Abstract:
This paper analyzes Okun?s Law for Spain using regional data. The results confirm a very high Okun coefficient for Spain, with a high degree of regional heterogeneity. Furthermore, we find that panel data techniques provide notably more stable estimates than time series techniques applied to the same regional data. Finally, the results reveal a remarkable degree of regional heterogeneity in cyclical asymmetry in Okun?s Law for the Spanish case.

In this paper I use a New Keynesian model with unemployment and estimate it for the Romanian economy using Bayesian techniques. I use the estimated model to derive an estimation of the Okun coefficient. I alternatively estimate the Okun coefficient using the Bayesian linear regression. The results show that the Okun coefficient is high in the Romanian economy implying that the current crisis will have a severe impact on the labour market as well as important social effects.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The current article analyzes the validity of Okun?s Law and sizable distortions that can occur in the estimation when spatial dependence and cyclical asymmetric impacts are not considered, which is a concern commonly ignored by the existing literature. Primarily spatial panel regressions (SDM, SAR, and SEM) and nonparametric regressions along with specification tests are adopted in terms of the methodology (such as panel unit root tests, panel cointegration, Moran?s I and Geary?s C tests of global spatial dependence, spatial LM, and Hausman tests). Additionally, spatial heterogeneity and cross-regional variation in Okun?s Law are investigated by adopting geographically weighted regression, LISA (local indicators for spatial association), and local Geary?s C analysis. A panel of 26 Turkish NUTS-2 regions from 2004 to 2018 was analyzed. The results clearly revealed that failing to incorporate spatial proximity and asymmetric cycle impacts leads to the biased estimation of Okun?s coefficient, such that during the downswing years of the national economy, Okun?s Law holds robustly: unemployment increases quickly in response to a decline in output. In contrast, during upswing years, the size of Okun?s coefficient is relatively much lower. Moreover, spatial dependence and heterogeneity are sizably evident. Okun?s coefficient is demonstrated to vary significantly across regions that have different industrial and labor market characteristics. As a policy implication, it has been understood that the reduction of unemployment is more difficult than initially understood, as economic growth itself does not provide a solution during upswing periods. The necessary special and region-specific policies are discussed throughout the text.

Abstract:
The concept of a negative relationship between economic growth (Gross Domestic Product) and unemployment rate is known as Okun's law (Okun's Law) or the Okun coefficient. The application of Okun's law in Indonesia uses time series data from 1999 to 2013. The method used is the difference version of Okun's law to gain Okun coefficient and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) analysis to obtain the regression coefficients. In a macro-economic framework, Okun's law states that if the GDP grows at 2.5% above the trend, which has been achieved in a given year, the unemployment rate will fall by 1 %. From various studies conducted by several researchers can be seen that the Okun coefficient in each different country. In Indonesia, the scientific literature that specifically raised the Okun's law does not available, so the study aims to look at how the application of Okun's law in Indonesia The results showed that Okun's law applies in Indonesia, where the Okun coefficient is negative. The unemployment rate tends to increase in line with GDP growth reached.

Cephalic index is an important feature that characterizes different races. The study aimed at comparing the cephalic indices between the two genders and to determine the stature among Okun and Ebira ethnic groups in Nigeria. The subjects were measured for cephalic length, breadth and subject height and the cephalic indices were calculated by dividing the cephalic breadth by cephalic length, and then multiply by 100. 844 subjects of Okun and Ebira origin of Kogi state were measured, 211 males and 211 females for each tribe were measured. Fischer’s formula was used to determine the sample size because the population size is > 10,000. The cephalic breadth and length was measured using a spreading caliper and the subject height was measured with a stadiometer. The data was analyzed using Pearson’s Chisquare analysis test for association, trends and distribution difference of the pattern (confidence level at 95%). The mean cephalic indices of both Okun and Ebira ethnic group were >75 and >70 which belongs to mesocephalic and doliocephalic group respectively. There were significant differences in cephalic indices between both ethnic groups (p<0.001). There was no significant difference in cephalic indices between males and females of each ethnic group. Stature was better predicted from cephalic indices for Ebira males (r= 0.386) when compared to the Ebira females (r= 0.127), Okun males (r= 0.296) and Okun females (r = 0.268). All predictions were significant except for Ebira females. Keywords: mesocephalic, doliocephalic, cephalic indices, stature, sex

Abstract:
Abstract The relationship between unemployment and economic growth is known as Okun´s Law. Okun´s Law is used to estimate the reaction of unemployment rate on change in GDP growth. The purpose of this paper is therefore to examine the possibly asymmetric relationship between changes in output and gender specific unemployment rates by estimating Okun´s coefficients for all countries of the EU, as well as for selected groups of the EU countries. These groups include countries with similar characteristics that differ from other groups and represent the diversity among the EU. The results confirm that male unemployment is more sensitive to changes in GDP than the unemployment of females. Furthermore, findings differ on the country´s specifics with higher sensitivity in countries with lower economic performance.

Abstract:
In a seminal paper, Okun (1962) investigated the relationship between potential GNP and levels of unemployment in order to identify the loss of national output due to unemployment. From this investigation, a significant macroeconomic relationship was established which received the name Okuns Law. According to Okuns Law, each percentage point of unemployment above 4 percent of the labor force implies a 3 percent gap of foregone potential output. The original study used quarterly data from 1947 to 1960 and employed ordinary least-squares analysis as its primary statistical method. Since Okuns (1962) original work, several studies appears investigating the same issue and extending the original scope. Here we do not intent to survey the literature on Okuns Law; a good summary of the various studies may be found in Tatom (1978). Instead, what we propose to do is first, to replicate Okuns model for the period 1948-1979 and second, and more importantly, to use a superior econometric technique, namely Cochran-Orcutt regression analysis. This technique requires autocorrelation and allows for a better appraisal of the output-unemployment relationship in Okuns original structural equations.

Abstract:
The objective of this work is to analyze the existing relation between employment, unemployment and production, by means of the estimation of the Okun coefficient for thePeruvian Economy. A previous step consists in the estimation of the employment-productionelasticity. Both parameters are important elements for macroeconomic policy design, and theevaluation of its effects on employment and welfare. Based on a cointegration analysis we find a positive long-term relation between the employment rate and Lima's GDP throughout the period, where the employment rate rises in 0.0288 percentage points for a rise of 1000 nuevos soles of1979. We also estimate an Okun coefficient of 0.0845, its low value is only comparable withthose of Japan, Bolivia and Argentina. In Peru's case, the reason for this low coefficient can befound in the procyclical behavior of the labor force, and in the fact that workers retire from thelabor market when they lose their post. We also find that the rate of growth of the GDP must beat least of 3.31% in order to keep the unemployment rate from rising, and of about 11% to lowerthe unemployment rate in one point. Finally, we estimate recursive Okun coefficients based onthe cyclical components of the series, which gives us a range between 0.02 and 0.12 for thewhole period.

Abstract:
One of the most obtrusive features of Yoruba studies has been its clear pattern of regional preferences and biases in its scholarship. This pattern is reflected in the present concentration of studies on the southwest, the northwest, the central subgroups of Ife, Owo, Ijesha, Egba, Ijebu, Oyo, and Ilorin on one hand, and the paucity of works on the northeast and southeast subgroups of the O-okun Yoruba, the Igbomina, the Ikale and the Ilaje on the other. There is no other subgroup where this particularistic trend in Yoruba studies and especially, art historiography can better be observed than with the scholarly neglect of the O-okun peoples, the most northeasterly of the Yoruba subgroups. An important goal of this thesis is to foreground the multi-culturalistic tendencies among the Yoruba and underscore the necessity to provide comparable scholarly attention to neglected subgroups, the O-okun peoples in particular.

Okun´s law describes the empirical observation first made by Arthur Okun relating changes in an economy’s unemployment rate to changes in output. Where many earlier research papers since then focus on comparisons between countries, this paper attempts to assess whether Okun’s law is demonstrated in the five Nordic countries and analyse the relationship between unemployment and output in welfare states. The results show a significant statistical relationship and hopefully present an interesting opportunity for further research.

Abstract:
The Okun’s Law has been frequently addressed in macroeconomic studies around the world, mostly in national levels, with few studies that estimate the relationship at regional level. This work, using 2002q1-2014q3 quarterly data, estimated the Okun coefficients for Brazil and for the metropolitan areas of Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre and Sao Paulo. The conclusion is that Okun’s Law is valid in Brazil and in one of the three metropolitan regions studied, and there are regional differences in the responsiveness of labor markets to output fluctuations and deviations from their long-term levels, which, according to the literature, implies the need to implement unemployment policies that not only meet the regional disparities in the labor market, but also the elasticity of the labor market to changes in economic activity in each location.

Abstract:
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior
This work aims to empirically verify the Okun's Law (1962), negative relationship between macroeconomic variables of product and unemployment, for the Brazilian economy in the period stretching from the second quarter of 2002 to the first quarter of 2015. The data used is the data available at the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), for quarterly GDP of the Brazilian economy and data of the quarterly total unemployment rate and by gender of the workforce, collected by the Pesquisa Mensal do Emprego (PME), carried out by IBGE, to the metropolitan areas of Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Porto Alegre. In order to verify the econometric Okun s relationship, the study relies on gap models, via Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), and these models consider that the first difference of the unemployment rate is negatively dependent on the output gap. The results confirm the Okun s relationship in the analyzed period, with coefficients values of 0.09, when considering the overall national unemployment, of 0.09 for male unemployment and 0.11 for female unemployment. These results are comparable to Ball et al. (2013), for the total unemployment model and Hutengs and Stadtmann (2014), for models considering the employee's gender. The coefficients allow us to infer that women are more sensitive to economic fluctuations than men, indicating that the inclusion of both occurs differently in the labor market.

Abstract:

Youth unemployment levels registered in the EU, during and after the international economic crisis, generated major concerns at a national and international level or social level or the economic level. This essay addresses youth unemployment with a macroeconomic perspective, relating the increase in youth unemployment rates in European countries with the GDP slowdown or fall. We estimated Okun's Law for youth unemployment and total unemployment in the EU-25 and 14 other countries, in time periods not inferior to 15 years, beginning before the crisis and ending in 2015. It is possible to confirm an inverse relationship between the annual chage in GDP and annual change in youth unemployment rate, as well as with the annual change in the overall unemployment rate. It also concludes that youngesters are more exposed to external shocks.

Abstract:
In this article, we will cover the main anti-Keynesian views and macroeconomic systems that arose in the post Keynes period as well as their fiscal and monetary policy guidelines. As is known, the early Classical economists introduced a macroeconomic system based on the Quantity Theory and Say’s Law resulting in automatic full-employment equilibrium; and finally after 1929-1934 Great World Depression, the Keynesian System was introduced as a “revolution” (Keynesian Revolution) in theory and practice. As a result of the Keynesian policies implemented, European countries and the United States not only got over the Great World Depression but also in the years following the World War II, they have observed a fast and stable growth for a long time. Moreover, cyclical fluctuations have been controlled to a great extent. Even so, at the stage when the Keynesian System was introduced, anti-Keynesian views and macroeconomic systems were immediately introduced. Intense academic discussions between advocates of these views and the Keynesian economists have continued up until today. Meanwhile, many economists such as J.R. Hicks, R.F. Harrod, N. Kaldor, M. Kalesci, A.W. Philips, A. Hansen, P.A. Samuelson, E. Domar, J. Tobin, R. Solow, A.M. Okun, W. Helier, G. Ackler, F. Modigliani, and R. Musgrave and many others have developed and defended the Keynesian System from different aspects. We can characterize significant anti-Keynesian views and macroeconomic systems as the “Counter-Revolution”.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Fontanari, Claudia, Antonella Palumbo, and Chiara Salvatori. The Updated Okun Method for Estimation of Potential Output with Broad Measures of Labor Underutilization: An Empirical Analysis. Institute for New Economic ThinkingInstitute for New Economic Thinking Working Paper Series, April 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36687/inetwp158.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper extends to different indicators of labor underutilization the Updated Okun Method (UOM) for estimation of potential output proposed in Fontanari et al (2020), which, from a demand-led growth perspective, regards potential output as an empirical approximation to full-employment output, as in A.M.Okun’s (1962) original method. Based on the apparent incapability of the official rate of unemployment to fully account for labor underutilization, in this paper we offer estimates of Okun’s law both with broad unemployment indicators and with an indicator of ‘standardized hours worked’ which we propose as a novel measure of the labor input. The paper reflects on the possible different empirical measures of full employment. The various measures of potential output that we extract from our analysis show greater output gaps than those produced by standard methods, thus highlighting a systematic tendency of the latter to underestimate potential output. Output gaps that underestimate the size of the output loss or that tend to close too soon during recovery, may produce a bias towards untimely restriction.
