Full textThe aim of this thesis was to investigate how new Chinese words are formed and to examine the linguistic patterns among them. This thesis focused on the analysis of Chinese words formed in 2014. The quantitative data for the analysis included a collection of 423 new Chinese words from the book 2014 汉语新词语 (hànyǔxīn cíyǔ) by Hou and Zhou. Parts of speech and number of syllables in the new words were investigated, although the focus was on word-formation processes. A discussion of derivation, blending, abbreviation, analogy, borrowing, change of meaning, compounding and inventions is also included. The share of each word-formation process used for each of the new words was presented statistically in order to reveal the significance of each word-formation process. The analysis showed that compounding, derivation and abbreviation were the major word-formation processes in 2014. The study also suggests that words formed by derivation and analogy were much more frequent in 2014, in comparison to previous studies. Furthermore, the ways words are formed in Chinese are changing and evolving, as some word-formation processes are becoming more frequently used in the formation of new words.

This research focuses primarily on the interactive documentary comparing it to what we consider traditional documentary. The research describes the study of the documentary genre and its evolution over time. In a more current context, the changes brought about in the documentary genre are referred to as a result of Web emergence and media convergence, which allows the interactive documentary to present itself as an emerging genre. Having established certain theoretical parameters, this document describes and analyzes the webdocumentary: “The Interview Project” by David Lynch. It is intended to conduct and produce an interactive and participatory documentary that presents a non-linear fashion testimonies and stories of Portuguese descendants, to see how each generates and reflects the cultures that make up their hybrid identities.

Full textThis study investigated the inpatient to outpatient social work hand off process at a Southern California Kaiser Permanente facility. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of social work intervention in reducing hospital readmissions.
Secondary data were analyzed from a sample of 73 patients in the hand off group and 73 patients in an equivalent comparison group. Deidentified data were compiled from patients’ charts and other documentation.
Readmission rates were lower in the hand off group (30.1%) than in the comparison group (34.2%), although the difference was not significant. Those in the hand off group who were not readmitted received significantly more social work touches than those who were readmitted. Length of stay, Admissions, Comorbidities, Emergency Visits (LACE) scores (a measure of risk) were also a predictor of readmission in the hand off group but not in the comparison group.
Research continues to be needed regarding the role of medical social workers in reducing hospital readmissions.
Jönsson, Joakim. ""Word of mouth" : Hur påverkas hotellgäster av "word of mouth"." Thesis, Örebro University, Department of Restaurant & Culinary Arts, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:oru:diva-4878.

Full textThe study examines the complexity of how social media can be studied, and in what way the social networks relate to networks in social media and how it affects the consumers. The purpose with the study is to examine the relation between social media and social networks, with a focus on consumer behavior and thereby create a general model that explains the problem. The study is based on a literature review that is primarily compiled by articles with focus on issues surrounding social networks, electronic social networks and social media. A survey was done to compile consumers' opinions about the area for the topics, in order to eventually culminate in an analysis and discussion. It is possible to conclude that social media has expanded the social network for the individual consumer. The result is that individual consumers now can get in touch with more influencing factors and other customers that in many cases may be unknown. Even though they are unknown, consumers tend to rely on the information obtained to the extent that it can affect the purchase decision.

College Algebra is a gatekeeper course that serves as an obstacle for many students pursuing STEM careers. Lack of success in this course could be a key reason why the United States lags behind other industrialized countries in the number of students graduating with STEM majors and joining the STEM workforce. Of the many topics presented in College Algebra that pose problems, students often have particular difficulty with the application of systems of equations in the form of word problems. The present study aims to identify the factors associated with success and failure on systems of equations word problems. The goal was to identify the factors that remained significant predictors of success in order to build a theory to explain why some students are successful and other have difficulty. Using the Opportunity-Propensity Model of Byrnes and colleagues as the theoretical guide (e.g., Byrnes & Miller-Cotto, 2016), the following questions set the groundwork for the current study: (1) To what extent do antecedent (gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and university) and propensity factors (mathematical calculation ability, mathematics anxiety, self-regulation, motivation, and ESL) individually and collectively predict success with systems of equations word problems in College Algebra students, and (2) How do these factors relate to each other? Bivariate correlations and hierarchical multiple regression were used to examine the relationships between the factors and word problem set-up as well as correct completion of the word problems presented. Results indicated after all variables were entered, calculation ability, self-regulation as determined by homework score, and anxiety were the only factors to remain significant predictors of student performance on both levels. All other factors either failed to enter as significant predictors or dropped out when the complete set had been entered. Reasons for this pattern of results are discussed, as are suggestions for future research to confirm and extend these findings.

Full textThis research contributes to scholarly understanding of the labor market activity of women living in disadvantaged neighborhoods in large U.S. cities, the group most affected by 1996's welfare reform legislation. Welfare reform tightened eligibility for means-tested assistance programs, forcing many women to seek employment despite daunting personal obstacles. This research uncovers the extent to which this subset of women found steady employment in standard, living-wage jobs as well as the reasons why many have not. Unlike most work in this field, it incorporates measures of neighborhood disadvantage to further explore the spatial barriers to employment faced by this demographic group. I ask whether neighborhood context matters for employment outcomes, beyond individual characteristics and circumstances. Survey data, collected in 1998-1999 and 2001, come from the Project on Devolution and Urban Change, a longitudinal study of 3,916 women living in poor neighborhoods of four U.S. cities. I link these individual data to tract-level U.S. Census data, resulting in a longitudinal, multi-city, geographically-linked dataset, something that no previous published research uses, but an important tool for understanding how neighborhood context affects individual outcomes. The methodological approach involves a combination of regression techniques including pooled logistic regression, ordinary least squares regression, the use of change scores as predictors, the use of lagged endogenous variables, and the derivation of predicted probabilities using results from regression models. Results of this research indicate that neighborhood disadvantage is of only modest utility in explaining women's work trajectories. Although living in neighborhoods with more car ownership does improve employment outcomes, other neighborhood measures are less important. Some traditional markers of "disadvantage," such as the presence of female-headed (single parent) households, actually facilitate better employment outcomes, suggesting the need to reevaluate traditional notions of neighborhood advantage and disadvantage. Individual barriers to employment, particularly health, childcare and family responsibilities, and individual car ownership are consistently predictive of better employment outcomes. The results suggest the potential importance of spatially-targeted programs aimed at alleviating childcare, health and transportation barriers to employment.
