Full textThe subduction zones can generate powerful earthquakes that cause devastating tsunamis. The Lesser Antilles subduction zone remains very poorly known in this regard, and its historical earthquake catalog is very short. The only way to assess a return time for this hazard is to study the geological record. The region is also impacted by strong hurricanes. Both tsunami and hurricanes generate marine floods recorded by sediments. In this study, about 5000 year-long sedimentary records of tsunamis and hurricanes from coastal lagoons of four Lesser Antilles islands (Scrub, Barbuda, Anguilla and Guadeloupe) are studied. Sedimentological, geochemical, micropaleontological, radiocarbon and short-lived radioelements analyses are conducted. Two sediment records of major tsunamis were identified: the Lisbon tele-tsunami of 1755, and a historically unknown 15th century pre-Columbian tsunami. The sediment record of this pre-Columbian tsunami indicates a large marine flood and a huge tsunami that was likely generated by a high-magnitude earthquake, related to the subduction below the Lesser Antilles Arc. The consequences of such events along the New Aquitaine Coast would be moderate, with maximum wave height of 1 m. The high number of hurricane sediment records allowed to show increase or decrease phases in their number, that were related to past climate variations. The sediment record of Hurricane Irma (2017) in the Barbuda lagoon showed that this event was unique in terms of intensity, at the scale of the last 4000 years. Such an unprecedented intensity may be related to present-day climate change. Finally, the analysis of the sedimentary fabric of the deposits via X-ray tomography was successful for finding differences between tsunami and hurricane deposits

Full textIn this Ph.D. Dissertation we study the storm guarantee dedicated to the damage caused by the wind and a development of the behavioral insurance through the automobile risk. We associate external information like the wind speed to insurance data. We propose the construction of a storm index to complete and strengthen the evaluation of the damages caused by the major storms. Then we define a partition of the French territory in 6 zones storms, depending on extreme wind correlations to test several scenarios. These various tests and considerations allow us to improve our storm index. We lean on extreme value theory models to show the impact of the variability on the calculation of return periods and capital requirements. We underline the difficulties to obtain strong results in connection with the extreme events. Concerning car insurance, we test various methods to answer the technical and legal evolutions. We characterize the man/woman partition by using the logistic procedure, the multiple correspondence analysis or the classification trees. We show that it is possible to compensate for the absence of the sex variable with other information specific to the insurants or to their vehicle and in particular the use of kilometric data. Finally, we are interested in the acquired experience by young drivers. We study the behavior on the road of the insurants to create new classes of risks

Full textThe storm risk has a strong impact on forest management, directly through the damages a storm can cause and indirectly through induced precautionary behaviors. This PhD thesis addresses the issue of even-aged forest management with multiple age-classes in presence of a storm risk and when the producer has recursive preferences. Unlike expected utility preferences, recursive preferences distinguish between risk aversion and intertemporal preferences. An original analytical approach based on Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions, as well as a numerical stochastic dynamic programming approach are used to characterize stationary states and to clarify the role of determinants, in particular the role of preferences. In addition, the analysis is extended to the issues of land allocation and climate change. Results show that the storm risk combined with preferences leads forest producers to reduce the average rotation age out of precaution, as it permits to reduce the forest exposure and vulnerability. Moreover, land use diversification in favor of activities without risk and providing a regular income is shown to be another option to adapt to the storm risk. Finally, producers' expectations of an increase in the storm risk probability, which comes along climate change, are revealed as another source of precautionary behavior. In all the situations considered, risk aversion and intertemporal preferences are shown to have distinct roles, confirming that recursive preferences are relevant to deal with this type of issues

Full textIn Sénégal natural risks are one major preoccupation. With regard to the two last decades these phenomena have been increasing. They affect almost all the country, Dakar and its suburbs in particular. In summer times two major events, that are often concomitant, affect Rufisque. The diagnosis of natural phenomena goes through an inductive method is led by naturalist and historical approaches. The comprehension of the mechanism and the evolution of frequency/intensity of these risks are sustained by these works: (1) Making a list of past and recent events in which we can find the rainfall and sea-weather threshold from which the damage occurred ; (2) Identify the factors responsible for the uncertainties, taking into account predisposing factors , triggering factors , and aggravating factors ; (3) From morphological indicators, determining the areas which have been touched, which will give invaluable information on the rainfall routing and the velocities of flow ; (4) Making flood hazard maps and flood risk maps on the local level ; Explaining the mitigation measures, which could help to make decisions and develop a Flood Risk Prevention Plan and a Marine Submersion Risk Prevention Plan
