits into Boko Haram, to examine how they entered the organization, the conditions they experienced in camps and settlements, their exits from the group, their subsequent experiences in state hands, and their perspectives about future reintegration. These themes are particularly pertinent given the mass disengagements from Boko Haram in spring 2022, and the extent to which federal and state systems lack the capacity to absorb and handle the large numbers involved. Research was undertaken at Operation Safe Corridor (OPSC), a program established in 2016 by the Nigerian state to provide an off-ramp for members of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) deemed to be ‘low risk’ by military intelligence. Located at Mallam Sidi on the outskirts of Gombe, the OPSC program houses cohorts of around six hundred clients at any point in time. This report features the findings from thirteen in-depth interviews with participants in the OPSC program to provide important insights into the state-sponsored off-ramp from this group.
