Abstract:
The analysis of the computational aspects of strategic situations is a basic field in Computer Sciences. Two main topics related to strategic games have been developed. First, introduction and analysis of a class of games (so called angel/daemon games) designed to asses web applications, have been considered. Second, the problem of isomorphism between strategic games has been analysed. Both parts have been separately considered. Angel-Daemon Games A service is a computational method that is made available for general use through a wide area network. The performance of web-services may fluctuate; at times of stress the performance of some services may be degraded (in extreme cases, to the point of failure). In this thesis uncertainty profiles and Angel-Daemon games are used to analyse servicebased behaviours in situations where probabilistic reasoning may not be appropriate. In such a game, an angel player acts on a bounded number of ¿angelic¿ services in a beneficial way while a daemon player acts on a bounded number of ¿daemonic¿ services in a negative way. Examples are used to illustrate how game theory can be used to analyse service-based scenarios in a realistic way that lies between over-optimism and over-pessimism. The resilience of an orchestration to service failure has been analysed - here angels and daemons are used to model services which can fail when placed under stress. The Nash equilibria of a corresponding Angel-Daemon game may be used to assign a ¿robustness¿ value to an orchestration. Finally, the complexity of equilibria problems for Angel-Daemon games has been analysed. It turns out that Angel-Daemon games are, at the best of our knowledge, the first natural example of zero-sum succinct games. The fact that deciding the existence of a pure Nash equilibrium or a dominant strategy for a given player is Sp 2-complete has been proven. Furthermore, computing the value of an Angel-Daemon game is EXP-complete. Thus, matching the already known complexity results of the corresponding problems for the generic families of succinctly represented games with exponential number of actions. Game Isomorphism The question of whether two multi-player strategic games are equivalent and the computational complexity of deciding such a property has been addressed. Three notions of isomorphisms, strong, weak and local have been considered. Each one of these isomorphisms preserves a different structure of the game. Strong isomorphism is defined to preserve the utility functions and Nash equilibria. Weak isomorphism preserves only the player preference relations and thus pure Nash equilibria. Local isomorphism preserves preferences defined only on ¿close¿ neighbourhood of strategy profiles. The problem of the computational complexity of game isomorphism, which depends on the level of succinctness of the description of the input games but it is independent of the isomorphism to consider, has been shown. Utilities in games can be given succinctly by Turing machines, boolean circuits or boolean formulas, or explicitly by tables. Actions can be given also explicitly or succinctly. When the games are given in general form, an explicit description of actions and a succinct description of utilities have been assumed. It is has been established that the game isomorphism problem for general form games is equivalent to the circuit isomorphism when utilities are described by Turing Machines; and to the boolean formula isomorphism problem when utilities are described by formulas. When the game is given in explicit form, it is has been proven that the game isomorphism problem is equivalent to the graph isomorphism problem. Finally, an equivalence classes of small games and their graphical representation have been also examined.

Cardoso, Filho Carlos Antonio. "Máquinas, mônadas, daemons : uma breve história e filosofia da máquina universal de Turing." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/147078.

Abstract:
The idea of "universal machine" was proposed by Alan Turing in 1936. The universal machine would be a machine able of computing and executing any computable machine, being taken as one abstract model of the computer. As a problem, we put the question about what can a universal machine do. We propose two ways to approach the creation of a thought about universal machines. The first mode will be developed through the construction of networks, in the sense given to them by the Actor-Network Theory. With the networks we will weave a historical narrative of the universal machine, in order to show that there is not a universal machine, but a multitude of machines, each linked and produced by certain groups that congregate the most diverse forces, alliances and disputes involving human and nohuman actors. This history will be made, first, in the context of logic and mathematics, and later in its relation to programming languages, software engineering and open source software. The second mode of thinking about universal machines will be made through folds, understood them as procedures by which time is folded, approaching problems, concepts and temporality. In the folds the universal machine will be problematized first in its relationship with the thought in the work of Turing, second, with the problem of interaction and its parallels with the open and closed monads and, thirdly, the relationship established with the subjectivity through the daemon figure and the concept of extended cognition.

West, David Reid. "Some cults of Greek goddesses and female daemons of oriental origin : especially in relation to the mythology of goddesses and demons in the Semitic world." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1990. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/1263/.

Full text
Abstract:
In Chapter One we discuss the evidence for Mycenaean trade and colonisation in the Orient, and for oriental trade and colonisation in the Aegean and Greece. We begin with such subjects as archaeological artefacts, artistic motifs and styles of architecture, then consider the linguistic evidence, such as toponyms, personal names and the LA tablets. The evidence for contact is overwhelming. In Chapter Two we consider the evidence for Semitic motifs in the iconography, mythology and names of Greek goddesses connected with nature. Thus Semitic influence is clear in the case of Artemis and Rhea as lion-goddesses, Britomartis as a `Mistress of the Beasts', Leto as a goddess of the sacred palm, and Demeter as a mare-goddess. Reha seems to be partly Anatolian. Chapter Three is concerned with the goddess Athena and other avian daemons. We begin (Section A) by discussing the oriental origins of Athena's owl, snake, aegis and Gorgon, relying mainly upon the evidence of iconography. Then (Section B) we consider three epithets of Athena which seem very Semitic. Finally (Section C) we discuss the sirens, which are avian demonesses somewhat reminiscent of Athena's chthonian character. In Chapter Four we first analyse (Section A) as much of the character of the goddess Hekate as possible, in both iconography and literature. It is clear that Hekate is a very demonic goddess. Then (Section B) we discuss various theories concerning the origin of Hekate. The Anatolian theories in particular are unconvincing. The Semitic origin of Hekate is tested (Section C) with reference to the character and motifs of both E-S and W-S demons and demonesses. It is concluded that Hekate is an evolute of Lamashtu. Finally (Section D) other Greek chthonian daemons (e.g. Mormo, Empousa, Gello) are compared with both Hekate and Lamashtu. Some (e.g. Mormo, Empousa) are Greek daemons with Semitic motifs in their characters. We conclude that Lamia is another evolute of Lamashtu, and that Gello is derived from the Mesopotamian Gallu demon.

Abstract:
Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) created multiple challenges for the mental health of soldiers who served there. The local facility in this study determined there was a gap in providing OEF/OIF veterans assistance with mental health issues. The practice-focused question explored whether a training module for nurses would assist in the identification of signs and symptoms of mental health issues in OEF/OIF veterans, such as posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, addictions, and suicidal/homicidal ideations, to help ensure timely referral for services. The project used Kolcaba's comfort theory as the basis for the training module. A pretest, training module, and posttest were created and administered to the expert panel. Results showed the training module contained information to assist nurses in identifying the signs and symptoms of mental health issues as well as educated the nurses on various interventions that were available for the veterans. It was determined by the expert panel that the training module should be implemented to assist in decreasing the gap in care for OEF/OIF veterans. This training module might support positive social change by empowering nurses to assist veterans with coping skills overcome mental health issues and lead positive and productive lives.

Abstract:

Hultberg, Niklas. "Operation Rolling Thunder." Thesis, Försvarshögskolan, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:fhs:diva-4096.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper provides an explanation of the concepts John A. Warden III describes regarding the use of air power and if this theory can be found, within the confines of an unconventional war. The U.S. ability to air power is overwhelming, however the right kind of warfare can force this great power to abandon their military and political objectives by exhausting its resources over time as it becomes increasingly costly, both economically, politically and morally, to wage war. The research deals with operation Rolling Thunder and John A. Warden IIIs theory in relation to this massive bombing campaign. Firstly, you will find an analysis of John. A. Warden III's works. Five concepts can be found: Airspace Control, center of gravity, air interdiction, the enemy as a system and parallel attack. Secondly, a content analysis of relevant literature in the context of a case study on Operation Rolling Thunder. Thirdly a comparative analysis between the two results with a subsequent discussion relating the main problem and an effort is made to determine the outcome of the investigation and if the purpose of this paper has been met. Within the implementation phases of Operation Rolling Thunder, it is possible to distinguish som of Wardens key concepts regarding air power utilization. Even though the four phases illustrate a continuous change in strategy, Wardens theory The Enemy as a system was never implemented.

Abstract:
Many offshore installations are dependent on power generated by gas turbines and a critical issue is that these experience performance deterioration over time. Performance deterioration causes reduced plant efficiency and power output as well as increased environmental emissions. It is therefore of highest importance to detect and control recoverable losses in order to reduce their effect. This thesis project was therefore initiated to evaluate parameters for detecting performance deterioration in addition to document different aspects of gas turbine degradation and performance recovery. Compressor fouling is the largest contributor to performance deterioration. Investigating fouling was therefore the main focus of this study. In the present study the deterioration rates of four different gas turbines were evaluated. When choosing gas turbines it was emphasised to select gas turbines operating under equal conditions but with different washing procedures. In addition to offline washing two of the gas turbines had daily online washing routines and one of the gas turbines run idle wash every 1000 hour between each offline wash. Data was extracted from the monitoring software, TurboWatch, and loaded into Excel files. MATLAB scripts were created to handle the large amount of data and visualize performance trends. Series of two parameters were plotted against each other and the graphs were evaluated. The evaluation showed that an overall trend was that the gas turbine that had been running with online washing continuously over a long period of time had higher performance than the reference engine. For the second gas turbine a daily online washing procedure has recently started. The advantage with the evaluation of this gas turbine was that a good reference engine was available. The two engines were operating under quite similar conditions at the same location in addition to having equal filter systems. Some deterioration trends were possible to detect. For the first period both engines seemed to have quite equal deterioration trends. During the second period no clear trends were seen in corrected CDP and corrected EGT when evaluated for constant GG speed. The compressor efficiency had decreasing trends for both engines during the second period as well, but the compressor efficiency for machine 1 was overall higher during the period with online washing than the previous period. The borescope pictures taken after the first period with online washing showed good visual results. However, it is too premature to make a final decision regarding the exact performance gain of online washing. At the time the study was performed the engine had only been running online washing for one operating interval, and more investigation over longer time is recommended. For the engine running with idle wash it was not possible to conclude on the basis of the collected data. No clear deterioration trends were detected and investigations over longer time and several operating intervals are recommended. It is also important to be aware of the fact that the performance gain of idle wash needs to be much higher than for online washing in order for idle wash to be economically profitable. There are several uncertainties related to performance trends. These include inaccuracy in instrumentation, monitoring software, calibration etc. Due to the fact that all the gas turbines evaluated in this study only have standard instrumentation it caused additional uncertainty in the performance trends. One suggestion for further study is to initiate a test instrumented gas turbine into operation with sensors for measuring inlet pressure depression

Abstract:
Integrated Operation is a strategy to operate the Energy MicroGrid as an integrated system. In this strategy, a CHP plant, an electric water heater, and thermal storage were operated to support both electricity and heat networks of the Energy MicroGrid. An Integrated Optimal Power Flow was formulated and was used to investigate the advantages of this Integrated Operation. Simulations indicated that Integrated Operation minimised generation curtailment and load shedding. It also reduced electricity imported from the main grid and the operating cost.

Boonyasana, Kwanruetai. "World electricity co-operation." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/27793.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis evaluates the effect of electricity co-operation regarding import and export on electricity prices for OECD countries and on CO2 emissions for the world. In addition, the study investigates which kinds of renewable energies provide the best economic future for Canada and the U.S. There are three main sections to the thesis. Firstly, panel data analysis determines the electricity price functions, using 29 OECD countries’ yearly data from 1980 to 2007. Membership of the European Union, used to investigate effect of high level co-operation on price, is seen to decrease household and industry prices, but is not significant for household price. The effect of electricity trading in OECD countries is not found to deliver cheaper electricity suggesting that these countries need to co-operate more closely to increase competition and improve efficiency in electricity markets. Secondly, panel data analysis determines parameters of the CO2 emissions function, using 131 countries’ yearly data from 1971 to 2007. The world results show that electricity co-operation is highly significant in decreasing CO2 emissions per unit of generation, thus supporting the hypothesis. At the continent level, Asia shows the highest CO2 decrease from electricity import, with the lowest decrease being for Africa. Electricity export for North America, Latin America and Europe is found to be highly significant in decreasing CO2 emissions. Finally, time series analysis of yearly data for Canada and the U.S. from 1978 to 2009 is used to determine the electricity price functions. For Canada, electricity import is found to be highly significant in decreasing household electricity price, but not so for the U.S. Renewable energies such as wind and hydro are seen to be the future of electricity generation for Canada, but the results for the U.S. indicate that no type of renewable energy can reduce electricity price.

Abstract:
The end of the Cold War meant fundamentally changed conditions for policymaking in security matters for most states. Before, the world was divided between two blocks with two ruling superpowers in a constant tug-of-war, whiles we today have another reality with many different alliances and asymmetric threats of different kinds. This security transformation have also affected the academic study of international relations and in particular during the 90th many scholars declared the victory of the liberal perspective over realism. This thesis is a case study of the European Unions first naval operation, EUNAVFOR – Operation Atalanta and in particular the Swedish participation in this operation. The purpose of the study is to look for the motives in the decisions on different levels, from the UN security council, to the EU council and the Swedish parliament, and to analyze those motives according to the to major perspectives in IR-studies.  The thesis show that truth lies somewhere in between this two opposing perspectives. Both viewpoints result in a number of assumptions and simplifications that lead to blind spots in the study. Not until the two perspectives are compared with each other the whole picture will emerge. Sweden’s participation in operation Atalanta can be explained both with strictly national motives and with a concept of shared responsibility within the international community.

Abstract:
Tutkimukseni tarkoitus oli selvittää, mitä Philip Pullmanin His Dark Materials -trilogian daimoni symboloi ja merkitsee päähenkilön Lyran individuaatio- eli yksilöitymisprosessin osana. Analyysini pohjalla käytin C. G. Jungin analyyttisen psykologian käsitteitä piilotajuinen, tietoinen, symboli ja arkkityyppi. Analyysini rakenne pohjautuu Sisko Ylimartimon tutkimuksessaan käyttämään jungilaiseen kolmivaiheeseen individuaatioprosessin tulkintamalliin. Sisko Ylimartimon väitöskirjatutkimus Lumikuningattaren valtakunta. H. C. Andersenin satu sisäisen kasvun kuvauksena (2002) on Jungin ajatuksen rinnalla perustelemassa omia tulkintojani, sillä Ylimartimo tutkii Andersenin sadussa tapahtuvaa yksilöitymisprosessia.

Letourneau, Brian. "Alcohol Misuse Among Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom Military Healthcare Professionals." Diss., NSUWorks, 2018. https://nsuworks.nova.edu/cps_stuetd/119.

Abstract:
Over 2.1 million United States military service members have deployed to support Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Nearly 40% of OEF/OIF service members meet criteria for an alcohol use disorder post-deployment. Minimal research has addressed alcohol misuse among military healthcare professionals despite the prevalence of alcohol abuse among civilian providers. This study explored whether military healthcare professionals involved with OIF/OEF operations have increased risk for alcohol misuse (i.e., problem drinking, heavy weekly drinking, heavy episodic drinking). Three evidence-based hypotheses were evaluated: (a) among OEF/OIF military personnel, healthcare professionals would have an increased likelihood of alcohol misuse compared to service members in other occupations; (b) personnel who screen positive for PTSD would be more likely to screen positive for alcohol misuse outcomes versus personnel who screen negative for PTSD; and (c) personnel with enlisted status would be more likely to endorse alcohol misuse compared to personnel with officer status. Participants were drawn from 81,247 military personnel enrolled in the Millennium Cohort Study, a prospective, longitudinal cohort study investigating health consequences of military service. Chi-square tests of independence identified significantly different demographic characteristics between participants in the first and second enrollment panels and resulted in participants being divided into subgroups based upon their enrollment panel and baseline alcohol use. Participants who had complete data at baseline and all follow-up waves were included in the primary multinomial logistic regression analyses used to identify variables associated with each alcohol use outcome over time. Results suggested that being a healthcare professional did not influence alcohol misuse outcomes. A positive screening for PTSD was associated with greater endorsement of alcohol misuse outcomes across most participant subgroups, and holding enlisted status was associated with problem drinking and heavy episodic drinking in some participant subgroups. Additional variables associated with alcohol misuse outcomes included being younger, male, using tobacco, and belonging to the National Guard/Reserve. The results of this study suggest that, while alcohol-related interventions may not need to be tailored to specific occupations, alcohol use screening and treatment should continue to be focused on at-risk groups to enhance troop health and functioning.

There is a debate on how air power should be employed to attain success in war and conflicts. Although scholars do not fully agree on the subject, there is a consensus that attacking the opponents military forces’, a course of action referred to as denial, can contribute to a positive outcome on the battlefield. This thesis investigates the utility of denial in air operations against regular and irregular opponents. The purpose of this study was to examine Robert Pape’s Denial Theory in a focused and structured comparative case study of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq. The investigation reveals that denial contributed to the ground offensives in both cases, specifically by providing air support in the theatre, which led to the collapse of Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq and drew the opponents out of several cities in Afghanistan. The use of operative interdiction made freedom of action possible and resulted in the final collapse of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. In conclusion the investigation shows that denial may be a suitable modus operandi against both regular and irregular opponents.

Abstract:

This thesis is an approach to improve a two-mode hybrid electric vehicle, which is currently under development by GM, with respect to fuel consumption. The study is not only restricted to the specific two-mode HEV but also presents results regarding parallel as well as serial HEV’s. GM whishes to verify if the online-based controller in the prototype vehicle utilizes the most of the HEV ability and if there is more potential to lower the fuel consumption. The purpose is that the results and conclusions from this work are to be implemented in the controller to further improve the vehicle’s performance. To analyze the behavior of the two-mode HEV and to see where improvements can be made, models of its driveline and components are developed with a focuson losses and efficiency. The models are implemented in MATLAB together with an optimization algorithm based on Dynamic Programming. The models are validated against data retrieved from the prototype vehicle and various cases with different inputs is set up and optimized over the NEDC cycle. Compensation for cold starts and NOx emissions are also implemented in the final model. Deliberate simplifications are made regarding the modeling of the power split’s functionality due to the limited amount of time available for this thesis. The optimizations show that there is potential to lower the fuel consumptionfor the two-mode HEV. The results are further analyzed and the behavior of the engine, motors/generators and battery are compared with recorded data from a prototype vehicle and summarized to a list of suggestions to improve fuel economy.

Abstract:
By reducing ships’ fuel consumption, shipowners can achieve lower operating costs while at the same time reducing their impact on the environment. This report is a study of different measures that can be taken in order to improve ships’ energy efficiency, and a study of how various engine parameters can be related to efficient running of the engine. Several measures have been assessed and related to a specific ship’s energy profile in order to find the fuel and diesel oil savings potential. The ship’s profile has been updated largely based on the different manufacturers’ own estimations of their product’s effect on fuel consumption. Engine data for a two-stroke diesel engine have been collected from a database and are presented compared to the overall efficiency of the engine. The parameters are presented with the goal of identifying which ones, if any, that most accurately indicate the condition of the engine in terms of efficiency.

Abstract:

The typical process modeling and control approach of dealingwith each manufacturing process stage in isolation is re-evaluated anda new approach is developed for the case of a series ofprocess stages and the case of several similar processesoperating in parallel at different sites. The serialmulti-stage modeling framework uses the possible correlationbetween stages as a tool to achieve tighter control of anonstationary process line. The case of several similarprocesses operating in parallel at different sites is termedglobal manufacturing. Global manufacturing allows updatedestimation of the sensitivity or slope parameters over thecourse of the process in some cases since the site effectcauses a spread in the range of the inputs. This spreadin the inputs provides an opportunity for stable sensistivityestimates without perturbing the process as is usuallynecessary. The Bayesian parallel site estimation procedure isshown to have broad application to any scenario where thedata is collected at various related but not identical sites.Specifically, uniformity modeling is explored using theBayesian estimation procedure. The multi-systems operation and controlmethodologies developed for the serial and global manufacturingcases provide valuable tools for the improvement ofmanufacturing processes in many industries.

Abstract:
With continuously increasing urbanization, consumer demands and expansion of water supply systems, determination of efficient pump schedules became a more difficult task. Pumping energy costs constitute a significant part of the operational cost of the water distribution networks. This study aims to provide an effective daily pump schedule by minimizing the energy costs for constant and also for multi tariff of electricity (3 Kademeli Elektrik Tarifesi) in water distribution network. A case study has been performed in an area covering N8.3 and N7 pressure zones which are parts of Ankara water distribution network. Both pressure zones consists of 3 multiple pumps in pump station and one tank having 5000 m3 storage volume each. By using genetic algorithm based software (WaterCAD Darwin Scheduler) least-cost pump scheduling and operation policy for each pump station has been determined while satisfying target hydraulic performance requirements such as minimum and maximum service pressures, final water level of storage tank and maximum velocity in pipeline. 32 different alternative scenarios have been created which include multi tariff energy prices, constant tariff energy price, insulated system condition, uninsulated system condition and different pump combinations. The existing base scenario and alternative scenarios which were prepared by using optimal pump schedules have been compared and the achievements of optimizing pump operation have been analyzed. At the end of the study, a satisfying result has been observed that by using determined optimal pump schedule, minimum % 14 of total energy cost can be saved in existing water supply system.

Abstract:
The task of this project was to investigate the near wake, performance characteristics and yaw moment on a model wind turbine. The test turbine is a horizontal axis three bladed machine with a rotor diameter of 0.9 meter. Initially it is an upwind turbine, but was used for downwind measurements as well by rotating the blades and the entire construction 180^0. For the wake measurements the tip speed ratio was set to be TSR=3, TSR=6 and TSR=9 to describe the different regimes; partly stalled, optimal operation and partly propeller operation. Two different yaw angles, 0^0 and 30^0, was also explored for the near wake measurements. The velocity field was measured at X/D=1, as well as X/D=4 for TSR=6 and the two yaw angles; X/D being the number of rotor diameters downstream from the rotor plane. The performance characteristics and yaw moment were measured for yaw angles 0^0, 10^0, 20^0 and 30^0, and with tip speed ratios from 1 to 11. The power and thrust coefficients were found to decrease with increasing yaw angle. This is due to the reduced projected rotor area and reduced effective wind velocity component interacting with the turbine blades. The loss in power due to the yaw angle of the turbine is approximately 6% for yawAngle=10^0 and 40% for yawAngle=30^0 with upstream configuration. For downstream setup the reduction in power due to the yaw angle was 5.2% and 38% for yawAngle=10^0 and yawAngle=30^0 respectively. The near wake velocity field was strongly influenced by tip speed ratio and yaw angle. At TSR=3 the outer parts of the wake had a velocity close to the freestream velocity. Therefore much of the flow passes through without interacting with the rotor blades. For TSR=6 the velocity deficit was close to uniform in the wake. Most of the turbine blades operate efficiently at the design condition, and gives the peak in the power coefficient curve at this TSR. When TSR=9 the inner part of the blades experience negative angle of attack and provide energy to the wind instead of subtracting it. The outer parts of the blade operate more efficiently, but due to the inner part working as a propeller the power coefficient is low. The thrust coefficient is high for this operating condition. When the turbine is operating in yawed condition, the wake width is reduced and shifted towards the yawed direction. At downstream distance X/D=4 for TSR=6 the wake deficit becomes more uniform for both yawAngle=0^0 and yawAngle=30^0. For the downstream configuration the yaw moment was generally stable at more operating conditions than the upstream setup. Common for both configurations was that the yaw moment tended to rotate the rotor plane out of the wind at low tip speed ratios and yaw angles. The downwind turbine got a stabilizing moment for a lower tip speed ratio than the upwind turbine for all yaw angles. Both upwind and downwind turbine setup had an unconditionally stable yaw moment for yawAngle=30^0.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines market design and operation within the empirical context of CO2 markets.Six case studies are presented which describe business interactions during the design and operation of the Kyoto Protocol, the European Emissions Trading Scheme and the United Kingdom's Carbon Reduction Commitment. The case studies were developed through participant observation between October 2006 and June 2010. The research developed a conceptual framework for the study of CO2 market design and operation. Network-level aspects of CO2 market design and operation were captured by exchange, representational and normalising practices. Macro-level aspects of CO2 market design and operation were captured by technical, temporal and uncertainty based considerations. The conceptual framework was used to analyse the six cases, exploring why CO2 markets have not yet significantly influenced businesses' behaviour. Ibis research should help businesses and regulators to' better understand the challenges faced during CO2 market design and operation. Market based approaches to environmental protection are receiving increasing interest in the marketing literature. The conceptual framework and six cases further the study of what is actually happening during CO2 market design and operation, as opposed to previous approaches which have emphasised the intricate theoretical aspects of CO2 market design.

Abstract:
As a service company performing subsea operations, DeepOcean wishes to operate in the widest range of sea conditions. The majority of all offshore operations are performed using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), where lifting through the splash zone is considered the most critical phase during launching and recovery of the ROV system. Available standards from DNV propose a systematic and analytical approach for estimating the hydrodynamic loads occurring in the splash zone. A maximum operational significant wave height, Hs, is determined using a proposed acceptance criteria. Experience from the industry have shown that the method is unreasonable conservative, consequently leading to a restrictive operational Hs window. The main objective of this master thesis is to compare results obtained from the analytical calculations with results obtained from the time domain simulation programs; Simulation of Marine Operations (SIMO) and OrcaFlex. The operational limit established in the time domain programs is based on the assumption that the maximum relative velocity between the crane tip and the waves represent a worst case scenario and that a slack lifting wire is not acceptable. This is due to the uncertainties associated with snap loading after a slack lifting wire. Three different ROV models have been established, two in OrcaFlex and one in SIMO. A sensitivity study regarding the hydrodynamic coefficients for the ROV models is also performed. The three different ROV models show different dependency of the added mass and drag term. The overall trend for the ROV systems is that the added mass dependency is reduced for the structures modelled with multiple elements, while the drag dependency is increased. The Simplified Method is certainly conservative compared to time domain simulations performed in SIMO and OrcaFlex. The present operational sea state of Hs = 4.5 m is rejected by the Simplified Method. If the operation is to be performed independent of a Tz value, an operational Hs of 0.75 m is acceptable according to the analytical calculations. From the time domain analyses in SIMO and OrcaFlex, the current operational sea state of Hs = 4.5 m could be justified if a limiting Tz is given. For launching this limiting value is 9 s, while for recovery of the ROV system the limiting Tz value is 8 s. The operational limit should not only be set by a Hs value, but also a Tz due to the large dependency of the wave period for lifting though the splash zone. Simulating the ROV lift operation in a time domain simulation program has proven to be a good alternative compared to the Simplified Method.

This thesis seeks to answer how leadership can unify the Norwegian Special Operation Forces and improve its organizational efficiency. From January 1, 2014, the two Norwegian special operations commands, Forsvarets Spesialkommando (FSK) and Marinejegerkommandoen (MJK), were joined in one service-like combatant command: Forsvarets Spesialstyrker (FS). FSK and MJK each have a long history, and their legacy and culture sit in their hearts. The two units are, in many ways, alike, but their differences have been highlighted when it comes to the future of the Norwegian Special Operation Forces. This thesis uses relevant literature, the authors’ personal experiences, and statistical analysis of precollected survey data to answer the research question. It offers an overview of the Norwegian Special Operation Forces’ history, maps the current organizational culture, and suggests a leadership approach to unify the two units and the newly established joint command staff in order to improve organizational efficiency. The aim is to provide recommendations to assist with the process of forging a highly capable Norwegian Special Operation Forces for the 21st century.

In this thesis, I argue that the obligatory nature of agreement in [phi]-features (henceforth, [phi]-agreement) cannot be captured by appealing to "derivational time-bombs"-elements of the initial representation that cannot be part of a well-formed, end-of-the-derivation structure, and which are eliminated by the application of [phi]-agreement itself (as in Chomsky's 2000, 2001 uninterpretable features approach, for example). Instead, it requires recourse to an operation- one whose invocation is obligatory, but whose successful culmination is not enforced by the grammar. I then discuss the implications of this conclusion for the analysis of defective intervention by dative nominals. These results lead to a novel view of the interaction of '-agreement with case, furnishing an argument that both '-agreement and so-called "morphological case" must be computed within the syntactic component of the grammar. Finally, I survey other domains where the same operations-based logic proves well-suited to model the empirical state of affairs; these include Object Shift, the Definiteness Effect, and long-distance wh-movement. The thesis examines data from the Kichean languages of the Mayan family (primarily from Kaqchikel), as well as from Basque, Icelandic, and French.

Abstract:

This thesis examines two problems concerning the secure and reliable operation of the electric power grid. The first part studies the distributed operation of the electric power grid using the power flow problem, which is vital to the operation of the grid. The power flow problem is a feasibility problem for finding an assignment of complex bus voltages that satisfies the power flow equations and is within operational and safety limits. For reliability and privacy reasons, it is desirable to solve the power flow problem in a distributed manner. Two novel distributed algorithms are presented for solving convex feasibility problems for networks based on the Method of Alternating Projections (MAP) and the Projected Consensus algorithm. These algorithms distribute computation among the nodes of the network and do not require any form of central coordination. The original problem is equivalently split into small local sub-problems, which are coordinated locally via a thin communication protocol. Although the power flow problem is non-convex, the new algorithms are demonstrated to be powerful heuristics using IEEE test beds. Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Programs (QCQP), which occur in the projection sub-problems, are studied and methods for solving them efficiently are developed. The second part addresses the robustness and resiliency of state estimation algorithms for cyber-physical systems. The operation of the electric power grid is modeled as a dynamical system that is supported by numerous feedback control mechanisms, which depend heavily on state estimation algorithms. The electric power grid is constantly under attack and, if left unchecked, these attacks may corrupt state estimates and lead to severe consequences. This thesis proposes a novel dynamic state estimator that is resilient against data injection attacks and robust to modeling errors and additive noise signals. By leveraging principles of robust optimization, the estimator can be formulated as a convex optimization problem and its effectiveness is demonstrated in simulations of an IEEE 14-bus system.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper aspires to answer the question of what mistakes the United States Air Force committed during operation rolling thunder in the Vietnam war. The purpose of this is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the operation and moreover to contextualise the mistakes that were made and that according to modern papers of military failures are continuing to be made. There have been studies that have sought to explain the operations failures but by using the framework of the prevalent theorists John A. Warden and Robert A. Papes theories i hope to shed new light on this topic. By using John A. Warden and Robert A. Papes theories concerning the use and implementation of airpower important factors missing from the planning or execution of this operation can be identified. One overarching problem with the operation is the continued meddling by politicians and civilian cabinet members in the planning and execution of the operation. A fear of Chinese involvement also lead to incredibly strict rules of engagements that forbade american pilots from even returning fire in some instances. A lack of commitment and constant ceasefires hindered the operation from succeeding in putting enough pressure on the north vietnamese and allowed them to rebuild what was destroyed. One last key factor was the lack of coordination between the aerial and ground forces, this deminitied the effectiveness of both.

Abstract:
As distributed generations and renewable energy are becoming the fastest growing segment of the energy industry, the technical issues and environmental impacts have to be studied and understood. The large number of small-scale Microgrid components with their own characteristics is a big challenge for Microgrid modeling, simulation, planning and operation.

The major goal of this thesis is to build a library of various Microgrid components. First of all, the thesis is going to present a detailed description of Microgrid models with moderate complexity. Next, it will present the modeling of loads, utility grid and transmission lines. Then, the paper will discuss the distributed generation models that have been developed in Matlab/Simulink including Diesel Engine, Fuel Cell, Micro Gas Turbine, Wind Turbine, Photovoltaic Cell, along with the detailed modeling of short-term storage (Battery, Pumped Hydro Storage, Flywheel, and Supercapacitor). In addition to steady-state study, the thesis will also discuss the hybrid sample systems that are built to investigate their transient responses.

To enhance the simulation performance, some improvements on modeling and simulation will be introduced as well. To accommodate the high demand of renewable energy and the environment policy, the planning and operation the of Micro-source generators has been studied using HOMER. Simulation results show a case study of an optimal microgrid configuration on Ontario area in Canada. Sensitivity variables are specified to examine the effect of uncertainties, especially in a long-term planning. Also, demand side management plays an important role in the operation of Microgrid. Based on raw data, case studies are carried out to investigate and validate the demand response methods. Finally, the philosophy for Microgrid protection, especially Time-delay overcurrent protection, will be briefly introduced in both gird-connected and islanding modes.

Since 2008 the EU has, through Operation Atalanta, supported the UN in protecting humanitarian trans- ports off the Somali coast. This thesis examines if Operation Atalanta has also contributed to the de- creased pirate activity, which is evaluated by applying counterinsurgency theories to the operation. Can theories on counterinsurgency explain the success of Operation Atalanta in reduced piracy? A theoretical framework has been developed based on factors believed to trigger piracy and discourage insurgence. This has been applied to the operation to test if its actions can be related or linked to coun- terinsurgency. The result shows that the operation’s activities can be connected to counterinsurgency and is therefore believed to have contributed to the decrease in pirate activity.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the experience of humanitarian relief charity in the Sudan from 1986, the creation of Operation Lifeline Sudan (OLS) in April 1989 and its experience to 1996. This historical analysis also situates OLS within the international relief system. OLS experience generally provides an important case study in the mixture of motives and views in contemporary international affairs and the subsequent difficulty we have in theorising within that experience. Throughout 1989-96, OLS was able to establish an environment on which the rights of internally displaced persons to relief food and security was possible. This was within the context o f a continuing civil war, where relief objectives were at odds with the military objectives of the combatants, the diverse views of the donor governments, and the technical difficulties of delivering aid in such circumstances. The instruments used by OLS to gain access to those needing aid involved the use of humanitarian norms, principles and agreements to shame and, sometimes, sanction those denying access. These rhetorical devices are relevant to other war affected areas and constitute a useful development in humanitarian intervention. The theoretical implication of this development for our understanding of international relations is briefly explained in the conclusion.

Abstract:
A microgrid is a subnetwork of power system that consists of a group of distributed energy sources and loads. It is designed to integrate distributed generation, loads, energy storage devices, converters, and monitoring and protection devices. Generally, a successful microgrid could run both in island mode (off-grid) and in grid-connected mode (on-grid), being able to convert between two modes at any time. With continuous development of the power system, distributed renewable generation unit accounts for an increasing proportion, since microgrid could effectively connect these generation units to the main grid, thereby improving the energy efficiency and the energy structure. Microgrid is increasingly playing an important role in the power system. Abstract:
The Swedish veteran investigation brings attention to the problem of the media image of Sweden's participation in international missions. The purpose of this paper is to identify differences between the Swedish Armed Forces’ and the four major newspapers’ (Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Expressen and Svenska Dagbladet) reports of the events of Operation Artemis in Congo in 2003, and to investigate whether the reporting is different depending on whether it is a morning newspaper or tabloid. The analysis is made based on a narrative perspective and the newspapers have been analyzed according to categories of newspaper economics, sensationalist journalism, objectivity, bias and simplification. The paper shows that there are differences in how the Armed Forces and the newspapers reported from Operation Artemis. The essay also shows that reporting is different between newspapers and tabloids. There are also similarities in the reports on which all the newspapers have a bias and simplify some parts to help the reader understand the content. The Armed Forces show an objectivity and to clearly explain the sequence of events. The Armed Forces offer depth knowledge of the topic to the reader and offers the reader clarity with the help of fact boxes next to the articles.
