Abstract:
In the middle of the cranescape around Potsdamer Platz, one of the most questionable building projects of the reunified Berlin can currently be viewed. If one walks in an easterly direction along Potsdamerstrasse, on the left, just behind the Kammermusiksaal and the Philharmonie, one sees the scaffolding of Helmut Jahn's eleven-storey Sony Centre, which, in its triangular form, extends to the Potsdamer Platz. As can be gathered from the models and computer simulations found in the scarlet infobox on the adjoining Leipziger Platz, the Chicago architect is planning to construct a complex consisting of a forum, the Sony Europa Centre, an office tower and two office blocks. In conjunction with the Centre and the tower as the tallest element, these two office blocks—one pointing east toward Bellevuestrasse and the other pointing west toward the Philharmonie—form a triangle that circumscribes an oval forum. The office blocks, as well as the Centre and the tower, are steel and glass constructions whose rooms at the back will offer a view of the forum from floor to ceiling. The approximately 100-metre high office tower will assume dynamism and elegance by virtue of a glass façade that will extend sideways above and beyond the semicircular building.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Tower of London is one of the most famous sites in the world, yet its recent architectural history has been almost entirely overlooked. This article represents the first attempt to explore the architectural approach taken by the Tower authorities at the turn of the twentieth century. It analyses the on-going programme of restoration undertaken by the Office of Works during this period in the context of the Tower's singular status as military garrison, historic monument and preeminent tourist attraction, and it considers the Office's stance in relation to increasing public and parliamentary interest in the preservation and restoration of historic buildings. Historic Royal Palaces' collection of architectural drawings offers an unexplored insight into the activities of the Office of Works during this time. Through a close reading of these drawings I show that, contrary to what has previously been supposed, the Office's interventions continued well past the radical restorations of the 1880s and into the twentieth century, as they sought to control the historical narrative of the site through its architecture.

ABSTRACT. Presently the current weather information at four International Airports in India is being provided to air traffic control units through a Close Circuit Television (CCTV) system. The meteorological assistant who sits in the control tower obtains the information from various panels in front of him, prepares the display card by filling values of various parameters and then displays it through CCTV system. This method of display is outdated and lacks quality. Two improved computer based display systems have been developed at Meteorological Office. Palam. These systems greatly improve the quality of display presentation. These can also be used to extend the current weather display system to distant users like, International Airlines offices. One of the system is under test at the Meteorological Office, Palam, Terminal and working satisfactorily. A remote extension of this display system is also working at international Meteorological Office at Terminal II which is 10 km away from the main office at Terminal I.

Raghunathan, Nandagopal. "The corporate plaza and the office tower: The potential for a mutualistic space-form relationship." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/30986.

Full text
Abstract:
Within the context of a site/place on which a skyscraper is developed, the role of the corporate plaza is usually limited to providing a base to glorify the unique form of the skyscraper (the office tower). In such case, the potential for a symbiotic relationship between the skyscraper and the plaza is not realized. In exploring the possibilities of a symbiotic relationship the first step was to research the skyscraper and its evolution. This analysis based on existing literature revealed the 'motive' behind the design and construction of skyscrapers and the reason for its strong physical image - "the corporations desire for an attention drawing device". This desire has resulted in the design of the skyscraper as an object in the urban landscape with a high degree of 'recognizability'. Although the skyscraper's character of recognizability plays an important role in the perception of the site, it fails to provide for the development of 'experiential meaning'. This experiential meaning which is a critical component for the environmental image of the site/place can be provided for in the plaza space. In order for the meaning, that is developed at the plaza, to be associated with the skyscraper, the skyscraper and the plaza should have a sense of continuity and appear as pats of a whole. To achieve this sense of continuity, the design of the plaza space needs to reflect/incorporate the elements that contribute to the strong physical image of the skyscraper as means of reinforcing the image of the skyscraper that is stored in the memory. The remainder of the thesis was to apply and test the above statement/idea in a design solution. the first step in that process was the analysis of existing plazas against the statement-case studies. the case studies reinforced a few aspects that needed to be addressed in the design of the plaza 1) reference to the imageable character can be made through the use of materials as much as shape and forms (and there might be other possibilities based on the character of the building) 2) The functional aspect of the plaza is critical for the successful use of the plaza, an assumption that supports this thesis. Once inferences were made from the case studies the next step was to decide on a site to redesign a plaza space- The PPG place in Pittsburgh. The PPG place, a complex of 6 buildings, exemplifies the postmodern movement and was designed by one of the chief proponents of the movement, Philip Johnson. The once stark and desolate plaza was refurbished recently with the addition of fountains around the obelisk in the center. A skating rink is operated in the plaza during the winter months. The design process was initiated by three layers of analysis 1) Analysis of the imageable qualities of the building 2) Analysis of the issues pertaining to the usability of the plaza 3) Analysis of the urban context These three layers of information provided a broad framework for the design of the plaza, from which the final design concept was distilled. the space that is thus designed facilitates a high degree of usability as well as a relationship to the imageability of the skyscraper, ensuring a holistic image for the site/place in which the skyscraper and plaza coexist in a mutualistic relationship.

Aviation is a sphere where voice communication system plays a great role. Proficiency in English is a key tool for an air traffic controller and phraseology of radio exchange has a number of specific features. Air traffic controller’s work includes maintaining an orderly flow of air traffic, servicing of an aircraft and control of safe movement on the ground and in the airspace. The only way to communicate with the pilot is a radio communication, which takes place in a real-time operation and requires maximum attention from the specialist. Among the below overviewed means and methods of training, a special place is taken by simulator training, which has the closest connection with the formation of ATCO's high competence and confidence. For this purpose, the existing training systems and theoretical approach foe studying was analyzed. Training simulators allow the formation of knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as professionally important qualities. The main purpose of this work is to present the device that can be used for aviation personal training, as well as in different directions. The aim of this graduate thesis is an investigation of existing training system for an ATCO, its components and training simulators to be used for a specialist preparation and creation of new simulator for aviation personnel training. Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2001.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 78-88).
This thesis attempts to relate the principal elements of Modern Portfolio Theory ('MPT') to real estate, recognizing that MPT was built not for real estate, but for stocks and bonds. It is split into two parts; the first part deals with 'the theory' of real estate investing, including a commentary on both why mixed-asset portfolios include real estate components, and how MPT relates to real estate. The second part deals with 'the reality'; the extent (or otherwise) to which different investor types apply MPT to their direct, private equity real estate investment strategies. It attempts to answer this question by a case study approach, focusing on four investor types. These investors were specifically chosen because of the fact that they are, in each case, sophisticated groups who have a knowledge and understanding of the principal elements of MPT. The extent to which they feel that all elements of MPT are relevant to real estate is, ultimately, the question that this paper attempts to answer.

Abstract:
As global energy consumption levels soar, people seek alternative production from the sun, wind, and water. Of these sustainable technologies, wind arguably proves most efficient in producing large quantities of usable energy. Historically, people harnessed the wind and controlled solar gain through architecture. While the urban application of renewable energy begins to appear in cities, it remains largely as production occuring on the periphery where the most space is available. Citing these fields of production necessitates expanding energy and infrastructure to produce energy where it is needed. What if energy production occured at the site of consumption? What if production and consumption co-existed equally? What if wind harnessing technologies began to influence architecture? This thesis will study the feasibility and architectural potential for incorporating these renewable technologies into existing urban settings to reduce transmission loss. These buildings will not just be a traditional power plant, but will also teach users about consumption levels, turning the space into a dual-usage program. It is my intention to investigate how buildings can both produce energy and contribute to the public life of cities.

As a consequence of their multiple identities, underrepresented leaders often navigate both racialized and gendered pathways to leadership in the U.S. education industry. Nevertheless, relatively little is known about the impact of their intersecting identities and the structural barriers in this sector. To deepen our collective understanding of this phenomenon, the author reviews existing theories and research related to the intersection of race and gender within the educational leadership sphere. More specifically, the author highlights the individual and compounding effects of gender and race on the professional realities of current and aspiring leaders in education at the Central Office (i.e., the Ivory Tower). This chapter concludes by proffering future research propositions, theory development, and policy in this arena.

Abstract:
This chapter links the essential parasitism of cold war systems to some general trends of 20th century telecommunications (economically motivated service-oriented multi-media). Certain (existential) fictions of the second half of the century explore and instantiate the peculiar logic of the parasite. The chapter draws out the implications of an ethics grounded in the attempt to deal with this logic and questions where such attempts, and the desires that drive them, might lead. These ethical concerns are connected via technological analysis to the 1956 plan for a radio link (known as Backbone) running north and south through the UK, avoiding large towns and meant to provide a safe route for communications vital to the prosecution of a war. The conjunction of existentialist fiction with the cold war technology ties together a triad of puzzles of the era: communication, existence and the problem of other minds. But the problems have since shifted—the rational subject now comes into being belatedly as an interrupter, a parasite, displacing or replacing the previous parasite. The parasitical arrangement does not follow the formal order of subject and object but occurs intersubjectively, producing its subjects in the process and figuring a fundamental alteration in social relations.

Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this research is to evaluate the feasibility and performance of a vertical ground source refrigeration system for cooling a typical 7300 m2 office building after replacing cooling towers used for condenser cooling with three different designs of ground heat exchangers. To that end, a three-dimensional, transient, and conjugated finite volume model is developed and simulated to compare the thermo-hydraulic performance of the traditional single U-tube with that of double U-shaped, and spiral-shaped ground heat exchangers at different flow rates. Based on the results, spiral shaped ground heat exchangers outperform other designs, as seen by better heat exchange rates between the fluid and the soil, which translates to a greater temperature reduction of the cooling water. This improvement not only allows for using smaller number of boreholes which saves the construction costs compared to other designs, but it also improves the coefficient of performance of the system by significantly lowering the cooling water temperature flowing back to the condenser when compared to the conventional cooling tower. This approach also eliminates cooling tower water consumption (saves about 14,500 L/day), tower noise, annual maintenance expenses, and costs for periodical cooling tower replacement. The presented findings make a significant contribution to society by offering innovative and sustainable solutions for cost reduction, environmental conservation, and energy efficiency.

Abstract:
After 16 years of leading the Hyperbody research group as professor of practice at the TU Delft, I wanted to do something completely different and looked at the Gulf region for further educational and professional activities. I was familiar with the region, having lectured in several countries of the Middle East and eventually having realized an office building in Abu Dhabi. My practice ONL [Oosterhuis_Lenard], which I run together with my wife and business partner visual artist Ilona Lenard, proposed a number of iconic architectural proposals for hotels and office towers, and was eventually awarded some prestigious commissions for master planning projects: the redevelopment of Manhal Palace, the residence of previous ruler Sheik Zayed in Abu Dhabi. Our continuous efforts to contribute to the building market in the UAE culminated in our realized design for Mr Abdullah Al Nasser, the LIWA tower in Abu Dhabi [2014]. I Joined the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning [DAUP] at Qatar University in September 2017.

Since 2002 the Nine-story building of the headquarters of the European Agency for the Reconstruction of Kosovo is equipped with a solar thermal driven heating and cooling system. The performance fulfils the expectations fully and proof the chosen design and sizing of the system. Solar energy can cover around 75% of the cooling demand and a reasonable fraction of the heating too.

Abstract:

As cities worldwide are increasing in density, building departments and municipalities are allowing construction using the air‐rights above transportation infrastructure to maximize use of valuable real estate. One Manhattan West (1MW) and Two Manhattan West (2MW) are supertall office towers recently designed and engineered by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) that rise above the underground train approach to New York City’s Penn Station. Although the towers are neighbors and have a similar program, they are undercut by the train tracks in different ways. The disparate below ground conditions result in two distinct structural solutions.

The structural system of 1MW is a concrete core and a perimeter steel moment frame. The site conditions prevent the perimeter of the 304‐meter‐tall tower from reaching the foundation. This challenge is addressed by transferring the perimeter to the core above the ground, thus making 1MW one of the slenderest structures in New York City. The structural system of 2MW consists of a central braced steel core with outrigger and belt trusses and a perimeter steel moment frame. Here the perimeter reaches the foundation with a few lateral transfers however only half of the core reaches terra firma. This paper presents a side‐by‐side comparison of the structural solutions for the two towers.

Abstract:

The 5 Martin Place development transformed a 1916 heritage building in Sydney’s CBD into an iconic 20-level premium grade office building. Development constraints prohibited any modification of heritage building, structure and any extra permanent loading on the heritage structures. This posed what was considered to be an impossible challenge through being either ‘unbuildable’ or ‘un- fundable’. An innovative architectural design and believed world-first structural solution unlocked the site’s potential. To use all available development area, the proposal was to cantilever 10-levels of tower 22 metres over the heritage building. The outcome exceeded expectations and created benchmarks for design and construction methodology that could be adopted for much taller buildings.
