Littleton, Heather, Amie E. Grills, Katherine D. Kline, Alexander M. Schoemann, and Julia Dodd. "The From Survivor to Thriver Program: RCT of an Online Therapist-Facilitated Program for Rape-Related PTSD." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2016. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/7326.

Full text
Abstract:
This study evaluated the efficacy of the From Survivor to Thriver program, an interactive, online therapist-facilitated cognitive-behavioral program for rape-related PTSD. Eighty-seven college women with rape-related PTSD were randomized to complete the interactive program (n = 46) or a psycho-educational self-help website (n = 41). Both programs led to large reductions in interview-assessed PTSD at post-treatment (interactive d = 2.22, psycho-educational d = 1.10), which were maintained at three month follow-up. Both also led to medium- to large-sized reductions in self-reported depressive and general anxiety symptoms. Follow-up analyses supported that the therapist-facilitated interactive program led to superior outcomes among those with higher pre-treatment PTSD whereas the psycho-educational self-help website led to superior outcomes for individuals with lower pre-treatment PTSD. Future research should examine the efficacy and effectiveness of online interventions for rape-related PTSD including whether treatment intensity matching could be utilized to maximize outcomes and therapist resource efficiency.

Bagnall, Kara Marie. "Long-term follow-up of NetmumsHWD : a feasibility randomised controlled trial of telephone supported online behavioural activation for postnatal depression at 16 months post-randomisation." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/15289.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose: Postnatal depression has significant negative outcomes for both mother and baby. Cognitive-behavioural interventions have proven promising in its treatment, but there are a number of barriers, specific to the postnatal period, which lead to low take-up of treatment. Online interventions may circumvent some of these barriers. However, evidence of long-term follow-up is sparse, in spite of the importance of knowing how such treatments work over the longer-term. Methods: Long-term follow-up of postnatal women participating in a feasibility randomised controlled trial of NetmumsHWD, an online behavioural activation treatment with telephone support. Results: Retention rates of over 70 percent were obtained. There were small but non-significant effects of treatment on depressive symptomology and behavioural activation scores at 16 months post-randomisation. Baseline depression and behavioural activation scores predicted attrition prior to the implementation of outreach strategies for data collection; these systematic differences in attrition disappeared post-implementation. Measures of treatment adherence were not related to outcome. Conclusions: Collection of long-term follow-up data from postnatal women appears feasible. The findings demonstrate the importance of outreach in maximising retention, especially in relation to the generalizability of results. Future research should consider ways to assess treatment engagement and its relationship with outcome.

"Effects of Internet Training in Mindfulness Meditation on Variables Related to Cancer Recovery." Doctoral diss., 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.43939.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Cancer survivors engaged in either six-week Internet-delivered mindfulness training or a usual-care control and were compared on the following outcome battery: The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Profile of Mood States, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Fatigue Symptom Inventory. Assessments were conducted before and after treatment and intervention compliance was monitored. Mindfulness treatments were delivered at a time and on a computer of the participants’ choosing. Multivariate analysis indicated that mindfulness training produced significant benefits on all measures (p < .05). Online mindfulness instruction represents a widely-accessible, cost-effective intervention for reducing psychological distress and its behavioral manifestations in cancer survivors, especially those who are unable to participate in in-person training.

Yates, Steven. "RAT online : design, delivery and evaluation of constructivist computer supported martial arts learning environments." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/7565.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes the evaluation of several computer supported martial arts learning environments. These learning environments were designed, developed and implemented for practitioners of Rough and Tumble (RAT), a South African martial art, originally as a result of an increasing number of RAT practitioners relocating to other countries and yet wishing to continue their learning and practise of RAT. This project revolves mainly around the effectiveness evaluation of whether RAT martial arts knowledge, skills and attitudes can be learned in computer supported learning environments. The research is situated within design research and has pragmatic goals to provide a computer supported learning environment for the learning of RAT. Furthermore the design research was conducted to derive design principles for future design and development efforts. A brief account of the literature is provided, covering three main learning paradigms, with a focus on behaviourism and constructivism, followed by a description of issues in the computer supported learning field, an explanation of various definitions of martial arts and how the term is delimited in this study, and an overview of various evaluation paradigms. This account revealed inadequacies of the theories and terminology described pertaining to this study, resulting in the combined use of various underlying theoretical approaches to guide this research. These approaches include the eclectic-mixed methods-pragmatic paradigm as the overarching framework, a social constructivist learning approach, cognitive flexibility theory, Bloom’s Taxonomy, the RAT approach to martial arts learning and teaching, and a mixed methods research design. Two main components were developed as solutions, which included the development of a computer martial arts resource, the RAT CD-ROM, and four online courses, the RAT Online courses. Data were collected using a number of research instruments, such as questionnaires, interviews, observations, records, expert reviews and learner artefacts in an attempt to understand the data from multiple viewpoints and develop a more reliable depiction of evaluation events. The data were analysed using mainly qualitative coding in software, expert rating diagrams, basic frequency statistics, and martial arts assessments of physical performances. These analyses revealed that although there is significant work involved in mixed methods research and there are issues such as participants not meeting task deadlines, technology failures, software usability issues, and small participant numbers, the research approach has contributed to the pragmatic goal of providing computer supported learning environments to RAT practitioners, who otherwise would not have been able to participate in RAT. In addition a number of design principles for the creation of RAT computer supported learning environments were derived from this research, including the use of social constructivism, cognitive flexibility theory, Bloom’s Taxonomy, multiple contextual training, and using computers as learning and knowledge construction tools. These underlying theoretical principles translate to more practical procedural principles, such as amongst others, to design computer supported learning environments incorporating tools to enable knowledge construction and collaboration, provide learning designs that are complex and authentic, encourage multiple representations of learner knowledge, take on a mentor role as online course facilitator, and to build problem solving activities into the learning design.

Quantum dots (QDs) has been wildly used for biomedical applications and show exceptional competence to be the same as the organic dyes due to their superior optical properties and conjugation diversity. However, as being applied into living animals, the concern of the notoriously unusual and cadmium-containing nanostructures made QDs to be the two sides of the same coin and elicit many paradoxical viewpoints. For the safety considerations in vivo, analytical methods were developed for the direct investigation of the QD biodistribution that became a flourishing issue to be invested urgently. Based on the reports regarding the biodistribution data of QDs, in general, the total concentrations of QDs in blood and homogenized organs or tissues were used. Neither the detailed QD distribution among the compartments of blood stream, extracellular space, and that be fixed by cells nor the integrity following the cadmium release was performed because it was still lack of the suitable analytical strategies to deeply explore the QD extravasation and the behavior of cadmium release in living animals. To overcome the abovementioned limitations, the PTFE tubing-based sample pretreatment schemes were hyphenated to push-pull perfusion sampling and ICP-MS for not only the analysis of QDs in liver extracellular space but also the QD integrity based on its cadmium release behavior. According to the results acquired, the functional groups on QD surface had an obvious influence on their blood pharmacokinetics, extracellular profiles, and liver accumulation. Besides, within the 5-h monitoring, it was indicated that pegylated QDs can still sustain its integrity with the negligible release of the constituent elements. Based on the superiority and uniqueness of our developed methods, it is expected that a strong network of nano-related analytical chemist, pharmacologist and toxicologist can be established for the purpose of exploring and mapping the secret of QDs in vivo.
