Abstract:

Söderberg, Emily, and Khadra Hussein. "Online Interpersonal Victimization : Gender Differences and Online Behaviors." Thesis, Mittuniversitetet, Avdelningen för samhällsvetenskap, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:miun:diva-28896.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate and describe online interpersonal victimization (OIPV) in terms of gender differences and the association between such victimization and online behavior of active social media users in a Swedish sample. Since social media has become such a big part of our world it is of importance to study OIPV in this forum. Previous research has found that OIPV is a rather common phenomenon, that there are gender differences included and that certain online behaviors are risk factors. OIPV by itself is not a crime but rather an umbrella term including the legal terms illegal threat, slander, insult, harassment, sexual harassment, stalking and crimes against the personal data act or the copyright act. The cyberlifestyle–routine activities theory was used in this study to understand which online behaviors were risk factors in our sample. To answer the aim a survey was made and answered by 338 participants. The answers were tested with chi-square tests (χ²) and Mann-Whitney U tests in order to examine differences in gender regarding victimization and to find differences between the victimized and non-victimized group regarding their online behaviors. The results showed a high prevalence of OIPV and that women were more likely to be victims of OIPV, especially of harassment, sexual harassment, threats of sexual violence and stalking. The online behaviors that were significant risk factors in our sample were the use of a profile picture of themselves and number of hours spent on social media every day. This combined indicated that social media may not be a completely gender equal place and that online behaviors may not indicate the risk of being victimized equally well for both genders.

Jansson, K. (Kaisu). "Online recruitment and Millennials:recruitment communication and online assessment." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2017. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201701121062.

Full text
Abstract:
Recruitment has shifted from traditional channels and practices to processes taking place online and recruitment research has subsequently started to investigate online recruitment processes. While there have been conflicting perceptions amongst recruitment researchers about whether the organizational or the applicant perspective has been neglected in recruitment research most of the present literature focuses on the first phase of the recruitment process, attracting applicants. This thesis takes the perspective of the applicant, and in this case the Millennial generation, and investigates the later phases of the recruitment process, recruitment communication and online assessment. The aim is to find out what kind of preferences Millennial applicants have towards recruitment communication’s timing, content and media and different online assessment methods such as online tests, digital interviews and gamification. This thesis is conducted as a qualitative research with a factist perspective. After extensive review of recruitment and Millennial research a theoretical framework is developed. Empirical data is gathered trough semi-structured thematic interviews and analyzed with content analysis. The research findings are then applied to the theoretical framework and the framework is adjusted to depict the preferences of the Millennial applicant towards recruitment communication and online assessment methods. The research findings suggest the Millennial applicant has several expectations towards both recruitment communication and different online assessment methods. Recruitment communication is expected to happen in a continuous manner to avoid uncertainty and show the hiring organization’s respect and valuation towards the applicant. Recruitment communication should also be efficient and convenient for the applicant, and email is found to be the preferred communication medium. The Millennial applicant also expects feedback on his or her performance as well as reasoning for selection decisions. Concerning different online assessment methods, the Millennial applicant prefers assessment methods that make them feel they have influence over recruitment outcomes. In addition, perceptions of validity and relevance as well as efficiency and convenience affect Millennials’ preferences concerning different online assessment methods. The research findings have several managerial implications. Designing recruitment processes in which millennial preferences are taken into consideration can produce better applicant experience and have a positive effect on the company image. Although measures have been taken to ensure research reliability, the number of research participants and the same field of study of the research participants limit the generalizability of the research results.

Moura, Rute Isabel Mondingas de. "Recrutamento Online." Master's thesis, Universidade Europeia - Laureate International Universities, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.26/7749.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract: This study was performed under the scope of the Human Resource Management Master Course at Universidade Europeia, with the aim of analyzing, studying and understanding the importance that finalist students from different scientific areas and different degrees give to the recruitment process through online social networks. The choice of this theme was based on the great development and growth of social networks on the Internet as well as the huge and amazing membership had, especially by younger people. At a time when the economic situation in Portugal is not favorable and that the unemployment rate hovers around 15 %, it is remarkable the anemic state where the country arrived. There are budget cuts, families with increasingly smaller and more serious incomes, families with absolutely none income, one or both members of the couple in unemployment, and in the worst case with the unemployment fund already exhausted without any income, due to new tax burdens and also due to the markets neoliberal submission politics mostly resultant of our inclusion in the Euro zone. It then becomes imperative to adopt measures to counter this trend, try to find jobs and overcome this “crisis”, as everyone calls. It is admitted that hardly the unemployment rate will reach 0 %, but each of us can begin to explore all the possibilities, looking for opportunities in various platforms, whether on paper or on the internet and in this ones, from specific sites of job seekers to social networks that are today an important reality and a huge window of opportunity if we know how to take advantage of it. While inside the social Network we can be linked to hundreds of people, which in turn bind to hundreds, which means that we are directly and indirectly connected to millions of people, and who knows that there is no million that could help us? Or looking for some particular role where I can be the most appropriate? This theme, because it is a recent concept has been little explored what makes this innovative research work. Proved to be a challenging research but also harder due to lack of available information on the subject, so it is interesting to see if this this is an unexplored theme or not by certain scientific areas. Thus, it is also important to realize the gains identified by people in the online recruitment platforms, currently a major means of communication between people and businesses. The structure of this research work had three phases: the first focuses on the literature review; the second refers to a quantitative method such as the questionnaires that were 10 carried out; the third and final phase is dedicated to the empirical study and results discussion, including the methodological approach followed by analysis and results discussion. Within the conclusion attention is drawn to the study limitations and suggestions are indicated for future works.

FLÜGGE, PRAPHAROT CELINA, MATILDA SVENSSON, and SARA JOHANSSON. "Sportkonsumtion online." Thesis, Högskolan i Borås, Institutionen Textilhögskolan, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hb:diva-18057.

Full text
Abstract:

Meredith, Joanne. "Chatting online : comparing spoken and online written interaction between friends." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2014. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/14321.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the question of whether or not online interactional practices are systematically different from interaction in other contexts, particularly spoken interaction. I will establish how the organization of online interaction demonstrates participants orientations to the technological affordances of the online medium. The dataset for the study comprises one-to-one interaction between friends, conducted using the chat application of the social networking site, Facebook. Chat logs and screen capture data were used to analyze how participants engaged in, and managed, their unfolding interaction. The data were analyzed using conversation analysis (CA). CA was developed originally for the analysis of spoken talk, but in this dissertation it provides an empirical basis for comparing Facebook chat and spoken interaction. The thesis demonstrates how CA can be used for analyzing online interaction. The first analytic chapter provides an overview of how participants organize the generic orders of interaction. The findings suggest that participants draw on their knowledge of both spoken and written interaction when managing the particular interactional constraints and affordances of Facebook chat. The second analytic chapter focuses on chat openings, comparing them to openings in spoken interaction. The findings reveal some similarities, but also systematic differences which orient to the design of the chat software. The third analytic chapter examines topic management, including topic-initiation, topic change and the management of simultaneous topics. The findings suggest that the CA categorization of topic-initiating turns could potentially be extended by also analyzing action-orientation and also the epistemic stance displayed. The analysis also reveals remarkable similarities between topic change in spoken interaction and in Facebook chat. Finally in this chapter I show how organizational components of spoken interaction, such as adjacency pairs and tying techniques, are used to manage simultaneous topics. The final analytic chapter focuses on self-repair in Facebook chat. The analysis reveals that self-repairs completed during message construction orient to the same interactional contingencies as self-repairs in spoken interaction. However, the affordances of Facebook chat enable these repairs to be hidden from the recipient. Visible repairs tend to be corrections, with the affordances impacting the sequential placement of such repairs. Finally, I show how participants self-repair in response to the actions of their co-participant. Overall, the findings reveal a number of similarities between the organization of Facebook chat and spoken interaction. The analysis also reveals that participants attend to the technological affordances of Facebook in a variety of ways. Finally, this thesis demonstrates that, while there are differences between the interactional practices of spoken and online written interaction, CA can be used to analyze, and subsequently explain, such differences.

Abstract:
The thesis investigates online teaching and learning and in particular, the role of the 'e-moderator' as pedagogical leader in relation to e-learner capabilities. The research builds upon a number of existing models including that of Bass and Alvolio (1996), their 'transactional/task-giving' and 'transformational/motivational' behaviours, and applies these to e-moderator work. Secondly, a review of the research literature provides further concepts applicable to e-learner online behaviour - collaborative capability and knowledge construction ability. These are utilised to create a new model, the 'model of Pedagogical Variation', where online teaching is viewed as situational, and e-learners of varying degrees of capability can be given opportunities to maximise their online learning. A hypothetico-deductive methodology, following the work of Karl Popper (2002), is adopted as the theoretical framework. The research sought to corroborate the proposed pedagogical model, which was successfully achieved with experienced e-moderator practitioners adapting Kelly's (1955) personal construct psychology using the six elements: socialising, scaffolding, knowledge construction, weaving, summarising and archiving. In accordance with the hypothetico-deductive approach, an evaluation was then conducted with the objective of refuting the basic underlying assumptions of the Pedagogical Variation model. The model did withstand attempts at falsification, but is presented here as provisional, open to further scrutiny, testing and comparison. Future research could be in the development of diagnostic tools for e-moderator evaluation of e-learner capabilities and on e-learner preferences regarding the selection of a particular online learning environment. It is suggested that effective online teaching is dependent not only on e-learner context but also on e-moderators' pedagogical leadership. The model for Pedagogical Variation is an attempt to show how adaptations in design and delivery can be made in asynchronous learning networks in order to motivate and facilitate successful outcomes for e-learners, whether they are digital natives or digital immigrants (Prensky,2001 ). Online course providers and developers may also use the Pedagogical Variation model as a blueprint for exploring creative ways of implementing new emerging learning technologies fit for the 21st Century.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores how faculty development for online teaching in higher education might facilitate transformative learning and the transfer of instructional practices across teaching modalities. The first manuscript examines how the essential constructs of transformative learning are promoted in online faculty development and which elements of faculty development help to foster transformative learning. The second manuscript describes a case study that emerged from a university faculty development seminar to prepare instructors to teach online. The purpose of this study was to examine how, if at all, the Online Faculty Development Seminar changed five participants’ perspectives of teaching. This study found written reflection activities, combined with dialogue with colleagues, and having experienced instructors come in to tour their courses and discuss lessons learned contributed to perspective transformation. The third manuscript examines whether instructional practices introduced in the seminar would transfer to instructors’ in-person teaching and how faculty development and the experience of teaching online may have facilitated that transfer. The study found participants experienced perspective transformations that affected how they perceived their role as instructors, and they transferred some online course design and instructional practices to their in-person teaching. These practices included incorporating more digital tools to in-person courses, communicating clearly and transparently, designing courses with intentionality, and paying forward the lessons they learned to assist colleagues transitioning to teaching remotely in Spring 2020. Findings suggest that a structured course design process, self-reflection activities, opportunities to dialogue with colleagues, and course tours from colleagues aided in transfer of practices across modalities.

Abstract:
Due to strong growth in the virtual business environment, online internationalization has become a topic of high interest. This makes it necessary for firms providing software online to carefully investigate and understand barriers and differences in countries before entering them. Further, companies expanding abroad face a variety of differences compared to their home market, which has to be carefully understood in order to succeed internationally and to avoid misinterpretations. This thesis took a qualitative approach and was based on six semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions, all performed with CEOs, founders or managers with explicit knowledge in the online internationalization phase of their firms. The insights from the interviews acknowledge which differences and barriers the firms faced and how they perceived them. The outline and result of the study were based on the four dimensions of cultural, administrative, geographic and economic challenges. The result showed that the cultural and geographic dimensions were barely perceived as barriers by the firms, the administrative dimensions moderately, whereas the companies clearly perceived the economic dimensions as barriers in their internationalization processes. Additional findings of the study were the importance of cultural leadership, hierarchies & decision-making processes, high-density clusters and pricing strategies.

Abstract:

The internet advertising market is growing much faster than any other advertising vertical. The technology for serving advertising online goes more and more towards automated processes that analyze the page content and the user’s preferences and then matches the ads with these parameters.

The task at hand was to research and find methods that could be suitable for matching web documents to ads automatically, build a prototype system, make an evaluation and suggest areas for further development. The goals of the system was high throughput, accurate ad matching and fast response times. A requirement on the system was that human input could only be done when adding ads into the system for the system to be scalable.

The prototype system is based on the vector space model and a td-idf weighting scheme. The cosines coefficient was used in the system to quantify the similarity between a web document and an ad.

A technique called stemming was also implemented in the system together with a clustering solution that aided the ad matching in cases where few matches could be done on the keywords attached to the ads. The system was built with a threaded structure to improve throughput and scalability.

The tests results show that you accurately can match ads to a website’s content using the vector space model and the cosines-coefficient. The tests also show that the stemming has a positive effect on the ad matching accuracy.

Abstract:
This project is aimed at downloading and uploading online assignments for students; with each assignment having information about the instructions, description, deadline, and submission details. The main goal of this thesis is to design and implement online assignment submission and provide an interface use for uploading test program (Nant script file) by instructors, who would be able to evaluate assignments automatically. The system provides an interface for testing assignments such that they can be plugged in by the teachers.  This testing could invoke a compiler and make a test-run of the compiled code and check the result or test for plagiarism, existence of certain documents or simply check the file type (extension). The most obvious advantage offered by online assignment submission is that it offers faster transmission of assignments than using traditional way by using online system. The interface use to invoke different testing program by teachers, So Save the time and cost for teachers by enabling them to put up a fast response for students as well as increasing the quality of the feedback provided to students.       Keywords: UML (Unified Modeling Language), Nant (Not Ant), OSS (online assignment Submission), Script file, DotNet2005.

Abstract:
The report can be devided into two main parts; the theoretical construction of AI to be used in the game “Achtung Online”, and the implementation of a demo version of the described theoretical AI. The main goal is to create an AI that is entertaining and challenging for a human player. This have led to a concretized list of quality goals for the two main report parts. The report background presents the history of the game concept “Achtung die kurve” and also the evolution of game AI theory. The main study consists of a litterature study and a comprehensive determination of concrete goals of the game bots behavior. Some interesting AI techniques to the game will also be discussed in detail. Building upon the study, a specification of the final game AI is constructed. The demo version of the AI will implement some of the concepts of the theoretical AI specification. The report will then discuss about the implementation and then finally present the results followed by a discussion.

Abstract:
Where the role of software-intensive systems has shifted from the traditional one of fulfilling isolated computational tasks, larger collaborative societies with interaction as primary resource, is gradually taking its place. This can be observed in anything from logistics to rescue operations and resource management, numerous services with key-roles in the modern infrastructure. In the light of this new collaborative order, it is imperative that the tools (compilers, debuggers, profilers) and methods (requirements, design, implementation, testing) that supported traditional software engineering values also adjust and extend towards those nurtured by the online instrumentation of software intensive systems. That is, to adjust and to help to avoid situations where limitations in technology and methodology would prevent us from ascertaining the well-being and security of systems that assists our very lives. Coupled with most perspectives on software development and maintenance is one well established member of, and complement to, the development process. Debugging; or the art of discovering, localising, and correcting undesirable behaviours in software-intensive systems, the need for which tend to far outlive development in itself. Debugging is currently performed based on a premise of the developer operating from a god-like perspective. A perspective that implies access and knowledge regarding source code, along with minute control over execution properties. However, the quality as well as accessibility of such information steadily decline with time as requirements, implementation, hardware components and their associated developers, all alike fall behind their continuously evolving surroundings. In this thesis, it is argued that the current practice of software debugging is insufficient, and as precursory action, introduce a technical platform suitable for experimenting with future methods regarding online debugging, maintenance and analysis. An initial implementation of this platform will then be used for experimenting with a simple method that is targeting online observation of software behaviour.
