Abstract:
Abstract Oliver Goldsmith’s representation of two English gentlemen visiting a country house allegorizes Irish expatriate experience in She Stoops to Conquer. The play mocks a distinctive urban masculinity, the macaroni, by showing how ridiculous such fashionable characters become when removed from London. Resembling expatriates in this new, uncomfortable setting, the self-exiled gentlemen prompt Tony Lumpkin’s waggery, which is enhanced by Kate Hardcastle’s mockery of Marlow, her prospective husband. Goldsmith adapted elements of his plot from The Beaux Stratagem, a comedy by his Irish expatriate precursor George Farquhar, and he also incorporates autobiographical aspects of his Irish youth and recent English past. The laughter evoked by his fine gentlemen includes self-mockery, the result of Goldsmith’s double perspective on balancing the roles of outsider and insider, comic Irishman and fashionable Londoner.

Stevenin, Anne-Blanche. "Luc-Olivier Merson (1846-1920) : de la peinture d’histoire à la peinture décorative." Thesis, Paris 4, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA040268.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1869, when a student at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, Luc-Olivier Merson received the Rome Prize in history painting. The award allowed him to complete his training with four years of study in Italy. A well-known artist in his own time, Merson showed regularly at the Paris Salon before broadening the scope of his creative activity to include decorative painting and illustration. Beyond his taste for monumental painting, he evinced a keen interest in religious art, whose conventions he overturned, making use of recondite iconographic sources and unusual subjects. Suspended between Academism and Symbolism, Merson displayed a penchant for drawing, always privileging line, even as he maintained a subtle and refined sense of color. Having emerged from the shadow of his father, the art critic Olivier Merson, and endowed his work with a self-conscious archaism and idealism, Luc-Olivier Merson might justly be classed among the precursors of Symbolism. By studying the life and work of Merson, we may come to understand the aesthetic choices and the audacity of an artist too often—and too hastily—termed “Pompier” in twentieth-century art historiography

Belghith, Yosra. "Eco-extraction de biomolécules à haute valeur ajoutée à partir de grignons d’olive." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Avignon, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023AVIG0119.

Abstract:
Olive pomace is the main by-product generated through olive oil extraction. Although toxic to the environment, olive pomace is an important source of natural products beneficial to human health. Part of our work focuses on an ethanolic extract of pomace. UPLC/MSanalyses allowed us to identify 59 secondary metabolites, the most abundant of which are hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, oleuropein aglycone, oléoside, caffeic acid and p-coumaric acid. In addition, biological tests have shown that the ethanolic extract has antioxidant, anti-diabetic and analgesic activities. A second part based on the optimization of polyphenol extraction yields from olive pomace was carried out. This work led us to conclude that 60:40 EtOH: H2O was the best extraction solvent ratio and that “accelerated solvent extraction” was the best extraction process. In the last part, a new approach was developed to optimize the extraction of phenolic compounds using vegetable oils as extraction solvent. Based on a complete factorial design with three factors (type of oil, temperature and extraction technique), we have concluded that the optimal conditions for the extraction of polyphenols from pomace are as follows: extraction with olive oil at 65°C using ultrasound-assisted extraction

Abstract:
Abstract The stretch along the gulf from Pascagoula to Biloxi to Pass Christian to Bay St. Louis to Mulatto Bayou prepared me for New Orleans. Old French bungalows in shady thick gardens; the crosses and Catholic shrines; the shacks propped on stilts at the edge of the bays and bayous; the oyster shell roads bending into lush wildernesses where the tangled elephant-eared or lance-like plants showed all shades of green; cypress knees hunching swollen out of the muck; flowers delicately hued or like flame or startlingly white; sluggish bayous set in green frames; bearded water oaks and willows; straight long-leaf pines; palmettoes; the blue waters of the gulf, dazzling in the sunlight—all were fit settings for easy living Latins. The beauty of crepe-myrtles and magnolias belonged here, but so did the littered beaches, briny and tangy, smelling of fish at low tide. Old Spain was here— the hanging moss went by the name of “Spaniards beard,” and the yucca by the name of Spanish dagger. Old France was here in the houses, the cemeteries, and the people—Cajuns, Creole whites, Creole Negroes. It was hard to tell, looking at these olive, sloe-eyed brunettes, where one started and the other left off. The Indians had been here, leaving traces in the high cheek-bones and long, coarse, blue-black hair of many of the people, white and colored. But the Choctaws were gone; the grandsons of the Congo were here to stay.

Abstract:
Klavs S. Jensen of MIT showed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 470) that “batch” kinetics could be developed in flow by online IR analysis and continuous control. Professor Jensen also demonstrated (Org. Process Res. Dev. 2014, 18, 402) the continuous flow production of an active pharmaceutical product, the direct renin inhibitor aliskiren, over two steps and two crystallizations, starting from two advanced intermediates. Michael Werner and Rainer E. Martin of Hoffmann-La Roche AG Basel combined (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 1704) flow synthesis with a flow-based bioassay to develop structure–activity relationships for a series of β-secretase inhibitors. Carlos Mateos of Lilly S. A. and C. Oliver Kappe of the University of Graz used (J. Org. Chem. 2014, 79, 223) flow photolysis to promote the bromination of 1 to 2. Alessandro Palmieri of the University of Camerino and Stefano Protti of the University of Pavia added (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2014, 356, 753) the aldehyde 3 to the acceptor 4 to give, after in-flow reduction, the lactone 5. Peter H. Seeberger of the Max Planck Institute Mühlenberg showed (Org. Lett. 2014, 16, 1794) that the tumbling action of flow photolysis made the production of 7 by the unlinking of 6 from the polymer bead particularly efficient. Enzymes can also be used under flow conditions. Jörg Pietruszka of the Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf employed (Adv. Synth. Catal. 2014, 356, 1007) commercial laccase to prepare 10 by coupling 8 with 9. Gas–liquid mixing under flow conditions can also be effective. Núria López of ICIQ Catalonia and Javier Pérez-Ramírez of ETH Zurich developed (Chem. Eur J. 2014, 20, 5926) conditions for the selective hydrogenation of an alkyne 11 to the cis alkene 12. Jun-ichi Yoshida of Kyoto University trapped (Chem. Eur J. 2014, 20, 7931) the intermediate organolithium from 13 with CO₂ to give a carboxylate that was carried on to the purifiable O-Su ester 14, ready for further coupling. Timothy F. Jamison, also of MIT, prepared (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2014, 53, 3353) the amino phenol 17 by adding the chloromagnesium amide from 16 to the intermediate benzyne from 15, then oxidizing the product with air.

Puig, Francesc, Javier Dies, Manuel Sevilla, Joan de Pablo, Juan Jose´ Pueyo, Lourdes Miralles, and Aurora Marti´nez-Esparza. "Selection and Evaluation of Inner Material Canididates for Spanish Highlevel Radioactive Waste Canisters." In The 11th International Conference on Environmental Remediation and Radioactive Waste Management. ASMEDC, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icem2007-7178.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper summarizes the work carried out to analyse different alternatives related to the inner material selection of the Spanish high level waste canister for long term storage. The preliminary repository design considers granitic or clay formations, compacted bentonite sealing, corrosion allowing steel canisters and glass bead filling between the fuel assemblies and canister walls. This filling material will have the primary role of avoiding the possibility of a criticality event, which becomes an issue of major importance once the container is finally breached by corrosion and flooded by groundwater. In the first place, a complete set of requirements have been devised as evaluation criteria for candidate materials examination and selection; resulting in a compilation of demands significantly deeper and more exhaustive than any other similar work found in literature, including over 20 requirements and some other general aspects that could involve improvements in repository performance. Secondly, eight materials or material families (cast iron or steel, borosilicate glass, spinel, depleted uranium, dehydrated zeolites, hematite, phosphates and olivine) have been chosen and examined in detail, extracting some relevant conclusions. Either cast iron, borosilicate glass, spinel or depleted uranium are considered to look quite promising for the mentioned purpose.
