Full textIn order to use a timber truck with 74 ton gross weight in Swedish traffic, a permit from the Swedish transport administration is required. A document shows which roads and bridges the vehicle is allowed to traffic and what rules applies when driving the vehicle. The forest company Sveaskog started a thesis with the aim to create the possibility to determine in real time, which roads and bridges that are part of the transport permit. This should be done by developing a map support for the truck's on-board computer with connection to GPS to visualise the permit of the specified road sections and bridges. The result of the thesis is a map support using services provided by ArcGIS Online to present geographic information to the user. The background map consist of a base map from ArcGIS Online. On top of the background map is a GIS layer with roads and another layer with bridges. Information about whether the vehicle currently is travelling on a road included in the permit or not, as well as information about rules that applies to bridges on the road section, is presented to the driver in real time. This information is updated at each update of the GPS position.

An interactive, online geographic information system (GIS) was developed to enhance the involvement of stakeholders in the public participation processes of site selection issues in the marine environment. Displaying educational material and interactive maps of relevant data, this new tool allows users to input personal preferences for the criteria they value in the siting decision, and produces a map showing the most and least suitable sites according to the user's weighting of the criteria. Current decision-making processes focus on finding an optimum solution from a number of alternatives using an objective analysis of the criteria, but are often inaccessible to many stakeholders, and do not consider the fairness of the outcome to the stakeholders. This tool is intended to educate stakeholders and enhance their involvement in the public decision-making process. To demonstrate the interactive, online GIS concept, a website called eSite was assembled, using as its case study the hypothetical issue of siting marine reserves within the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Marine resource protection is a controversial issue with many stakeholders in New England, where fishing in the Gulf of Maine has a long history, and human activities have had significant impacts on the marine environment. Marine reserves are an emerging tool for protecting marine ecosystems and enhancing marine resources, and the siting of reserves is an important emerging issue. Pre and post-surveys were conducted as part of the demonstration site to evaluate eSite. It was shown to be effective at increasing understanding of marine reserves and was perceived as a useful tool in improving the decision-making process.

Full textNowadays, travel agencies acknowledge the existence of the Internet as inevitable to the way that they conduct business. It should be immediately considered in the strategy setting stages. The positioning of the organization in the market should be defined as online or offline, in order to articulate the product to the intended market. The pace of innovation is today increasingly more accelerated, with diverse effects to the travel agencies, shifting the focus to the costumer, drawing more attention to the satisfaction of their demands and also to the prediction of their needs. Information systems, Intranet and Extranet have, in this context, doubled importance since these tools are an essential part to the success of travel agencies and organizations in general. The methodology applied to this essay involves a questioning survey to travel agencies, independent or attached to larger national groups, in Madeira Island. Its main objective was to size the importance that each of these attributes to information technologies and the way that the Internet is influencing their behavior concerning the client’s assistance.

Full textEvery year, an amount of 107 tons of soot is produced on the world scale. Soot, as part of atmospheric black carbon, has serious impacts on climate change and human health. The impacts depend on many factors including adsorbed compounds, aging and mixing processes. Therefore in order to reduce the soot amount, besides considering these mentioned factors, the study of formation kinetics, structure and optical properties is also essential. There are several methods applied in soot investigations. Raman spectroscopy plays a particular role as it is a powerful tool for structural investigation of the carbon-based materials because it is sensitive to molecular structures. In this work, differential Raman cross sections of soot and some other carbonaceous particles were measured to progress toward quantitative Raman spectroscopy. Soot particles produced by premixed ethylene flames at a low pressure were investigated by ex-situ Raman measurement on deposited films and in-situ(online) Raman measurement in the gas phase. Combination of the Raman spectroscopy of soot sampled on substrates with infrared and optical spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy allowed progressing on the interpretation of soot Raman spectra. The online gas phase measurements provided a novel view on soot birth and structures in low pressure flames with, for instance, the detection of a large amount of sp hybrized carbon atoms during nascent soot growth. These studies pave the way to soot detection and analysis directly and quantitatively in the atmosphere

For the drilling process to succeed, it is necessary the use of a drilling fluid. The measurement of rheological properties from these fluids becomes important in order to allow good hydraulic gusher maintenance and management. If these measures are taken in an on- line order that will mean agility in decision-making about the maintenance of the properties of the fluid and it will result in savings of thousands of dollars during the drilling of a well. It is in this context that this current report, developed in the UFRRJ laboratory of fluid flow, aims to evaluate the performance of a modified and calibrated process viscometer, making it a unique equipment for conducting real-time measures of apparent viscosity and thixotropy curve. The process viscometer chosen has the geometry of coaxial cylinders being, thus similar to the current workbench equipment used in drilling rigs. The modified viscometer performance was confronted with the rheometer benchtop Haake Rheostress 1. Different compositions of fluids, containing assorted concentrations of viscosifier polymers and suspension solid have been tested. The results indicated that there was an agreement on the results towards a considered error permissible for a viscometer process. The online viscometer brings a pioneering real-time measuring capacity and plotting of rheological behavior curves towards the current technology used in drilling operation.

Full textPyrolysis is the primary step in all thermochemical transformations of solids and therefore the detailed characterization of the pyrolysis products and the understanding of the involved mechanisms are mandatory. In this context, this PhD thesis aims to study the slow pyrolysis of PET using different analytical devices. In the first part, slow pyrolysis experiments (5 °C/min) were carried out in a tubular reactor for four final temperatures ranging from 410 °C to 480 °C. Unlike other studies from the literature, light products as well as heavy products were identified. The non-condensable gas was analyzed online using Gas micro-Chromatography (μ-GC), which allows acquiring the gas temporal profiles. The carbonyl compounds were trapped, derivatized and analyzed by High Performance - Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The waxy products were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and by Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) using an Electrospray Ionization (ESI). Some waxy molecules were quantified by Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry and Flame Ionization Detection (GC/MS-FID). The characterization of the solid residue was performed by FT-ICR MS coupled with Laser Desorption ionization (LDI). In the second part, the formation kinetics of volatile compounds during PET pyrolysis was studied using a Thermogravimetric Analyzer coupled with mild ionization methods (SPI: Single Photon Ionization; REMPI: Resonance Enhanced Multiple Photon Ionization; APCI: Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization). The combination of these different techniques allowed a detailed characterization of the products and consequently the identification of reaction pathways of PET degradation, which are mostly molecular pathways

Full textDespite the ecological and sanitary awareness, worldwide consumption of pesticides is increasing. As these chemical products represent several adverse effects on human health and environment, measures should be taken in order to limit their impacts. Biocontrol products are proposed as an alternative solution of the synthetic products. In fact, these “biopesticides” are presumed to be less harmful and relatively less persistent. However, this a priori must be examined and strict risk assessment of those new substances should be considered. The development of biocontrol solutions proceeds first of all through the proposed protocols to study their activity and their environmental fate and impact. Currently, half-life (DT50) is used in order to evaluate the environmental fate of synthetic pesticides. However, DT50 approach gives only information about pesticides' persistence in the environment, but no indications concerning the formation of degradation products or its impact on biodiversity are provided. Furthermore, biocontrol products are complex (bio)chemical mixes. The DT50 is not applicable for such complex products. Therefore, novel analytical approaches should be considered in order to overcome these difficulties.A novel approach based on meta-metabolomics and Mass Spectrometry; the “Environmental Metabolic Footprinting” (EMF), was recently introduced. It affords a novel universal and integrative proxy; the “resilience time”, dedicated to assess the environmental fate and impact of complex (bio)pesticides in environmental matrices (e.g. soil, sediment). Nonetheless, the development of such Mass Spectrometry-based untargeted meta-metabolomics approach needs to be in-depth studied. Several tasks should be addressed: 1) performant extraction protocols and GC/LC-(HR)MS-based analytical methods should be set up, 2) suitable data processing and chemometric tools should be developed to deal with the complexity of the generated datasets, 3) the impact of xenometabolome complexity on MS-based analyses should be assessed, and 4) the study of the volatile residues should be considered and thus needs new analytical methodologies to be developed. The work was carried out following 3 main axes. The first axis addressed 1) the development of extraction protocols and LC-HRMS methods to analyze both pesticides xenometabolites and soil endometabolites, and 2) the development of a novel chemometric approach to assess the extraction performance. Novel extraction protocols have been proven optimal for the EMF, and the chemometric approach was thus validated. The second axis assessed the impact of xenometabolome complexity on the determination of environmental biomarkers. Ion suppression was revealed and thus a pragmatic strategy has been developed to overcome its influence. The third axis aimed to set-up a novel methodology in order to analyze the volatile residues of complex pesticides. HS-SPME-GC-MS analyses were coupled to chemometrics in order to perform kinetics studies and to follow the transformation of the volatile residues. The chemometric workflow proved its reliability to explain pesticide’s transformation and novel xenometabolites and by-products were identified. In conclusion, significant advances were carried to the EMF. It has been consolidated for laboratory and field applications that must be investigated in order to improve the proxy and to validate it as a reliable approach for pesticides risk evaluation

ABSTRACT In this study, an online gas measurement system is developed to measure the gas composition before and after explosion tests. This system uses an auto-sampling system to sample gases into a gas chromatography coupled with thermal conductivity detector (TCD) which capable of qualitative and quantitative analysis. The data will be useful for determine the flammability limits and the relationship between composition change and explosion pressure rise. In the explosion testing system, the pressure balancing and double containment vessel design is adapted. With an igniter, a premix vessel, and a fast data acquisition system, the system is a simple and safe apparatus that is capable of testing explosion at elevated pressures. In the analytical system, a gas sampling line is first connected from the explosion system to a buffer to reduce pressure and confine flow rate. The sampled gas is routed to a gas feed valve. The valve alternates the sampled gas into two different columns, PLOT-Q (Porous layer open tubular column - 30m×0.53mm) and PLOT-5A (Molecular sieves 5Å-30m×0.53mm), for separating all gases before entering the TCD. This online system is validated to have linearity greater than 0.9950 for CO, CO2, O2, and CH4. Accuracy was within 101.4±8.7〜105.4±5.9%. Precision was within 2.9- 4.3%. The method detection limit was found to be around 0.01%. The whole system is validated with different sources of gases and its reliability is found to within 99-106 %. Explosion tests for CO/CH4 (2:8 mixture) and pure CH4 were performed at pressure of 0.6 MPa. It is found that the upper flammability limits of CO/CH4 (2:8) mixture and pure CH4 lie at air concentration of 75.8% and 78.5%, respectively. Small pressure rises were found in CO/CH4 tests where small amount of CO2 were also found but their concentrations were less than quantifiable range (QDL<0.1%). Furthermore, there is no CO formed in these tests. It is suspected that the small pressure rise was a localized reaction of methane around the fusing ignition wire rather than a partial oxidation of methane. Insufficient oxygen prevents the reaction to propagate into the bulk gases. Thus, it is concluded that the cool flame be excluded from the definition of upper flammability. For air concentration greater than 76.00%, the explosion tests generated significant overpressure, which also showed significant CO and CO2 generation, indicating true combustion. Repeating analysis of gases from explosion testing showed all data falling into 2.90-3.51% range. This indicates this online analysis system is reliable, fast and applicable to explosion testing.

As an idiom, “a miss is as good as a mile”, it is the best description for how tiny errors lead to extreme inaccuracy of measurement. This study lists various kinds of gas flowmeters commonly used in Taiwan, explains their mechanisms, enumerates their differences, and introduces the standards of measurement issued by institutes in different countries as references to gas flow measurement. The power plant in our study uses a differential pressure flowmeter, which measures volumetric flow. The operating procedures included the inspection of the natural gas flow system in the power plant and each component of the gas flowmeter in the generator set. Calibration of the flow meter, in which the flowmeter shall be used as the test piece, was performed based on the methods proposed by the Instrument Society of America (ISA). Because of the difficulties and safety concerns of disassembling the flowmeter and sending to other domestic laboratories for calibration, the Coriolis force mass flowmeter was used as a standard meter and was connected in series to the flow meter in the generator set to measure the true flow. With the fact that mass flowmeters have characteristic of not being affected by the environment of pipelines, the data of the component of natural gas was collected by the Gas Chromatography (GC) in the power plant, the density of natural gas was calculated based on the standard of American Gas Association (AGA) 8, and the mass flow of the standard meter was converted into the referred volume flow. However, since the power plant was in operation and the standard meter cannot be installed on the pipeline. The data of actual operations was collected instead for analysis in this study. Through the internal Reynold Number vs Discharge Coefficient (Re vs Cd) table, and AGA 3 calculation function, the gradual corrected results of test meter can be simulated in order to reach the correction target.

This study was conducted to a general understanding of the use of a milli-whistle as a gas chromatography (GC) detector in gas analysis. The milli-whistle is connected to the outlet of a GC capillary, and when the eluted gases and the GC carrier gas pass through it, a sound with a fundamental frequency is produced. The sound wave can be picked up by a microphone, and after a fast Fourier transform, the online data obtained for frequency-change vs. retention time constitute a new method for detecting gases with LabVIEW(Laboratory Virtual Engineer Workbench). In order to improve the efficiency of fermentation, in this study, yeast strain, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, using electrostatic spinning technology coated inside to the PLLA (poly-L-lactide; PLLA) microtubule arrays film. Yeast activated in film will not be affected. The film can be recycled and continue to use, reduce the cost of making ethanol. In this study, the fermentation broth and yeast that has been coated inside to fibers put into the container together to ferment. Using of program control self-assembled solenoid valve, the fermentation process produces ethanol and carbon dioxide vapors, etc., at 5-minute intervals, automatically injected into the capillary column to separate and record. Experimental results show that the use of our developed device, we can immediately detect and track fermentation. The experiment apparatus can detect at least 4 days with fully automated. According to the amount of change in frequency, it can instantly detect the concentration of ethanol that is in fermentation broth。

The use of an accelerometer as a gas detector in gas chromatography (GC) is described for the first time. A milli-whistle was connected to the outlet of the GC capillary. When the eluted and GC carrier gases pass through the capillary and milli-whistle, a sound is produced. After a fast Fourier transform (FFT), the sound wave generated from the milliwhistle is picked up by a microphone and the resulting vibration of the milliwhistle body can be recorded by an accelerometer. The release of hydrogen gas, as the result of thermal energy, from ammonia borane (NH3BH3), which has been suggested as a storage medium for hydrogen, was selected as the model sample. The findings show that the frequencies generated, either by sound or by the vibration from the whistle body, were identical. The concentration levels of the released hydrogen gas can be determined online, based on the frequency changes. Ammonia borane was placed in a brass reservoir, heated continually, and the released hydrogen gas was directly injected into the GC inlet at 0.5 min intervals, using a home-built electromagnetic pulse injector. The concentration of hydrogen for each injection can be calculated immediately. When the ammonia borane was encapsulated within a polycarbonate (PC) microtube array membrane, the temperature required for the release of hydrogen can be decreased, which would make such a material more convenient for use. The findings indicate that 1.0 mg of ammonia borane can produce hydrogen in the range of 1.0−1.25 mL, in the temperature range of 85−115 °C.
