Abstract:
In the middle of the cranescape around Potsdamer Platz, one of the most questionable building projects of the reunified Berlin can currently be viewed. If one walks in an easterly direction along Potsdamerstrasse, on the left, just behind the Kammermusiksaal and the Philharmonie, one sees the scaffolding of Helmut Jahn's eleven-storey Sony Centre, which, in its triangular form, extends to the Potsdamer Platz. As can be gathered from the models and computer simulations found in the scarlet infobox on the adjoining Leipziger Platz, the Chicago architect is planning to construct a complex consisting of a forum, the Sony Europa Centre, an office tower and two office blocks. In conjunction with the Centre and the tower as the tallest element, these two office blocks—one pointing east toward Bellevuestrasse and the other pointing west toward the Philharmonie—form a triangle that circumscribes an oval forum. The office blocks, as well as the Centre and the tower, are steel and glass constructions whose rooms at the back will offer a view of the forum from floor to ceiling. The approximately 100-metre high office tower will assume dynamism and elegance by virtue of a glass façade that will extend sideways above and beyond the semicircular building.

AbstractThe Tower of London is one of the most famous sites in the world, yet its recent architectural history has been almost entirely overlooked. This article represents the first attempt to explore the architectural approach taken by the Tower authorities at the turn of the twentieth century. It analyses the on-going programme of restoration undertaken by the Office of Works during this period in the context of the Tower's singular status as military garrison, historic monument and preeminent tourist attraction, and it considers the Office's stance in relation to increasing public and parliamentary interest in the preservation and restoration of historic buildings. Historic Royal Palaces' collection of architectural drawings offers an unexplored insight into the activities of the Office of Works during this time. Through a close reading of these drawings I show that, contrary to what has previously been supposed, the Office's interventions continued well past the radical restorations of the 1880s and into the twentieth century, as they sought to control the historical narrative of the site through its architecture.

ABSTRACT. Presently the current weather information at four International Airports in India is being provided to air traffic control units through a Close Circuit Television (CCTV) system. The meteorological assistant who sits in the control tower obtains the information from various panels in front of him, prepares the display card by filling values of various parameters and then displays it through CCTV system. This method of display is outdated and lacks quality. Two improved computer based display systems have been developed at Meteorological Office. Palam. These systems greatly improve the quality of display presentation. These can also be used to extend the current weather display system to distant users like, International Airlines offices. One of the system is under test at the Meteorological Office, Palam, Terminal and working satisfactorily. A remote extension of this display system is also working at international Meteorological Office at Terminal II which is 10 km away from the main office at Terminal I.

Abstract:
Project performance is assessed using various criteria. Quality is one of the typical triangle criteria used to assess the performance of any office building project. However, office projects in Vietnam have faced numerous quality risks, particularly during their construction periods. This can cause the building projects to be delayed and over budget. As a result, identifying quality risk factors throughout the construction phase of office projects is essential. Therefore, this paper applies the analytical hierarchy process to prioritize critical risk factors affecting project quality during the construction phase of the Biconsi Tower project in Vietnam. The research results show that the five top risk factors affecting the quality of the Biconsi Tower project from most to least impact are as follows: (1) inspection and approval work are not in accordance with regulations and procedures, (2) lack of coordination between project stakeholders, (3) poor quality design documents and drawings, (4) poor construction methods, and (5) poor quality input materials.

Abstract:
In June and July 2008, two office workers were admitted to a Dublin hospital with Legionnaires' disease. Investigations showed that cooling towers in the basement car park were the most likely source of infection. However, positive results from cooling tower samples by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) did not correlate with subsequent culture results. Also, many employees reported Pontiac fever-like morbidity following notification of the second case of Legionnaires' disease. In total, 54 employees attended their general practitioner or emergency department with symptoms of Legionnaires' disease or Pontiac fever. However, all laboratory tests for Legionnaires' disease or Pontiac fever were negative. In this investigation, email was used extensively for active case finding and provision of time information to employees and medical colleagues. We recommend clarification of the role of PCR in the diagnosis of legionellosis and also advocate for a specific laboratory test for the diagnosis of the milder form of legionellosis as in Pontiac fever.

This article deals with an American architect, George B. Post, and the organization of his office. Post's practice was one of the earliest to be conducted as an office rather than an atelier. It was also the first large architectural practice based on what came to be considered the prototypical American building, the office tower. The article examines the organization of Post's office, the way work was done, the building types designed, and the nature of its clients. It concentrates on the design process of one particular building, the Western Union Telegraph Building in New York, which was pivotal not only for this practice but for American architecture. The Western Union Telegraph Building was an early example of the national corporate headquarters and, if it was not the first skyscraper, then it certainly was its immediate precursor.

Abstract:
John J. Emery's Carew Tower complex in Cincinnati, Ohio, was an unusual example in the 1920s of the congruence between progressive skyscraper design and planning on the one hand, and progressive social and political tendencies on the other. Although its massing and major ornamental motifs were derived from other work in the decade by French and American designers, it nevertheless exhibited a spatial and circulatory originality unmatched by office buildings, hotels, or mixed-use skyscrapers prior to Rockefeller Center. More fully than any other skyscraper development between 1920 and 1935, the Carew Tower complex integrated significant aspects of local history with the architectural sophistication and the large-scale technological and organizational innovations generally identified with New York City and Chicago. At the same time, in an era when boss rule and political patronage dominated the governments of most large American cities, Emery and the Carew Tower complex were integrally associated with the extensive programs of public works and governmental reforms instituted in Cincinnati between 1924 and 1936.

The paper presents the study on the control optimization of the central cooling plant system including thermal chilled water energy storage (TES) tank in a high-tech building consists of office area, clean room and lab space. The optimized control sequences were implemented on the cooling tower staging, cooling tower fan/condenser water pump/primary chilled water pump staging and speed control, chiller staging, TES pump speed and TES modulation valves control, and secondary chilled water loop differential pressure control. The proposed control effectively resolved the problem of fluctuation in the secondary chilled water supply temperature during charging cycle and temperature increase during the discharging cycle. The number of primary chilled water pumps, condenser water pumps and cooling tower fans were also reduced to minimum after the optimization. Implementation of optimized control sequences is predicted to have an annual electricity savings of 856,125 kWh, which is about 20% of the total central plant energy consumption.

Abstract:
Solution regeneration of the heat-source tower is significant to guarantee the normal operation of the heat-source tower. Mechanical vapor recompression system is an efficient system for evaporation of solution. In this paper, mechanical vapor recompression system is applied to regenerate solution of heat-source tower. To clarify the merits of mechanical vapor recompression solution regeneration system, several typical solution regeneration systems are modelled. As a result, mechanical vapor recompression shows 35.7%, 73.5% and 91.2% energy saving compared to air-driven heat pump, three-effect evaporating system, and single effect evaporating system, respectively. Furthermore, a heat-source tower heat pump with solution generation system is installed in a typical building in Yangtze river region. The whole heating season performance is simulated to find the effects of different solution regeneration system on the whole heat pump system. As a conclusion, the seasonal coefficient of performance of heat pump is decreased 1.6% by mechanical vapor recompression regeneration system. Comparatively, the seasonal coefficient of performance of heat pump is decreased 2.6%, 4.2% and 10.0% by air-driven heat pump, three-effect evaporating system, and single effect evaporating system, respectively. Practical application: Solution regeneration systems for heat-source tower heat pump systems have been applied in building projects especially in hot summer and cold winter zone in China based on previous investigation. A heat-source tower heat pump system combined with heat pump solution regeneration system has been applied in an office building in Changsha, Hunan Province in China. And its practical operation energy consumption has been reduced obviously compared with traditional single effect evaporation system. Therefore, it is of vital importance to demonstrate the operating performance of different solution regeneration systems applied in heat-source tower heat pump systems in building.

Abstract:
Near the center of Vienna one can find the world’s first office tower which was designed to feed more energy into the power grid than is required to operate and use the building. This building is the result of the refurbishment of an over 40 years old high-rise building. The so called “(Plus-)Plus-Energy Office High-Rise Building” offers office space for several institutes of the TU Wien. The building was planned and simulated under the premise that every office occupant uses highly energy-efficient IT-hardware which would result in an average electrical power consumption of approximately 50 Watts per office workplace. Moreover, the cooling system of the building was planned for this case, allowing only for a minimal internal thermal load. To realize the simulation results, conventional office IT-hardware needs to be substituted by energy-efficient one and all intensive computing processes, e.g. simulations, ought to be outsourced into the building’s server room. This research presents the challenges faced during the transition from a conventional scientific office setup to an energy-efficient one. The method which was used to encourage the occupants to participate in this transition process will be discussed and the impact on the building’s energy consumption will be shown.

Abstract:
This study aims to determine the dominant factor of the positive impact of ownership of work competency certificates in the perception of artisan on highrise building projects in the city of South Jakarta. Based on existing data the number of workers who already have work competency certificates is still very minimal. That is caused by several factors, namely the process of implementing certification which is considered complicated to the cost which is considered expensive. But behind these constraints, work competency certificates can have a positive impact on construction workers who have them. In this study conducted by quantitative methods by analyzing the percentage of respondents' perceptions. This research was carried out on the Cithaland Tower project, Alamanda Tower, Dharmawangsa Office Tower. The total number of respondents to be studied is 44 people. In this study the dominant factor studied was measured through four indicators namely work motivation, work productivity, work ability and competitiveness. With each percentage acquisition namely for Work Motivation 26.44%, Work Productivity 24.40%, Work Ability 24.66%, and Competitiveness 24.50%. Of the four indicators there is one indicator with the highest percentage and is the most dominant factor, namely the Work Motivation indicator with a percentage of 26.44%.

Abstract:
In the last few years, great improvements have been achieved in building optimization methods. Mustapha Sadeghipour Roudasri and others found new tools ” Ladybug, Honeybee and Butterfly” which could gather many simulation engines and visualization tools ” Energyplus, OpenStudio, Radiance, Daysim, CFD, OpenFOAM, etc ”. Consequently, These simulation engines will integrate with parametric modeling in Grasshopper and multiobjective optimization through Octopus plug-in to form an early stage parametric optimization framework in one canvas. This paper aims at finding the suitable plane shape and building configurations for multi-objective optimization to the daylighting levels and energy consumption of office tower building in the new administrative capital city in Egypt through parametric based optimization method. One of the most commonly used plan shapes of these types of buildings was studied. This shape and many building configurations ”WWR, window material, wall material and shading devices” were parametrically modeled. These Parameters will form many tradeoffs which will be simulated and optimized by the previous framework. Spatial Daylight Autonomy ”SDA300/50%” is examined to optimize Daylighting while Energy Use Intensity ” EUI” is used for energy consumption optimization. Multi-Objective Optimization was performed by genetic algorithms via Octopus plug-in. The near optimum design for plan shape and building configuration to balance between daylighting and energy consumption is achieved and will be a reference model for office tower buildings in this zone in Egypt which is under rapid development. The framework used in this study will guide designers to find effective solutions for early-stage design of office building in one canvas without any conflict between several engines and scripts.

Abstract:
Though directors have been central to the theatre for more than a century, it is not easy to describe their function or explain fully what they do. Since they have not all done the same things, theorizing the office is a slippery enterprise. Despite this difficulty, the cultural authority of directors has become embedded in the thinking of both the commercial and subsidized sectors in most countries in the world, including many parts of Asia, so that directors are fundamental to the way we comprehend and value theatrical work. Though dictatorial modes of direction have been challenged in the past three decades by a variety of strategies, the theatre industry continues to rely heavily upon the managerial and aesthetic skills of the director, who stands as an icon of the successes and failures of twentieth-century theatre. This essay discusses two alternative histories of the director in the modern age, the modernist avant-garde model and an industrial model, showing that the two are much closer than typically claimed. Using André Antoine as case study, the essay offers a critique of certain tendencies in modernist theatre historiography. A final section looks at the interrelationship of the director and the spectator.

New trajectories of Residential Tower Development on selected examples in Manhattan, New York Historically, the tallest buildings to be built in New York were office towers. Their height is one of the defining characteristics of Manhattan’s development, and the city’s skyline, filled with towering buildings, is recognisable all over the world. In the twenty-first century, this skyline is also formed by residential towers. We analysed the situation and evolution of housing buildings on Manhattan, buildings that are often built in place of former office buildings. Based on our research, we have observed the existence of two trajectories in the design of twenty-first-century housing in New York. The first is the functional trend and it is based on an increasing hybridisation of function. The second is the trend of height, which is closely linked with developing technological potential, and which often adversely affects access to insolation on lower storeys and to cross-ventilation. We analysed selected cases of buildings and discussed the relationships between these two architectural currents and their impact on the image and composition of the city.

Abstract:
Abstract The built environment accounts for 44% of UK emissions, of which 18% are from non-domestic buildings. Considering that a façade's performance accounts for more than 50% of the energy consumption of a building, the retrofit of a ‘70s curtain wall system is analysed along with common issues such as poor insulation, fire risk, air infiltration and absence of natural ventilation, all of which are known to affect both occupants’ comfort and energy demand negatively. The methodology includes thermal and energy analysis of the Euston tower, results from which are used to inform an analytical model representing a more extensive building stock. Orientation, occupation, window to wall ratio and floor heights are examined as the main factors influencing heat gains, and different passive design solutions are tested to reduce them. Combining these passive design strategies shows a reduction of cooling demand by up to 91% and overheating hours down to 0% from base case to best case, demonstrating how the retrofit of curtain walls in office buildings is essential to cut emissions, reducing energy demand and improving comfort and productivity.

Abstract:
In the late 1960s, New York's Landmarks Preservation Commission rejected a scandalous proposal submitted by Marcel Breuer and Associates to float a fifty-five-story office tower in the air rights above Grand Central Terminal. The tendency among historians has been to treat Breuer's tower as an act of vandalism, but this article argues that such an interpretation obscures the real political and economic stakes of the controversy. In fact, Breuer's design uncovered the single-minded profit orientation of development interests and the preservationists who opposed the scheme operated less on behalf of a landmark threatened with defacement than against an economy of development operating without meaningful public oversight. Contemporary accounts repress this antagonism between preservationists and a growth machinery operated by corporate capitalists; they repress exactly what the proposal made visible to its critics. And the scandal of Breuer's proposal was not in the threat it posed to the terminal but precisely in the irreconcilability, in the 1960s, of development and preservation.

Abstract:
This paper summarizes the structural concept and design of the twin 303-meter high “Indonesia-1" supertall building currently under construction in Jakarta. The first tower is a 63-story office building, and the second is 59-story, on top of the seven-level basement structure. The lateral resisting system of the towers is RC core-wall and outrigger, and composite floor system - with concrete slab, metal deck, and steel beams - is used for the gravity resisting system. Since the lateral system is outside the scope of the prescriptive system in the Indonesian Seismic Design Code, Modal Pushover Analysis (MPA) combined with Non-linear Response History Analysis (NLRHA) had demonstrated acceptability to the Jakarta building department and its peer review panel. Some challenges in conducting Performance-based Seismic Design (PBSD) are highlighted. In order to speed up construction, which is a critical factor in supertall building construction, erection columns are installed in the RC columns and CSPCM (Core Structure Preceding Construction Method) is applied. Consistently, the design must account for the associated construction sequence.

Abstract:
ASSIGNMENT AND ADMINISTRATION OF PUBLIC PUNISHMENTS BY KAUNAS CASTLE COURT IN THE LATE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY The article deals with the issue of assignment and administration of public punishments by Kaunas Castle Court in the late eighteenth century. In the period under investigation, this court imposed capital and corporal punishments, punishments by imprisonment, removal from office and banishment from the city. Death penalty was imposed on those offenders who were accused of homicide, robbery and theft, although the court did not impose qualified methods of capital punishment. Out of corporal punishments, only flagellation (as the principal and ancillary punishment for crimes against life, health and property, never administered to the nobility) and branding (as an ancillary punishment for thieves) were inflicted. The number of imposed strokes ranged from 50 to 400, with the most common number being 100 strokes. During the analysed period, the main place of confinement continued to the so-called Tower (Upper and Lower) Prison. The Upper Tower Prison registry was dominated by relatively short sentences of 3, 6 and 12 weeks, mostly for violent acts (slaps in the face, forfeiture of real estate, assault with a combat weapon, assault on a nobleman’s house and estate). The Lower Tower Prison was used less frequently (as a punishment for beating a nobleman with a non-combat weapon, unlawful incarceration, and unproven criminal charge offence), but the sentences delivered were longer: from 12, 24 weeks to half a year. From 1782 onwards, instead of imposing the death penalty in cases like theft, robbery and homicide, the court began to give imprisonment sentences (fixed or indefinite) which were non-existent under the GDL law and thus had to be carried out in the Kamianets-Podilskyi prison. Abstract:
A variety of greenhouse gas reduction scenarios have been proposed around the world to ensure sustainable developments and strengthen the global response to the climate change. To cope with this, it is urgently needed to reduce the amount of energy used for the heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigerating (HVAC&R) systems in large buildings. This study discusses the reduction of cooling energy in large office buildings through the minimization of changes in components and equipment, such as heat source equipment and pumps, changes in the layout and operating methods of chilled water circulation pumps, and changes in the temperatures of chilled and condenser water. To do this, this study targeted an entire cooling system consisting of a hydronic system, a chiller, and a cooling tower, and conducted a quantitative analysis of the energy consumption and of the reduction achieved through a change in the pumping system type in the cooling system and a change in the Korean standard design and temperature of chiller and cooling tower via EnergyPlus simulations. The simulation results showed a cooling energy reduction of 103.2 MWh/yr, around 15.7%, where the primary constant-speed system (Case A) was changed to a primary variable-speed pump (Case B) in the configuration with a chilled water circulation pump. To reduce the cooling energy further, annually 142.3 MWh, around 21.7%, Case C in this study changed the outlet temperature of the chiller and temperature difference from 7 °C, 5 K to 9 °C, 9 K. Finally, when applying a change in the condenser water production temperature from 32 to 23.9 °C in accordance with ASHRAE Standard 90.1 for Case D, a cooling energy saving of 182.4 MWh/yr was observed, which is about 27.8%.
