Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the validation of the Organizational Justice Index (OJI) by Hoy and Tarter (2004), a self-report questionnaire for teachers’ perceptions of fairness in the operation and administration of schools. Design/methodology/approach – In two studies the authors validated the Italian version of the OJI. Study 1 included 164 Italian high school teachers (76.8 percent were female) to test structure and construct validity. Study 2 involved 200 teachers (permanent and temporary teachers) to confirm the structure of the scale, test the construct and criterion validity, and invariance. Findings – Confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the one-factor solution and that the structure of the scale was the same across teachers. Results revealed high internal reliability. The OJI correlated positively with equity, school climate, and job satisfaction, and negatively with depression and burnout. Research limitations/implications – Since the research approach could lead to common method variance issues, it will be important to determine the associations of OJI with non-self-report assessments. Practical implications – The OJI can be applied optimally to: assess potential organizational problems prior to conducting major interventions; investigate school dynamic problems; target interventions designed to enhance perception of organizational justice; incorporate evaluation of organizational justice as part of regular employee assessments. Originality/value – Overall findings fill the need of standardized measures of organizational justice for specific context. The OJI is a valid instrument to measure organizational justice in school, involving different type of teachers.

Abstract:
Identification of the sibling species of the blackfly, S. damnosum complex using their polytene chromosomal banding patterns in Oji river system was carried out with the aim of accurately identifying the particular sibling species of S. damnosum complex involved in the transmission of onchocerciasis in Oji-river LGA and environ. Simulium damnosum complex larvae were collected monthly in forty eight (48) breeding sites in four sampling units for three years in the Oji river system in wet and dry seasons. Collected larvae were preserved in cold Carnoy’s solution prior to processing. Salivary gland chromosomes were extracted, processed and analyzed microscopically for polytene chromosomal banding patterns. Three sibling species of Simulium damnosum complex that breed in the Oji river system were identified in varying degrees. They included S. squamosum, S. yahense and S. damnosum sensu stricto (s.s.). Variation in the occurrence of the sibling species was statistically significant. Dry and wet season catches for all the sibling species in the sampling units were found to differ statistically. The identified sibling species of S. damnosum complex are known to be vectors of Onchocerca volvulus, the causative agent of onchocerciasis, a disease highly prevalent in Oji-river LGA and environ.

Abstract:
The prevalence of youth-onset type 2 diabetes (T2D) is rapidly increasing worldwide, disproportionately affecting Indigenous youth with Oji-Cree heritage from central Canada. Candidate gene screening has uncovered a novel and private polymorphism in the Oji-Cree population in the hepatocyte nuclear factor-1 alpha (HNF-1α) gene, where a highly conserved glycine residue at position 319 is changed to a serine (termed HNF-1αG319S or simply G319S). Oji-Cree youth who carry one or two copies of the “S-allele” present at diagnosis with less obesity, reduced indicators of insulin resistance, and lower plasma insulin levels at diagnosis, suggestive of a primary defect in the insulin-secreting β cells. Few studies on the impact of the HNF-1αG319S variant on β cell function have been performed to date; however, much can be learned from other clinical phenotypes of HNF-1α-deficiency, including HNF-1α mutations that cause maturity-onset diabetes of the young 3 (MODY3). In addition, evaluation of Hnf-1α-deficient murine models reveals that HNF-1α plays a central role in the regulation of insulin secretion by regulating the expression of key genes involved in β cell glucose-sensing, mitochondrial function, and the maintenance of the β cell phenotype in differentiated β cells. The overall goal of this minireview is to explore the impact of HNF-1α-deficiency on the β cell to better inform future research into the mechanisms of β cell dysfunction in Oji-Cree youth with T2D.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Among the Oji-Cree of northern Ontario, we previously identified a novel variant in the HNF1A gene, namely G319S, that was strongly associated with type 2 diabetes. However, the majority of subjects with diabetes did not have the HNF1A S319 variant, suggesting that there might be other genetic determinants of diabetes susceptibility. In the course of sequencing candidate genes in diabetic subjects who were homozygous for HNF1A G319/G319, we found that some of them had the PPARG A12 variant. After genotyping PPARG in the entire adult Oji-Cree population, we found that: 1) PPARG A12 was strongly associated with type 2 diabetes in women, but not men; 2) among women, the odds of being affected for carriers of PPARG A12 compared with noncarriers was 2.3 (95% confidence interval, 1.4–3.8); and 3) among women, affected carriers of PPARG A12 had a significantly earlier age-of-onset and/or age-at-diagnosis compared with noncarriers. When taken together with the previously reported association of diabetes with HNF1A in both men and women, the gender-specific association with PPARG A12 confirms that type 2 diabetes is etiologically complex in the Oji-Cree and that at least two genes are involved in determining susceptibility to the disease in these people.

Abstract:
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is classically viewed as a disease of adults caused by poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and obesity. However, with increasing awareness of the heterogeneity of T2DM, new risk factors are being identified that add complexity. Some of these new risk factors have been identified in Canadian people with Aboriginal Oji-Cree heritage, a group that demonstrates one of the highest rates of T2DM in the world. This high prevalence may be due to the rapid change, over the past 50 years, away from their traditional way of life on the land. Another environmental change is the increased rate of pregnancies complicated by obesity, gestational diabetes, or T2DM, resulting in more children being exposed to an abnormal intrauterine environment. Furthermore, the Oji-Cree of central Canada possesses the unique HNF-1αG319S polymorphism associated with reduced insulin secretion. We propose that intrauterine exposure to maternal obesity and T2DM, associated with the HNF-1αG319S polymorphism, results in fetal programming that accelerates the progression of early-onset T2DM. This paper describes the evolution of T2DM in children with a focus on the Oji-Cree people over the past 25 years and the unique prenatal and postnatal gene-environment interaction causing early-onset T2DM.

Abstract:
A total of 556 individuals in Agbalenyi Community of Oji-River local government area of Enugu State, Nigeria were studied using questionnaires, focus group discussions and key informant interviews to determine the socio-cultural factors affecting the transmission of onchocerciasis. The result revealed a low level of knowledge about the cause, prevention and complications of onchocerciasis. Respondents have developed a cultural system around the disease due to long exposure. The majority are aware of the disease which they recognize once their body starts itching or musculoskeletal pain develops but only 64·4, 34·0, 1·4 and 3·6%, respectively attributed chronic itching, nodules, bad vision and leopard skin to blackfly bite. Other perceived causes mentioned include ageing, the type of food eaten, farm work and ‘bad blood’. Only 0·8% knew diagnosis could be made through skin snips. Neither Oji-River nor any of the river systems were associated with any of the complications of onchocerciasis. Significant differences in most socio-demographic characteristics were associated with differences in the level of knowledge about the disease.
