Abstract:
Compared with full translation and based on a large number of translation variation phenomena, variational translation is a discourse of native translation studies with Chinese characteristics. After twenty years of development and research, the research scope of variational translation theory has gradually expanded and improved, but the literature review in recent years has lagged behind. Based on some well-known literature databases at home and abroad, Citespace, a bibliometric analysis tool, was used to review and visualize the development of variational translation theory at home and abroad in the past 20 years. The analysis data covered 760 relevant literatures. Based on the relevant data, the research frontiers and trends of variational translation theory are forecasted, and the new research fields of this theory in both theoretical and empirical research are explored. The existing problems in variational translation theory are summarized, and some feasible considerations about the construction and dissemination of Chinese native translation discourse are proposed.

Abstract The increasing use of multilingualism in audiovisual products, especially feature films, has attracted attention from audiovisual translation (AVT) scholars; however, such research is missing in the Chinese AVT context. This paper strived to fill this niche by exploring the common methods of the rendition of a third language (L3) in Chinese dubbing, subtitling, and fansubbing. The corpus of the study comprised six English-speaking feature films alongside their fan and professional-created Chinese subtitles and dubs available online, and its contents was mainly selected based on two criteria: (i) the L3s used, for example, French, Indian, Swahili, Xhosa, and Russian, and (ii) the availability of fan and pro-produced Chinese subtitles and dubs. For dubbing, the analysis of the corpus revealed that the Chinese professional dubbing team marked the L3s in a few cases but applied translational patterns inconsistently. the comparison of the pro- and fansubs demonstrated that both did not mark the L3s in their translations and that professional subtitlers performed better than the fansubbers in the rendition of multilingualism in terms of graphic codes and the original films’ storytelling.

In recent years, Chinese translatology has put forward a new issue in the general theory of translation, translation adaptation. This paper, using the case study method, takes the novel “Bronze and Sunflower” by Cao Wenxuan, and its Russian translation as an example to reveal that the Chinese original undergoes translation adaptation at the genre level, language organization level, cultural level, pragmatic level and aesthetic level. This not only verifies the universality of translation adaptation once again, but also provides an example analysis for the effective translation of Chinese literature into Russian, which has important reference significance for the translation of Chinese literature into other foreign languages.

This article examines the Sinologists’ conceptually mediated approach in their studies and translations of Chinese literature in the nineteenth century. Gems of Chinese Literature (1884), compiled and translated by Herbert Allen Giles (1845–1935), contains the English translation of 110 Chinese prose extracts and eight poems from fifty-nine Chinese authors. This article historicizes the genesis and construction of this translation anthology and argues that, though most likely derived from a Chinese guwen (classical prose) collection, it was designed to provide a more systematic view of Chinese literature informed by the concept of national literature. By analysing its organizational strategies, discursive paratexts, and how it deviated from its possible Chinese source, the author demonstrates that Gems of Chinese Literature reveals more complex questions concerning the (re-)conceptualization and representation of Chinese literature at the encounter of Chinese and Western literary paradigms.

Chinese online literature has attracted wide overseas attention over the past decade. As a newly emerging form of literature in the twenty-first century, the ‘digitalness’ of this literary form enables its translators to overcome the cultural gap and introduce this subculture to the rest of the world. The translation of Chinese online literature plays a significant role in its worldwide dissemination, greatly facilitates the promotion of Chinese culture and also sheds new light on multimedia translation studies. This article will focus attention on the translation of Chinese online literature in the anglophone world, aiming to map out a detailed overview of its overseas journey, namely how it made its way to the anglophone audience, to elaborate on the role of translation in this process, and how the translation of Chinese online literature facilitates the reception of the novels and contributes to their popularity outside China. Finally, this article argues that the human translation of online literature, tailored to this digital form, could bring insights into the promotion of Chinese culture and also into studies on multimedia translation.

The internationalization of literature manifests achievement of source language literature and witnesses the target language readers’ requirement of understanding the source language country. Moreover, it reflects the developments and changes on international strategies and relationships. The translation of Chinese literature to Spanish began from 1949, but the first translation from Chinese original edition arose in 1978. Taciana Fisac is one of the first Chinese-Spanish translators in Spain. All her translations were translated from Chinese original edition since Lu Xun’s “Argument” and “Such soldiers” in 1982. Although it is much more difficult, this translation mode is closer to target reader’s habit, and forms personal translation method. This methodology requires translator’s overall grasp and connoisseurship of source literature as well as literature expression and culture delivery ability in target language. Besides, it not only pays attention to source language literatures narrative style, but also considers target language reader’s reception psychology and expression. Taciana Fisac’s translation enriched theory of literature<br />translation, and made significant contribution for internationalization of Chinese modern and contemporary literature.

In the history of mankind, translation has played an important role in popularizing the individual achievements of different civilizations among other nations. This rings true about the Chinese translated literature in Bulgaria and the Bulgarian translated literature in China. The article focuses on individual books as it is extremely challenging to include in this collection the translations published in magazines and newspapers. The translation of Chinese and Bulgarian literature had prolific periods marked by significant accomplishments. It is worth looking back at those works on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between China and Bulgaria. Both the translation of Chinese literature in Bulgaria and the translation of Bulgarian literature in China are taken into consideration, paying specific attention to the main titles, authors and their publication. The publishing houses specializing in culture and art in the two countries occupy the larger part of the book market. It may be concluded that all these translations tend to give spiritual food to the Chinese and Bulgarian readers. Although they introduce the people to a different tradition, culture and civilization, the choice of the main themes can be interpreted as a sign of a common taste for values and beauty.

The diasporic translator Chi-Chen Wang did much to disseminate modern Chinese literature in the West. This article draws attention to Chinese diasporic translators in the West in the 1940s through the neglected figure of Chi-Chen Wang (1899-2001). This paper of Chi-Chen Wang is an integrated study of two perspectives, an overview of present studies on Wang’s translation and a detailed analysis on Wang’s translation principles by examining his translation revisions. The research finds out that Wang’s translations in the 1940s years centered on socially conscious types of writing, which bear a close relationship to his sympathy and expectation for China. Wang was guided by the principles of both capturing the original flavor and enhancing the readability of the target text.

This article surveys the available English translations of contemporary Chinese literature from the People's Republic. In view of the post-Mao Party policy of relative freedom for creative writing, more works are pouring out of China than ever before. Of the most recent translations, the largest share belongs to Panda Books, a publishing subunit of the Foreign Languages Press in Beijing. Under the leadership of the Yangs (Xianyi and Gladys), a husband-and-wife team of great renown, this new Panda series has published more than a dozen titles as of 1984, and new ones continue to be received.Despite its voluminous production, the editors of the Panda series have made certain choices that are of dubious value. Especially weak is the representation of traditional literary works, which are often drastically abridged or collected in slender anthologies. In comparison, coverage of modern and contemporary works is more exciting. The translations are generally correct, the most felicitous from the hands of Gladys Yang. However, the translations suffer from a certain uniformity of style and sometimes from severe cuts. Volumes in the series are nevertheless a useful addition to the increasing library of English translations of contemporary Chinese literature, now more than adequate for an undergraduate course.

In order to improve the effect of the mutual translation of Chinese and Korean literature, this article combines the semantic analysis technology to analyze the mutual translation of Chinese and Korean literature. Moreover, this article explores the analysis of Chinese and Korean literature mutual translation through intelligent semantic analysis methods and analyzes the theoretical basis of densely connected networks based on the semantic analysis and verification methods of densely connected networks and multilayer attention. Finally, this article implements semantic matching verification through the densely connected BiLSTM structure and adds a multilayer attention mechanism to the network to better interact with sentences to obtain the semantic relationship of sentences. The simulation analysis shows that the Chinese and Korean literature mutual translation system based on semantic analysis proposed in this article has a good translation effect and can effectively promote Sino-Korean literature exchanges.

As a bridge between Chinese culture and western readers, online literature translation has become a new way to spread Chinese culture. Therefore, the translation of online literature has also received more and more attention from the translation community. The environment is an important element in the novel, and the description of the environment provides the necessary background for the development of the plot of the novel. The book "Dragon Prince Yuan" contains a large number of environmental descriptions, which require special attention of the translator in translation. From the perspective of eco-translatology, discussing this kind of environmental description translation can reveal the characteristics and problems of the translator in transmitting the original function and reproducing the original effect. Based on the perspective of eco-translatology, this paper analyzes and discusses the translation of the environmental description in the Chinese fantasy novel "Dragon Prince Yuan" in order to provide reference for the English translation of Chinese online novels.

Chinese translations of U.S. literature manifest a shift from the third-world internationalism and anti-Western and anti-capitalist politics of the 1950s toward a diminished rhetorical antagonism in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Because translation introductions are instrumental in introducing Chinese readers to the social context of U.S. literature, we surveyed a broad sample of prefaces. Based on this survey, we theorize China-U.S. translation relations within a world system; examine the ideological character of post-Revolution translation introductions to American literature; and identify shifting ideological tides following the Cultural Revolution.

Classical Chinese poetry has become a brilliant jewel in the history of Chinese literature due to its unique beauty of rhythm and rich ideological connotations, and has become an indispensable part of Chinese civilization. High-quality English translations of poetry can help the world to better understand Chinese literature and gain a more comprehensive understanding of Chinese civilization, thereby promoting cultural exchanges between countries. Translation transformation theory was proposed by John Catford in the 1960s, who divided it into hierarchical transformation and categorical transformation, and systematically expounded the rationale for transformation phenomena in The Linguistic Theory of Translation. Practice has proved that translation transformation theory has important guiding significance for the translation process. This article takes Mr. Xu Yuanchong’s translation of classical Chinese poetry into English as an example to explore the transformation phenomenon in the process of text translation and the guiding significance of translation transformation theory for the translation of classical Chinese poetry, attempting to provide some reference for excellent English translations of traditional Chinese culture.

This paper conducted a systematic literature review of the previous studies within China and other countries within the period from October 2014 to July 2023 with the purpose of investigating the research foci on the English translation of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China. This study revealed that scholars in Chinese Mainland mainly focused on three fields: research on translation strategies of political documents, cultural translation in foreign publicity translation, the external dissemination of political documents and the construction of national image. Besides, an emerging field with discourse analysis-related theories to explore discourse theory paradigms, evaluate discourse quality, and conduct corpus analysis of discourse has provided multivariant academic thinking in translation studies. Compared with Chinese scholars&rsquo; studies, there was minimal discussion about the foreign scholars&rsquo; exploration of the translation strategies and methods or other translation-related topics, which implied the urgent need of mutual academic communication between Chinese scholars and the foreign academic circles to promote the further development of Chinese political document translation studies.

Chi-Chen Wang (1899-2001) is a trailblazer in promoting Chinese literature in the West and is also one of the earliest scholars who made modern Chinese literature known to the Westerners. As a both renowned writer and translator in the West, Chi-Chen Wang&rsquo;s translation motivation, his comment on modern Chinese literature together with the social background of his translation activities has a great influence on his choice of translation strategies. The study provides a detailed discussion on Wang&rsquo;s choice of translation strategies by analyzing his translation motivation, the cultural and political climate of his translation activities as well as his own literary judgments. And the textual analysis of his translation reveals that Wang&rsquo; translations incline to retain the foreignness in the source text and revise the original texts through condensation and deletion.

Abstract This paper explores the complexity of translation of borderland literature through a case study of the Japanese and Chinese translations of the Korean short story “The Red Hill.” Written by the renowned Korean writer Kim Tong-in (김동인, 1900–1951) in 1932, this story features the Korean agrarian community in the Northeast Asian borderland of Manchuria and is conventionally considered a masterpiece of Korean national literature. When it was translated into Japanese and Chinese and anthologized in inland Japan and the Japanese Manchukuo respectively, the three texts of the same story in three languages conveyed different and contradictory national/imperial claims over Manchuria, a Northeast Asian frontier. This case study demonstrates how the very act of translating and anthologizing, as a process of linguistic transposition across cultural and national constituencies, may crystallize the sense of territorial competition through revealing, reshuffling, and redefining the covert intricacy of national relations in the original text.

Abstract:
The translation activity of the founder of revolutionary Chinese literature, Jiang Guangci, is considered. The novelty of the study is due to the fact that the translations of Russian and Soviet literature by Jiang Guangci are almost not studied in scientific circles. The relevance of the study is due to the importance of building and strengthening Chinese-Russian cultural ties, including in the field of translation of fiction, in which Jiang Guangci was successful in the 20s of the XX century. It has been established that Jiang Guangci’s translations corresponded to his revolutionary ideals, which he embodied in his original works. It is noted that Jiang Guangci's worldview determined his choice of Russian and Soviet works embodying revolutionary ideals for translation. It is shown that his translations received wide support from young people due not only to the content, but also to the simple, understandable language of presentation. The participation of Jiang Guangci in the literary discussion about the translation strategy is presented. Due to his good knowledge of the Russian, he made translations from the original, and not from Japanese translations of Russian works. The authors come to the conclusion that the translation activity of Jiang Guangci has not been sufficiently studied and has prospects for study.

Homosexuality has always been a sensitive topic, a taboo in many social contexts. Recent literature has witnessed burgeoning academic attention in the translation of gay literature in the past two decades, while the translation of Chinese gay literature has remained largely unattended. This paper aims to study the translations, reprints and cross-medium retranslations of the modern Chinese founding works of gay literature, Nie Zi (Crystal Boys). The Chinese literary piece has been translated into English and reprints of the translation have appeared in U.S.A. and Hong Kong over the last three decades. It has also been adapted into film production, TV series and a stage performance. With the modern technology, these adaptation productions have been translated and fansubbed for the international audience. This paper will look at the translation of the title, the cover design, the back blurbs and the textual nuances as well for the book translation and its reprints. The fansubbed subtitle translations will also be scrutinized within the framework of retranslation. The English translation, reprints, cross-medium retranslation of Nie Zi proves to be a supporting case of what Harvey calls “gayed translation”, through labelling strategies and other non-linguistic resources proposed by Mona Baker.

Abstract As an essential part of the “Globalization of Chinese Culture” strategy, the translation of Chinese fiction into English has gained more significance and deserves more academic attention. Through making a survey of Chinese fiction in English translation from 1978 to 2018, the article not only presents different trajectories of the development of Chinese fiction in English translation in mainland China and the English-speaking countries but also shows that different canons of Chinese fiction in English translation have been formed in the course of this development. Reasons for the formation of the prevailing canon(s) are explored and explained from perspectives taking into account concrete factors such as ideology, poetics and patronage as well as influences of the literary award mechanism. Based on this description and explanation, the article concludes with a few suggestions for the future development of cultural activity of introducing Chinese literature into English-speaking countries.

Canaan Morse's translation of the novella Renmian Taohua, rendered as Peach Blossom Paradise, was the first translation of Chinese literature shortlisted for the National Book Award for Translated Literature. This paper takes a descriptive approach to examine Morse's translation strategies and methods of rendering the intertextual representations of the source text with the aid of the analytical model proposed by Charles Bazerman. Through close reading, analysis, and comparison, this study indicates that struggling with the inherent tension between foreignization and domestication, Morse used two types of translation methods: retaining the intertextual representations of the source text; intertextually connecting the target text with target language texts or previous English translations of Chinese literature. Whichever method is chosen, the target text is always faithful to the source text at the semantic or functional level. The choice of translation strategies and methods were influenced by both individual and sociocultural factors including the translator's view on literary translation, the marginal position held by Chinese literature within the Western literary systems, and the unbalanced exchanges between China and the West.

The study of classical poetry translation has become a hot topic in Chinese literary translation. This paper aims to study the translatability of Chinese classical poetry from the perspective of the translation strategies of Xu Yuanchong by selecting lyrics titled everlasting longing in the Chinese-English Translation of 300 Chinese Tang and Song Lyrics authored by Xu Yuanchong, an outstanding translator. In the translation of Xu Yuanchongs poems, he emphasized the beauty of meaning, form and sound. Through a theoretical overview of important translation strategies and case study of the translation strategies adopted by Xu Yuanchong, the following conclusions are drawn: Xu Yuanchongs translation strategy of creative translation has greatly improved the translatability of classical Chinese poetry. Due to the particularity of the poetry style and literary form, the semantic meaning loss can be caused to a certain extent, so the translation strategy oriented by functional equivalence and aesthetic pursuit can provide the reference for the translation of Chinese classical poems and lyrics.

Following the critical acclaim of Sino-French literature in recent years, an increasing number of Chinese presses have solicited translations of prize-winning novels written in French by authors of Chinese descent. Yet as the work of authors like François Cheng, Shan Sa, Ya Ding and Dai Sijie travels from French into Chinese, it also undergoes a transformation via the politics of translation and publication in China. This essay exposes the inner workings of translation between French and Chinese, as well as the politics that colour its publication and reception between France and China. The act of translating these works back into their authors’ native tongue signals a return to the national paradigms the writers initially sought to evade by writing in French. Translation here functions as a form of aggression, a forced return home that ultimately breaks with the poetic ethos that animates the original creative works.

In recent years, we have come to see translation studies as intimately intertwined with queer theory. The interpenetration of the two fields has stimulated significant shifts in how we understand both the nature and the uses of queering social identities and categories. It has also illuminated the complex and nuanced ways in which desire, sexuality, and gender are inscribed in languages and translation. If the word queer is significant both for its “celebration of difference” and in its “reappropriation of the language used by the heterosexist culture,” then the meanings that queer acquires in its translation both to and from non-English linguistic and cultural codes are particularly useful for the study of how queer goes beyond universal notions, fixed identities, or default categories. Translation is “comparably indeterminate and similarly imbricated with issues of gender and sexuality, playfulness, and power.” In this article, I discuss the relationship between queer and translation, and the implications of this relationship for the queering of translation, through textual analysis of the translated, transferred, transmitted representations male same-sex desire and practices, particularly fetishism and sadomasochism, in Taiwanese queer literature from the 1990s. That decade saw an unprecedented flowering of queer literature in Taiwan and, as such, provides a fascinating case study in the historical and social development of the global circulation of queer theory across languages and cultures. I centre my discussion around two seminal texts, Ta-wei Chi’s short story anthology 膜 (The Membranes, 1996) and Chu T’ien-Wen’s novel 荒人手記 (Notes of A Desolate Man, 1994), and draw on William J. Spurlin’s (2017) rethinking of gender and sexual politics in the spaces between languages and cultures, Brian James Baer’s (2020) application of queer theory to translation studies and Douglas Robinson’s (2020) formulation of “equivalencefuck.” I argue that their insights enable an approach to the queering of translation that incorporates queer theory into the theory and practice of translation by understanding translation as essentially a queer praxis that simultaneously fucks with linguistic and cultural binaries on the one hand and with sexual and gender binaries on the other. While fucking binaries plays a vital role in critiquing what is fetishized as source-target equivalence in translation, considering translation as a queer praxis demonstrates that the conjunction of queer and translation offers “new sites of heterogeneity and difference.” Thus, I argue that bringing queer theory to translation and translation studies disrupts some of the foundational assumptions about translation. In turn, this offers new opportunities to queer how we think about sexual and gender difference, cultural dissimilitude, and linguistic diversity in both translation practice and translation studies.

Contact between Portuguese and Chinese began as early as the 16th century. As the relations between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries developed, translations between the two languages have flourished, particularly in literature. It is important to note that, in this domain, direct translation as well as indirect translation has been active options. Translation via a third language has been a frequent method used by Portuguese-Chinese translators – not only in the early days of their burgeoning contact but also well into the twentieth-first century. This paper analyses the translation of the novella O Assassino, which fictions the assassination of the Portuguese Governor Ferreira do Amaral in Macau. The story was originally written in Chinese, then translated into English and then into Portuguese. It happens that the Portuguese version was translated via the English. The aim of this article is to analyze both versions from a comparative perspective and to discuss the translation of culture-specific concepts in the indirect translation context.
