Chaoka, Thebeyame Ron. "Three-dimensional simulation of the Columbus tritium plume." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/282439.

Full text
Abstract:
The migration of tritium during a large-scale natural-gradient tracer experiment in Columbus, Mississippi, was simulated using a three-dimensional finite element model for water flow and transport. The results showed that modeling approaches that assume complete homogeneity of the aquifer or of hydrostratigraphic units within the aquifer failed to reproduce the temporal evolution of the first and second spatial moments of the experimental plume. In contrast, the simulation approach that accounted for aquifer heterogeneity gave first spatial moment estimates that were in good overall agreement with experimental results, but failed to simulate the second spatial moments of the tritium plume. The discrepancy between the experimental and simulated second spatial moments may be caused by the temporal and spatial variability of the actual boundary conditions which were not accounted for in the simulations. The failure of homogeneous approaches to simulate the evolution of the tritium plume raises serious questions about the utility of upscaled effective hydraulic properties for forecasting flow and solute transport in aquifers.

Abstract:
Communities throughout the country are faced daily with growth and development pressures. Although such growth is vital to community economic health, its impact on the built environment is long lasting and much more difficult to address. Maintaining the identity or unique features of the community must be balanced against the effects of urban and suburban sprawl. Columbus, Indiana, a community world-renowned for its collection of modem architecture, is not immune to such pressures. This study is intended to serve as a tool for the citizens of Columbus as part of the never-ending process to create a better community and a more attractive urban setting. With Columbus serving as the setting, this urban design study explores how growth has evolved and reshaped the primary corridor running through the community--U.S. 31. Following a theoretical study of the traditional street corridor, and one's interaction with such a setting from both the motorist's and pedestrian's perspective, a detailed analysis of the 31 Corridor is conducted. The analysis encompasses a broad range of pertinent subjects including natural features, land use patterns, and urban design. Such analyses form the framework for the final section of this study.Following this analysis, recommendations for improving the 31 Corridor, and thus, Columbus as a whole are explored. The recommendations center on two primary goals. One focuses on stimulating and improving the motorist's perspective along the 31 Corridor and at the urban edges in the form of community gateways, while the second examines redevelopment strategies which intensify existing land uses and respect the established gateways. To support these goals, a series of objectives and methods are proposed. Both goals, and the supporting objectives are a means to maintain and strengthen the identity, or sense of place of Columbus.

Fisher, Susan A. "A revitalization strategy for an urban shopping plaza : Graceland Plaza, Columbus, Ohio." Virtual Press, 2002. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1246475.

Full text
Abstract:
Located in the Columbus, Ohio, Graceland typifies all the qualities of a dying urban shopping plaza. High amounts of abandoned retail space, a vast sea of parking and undefined vehicular paths create an uninviting public space, while the lack of pedestrian passages, appropriate amounts of shade and connections to natural features contribute to its acerbic character. This revitalization proposal will apply pedestrian scale design strategies to this urban plaza in an effort to increase its accessibility to both pedestrians and cars, promote an atmosphere of comfort and environmental engagement while allowing opportunities for economic growth and stability. The first design goal is the retrofit of the parking and access to encourage walking while still allowing the convenient passage of the automobile. The second design goal is the creation of a compact, mixed-use region with a transportation stop as its anchor. The third design goal is the provision of plan that allows the car but in a manner that protects the needs of the pedestrian.

Fernandes, Vincent John. "Volunteer Motivation, Organizational Commitment, and Engagement| Knights of Columbus Explanatory Case Study." Thesis, University of Phoenix, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10748228.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this qualitative explanatory single case study was to understand why Knights of Columbus (KofC) volunteers in Ontario, Canada demonstrate motivation, organizational commitment, and engagement. The scope of the study was guided by two main research questions: “Why do KofC members volunteer?” and “How do KofC members combine elements of motivation, organizational commitment, and engagement in their volunteer activity?” The triangulation of participant interviews, observations from KofC general meetings, and online archived documents supported the study’s qualitative methodology that required rich, descriptive data. For feasibility, the population of this study was comprised of KofC volunteers within three councils in Ontario, Canada and 17 KofC members were selected purposively based on age and experience criteria for face-to-face interviews. Transcribed interview data, observational field notes and archival documents were analyzed and coded using NVivo 11 to uncover three emerging themes: living one’s faith, loyalty, and flexibility. The findings indicated that KofC members have alignment between personal and organizational values, intend to follow Biblical scripture to live their faith in the public square, and feel obligated to help others in need. Fraternity and unity were welcomed benefits that KofC members enjoyed while volunteering. KofC provides volunteers with role and task variety, which allows volunteers to choose the activities that suit their interest, skill set, and time commitment. By gaining insights from these themes, organizational leaders can improve their communication to potential and existing volunteers, foster stronger relationships among volunteers, and develop programs that engage volunteers through catered recruitment and retention strategies.
