Abstract:
Michel Foucault characterizes power as ubiquitous and productive in the sense that there is no power-free truth, subject, and knowledge. Moreover, he studies the historical conditions of truth and subject to have an existence in a way that he historicizes them rather than delineating truth as corresponding to reality and subject as a self-subsistent and ahistorical substance. In this respect, his anti-essentialist account of power, truth, and subject is criticized on the account that he excludes the possibility of resistance against power through deconstructing any firm ground which is absolutely free from history and power and thus a promising substratum on which resistance can be substantiated. In this study, I will argue that these criticisms are ill-founded because they are either based on the misunderstandings of Foucauldian account of power or functioning with an assumption that resistance entails essentialist metaphysics as a ground, the assumption which is itself devoid of justification. Moreover, I will claim that it is an anti-essentialist ground&

Abstract:
The driving argument of this thesis is that states, particularly the United States, are vulnerable in cyberspace for reasons that go beyond the material vulnerabilities that present studies on state insecurity in cyberspace focus on. This vulnerability in cyberspace is an ontological insecurity. Ontological insecurity reveals itself in the contradictions in official state discourse regarding cyberspace. State security of self—preserving and maintaining the seemingly concrete and consistent nature of what a state is about, how the state is understood in relation to other states, and how the state comes to understand itself through its own conceptions of self-identity—is challenged by cyberspace as a vehicle for massive amounts of information and challenges to state identity in relation to the state's behavior in cyberspace. Therefore, state identity and self-image are challenged in relation to cyberspace in two ways: first, through the vehicle that is cyberspace, and, second, through the practices that the state adopts to secure cyberspace and its broader security aims. The language that states, in this case the United States, use in order to justify surveillance practices and to impose meaning to cyberspace ultimately leads to projections of power that attempt to reinforce state strength and legitimacy vis-à-vis cyberspace, but these attempts fall short; contradictions arise in state discourse, and weaknesses are highlighted through these contradictions. Cyberspace, then, is an ontological as well as physical security threat to states.

This work investigates the being of the subject that is made out of a correlation between the individuals relation with himself and the historical events in the field of knowledge and power of his era. On the one hand, subjectivity is always correlated to certain models which are due to the way of thinking of an era and the forces of power that can standardize or even impose this way of thinking; on the other, there is always room for a possible freedom where individuals can build themselves as subject independent of those models.

Abstract:
The Arctic region is changing. This is an oft-cited statement researcher, policy-makers and the general public say about the Arctic. But who can change the Arctic order? This academic paper is interested in determine Greenland’s role and ‘actorness’ in this changeable region. Adopting an interpretivist approach, I advocate to embrace the narrative turn in IR as a useful move to understand how Greenland, as a sub-state regional entity, can enhance its agency capacity in Arctic affairs. Using phronetical case study, govermentality and narrative analysis as main methodologies, this study decipher how the Arctic governance has changed and been shaped by different narratives and governmental practices. Greenland’s possibilities to exercise more power have been analysed through the lenses of ontological security theory because this theory is intimately related to human agency. However, this theory presents several challenges that must be overcome by doing a revision of the theory. The final results are discusses in a reflexive manner adopting four phronetical value-rational questions that policy-makers should take into account when planning any relevant strategic action, such as Greenland’s visibility and empowerment in Arctic affairs.

This work aims to investigate the relations between Foucault s analysis about Enlightenment and the concept elaborated by him of critique attitude. The analysis of Enlightenment backs itself on the Kant s text Was ist Aufklärung?, published at the year of 1874. It is intended to put in evidence the meaning of the notion called ontology of the present, which can be defined as permanent inquiring of the present. So that, this work tries to bring forward a discussion in which the knowledge and the power relationships developed in our society are confronted, making possible the emergence of forms of autonomy and liberty

First, we will determine what Nietzsche understands by metaphysics in the intermediate period of his philosophical production. After we acquire this understanding, we will show the criticisms made by the philosopher about the metaphysics, prevailing in his youth work about the truth and falsehood in the extra-moral sense. Finally, the proposal of the metaphysics overcoming will be analyzed based in four large interpretative references: the negative realism of becoming, the neokantianism, the substantive naturalism and the ontological proposal of the will to power. We will test the legitimacy of each one of these interpretations from two main questions: What is the ontological status of the becoming in the Nietzsches philosophy? Why the Philosopher asserts that our categories are only fictions?

Referir a potência à negatividade da relação soberana (nas suas várias configurações e contextos histórico-temporais) mas também à instituição da vontade e à capacidade de agir é, precisamente, o propósito essencial desta exposição; ABSTRACT: Potency and sovereign power on Giorgio Agamben’s Political Onthology Giorgio Agamben is today one of the leading figures of contemporary thought and debate. His influence is widespread in several fields, from Aesthetics to Politics, amassing supporters and critics both within and outside Philosophy and its conceptual domain. To situate and propose a critical analysis of the trajectory of the category of potency in Agamben’s work, especially in his political legacy, we need to establish not only its pervasiveness and how it relates to actuality but the changes it sets in motion. We need to start by clarifying how potency has come to integrate another stance of approach (in the later works), with the emergence of the central issues of how potency comes into operativity and hence into productive action. This dissertation’s main purpose is precisely to trace potency to the negativity of the sovereignty relationship (in its diverse historical configurations and contexts), as well as to the establishment of the will and the ability to act.

This study is in response to globalisation, changing world values and the call in modern literature for leaders of good character. Servant-leadership is offered to fill this requirement because its effectiveness is said to be reliant on the good character of the leader. In the literature this type of leadership is said to represent a new paradigm. The work of servant-leadership’s proponent, Robert Greenleaf, is thoroughly examined to explain how his understanding of trust as faith is linked to spirituality and this is the key to understanding the character of servant-leaders. Greenleaf’s work is compared with the modern servant-leadership literature and identifies a gap in the literature explaining Greenleaf’s spirituality. This is a qualitative analysis using classical Grounded Theory and uses the work of Anthony Giddens to give it a modern sociological grounding. Classical Grounded Theory uses typologies or “created groups” to give meaning to the way in which participants view their circumstance. The application of Giddens’ work allows for the data analysis to incorporate the historical social context that has shaped the views of the participants. Greenleaf and Giddens share the same understanding of trust and this alignment of Giddens and Greenleaf permeates the work. Giddens identifies two types of trust, which this research has termed Reciprocal Trust, and Trust as Principle. The research gives an explanation of the two types of trust and argues that understanding Trust as Principle is the key to understanding new paradigm thought. It is also the key to understanding character in terms of servant-leadership character. The research for this thesis was carried out in an organisation that until recently had been a government entity and for the purpose of this research is given the fictitious name of Railcorp. The historical circumstances of Railcorp have led to major dysfunctions, which are inhibiting the business progress of the company. There is a crisis of culture and a crisis in leadership. There is evidence of servant-leadership existing in Railcorp and these leaders have a vital role in providing the new leadership required to take Railcorp forward.

_______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
Agamben´s theory proposes that the ontological nature of law and politics is directly linked to the sovereign production of biopolitics, essentially grounded on the suspension of law. He does not present, however, which roles the judicial branch of power, the Constitution and the judicial review would have in the implementation of contemporary biopolitics and of a State of Exception. This thesis intends to develop Agamben´s own theoretical conclusions in light of the mentioned omission, based on the hypothesis that, if Agamben is correct in his opinion that the concentration camp´s biopolitical paradigm is the actual underlying structural rule in western democracies, then the judicial branch and the Constitution collaborate somehow to the suspension of law and to the definition of modern-day biopolitical spaces.

The present dissertation aims the theme of ontological negativity constitutive of human existence in the work Being and Time of Martin Heidegger. In the first part, we examine the descriptions made by Heidegger in the first section of Being and Time about the dynamics of the existential man understood as being-there (Dasein). Initially is shown the negative character of existence. To do that, we start with the reconstruction of existence concepts and its intentional characteristcs and able to be (Seinkonnen) in Being and Time. In the second part, the analysis of the affective tone of anguish is the starting point to get to the mode of being of man, described carefully by Heidegger (Sorge). We also argue that caution is the only way to be compatible with an entity that in its own way of being is marked by an radical negativity (incomplete). Finally, in the third chapter, we present, in its general features, the possibility compatible with the character of able to be of the being-there: the possibility of death, ontologically understood as being-for-death. In the conclusion, we pointed the greatest interest of Heidegger in his investigation of existential dynamics of the being-there. This interest consist in to visualize, through what Heidegger calls of existential crisis of being-there (provided by the anguish) the genesis point of the ontologies.

This dissertation aims to comprehend the analytics carried out by the French philosopher Michel Foucault in his lectures at the Collège de France entitled The Birth of Biopolitics (1978-79) regarding the neoliberal art of government. We seek to apprehend the relation between the analyses of Neoliberalism and other moments and concepts of the foucauldian bibliographical production, such as the notions of biopolitics, governmentality and disciplinary power. In order to accomplish such task, we approach several works written by Foucault, such as The order of things (1966), Discipline and punish (1975), The History of sexuality volume 1 The will to knowledge (1976), as well as the lectures Society must be defended (1975-76) and Security, Territory, Population (1977-78). To conclude, this text also contributes to the study of Neoliberalism as a whole, emphasizing the paths opened by Foucaults theory and pointing beyond an exercise of theoretical exegesis of the foucauldian philosophical experience.

Abstract:
One might put forward that the Humes Guillotine relates to a set of philosophical discussions about the primacy either of the being (Sein) or of the ought-to (Sollen) in order to ground normative propositions (and, eventually, their validity and enforcement). This work focuses on the analysis of the Humes Guillotine under the perspective of the phenomenological (existential) ontology, in which the dichotomy between the ought-to and the being will be redirected, specifically in light of the ethical and juridical analysis that will be carried out, to the dichotomy necessity/possibility, such as proposed by the philosophical tradition on examining the modalities (being-real/reality, being-possible/possibility and being-necessary/necessity). At the beginning it will be maintained that the discussions over the ought-to are usually embedded with a narrative totally dependent on the being-necessary, which in fact could not be applied to those beings that can be different from what they are. In the end, the existential may-be (freedom) will be considered as the original ground (Ur-sprung Ab-grund) of the being-legal, as reveled through dramatic and everyday decisions, which are not restricted to technical and sacerdotal ones.

The leitmotif of this dissertation research is on the relationship between two fields of questioning in the Foucauldian works that may be considered, at a first glance, irreconcilable: the understanding of subject as the result of determinations, on the one hand, and its ethical stance of seeking the creation of liberty, on the other. Since, despite this apparent inconsistency, both ideas are present with much emphasis on the work of the French thinker, to understand the way Foucault articulated these two ideas was necessary to elucidate and interrelate the way in which he thought about the concepts of subject, power and liberty. Traveling with the author his intellectual itinerary, it was revealed that his conception of subject and liberty can be reconciled (although maintaining its problematic nature) and, also, both are inextricably linked each one as a result of the other. Tracing, with the author, his intellectual itinerary, it was also possible to identify and describe the fruitful conceptual tools for thinking about our own determinations and about the possibilities we have of creating new subjectivities and liberating experiences

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are networks with limited resources such as processing, bandwidth, memory, and most importantly, energy. Thus, applications for sensor nodes must create conditions to perform their sensing and processing operations as long as possible, as well as mechanisms that can help to save energy, for example, such as the use of better algorithms, data aggregation, self-management mechanisms, among others, in compliance the resource limitations of WSN. Some research in the area show that solving this problem is not an easy task to be addressed. Thus, this paper proposes a power saving solution for WSN and a common way of sharing data between different applications and networks based on a Semantic Infrastructure for WSN called SITRUS. It uses parametric reconfiguration in sensor nodes at runtime, from sensing data processed outside the WSN using ontologies developed for this purpose for processing such data. SITRUS consists of two major parts: RAMSES, responsible for data transport and service management applications that run on the sensor nodes; and SIP, which is intended to categorize the data for generating the semantic database. This database will serve for decision making on the reconfiguration of sensor nodes and for query processing on WSNs. The choice for this model is due to the fact that the processing related to the reconfiguration of WSN does not suffer human intervention. Processing is determined by SIP and performed by RAMSES. Thus, it follows a model based on formal semantics. It is intended that the SITRUS encourages the integration of different applications by sharing data on a same context. The benefits of this approach include the enrichment of the data by the association of its meaning, and not only by the syntax of the data, thus facilitating their access and eliminating ambiguities. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of SITRUS, an experimental evaluation of power consumption with some applications and different scenarios was performed, and the results shows that SITRUS serves to what has been proposed in regard to management of the energy consumption.

Abstract:
In the post-WWII era, industrialized global aid powers defined and codified development initiatives through the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). However, the late 20th and early 21st centuries witnessed a shift in the global balance of power toward the Indo-Pacific region with the rise of Asian powers. In 1989, Japan emerged as a leader among established OECD-DAC nations and asserted a unique development philosophy in addressing African development issues. In the 21st century, the growth in foreign development diplomacy by South-South partners, most notably the People’s Republic of China (PRC, China) and India, has challenged the material and ontological foundations of “aid” and development. This thesis leverages a realist-constructivist framework to analyze the characteristics of Japan, China, and India’s strategic engagement in Africa as a new form of development power. The analysis reveals how the development narratives of Asian powers have disrupted the established norms and principles of OECD-DAC donorrecipient relationships, development archetypes, and core values. The three Asian donors cultivate unique portfolios of ontological, material, and soft power paradigms that are reshaping established 20th century OECD-DAC aid constructs. Distinct from 20th century constructs, this new mode of development cooperation is bolstered by the cultivation of a shared historical context and social values that bind African states and peoples with Asian brands. In an era of shifting global power, Japan, China, and India have forged an alternative mechanism to engage with and shape the international order via development cooperation. Engagement with Africa’s 54 diverse nations, regional blocs, and the African Union offers established and emerging Asian donor powers a mechanism to define the international order on their own terms. An in-depth analysis of Japanese, Chinese, and Indian development fora in Africa, reveals how each Asian donor cultivates a unique development brand engineered for a highly interconnected 21st century development landscape. Through the application of disruptive development ontologies in African engagement, Japan, China, and India have defined new modes of cooperation built around their distinctive worldviews, values, and norms.

"Performing the Electrical or My Heart is an Electromagnetic Chamber Scenographies of Power, Ecology and Speculative Practice." Doctoral diss., 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.57306.

Abstract:
abstract: Performing the Electrical traces the histories and futures of electrical discovery and knowledge through cultural performances, socio-political assemblages, and the more-than-human worldmaking functions of energy in general and electricity in particular, or what I refer to as energy-as-electricity. This project seeks to transform how energy-as-electricity is perceived, and thereby to re-vision the impact that energy-rich relationships might have ecologically—in both the social and environmental senses of the word. As a practice-led inquiry I use my scenographic sensibilities in combination with performance studies and energy humanities lenses to identify how energy-scapes form through social performances, material relations, and aesthetic/ritualistic interventions. This approach allows me to synthesize vastly different scales of energy-as-electricity performatives and spatialities and propose alternative framings which work towards decolonizing and re-feminizing energy-rich relationships. This research considers the way power flows, accumulates, and transforms through performance as embodied expression, practice and eventful doings of human and more-than-human agents. It asks: if place is practiced space (Henri Lefebvre), how can decolonizing and re-feminizing energy-rich relationships transform normative power relationships (or power geometries, as cultural geographer Doreen Massey refers to such globalized interconnections)—which are formed through electricity, technologies and colonial-capitalism? I ground this inquiry as an ecological intervention in order to investigate how performing with electricity differently (both in collective imaginations and quotidian interactions), can change the ways that electricity is produced and consumed in the time of the Anthropocene, Capitalocene, and Plasticene. The following study produces written and tacit knowledge that expands the framing of energy-rich relationships shared between human and more-than-human performatives. My provocation is that experiential encounters are critical for expanding the ontological plurality of energy-as-electricity with ecological a/effect. Drawing on the insights of performance scenographer Rachel Hann, I demonstrate that scenographic methodologies in an expanded field, along with embodied sensing, provide productive insights into this endeavor of expansion. This project both serves as a space making/space keeping provocation and offers a methodology for devising more desirable futures.
