Concern over sediment toxicity has increased the need for toxicity test information with organisms that inhabit sediments. Oligochaetes are exposed to toxicants through feeding and direct body contact with aquatic sediments. Chronic testing with oligochaetes has historically focused on tubificids with test lengths of one year or more to encompass several generations. Most naidid oligochaetes have generation times of three to seven days and could provide chronic information in a matter of weeks. <p>The effects of grazing by the small oligochaete, Aeolosoma, on periphyton assemblages of different algal composition and on unconditioned detritus were examined. Natural water and periphyton inoculum were collected from a littoral environment and used to construct laboratory microcosms. Changes in algal community composition, microbial respiration, and structural indices (Chlorophyll a, protein, and carbohydrate) were measured in grazed and ungrazed cultures through time in 2 to 12 d experiments.</p> <p> Grazed cultures after 10 to 12 d had dissimilar algal community compositions

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar, por meio de testes ecotoxicológicos, as influências de três inseticidas e dois fungicidas em Eisenia andrei (Oligochaeta), e Folsomia candida (Collembola), seguindo-se padrões ISO e OECD. Foram investigados os inseticidas fipronil, thiametoxam e imidacloprid, e os fungicidas captan e carboxin + thiram. Observaram-se mortalidades significativas de F. candida, ao fim de 14 dias, para todas as substâncias químicas avaliadas. Considerados tóxicos, imidacloprid e fipronil apresentaram LC50 de 20,96 e 59,62 mg de ingrediente ativo/kg de solo seco, respectivamente

The phylogeny of the Piscicolidae was analyzed from combined sequence data of 18S rDNA, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (CO-I), nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase subunit I (ND-I), and morphological data using parsimony. A worldwide distribution of Pisciolidae was represented for the first time in a phylogenetic analysis. While the family Piscicolidae was supported as a monophyletic group, the traditional subfamilies based on morphology were not supported.
