Kerr, Shane. "A sociological critique of the legacy of the London 2012 Paralympic Games." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2015. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/21050.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a sociological critique of the concept of legacy as it surrounded the London 2012 Paralympic Games. A sociological approach was adopted to challenge much of the spontaneous sociology that surrounds the ascendancy of legacy within the Olympic and Paralympic space. Legacy, disability and the Paralympic Games are the predominant structures of the research problem. The literature review attempts to present a sociology of the sociological approaches in these fields. Underpinning the research design is Bourdieu et al. s (1991) epistemological hierarchy which consists of and proceeds from the break , the construction of a conceptual framework to the empirical design. This hierarchy contributed to the repositioning of legacy from the pursuit of cause and effect, or rather away from the pursuit of legitimacy and illegitimacy, of London 2012 to a study of the proposed and imposed causes and effects, legitimations and illegitimations of it. Aligned to this repositioning is the primary collection of data through interviews with five different institutional fields: government, media, corporate sponsors, disability sport and disability institutions. The research findings present a positional analysis of the inter- and intra-relations of these respective fields. In the discussion key symbolic struggles and issues are presented for each field with particular attention given to the development of the positive leaning and legitimising best ever Paralympic narrative and to the commercial and political legitimacy of the London 2012 Paralympic Games. It is concluded that legacy is ultimately a symbolic struggle of different visions of respective agents and institutions that are unable to achieve these absolute visions or ends.

Abstract:
Despite a growing body of literature concerned with the sustainability of sports mega-events, there is relatively little analysis examining environmental sustainability commitments at the Olympic Games, and the environmental impact of the Olympics on the host communities. Research to date has lacked an explicit theoretical underpinning and in particular, the use of theoretical perspectives from the sociology of the environment literature to analyse the intersections between the economy, the environment and locality at the Olympic Games, and the environmental impact of the Games on the host communities. This thesis develops a theoretical framework that combines elements of a „Critical/Marxist‟ perspective, Næss‟ philosophical conceptualisation of „shallow‟ and „deep‟ ecology, and Ecological Modernisation Theory (EMT) in order to better understand the relationship between the environment, sustainability and the Olympic Games. Adopting a three-phase qualitative approach which utilises interviews, focus groups and an analysis of secondary sources, the thesis investigates three main topic areas pertaining to environmental sustainability and the Olympics: the International Olympic Committee‟s (IOC) recent commitment to the environment; local governmental perceptions of the environmental impact of the London Games; and local residents‟ and businesses‟ perceptions of the environmental impact of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The research critically assesses the „shallow‟ ecology/light green and EMT perspective historically adopted by Olympic Games organisers and the power relations that have helped to shape this. Within the context of London 2012 there was a perceived shift in priorities as the Games drew closer with the prioritisation of economic concerns and corporate interests over those of local people. Most notably, the ambiguity of „sustainability‟ was identified as a key factor which influenced local perceptions of the environmental impact of the Games. This original theoretically and empirically informed study makes a contribution to the growing body of research on sustainability and the Games, and to our understanding of the environmental impact of the Olympics on host communities.

Parkes, Stephen David. "The longevity of behaviour change : a case study of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/8981/.

Full text
Abstract:
Travel behaviour change is traditionally regarded as being difficult to achieve, with strategies and initiatives often generating only slow and incremental shifts in behaviour amongst the population. There is an emerging discussion in the literature that more radical approaches to travel behaviour change are needed, to contribute to achieving challenging decarbonisation targets. If a step change is required then one potential source of learning is the study of disruptions to systems of mobility provision, which may provide valuable insights into how more radical travel behaviour change is achieved and, potentially, sustained. This thesis provides an innovative approach to examining major-event disruption, in this case arising from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, to understand the potential for change from such large, disruptive events. A four-wave longitudinal panel survey was applied to establish the extent, and longevity, of change in response to the Games. The research uses the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) to critically examine travel behaviour. The results show that change was extensive during the Games (54% made at least one change); however change was not often sustained afterwards. Reducing, relocating and re-timing were the most common changes. The key elements of the TTM were not well suited to studying change in such a context, however less commonly used constructs of the model contributed to the identification of four clusters within the sample that provided valuable insight into the behaviour observed. This research makes a valuable contribution to the growing literature around the potential for learning, and opportunities for change, when there is an imperative to do so. Whilst the longevity of changes to travel were limited, the research provided greater understanding of the adaptability and planning involved in response to major-event disruption, and what this means for future travel planning. The clusters generated helped to show the psychological constructs important for supporting different types of change, which can contribute to approaching and understanding travel behaviour change in broader contexts, when there is an imperative to change.

Abstract:
This paper studies the difference in number of tourist arrivals between the Olympic games and the Paralympic games in the hosting countries. Using the difference-in-differences method, results show that there is a difference in the number of tourist arrivals between the summer games and winter games, and that hosting the games have a bigger impact on smaller city than on bigger one. They also show that since Vancouver 2010 the Olympic games always attracted more tourists than the Paralympic games. The main conclusion of this paper is that there is definitely a difference in the tourist inflow between the Olympic games and Paralympic games and that the Olympic games attract more tourists than the Paralympic games.

de, Haan Donna. "Evaluating the experience of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the career histories of elite equestrian athletes." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2015. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/17384.

Full text
Abstract:
Equestrian sport has been present on the Modern Olympic programme since 1900 with Para-Equestrian Dressage making its debut at the 1996 Paralympic Games. Due to the combined governance of Olympic and Paralympic versions of the sport, the mixed gender of competition and the potential age range of competitors, equestrian sport provides an opportunity through which to understand a unique context of athlete experience. This thesis has sought to identify and evaluate athlete experience within the context of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and to place this experience within the wider career histories of members of the British Equestrian Team. This study utilised a combination of a systematic literature review methodology and ethnographic data collection and analysis with a critical realist approach, creating a framework that values interpretive insights into how the subjects perceive and construct their world whilst at the same time considering ways in which the literature and individual subjects identify, comment on, and frame the reality of the world of equestrian sport. This study has resulted in the emergence of six themes pertaining to experiencing the games; equestrian sporting culture, identity, values, challenges, performance support and success. Results show many similarities and shared experiences for both the Olympic and Paralympic equestrian athletes. The differences regarding the lived experience for these athletes are predominantly associated with the development of the sport, the relative short Paralympic history of equestrian sport in comparison to the Olympic disciplines, and the place of the Games in the context of the riders career histories. Recognising and understanding the kinds of satisfactions and challenges that individuals experience, the significant features of their athlete identity, and the structural constraints and opportunities of their environment may help identify and design the services and provision required to support the athletes through this elite sporting experience.

Abstract:
This Master Thesis develops the challenges of travel modeling during the Olympic and Paralympic Games, more specially for the Paris Olympics in 2024. This problem as been set by IDFM (Île-de-France Mobilités), the transport organisation authority of Paris and its region, that has therefore to deal with public travel during the Olympics. A very simplified model was already in use, but is no longer sufficient. The exceptional nature of this event, considered as a mega-event, requires a precise understanding of the subject as well as a different and adaptive modeling process. Thus, this work presents a detailed methodology for public transport travel modeling in Paris and its surroundings during the Olympics. This model will become more and more refined until the end of this mega-event, in order to present results or advert the multiple stakeholders around the topic of the Olympic Games transportation (event organizers, transport operators). The two significant parts of the model are distinguished and described: the Olympic Games related trips and the background demand, which require two very different approaches. The OG demand needs several assumptions which are often in constant evolution: the versatility of the parameters is a very important point to take into account. On the other side, the background demand prediction is a significant challenge because it differs from what is usually done. Both of these parts are adapted from the principle of the four-step transportation model and reuse parts of the IDFM model, ANTONIN 3, specifically calibrated for the Île-de-France region. It is also necessary to conceive with the will to adapt as much as possible the available transport data and the tools already in operation, such as the model already in use. Suggestions for further improvements are also mentioned to refine the results until the final day which will be possible thanks to enhancements of the input assumptions over time, such as ticketing data for instance.

MORELLATO, MASSIMO. "Reputational capital and olympic events: a case study of whistler live!" Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10281/29578.

Full text
Abstract:
Mega events such as the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games present unique opportunities to increase the economic and social capital required by destinations to be competitive on the global tourism stage. Engaging Games and community stakeholders in the networks needed to organize and deliver such events is central to creating sustained and positive legacies. Network building and maintenance can occur at a variety of levels and scales. Effective and sustained networks depend on and are shaped by the social and reputational capital created through the process of managing various dimensions of the event. One of the more recent Games’ dimensions used as a vehicle for creating social capital is the Cultural Olympiad. This dissertation creates and tests the utility of a conceptual model in identifying how event organizers strategically select stakeholders and nurture network relations to build the reputational capital needed for sustained competitiveness. It builds this model based on premises and principles emerging from literature related to corporate social responsibility, social capital development, reputational capital creation, Olympic mega-event legacies, tourism destination branding and community based sustainability planning. The study tests the model’s usefulness through a case study of the stakeholders, networks, and outcomes created in the development and delivery of Whistler’s portion of the 2010 Winter Games Cultural Olympiad – ‘Whistler Live!’. It explores the ways in which Whistler engaged its stakeholders and partners so as not only to meet its immediate Olympic goals, but also to contribute the longer term reputation and sustainability of the resort community.

Abstract:
This paper presents the concepts and definitions of geotechnology , with emphasis on two different tools to support the use of this methodology: geoprocessing and geographic information system (GIS ) .The use of this methodological proposal, the geotechnologies, had as objective at observing the phenomena of mega sporting events that will be hosted in the city of Rio de Janeiro, World Cup Football 2014 and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016, as well as meet the requirements of completion of the doctoral thesis. To this end, two articles which observed the phenomenon sports mega-events in the geographic space of the city of Rio de Janeiro were performed. The first verified the urban changes with socioeconomic characteristics, which occurred near the Olympic Park, from a temporal view of the 2000s. The second article noted the geographic area of the city surrounding to the Olympic site and the climate changes that are occurring in these locations by checking the evolution of the surface temperature with the construction of thermal maps and weather data.

Ferrara, J. K. "Public attitudes towards intellectual disabilities after watching Olympic/Paralympic performance." Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2012. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/10972/.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite there being some changes to the way that people with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) are viewed in society, negative attitudes prevail. One of the aspirations of the Paralympic games 2012 organisers was to influence the public’s attitudes towards disabled people. The aim of this study was to investigate whether stimuli depicting people with ID performing at a Paralympic level of sport can change attitudes towards ID. A mixed randomised comparison group design was employed comparing two groups; those who viewed Paralympic level ID sport footage and information, and those who viewed Olympic footage and information on measures of implicit attitudes towards disability and explicit attitudes towards people with ID. One hundred and fourteen students at a UK university were administered the measures pre and post the stimuli presentation. Implicit attitudes significantly changed in a positive direction from T1 to T2 for both groups. Attitudes of empowerment increased from T1-T2, nearing significance. The findings provide evidence that Paralympic (ID) and Olympic footage plus written information seems to change attitudes towards people with ID, at least in the short term. Viewing elite sports information and footage may have at least a short term effect on attitudes towards ID which provides some tentative support to one of the London 2012 legacy promises. However it does not seem to matter which footage people are exposed to. Given both types of stimuli proved effective it suggests the possible role of affect in changing attitudes through the media, which warrants further investigation.

Purdue, David. "Conflict and consensus within the paralympic field : a sociological investigation of an elite disability sport competition." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2011. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/8367.

Full text
Abstract:
This research provides a sociological investigation of an elite disability sport competition known as the Paralympic Games. A quadrennial multi-sport competition for individuals with specific impairments, the Paralympic Games, is explored in this thesis through the method of semi-structured interviews. Individuals interviewed included current and former Paralympians, active and retired disability sport administrators as well as social researchers of disability and disability sport. A number of themes surface in this research which identifies and begins to explore the relationships between the core constituents which influence the Paralympic Games. Assertions about which bodies have a legitimate claim to be involved in Paralympic sport, alongside how impaired bodies are used to create an elite disability sport spectacle, such as the Paralympic Games, remain contested by members and organisations that influence, through consensus and conflict, the development of the Paralympic Movement. The Paralympic Games, of course, has not developed in isolation, but in the context of wider developments across sport. In relation to this the positive and negative influences of the International Olympic Committee upon the Paralympic Games are considered. At the core of the thesis, critical analysis has been generated through the use of the social theory of Pierre Bourdieu. In particular Bourdieu's related concepts of habitus, capital and field, in conjunction with previous research into the Paralympic Movement and the extant literature in the field of disability studies, are used to illuminate the existence of a Paralympic field. The possible manifestation of a Paralympic field is explored through the empirical data collected. As a result this thesis highlights the nexus between the sociology of sport and disability studies. Through the fusion of these fields, and by grounding them in a robust theoretical framework, it is hoped that this research will add positively to the literature in this emerging specialism of the sociology of disability sport.

Abstract:
The following master thesis is the product of the work carried out during the Erasmus exchange of the year 2017-2018 that involved the author, exchange student from the University of Bologna, the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya , TriM, an italian company with a strong knowledge of weather data and forecasting, and Meteocat, the public meteorological company of Catalonia in a collaboration aimed to find new methodologies for the processing of meteorological data. The reason that motivated this work is dictated by the increasing amount of weather data available today, that necessarily drives the weather forecasting in a more automated procedure that reduces the time needed to generate a forecast and the intervention of a human, in the figure of a meteorologist, in the analysis of the data. This allows to process more data and thus having predictions that take advantages of the usage of many information that could result in improved forecasting. The development in the field of machine learning allows today to treat a vast amount of information in an automatic way, leaving the analysis process to the machines, freeing the user of this time-consuming task. And unsupervised learning is the branch that can process data that are not labelled nor preprocessed, speeding up the data mining. The goal of this thesis is to apply unsupervised learning techniques to this scope, taking inspiration from the available literature that experimented in this field and combining different solutions into a new technique that aims to reduce the human decision in the process of the recognition of wind patterns and improve the automationof the whole process.

Abstract:
There is a rising tendency among countries to prioritise some sports over others and make higher investments of money and resources in their elite development (Green and Oakley, 2001). Such policies and strategies are adopted in the UK, too. Some sports are considered more likely to bring Olympic medals than others and therefore, they are targeted to receive higher funding. Those placed outside the selection are more likely to face challenges in practices to develop their winning potential. Following further research in this occurrence, authors have sought evidences for an inter-relation between funding and performance (Garrett, 2004; Green, 2005; De Bosscher, et.al 2006). In addition, some have explored other influential factors and have stressed on the importance of participation in sport, as the quality and quantity of the talent pool plays a vital role in elite athletes’ development (Sam, 2012; Girginov and Hills, 2008; Shibli, 2012). As a result of an in-depth research, an extensive academic knowledge on Elite Sports policies and sport development has been built, as well as on each of the concepts of funding, performance and participation. There are many studies focused on the case of the UK in particular (Houlihan, 2004; Green, 2006). However, fewer authors have studied these concepts in pairs (mainly funding and performance), and none have examined the relationship and impacts of all three (Grix and Phillpots, 2011; Vayens, et.al 2009; Martindale, et.al 2007). This research will aim to establish if such relationship exists between Olympic sports funding distribution, Olympic performance, and national participation numbers. It will provide a critical review of the British sport system and relevant policies, and it will explore where the written policies do not reflect the relevant actions undertaken. Using mixed methods the impacts of the applied policies will be critically discussed. The gap this study aims to fulfil will contribute to the existing knowledge on elite sport development by providing a better understanding on how funding, performance and participation are related and the impacts some taken-for-granted assumptions have caused.

Abstract

Purpose/Aim: The aim is to investigate if there are any differences in the reporting from the Olympic games and the Paralympic games, according to different periodicals or magazines, with focus on Paralymics and sports for handicapped. If so, what are those differences?

Material/Method: The material consists of two periodicals, or magazines; Svensk idrott which is the official paper for the swedish Riksidrottsförbundet, and Handikappidrott, which is the official paper for the swedish Handikappidrottsförbundet. Articles considering the summer games in 1972 and 1976, 1984, 1996 and 2000 was studied with regard to models developed by Algirdas J. Greimas. The methods are both quantitative and qualitative.

Main results: The main results are that the biggest difference between the periodicals really lie in the selection of articles and also in the amount of articles published, considering the games. In Handikappidrott, the articles are aimed towards an initiated audience who are supposed to know much about handicapped people and their sports. Svensk idrott focuses a lot more on different aspects of the Olympic games, such as politics and economy. Also has the aspect of normalisation been of current interest – the problem is that the more of handicapped people and issues that are presented to the audience in order to pinpoint the normality of the issue, the more focus come to lie on what is different from the non-handicapped, and in that way enlarge the gap between handicapped an non-handicapped.

Dyer, Rebekah Mary. "Multivalence, liminality, and the theological imagination : contextualising the image of fire for contemporary Christian practice." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/16452.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis contends that the image of fire is a multivalent and theologically valuable image for application in British Christian communities. My research offers an original contribution by contextualising the image of fire for Christian practice in Britain, and combining critical observation of several contemporary fire rites with theological analysis. In addition, I conduct original case studies of three Scottish fire rituals: the Stonehaven Fireball Ceremony, the Beltane Fire Festival, and Up-Helly-Aa in Lerwick, Shetland. The potential contribution of fire imagery to Christian practice has been overlooked by modern theological scholarship, social anthropologists, and Christian practitioners. Since the multivalence of the image has not been fully recognised, fire imagery has often been reduced to a binary of ‘positive' and ‘negative' associations. Through my study of non-faith fire rituals and existing Christian fire practices, I explore the interplay between multivalence, multiplicity, and liminality in fire imagery. I demonstrate that deeper theological engagement with the image of fire can enhance participation, transformation, and reflection in transitional ritual experience. I argue that engaging with the multivalence of the image of fire could allow faith communities to move beyond dominant interpretive frameworks and apply the image within their own specific context. First, I orientate the discussion by examining the multivalence of biblical fire imagery and establishing the character of fire within the British social imagination. Second, I use critical observation of community fire practices in non-faith contexts to build a new contextual framework for the analysis of fire imagery. Finally, I apply my findings to a contextual analysis of existing Christian fire practices in Britain. Throughout, I argue that sensory and imaginative interaction with the image of fire provides a way to communicate and interact with theological ideas; experience personal and communal change; and mediate experience of the sacred.

Abstract:
Not since the 1966 World Cup has Britain experienced such an explicit collision of the most mega of sporting-events with the most ordinary of people, with these two phenomena coming into direct contact through the London 2012 Olympic Games. The award of the Games to London led me to begin a six year case study that focused on the relationship between the dominant forces and the people when power, space, finances, reputations and democracy itself are at stake during a Host Cities Olympiad. Whilst Government bodies have published quantitative reports on the economic effects of the Games on the Host Boroughs, and fellow researchers have tackled social issues arising from the Games, from social housing to local employment, this study attempts to report the overall 'experience' of specific members of the local communities affected by the Olympic Games. This collation of experience resulted in a series of short, experimental and feature films, which are discussed within this written thesis, which critically analyses the production of the films in the context of the most relevant existing theoretical frameworks. The project is a critique of ordinary people's experience of this mega-event, and the lessons drawn from this collection of experiences could go some way towards aiding both the International Olympic Committee and event planners in the UK in ensuring future mega-events result in real democratic progress.

Abstract:
The subject of this diploma thesis is to map the media presentation development of handicapped sportsmen in years 1992-2012. The thesis focuses on sportsmen media impression in journals Právo (also Rudé právo) and Sport (also Československý sport). The objective of this analysis is to find out, whether the impression of handicapped sportsmen corresponds with the impression of so-called normal sportsmen. The analytical part includes qualitative comparative analysis of articles about paralympic and olympic athletes at the time of Olympic and Paralympic Games. The thesis also analyse articles, that were published one week before or after the Games. The first chapter describes, how were handicapped sportsmen noted in newspaper in the past. As handicapped sportsmen are showed in media stereotypically, therefore there is a term deconstruction of representation and stereotypization as a part of theory behind this study. The framing analysis has its own chapter. The way, how texts about paralympic and olympic athletes are framed, is important for further analysis. That analysis forms six chapters. Every single chapter focuses on a single year, in which Olympic or Paralympic Games were held. Using the analysis of texts about the most successfull athletes leads to a comparison of those Games media...

Ribeiro, Emílio. "A Governança dos Jogos Olímpicos e Paralímpicos Rio2016." Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.26/21253.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract: The governance of the Olympic and Paralympic Games is a complex challenge for every host city. Considered the biggest sporting event in the world, the Games involve the participation of several representatives of the public and private sectors, in a process that requires coordinated actions and fast decision-making, strategic for compliance with obligations and deadlines with the International Olympic Committee. In Brazil, the Rio2016 Games demanded the creation of an exclusive legal structure to coordinate the interlocution between the three levels of government and the Organizing Committee. The Olympic Public Authority (APO) was inspired by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) model of the London 2012 Games, but with adaptations to the Brazilian reality. The consortium has integrated a broad governance structure, composed of diverse forums of decision-making power in different instances, as well as institutions created by government spheres to work exclusively on Olympic themes. This context signaled the difficulty of the fluid and agile implementation of a planning process that predicted effective and efficient interaction between the three levels of government. Thus, this paper aims to analyze the governance structure in the public sphere of preparation for the Rio2016 Games, from the victory of the Rio de Janeiro candidacy in 2009, to the delivery of the mega event in August 2016, to verify its usefulness and its impacts in carrying out the legal role of the APO. The methodological course began with a review of the literature on the subject, through the consultation of publications, documents, websites and national and foreign articles related to the Rio2016 Games. This step allowed a comprehensive and complete view of the governance structure adopted for the mega event. After the information was collected, a more detailed analysis model was constructed, and the dimensions and indicators to be analyzed were identified in order to achieve the objectives of the study investigation. The observation of the current reality at that time was enriched by interviews with members of the Rio2016 Games organization process. The questionnaire served to analyze the practical implementation of the theoretical models identified at the beginning of the investigation, in order to confirm the hypothesis of work. The research findings point to lessons learned and opportunities for improvement aimed at bridging the gaps identified in the governance structure adopted for the delivery of the Rio2016 Games, considering that the experience can be replicated in the organization of similar future projects involving the participation of the different levels of government.

Abstract:
Throughout the years virtual reality has been used for a wide range of applications, and several types of research have been made in order to improve its techniques and technology. In the last few years, the interest in virtual reality has been increasing partially due to the emergence of cheaper and more accessible hardware, and the increase in content available. One of the possible applications for virtual reality is to lead people into seeing situations from a different perspective, which can help change opinions. This thesis uses virtual reality to help people better understand paralympic sports by allowing them to experience the sports’ world from the athletes’ perspective. For the creation of the virtual environment, both computer-generated elements and 360 video are used. The integration of these two components presented a challenge to explore. This thesis focused on wheelchair basketball, and a simulator of this sport was created resorting to the use of a game engine (Unity 3D). For the development of this simulator, computer-generated elements were built, and the interaction with them implemented. Besides allowing the users to play the sport as if they are in the athlete’s shoes, users can also watch 360 videos in which explanations of the modality (rules and classification) are presented. They are also capable of interacting with some of these videos through virtual elements that are placed over the videos. User studies were conducted to evaluate the sense of presence, motion sickness and usability of the system developed. The results were positive although there are still some aspects that should be improved.

Abstract:
For the first time in history, the Olympic Games were postponed due to the dissemination of the new coronavirus, causing a physical and psychological impact on all involved, especially athletes. Within this context, it is essential to understand how Olympic and Paralympic athletes perceived and are dealt with this crisis. The current dissertation aimed to explore the experience of Portuguese Olympic and Paralympic athletes, through their perceptions and emotions (study I), as well as the coping strategies used to manage the impact of the lockdown and of the postponement of the Olympic Games 2020 (study II). Using a qualitative methodology, data were collected through semi-structured online interviews with 15 athletes (M = 29,9 ± 5,5 years) from both sexes (nmale = 9), including 13 Olympic athletes and two Paralympic athletes of various sports. A content analysis was performed in each study. Overall, our studies revealed that participants had multiple perceptions regarding the Olympic Games, their social and personal life, their physical and health conditions, and sports related areas, both on training and competition. Emotions referred comprise negative-toned and positive-toned. The negative-toned emotions were more expressive in the results, especially anxiety. The most used word to describe this event was adaptability. Athletes revealed to have used more coping strategies included in the appraisal-focused and approach coping styles, whereas the avoidance coping style was the least used. Adjusting to the constraints, looking for the positive side of negative events, negotiation, and acceptance revealed to be the most used coping strategies within this sample. The results reassure the individual, dynamic, and complex nature of athletes' experience. This one-time event created the opportunity to study the situation from the athletes' points of view. Findings can now be used to help other athletes and sports agents to prevent and deal with other stressful situations. These results highlight the importance of developing interventions directed at promoting coping strategies and social and personal competences in all athletes, regardless of their level of competition, as well as programmes that create awareness within other sports agents.

South Korea attended international swimming games for the first time in 1958 Tokyo Asian Games. In 1970 Bangkok Asian Games, South Korea won its first gold medal in swimming. Since then, elite swimming in South Korea has been developing quite fast, which can be demonstrated by Park Tae-Hwan’ swimming the first Olympic gold medal in 2008 for South Korea. The analysis of this study is based on the nine key factors of the success in elite sport of the west by De Bosscher et al (2006)., Semi-constructed interview and content analysis were conducted in order to investigate South Korea’s elite swimming development and the strategies behind. The result of this study is as follows. Although South Korea’s elite swimming development strategies have covered the nine key factors of elite sport success, certain problems still exist, such as lack of fund from the government, low willingness of athletes to stay in National Training Center due to the deficiency in the selection system, negligence on international games due to the over-concentration on domestic games for fulltime athletes, and difficulties for retired athletes to apply for government subsidy. The reasons above all have affected South Korea’s elite swimming performance. In order to elevate the national team’s capability, it is suggested that improvements for the future development of South Korea’s elite swimming should be made starting from aspects untouched before. Four suggestions accordingly are as follows. First, the funding portions for elite swimming development should be reallocated. Second, more attention should be paid to the career planning for retired athletes. Third, the funding for National Training Center can be shared with the training and other expenses for coaches and athletes to join competitions abroad. Forth, the National Training Center can be opened during summer and winter vacation for training.

Through sponsorship, the Olympic Games can not only help enterprises build positive images, increase their exposure and reputation but also unite them with Chinese citizens supportive of this international event. However, after paying for high-cost sponsorships and marketing, can enterprises enjoy better stock returns? And will they suffer from a relatively higher systematic risk value (β)? Focusing on sponsors of 2008 Olympic Games, this study divided sponsors by sponsorship types into TOP global sponsors of Olympic Games, sponsors of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and other sponsors. The research period spanned from Jun 1, 2006 to Mar 31, 2008. The empirical findings are as follows: 1. Through compilation of stock indexes, it could be observed that from Jun 1, 2006 to Mar 31 2008, sponsors of Olympic Games presented better stock price performance than the market (Dow Jones). In terms of stock price performance by sponsorship type, sponsors of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games ranked first, followed by other sponsors and TOP global sponsors of Olympic Games, where only TOP global sponsors of Olympic Games had lower stock price performance than the market. 2. From ANOVA multiple comparison, it could be discovered that (1) sponsorship level (amount) is not positively correlated with stock returns; (2) sponsors from the hosting nation, China, had significantly higher average daily return; (3) stocks of lower market values had significantly higher rates of return, and the size effect was present; (4) stocks of lower price earnings ratios (P/E ratio) had significantly lower rates of return; (5) stocks with lower earnings per share (EPS) had significantly higher rates of return; and (6) firms with a longer history would have significantly lower rates of return. 3. The systematic risks (β) of these Olympic Games sponsors were significantly smaller than 1 and greater than 0, indicating that the volatility of their stocks was smaller than that of the market and would move in the same direction with the market. Compared with the market, their stocks were portfolios with relatively lower risks (moderate and stable portfolios). According to capital asset pricing model (CAPM), higher systematic risks would lead to a relatively higher volatility, so risks taken by investors would be relatively higher than the expected returns. Among the three types of Olympic Games sponsors, TOP global sponsors with worldwide marketing platforms had the highest systematic risks and volatility. Sponsors of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, consisting of China’s state-run enterprises, had the most stable volatility and lowest systematic risks.

Asian female wrestlers have been doing well on international competitions in recent years, which indicates that study in women wrestling can be significant in Taiwan. Understanding and utilizing the rules can be important elements that help win a competition. Wrestling techniques have been analyzed and studied at different levels of competition, except for Olympic wrestling. Therefore, this study mainly focused on analyzing Female Freestyle Wrestling at the 2016 Rio Olympic Game: 1. Comparisons of effective points given by each play and effective scoring plays between different weight classes. 2. Comparisons of effective points given by each play and effective scoring plays between all periods. 3. Comparisons of effective points given by each play and effective scoring plays between preliminary matches and final matches. The research is based on 277 Female Freestyle Wrestling matches at the 2016 Rio Olympic Game, including 112 athletes, 209 preliminary matches, and 18 finals at all six weight classes. After analyzing points given and scoring plays by videos, research results showed that: 1. “two-point plays” have occurred the most at every weight class, and followed by “one-point penalties”. Generally, the distributions are not much different between every weight class. 2. The scoring patterns are similar in all periods. 3. The scoring patterns are similar in preliminary matches and finals; “two-point plays” occurred the most, and followed by “one-point penalties”. The research is done with the highest level of Olympic games’ technique analyze, and provides information for coaches and athletes’ reference.

The study is going to research for Chiang peng-lung integrated technical performances in present stage. We hope to find the overcoming strategy by using scientific ways, and collect the integrated analysis of enemies to provide the concrete tactical strategy. The research takes Chiang peng-lung, who stood for our country to be the table tennis training player in 2004 Olympic Game, as the target. And we collect Chiang peng-lung technical and tactics with other world excellent table tennis players in international games from 2001 to 2004. Based on table tennis fundamental technical characteristic, we could divide the main techniques into serve attack phase, receive attack phase, double cutting phase, pushing phase, and mutual attack phase. We watch the video to record every kind of technique form the table tennis record sheet. We calculate overall gaining and losing scores at first, and analyze by using the gray connection analysis. The results are: (1) Chiang peng-lung integrated technical performances in present stage: the highest scores in the item of serve attack phase are backhand side drive, forehand side drive, and forehand side service. But backhand side attacked ones lose more scores in the serve attack phase technique. Backhand side drive is also the item which loses scores easily. The highest scores in the item of receive attack phase are forehand side drive, backhand side push, and backhand side double cut. But backhand side receive attacked ones lose more scores in the receive attack phase technique. In the contentious phase, backhand side pushing phase gains more scores; backhand side pushing phase and forehand side pushing phase also lose much scores. (2) By gray connection analysis, we could find the technical items which affect the score performances in present games are backhand side backhand side (X2), forehand side backhand side (X1), backhand side receive attack phase (X4), backhand side double cutting phase (X6), forehand side double cutting phase (X5), backhand side pushing phase (X8), forehand side pushing phase (X7), backhand side mutual attack phase (X10), forehand side mutual attack phase (X9), and forehand side receive attack phase (X3). So we can know the actively performance of third board’s serve attack phase affects Chiang peng-lung game results a lot. We need to enhance and keep in a planned way. Performances on forehand side serve attack phase and mutual attack phase are not good. We have to make improve to break through the choke point. (3) The gray connection analysis on excellent players in the world can help us to understand how the technical items affect the performance. It can help Chiang peng-lung to compare with games and practices. (4) From the compound review analysis of Chiang peng-lung, we can find that Chiang peng-lung scores on serve attack phase, receive attack phase and contentious phase are lower than Liu cheng-min. Chiang peng-lung performances on the main compound skills didn’t elaborate his advantages, like serve attack phase and backhand side pushing phase. Through the connection analysis, we can know the game Chiang peng-lung was good at backhand side serve attack phase, backhand side receive attack phase, backhand side pushing phase, and forehand side pushing phase when he competed with Liu cheng-min in Olympic Game. So we can find that Chiang peng-lung try to improve the drawback of forehand side mutual attack phase before Olympic Game, but he didn’t perform well on forehand side receive attack phase and backhand side double cutting phase. It could be the reason that he lost.

Furthermore, a growing number of research studies that tackle the issue of the stock market in the developed country have newly appeared. However, few studies have been done regarding the effect that macroeconomic variables have on stock market index of China. In addition, there are only little studies discussing about the relationships among the major events and the stock market index of China. This research tries to shed more light on how the macroeconomic variables and major events influence the degree of the Shanghai stock market index. The sample data for this research consists of the listed macroeconomic variables in China from January 2000 to December 2008. Moreover, the following major events are selected as dummy variables: the Olympic Games, subprime mortgage, and the Great Sichuan Earthquake. With a multiple linear regression model, this research tends to investigate how the macroeconomic variables and major events are related to the stock index of Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE). In this research, the empirical results show that Consumer Price Index (CPI) has a significantly negative influence on all the stock indices of SSE. The Money Supply is positively related to the SSE-Real Estate Index, SSE-Utilities Index, and SSE- Conglomerates index. There is a negative relationship between the Interest Rate and SSE-Utilities Index. The Industrial Production Figures is confirmed in this research to be positively related to SSE-Industrial Index and SSE-Utilities Index. We also found that the Olympic Games year is positively related to all the SSE stock market indices. As a result the year of Olympic Games has enormous positive impacts on economic indicators of the host country. Additionally, subprime mortgage is negatively related to SSE-Commercial Index and SSE-Real Estate Index. This finding revealed that the subprime mortgage crisis has negatively affected individuals, investors, lenders, and economies worldwide. Moreover, the Great Sichuan Earthquake has negative relationships with both SSE-Industrial Index and SSE-Utilities Index.

A Study of Exercise Intensity on Volleyball Competition ――On accont of the Women Volleyball Players of 2001 World University Olympic Game―― Student:Tu-Nan Chou Advisor:Chu-Mao Lin,PRO Assist Advisor:Jung-Charng Lin,PH.D. Abstract This study adopts simulated formal volleyball game by using the Mix design two-way ANOVA , one-way ANOVA and K.Pearson correlation coefficient analysis to explore the change of blood lactate value and heart rate, we also to explore the correlation analysis between blood lactate, heart rate and rating of perceived exertion in order to conclude the exercise intensity of volleyball game. The results were in the following: 1. The comparison of blood lactate value during a volleyball game (1) The interaction between various players in various innings was not significant (p > .05), and the blood lactate value in each inning was significantly higher than when the players were rest. 2. The comparison of hart rate during a volleyball game (1) The interaction of HR between various and various innings was not significant (p > .05), and the HR stays in a relative stable situation. The HR of various position players was significantly different (p < .05). (2) The HR of all front row players was significantly higher than the HR of all the back row players (p < .05). And the HR of various position players stay in the front row and stay in the back one was significantly(p<.05). (3) The interaction between various position players and various heart beat intervals was significant (p < .05). Various position players and their heart beat interval distribution do not match in accordance (p < .05). The most frequent interval appears in the 131 — 150 beat/min one (p < .05). 3. The conclusive evaluation of the volleyball game exercise intensity (1) Measure the volleyball game exercise intensity as ‘Waek’ to ‘moderate’ according to the blood lactate value. (2) Measure the volleyball game exercise intensity as ‘moderate’ to ‘strong’ according to the HR.When applying to the volleyball game exercise intensity, the body sensed fatigue level was between ‘exhausted’ and ‘moderate’ according to the rating of perceived exertion. (3) There was accordance when applying the blood lactate value and Heart rate and rating of perceived exertion upon the evaluation of the volleyball game intensity. (4) The HR of various position players can reach about 65 — 75% of personal HRmax%. During the max exercise intensity the ratio will go up to 83 — 94%. The libero players always to stay at back row. So the HR can reach about 78 ~80% of personal HRMAX%. generally the intensity the players endure was about low to moderate level. Since the energy for volleyball exercise mainly comes from anaerobic energy supply system, enhancing the players’ exercise competence on account of anaerobic energy metabolism was the only way to improve the performance of the game. With the increasing popularity of virtual pets or icons recently, more and more enterprises and campaigns realize the immense marketing capacity of sales accompanied by cartoon figures and speak for their wide appeal. Besides, the businesses aimed at children have thus started to sell to adult markets because the sales have had a profound impact on adult consumers as well. Consumers’ empathy with cartoon figures cannot only help promote sales but also make the products even more competitive by means of popular preference to mascots. On account of this tendency, mascots have gradually gained general importance. Meanwhile, a great many CIS(corporation identification systems)have listed the development of mascots as an important identification of their business images. The first part of this study deals with qualification research by focus group. The researcher invited designers with master degrees in design to discuss the very definition of “personification” as well as summarize the most important steps in the process of designing mascots. The second part with quantification, taking specially-designed mascots of the Olympics for example, seeks to discover the factors in affecting the perception of facial formations of mascots in terms of visual arts expression. The study analyzes better preferred mascots and the relative conditions in designing them. The first outcome of this research is that for designers, the personification of an animal must focus on facial expressions, features, styles, accessories, personality backgrounds, and postures. The process relying on the designer’s aesthetics and capability manages to perfect the mascots. Second, based on the researched factors, all the interviewees were divided into five groups: general, male, female, with and without a designer’s background. Each group differs slightly in the cognition of personification, yet the overall similarities are significant. Finally, judging from the preferences to certain mascots, the most preferred ones closely resemble those least preferred. The more qualities fit the definition of personification, the better they are preferred. Men are much more apt to accept mascots with a sense of masculinity and a strong personality. The examiner with a designer’s background tends to be more likely to accept more abstract and unrealistic styles. This study attempts a preliminary analysis of mascots’ facial patterns, for the information of designers, enterprises, and campaigns in designing and developing desired mascots. It expresses a wish to contribute to improving preferences to designs for mascots.

My dissertation mainly focuses on the changing of China’s soft power and tries to explain the reasons why Beijing loses its biding for Olympic Games in 1993. China’s economic reforms have transformed its international status. Today China is already a country of rising power. In order to keep maintaining a peaceful international environment China has learnt to use soft issues to serve its national interests. Because changing China’s image and undermining the scenario of a China threat were vital to Beijing and crucial to the future of its foreign policy, the analysis concerning China’s rise should not focus entirely on the economic and military power. It is better for us to aim at filling that gap in knowledge about China’s soft power and its increasingly sophisticated diplomacy. According to Joseph Nye, soft power is attracting force derived mainly from intangible resources such as national culture, political values, and its foreign policies. It is the ability to get what you want through attraction rather than coercion or payments. Nye states that technological advances have led to a dramatic reduction in the cost of processing and transmitting information. The result is an explosion of information which leads to scarcity of attention. Therefore, attention becomes the scarce resource. Nye also finds that publics have become more wary and sensitized about propaganda. Governments are often mistrusted. Therefore, Nye suggests that governments to work with non-state actors, such as NGOs in international affairs. However, there are a lot of arguments about how to measure the soft power of a country or a private actor. Since converting resources into realized power in the sense of obtaining desired outcomes requires well-designed strategies and skillful leadership, I state that soft power results from the structural forces and media technology in the system. Through development of the analysis structure of soft power, including media technology, institution, and material resources, I examine several cases to prove that China is gradually enhancing its international position by means of changing its institutions and reinforcing its international communication abilities. Today, special events are more than just well-known athletic competitions and cultural performances. International Olympic Committee is an important non-state actor with charm and soft power in the international society. I use three chapters to deal with the topic that Beijing bided for 2000 and 2008 Olympic Game. My argument is that the issues of Deng Xiaoping’s successor and overheated economic problem leaded to China’s lost in biding for the Olympic Game in 1993.
