Abstract:
In this article, Z.N.Vorozheykina, first of all, paid attention to the socio-ethical events that were the focus of the poet's attention, and in this context, analyzed the meaning and ideological essence of the poet's rubai, and in the article "Umar Khayyom and Khayyom's rubai" first Khayyom indicates the sources that informed him as a poet. In particular, he mentions the testimonies of "Khayyam's younger contemporary, historian Abulhasan Bayhaqi", Arabic-speaking historian Kifti, Arabic-speaking jurist Najmuddin Razi about "Khayyam's Arabic poems and his Persian rubai". This scientist singles out Khayyam's poetry in the rubai genre and considers "the main content of his poems to be philosophical and joyous lyrics." In this context, analyzing Khayyam's Rubaiyat based on a mental approach, he comes to the conclusion that it is a "great idea". Taking into account the personality of the poet Khayyam, that is, the confirmation of the right of every person living on earth to live happily, allows us to consider Khayyam the greatest humanist of the past," he says (45, 13). From this point of view, the researcher analyzes samples from Khayyam's Rubaiyat. and shows its essence and main approaches of thought. Segregation of Khayyam's work into the world of topics, identification of ideological directions, recognition and evaluation of Khayyam's work, the merits of this orientalist are very great. Omar Khayyam's biography occupies a special place in Russian oriental studies. In the scientific works devoted to the study of this topic, issues such as his birthplace, social status, date and place of birth, personal and family life, and his relationship with his contemporaries were evaluated from different angles. Abstract:
In Latvia, unlike in other countries, the poetry of the outstanding Persian encyclopedist and poet Omar Khayyam Nīshapūrī (1048–1131) was discovered relatively late, when the poet Andrejs Kurcijs translated his quatrains. It must be admitted that even today, for the Latvian reader Omar Khayyam happens to be almost the only one poet of the Islamic world they would recognise. Omar Khayyam’s rubais have not lost their popularity until this day, as evidenced by a large number of re-published rubai translations by Kurcijs. His poetry translations are quite similar to what Edward FitzGerald once called rendering. When translating poetry, its characteristic foot, the number of syllables, and rhythm often are lost. The author of the particular article aimed to find out which of the manuscripts Kurcijs used for the translation, but unfortunately, the search was unsuccessful. The source text would have made it possible to compare Kurcijs’s performance with the original text.

A álgebra das equações tem seus primórdios na ciência islâmica medieval. Este trabalho é um recorte de uma pesquisa doutoral mais ampla em desenvolvimento que envolve a análise do tratado algébrico de Omar Khayyam (1048-1131), cujo título é Al-Risala fi-l-barahin ‘ala masa’il al-jabr wa-l-muqabala (Tratado sobre demonstrações dos problemas da álgebra e almuqabala). Ao se tratar de álgebra das equações, torna-se imprescindível citar o sábio al-Khwarizmi (780-850), que escreveu um tratado algébrico, conhecido até os dias de hoje como a Álgebra de al-Khwarizmi (780-850). O presente trabalho é sobre o desenvolvimento da álgebra islâmica de al-Khwarizmi a Omar Khayyam. O estudo tem como objetivo descrever o que foi elaborado e desenvolvido em álgebra islâmica de al- Khwarizmi a Omar Khayyam. Possibilitando um melhor entendimento do significado da álgebra de Khayyam, pois em seu tratado ele menciona alguns sábios que estudaram álgebra antes dele. A pesquisa foi realizada por meio de pesquisa bibliográfica, a princípio na plataforma de periódicos da Capes e para complementar utilizamos a busca pelas biografias dos sábios para descrever a trajetória, na página eletrônica Mac Tutor. Apresentamos este percurso de desenvolvimento da álgebra, como resultado obtido, considerando que novos estudos podem ampliá-lo. Os estudiosos que encontramos foram: Al-Khwarizmi resolvendo equações lineares e quadráticas, apresentando a álgebra como uma prática para resolver problemas e nomeando a álgebra; al-Mahani que chegou em uma equação envolvendo cubos, quadrados e números; Abu Kamil que aplicou a álgebra no pentágono e no decágono regular; al-Karaji que aritmetizou a álgebra, primórdios para o modelo da álgebra moderna; e chegando a Omar Khayyam que desenvolveu por meio de intersecções de seções cônicas um método geométrico de resolver equações cúbicas. Among the literati and men of culture of Iran, it is not exaggerated to call Khayyam one of the vaguest figures. One might recognize him certainly and resolutely through his philosophical and scientific works; however, it was his Rubaiyat attributed to him which created many arguments. This paper studies Hakim Omar Khayyam’s Rubaiyat in English and Persian language feature and non-biographical movies; hence, biographical movies depicting factual or imaginary life of Khayyam or any serials, TV productions, documentaries, non- English, non- Persian movies are not included. The aim is to expound any relationships between the film and Rubaiyat; therefore, according to the type of the applied quatrain, movie genre, plot, some categories are propounded to classify the movies in which Khayyam’s quatrains are quoted such as Transiency-Death, Transiency-Carpe Diem, Heaven and Hell, and Determinism. Indeed, these categories can be applied to the theme of the movies or a single scene in which the stanza is quoted.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this article is to substantiate the proposition that mathematicians and architect-artisans had collaborated through special meetings, called conversazioni in the text, for the application of geometry to architecture in the Islamic world. A meeting reportedly attended by Omar Khayyam furnishes convincing evidence for this proposition. The study expands on the untitled treatise written by Omar Khayyam as a response to a question raised at this meeting. The treatise is about a problem that concerns an ornamental pattern, the story of which can be traced in two other works on geometry: Abu 'l-Wafa' al-Buzajani's book, What the Artisan Requires of Geometric Constructions, and an anonymous Persian treatise on ornamental geometry, On Interlocking Similar or Corresponding Figures. While these three works are analyzed in the article, the wider implications of the collaboration between mathematicians and artisans concerning the field of architecture are discussed.

Abstract:
This study is a practice-based creative writing project with an accompanying thesis. It consists of Ruby, a work of poetry and prose, along with a thesis that seeks to contextualise it within literary poetics. The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is the creative point of origin of Ruby. It is not a translation of The Rubaiyat in the traditional sense but rather a re-interpretation of the earlier text. Whilst Ruby heavily references The Rubaiyat in terms of content and narrative structure, it is an original piece of work set in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Ruby is strongly influenced by contemporary British and American poetry, and the references for the poem have partly been shifted to modern-day Britain. I have included a range of recognisable forms of “conventional” poetry, including quatrains, sonnets and haiku. However, there is also creative re-working and development using a variety of more experimental methods, through original poetic compositions, the use of “found material” (i.e. texts and images from other sources carefully placed for poetic effect) and via word montage. The result is a hybrid piece of work, which incorporates a variety of textual and visual forms. The thesis is divided into four chapters: the first is an introduction to the nature and aims of Ruby, and an overview of how it fits with other current research activity in the field of “poetic translation.” The second chapter explicates the format and structure of the creative piece, particularly its visual layout. The third chapter contains the text itself and a detailed critical commentary, which explores specific allusions in the text and how they connect the work to broader literary themes. The final chapter is a conclusion, exploring the implications of the poetics of Ruby to the subsequent treatment of re-interpretative translations of this kind.

This study was written in the belief that FitzGerald did not so much translate a poem as invent a persona based on the Persian astronomer and mathematician (but not poet) Omar Khayyám. This 'invention' opened two different lines of interpretation and scholarship, each forming its own idea of a 'real' Omar based on FitzGerald's invention. One line sees Omar as a hedonist and nihilist; the other as a mystic or Sufi. My argument first is that the historical Omar was neither the former nor the latter; second, FitzGerald's Rubáiyát is a 'Victorian' product even if the raw material of the poem belongs to the eleventh-century Persia. ¶ The Introduction tries to find a place for the Rubáiyát in the English nineteenth-century era. ¶ Chapter One sets FitzGerald's Rubáiyát in perspective. First, it surveys the general background and context to the lives and careers of Edward FitzGerald and Omar Khayyám in order to show how FitzGerald's life was affected by some of the main concerns of the period; and that Omar was neither a hedonist nor a mystic; Secondly, it surveys four major critical studies which have generated different approaches to and emphases in the study and the translation of the rubáiyát attributed to Omar Khayyám. ¶ Chapter Two reviews some examples of Persian language and literature as they were perceived by British readers and authors and shows the reception of Persian poetry in general up to and including the Victorian period. Then it traces FitzGerald's progress with Persian literature, showing how the other Persian poets he read influenced his understanding or 'creation' of the Rubáiyát, and how he discarded the great Persian poets but retained Omar Khayyám as 'his property.' ¶ Chapter Three traces FitzGerald's career as a translator and attempts to give general characteristics of Victorian poetry to show how FitzGerald's version can be seen a Victorian product. Study of the poetry of the period shows the heterogeneity of Victorian poetry and FitzGerald's poem is another example of this multiplicity. The Rubáiyát should be read as a revolt against general Victorian values: optimism, earnestness, Puritanism, and science development. ¶ Chapter Four accounts for the initial neglect of the poem and then for the popular reception of the Rubáiyát by the Pre-Raphaelites and shows aspects in particular appealed to his contemporaries (like R. Browning) which, in turn, is a way of measuring the success of FitzGerald's 'Victorian' invention.

Abstract:
This edition of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is the first edition of that poem to be based on principles of modern textual criticism and to include the fullest account of the poem's texts and textual history. A corrected text of the Rubáiyát has long been needed: my edition provides the most accurate multiple texts of the FitzGerald's work to date and a complete account of the poem's textual history, incorporating new material previously unreported or unpublished. In its very shape as well as in its textual commentary, the edition argues for editorial principles that accommodate the practical aims of literary critical editing, a nuanced understanding of the participation of authorial intention in the sociology of texts, and a sensitivity to the peculiar semiology of the critical edition. The contents of the edition are divided into three parts. The first of these comprises an introduction in which biographical accounts of Omar Khayyám and Edward FitzGerald are dovetailed with a history of the Rubáiyát's composition and publication. FitzGerald's textual intentions cannot properly be understood without recognizing the crucial influence exerted by friends, publishers, printers, and foreign piracies over the poem's earliest composition and over its subsequent revisions. I argue that the stages of FitzGerald's writing should not be fused, and confused, in a single-minded progress, and I make extensive use of biography and textual history to insist on the integrity of each published text of the Rubáiyát. Following the introduction, I discuss in a textual note the problems of editing the texts of the poem and the editorial principles guiding my choice of texts and presentation. An explanatory list of emendations made to FitzGerald's texts accompanied by local arguments for each correction is supplied in a succeeding note. The second part of the edition comprises critical texts of the four original editions of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám published between 1859 and 1879.

En effet, on peut se demander si les traducteurs ont transformé la signification et la forme des quatrains perses. Si oui, quelles procédures ont-ils utilisées ? Plus précisément, comment les réseaux signifiants sous-jacents ont-ils été rendus par les plus importants traducteurs anglais et français des XIXe et XXe siècles ? This thesis aims to carry out a meticulous analysis of the transformation of form and meaning in the rendition of the Rubáiyát in four significant 19th and 20th-century translations—two in English and two in French. The translators of the selected translations are Edward FitzGerald, Arthur John Arberry, Jean-Baptiste Nicolas, and Gilbert Lazard. The translations produced by these translators have offered opportunities of investigation within linguistic boundaries. In fact, one may wonder if the translators have transformed the meaning and the form of the Persian quatrains. If so, which procedures have they employed? More precisely, how are the underlying networks of signification rendered by the most significant English and French translators of the 19th and 20th centuries? Furthermore, what is the quality of the writing in the target language in each translation? On the whole, this thesis seeks to appreciate whether the translators have been successful in understanding the significance of the subtext and the elegance of the poetic form of the Rubáiyát.This dissertation provides its readers with a scientific application of the theoretical concepts of different theorists in translation studies, linguistics, and literature. The most salient theories employed in the present research are those of Antoine Berman, Henri Meschonnic, Peter Newmark, Eugene Albert Nida, Susan Bassnett, Mona Baker, Geoffrey N. Leech, I.A. Richards, Roger T. Bell, George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, Michael Hanne, and Max Black. In addition, it must be indicated that this thesis sets out to create a balance between two poles in translation studies, i.e. target-oriented and source-oriented translations.The translation of Omar Khayyám’s Rubáiyát into Germanic and Romance languages is an interesting and controversial subject to discuss. This research seeks to prove that the study of the translations of the Rubáiyát can contribute to highlighting the difficulties and the impossibilities of the rendition of certain issues from Persian into English or French

Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Edward FitzGerald’s poem Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám has been illustrated over a hundred and fifty times during the decade and a half since its first publication. These illustrations have depicted exotic, arcadian other-places that ignore the poem’s frequent endorsement to live with immediacy. My Practice-based Creative PhD project has focused on producing a visual interpretation that reflects the immediate landscapes of my own physical situation: modern Australia. I have crafted illustrations that use the current landscapes and biotic content of the Hunter Valley, NSW, to emphasise not only the ongoing relevance of this poem to the brevity of human life but also my interpretations of the poem. To describe the poem’s frequent references to the passage of time I have drawn on my experience as a Natural History Illustrator, integrating the cycle of seasonal climatic events, plant and animal behaviour into my visual interpretation. I have also inverted the existing trend of exotic illustrations in a familiar physical context (that of a book) by presenting my depiction of the familiar, local environments in two exotic formats. These formats are based on Japanese narrative-scrolls and woodblock prints, providing unusual and intentionally tactile creative objects.
