Abstract:
A strong relationship exists between the Cahuilla people and their cultural landscapes. The meaning of cultural places is expressed through traditional knowledge of oral histories, place names, traditional songs, ceremonies and landscape use. Historically, the Cahuilla maintained their relationship with landscapes while incorporating new lifestyles introduced by the Spanish, Mexicans, and Americans. My thesis provides a basic model for examining historical settlements patterns and analyzing the continued traditional lifestyle and landscape by the Desert Cahuilla. Using information from published ethnographic data and traditional knowledge, I use GIS mapping to provide visual support to some hypotheses scholars have on village migrations and continued cultural landscape use. This is the first step in researching historic cultural landscape use and the information can be used in further analysis in archaeology and cultural resource use. Furthermore, this thesis will serve as a significant source in rediscovering, reconnecting, and preserving Cahuilla places.

The Cacao Haciendas have been an important element of the Venezuelan cultural heritage since the seventeenth century, especially the haciendas in Choroni. These historic agricultural landscapes have been threatened since the decline of agriculture and the rise of the oil economy in the country, beginning in the 1930s. In Choroni, agriculture was replaced by tourism and fishing, creating a need for housing and hotels in the area that were constructed in the agricultural spaces and destroyed the landscape heritage that has lasted almost 400 years. To understand and analyze these sites, I studied three haciendas of the six remaining in Choroni, identifying the character-defining features that shaped these historic cultural landscapes and proposing a conservation plan for the remaining haciendas. The cultural landscape analysis and conservation plan are designed within the Venezuelan conservation heritage laws and the needs of the local society and culture in Choroni, building on parallel practices in the United States.

Abstract:
Histories of past communities are embedded in landscapes around the world but many are suffering from material change or neglect of their fabric. This study was aimed at discovering and representing the authentic intangible experience of two historic landscapes for conservation purposes. A 2500 year old site in Yangzhou, China and a 2000 year old site on St Helena Island in Moreton Bay were found to be managed under two culturally different regimes of authenticity. This research has contributed to challenging the notion that there is only one way to conserve authenticity in historic landscapes of the Asia Pacific.

Brownell, Lisa Rainey. "VALUES IN PLACE: INTERSECTING VALUES IN RAILS TO TRAILS LANDSCAPES." UKnowledge, 2011. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/gradschool_diss/197.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a study of the values and meanings people attach to places and why exploring those values is important in trails and historic preservation planning. From a foundation in critical humanistic geography and values based preservation literatures, the dissertation examines three rails to trails projects as case studies. Primary research questions include: how does a landscape become valued, devalued, and/or revalued through time? In what ways do different values of different people or groups intersect in rails to trails landscapes and how do they shape the landscape? How do historic values intersect with economic, social, political, and other values as these relate to landscape preservation? A subset of questions deals with the interactions between trails, historic preservation, and geography. What common ground do these three areas already share and what is the potential for further connections between and through them? The project contributes to the geographical tradition of interpreting ordinary landscapes but also works towards bringing together the common ground of three disparate endeavors: cultural geography, historic preservation, and trails planning around the theme of “values in place.”

Kegley, Nan F. "Toward the preservation of rural, cultural, historic landscapes: a method for evaluating nineteenth century Blue Ridge farms." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/91037.

Full text
Abstract:
The research hypothesis of this study states that a systematic and operational method for evaluating rural, cultural, historic landscapes, particularly at the regional level, simply does not exist. The purpose of this study was two-fold: first, to prove, through an informal survey of landscape architecture firms involved in historic preservation and preservation organizations, that the hypothesis was true, and secondly, to develop a method for evaluating a specific kind of rural, cultural, historic landscape -- nineteenth century farms in the Blue Ridge Belt. The overriding objective in developing the method for evaluating nineteenth century Blue Ridge farms was to make the evaluation criteria as operational as possible, and, therefore, create a method which would be accessible to the non-professional. The criteria used to evaluate the farms was based on studies done of farms documented in the archives of the Shenandoah National Park in Luray, Virginia, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and the Historic Landsmarks Commission in Richmond, Virginia. The method was designed so that every farm evaluated by means of the checksheet can be scored based on the degree to which it represents a typical nineteenth century Blue Ridge farm.

Wheeler, Emily Anne Brooksby. "The Solitary Place Shall Be Glad for Them: Understanding and Treating Mormon Pioneer Gardens as Cultural Landscapes." DigitalCommons@USU, 2011. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/899.

Full text
Abstract:
The gardens of early Mormon pioneers are a unique cultural resource in the western United States, but little guidance has been provided for understanding or providing landscape treatments for Mormon landscapes. Mormon pioneers came to Utah and the Great Basin to escape religious persecution and build their own holy kingdom. In relative geographical isolation, they built towns that have a distinctive character delineating a Mormon cultural region in the West. Self-sufficiency was an important feature of these towns and of the religious culture of early Mormons, both because of their geographical isolation and their desire to be independent of the world, which they viewed as wicked. This emphasis on self-sufficiency made gardens and gardening an important part of every household, encouraged by religious leaders and individual need. The cultural and personal preferences of individuals did influence the style and contents of Mormon pioneer gardens, but perhaps not to the extent that the religious culture of self-sufficiency did. When managing or treating Mormon pioneer landscapes or gardens, it is helpful to start by assessing any historic features that still exist. Then, the property owner or manager can choose one of the standard landscape treatments of preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, or reconstruction, or opt for some combination of these treatments. Because Mormon pioneers brought plants from all over the world, a large selection of heirloom plants may be suitable for historic Mormon landscapes. A few historic plants are no longer appropriate in Western landscapes because of ecological concerns such as invasiveness or water efficiency, but substitutions for these plants can be found by considering the plant's form, function, and meaning in the historic landscape.

This study describes existing conditions, evaluates significance and historic integrity, and recommends treatment strategies to preserve historic elements of the Nevada Fall Corridor cultural landscape in Yosemite National Park. It reports findings from field investigation that examined and inventoried landscape features such as stone retaining walls, treadway material, bridges and causeways, and water features on both current-use and abandoned trail segments. The site was examined numerous times over a three-month period, with a followup visit one year later. Libraries and other archives were consulted for written and photographic historic documentation, which were analyzed against current conditions. The process also involved review of comparison documents as well as national guidelines set forth by the National Park Service.

Abstract:
The legacy of classical and historical constructions in Brazil has been the target of vandalism, graffiti and total destruction. The city of Curitiba does not escape the rule and, for that reason, the interest for this research appeared, which aims to present the main sustainable concepts and practices of the present, identifying in which way, in what areas of the restoration and conservation of the Cultural heritage, in order to discuss examples in Curitiba. To meet this objective, specific objectives were outlined, such as: the systematization of sustainability and restoration concepts in the current context; Analyze different forms of application of sustainable technology in the practice of revitalizing historical heritage; Understand the main areas of interest in buildings to be preserved; To evaluate the fundamental architectural elements to understand the sustainable action in the historical patrimony and to analyze the fundamental parameters of sustainability in three restored works in Curitiba: Hauer Ferragens, Vila Sophia and Nossa Senhora da Luz Psychiatric Hospital. Justifies, because nowadays, the need to understand how the relation of sustainable policies, techniques and actions with the preservation of the patrimony, seeking to understand how this is reflected in the Brazilian context, becomes clearer day by day. The methodology used was exploratory and descriptive. In order to analyze the works of Curitiba, the methodology of Cornejos (2011) was used to propose guidelines for integrating sustainability concepts into the adaptive reuse of historic buildings, preserving the cultural endowment of the building. The analyzed parameters involved: useful category that analyzes the material aspects of the work; Location, which analyzes the economic aspects; The adaptation will analyze the functional aspect; Energy efficiency, which covers the technological aspect; Sense of place, which analyzes the social aspect; Quality standard that refers to the legal aspect and the context that involves the political aspect. It is concluded that Brazil needs a definitive application in the areas of education, communication, promotion and dissemination of the cultural context of its patrimonial assets. For future generations it is important to understand that the concepts and development of sustainable ideas must pass through direct action in the restoration of cultural heritage. The analyzed works of Curitiba show that the city is taking the first steps towards the preservation and restoration of architectural works, revealing the concern to leave an inheritance of respect to these constructions for future generations.

Foley, Eileen. "A Conservation Strategy for Sustaining the Cultural Significance of Rural Landscapes." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10214/2258.

Full text
Abstract:
This research responds to Quebec’s call to new ways of thinking in land use planning to conserve the cultural significance of its rural landscapes. Based on guidance and approaches of the United Kingdom (UK), including historic landscape characterisation, a conservation strategy is developed and applied to the study site of Saint-Donat, Quebec. The story of the Saint-Donat landscape is told through historical narrative, GIS mapping and analysis both in time-slice and time-depth, and photographic images, which reveal values attributable to the landscape. Demonstration of how landscape policies and land use planning of Saint-Donat are informed to sustain these values is provided through application to two historic landscape character areas: the village and a mountainous recreational area. This research contributes to Canadian, Quebec and UK aims to develop a comprehensive conservation strategy for conserving cultural landscapes. Future research is needed to expand our understanding of how and why people value landscapes and the role values play in managing landscape change and landscape sustainability.

Minner, Jennifer Suzanne. "Landscapes of thrift and choreographies of change : reinvestment and adaptation along Austin’s commercial strips." 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/21045.

Full text
Abstract:
Commercial strips are ubiquitous elements of the American landscape. They offer important opportunities for inquiry into the ways in which cities are adapted, preserved, and redeveloped over time. This research examines the dynamics of reinvestment along central city commercial strips in Austin, Texas. Research was aimed at understanding the relationship between reinvestment in existing commercial buildings and larger processes of redevelopment and change along commercial strips undergoing transition. Case study commercial strips were selected that had been established in the early to mid-twentieth century and that had experienced decline and subsequent reinvestment. Historic patterns of land use, transportation, and economic trends are described and related to the relatively recent growth of concentrations of local businesses and reinvestment activity along case study commercial strips. “Core samples” of preservation and adaptive reuse were examined using spatial data, building surveys, historical data, and interviews with associated actors. Additional interviews were conducted with actors who have initiated, influenced, and regulated reinvestment, including business and property owners, developers, neighborhood activists, a media correspondent, city officials, among others. This research details the private, public, and community-based actors who shape the character of reinvestment; the influx of new businesses and retention of iconic businesses; and conflicts and negotiations at the edges of commercial and residential districts and between public and private sectors. The dissertation relates observations along Austin’s commercial strips to four themes identified in the literature and their associated views of improvement: 1. commercial strips as “wicked problems” of land use and transportation; 2. commercial strips as cultural landscapes and roadside heritage; 3. commercial strips as concentrations of commercial properties with opportunities for sustainability and retrofitting of commercial properties; and 4. commercial strips as contested arenas of gentrification. This research highlights the importance of understanding the durability of existing land development patterns and of incorporating an understanding of the continued and adaptive use of buildings and urban fabric in land use planning. It presents emerging opportunities for preservation practice beyond standard practices of survey and landmarking. It illustrates the many ways in which actors have agency, or “choreograph” change individually and collectively, in responding to opportunities and challenges presented in the context of social and economic change.

Li, Na. "Preserving Urban Landscapes as Public History --- A Qualitative Study of Kensington Market, Toronto." 2011. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/dissertations/AAI3445168.

Full text
Abstract:
Situated within the interpretive and critical traditions, this study aims to contribute to one of the continuing primary themes in urban preservation: how to interpret and preserve the intangible values of built environments. A comprehensive analysis of dominant theories of urban preservation forms the conceptual framework within which this dissertation takes place. It starts by locating the intellectual context of preservation in North America, and examines its basic premises and core issues. It identifies three limits to the traditional approach to preservation planning. The complexity and fragility of history, its narrative quality and its particularities, its emotional content and economic values, all connect urban preservation with public history. Therefore, in the spirit of communicative democracy and “a shared authority”, the study incorporates collective memory as an essential construct in urban landscapes, and suggests a culturally sensitive narrative approach (CSNA). The study employs an in-depth case study. The setting is Kensington Market in Toronto, Canada. It examines retrospectively the urban renewal planning of Kensington Market in the 1960s, identifies the pivotal events that prompted the change of urban renewal policies, and demonstrates, through the interpretive policy analysis, that sometimes urban renewal plans that fail to be implemented can become success stories in how to preserve urban neighborhoods as a kind of public history. To probe deeper into the sources of conflict between the professionals and the public, the study further explores the mutual relationship between collective memory and urban landscapes. It takes a selective look at some significant sites of memory, and connects them into a narrative path. Through oral history interviewing, field observation, and material cultural analysis, this part of the analysis constitutes an empirical study of CSNA. A proposition is derived from this critical case study. The study concludes with seven steps of CSNA, a guide for urban landscape preservation and planning.

Kemer, Nedim. "An Assessment of Natural Resources Management Conflicts in the Working Landscapes of Mediterranean Turkey (Turkiye): Koprulu Kanyon National Park." 2009. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/open_access_dissertations/38.

Full text
Abstract:
Environmental conservation and natural resources management are critical global issues of the 21st century. The management of protected public lands emerges as a challenge particularly in developing countries because of the biophysical and socio-cultural importance of these lands. These lands are often referred to as 'working landscapes' where the natural systems and the collective actions of local residents have shaped one another in well-balanced interactions for generations. The working landscapes of the Köprülü Kanyon National Park (KKNP) in Turkey have provided the case study for this dissertation. Eleven villages exist within the park with a total of approximately 7,100 residents. The rich natural resources of the park have been contested by local communities, management and concessionaires. The objectives of the research were: first, to understand the fundamentals of the natural and socio-cultural dynamics within protected areas in general, and within the KKNP in particular; second, to examine the social conflicts which complicate the management of the KKNP; and third, to explore potential solutions whereby the stakeholders can cooperate in stabilizing the traditional dynamics of the park's working landscapes. Qualitative data was collected via 38 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with local residents, managers and concessionaires. The research found that an array of social disturbances and conflicts impact the social fabric and harm the land-human integrity of the site. These include shifting demographics, changing lifestyles of the villagers, pressures from tourism, multiple governmental authorities and instable management. Yaylacýlýk tradition, a semi-sedentary form of pastoralism, has played a significant role in both the traditional ecology and the social relations within the communities of the KKNP; and its abandonment has severely impacted both social and biophysical conditions. Through yaylacýlýk local residents had managed the lands as common property. The establishment of the national park, changing life styles and the pressures on the local agricultural economy brought an end to yaylacýlýk . Now the resources are treated in effect as open pool resources, thus leading to their demise. Throughout the eventful past of the KKNP the local residents have come from being integral elements of the 'working landscapes,' to being as antagonistic enemies of the park management. The three ideal characteristic elements of the 'working landscapes' of the KKNP (controlled access, coordination and communication) which once were maintained by the yaylacýlýk tradition, can be re-institutionalized within the region through contemporary applications by neutral third party initiatives. Restoration, conservation and efficient management of biophysical resources and the natural environment should be the outcomes of the resolutions of social conflicts which can be accomplished by the restoration of these three elements of the social structure.

Curtin, Abby. "Rethinking Landscape Interpretation: Form, Function, and Meaning of the Garfield Farm, 1876-1905." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/5852.

Full text
Abstract:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
The landscape of James A. Garfield’s Mentor, Ohio home (now preserved at James A. Garfield National Historic Site) contains multiple layers of historical meanings and values. The landscape as portrayed in political biographies, political cartoons, and other ephemera during Garfield’s 1880 presidential campaign reveals the existence of the dual cultural values of agrarian tradition and agricultural progress in the late nineteenth century. Although Garfield did not depend on farming exclusively for his livelihood, he, like many agriculturalists of this era participated in a process of mediation between these dual values. The function of the landscape of Garfield’s farm between 1876 and 1880 is a reflection of this process of mediation. After President Garfield’s assassination in 1881, his wife and children returned to their Mentor home. Between 1885 and c. 1905, Garfield’s widow Lucretia made numerous changes to the agricultural landscape, facilitating the evolution of the home from farm to country estate. Despite the rich history of this landscape, its cultural complexity and evolution over time makes it difficult to interpret for public audiences. Additionally, the landscape is currently interpreted exclusively through indoor museum exhibits and outdoor wayside panels, two formats with severe limitations. I propose the integration of deep mapping into interpretation at James A. Garfield National historic site in order to more effectively represent the multi-layered qualities of its historic landscape.
