Abstract:
Daily practice shows that educators, teachers, and children find it interesting to jointly organize sports events and competitions that they call "small Olympics, athletic Olympics - in the world of competition and the like". For example, similar to this was the final event of preschoolers in the primary school "Mladost" from Belgrade in June 2023. It is interesting to emphasize that before the new era, the Olympiads represented a unit of measure of 4 years between two Olympic Games. The Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games will be held in Paris in 2024. This paper is intended, primarily for those who are interested in the Olympic Games as the largest sports competition in the world, which is held every four years. In this paper, all members of one family can find something interesting, both the youngest and the oldest. The purpose of this paper is to acquaint readers of different ages with the origin of the Olympic Games, both ancient (Olympia before the new era) and these modern (renewed) ones that were created inspired by the ancient Olympic Games. This paper can serve as a good starting point, primarily for educators, but also for teachers, for planning project and teaching activities on the topic of the Olympic Games, sports competitions, mythology, winter and summer sports, Paralympic competitions, various symbols that are dominant before some planetary events in the near future such as the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024, as well as nations, continents and cities that at least briefly unite the idea of the Olympic Games.

Abstract:
The history of the Summer Olympic Games is too rich and deserves a lot of space and attention. Between the two Olympics in Paris (1924-2024), exactly 100 years have passed. A whole century. This city was the organizer of the Olympic Games in 1900, when France won the most medals. This work and the idea of extracting the names of medal winners from these areas from the multitude of data is a modest contribution to the preservation of the Olympic spirit. For all athletes, going to the Olympic Games is a dream come true. The intention is to encourage already established athletes to fulfill the norm and find themselves in the selection of Serbia in 2024 at the Olympics in Paris. And so that they never forget the message: Persistence, will and love for sports are the drivers of many sporting and life activities and feats. The history of Olympism, scholarly works and books, will celebrate the pride of each Olympic medal-winning nation.

Abstract:
Purpose: to determine the results of performances of Ukrainian martial arts representatives at the Olympic Games. Material and methods. The analysis of scientific and methodological literature, protocols and video recordings of competitions of Ukrainian athletes in various types of martial arts (Greco-Roman wrestling, freestyle wrestling, judo, taekwondo, boxing, karate, fencing) at the 1996 Olympic Games (Atlanta, USA) was used to solve the research tasks. , 2000 (Sydney, Australia), 2004 (Athens, Greece), 2008 (Beijing, China), 2012 (London, Great Britain), 2016 (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), 2021 (Tokyo, Japan). Results: it was found that in 1996, Ukraine first took part in the Summer Olympic Games as an independent team. Martial arts athletes take an active part in every Olympic Games and bring medals to the coffers of the national team of Ukraine. The largest number of medals was won by martial artists at the 2012 Olympic Games - 10 medals (52,6 % of all medals), then at the 2021 Olympic Games - 9 (47,4 %), 2008 Olympic Games - 9 (37,5 %), -2000 – 8 (34,8 %), OI-2016 – 3 (27,3 %), OI-2004 – 4 (18,2 %). It was determined that the largest number of athletes who took part in the Olympics as part of the national team of Ukraine from 1996 to 2021 was in fencing - 63, then in freestyle wrestling - 61, in judo - 51, in boxing - 48, in Greco- in Roman wrestling - 38, in karate and taekwondo - 3 athletes each. Conclusions. It was established that during the independence of Ukraine, Ukrainian athletes took part in 7 Olympic Games. During this time, martial arts athletes won 49 medals (10 gold, 14 silver, 25 bronze), which is 34,8 % of all medals won by Ukrainian athletes. The following types of martial arts were presented in the Olympic program: Greco-Roman wrestling, freestyle wrestling, judo, boxing, karate, taekwondo, fencing. In total, from 1996 to 2021, Ukrainian martial artists took part in the Olympic Games 267 times.

Abstract:
Purpose: to identify the features of the sports career of Olympic champions in women's wrestling. Material and Methods. The main materials for the study were personal indicators of the sports career of 18 Olympic champions in wrestling (data were taken from the official website of UWW (https://unitedworldwrestling.org)). Research methods: analysis and synthesis, documentary method, comparison, methods of mathematical statistics. The study analyzed the careers of 18 freestyle wrestlers from 5 Olympic Games who won the title of champion in these competitions. The study took into account all the performances at official competitions (continental championships and world championships in all age groups and the Youth Olympic Games) of wrestlers. Results: it was found that in 5 Olympic Games, which included women's wrestling in the program (since 2004), 18 athletes won 18 out of 24 possible Olympic gold titles. The youngest age of the first performance at official international competitions before the Olympic triumph among the studied athletes was 15 years old. The latest first performance in the international arena among the study participants was recorded at the age of 25. It was found that the period from the first performance at official competitions to the gold medal at the Olympic Games was 5-9 years. It was also found that the shortest period from the first performance in the international arena to winning the Olympic Games was 2 years, and the longest was 15 years. To win Olympic gold, athletes had to participate in 9 official international competitions on average. The average age at which female athletes won at the Olympics is 22. Conclusions. To win gold at the Olympics, highly skilled wrestlers usually need to participate in a fairly large number of international competitions. However, there are exceptions in history among female athletes who have managed to reach the highest podium much faster and with fewer international competitions. This largely depends on individual characteristics and the specifics of the wrestlers' training system. Keywords: free wrestling, women, highly qualified sportswomen, competition, Olympic Games.

Abstract:
Analysis of Ukrainian athletes’ results at the XXXII Olympiad Games allows pointing out the factors of the weak performance of Ukrainian athletes in women's individual saber and epee competitions, as well as men's team epee competitions, despite the possibility of winning medals in these sports events according to many analysts including those of Infostrada Sports and other sports statistics experts. These, in our opinion, include an unsatisfactory level of efficiency of the process of reaching the peak of readiness for the Olympic Games; lack of psychological stability of athletes at the competitions; weak tactical preparation of some athletes. Based on the performances of athletes of the Ukrainian fencing team in Tokyo, a conclusion was made about the unsatisfactory level of athletes’ preparation for the XXXII Olympic Games. Only 20% of the national team members were able to realize their potential at the XXXII Olympic Games. The dynamics of the athletes’ results at the World Championships 2017 – 2019 indicates the need to use in the new Olympic cycle the planning, which is focused on our athletes reaching the peak of readiness for the Olympics: at first, the training should be aimed at the maximum stimulation of the growth of sportsmanship, whereas at the final stage it should be focused on its realization in the major competitions. It is shown that despite the unsuccessful performance of the Ukrainian fencing team in the Olympic Tokyo, this type of martial arts has significant potential for improving sports achievements at the XXXIII Olympic Games 2024 in Paris. It is noted that in the new Olympic cycle it is of crucial importance to identify candidates for the XXXIII Olympic Games as soon as possible and to create all the conditions for their full-fledged preparation. Thus, to ensure further winning medal places at the Olympic Games, it is necessary to improve the system of sports training in the Olympic cycle, which envisages participation in numerous competitions during the year to achieve a high level of readiness in the major competitions of triennial – the Olympic Games.

Abstract:
Abstract Protests over sustainability concerns attached to hosting the Olympic Games have resulted in several bid withdrawals and a low number of candidate cities willing to host the most recent editions. Worried about the future, the International Olympic Committee adopted the Olympic Agenda 2020, promising to adapt the event to contemporary sustainability paradigms. Some of its urban-related reforms have already impacted recently hosted Games and are impacting the planning for those to come. The IOC claims that Paris 2024 will be the first Games to be fully aligned with the Agenda. This article addresses the urban preparations for Paris 2024 and assesses their alignment with the new reforms. The objective is to identify difficulties in the implementation of the Agenda and to outline future research that can, potentially, enhance its efficiency. Results reveal Paris 2024 is innovative but certain features are difficult to implement, leaving room to improve the Agenda.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the analysis of the features of current qualification systems in combat sports. It was established that the International Sports Federations (ISF) develops the Olympic qualification systems and specific criteria for athletes to obtain licenses. The structure and content of these systems may differ in each Olympic cycle. In 2021-2024 cycle, qualification at the Olympics in combat sports is possible in two ways: through the athlete's position in the official ISF ranking or by demonstrating a certain result at qualifying tournaments. In taekwondo, judo and fencing it is possible to obtain "direct" qualification for the Olympic Games through the official ISF ranking or demonstration of a certain result at the qualifying tournament ("tournament of last hope" for participants from NOCs who have not yet obtained an Olympic license). The possibility of qualifying in team depends on its high place in the official ISF team ranking. If a certain team could not qualify through to the world ranking, its members are able to do it only in individual events (by individual qualification). For boxing and wrestling, qualification to the Olympic Games is possible by certain result in special tournaments or "tournaments of last hope" (for participants from NOCs who have not yet obtained an Olympic license). The range of weight categories in which athletes may participate is almost equal for men and women. The differences in the Olympic qualification systems for the 2024 XXIII Games in Paris are its duration, the ownership of the obtained license (personal or for the NOC), the number of types of competitions, the presence of different rankings (world, continental, Olympic, individual, team).

Abstract The present paper aims to discuss the correlation between surveillance technologies and Olympic Games. The latter have become a “security spectacle” only behind wars in terms of budget. Surveillance, however, does not pertain only to security, as it has infiltrated our everyday life and has become a “culture.” To prepare for the 2024 Olympics, surveillance technologies, through an array of innovations, have been put forward in the Parisian territory: from facial recognition cameras and behavioral analysis systems to drones and anti-drone technologies. If it were not for the Olympic context, they would be considered “exceptions.” However, as it will be discussed in the paper, they have been normalized and integrate all the planning dimensions of this sports mega-event.

Abstract:
Prevention of sports injury and illness and protection of athlete health are key mandates of the IOC. Methodological limitations in Olympic Games surveillance and retired Olympian studies mean there are gaps in the available evidence on Olympian health and the varied challenges occurring at different stages throughout an athlete’s career. This (protocol) paper describes the methods for implementation of the IOC Olympian Health Cohort. The study aims to establish a longitudinal cohort of current Olympians and follow them prospectively (around 15 years) throughout their Olympic careers and retirement. The study will use participants who have completed self-report questionnaires. Olympians will be recruited after each Summer and Winter Olympic Games, and all National Olympic Committee (NOC) athletes aged 16 years or older are eligible. The first phase included the Tokyo 2020/2021 and Beijing 2022 Olympians, with the study promoted via IOC platforms, Athlete365 and NOCs. Questionnaires include baseline demographics, sports exposure and history of injuries and illnesses impacting the athlete’s ability to continue to train and/or compete for at least 2 weeks. Questions also address retirement from sports, musculoskeletal, mental and general health, and quality of life measures. This protocol describes the methods for the 15-year global IOC Olympian Health Cohort Study, from participant recruitment to the development and distribution of the study questionnaire. This protocol will be updated to report future changes in the study’s conduct or questionnaire content. These data will help identify risk factors and inform risk-reduction strategies. The ultimate goal is to protect the health of all athletes during their careers and retirement.

Abstract:
This Master Thesis develops the challenges of travel modeling during the Olympic and Paralympic Games, more specially for the Paris Olympics in 2024. This problem as been set by IDFM (Île-de-France Mobilités), the transport organisation authority of Paris and its region, that has therefore to deal with public travel during the Olympics. A very simplified model was already in use, but is no longer sufficient. The exceptional nature of this event, considered as a mega-event, requires a precise understanding of the subject as well as a different and adaptive modeling process. Thus, this work presents a detailed methodology for public transport travel modeling in Paris and its surroundings during the Olympics. This model will become more and more refined until the end of this mega-event, in order to present results or advert the multiple stakeholders around the topic of the Olympic Games transportation (event organizers, transport operators). The two significant parts of the model are distinguished and described: the Olympic Games related trips and the background demand, which require two very different approaches. The OG demand needs several assumptions which are often in constant evolution: the versatility of the parameters is a very important point to take into account. On the other side, the background demand prediction is a significant challenge because it differs from what is usually done. Both of these parts are adapted from the principle of the four-step transportation model and reuse parts of the IDFM model, ANTONIN 3, specifically calibrated for the Île-de-France region. It is also necessary to conceive with the will to adapt as much as possible the available transport data and the tools already in operation, such as the model already in use. Suggestions for further improvements are also mentioned to refine the results until the final day which will be possible thanks to enhancements of the input assumptions over time, such as ticketing data for instance.

Abstract:
The rapid urbanisation that has accompanied the development of cities has profoundly transformed natural environments, exerting a direct influence on the atmosphere in the vicinity. In addition to the well-known phenomenon of the urban heat island, characterised by higher temperatures in urban areas than in the surrounding rural areas, cities also have the capacity to modify convection and precipitation. In favourable situations, these phenomena can be reinforced over and downwind of the urbanised area, depending on the prevailing wind. To improve the modelling of these urban-atmosphere interactions and improve their anticipation, it is essential to study the impact of urbanisation on precipitation and understand the mechanisms involved. This thesis is based on multiple approaches, integrating observational and modelling tools, to conduct a comprehensive study of the impact of urbanisation on convection and precipitation in the Paris region. The first step involved establishing a climatology of thunderstorms over the Île-de-France region and its neighbouring departments between 2010 and 2022. Data from the French radar mosaic and lightning observations were analysed in order to identify the periods of the year and the zones most affected by severe convection in the Paris region. The direction of the mid-altitude wind was considered in this work, which demonstrated an increase in thunderstorm frequency in the sectors over and downwind of the city compared to the upwind sector.Subsequently, a second step involved the conduct of numerical simulations to ascertain the sensitivity of precipitation to urbanisation. Two configurations of the Meso-NH research model were implemented, one accounting for the urbanisation of Paris and the other replacing urban areas with vegetation. The originality of this thesis lies in the usage of a set of simulations with a horizontal resolution of 300m, which allowed for the numerical uncertainties inherent in the modelling of thunderstorm phenomena to be taken into account. This approach, initially tested on a case of diurnal convection, demonstrated its utility for estimating the significance of the results and analysing the urban processes involved in the alteration of precipitation. The method was then extended to a range of convective situations over the Paris region in order to provide a broader overview of the key processes. The analysis carried out showed that due to the increase of sensible heat flux in the urban environment, the vertical velocities in the lower layers are strengthened, and the boundary layer is thicker. This has the effect of triggering convection over the urbanised area and increasing precipitation over or downwind of the city during favourable situations. This work provides new perspectives on the use of ensembles on a horizontal hectometric scale to study complex phenomena such as thunderstorms and their interaction with urbanised surfaces

Abstract:
The following master thesis is the product of the work carried out during the Erasmus exchange of the year 2017-2018 that involved the author, exchange student from the University of Bologna, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya , TriM, an italian company with a strong knowledge of weather data and forecasting, and Meteocat, the public meteorological company of Catalonia in a collaboration aimed to find new methodologies for the processing of meteorological data. The reason that motivated this work is dictated by the increasing amount of weather data available today, that necessarily drives the weather forecasting in a more automated procedure that reduces the time needed to generate a forecast and the intervention of a human, in the figure of a meteorologist, in the analysis of the data. This allows to process more data and thus having predictions that take advantages of the usage of many information that could result in improved forecasting. The development in the field of machine learning allows today to treat a vast amount of information in an automatic way, leaving the analysis process to the machines, freeing the user of this time-consuming task. And unsupervised learning is the branch that can process data that are not labelled nor preprocessed, speeding up the data mining. The goal of this thesis is to apply unsupervised learning techniques to this scope, taking inspiration from the available literature that experimented in this field and combining different solutions into a new technique that aims to reduce the human decision in the process of the recognition of wind patterns and improve the automationof the whole process.

The aim of this dissertation is to further the reader’s insight and understanding of discrimination in the context of human rights, in particular in the field of gender and transgender studies. This work will carry out an analysis of different newspaper articles regarding the recent Olympic games which took place in Tokyo. In specific, the articles regard the transgender athletes who, for the first time in the history of the games, competed in the gender category of their choice, despite the International Olympic Committee allowing transgender athletes to compete since 2004. The analysis will be based on articles written by both Italian and American newspapers in order to get a double point of view on the matter. Moreover, we’ll look at the differences between news publications based on their country of origin, in an attempt to understand whether the peculiarities of the two languages have influenced both the rhetoric of what’s being said and the very message they convey.

Olson, Erik Johan. "Rescinding a Bid: Stockholm's uncertain relationship with the Olympic Games." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/82866.

Full text
Abstract:
The City of Stockholm has undergone a curious process of considering whether to launch a bid for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. That Stockholm has contemplated launching a bid is not surprising from a regional perspective—the Olympic Games have not been held in a Scandinavian country since Lillehammer, Norway played host in 1994 and Sweden has never hosted the Winter Olympics. A potential bid from Stockholm would also be consistent with Sweden's self-identification and embracement of being a 'sportive nation'. Failed applications by the Swedish cities of Gothenburg, Falun, and Östersund to host the Winter Olympic Games confirm the long-standing interest of the Swedish Olympic Committee to secure the Games, although it should be noted that the Swedish Olympic Committee did not submit a bid for the 2006, 2010, 2014 or 2018 Winter Olympic Games competitions. Although recent reports indicate that Stockholm will not vie for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, the notion that the city was even considering the option remains surprising. Stockholm had withdrawn its bid from the 2022 bidding competition citing a variety of concerns including a lack of government and public support, financial uncertainty, as well as the post-event viability of purpose-built infrastructure. Stockholm's withdrawal from the 2022 competition resonates with the growing apprehension by potential bid cities (especially those emerging from democratic countries) towards the Olympic Games. This thesis seeks to illustrate that Stockholm's Olympic hopes have book-ended a transformative period in the Olympic bidding process and to expose the struggle that bid cities have in adjusting to the demands of the IOC's bidding process.

Abstract:
This paper examines the development of income in the tourist generating coun-tries, the relative prices controlled for the exchange rate, and the distance in kilo-meters between the capital in the origin countries and Athens as determinants of international tourism demand for Greece. By the deployment of an OLS log-linear regression model coupled with annual cross-section data for the period between 1998 and 2007, the desired effects could be captured. The results from this study indicates that after 2004, both the importance of income in the tourist generating countries and distance between the countries of origin and Athens have expe-rienced a quantum drop in importance as determinants of international tourism demand for Greece. Furthermore, the elasticities of these factors remained at the new level throughout the remaining period studied. This suggests that the respec-tive elasticities have reached a new plateau after 2004 where the impact on inter-national tourism demand is less sensitive to changes in these specific factors. Final-ly, the investments made in infrastructure supporting the Olympic Games have the possibility to benefit the T&T sector in Greece for an extended period of time going forward.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Mega-events such as the Olympic Games have emerged as one of the most significant features of the global era. Not only has the number of participants increased, but also the hosting of these events has been seen as an opportunity for countries to externally market themselves, in an attempt to raise their international profile, and to develop national identity. As such, many nations continue to enthusiastically compete to host these events. Despite the prestige of hosting events, South Africa has in the past been excluded from participating, let alone being considered to bid to host events of such magnitude. This was as a result of the Apartheid policy that extended into sport. After being admitted into the world of sport, it has joined the list of nations that regularly compete to bid. There are two questions that this study sets out to explore. Firstly, how did hosting of the Games market South Africa internationally? Secondly, did hosting the Games help celebrate South Africa's national identity? In trying to answer these questions, the marketing power concept has been used. Part of the proposition is that marketing power is more sought after by state elites who lack national identity. In light of this, South Africa has been used as a case study. Bidding to host the Olympic Games was no easy road for South Africa, and in the aftermath of the Bid, this study identifies the reasons why the Bid was unsuccessful. The findings suggest that South Africa's attempt to host the Games did indeed market the country internationally. However, the findings indicate that bidding to host the Games did not bolster national identity, instead it revealed that there was lack of unity. In addition there are some important lessons that can be drawn from this study.

Abstract:
Since the 1960 Rome Olympics, the urban transformations triggered by the Olympic Games have gained a greater proportion, leading to a questioning of its heritage. In 2014, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) released a document with 40 guidelines so that the bidding proposal became more aligned with the host city’s future development plan. In this context, Paris is preparing to host the 2024 Olympics, with a campaign strongly rooted in sustainability. Although the French capital already has a consolidated transport network and most of the sporting venues are already built, the sustainability narrative is questionable since it is a mega-event which generates huge carbon emissions. The aim of this paper is to analyse the Paris 2024 Olympic bid to understand the urban transformations provoked by the mega-event and how they might meet sustainability and urban resilience criteria. Keywords: mega-events, Olympics, Paris 2024, urban sustainability.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Introduction: Systematic analysis of statistics from the Olympic Games and World Championships is the most accurate guide to defining the dynamics of performances. The analysis of biographies of finalist swimmers in the highest sports forums proves that age indicator is a reliable parameter for personalized sports realization. Different age indicators in the structure of the long-term training of elite swimmers are decisive, but age is a fundamental category for achieving maximum sports results. Methodology: Information on the age indicators of 72 participants was collected. They took part in the final swims of the Olympic Games in 9 disciplines in a 24-year period (1992-2016). The data was systematized and analyzed, and the analysis is structured around the age of women finalists from the studied Olympic Games. Results: The comparison of the indicator of the average age of the participants in the final swims in 1992 and the participants in the final swims in the last studied Olympics (2016) shows that the difference between the two groups is significant. The critical value at df = 144 and α = .05 is equal to 1.98, which makes the difference statistically significant. Discussion: The analysis of the average age of the Olympic finalists in the period 1992-2016 provides an excellent opportunity to identify trends in the dynamics of this important parameter. For the whole set of finals, summarizing all styles and distances, an increase in the age of women by 1.4-4 years was registered. Conclusion: The average age of women finalists from the studied Olympic Games in 1992 (72 final results) is 20.0 years, and in 2016 it increased to 23.2 years (+ 3.2 years), and in the distance swimmers - from 20.4 years to 23.3 years. (+2.9 years).
