Stigson, Gustav, and Nore Torbiörnsson. "Online branding hos svenska banker : En kvalitativ studie av fyra svenska bankers arbete med online branding." Thesis, Jönköping University, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-7616.

Full text
Abstract:

Internet påverkar vår vardag i allra högsta grad.

The fact that internet affects our everyday lives cannot be argued. Our routines have changed and so have the routines for companies. The companies now have to communicate to their customers using new methods. One industry that early adopted the digital technology is the banking industry. But how do they meet their customers on the digital arena? How do they manage their brands from a digital perspective?

The aim of this study is to see how four of the Swedish banks are working with online branding and communication through digital channels. The study has two interesting viewpoints, to see the trends in online branding for banks and to see the future for brand management in the banking industry. As the theoretical foundation the writers has chosen to make the study through a theoretical framework called ”i-Branding”.

The method used in the study is qualitative interviews with key persons from the different banks. Furthermore the study has a hermeneutic viewpoint and the goal is to interpret the results and through this describe and explain the phenomena.

Key results that the study shows are that all of the banks see online branding and the internet as very important in their work with brand management. The banks however cannot separate online brand management from the traditional brand management. All the banks state that it is the meeting with the customer that has to be the central point, wherever it takes place. The banks also had a lot of thoughts on how the internet could be of better use in their brand management but it was a lack of actual activity from the banks. Regarding the future, all banks said that the impact of internet is going to increase and take shares from the traditional mass media. Two of the banks also said that they thought that the mobile phone is the next big channel for communication.

"Branding of two-sided online marketplaces : An integrative model to comprehend the reciprocity within vlaue creation and branding of two-sided online marketplaces." Thesis, Högskolan i Jönköping, Internationella Handelshögskolan, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-35788.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Online marketplaces constitute one of the most successful business innovations of the Web 2.0. Nonetheless so far no branding theory has been connected to the topic of two-sided online marketplaces. This might be due to the high complexity and reciprocity of their value creation which however needs to be in order to apply any marketing and branding strategies.   Purpose:       Therefore, the purpose is to understand and clarify the value creation processes of two-sided online marketplaces and develop branding theory based on the findings thereof.   Method:        Within this thesis we conducted qualitative research.  The study is built on semi-structured interviews with 15 respondents that have used various two-sided online marketplaces either as sellers and buyers.   Conclusion: In order to understand the various variables of two-sided online marketplaces business model, we have identified, conceptualized and extended an integrative model to manage and brand their value. With the knowledge resulting from our literature review we built a model illustrating all pillars which influence value creation and thus brand perception and extended this model with the results of our own research. We have identified that while user behavior and preferences generally remain heterogeneous, commonalities such as social influences and convenience stick out most often for both user sides. Both pillars have barely been covered by research, which solely focused on network effects, price allocation and trust.

Larsson, Jenny, and Maria Törnqvist. "Online Brand Perception : Functionality and Representationality in the Printer Manufacturing Industry." Thesis, Jönköping University, Jönköping International Business School, 2005. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-217.

Full text
Abstract:

Background and problem: As Internet usage has become increasingly common and important in our society it is crucial for companies to acknowledge the impact of online branding. As differences between products are decreasing it is no longer sufficient to compete solely on price or quality. Thus the importance of brands and branding is increasing. Even though branding is a heavily research topic, almost all research has been performed with consumer markets in mind, more or less ignoring industrial markets. This is done in spite of most markets being predominated by industrial firms.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how printer manufac-turers’ online brand messages can be perceived regarding functional benefits and representational satisfaction, and how this may affect the examined brands.

Method: To fulfil our purpose we chose to conduct a qualitative method, since this would provide us with in-depth answers. To structure our study we created a questionnaire to use as an analysical tool for our examination of the selected companies.

Conclusions: The conclusions drawn from this study are that printer manufacturers mainly emphasise the functional factors of their products to a large extent. Further, almost all brands of our sample can be perceived to be augmented ones. Of the few companies with highly developed brands, those with separate web sites for business and consumer buyers were in majority. Finally, since most printer manufacturers stress functionality the added-value of their brands is not as sustainable as it could be.

Weil, Ari. "Terrorist Celebrity: Online Personal Branding and Jihadist Recruitment and Planning." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2018. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/pomona_theses/206.

Full text
Abstract:
Shifts in culture and technology have changed the manifestation of celebrity in modern society, culminating in the practice of internet microcelebrity, where one views followers as fans, produces content consistent with a personal brand, and engages in strategic interaction with devotees. This thesis examines how those effects have also changed how terrorists present themselves and operationalize celebrity status. An original typology of terrorist celebrity is presented: traditional, martyr, and internet micro-celebrity. Two in-depth case studies of terrorist micro-celebrities are analyzed: Anwar al-Awlaki of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and Junaid Hussain of the Islamic State. The case studies are examined through content analysis of social media postings, personal chat transcripts, as well as mainstream media coverage of the individuals used to reconstruct their biographies. Following mainstream trends, these terrorist internet celebrities have built personal brands that target specific communities. Awlaki targeted English-speaking Muslims living in the West and IS foreign fighters like Hussain often target young people in the fighter’s countries of origin. Their online personas are created to be relatable and engaging to those specific audiences. Ultimately, mainstream celebrity trends have bled into terrorist behavior. By creating brands and managing them through micro-celebrity practices, terrorists have effectively weaponized online celebrity, using it for recruitment and planning.

Kania-Lundholm, Magdalena. "Re-Branding A Nation Online : Discourses on Polish Nationalism and Patriotism." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Sociologiska institutionen, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-180903.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is two-fold. First, the discussion seeks to understand the concepts of nationalism and patriotism and how they relate to one another. In respect to the more critical literature concerning nationalism, it asks whether these two concepts are as different as is sometimes assumed. Furthermore, by problematizing nation-branding as an “updated” form of nationalism, it seeks to understand whether we are facing the possible emergence of a new type of nationalism. Second, the study endeavors to discursively analyze the ”bottom-up” processes of national reproduction and re-definition in an online, post-socialist context through an empirical examination of the online debate and polemic about the new Polish patriotism. The dissertation argues that approaching nationalism as a broad phenomenon and ideology which operates discursively is helpful for understanding patriotism as an element of the nationalist rhetoric that can be employed to study national unity, sameness, and difference. Emphasizing patriotism within the Central European context as neither an alternative to nor as a type of nationalism may make it possible to explain the popularity and continuous endurance of nationalism and of practices of national identification in different and changing contexts. Instead of facing a new type of nationalism, we can then speak of new forms of engagement which take place in cyberspace that contribute to the process of reproduction of nationalism. The growing field of nation-branding, with both its practical and political implications, is presented as one of the ways in which nationalism is reproduced and maintained as a form of “soft” rather than “hard” power within the global context. The concept of nation re-branding is introduced in order to account for the role that citizens play in the process of nation branding, which has often been neglected in the literature. This concept is utilized to critically examine, understand, and explain the dynamics of nation brand construction and re-definition, with a particular focus on the discursive practices of citizens in cyberspace. It is argued that citizens in the post-socialist countries, including Poland, can engage in the process of nation re-branding online. It is also argued that this process of online nation re-branding may legitimately be regarded as a type of civic practice through which citizens connect with each other and reproduce a form of cultural national intimacy. The results of the analysis of the online empirical material illustrate that nation re-branding is a complex, dynamic, and ambivalent phenomenon. It involves a process of discursive negotiation of nation and of national identity, but also challenges, dismantles, and transforms the national image as it is communicated both internally and externally. This reveals nation re-branding as an element in the post-socialist transformation from a ”nation” to a ”Western,” ”modern,” and ”normal” country in which dealing with an ”old” nation brand is as equally important as the introduction of the new brand. Nationalism does not disappear in the digital age, but rather becomes part of the new way of doing politics online, whereby citizens are potentially granted a form of agency in the democratic process.

Abstract:
This thesis if focused on brand building on the internet and possibilities brought to this filed by usage of systems methodologies. SWOT analysis is widely used in marketing, but it is focused solely on evaluating the current state of things and there is no formal framework to connect branding with marketing. Critical Systems Heuristics (CSH) methodology is used to supplement traditional marketing approaches. CSH consists of 12 boundary questions which can be used to define ideal state of analyzed systems. CSH methodology is then used to create a draft of Monoe brand, which will stand for a provider of photographical and graphical services. Based on gathered information from boundary questions, a website for the brand was created and promotion on social networks was also started. This practical use of CSH shoved that the boundary questions are too vague to be properly used in branding, but mostly address the right fields. Because of that, the boundary questions were modified. The asset of this thesis is modifying CSH methodology so it can be used as a framework to build brands on the internet.

Abstract:
This thesis was carried out during Spring semester 2012 at Södertörn University in collaboration with the Swedish distance selling company Halens. Halens is one of Sweden’s leading e-commerce companies with a significant history in distance selling. The company started as a mail-order company but their current and future goals are directed towards full e-commercialization. Halens has expanded to several international markets and their assortment consists mainly of women’s apparel, but also includes men’s wear, children’s wear and electronics. The purpose of this thesis is to find ways to improve the image of traditional mail-order companies that are going through a transition towards e-commerce. It has a specific look on branding and brand repositioning and the aim is to give suggestions on how to improve the image and attracting new customers while maintaining the loyal customer base that companies have gained. This includes identifying the pros and cons of the companies’ current position as well as viewing the modern possibilities that e-commercialization brings. Four interviews were conducted in order to obtain up-to-date information. Two of the people who were interviewed are employees at Halens whose work is closely related to the subject of this thesis. The data that was obtained from them deals with the company’s current activities and goals in terms of repositioning their brand. Another viewpoint is met with two consumer interviews, where information is received from different attitudes towards Halens. One of the interviewed is a long-time Halens customer, while the second one has never purchased from Halens. In addition, our own observations have been conducted for deeper analysis of the study. As one of us is a Halens employee it has given us direct access to collect data about the company image and compare our perceptions with one another. A clear view of the brand repositioning requirements that have appeared with the transition towards e-commerce has been established during this essay. Results have shown an apparent need for modernizing and investing in renewal of brand image as a mail-order company moving in to online marketing.

Full text
Abstract:

Meuer, Rebecca. "Online Self-Presentation During Transition : Qualitative Study about Personal Branding and the Self in Transition."

Full text
Abstract:
Up until now, there has only been a limited amount of research in the field of online self- presentation in combination with young adults transitioning from a social to a professional self online. The purpose of this thesis is to extend the existing literature and address the gap by exploring how students present themselves before, during and after the transition from university to work. The study was built on the self-presentation theory by Erving Goffman (1959) in combination with the role identity theory as well as the career development framework by Donald Super (1980). To answer the research question and fulfill the purpose of this study an exploratory research method in combination with a qualitative, inductive research approach was chosen. Ten long, semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted using the long interview guide by McCracken. Individuals from Germany and Sweden between the ages of 21 and 26 were interviewed. The main findings showed that young adults categorize social media networks into two categories: private (social) and public (professional) applications. Individuals of the establishment phase meaning after transition to work represent a more professional self and alter other parts of the self. This process takes place over time and the representation of a professional self increased in importance and relevance. Individuals of the exploration phase meaning before transitioning to work show intentional behavior patterns towards their social self but not professional self. Therefore, the further individuals move towards the next life phase the more the presentation of the self moves towards a professional and intentional appearance online when in front stage. When in backstage privacy settings enable a carefully chosen audience for the more private self to be shared. The process of online self-presentation on social media is still a more intuitive process but the transition between different types of self can be linked to a stronger identification with a new life role.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Lee, Jinwoo. "Cultural branding of young and emerging contemporary artists : the role of art fairs and online platforms." Thesis, University of Kent, 2018. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/67652/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to analyse the process of branding young and emerging artists in the contemporary art market, focusing on the valuation of works of art. The ambiguous borderline of being a work of art in terms of appearance poses a challenge for the market, which requires an explanation of its symbolic value and meaning. A thick, multifarious group of intermediaries in the art world contributes to the construction of legitimacy for artists and their artworks, engendering the understanding of such value. Through the legitimation process, artworks by young and emerging artists are rendered accepted and validated, thereby branding them. Some researchers on arts marketing have explored the valuation process by applying socio-cultural perspective on branding. However, such application has empirically overlooked two important mediums: art fairs and online platforms. Theoretically, the complex and fluid valuation structure in the art market, driven by the uncertain value of contemporary art and the repositioning of inner members of the art world, is a compelling research issue to be explored at the societal level. To do so, this thesis begins with investigating Andy Warhol's Brillo Box. This research also explores Frieze London and the Other Art Fair by collecting data from direct observation and secondary sources. The research additionally conducts an instrumental case study of Saatchi Art, using data from interviews, observation, and document reviews. The key finding of the historical case is that the legitimacy of Warhol and his artworks was shaped by various elements such as the intermediaries, a myth in society, an artistic movement, the artists' persona and social networks. Moreover, the empirical cases of art fairs and an online platform enact the functions of discovering, introducing, instructing, and including young and emerging artists. This indicates that these institutions play the role of intermediaries and contribute to framing the legitimacy of the artists and artworks, thereby branding new artists. Although art fairs and an online platform hold varying positions in the hierarchical order of valuing artworks in the art world (depending on the extent of their accumulated symbolic value), it is noteworthy that such mediums, which did not exist in the hierarchical structure before the twentieth century, have become important insiders in the structure. However, this research concludes that this change does not substantially reconstitute the stratified structure of the art world that has existed prior to their emergence. The theoretical contribution of this thesis lies in extending the application of Holt's (2004) theory of cultural branding to the context of arts. Building on the recent literature on cultural branding of artists (Kerrigan et al. 2011; Hewer, Brownlie and Kerrigan 2013; Muñiz, Norris and Fine 2014; Preece and Kerrigan 2015; Rodner and Preece 2015), this thesis conceptualises the process of legitimising young and emerging artists and their artworks as normative and cultural-cognitive legitimacy shaped by intermediaries through the stages of discovery, introduction, instruction, and selection. Moreover, by drawing on sociological arguments by Becker (1984) and Bourdieu (1996), the conceptual framework of the present study acknowledges the hierarchical structure of the art market and intricate interactions among intermediaries in the art world.

The purpose of this Bachelor’s Thesis Project in Business Administration is to investigate how companies communicate their company brand identity online. The writing of this paper has been motivated by a lack of researches regarding the companies’ dimension in term of identity communication and the brand identity promotion process online. This paper is based on a quantitative research on companies from French and Swedish. The research question is formulated as follows: How companies communicate their brand identity online through virtual media? In order to investigate the companies, a questionnaire was implemented and shared by an emailing process. This questionnaire, following a quantitative approach, has been constructed by combining several theories about the branding process, the brand identity concept, its keys concepts and also the online business landscape since the development of the Internet. According to our analysis, companies mainly share their brand identity online through two main vehicles, Website and Facebook. These media are the ones mainly used to share the three identity dimensions and to support the tools to communicate this company brand identity communication. By this analysis, deeper knowledge was created in order to provide useful data for future analysis.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this thesis is, looking from a consumer’s perspective, to investigate the influences of students website selection Background Today’s students are a new generation of consumers. They have been brought up with digi-tal media and have different attitudes towards marketing than their parents. Most market management theories were created before the digital revolution. Students are tomorrow’s high income consumers. It is valuable for companies to understand how these consumers orientate themselves on the internet and how to best reach them. Method An exploratory/explanatory deductive study to map what websites students use, how the websites are found and why they are used was conducted. The empirical findings were col-lected through group interviews. Conclusion Students have a very habitual behavior on the internet. They use some of the internet’s largest brands. Each website offers a niche and specialized service, presented in a simple and interactive manner. Students choose one website for each specific service. As the in-ternet is large with a lot of information they have a cluster of chore websites visited on a regular basis. From that base, students use friends and search engines to navigate them-selves to the destinations of their choice. Advertisement offer more trust than enticement to actually visit the sites.

Abstract:
During the last decade, IT had a big burst. The introduction of smartphones and tablets that are always connected to the Internet changed our way of “consuming” it. All that lead to digitalization of betting services and moving them to the Internet. In their early days online betting services had an easy job to do regarding positioning, they only needed to exist on the Internet and that attracted customers. But, times have changed and online betting services face new challenges. They must find a clear positioning and have a competitive advantage over their competitors, but that is not an easy task to do. Therefore, this study concentrated on the investigation of the positioning for these services. Case study approach was chosen for this thesis and the investigated company was Betsson Group, which is one of the bigger companies with many brands in their portfolio. However, the research was delimited to their three most popular brands: Betsson, Betsafe and NordicBet with exception to text mining where Bet365 (a competitor) were also analyzed. Empirical data gather during this study came from interviews at the case company, questionnaire with customers and through text mining of online betting services reviews. The study resulted in finding the gap, in positioning, between the company, the customers and the online reviewers. Customers view and reviewers view align quite well, however company view is completely unaligned. When choosing an online betting service, customers mostly care about best odds, bonuses and variety of bets, where on the other hand companies position themselves in a static way with targets group of folksy, nerdy and luxurious. Customers tend to not care about the brand positioning, and push companies into a price war, however, they need to know the brand in order to trust it with their money. The study contributes to understanding the customers view when they choose an online betting service and this aspect can be generalized for the online betting industry as a whole. Moreover, some of the theories can be applied to other online services where best price is searched for.

Abstract:
The rise of digital media has caused transformations and new phenomena in different fields. In the digital age such branches as personal sports branding and nation branding has acquired new opportunities for development. The research focuses on representation of the personal sports brand of Zlatan Ibrahimovic on digital media platforms and its connection to the nation brand of Sweden. Previous research deals with existing studies on personal branding, personal sports branding in digital media, and nation branding. Theoretical framework includes appropriate concepts and perspectives that guide the analysis such as the TOPSTAR model, theory on types and specialization of personal brands, advertising, cultural branding and the nation brand of Sweden. The study combines different research techniques: quantitative content analysis and semiotics. The data is gathered from official accounts of Zlatan Ibrahimovic on social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the mobile application Zlatan Unplugged. Furthermore, the data for analysis is also received from YouTube videos concerning two campaigns: the Volvo XC70 commercial and “805 million names” awareness campaign by World Food Program. The results of the research outline main characteristics of the personal sport brand, show differences in representation of the brand depending on digital media platform and identify the leading attributes of the personal sports brand. The investigation uncovers a connection between the personal sports brand of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the nation brand of Sweden and shows how the personal sports brand functions on the cultural level. The thesis might be interesting for both researchers and practitioners in the spheres of media and communication studies, personal sports branding and nation branding.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Titel: Konsumenters emotioner gentemot det personliga varumärket – En kvalitativ studie. Nivå: Examensarbete på Grundnivå (kandidatexamen) i ämnet företagsekonomi. Författare: Rebecca Enblom och Amanda Pettersson. Handledare: Jonas Molin och Lars-Johan Åge. Datum: 2019 – Juni.
Title: Consumers emotions towards the personal brand – A qualitative study. Level: Student thesis, final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration. Author: Rebecca Enblom and Amanda Pettersson. Supervisor: Jonas Molin and Lars-Johan Åge. Date: 2019 – June. Aim: The aim of this study is to contribute to a deeper understanding of how written self-presentations affect the potential consumers’ emotions towards the personal brand. Method: The study is based on a qualitative research method with an inductive approach and a hermeneutic research tradition. In order to study the potential consumers’ emotions towards the personal brand, data has mainly been collected through ten semi-structured interviews. These have later been analyzed by using a thematic analysis. Result & Conclusions: Findings from this study show that short and well-structured self-presentations create a good first impression. The self-presentations should be formed in a way that creates curiosity among potential consumers. It is also important that the presentations bring out a feeling of commitment and trust. Contribution of the thesis: This research contributes knowledge about how real estate agents and other professionals can create a personal brand in form of a self-presentation. This with the purpose to generate positive emotions among potential consumers. As a result, the study fills the research gap we found on the subject of the personal brand. Suggestions for future research: Given that a qualitative research method has been used, the result is not possible to generalize. Therefore, we are requesting a similar study with a quantitative approach. It would also be interesting to study the correlation between emotions towards the personal brand and personality features. Finally, we propose a continued research about social media’s impact on consumers’ emotions towards the personal brand.  Key words: Personal brand, branding, digital marketing, online marketing, self-presentation, emotions.

Abstract:
My final thesis project analyzes self-branding, online influencers, and microcelebrity culture that contribute to shaping self-identity on social media. The project focuses on online identity through the lens of digitally created or cyborg accounts made for the purpose of promoting consumer culture lifestyle. Cultural notions around celebrity culture as a means of profit are expanding and are more inclusive due to social media formats that nurture self-branding and self-promotion. Companies take advantage of personalized media creation and distribution by using online influencers to promote products because of the minimal payouts and labor required. Therefore, ideologies of buying and selling become deeply rooted online and have come to change its users’ conceptions of themselves and shape an identity linked almost exclusively with the internet across platforms. Self-branding, online influencers, and microcelebrity culture are distinct forms of labor on social media that generate value through branding and shaping a profit driven self-identity that leads to the erosion of a meaningful distinction between notions of the self and the production and consumption imperatives that benefit digital entrepreneurialism.

Abstract:
This general purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate how businesses and consumers are co-creating brand value on social media by sharing photos on Instagram. The main focus is two-fold, one is to look at how corporations like Nike and Starbucks are utilizing Instagram to engage customers; another is to look at how customers presenting brand images and identify with brand personalities. This research analyzed 238 customer-created images and 62 corporate-created Instagram images using a hybrid method of qualitative content analysis and thematic analysis as an empirical way to explore the big picture of this new and understudied topic. The data was collected through Keyhole and Statigram, two online social media analytical tools. The analysis of the data shows overall positive brand image sharing among customers, implicit, indirect tactics in companies' official image sharing, and customers' use of brand as a way to promote and express themselves. Overall, customers' brand value co-creation practice on Instagram focus heavily on the individuals' self expression rather than brand community building. The study also discovered valuable themes of the use of selfies and the self-directed sarcasm among Instagramers who share brand images. The findings showed an overall decentralizing brand value co-creation process and that marketers today will face more and more challenges in controlling and managing a consistent brand image. The study contributes to the understanding of visual communication and the new marketing paradigm in a visual centric digital culture.

Abstract:
Social media have become a widely used tool to communicate with the orgnisations stakeholders. Institutions of higher learning are also venturing into this new way of marketing and communication. This study intended to determine how South African institutions of higher learning are using social media for marketing and communication purposes. Firstly, a literature study was conducted to gain an understanding on how social media are used. Further an empirical study was conducted, which consisted of two phases. The first phase was a case study on NMMU and Stellenbosch University. Structured-interviews, focus groups and observation were used to collect data from the cases. The collected data were then used to construct a questionnaire that was used for a survey. The survey was distributed to all 23 universities, 50 public FET colleges and the 200 private FET college. 92 institutions responded to the survey. The findings prove that there are various opportuntities and challenges in using social media although it should be stressed that the opportunities outweigh the threats. There is no visible difference between colleges social media implementation in relation to institutions of higher learning. Most institutions use more than one social media tool. Facebook is the most widely used social media followed by Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn. Flickr, MXit, Google+ and Blog are the least used social media. The observations of the NMMU and Stellenbosch University show that these two institutions are striving to engage with their target audiences. Although the institutions are using social media, some of the concerns are that institutions are not measuring their social media use. For those who are measuring, most depend on the free measurement tools which focus only on the quantitative measure. The governance of the social media use is none existent. Most respondents stated that they do not have a policy or guidelines informing social media management. Most of the respondents felt that they want to use more social media tools in future although some of the challenges alluded to were lack of capacity, human resources and budget.

Vinyals-Mirabent, Sara. "Building urban destination brands in Europe: re-conceptualizing the relationship between brand image and brand personality in website communication practices." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/462852.

Abstract:
Destinations must project a strong and differentiated brand image to position themselves in a competitive market. To this end, official websites have become a key instrument in the portrayal of the desired image and as the place where tourists expect to find everything about the destination. In this study, the official websites of the 12 most popular urban destinations in Europe are analyzed with a two-fold purpose: to describe their projected image, and to explore the relationship between brand image and brand personality in their discourse. The results highlight cultural activities, tourist packages, and food and drink associations as the three core components of the European cities’ offer. Similarly, while all destinations project highly exciting personalities, the traits related to the other personality dimensions are those that differentiate the destinations in the competitive context. Finally, the study shows that some product-related associations are more likely to transmit specific personality traits.

Abstract:
Due to digitalization, marketing has shifted from traditional media into being common on the internet today. Dense content marketing is argued to be the strategy which is the most suitable for today’s online-society. Dense content focus on providing the customers with a lot of quality content in the smallest amount of space, weather it is through text, sound or picture. By using dense content, marketing communication is optimised to fit today’s customers who spend a lot of time on mobile devices. Instagram is a platform which provides an opportunity to both send out a company’s message by pictures through their own channel, but also through the usage of social media influencers and sponsored posts. Influencer marketing creates a shortcut to branding and dense content since some influencers has strong personal brands that transfers onto the brand. For companies, it is important to learn about dense content to be able to form a modern marketing strategy that differentiate them from their competitors. The purpose of this thesis was to research the effect of influencer marketing in dense content on brands on Instagram. Primary data has been collected through 15 qualitative interviews that was compared with the frame of references to create an analysis. The analysis is used to answer the research questions, identify branding strategies and increase knowledge about dense content. A part of the purpose was to identify strategies of branding through dense content on Instagram that can be useful for companies when developing their online marketing strategy. The study have provided information which makes it possible to identify strategies and make recommendations to companies that are interested in including this new marketing phonomenon into their branding strategies.

Abstract:
The advent and massification of the ICTs and the widespread use of internet have transformed the way in which traditional media such as ratio and television communicate with the audience, not only because of the technological shift itself, but because of the convergence culture undergoing as a result of the new relationships taking place online.   Particularly, we wonder how the news’ organizations based in traditional media are adapting to these changes. Our assumption is that, although the news’ organizations have understood and are currently using the online technologies to present their information in varied ways with the intention to reach a broader audience and to generate higher levels of engagement, still much needs to be analyzed on how the contents are handled through each particular online platform.   Along this study, we propose to introduce the rationale of Nation Branding from a Cultural/Critical perspective as a tool to analyze how transnational news organizations present their contents, since, even when their purpose might not be to carry out directly a Nation Branding strategy, they might be falling into the use of certain features of the Nation Branding logics.   In order to perform this analysis, we explore, from a reductionist approach, the ways in which the English section of Radio Sweden International (a branch of Sveriges Radio, the public radio service in Sweden) has developed its online strategy, trying to identify: 1) whether Radio Sweden International is appropriating the logics of Nation Branding in the way they present their information; 2) if the online strategy of Radio Sweden International is oriented (either directly or indirectly) to build and/or enhance the “Brand Sweden”; and 3) the ways in which Radio Sweden International uses each specific digital platform in its online strategy.   We collected 1893 elements across the Twitter account (760), the news’ website (620), the podcasts (422), and the Facebook page (91) of Radio Sweden International, which were submitted to the classifications of the Nation Branding model known as “Anholt’s hexagon”. What we found was that, although 70.4% of the elements do fit within Anholt’s hexagon, 29.6% of the elements did not fit, these last elements corresponding to Domestic News and Self-Promotion of the organization, reason why a new classification of these elements was due, giving as a result 9 new categories of information different from Anholt’s model.   As a result of our empirical study, we concluded that there are indeed similarities between the way in which Radio Sweden International presents its information, and the form in which the Cultural/Critical developing perspective of Nation Branding proposes how the nation communicates within the convergent, global and networked society. Although Radio Sweden International does not have the direct task of promoting the image of Sweden outside the country, the ways in which this organization presents its information and uses the different online platforms can be related to the way in which Nation Branding intends to construct the image of the country both, inside and outside Sweden.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT The internet has become one of the most powerful communication tools. Therefore, much has been written over the past few years about the rise and use of online communication, but there is still very limited research on the use of online communication by Generation Y members and corporations in an African context. Consequently, the internet has become one of the most powerful communication tool. This has led to the evolutions of the public relations discipline in keeping up with trends, embracing new opportunities and using diverse and effective communication mediums to engage with different stakeholders. This dissertation determines the contribution of online corporate communication to brand reputation amongst Generation Y members in the Vaal Region and the effect it can have on the perceived reputation of an organisation. This was done though ascertaining ways in which Generation Y in the Vaal Region (Evaton, Sebokeng and Vanderbijlpark) uses different online corporate communicate tools to engage with brands. This quantitative study used a cross-sectional descriptive research approach. Two hundred questionnaires that comprised of three sections namely: (1) demographics and sources of information, (2) online communication behaviour and (3) online reputation management were distributed amongst Generation Y members in the Vaal Region. The respondents were between the ages of 18-35, descriptive statistics such as frequencies, the mean, medium and the mode, factor analysis, t-tests and ANOVA were used to analyse the data obtained from the respondents. From the results it is evident that the growth of the internet and the development of smartphones, iPads and tablets have drastically changed the way people communicate, especially Generation Y members, thus leading brands to actively operate online. Social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube have taken over the technological aspect of two way interaction between customers and brands thereby influencing an organisation’s reputation. In as much as online communication has brought about change to the public relations discipline it has a detrimental impact on a company’s reputation if not managed properly. Therefore, companies that use online communication and those that do not use online communication should be aware of Generation Y’s online brand engagement, behaviour and expectation as this will have an effect on the organisations reputation when engaging with members from this group.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to create a graphic profile for the company Lyst Form AB. The company conducts an e-commerce and is selling handcrafted clothes made in natural material.   A theoretic part in the thesis studies how a brand can communicate on the internet. It’s important that the corporate identity is reflected through the graphic profile. The corporate identity can be explained as the soul of the company and can be seen through all of the graphic material. The graphic profile is a kind of visual identity and it’s containing a logotype, typography and colors for example. Several studies were made to reach the aim with the thesis. The target group of the company was important throughout the whole process. A research began with the company and their competitors. A survey was made by the target group to get their opinion about the company and its design. This information gathering gave a good foundation and a guideline in the development of the graphic profile. During the design process the proposed logos was discussed using a focus group. The discussion was useful in the process. A last survey was made to see if the goal was achieved. The results showed that the newly developed graphic profile was a clear improvement compared to the current from the perspective of corporate identity. The goal of the thesis was achieved.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
Social media has become one of the marketing tools corporate organisations cannot ignore anymore. Organisations are forced to adjust, and in certain cases replace, traditional marketing methods. The reason why this study was undertaken was to determine the type of content successful corporate brands use on social media platforms to attract new customers and retain their existing brand communities. The South African top ten most valuable brands of 2013, identified by Brand Finance, was the focus of the study and their social media activity was monitored over a pre-determined period on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. The analysis results indicated that the majority of brands use promotional content to strengthen their brand, followed by competitions and informative and educational content. Interesting findings included that each brand, within a specific industry, followed a specific online strategy. Among other brands, four banks were analysed namely Standard Bank, Absa, Nedbank and FNB. It was clear that Standard Bank and FNB focused on promoting their products and services. The focus of Absa’s strategy was helping customers to save money effectively. Nedbank placed major emphasis on the community and corporate social responsibility.

Title: Creating high awareness – A study in how a company can create awareness with cost efficient marketing methods.

Authors: Alexander Edlund and Fredrik Hansson

Aim: Our aim is to reveal the pros and cons of cost efficient marketing and decide which cost efficient method works best in creating awareness. We also want to determine if the methods can be integrated in a successful way to achieve greater awareness.

Method/Material: We have made a qualitative approach by conducting three in depth interviews with the company Bluetooth SIG’s marketing director Anders Edlund. Our theoretical foundation is mainly built on theory from the databases and library supported by Uppsala University.

Main results: We discovered that co-branding and PR are the two most cost efficient methods in creating awareness for the company Bluetooth SIG. We also found the possibility of integrating the methods in a way that effectively strengthens and reinforces the awareness. We recommend future research in both areas to further examine our results.

Abstract:
Social media is today described as a new marketing platform with a series of different communication channels. Something that is especially unique for this platform is the power that has been given to the consumers based on the fact that a great part of the communication takes place through them. This gives the companies who are going to market themselves a totally different role and a difficulty arises in how to adapt their brand after these new channels. The study therefore aims to provide guidelines for how a B2B company can market themselves and their brand in social media channels and how the choice of these channels affects the company’s brand. Marketing, B2B, branding and social media are the four main areas forming this essay, and together they create the theoretical foundation of the work. The study has been made with a qualitative approach with interviews that seeks to provide answers on how a B2B company should work with marketing in social media to strengthen its brand. The study has also used a company named Elanders as a case. Elanders is a B2B company that currently does not market itself in social media but has expressed a desire to do so. The empirical data in the study has been developed by interviews and has then been divided into two parts. One that only address the company Elanders and another one that focus on the opinions of experts regarding marketing, social media and branding. The empirical data has then been analyzed by looking at the theory and the models of the study. As a result we now have answers regarding how a B2B company can strengthen its brand by using social media, but also what kind of traps a company should be aware of regarding the use of this type of marketing. Furthermore, the study give specific advice on which channels to use and how many that are considered appropriate in order to maintain the channels in a successful way. We have in this study also been able to see the relevance of formatting a clear strategy that is consistent with a B2B company’s goals and marketing and the importance to give someone the main responsibility for the channels. It is also beneficial for a B2B company to learn more about search engine optimization, to be aware of potential competition and to have a clear picture of how the customers use social media.

Abstract:
Employer Branding activities in the competitive labour market are becoming increasingly interactive rather than being a top-down exercise. Limited resources together with new technology is playing a role in this development. Little, but some research exists on Employee Advocacy or the voluntary promotion and defence of a brand by its employees. While some researchers suggest that strong Employer Brands fosters Employee Advocacy, there seem to be little empirical support or comprehensive models incorporating the supportive factors. Earlier studies have been primarily quantitative in nature, focusing on the corporate perspective. This research adds a qualitative angle with focus on the Employee Perspective. The purpose with this thesis is to explore how employees in companies with strong Employer Brands practice Employee Advocacy in a Social Media context, Because of the subjectivist and abductive approach, the method was qualitative in form of interviews with employees of different companies in the service sector as primary data together with secondary data. The findings indicate that Employee Advocacy, although largely driven by employee commitment, in practice seem to be a rather temporary phenomenon. The dominating intrinsic motives for Employee Advocacy does not seem to translate in a Social Media Context, where nature of expression ultimately seem to depend more on external or situational factors. The limitations of this study are the small number of respondents made up of a convenience sample. The narrow theoretical base also limits the study to explore and broaden a phenomenon rather than developing an entirely new concept. The conceptual model could act as a basis for other studies with a combined qualitative/quantitative approach or as a basis for discussion in companies formulating their Employer Branding or Social Media strategies. The original value of the conducted study is a comprehensive model of shapers and some new empirical insights regarding complexities of the Employee Advocacy phenomenon.

Abstract:
The concept of social media has grown rapidly in the last years. This can be attributed to the rate of adoption and the penetration of social media around the world. Currently, there is an estimate of over two billion people that are actively using social media. The increased usage of social media has changed the way people interact and communicate. Literature suggests that Internet-enabled social networks (relationship between or among individuals and groups) are developing faster than offline relationships. Previous studies have linked social media to the social network theories that define social relationships based on the actors, the ties that exist and the flow of resources among them. This is made possible by social networking sites and other Internet enabled services that allow friends to meet, connect and interact. Social media allow for individuals, groups or organisations to build their social network of friends and followers. It also facilitates the formation of communities with common interest. Social media facilitate the creation and exchange of content such as text messages, images, audio and video formats among individuals or communities that share a common interest or belong to the same social network. Social capital theorists suggest that the ties that exist in social interaction like on social media have the ability to create benefit for the actors in the networks. This provides the foundation to study the benefits that individuals and organisations can obtain from social media. The opportunity to target and communicate directly with the target market and potential customer qualifies social media as a valuable marketing tool and an important component of the integrated marketing communication. As a marketing communication tool, social media introduces a completely new paradigm into marketing communications. Therefore marketing professionals and academics are continuously seeking how to take advantage of social media for different industries. In the field of politics, the use of marketing concepts to engage voters and drive collective participation in political processes has become critical due to stiff competition. The use of social media for political campaigning and engagement could be beneficial, but politicians and political organisations are not taking full advantage of the concept. Previous studies show that organisations are aware of the opportunities that social media could provide for their organisations. However, they are reluctant because they are faced with the problems of lack of information on how to implement social media for business purposes. This treatise investigates the approach and critical success factors for the use of social media for political campaigning and engagement. To evaluate the conceptual framework that was suggested by this study based on the literature review and case studies, an empirical study was conducted among the members of the Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape. A survey was conducted among the members of the Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape using a questionnaire and 92 responses were received. The questionnaire measured the respondents’ social media usage, level of political engagement, perception on the use of social media for political engagement and the level of political activities on social media. Also, hypotheses were tested to examine the assumption that there might be an association between the respondents’ gender, population group and level of political activities on social media. The findings of this study indicate that a structured approach, a strong emphasis of engaging followers socially and micro-targeting are critical to effective implementation of social media for political campaigning and engagement. Other factors include the direct involvement of leadership, listening and encouragement of user generated contents. This study concludes that political organisations can use social media to establish multi-levelled social networks that provide access to their target audience and also reach potential audience through their friends. This social connectedness can then be translated into political social capital for campaign and engagement purposes.

Abstract:
The rise of the Internet results in new challenges and possibilities for companies’ marketingand brand building activities as a result of the high availability of information. Thetransparency on the Internet means that companies no longer have the same control of theirbrand communication, instead the power has shifted towards the consumers. This means thatconsumers play a role in the forming of a brand and how it is perceived. For small fashioncompanies with limited resources the Internet provide suitable tools, like facebook, web pagesand blogs, to spread their brand. The high visibility and the spread of information on theInternet can benefit small brands to achieve higher brand knowledge on a global scale. This study has an qualitative approach and aims to create an understanding of how smallfashion companies are using the Internet as a branding tool as well as mapping thepossibilities with the tools used. Three semi structured observation studies were conducted onthe companies’ websites and facebook. In addition, two semi-structured interviews werecarried out at two of the companies. The theoretical framework consists of traditional theorieson brand building and brands, as well as recent research about online branding. The result implies that the companies do not have a clear and defined plan of their brandbuilding activities on the Internet, which presumably depend upon the lack of recourses interms of staff, economy and time. The brands’ usage of the Internet enables a higher visibilityof the brands on a global level. The tools used on the Internet are company websites, facebook and collaboration with fashion bloggers. The different tools contribute in spreadingand building the fashion brands. The company websites mirror the fashion brands bycommunicating its values and identity through images, text and short videos. Collaborationwith influential fashion bloggers, especially with international ones, makes it possible for thebrand to get a higher brand knowledge as well as the brand’s message is being spread topotential consumers. As a result of the collaboration, the fashion bloggers becomesambassadors of the brand. The use of facebook makes it possible for the brands tocommunicate in real time with consumers and to build relationships with them. Facebook alsomakes it possible for the brands to understand their consumers better by being able to viewtheir “followers” profiles.
