Abstract:
This thesis reports on a study undertaken at the Dixson Library, University of New England. The purpose of the study was to develop an understanding of users of online public access catalogues (OPACs). The understanding gained from the study will assist in the development of improvements to the Library's OPAC, and increase user ability to access information from the OPAC. The study replicated the user questionnaire of the Online Patron Access Project, sponsored by the Council on Library Resources (CLR) in 1981/83. The questionnaire was modified slightly to suit conditions at the Dixson Library. The study addressed nine research questions relating to the users, their reactions, attitudes, experiences and problems. The user task and their suggestions for improvement were also addressed. The study formally tested three propositions between the variables user task, success and attitudes in relation to OPAC users. The findings show the analysis of the responses for the population as a whole, and, where relevant, for eight groups of student respondents based on their academic affiliation. The student population was of particular importance because of the preponderance of external students at the University of New England. The differences in the findings between the groups of students were discussed, and where possible, explained. The three formal propositions were tested by carrying out Chi square tests for the values of each variable. Nine significant relationships were found. Comparisons were made between the Dixson Library findings and those of the CLR study. Recommendations and conclusions were drawn from the study, including areas for further research.

Hancock-Beaulieu, Micheline. "Subject searching behaviour at the library catalogue and at the shelves : evaluating the impact of an online public access catalogue." Thesis, City University London, 1989. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/7946/.

Abstract:
Searching behaviour in a university library is studied using a holistic approach encompassing the use of bibliographic tools and browsing at the shelves. The project was designed as a 'before and after' study to evaluate the impact of an online catalogue on subject searching behaviour. A combined methodology was devised using a talk-aloud technique, observation, and screen logging facility to elicit both verbal and non-verbal data from users in their searching activity at the manual bibliographic tools, including a microfiche catalogue and printed PRECIS index and at the online catalogue, as well as at the shelves. The data was recorded on a highly structured dual questionnaire and observation form with some real time expert interpretation. The limitations of the methodological approach of previous catalogue use studies are highlighted suggesting that subject searching as a basic primary need had been previously underestimated. The online catalogue does not seem to have increased the extent of subject searching nor the use of the bibliographic tool. An extensive qualitative analysis correlating expressed topics, search formulation strategies and documents retrieved at the shelves reveals the adaptive nature of the subject searching process, whereby the user adapts to the structure of the tools available. The PRECIS index supports a contextual approach for broad search formulations and more interactive reformulations whereas the OPAC encouraged a matching approach and narrow formulations with fewer but user generated reformulations. The success rate of the online catalogue was slightly better than that for the PRECIS index but fewer items were retrieved at the shelves. Nonusers of the bibliographic tools seemed to be just as successful. The information retrieval task in both searching environments is tailored by the system to a single one dimensional sequential process. It is suggested that a major obstacle to subject searching effectiveness may lie in the lack of interaction between the different subject access elements: the indexing language, the classification and the titles. The study concludes that to improve retrieval effectiveness online catalogues should cater for both matching and contextual approaches to searching. Recent research indicates that a more interactive process could be promoted by providing query expansion through a combination of searching aids for matching, for search formulation assistance and for structured contextual retrieval.

Abstract:
The purpose of this Masters thesis is to study how three public libraries in the west of Sweden have arranged their fiction for adults on shelves and what the possibilities for fiction retrieval are in their Online Public Access Catalogues OPAC. The theoretical framework includes a practical part consisting of Jarmo Saartis ideas about shelf arrangement and a theoretical part consisting of Annelise Mark Pejtersens different dimensions. The methods used in the case study are three interviews with librarians, visits in the libraries and searching in the libraries OPACs. Furthermore, we have summarized relevant literature about this subject in a summary of research. The analysis shows that our three libraries have arranged their fiction in a traditional way according to Saartis ideas about shelf arrangement. The libraries have arranged their fiction in alphabetical order and also arranged their most popular genres on separate shelves. Furthermore, the analysis shows that Pejtersens dimensions are not totally represented in the twelve books which we retrieved from the three libraries OPACs. The result of our Masters thesis is that our three libraries have made changes in their shelf arrangement to make it easier for their users to retrieve genre fiction. The changes in shelf arrangement are made by the library staff and no other project has influenced these changes and there is no expressed connection between the research of fiction and the practical treatment of fiction in the libraries. Another result is that the possibility to retrieve fiction in OPACs depends on the number of subject headings and we think it could be confusing for the users when there is no standardization among the OPACs.

Abstract:

Offering of electronic public services has become one of the principal parts of strategy of many governments all over the world. One of the 20 public services envisaged in program documents of the European Union is a service designated for citizens “Public libraries (availability of catalogues, search tools)”, that has to ensure open access to regional and global information resources. However taking into account the tasks that emerge when academic libraries start to create knowledge society it is very important to evaluate the spectrum of electronic public services provided exactly by academic libraries, possibilities of their quality and effectiveness improvement, and perspectives of their development.

Abstract:
The Master thesis focuses on the application of Information Systems in the field of Library and Information Science.  Within the context of organizational learning, a collaborative user-centered approach is used to produce desired system characteristics and future research suggestions. More specifically, this research study explores the library users’ and academic librarians’ perceptions of the current library discovery and access services as mediated through the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) of the Academic Library of the School of Philosophy at Athens University in Greece. Additionally, it explores their desired characteristics for the ‘public facing’ Integrated Library System (ILS), of which the OPAC constitutes a module, in order to generate recommendations that guide the Academic Library staff members’ collaborative design of a more user-centered library information system. The study is built upon the systems thinking framework of Checkland’s Soft Systems Methodology (SSM). Applied theories and design processes guide research processes aimed at advancing both inclusive social learning and system improvements.

Abstract:
Existing electronic markets are fragmented in the sense that each is an information island. The interoperation of product information between them is difficult especially in semantics communication. This prevents the formation of global electronic markets and the lowering distribution cost through market globalisation. The traditional and contemporary ap-proaches of product standardisation and ontology mediation could solve the problem only if all markets could adopt the same product standards, or mediation systems could mediate all heterogeneous standards and markets without semantic conflicts. However, problems generally exist in adopting a universal standard or mediating all markets through existing mediation systems. A reflection of the issue is that there are millions of ad hoc electronic product catalogues (EPCs) situated in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), where each EPC is a semantic community, often not aware of standards and mediation systems due to its ad hoc nature. This thesis focuses on the semantic integration of autonomous ad hoc EPCs, which are semantically inconsistent with each other. Firstly, a novel Collaborative Concept Exchange (CONEX) approach is developed for the se-mantic integration of ad hoc EPCs. Using this approach, a PRODUCT MAP is first built based on the theories of semiotic analysis and market segmentation. It functions as an analytical framework to articulate ad hoc EPCs, and answers the questions: what are the general char-acteristics of ad hoc EPCs, what are their heterogeneous relations, and how they are unevenly distributed in fragmented electronic markets. Within this framework, an abstract representa-tion of ad hoc EPCs is proposed using the articulated elements that are simple and manipu-lable. Major contributions of this framework include: the models of the abstract representa-tion of ad hoc EPCs on their structures, concepts and contexts; the semantic integration conditions of heterogeneous ad hoc EPCs; and a ConexNet of market network topology that captures the characteristics of ad hoc EPCs that are unevenly distributed in fragmented elec-tronic markets. Secondly, a three-layer CONEX information model is proposed to integrate ad hoc EPCs based on the PRODUCT MAP, which provides a trichotomy of systems, designers and users. The strategy behind the model is the separation of structure from concept and context, and hence they can be independently managed to resolve semantic conflicts between ad hoc EPCs. The major contributions of this model include the CONEX framework, collaboration mechanism and context transformation. The CONEX framework presents a formal characteri-sation and reconstruction of the structures of ad hoc EPCs based on a CONEX structure model and a CONEX grammar. It provides a formal specification for representing ad hoc EPCs including concept structure, classifier structure and mapping structure. The semantic conflicts in designing the concepts of ad hoc EPCs are resolved by a collaboration mecha-nism based on a semantic consistency model. The collaboration mechanism includes three key procedures: replicating unique concept identifiers and translating concept definitions be-tween common concepts of common EPCs; localising common concepts to local EPCs; and globalising local concepts to common EPCs. Users in the CONEX information model are not involved in any integration activities. They are provided with automatic and accurate concept exchange services through a mechanism of context transformation, which is designed based on an algorithm called Heterogeneous Concept Transformation. The separate integration of structures, concepts and contexts of ad hoc EPCs guarantees that the requirements of flexi-bility, evolvability and exactness of semantic integration have been met. Thirdly, the feasibility and features of the Collaborative Concept Exchange approach have been demonstrated in a prototype implementation that provides the services of collaborative concept design for semantic conflict resolution, and heterogeneous concept transformation for accurate and automatic concept exchange between ad hoc EPCs. A key contribution in the implementation level is the independent representation of the CONEX framework called XML PRODUCT MAP (XPM). XPM provides a feature of platform independence by con-forming to the standards of W3C XML, Simple Object Access Protocol and Web Services Description Language in both document specification and document transport. It is also a demonstration that the generic CONEX structure model and CONEX grammar can be imple-mented in any specific language such as XML for the particular scenarios of semantic integra-tion. With the aid of a collection of XPM document templates, two components called Con-cept Collaborator and Concept Transformer of the CONEX prototype are implemented to demonstrate how concepts are collaboratively designed to resolve semantic conflicts and how concepts are automatically and accurately exchanged between autonomous, heterogeneous and distributed ad hoc EPCs.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references.
This thesis is an investigation into the digital divide in South Africa. Its main aim is to present for the first time an analysis of South African Internet access and Internet users, in the context of existing digital divide theory. Four possible models of digital divides will be tested by assessing Internet access, Internet users and Internet user behaviour. The first part of this thesis sheds light on how changes over time in the number of people Internet access in South Africa can be understood. In an effort to evaluate four possible models from literature on digital divides, statistics on Internet access in South Africa are scrutinised in ways that have not yet been done in academic literature. Information on how Internet access may be increasing or decreasing within the population will also be assessed. This is so as to demonstrate how Internet access in South Africa may be experiencing a far more complex set of changes than access statistics alone may suggest. The second part of this thesis will investigate the Internet users who participate in debate and discussion on MyNews24, a South African "citizen journalism" portal on News24. The four possible models of the digital divide will be further evaluated based on the results of these findings. It is here where MyNews24 will also be evaluated as a possible online public sphere, which will demonstrate how inclusion of exclusion from public spaces such as MyNews24 may be of previously unrecognised consequence. The third and final part of this thesis will investigate how the digital divide is manifesting in the online commentary on MyNews24, and will demonstrate what kinds of interactions and conversations are talking place in this space. This will also demonstrate ways in which the digital divide may be affecting the nature of online debate in these possible online public spheres.

Abstract:
The present study was undertaken to investigate the concerns of secondary school teacher-librarians, that the subject headings set down by the Australian Schools Catalogue Information Service (ASCIS) do not cover topics in senior sourses of study. NSW HSC Economics was chosen to test this perception. Terms were extracted from three textual sources (syllabus, textbook and examination papers) and checked against the subject headings in the ASCIS Subject Headings List. A comparison was made between terms which matched exactly, those which were only partially matched and those which had no match. The linguistic complexity of the term (single-word or multi-word) and the number of textual sources using the term were also taken into account. The results showed a varying degree of match between textual terms and subject headings. Single-word terms found in more than one textual source were much more likely to be found in the subject headings than those from only one textual source. Multi-word terms were found less frequently than single-word terms, but were also more likely to be found when they came from more than one textual source. There was a large number of partial matches in this group, and these were found to be more general in concept than the textual terms. Most of the terms were found, but the general nature of the partial matches and the lack of adequate cross references may cause problems in subject analysis and retrieval.

Abstract:
There is a great need for digital libraries that are flexible, scalable, and reliable. Few such systems exist. Little is known about how to build them. This thesis addresses these problems by enhancing a prototype digital library system with the aim of making it more flexible, scalable, and reliable. We hypothesize that: 1) adding a new (user information) layer and maintaining weak coupling in the design of a digital library system can help achieve system flexibility; 2) optimizing network connection usage and facilitating distribution of computation and disk operations in system design can help achieve system scalability; and 3) applying good software processes can help university students produce a very reliable system. Approaches based on the above hypothesis were used in the project of Reengineering the MARIAN System in Java. The results of the project and experiments verified the correctness of the hypothesis. The results of this thesis may help inform future digital library design and implementation projects to produce flexible, scalable, and reliable systems.

On the base of bibliometric analysis, this study explores the characteristics of the OPAC literature, such as the literature growth, document type, language, author productivity and the distribution of journal articles. A total of 6309 bibliographic records were retrieved from the LISA Plus and Library Lit&Info Science databases. The results of these study reveal that: 1.The OPAC literature, 1975-2002, shows an example of logistic growth. 2.Journal was the major way of publication. Journal, book and conference paper account for 99% of total publication, indicating that OPAC study extremely emphasizes timeliness and originality. 3.English was the most frequently used language. German, French and Dutch were secondary languages. 4.By analyzing the categories in all articles, online catalog technical services, information work, information storage and retrieval, etc. were the most frequently research topics. 5.The vast majority of authors that published one paper, constitutes 77.6% of total authors. 6.Lotka's law was found to be inapplicable to author productivity distribution with n=-2.5073 and C=75.12%. The KS test was also utilized to test the invalidity of observed distributions at 0.01 level of significance. 7.The Bradford's law of scattering and Bradford-Zipf’s Law were applied and 8 and 18 core journals were identified by these two methods, respectively. The most important countries of core journal publishers were in USA. 8.The results of the present study also revealed that journal productivity were consistent with Bradford’s Law. 9.The vast majority of author is Drabenstott, Karen Markey. The results of the proposed study may help librarians to do collection development and management scientifically and objectively and to improve the information services effectively.

The main purpose of this research is through questionnaire survey of Internet to find out users’ using experience and opinions of Web-based Public Access Catalog among public libraries, include the access points and system’s function in order to know users’conditions and needs. Hopefully, the analyze result of the study is helpful to understand the satisfaction, ability, evaluation, and suggestion among users. The samples of this research are collected 616 person-time from 17 public libraries including five kinds of library automatic system, they are SPYDUS, TOTALS, ARTIS, San-bian, and DYNIX. The results of the research show that users of Internet’s age is lower and lower; most of users using libraries during 9:00 a.m. to 15:00 p.m. at home or in school; users think that “title”, ”author”, and “subject” are the most important access point and used to search library’s collection. Additional, the result of the research also show that users are satisfied with 13 system functions of WebPAC, especially they are very easy to operate, and the system’s feedback speed is the most shortcoming. Among the five systems, ARTIS and San-bian earn users’good evaluation and TOTALS is to be considered no good for use. Generalizing the result of the research, there are several advantage of WebPAC: (1)Facilitating;(2)Quick to search data;(3)WWW has friendly interface;(4)Personalize service. And the disadvantage of WebPAC are: (1) Feedback speed is too low;(2)Not easy to find data exactly;(3)Interface is not very friendly;(4)Bibliography not very rich;(5)Data on the HomePage is not true. Catalog is an essential component of library services for patrons to find and identify the information what he or she needs. Though catalog usability is improved by information technologies, sometimes we are still encounter difficulties to access online public access catalogs (OPAC) while they are down or offline. As an index of library holdings, the availability of OPAC is an important factor of the library service quality. This study is to design a facility to achieve high availability of OPAC and to implement a functional system. In our literature review, we find that redundancy is a common practice in high availability solutions. Concerning about the cost of the system deployment, we choose OAI-PMH as a reference model to build up a "cooperate redundancy" networking. However, OAI-PMH is not suitable for processing real holdings in some aspects, thus we are by using "revision controlling", "compacted bibliography and holding metadata" and "data compressing" ways to downsize the bandwidth consuming while transferring real holdings metadata. Finally we are introducing our system design and its possible deploy networking topologies.

Library catalogs serve as a role to guide readers the position of collections. With the advance of science and technology, library catalogs evolve from card catalogs into online public access catalogs (OPACs). In order to give readers additional information, Libraries has used various APIs for integrating information from the Internet into OPACs . However, inconsistent APIs may increase the difficulties of maintaining OPACs. Various resources have been quickly developed on the Internet since Tim Berners-Lee invented World Wide Web in 1990s. With the developed Internet technology, Semantic Web also matures gradually. Therefore, with linked data and simplifing the procedures of using web information, this study integrates various data on the Internet into OPACs. Besides, this study transforms bibliographic records into the sets of linked data, and provides users to browse and download. Finally, this study uses System Usability Scale (SUS) and interviews to evaluate the usability of the proposed linked-data-enabled OPAC system to understand users’ acceptance of this system. This study aims to establish an OPAC system that provides information additional to traditional bibliographic records with the technology of linked data. The proposed system was developed by following the life cycle of linked data. The SUS evaluation showed that the system's usability is acceptable for users. The results of interviews demonstrated that it had positive and negative opinions from our participants. They gave positive feedbacks of the system, including: 1) automatically suggestions of search terms; 2) providing book covers’ images; 3) displaying authors’ graphs; 4) providing adapted information of the movies and brief introduction of series. However, some of the participants indicated two negative opinions to improve our system: 1) basic bibliographic columns is lesser; 2) lacking for QR code function.

With rapid progress in computer and network technology, more and more documents are published, indexed and stored in digital formats. Therefore the requirement for transferring information using computer network increases substantially. In order to improve the readability of the transferred data, people in information industry begin to use XML for interpretating data and redefining the formats for Electronic Data Interchange. However, because almost all library automation systems use a relational database to store data, data conversions should be performed before transferring XML data and after receiving XML data. Moreover, both the early used MAChine Readable Cataloguing and the newly adopted XML formats have highly hierarchical structures which are not suitable for Relational Data Model, resulting in various problems related to system analysis, data association, programming and system maintenance. This research developed an Online Public Access Catalog prototype system based on object oriented and XML database technologies. We then compared this system with a previously developed system which has the same functionalities but with a relational database. The comparison focused on developing frameworks, data models, conversions of book catalogues and system maintenance. We found that due to the hierarchical structure of book catalogues which matches the data model of a XML database, the system with XML database turned out better than that with a relational database. Our work of implementing the prototype system with a XML database is a good reference for developing digital libraries in the future.

The behavior of users’ information search has changed in the past years in accordance with the development of information technology. Therefore, Open Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) is facing great transformation and challenges. Libraries should design and construct an OPAC system from users’ perspective. In 2005, a report from International Federation of Library Association and Institution (IFLA) titled “Guidelines for Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) Displays” outlined principles in designing OPAC and highlighted the importance of users’ need. This study aims to offer a draft of design guidelines of OPAC for universities and colleges in Taiwan. It refers to IFLA guidance, local and abroad interfaces of OPACs, and blends in the feedback from scholars and educational institutions on the OPAC design. It also held three focus groups in order to gauge users’ views on how to improve the drafted guidelines. Then the revised guidelines were used to conduct further questionnaires on librarians and students. From there, it gave birth to the final guidelines. The analysis of the study came up six major categories and 35 principles. The six categories are: users’ need, design interface, content and information arrangement, retrieval technique, personalized service and information integration. This study could serve as the future guidance when librarians are in talks with vendors in their OPAC design, and when the evaluation of OPAC system is needed. This study also revealed that there is a gap between the opinion of users and librarians. Libraries should thus pay more attention in understanding what users want when constructing OPAC.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation proposes a model supporting the creation of trustable privacies in public online spaces, with the model demonstrating the potential for supporting trustable data handling in the qualitative domain. Privacy and trust, from the pivotal perspective of the individual were identified as crucial intangibles in the qualitative research and personal trust domains. That both privacy and trust depend heavily upon credible mechanisms for privacy became clear during the literature review and interview processes. Privacy, in its many forms, is a concept requiring greatly varying degrees of anonymity, confidentiality and control (Rotenberg, 2001; Lessig, 1998) and this was position was validated by literature and by qualitative comments by academic interviewees. Facilitation of secondary users including academics, public and private organisations, communities, casual information browsers is a goal of this research. This goal of facilitation is supported by the model proposed, and is discussed in Chapter 6, where future work is discussed. The core requirement to address confidentiality, ethics, privacy, ownership and control of data (Corti, 2000) is satisfied by the model as proposed and discussed. Expected outcomes of this research project are summarised as: • Proposed model for the creation of trustable privacies in public spaces. [Primary outcome] • Promotion of collaboration amongst domains and disciplines through improved universal access to archived data [Secondary outcome] • Identification of application domains outside of the initially identified domain set [Secondary outcome]. Self-Contained ReposItory ProcesSIng Template (SCRIPSIT) describes a model supporting a decentralised, trustable set of structures and mechanisms. SCRIPSIT has its eponymous origin in the Latin word scripsit, meaning "he or she wrote".

In recent year, there are more issues that has been needed to research due to foreign students has been increased. The final purpose of designing of Public categories on line in the library is to satisfy the requirements of the users, even though the foreign students are the minority of the user in the library, however, we have to understand their requirements in order to provide service for them to meet their needs. This study is taking the method of quality research, to find out the problems and their proposal regarding the system when they are using the on-line public category. We focus on 13 foreign students who have registered by means of interview and observation to collect information for this study. The final results are the problems is mostly the same as regular students when they are using WebPAC, however, the major issue of the foreign students have com out with capability of language, skill of search, and designation of the system. In this concern, we have following recommendations: 1. WebPAC search system 1). English search interface has to show all English. 2). Providing auxiliary description of Chinese and English on-line. 3). Clear remark of search wording in the search result. 4). Redesign the search frame (Make it simple on the select items). 5). Increasing more search functions (ex. Fuzzy Search). 6). Review the functions of search engine website service (ex. Google). 2. Service for the users 1). Find out the requirements of the foreign students. 2). Library should actively education course of how to use library for the foreign students. 3). Upgrading the English capability of the employee of the Library. 4). Expanding the width and depth of the collections in the library. 5). Providing comparative description of how to change the way of input. 6). Innovation of classification. Hopefully, above all recommendations would be able to promote the designation of WebPAC system and more service for the foreign students.
