Abstract:
Abstract This work examines the cellular pathophysiology associated with the weakened bone matrix found in a murine model of osteogenesis imperfecta murine (oim). Histomorphometric analysis of oim/oim bone showed significantly diminished bone mass, and the osteoblast and osteoclast histomorphometric parameters were increased in the oim/oim mice, compared with wild-type (+/+) mice. To assess osteoblast activity, a rat Col1a1 promoter linked to the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase reporter transgene was bred into the oim model. At 8 d and 1 month of age, no difference in transgene activity between oim and control mice was observed. However, at 3 months of age, chloramphenicol acetyl transferase activity was elevated in oim/oim;Tg/Tg, compared with +/+;Tg/Tg and oim/+;Tg/Tg. High levels of urinary pyridinoline crosslinks in the oim/oim;Tg/Tg mice were present at all ages, reflecting continuing high bone resorption. Our data portray a state of ineffective osteogenesis in which the mutant mouse never accumulates a normal quantity of bone matrix. However, it is only after the completion of the rapid growth phase that the high activity of the oim/oim osteoblast can compensate for the high rate of bone resorption. This relationship between bone formation and resorption may explain why the severity of osteogenesis imperfecta decreases after puberty is completed. The ability to quantify high bone turnover and advantages of using a transgene that reflects osteoblast lineage activity make this a useful model for studying interventions designed to improve the bone strength in osteogenesis imperfecta.

Abstract:
In Germany, employers are obliged to offer “operational integration management” (OIM) services to employees returning from long-term sick leave. OIM aims to improve employees’ workability and to prevent future sick leave or early retirement. This study examined (i) to what extent OIM services are offered to eligible employees, (ii) to what extent offers are accepted and (iii) the determinants of both outcomes. We used data from a cohort of employees eligible for OIM. Thirty-four potential determinants were assessed in 2013 (i.e., the baseline) using participant reports. In 2015 (i.e., the follow-up), participants were asked (a) whether they had ever been offered OIM services by their employer, and (b) whether they had accepted that offer (i.e., the outcomes). We estimated relative risks by multivariable binomial regression to identify predictors based on backward elimination. In total, 36.0% of the participants were offered OIM services and 77.2% of them accepted that offer. The likelihood of an OIM offer at follow-up was elevated in participants with mental impairment, cancer or long-term absenteeism and increased with organizational justice, neuroticism, and company size. The likelihood of accepting that OIM offer was positively associated with mental impairment and decreased with increasing company size.

Abstract:
While orientation imaging microscopy (OIM) via automatic analysis of electron backscatter diffraction patterns (EBSPs) has become routine, methods for analyzing results obtained by OIM are still maturing. Interrogating the OIM data to distinguish between deformed, recovered and recrystallized material in a polycrystalline sample is one example. An advantage for using OIM data in such a case is that the corresponding textures can also be determined providing more information regarding these processes. This work reports on two different approaches for distinguishing between these structures from OIM data on a sample of partially recrystallized low-alloy steel. The first approach is, in a sense, patterned after that used in optical microscopy; where, deformed material can be identified because it is more deeply etched than recrystallized material. A similar approach Can be used in OIM by considering the quality of EBSPs. EBSPs from deformed material are more diffuse than patterns obtained from recovered or recrystallized material. At each measurement point in an OIM scan an image quality (IQ) parameter is determined for the corresponding EBSP. The IQ is mapped onto a gray scale and an image is formed from the OIM data as shown in Fig. 1. In this image the measurement points are shaded so that points with associated EBSPs of high IQ receive a lighter shade of gray than points with a lower IQ. The deformed regions can then be identified by the darker regions in the OIM map. However, this method has some drawbacks. The first is that the IQ parameter is not sensitive enough to distinguish recovered material from recrystallized material.

Abstract:
Using the new method known as Orientation Imaging Microscopy (OIM), characterization of mesoscale aspect of the internal structure of polycrystalline materials in the two-dimensional section plane has become routine. However, in some applications which primarily focus either on the characterization of interface types or on their connectivity, OIM is rather inefficient since only the scan points that lie adjacent to the interfaces are used to determine interface character. When the OIM grid spacing is dictated by the precision with which the interfacial in-plane inclination must be determined in the section plane, the efficiency with which conventional OIM can harvest interfacial data is rather poor.In this paper a new approach and system of microscopy is described, called the Mesoscale Interface Mapping System (MIMS). MIMS overcomes the challenges associated with OIM by directing the beam to the vicinity of interfaces which have been identified by a microstructural contrast image.

Abstract:
The collagen molecule, which is the building block of collagen fibrils, is a triple helix of two α1(I) chains and one α2(I) chain. However, in the severe mouse model of osteogenesis imperfecta (OIM), deletion of the COL1A2 gene results in the substitution of the α2(I) chain by one α1(I) chain. As this substitution severely impairs the structure and mechanics of collagen-rich tissues at the tissue and organ level, the main aim of this study was to investigate how the structure and mechanics are altered in OIM collagen fibrils. Comparing results from atomic force microscopy imaging and cantilever-based nanoindentation on collagen fibrils from OIM and wild-type (WT) animals, we found a 33% lower indentation modulus in OIM when air-dried (bound water present) and an almost fivefold higher indentation modulus in OIM collagen fibrils when fully hydrated (bound and unbound water present) in phosphate-buffered saline solution (PBS) compared with WT collagen fibrils. These mechanical changes were accompanied by an impaired swelling upon hydration within PBS. Our experimental and atomistic simulation results show how the structure and mechanics are altered at the individual collagen fibril level as a result of collagen gene mutation in OIM. We envisage that the combination of experimental and modelling approaches could allow mechanical phenotyping at the collagen fibril level of virtually any alteration of collagen structure or chemistry.

Abstract:
Introduction. We report a case of ossification of the interosseous membrane (OIM) of the leg in a football player who had no history of severe local traumas. A review of the literature of the OIM of the leg in athletes was also carried out.Case Report. A 38-year-old Caucasian male patient complained of pain on lateral aspect of the leg when playing football. Pain progressively worsened until he had to stop the sporting activity. Radiographs, and then CT and MRI, showed OIM in the middle third of the left leg. MRI showed inflammation of tibia periosteum and bone adjacent to the ossification, which was then excised. Two months after surgery the patient returned to play football.Conclusion. A thorough analysis of the literature revealed three types of OIM of the leg in athletes. Type I usually occurs after a syndesmosis ankle sprain, Type II appears to result from a tibia fracture, and Type III, of which only one fully recorded case has been published, is probably caused, as in our patient, by repetitive minor traumas to the leg. Awareness of the existence of Type III OIM can avoid erroneous diagnoses leading to useless investigations and treatments.

Abstract:
Mice harboring the Col1a2 oim mutation ( oim) express dentinogenesis imperfecta. To determine the effect of Col1a2 genotype on tissue mechanical properties, we compared Young’s modulus and hardness of dentin in the 3 Col1a2 genotypes. Upper incisors were tested by nanoindentation. Genotype had a significant effect on Young’s modulus, but there was not a simple mutant allele dosage relationship. The effect of genotype on hardness did not reach significance. Hardness and Young’s modulus were greater near the dento-enamel junction than near the pulp chamber. Greater hardness and Young’s modulus values near the dento-enamel junction reflected continued mineralization of the dentin following its initial synthesis. Analysis showed the mechanical data to be consistent with Fourier transform infrared and backscattered electron microscopy studies that revealed increased mineralization in oim bone. Analysis of the data suggests that clinical fragility of teeth in oim mice is not due to deficiencies of hardness or Young’s modulus, but may be due to defects in post-yield behavior or resistance to fatigue damage.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how environmental design features of a green building contribute to the formation of employees’ organization image (OIM) through better environmental awareness (EAW) within employees. Design/methodology/approach Based on a comprehensive literature review on environmental design features of a building, a theoretical model was proposed for investigation. Three putative paths linking workspace (WSP) to EAW, departmental space (DSP) to EAW and EAW to OIM were then tested relying on a survey data of 362 employees collected from three Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified buildings by using structural equation modeling methodology as prescribed by Hair et al. Findings Significant evidence was found in support of all three purposed paths. Further, the study found that workspace and the DSP together explained around 46 percent of the variance in employee’s EAW, which then explained around 54 percent of the variance in the formation of the employees’ OIM. Research limitations/implications The study drew data only from green certified organizations. Future research should involve other green organizations or a larger sample of green buildings. The size and character of the sample were restricted by organizational constraints. Practical implications The organizations need to be extremely cautious of green concerns during the design phase in order to capitalize on the yields of better employees’ OIM. It also motivates the other organizational group toward the green building concept to increase the employees’ EAW and to enhance organizational values and image. Originality/value While the green concept has been a significant research topic for more than decades, barely any research has been conducted that focuses specifically on environmental design features of a green building on employees’ EAW and OIM. This study tries to make a link between green building design features with employees’ EAW and OIM. These links are rare in Indian perspective.

Abstract:
Although there is a considerable amount of research on market orientation, research on this concept in the context of born global firms is still lacking a precise definition and full operationalization. This research aims to investigate how the market orientation (MO) concept could be understood for a specific type of firm: the born global firm. The thesis is framed around three studies. First, an exploratory study that was developed by performing qualitative interviews in a sample of five Spanish firms from different sectors which had international activity. The data were analyzed using cross-case analysis. The results suggests that the market orientation concept should be developed into the concept of orientation towards international markets (OIM) for born global firms. It also provides the components for measuring this orientation in this type of firm. Second, using samples of born global firms from the Nordic countries and Spain, we assess the dimensionality of OIM by considering the optimal number of scale items, with the exception of the network construct, and assess the measurement invariance of the construct across the samples. The results support the conceptualization of OIM as a multidimensional construct, using customer orientation, competitor orientation, interfunctional coordination, and innovativeness and technological capability. Measurement invariance was assessed using multi-group confirmatory factor analysis. The factors outlined above have a similar dimensionality and factor structure across countries. Finally the third study, examines how the extended concept of market orientation for born global firms that we have called OIM affects business performance, as measured by customer performance and financial performance, in the context of born global firms, and whether this effect varies between countries. The results show that the OIM components have a positive and significant effect on business performance in born global firms in both contexts (Nordic and Spanish companies) through customer and financial performance. Based on these research findings, the thesis’s main theoretical contribution is the suggestion of how MO should be conceptualized for BG firms. Our findings provide evidence that it is necessary to incorporate components that relate to the international scope of this type of firm, with the concept of OIM. From a business practice perspective, this dissertation suggested that the scale we have developed can provide a reliable and valid analytical tool for assessing the orientation towards international markets of these firms. Thus born global managers may adopt the scale for a better understanding of the reality of foreign markets and to develop effective strategies to attract and retain customers in different markets overseas.

Full text
Abstract:
Flash processing is a new heat treatment process being developed to produce steel with relatively high strength and ductility. It involves rapidly heating steel sheet or strip to a temperature in the austenite range and quenching; the entire thermal cycle takes place within 15 seconds. The resulting microstructure is fine and difficult to resolve using standard metallographic techniques. In this investigation, electron backscatter diffraction was used to measure the grain size, grain orientations, and phase fractions in AISI 8620 samples flash processed to a series of different maximum temperatures. The combination of high strength with moderate ductility obtained by flash processing arises from a refined martensitic microstructure. The morphology of the microstructure depends upon the maximum processing temperature; a lower maximum temperature appears to produce a finer prior austenite grain size and an equiaxed martensite structure whereas a higher maximum processing temperature yields a more conventional lath martensite morphology.

Abstract:
Microstructure changes that occur during the deformation and heat treatments involved in wrought processing of metals are of central importance in achieving the desired properties or performance characteristics in the finished products. However, thorough understanding of the evolution of microstructure during thermo-mechanical processing of metallic materials is largely hampered by lack of methods for characterizing reliably their local (anisotropic) properties at the sub-micron length scales. Recently, remarkable advances in nanoindentation data analysis techniques have been made which now make it possible to obtain quantitative information about the local mechanical properties of constituent individual grains in polycrystalline metallic samples. In this work, a novel approach that combines mechanical property information obtained from spherical nanoindentation with the complementary structure information measured locally at the indentation site, using Electron Backscattered Diffraction (EBSD), is used to systematically investigate the local structure-property relationships in fcc metals. This work is focused on obtaining insights into the changes in local stored energies of polycrystalline metallic samples as a function of their crystal orientation at increasing deformation levels. Furthermore, using the same approach, the evolution of mechanical properties in the grain boundary regions in these samples is studied in order to better understand the role of such interfaces during deformation and recrystallization processes. The findings provide valuable information regarding development of stored energy gradients in polycrystalline materials during macroscopic deformation.

Abstract:
Advanced high strength steels (AHSS) have high susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement, and are often exposed to hydrogen environments in processing. In order to study the embrittlement and recovery of steel, tensile tests were conducted on two different types of AHSS over time after hydrogen charging. Concentration measurements and hydrogen microprinting were carried out at the same time steps to visualize the hydrogen behavior during recovery. The diffusible hydrogen concentration was found to decay exponentially, and equations were found for the two types of steel. Hydrogen concentration decay rates were calculated to be -0.355 /hr in TBF steel, and -0.225 /hr in DP. Hydrogen concentration thresholds for embrittlement were found to be 1.04 mL/100 g for TBF steel, and 0.87 mL/100g for DP steel. TBF steel is predicted to recover from embrittlement within 4.1 hours, compared to 7.2 hours in DP steel. A two-factor method of evaluating recovery from embrittlement, requiring hydrogen concentration threshold and decay rate, is explained for use in predicting recovery after exposure to hydrogen. Anisotropic hydrogen diffusion rates were also observed on the surface of both steels for a short time after charging, as hydrogen left the surface through <001> and <101> grains faster than grains with <111> orientations. This could be explained by differences in surface energies between the different orientations.

Abstract:
Abstract In this paper we described a technique which is not commonly used for failure analysis: Orientation Imaging Microscopy (OIM). We demonstrated that it offers unique opportunity for failure analysis of Cu bonding and interconnects. Additionally to its main application: texture analysis, it can also reveal early stages of oxidation of Cu bond pads and interconnects. A link has been made between oxidation and bondability. OIM can also show areas of the wire bond where the deformation concentrates due to the bonding process.

Abstract:
Accumulation of microdamage contributes to the deterioration of bone quality with aging among the elderly [1]. Microdamage formation in bone is dependent on its ultrastructural constituents. At the ultrastructural level, bone is a fiber-reinforced composite material in which mineral crystals are responsible for its stiffness and collagen fibrils offer its toughness [2]. Using animal models with distinct mineralization levels (BL6 and C3H mice), a previous study has demonstrated that highly mineralized bone tend to form linear microcracks whereas less mineralized bone is more likely to have diffuse damage [3]. To our knowledge, however, the effect of collagen phase on the microdamage formation of bone has not been well studied. Less collagen content [4] and smaller diameter [5] of collagen fibrils have been observed in bone with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) disease, a mutation of a single nucleotide deletion in proα2(I) collagen gene. The oim mouse model has been widely used as animal models to study osteogenesis imperfecta disease. Consequently, the objective of current study was to determine the influence of collage phase alterations on microdamage formation in bone using oim mice.

Abstract:
In situ characterization of mechanics of deformation including dynamic strain, strain-rate and rotation of material elements was performed in prototypical small length-scale forming operation- indirect extrusion (IE) of commercially pure Lead (Pb) and Aluminum (Al 1100) using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. Effects of scaling and deformation rate over a range of dimensions and velocities on mechanical response of CP Pb and the resultant anomalies were studied. Additionally, previous and post-deformation characterization of microstructure in Al was accomplished by performing Orientation Imaging Microscopy (OIM) on workpiece materials with different grain sizes. Finally, In situ characterization aided by high speed imaging of indirect extrusion of Al coupled with a Visco-Plastic Self-Consistent (VPSC) model was used to predict the evolved textures in various regions of deformation zone and the results were compared to OIM observations.

Abstract:
The overall objective of this study was to evaluate whether surface crystal orientation can be used to associate metal fracture fragments. This study examined the orientations of the fractured crystals across the fracture plane for two surfaces determined to be a matching fracture by conventional methods. This study used Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction (EBSD), sometimes known as Orientation Imaging Microscopy (OIM), to determine the crystallographic orientation of individual metal crystals along the length of the fracture on a surface perpendicular to the actual fracture surface. This investigation examined the uniqueness of crystal orientations within a metal and examined the requirements necessary for determination of crystallography using EBSD. This study also examined the crystallographic information as to whether it is sufficiently reliable characteristic from which a quantitative determination could be made that two separate pieces of metal are, in fact, from a single piece.

Lu, Y. C., G. Goszczynski, and S. Ramamurthy. "Degradation of Alloy 800 Under Steam Generator Secondary Side Crevice Conditions." In 17th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. ASMEDC, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone17-75695.

Full text
Abstract:
Alloy 800 is the preferred steam generator (SG) tube materials for CANDU™ reactors and is also used extensively in SGs in some pressurized water reactor (PWR) systems. Degradation of Alloy 800 SG tubing has only been found in a few tubes at a limited number of stations despite the large number of SG tube operating years accumulated to date. Recently, underdeposit corrosion was detected in a few ex-service tubs removed from some CANDU SGs. Pits like wall loss of about 5% to 10% through-wall depth were found in these ex-service tubes. Evidence of intra-tubesheet cracking of Alloy 800 tubes was detected in a few European PWR SGs. There is no degradation in mechanical properties of these ex-service CANDU SG tubes. In addition, the degradation of Alloy 800 tubes observed so far is not a safety issue. However, the findings suggest that Alloy 800 tubing may have some aging degradation susceptibility after many years of service. Whether the degradation of Alloy 800 tubing is due to imperfections in its compositional or metallurgical properties inherent from manufacturing, or due to the aggressive chemistry conditions that should have been precluded by modern chemistry control strategy require clarification. Comprehensive examinations, including metallurgical examinations, orientation imaging microscopy (OIM), surface analyses and electrochemical measurements were performed on the removed ex-service CANDU SG tubes that had some underdeposit corrosion. The results were compared with a reference nuclear grade Alloy 800 tubing and with archive Alloy 800 new SG tubes from several CANDU stations. High-temperature electrochemical tests, scanning vibrating electrode Technique (SVET) measurements as well as C-ring autoclave tests were performed to determine the possible factors leading to Alloy 800 SG tubing degradation. SCC was initiated in a few C-ring specimens in the presence of artificial cold work flaws under simulated acidic SG secondary-side crevices chemistry conditions. OIM and surface analysis were also performed to characterize the degradation initiated in Alloy 800 tubing under the influence of cold work flaws. The possible factors leading to Alloy 800 SG tubing degradation under SG secondary crevices conditions are discussed.

In ASME 2016 11th International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/msec2016-8609.

Full text
Abstract:
Effects of starting microstructure on deformation behavior of commercially pure Ni blanks during micro-deep drawing was studied utilizing microforming set up that sits inside the chamber of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) enables in situ observation of material flow during deformation. Various microstructure fields were created in Ni blanks using Severe Plastic Deformation (SPD) and heat treatment. SEM based Digital Image correlation (DIC) technique was used to characterize the micromechanics of deformation and its relation to process outcomes/performance. Pre and post–deformation microstructure analysis was carried out by performing Orientation Imaging Microscopy (OIM) to track the microstructure evolution across the micro-formed blanks during deformation in order to identify the process anomalies originated from the characteristics of starting microstructure and its interaction with deformation mechanics. We showed that microstructurally graded sheets consisting of nano-grained/coarse-grained layers significantly improves the formability of micro-blanks and effectively delays strain localization and onset of instability/failure during micro-deep drawing.

Full text
Abstract:
Grain boundaries play a very important role in intergranular corrosion. They determine whether the material is prone to intergranular corrosion or not. A study has been carried out to determine the influence of grain boundaries on the degree sensitization of Type 304 stainless steel (SS) and Type 316L stainless steel. The alloys were different thermomechanical treatment to obtain a variation in grain boundaries. They were then annealed and sensitized. The degree of sensitization was evaluated by using the Double Loop Electrochemical Potentiokinetic Reactivation (DL-EPR) technique and intergranular corrosion was evaluated by ferric sulfate-sulfuric acid test. In these tests, the degree of sensitization was measured by determining the ratio of the maximum current generated by a reactivation scan to that of the anodic scan, i.e. Ir: Ia, and intergranular corrosion was measured from weight loss of specimens. The grain boundary character distribution was measured with the help of Orientation Imaging Microscope (OIM). The degree of sensitization was then related to the grain boundary measurements. It was found that the degree of sensitization and intergranular corrosion is low at high angle grain boundaries in both types of stainless steel.

Full text
Abstract:
The advent of American shale oil and its prospects for continued production growth have raised concerns about whether oil refineries can handle the increasingly lighter crude oil supply. To provide a perspective on this issue, we run a global oil refining model for the years from 2017 to 2030. The model’s objective is to maximize refining industry profits in eight global regions, taking into account around 100 grades of crude oil.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper uses a model of intergenerational accounting to simulate the intergenerational distribution of oil wealth in Venezuela. Venezuelan oil production does not seem to follow an optimal extraction path. Nevertheless, this is true if we do not consider what the government does with the resources received from the oil sector. In this paper we explored the interaction of oil policy and fiscal policy using an intergeneration accounting model. We found that these interactions could explain certain outcomes. In particular, the model could explain why the sector was open for investment in 1991 and then “re-nationalized” in 2001. Results suggest that when fiscal policy could leave an important burden to future generations, voters seem to favor a more tax oriented oil policy, leaving the oil in the subsoil.

Abstract:
Between January 2015 and mid-2020, about 69 of the approximately 2,160 small-to-medium independent oil companies operating in the tight oil sector filed for Chapter 11 protection. These filings mostly occurred in 2016 and 2019. A lack of financial discipline and poor financial risk assessment meant that these companies were negatively impacted by the low oil prices in these years. Hence, they declared bankruptcy.
