Wang, Xuanxiao, and Xuanxiao Wang. "'Birth' And 'Death' Of The One Child Policy: The Social Influences Of The One Child Policy On Individuals In China." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/621972.

Full text
Abstract:
The one child policy is considered one of the most radical population policies in the last century. Although the policy was intended to control population growth, it also had social and economic consequences. Despite the national level influences of the policy, this thesis focuses on the influences of the one child policy on individuals in China. In order to collect individuals’ thoughts about the influence of the policy, I conducted 50 interviews in 2016 in China. All respondents are Chinese citizens and have been impacted by the policy in various ways. The interviews show that the one child policy has influenced Chinese people in different ways, on the national level. Individuals’ desire to have children, opinions about having siblings and the sex preference of children seem different among the younger generation born under this policy than for older Chinese.

Cestr, Ondřej. "Is China’s one-child policy becoming redundant?" Master's thesis, Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, 2015. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-194525.

Abstract:
Contemporary China is facing the threat of rapidly aging population. Increasing portion of the economically inactive part of the population is already putting a significant strain on the Chinese pension system. Health care and social security system are still underdeveloped and also unprepared for this trend. As an attempt to reduce this issue by revitalizing the low birth rate, Chinese one-child policy underwent a significant relaxation in 2007. The expected acceleration of the birth rate however did not occur. Using the panel data from 31 regions of China between the period 2001 and 2013, I have analyzed this issue. My thesis provides the evidence, that one-child policy is not the exclusive culprit behind the continued trend of below-replacement fertility levels. Socioeconomic environment in China underwent a rapid transformation during the past 37 years. One of the socioeconomic factors newly affecting the Chinese birth rate level is the wealth. This is manifested by the inverse relationship between the wealth and fertility and it is known as the demographic-economic paradox. This thesis proves the presence of this phenomenon across the regions of China. It also demonstrates that it could have at least partly counterweighted the effect, which one-child policy easing had on birth rate in 2007. Since the one-child policy has lost significant part of its normative power to other factors affecting the birth rate, I am arguing it is the sign, that one-child policy is slowly becoming redundant on its own.

Abstract:
China’s infamous One-Child policy taught us how far the CPC (Communist Party of China) is willing to go to ensure that critical political demands are met. The Party has been all about population control since a little after the mid-twentieth century and now, at a time when the political and social sentiment towards birth-control methods and abortions in western societies are radically changing and floating towards more conservative ideals, the fear that the anti-natalist State power in China might reverse to extreme pro-natalist policies may become a reality in a matter of a few years or a couple decades. This thesis will start by illustrating the phenomena that caused one of the most memorable and wide-scale “violation of sexual and reproductive rights” (as described by Amnesty International) to be put into effect: the One-Child Policy. While some still proclaim it was a necessary mean to reach the current state of booming economy and prosperity that China now enjoys, others are starting to question the need for such strict measures. After a brief historical dissertation on the subject, this paper is going to discuss the consequences that this policy had on today’s Chinese society and will further analyse what these could possibly entail for the future of the country and its citizens. Moreover, a translation analysis of some of the subtitles made for the documentary “One Child Nation” is going to be presented, along with the theory behind it. The aim of the thesis is to provide an insight into this delicate and intricate matter: the reasons it was implemented, how the Party decided to carry it out and what this means and will mean for China.

Gammons, Samantha. "Gender, Education and the One-Child Policy: The Lived Experiences of Young Chinese Women in Urban China." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/18354.

Full text
Abstract:
Many studies have interpreted the positive and negative consequences of China's One-Child Policy on Chinese women, but few have relied upon contribution from Chinese women and only children themselves. However, by valuing personal, lived experience, researchers may discourage the propagation of Western media stereotypes of what it means to be a young Chinese woman in urban China. The use of an intersectionality framework showcases how Chinese women's lived experiences must be framed more widely than a single aspect of their identity and that gender, educational experiences, family dynamic, and single child status (among other identity markers) form a more complex and holistic identity than any marker considered individually. This thesis argues that the intersectionality of lived experience makes it necessary to consider each individual's story as valuable and that commonalities and differences are both crucial to understanding how individual's lives intersect in the context of this complex birth policy

Implemented as one of the basic national polices of China since 1978, the one-child policy has brought both advantages and disadvantages to one-child families in urban China. This thesis explores the various consequences of current family planning practices in urban Dalian. It explains the ways in which the implementation of the policy has influenced urban one-child families' everyday life and how parents and single children handle the policy. Urban parents have accepted the state requirement for limited births and have adopted new child-rearing practices to raise their "only hope" in the changing socioeconomic context. Single children receive comprehensive parental attention and support and are widely considered as spoiled "little emperors/empresses". But at the same time they experience great pressure to perform with academic excellence in order to be capable to excel in the competition of the global market economy. Gender norms are in transition. Urban single daughters are empowered by the benefits brought by low fertility produced by the policy. As the first generation of single children grows up, their families are now confronted with the crucial issue of the "four-two-one" (four grandparents, two parents, one child) problem, which impacts the future of the one-child policy.

Hall, Andrew Thomas. "China's One Child Policy and Male Surplus as a Source of Demand for Sex Trafficking to China." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/146588.

Full text
Abstract:
The Chinese government cites the country's controversial One Child Policy as a key factor in China's economic rise over the last few decades. Lower birth rates, they argue, correlate to more rapid development. However, in a society with a deeply-rooted preference for sons, the policy has caused an unforeseen uptake in female infanticide and feticide, translating to a drastic imbalance in sex ratios in Chinese demography, particularly among under-20 Chinese. With some 40 million men unable to find wives by 2020, China faces an unprecedented demographic problem. One of the most devastating effects of the One Child Policy and sex ratio imbalance is a sharp uptake in demand for sex trafficking to China, particularly forced prostitution and trafficking for marriage. More sex trafficking in China may spell disaster not only for hundreds of thousands of women and girls trafficked for sex, but also for Chinese society at large--sex trafficking accelerates the spread of HIV and compromises national security as borders become more porous and organized crime becomes more ubiquitous. The Chinese government, the US government, inter-governmental organizations like the UN and ASEAN, and non-governmental organizations each have specific roles to play in curbing the flow of sex trafficking in China.

Chang, Chiung-Fang. "Fertility patterns among the minority populations of China: A multilevel analysis." Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/1186.

Full text
Abstract:
Sociological and demographic analyses of minority fertility in the United States have suggested that the processes of socioeconomic, cultural, marital, and structural assimilation will lead to convergence in fertility. So far, little research has used the assimilation approach to study the fertility of the minority populations of China, and also, no research has taken both individual-level and group-level characteristics as predictors. Using micro-data from the One Percent 1990 Census of China, this dissertation performs multilevel analyses, hierarchical generalized linear modeling, to examine the effects of assimilation and the one-child policy at both the individual level and the group level on minority women's fertility. Several patterns are found in the multilevel analyses. First, the contextual characteristics of minority groups have strong correlations with fertility across thirty major minority groups in China. It suggests that community power and subculture have strong influences on women's decisions regarding their number of children. Second, the effect of the one-child policy is positive and highly significant on minority women's fertility. However, the strong policy effect does not cover the effect of assimilation. After controlling for policy, the impact of all the assimilation predictors, at both the individual and group level, still remains statistically significant. At the individual level, minority women's educational level, occupational status, status of intermarriage, and migration status have significant and positive impacts on their fertility. At the group level, the levels of minority groups' residential segregation, educational segregation, illiteracy, intermarriage rate, and their Moslem group culture have significant and negative impacts on individual women's fertility. Third, several cross-level interactions in the rural models are not consistent with the complete models, which suggests that some indirect effects of assimilation on minority fertility may come from the urban minorities. Finally, in addition to the direct impacts of socioeconomic, marital, and cultural assimilation on minority fertility, several cross-level interactions are significant and indirectly affect women's fertility. Findings reported in this dissertation indicate a successful integration of individual and contextual variables in analyses of minority fertility. The results contribute to the understanding of the assimilation impacts on minority fertility in China.

Yau, Emily. "The Importance of Rising ‘Non-Resistance’ to China's Biopolitically Strategic One Child Policy: Culturally Productive Discourses of ‘Little Emperors’ and ‘Rural Others’." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2013. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/255.

Abstract:
Thirty years after its initial implementation, China’s one child per family policy has been undeniably successful statistically speaking. Over 400 million births can be estimated to have been prevented, and the birth rate per family has lowered from 2.47 in 1979 at its implementation, to 1.6 most recently in 2010. These numbers cannot be ignored. However, attributing this success to the policy restrictions alone would be viewing it outside of the context of a thirty year evolution of substantial social, political, cultural, and economic changes which have completely changed the face of China. This paper examines the far reaching effects of the one child policy as it is informed by Foucauldian post structuralist theory which defines power as productive, and re conceptualizes the policy as that which is a crucial manifestation of rising biopolitically strategic forms of governmentality which enhance nations through the subjugation, enhancement and creation of the bodies of their subjects. Critical to China’s case is rising ‘non-resistant’ behaviors and attitudes which not only comply with, but actively agree with the one child policy limitations once considered abhorrent. This paper complicates the logic behind the rise of these ‘non-resistant’ attitudes, by suggesting that they are evidence to the fact that this ‘modern’ Chinese subject is the productive outcome of several discourses which proliferated in the last thirty years during the juxtaposed implementation of both economic reforms and family planning limitations. This paper chronicles two of the productive discourses involved in the making of this newly emergent ‘modern’ Chinese subject: the culturally productive discourse involved in the care and feeding of ‘little emperors‘ and the socially exclusive discourse with paints the rural population as internal ‘rural others’.

Abstract:
Apart from rapid economic growth, China has also experienced significant demographic changes over the past few decades. The People's Republic of China's family planning policies led to a sharp drop in the fertility rate. This MS Thesis aims to assess the possible consequences of the family planning policies on future growth of Chinese economy. The theoretical part defines population policy, assess the connections between population growth and economic growth and deals with the development of population theory over the years. The analytical part describes the family planning policy in China, its principles and instruments. Next it identifies the possible consequences of the demographic changes caused by the drop in fertility rate. The last part of the thesis focuses on two economically most severe consequences - population ageing and shrinking working age population - and evaluates its implications on future growth of Chinese economy.

Abstract:
This study explores the changing nature of filial piety in contemporary society in rural China. With the economic, social and political upheavals that followed the Revolution, can 'great peace under heaven' still be found for the rural Chinese family as in the traditional Confucian proverb,"make yourself useful, look after your family, look after your country, and all is peaceful under heaven"? This study explores this question, in terms not so much of financial prosperity, but of non-tangible cultural values of filial piety, changing familial and gender roles, and economic migration. In particular, it examines how macro level changes in economic, social and demographic policies have affected family life in rural China. The primary policies examined were collectivisation, the hukou registration system, marketization, and the One-Child policy. Ethnographic interviews reveal how migration has affected rural family structures beyond the usual quantifiable economic measures. Using the village of Meijia, Sichuan province, as a paradigmatic sample of family, where members have moved to work in the cities, leaving their children behind with the grandparents, the study demonstrates how migration and modernization are reshaping familial roles, changing filial expectations, reshuffling notions of care-taking, and transforming traditional views on the value of daughters and daughters-in-law. The study concludes that the choices families make around migration, child-rearing and elder-care cannot be fully explained by either an income diversification model or a survival model, but rather through notions of filial piety. Yet the concept of filial piety itself is changing, particularly in relation to gender and perceptions about the worth of daughters and the mother/ daughter-in-law relationship. Understanding these new family dynamics will be important for both policy planners and economic analysts.

The cultural face of modern China is constantly changing, whether through economic reforms, political campaigns, or social values. The ultimate inheritors and current carriers of this society in flux is the current post socialist, post 1989 youth generation. This paper examines the cultural changes that are occurring in China through six documentary films made in the 21st century that focus on youth and young adults as the representatives of the issues that the directors explore. In two films, the issue of the Single Child Policy will be examined in terms of the social repercussions the policy has created for modern youth, including gender, ethnic, and class inequalities. In the next two films, the economic conditions that have produced millions of migrant examined as it relates to the changing family values in much of China. The last two films explore the consumer culture of today’s modern youth, and how this culture impacts the expressive output of this generation. I conclude through these films that although the youth of today have been irrevocably shaped by these, and other, cultural changes that have occurred during their lifetime, they are still most fundamentally influenced by the traditional values of Chinese culture including relationships, family, and collective expression

Monnet, Rodolphe. "La politique extérieure de l'Inde en Afrique." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018USPCB025.

Full text
Abstract:
Since 2001 and the reshuffling of the balance of power, India has become one of the influential actors in an increasingly multipolar international context. The current groundswells are reshuffling powers between Nations in shaping new alliances and new power games. India is, more than ever, involved in this trend since the current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, came to power in 2014. He conducts an ambitious foreign policy as a means to make his country a global and respected power. The context of the issue detailed in this document is: to what extent does Africa's place in India's foreign policy enables India to reach this status of power? This thesis investigates the following three themes: Firstly, the Indian Ocean's place in the Indo-African relationship should reflect Africa's role in India's will to make the Indian Ocean region a peaceful and secured space in which India is a decisive player in front of powerful and heterogeneous political actors. Secondly, this thesis focuses on assessing Africa's role in India's initiatives to be an influential player on politics on the international agenda through international bodies, its bilateral relations with African states and the Indian diaspora settled down in these countries. Thirdly, India's search for that particular status goes through the economic area and the assessment of India's economic footprint in Africa to better establish its influence on that Continent. This study tries to shed the light on India's foreign policy while the United States are reassessing their involvement in the Indian Ocean, and while China is setting up its "One Belt, One Road" and India and Japan have just come together to propose a new partnership to Africa

This article focuses on “One China”, analysis China''s Taiwan policy during the ruling of DPP party during 2004 – 2008. The discussion focused on the following: 1)One-China’s historical background, origin, content, evolution. Especially for the implementation of policies, Beijing has consistently stressed on “International One -China”, “Political One -China”, “Economic One -China”, and “National One-China ” 2) One-China’s understanding and perception to foreign countries including the United States and Japan 3) The changing process of cross-strait relation policy. Policy content and evolution of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Finally, 5)Examine the impact of the CCP ''s policy on Taiwan and the internal and external environmental factors at the present stage . The effect of CCP to Taiwan policy has many factors, i. e. , international factors and Taiwan,China factors. Policy makers and decision-making unit played an important role in this studies. After considering such factors, the CCP’s policies to Taiwan in the legal level are “Anti-Secession Law” and “Peaceful Unification and One-China Two Systems” under the One-China principle. With this end of view, the CCP made an attempt at “ International One-China&;quot;, “Political One-China &;quot;, “Economic One-China &;quot;, and “National One-China ”. In contrast, Democratic Progress Party’s policy contradicted the CCP’s claims that Taiwan is a part of China. The DPP would like to have had a “ One-China, One-Taiwan” direction as soon as possible. U.S. of the cross-strait policy is based on ”three Communique and Taiwan relation Act”. U.S. officially supports “Taiwan is a part of China”, but the U.S. and Taiwan have maintained close relationship as in the Taiwan relation Act. Therefore, during the second term of the DPP, the CCP would like to expand mutual intersection between Mainland China and Taiwan. In the One-China principle, the CCP stressed on “International One-China”, “Political One-China”, “Economic One-China”, and “National One-China”. In the contrast, the DPP has tried to promote the expansion in international participation space. Taiwan had tried to attempt to join United Nations under a name of Taiwan of itself. To oppose strongly the “Political One-China”, Taiwan emphasized“92-spirit&;quot;, “siyaoyimeiyou”, and “normal country resolution ”. To against the “Economical One-China ”, Taiwan has tried to go through the WTO in order to connect to the world. To contradict the “National One-China”, Taiwan has pushed ahead with de-Sinicization.

The utilization of information isn''t simply a matter of national security, it is essentially a way to gain global importance and significance in the international community as well. In future warfares, those who hold dominance over crucial pieces of information and technology gain significant leads, that is, they obtain invaluable information concerning both the enemy and themselves, which in turn grants them an effortless victory. With that in mind, even a single word could decide the fate of a nation; every individual holds responsibility for their own country, regardless of their occupations or social rankings. This leads to the emergence of political communication, which aims to construct a beneficial environment in the world of politics, with the target not being economics or military arms, but rather the abstract forms of communication. By combining these forms of communication with the current political standards, and utilizing economic or military forces, nations can create political trends serving in their favor, stabilizing their place on the international stage. This study provides insights on this particular subject through studies of past documents, and mainly applies methods including the “Theory of Agenda Setting”, the “5 W model” brought up by Harold Lasswell in his essay on communication and social structures, and the Liberation Army’s interpretation of the three warfares (media, psychological and legal). Initially observing the early stages of struggles between PROC and ROC(Taiwan), it further focuses on the measures taken by political leaders on both sides after 1949, exploring the impacts of their communication strategies on the international community. The study has provided three main results: 1.The measures that opposing governments have implemented during the three warfares due to the “One-China Policy”, such as aligning themselves with other nations. 2. The incredible breakthroughs that Taiwan has made in upgrading its tactics of political communication over the years. 3. The Chinese government’s success in twisting its image and resolving conflicts through implementations of political communication. Scholars have also come up with four pieces of advice for relevant units: 1. The quantity and contents of the information used to build positive images of a nation should be handled more carefully. 2. The non-violent rise of the PROC government should be included in political communication. 3. Communication measures that relate closely to civil and social pulse should be examined and absorbed. 4. Utilizing modern types of media could impact societies widely. Keyword: Public Opinion Warfare, One China Policy,1949, both sides of the straits

The future of international trades and investments between Asia and Europe could rely heavily on China’s “One Belt, One Road Initiative”, owing to this policy will induce massive investment in and development of trade routes in the region. For realizing the part of this initiative about “One Road”, China government has developed the “China Railway Express” which has connected 15 cities in 10 European countries. In the beginning of 2018, there are around 40 service lines running through Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and Northeast border crossings to the key cities in Central Asia, Russia, Central and Eastern Europe and Western Europe. In 2016, there were 1,702 trains that had made the trans-continental voyage between China and Europe. The “China Railway Express” has begun to replace uncoordinated individual cargo lines with the fewer travelling days than the marine delivery and much lower fare than the air-cargo. “China Railway Express” will facilitate global cross-sector collaboration via the flows of global investment, resources, technology and skilled personnel. Thus, this study has adopted the expected effectiveness of “China Railway Express” to coordinate the resources (tangible and intangible) for achieving the Greenfield investment opportunities in the transportation hubs of the “China Railway Express” in the mainland China. There are two objectives of this study; the first is to build the screen system for selecting adequate transportation hubs for FDI (greenfield investment) investors, the second is to construct the business model for the government of these transportation hubs for attracting the FDI investors to generate the synergy for the public and private sectors.

Abstract:
This paper attempts to explore China's direct investment in Central Europe under the OBOR initiative. China's economic cooperation in Central Europe is short and the total amount is small. First, this paper analyzes the current situation of Chinese investment including scales, industrial structure, investment entities. Second, through data integration, this paper analyzes the competitive advantage of China's investment in Central Europe. Finally, this paper explores the motives of Chinese investment through the panel data model. The results show that the market size, technology level, resources and other factors of the Central European countries can attract Chinese investment. At the same time, the local environment, economic stability and other factors do not affect China's investment in infrastructure construction. China has laid the foundation for its economic and trade cooperation with Central Europe and is also a strategic choice between China and the United States. Lee, Gigi Nga Chi. "Family values and the one-child policy: attitudes of affluent urban China daughters." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/229.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the one-child policy as viewed by the present generation of single daughters who grew up in urban China, and the extent to which this policy has affected their family values. Through snowball sampling methods, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 unmarried only-child daughters from urban China now studying in Victoria and Vancouver. For purposes of comparison, 11 unmarried only-child daughters of the same generation were also interviewed in Hong Kong during the same time period. The findings revealed that some only-child daughters from urban China experienced low dissemination and enforcement of the one-child policy and expressed noncompliance and dissatisfaction towards the policy. A comparison between the China and Hong Kong samples indicates that the one-child policy has limited effect on the family values of the only-child daughters in urban China. By exploring the concept of governmentality, the demographic transition theory, and the concept of resistance, this thesis aims to address the dynamics between action of state power and the reaction of only-child daughters from urban China born under the one-child policy.

U.S. one-China policy has great influence on U.S-China-Taiwan trilateral relation for a long time. The three Communiqués, Taiwan Relation Act, Six Assurance to Taipei and Three Noes are the main elements of the one-China policy, while the ambiguity of one China policy gives U.S. government huge elasticity dealing with U.S.-China relation, as a result, the one-China policy can vary according to the time. By analyzing the international structure this essay uses the structure realism to study the variety of one China policy. According to the international structure, there are three phases from 1992 to 2017: first the U.S. unipolar 1992 to 2000, second from unipolar to multipolar 2001 to 2010, and third the bipolar in East Asia 2011 to 2017, the one-China policy changed according to the distinct phases of international structure. In the first phase, the one-China policy can always go with U.S. interest. In the second phase, the one-China policy must take more consideration of what China concern. In the last phase, the one-China policy has become the tool of offshore balancing, buck-passing or even the bargaining chips of U.S. As a consequence the international structure deeply affects the variety of one China-policy, and using the structure realism can clearly predict and analyze the development of the one-China policy in future.

"Transboundary environmental cooperation under the "one country, two systems" framework in the Greater Pearl River Delta, China." Thesis, 2008. http://library.cuhk.edu.hk/record=b6074533.

Full text
Abstract:
Drawing from an extensive literature review and international experiences, it is found that TEC is a dynamic process of environmental governance to manage environmental conflicts and achieve mutually agreed goals. It is also a political process involving complex mechanisms, processes, relationships and institutions in which stakeholders can articulate their interests, exercise their rights and obligations, and mediate their differences. Transforming theory into a pragmatic research holism, this study constructs an analytical framework which stresses the great importance of a few key aspects of TEC. These key aspects include the nature and characteristics of environmental issue of concern, sociopolitical situations where TEC appears, co-operation regime, determinants of cooperation formation and persistence, and elements of environmental governance. In this study, knowledge, interests and power are identified as the three key determinants and the eight elements involved are participation, compatibility, benefit to all participants, communication, transparency, adaptability, certainty, and expertise.
In order to critically examine the involvement of stakeholders, processes, and mechanisms of TEC in GPRD, a case study approach was employed. An in-depth analysis of two milestone cases, i.e., regional air quality management and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, illustrates how TEC plays a vital role in managing the environmental challenges resulting from economic growth, building of infrastructure and disparity in the level of regional development. Findings of the case studies reveal that joint efforts of the various jurisdictions have significantly promoted the regional environmental governance over the past two decades. There are mechanisms for knowledge building and conflict resolution. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of TEC needs to be further improved because several key elements are still not in place, including mutually agreed goals, effective negotiation among government bodies at different levels, symmetric distribution of benefits as perceived by the parties involved, and transparency as a result of free flow of information. The findings of this study also show that the absence or inadequacy of these key elements is deeply rooted in the "One Country, Two Systems" framework under which differences between both sides exist in political culture, mindset, environmental regulations and standards, as well as conflicting interests and priorities. These differences coupled with complex administrative hierarchy and pro-economic growth ethos point to a long drawn-out battle for consensus building and regional collaboration.
This study aims to conceptualize transboundary environmental cooperation (TEC) and examine how TEC helps solve environmental problems in the Greater Pearl River Delta region (GPRD) where the unique "One Country, Two Systems" framework is in place. With two different socio-political systems under the Chinese Government, the GPRD region has witnessed rapid economic growth driven mainly by industrialization and urbanization over the past two decades and has experienced a variety of environmental problems. By conducting a critical analysis of environmental governance in the region, the study offers unique insights into the environmental management problems in the Chinese context and hence the research findings are useful for devising alternative ways for more effective management of the environment.

This thesis aims to explore the impact of China''s strategy of “One Belt and One Road" on Taiwan''s development, which development and implementation are shaped by its domestic factor and international factors meaning economic globalization and regional integration. In order to make China as major economic power of export, the tactics to put “One Belt and One Road" into practice is via the “Economic Belt of Silk Road" and “Maritime Silk Road “connecting the countries along the Road. As the world second largest economy China has influence on Eurasian continent, and will have the power to lead world economic and global governance in the near future. Taiwan''s challenge in regional economic cooperation is increasing accordingly. In order to address the challenge,Taiwan''s government and industries should increase the chance of trade transfer and creation.

It has been 60 years since the civil war that divided China into two separate political system. Divided by the Taiwan Strait, R.O.C (Taiwan) and P.R.C (mainland China) set on the different side of the Strait, practicing different political rules. Both sides use every means necessary, be it politic, military, or diplomacy, in attempt to eliminate the opposing side, achieve the ultimate goal of unification, and become the only “China” that is nationally recognized. During the entire P.R.C history, from the early stage of Mao Zedong’s plan the “liberate” Taiwan by military power, to later on, Mao’s new plan to achieve the same goal through peace talks, which served as the building block to his successor, Deng Xiaoping’s “One Nation, Two System” policy, to Jiang Zemin’s effort to reinforce the propagation of the same policy, which occurred in the same time period as China reclaims of Hong Kong and Macau, and used them as models of the “One Nation, Two System” policy, P.R.C’s political policy toward Taiwan includes never admitting Taiwan as a separate political body, and never give up the option of “military liberation” of Taiwan. On the surface, P.R.C pretends to value the opinion of Taiwanese people, showing good faith toward a peaceful unification, when in reality, they are steadfastly executing its original plan to use their vast economic and military power to force Taiwan into submission. The fourth generation leader, Hu Jintao, becomes the new Chairman in 2002. The essence of his policy is essentially the same as his predecessors, although his political operation is modified due to the global diplomatic situation. Through the modifications bred his own, unique series of rules toward Taiwan diplomacy, where P.R.C’s stance becomes very flexible, and is able to play both hard and soft tactics. The stance has not changed even though Taiwan’s KMT came back into power and shows lots of good faith which built to unprecedented economic interaction from both sides of the Strait. Although Hu identified peaceful solutions as the new aim toward Taiwan diplomacy in the 17th CPC National Congress, it can be seen from his 「Hu’s Four Principles」、「May 17TH Announcement」、「Anti-Separation Law」 to his latest「Hu’s Six Principles」, that the “One China” principle has not been compromised. As the Taiwan citizens becomes more and more aware of their national identity, how to gain any breakthrough from two sides that held their political beliefs so firmly through 60 years becomes a point worthy of discussion. This paper will research the diplomatic policies toward Taiwan from different P.R.C leaders during different timeline, observe the constants and changes that occurred due to the change of numerous factors. From the first generation leader, Chairman Mao, to the fourth, Chairman Hu, the evolution of their stances, attitudes, executions of the policies will be thoroughly discussed and analyzed.

In 1949, the Republic of China government moved to Taiwan, and the People''s Republic of China was formally established. Since then, the governments of two sides of Taiwan strait started the competitive process of "one China". In order to maintain the orthodox position, Chiang Kai-Shek and Chiang Ching-Kuo firmly hold the "one China" position. After Lee Teng-Hui took over, he focused on the pursuit and establishment of the sovereign status of Taiwan, although did not clearly express that giving up the "one China" position, and set up National Unification Council to promote related policies in the presidential palace, but Lee also introduced the "one country, two governments", "one country, two entities (political entities) " and" one country, two districts" claims, and expressed that the relation between the two sides is "special state-to-state relations" (two-state theory). After the change of ruling party, ruled by Chen Shui-Bian, he positioned the "one China" as a topic which may discussed in the future and terminated the operation of National Unification Council, then put forward the "one country on each side" and "four yes one no" statements and to promoted referendum related to the issues, gradually forwarded toward the direction of Taiwan independence. 2008, the second change of ruling party occurred, Ma Ying-Jeou advocated to "recognize the ’1992 consensus’ and ’one China’ "as the basic of promoting the Mainland (China) Policy, and explaining the connotation of "one country, two zone" in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of China and Article 11 of the Constitution of the Republic of China Additional Articles; moreover, assisted by the senior staffs within the party, Ma made a substantial increase in the pace of development of cross-strait relations but set aside the sensitive political (unifying) issues. Comparing to the changes of Taipei, Beijing did not show significant change on the insistence of "one China", merely presents a gradual relaxation on the evolution of recognition of the status of Taiwan; furthermore, after Deng Xiao-Ping put forward the "one country, two systems" policy and delimited Taiwan as a Special administrative region, the policy orientation remained unanimous by Chinese leaders until today. The United States’ influence is the most important external factors. In the competitive process of Kuomintang and the Communists, the United States has always played an important role by various means. The feature of this article is studying the evolution of cross-strait relations within the core issue of "one China", carrying on a inter-temporal analysis through supplemented by changes in the economy, trade, military and other related events.

Purpose This thesis is to observe the problems of the policy of"one na tion, two systems" of China, from the processes of democratization and the est ablishment of democratic institution of Hongkong. Literature Review (1)of ficial publications of China, including PRC''s leaders'' words, paragraphs, re cords in political meetings and constitution,(2)official publications of Ho ngkong government, including political reform projects, China-U.K. agreements, (3)publications of the West, China,Taiwan and Hongkong, including the pape rs of the scholars of the West and the articles of the reserch units of Chin a, Taiwan and Hongkong. Methodology Three approaches have been used in th is thesis.(1)historical sociology and political culture, (2)comparative cont ents approach, especially the comparison of formal and informal documents, ( 3)the application of" triangle-relation" theory of China, U.K.and Hongkong. Contents There are four chapters in this thesis, introduction and concl usion besides. Chapter 2 is to introduce the theory of political democratiza tion and democratic concepts of Mainland China. Chapter 3 is to introduce th e policy of " one nation, two systems " of PRC. Chapter 4 is to explain the h istory of Hongkong democratization. Chapter 5 is to illustrate interactions and impacts of democratic concepts between China, U.K.and Hongkong. Results There are two conclusions. (1)The policy of " one nation, two systems " are not flexible for democracy. (2)The policy of " one nation, two systems " has the impacts on external forces. We find that democratization and inter nationalization are the weak points to PRC from the processes of Hongkong de mocratization. The authority of PRC are doubt by people by legitimation of P RC weakly; when the PRC government carries out policies, internationalizatio n make him change hard.

He, Wei. "Family Structure and Child Malnutrition in China: Three Essays." Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10161/7139.

Full text
Abstract:

Over the past three decades, the phenomenon of children's health in China has been marked by a co-existence of overweight and underweight. As the primary institution for a child, family is an opportune place for child malnutrition intervention. By advancing a framework that addresses the contextual factors which shape the heterogeneity of socioeconomic gradients of child overweight/obesity, this dissertation has sought to understand the channels through which access to family resources influences child overweight/obesity in China. Based on these developed understandings, I identified the mechanisms by which having any younger siblings and three generation living together or proximately affect child malnutrition in China. Using data drawn from China Health and Nutrition Survey, this dissertation uncovered remarkable differences in multiple levels of contextual factors that shape a child's risk of overweight/obesity and underweight in China as compared to Western society. China's stage of economic development together with the drastically increasing income inequality has created an ever-increasing socioeconomic gap in child overweight/obesity, especially after 1997. This finding confirmed the position of the Ecological System framework that access to obesogenic environment is much more important than willpower based on knowledge in shaping one's obesity-related risk behavior. Although the fertility level has been lowered by One Child Policy, resource dilution effect still affects girls' nutrition status, especially for those exposed to poverty and food insecurity. Children in the care of grandparents are healthier, probably due to the generally low degree of access to obesogenic foods and a closer intergenerational relationship that facilitates effective communication and promotes healthy lifestyle formation.

Population policy in China Abstract This thesis concerns the topic of population policy in China, focusing on the one-child policy. It describes the development of these policies and then deals with the research questions themselves. First of all the thesis describes the process of the fertility decrease in China in connection with the population policy since the 50s of the 20th century. This part of the thesis results in the findings that the largest fertility decrease occurred in the 70s of the 20th century as a consequence of the population policy measures. It was even before the implementation of the one-child policy in 1979, even though this also had a significant impact on the fertility. The one-child policy, amongst low fertility, has also brought some negative effects including accelerated demographic aging, increased sex ratio at birth, the phenomenon of "little emperors", more difficult situation for parents who lost their only child, etc. The thesis also compares the population policy of China and other Asian countries with similar trends in fertility. This part of the thesis results in the finding that similar fertility limitation can be handled by a milder way than it was in the case of China. Luo, Rui 21st century. "Senio co-housing design in China's suburban environment." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/25061.

Full text
Abstract:
The main design problem that I investigated is: How might senior co-housing in China’s suburban environment interact with culture, comfort and energy as a response to China’s aging issues? The topic will be explored into the following two parts: (1) The feasibility study of senior co-housing as a new housing type responding to China’s aging issues. (2) The prototype design of a senior co-housing community in China’s suburban environment--- a study on its interaction with culture, comfort and energy. China is currently experiencing a rapid demographic shift. In mid-January 2011, China’s National Bureau of Statistics announced that China now has roughly 185 million people over the age of 60, and this number will increase to 248 million by 2020 (Benjamin Shobert 2012). According to the data from the United Nations World Population Prospects at May 31, 2011, by the year 2030, more than 24.4% of China’s population will be over the age of 60, compared to the ratio of 25.3 in the U.S. The increasing aging population will make China one of the oldest countries in the world. While the aging issue is global, the specific context makes it unique in China. The “one-child policy” (officially translated as “family planning policy”), which restricts urban couples to only one child, has been carried out since 1979(“Family Planning in China” 2013), and dramatically changed the family structure in China. In the beginning of last 90s, every 1 elderly in China was supported by 10 adult children. For now, assuming the fact that the “one-child” policy is not quite functioning in most rural areas, the ratio becomes 1 to 3. This means the traditional family size is shrinking, and the function of the family is weakening. Meanwhile, the massive migration among the youth generation in China has made this situation even worse--lots of elderly parents and grandparents stay geographically distant from their children, which means the traditional cross-generational housing model will no longer be an option. Since their single child is unable to care for them, the current age 50+ generation that has been affected by the ‘one-child policy’ would face a lack of resources and necessities. Based on the facts stated above, a discourse arises in recent years: What is the housing option that meets the needs of the current 50+ generation, considering China’s context-specific constraints? Starting with the interest of answering those questions, the whole study consists of two parts: Firstly, by studying China’s context-specific constraints, proposing an alternative housing type; secondly, conducting a prototype design of this particular housing type by further exploring the design problem. The first part has been done by the author through an independent study during the Fall 2013 semester, in which the author discussed the importance and feasibility of applying senior co-housing in China’s suburban environment as a solution to China’s aging issues. In the Master Study Design, the author will combine the knowledge/ findings from the independent study with design strategies. Chosen a senior co-housing community with 15 occupants in a selected suburban environment as the study object, the author hopes to find a design solution by proposing a scheme that interacts with culture, comfort and energy.

The China’s Taiwan policy must be regulated in different international environment and politics factor, but the policy is formulated in careful process, not easy to have a mistakes. Although we can’t know the real process of policy formation in China, however, The spokesperson of the PRC is People’s Daily that could response the opinion and standpoint in China’s mass media, therefore, the People’s Daily is an object of this study. The project of the research is according to People’s Daily that takes the news about Taiwan as the principal thing including general news release, leading article and commentator article from 1996 to the 2002. Content Analysis will be adopted deeply analyze the news about Taiwan and we will use the soft of Statistics (SPSS) to computes the reference. The first step, the author will focus on what is People’s Daily characteristic, while it reports news about Taiwan For the purpose of the characteristic to comprehends the reaction of People’s Daily, when the special incident was happened in the Taiwan Straits. The second, the author will conclude certain of index which is be related to China’s Taiwan policy. to design the coding sheets. Therefore, we will analyze the news release according to the coding sheets. In accordance with particular period whether is different outcome or not. In order to understand the relation among People’s Daily reports about Taiwan, China’s Taiwan policy and Taiwan Straits special incident.Through previous published articles, interviews and analyses, this study draws four conclusions as follows 1. There are significant relation and interaction between the Taiwan reports of People’s Daily and China’s Taiwan policy. Then, it has distinct expression from the effects of different time and specified incidents . 2. On the other words, the relationship is like impulse and reaction. The organized system for Taiwan of China is major in Central Leading Group for Taiwan Affairs, the position of the other organization, in the effects of the different time and special incident, their position is dissimilar, for example: Taiwan Affairs Offices of the State Council and The Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits etc…Then, The Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits) and The departments of the State Council are obvious in division of labor. 3. The main shaft of China’s Taiwan policy is the One China policy and the implication is more and more elasticity, but the part of economics and Cross-Strait Exchanges is just additional device for the Construction of PRC’s Unification. 4. In case study, the special State-to-State is important than One Country on Each side for China. Then, the degree of the Words and Military Threats is the same.
