Abstract:
Coalition Structure Generation (CSG) is an NP-complete problem that remains difficult to solve on account of its complexity. In this paper, we propose an efficient hybrid algorithm for optimal coalition structure generation called ODSS. ODSS is a hybrid version of two previously established algorithms IDP (Rahwan and Jennings 2008) and IP (Rahwan et al. 2009). ODSS minimizes the overlapping between IDP and IP by dividing the whole search space of CSG into two disjoint sets of subspaces and proposes a novel subspace shrinking technique to reduce the size of the subspace searched by IP with the help of IDP. When compared to the state-of-the-art against a wide variety of value distributions, ODSS is shown to perform better by up to 54.15% on benchmark inputs.

Abstract:
This paper developes the WWTP operation decision support system (ODSS) to simulate the dynamic behavior of the WWTP treatment process based on ASMs (activated sludge models) and WWTP experiential knowledge. The novel structure and functions of ODSS can offer more flexible and general instructions to the WWTP operations. The three independent sub-systems, namely expert system, simulation system and training system, can cooperate to achieve many more functions such as operation alert, fault diagnosis, process simulation and so forth. The expert system based on the dynamic simulation, an essential part of WWTP ODSS, has been proved to be feasible and effective by the implementation at Fang Zhuang WWTP. Our results indicated that the WWTP ODSS has significant potential for improving plant performance and reducing treatment costs by assisting the operators at the decision-making level.

Abstract:

Abstract. The rates at which ozone depleting substances (ODSs) are removed from the atmosphere, that is, their lifetimes, are key factors for determining the rate of ozone layer recovery in the coming decades. We present here a comprehensive uncertainty analysis of future mixing ratios of ODSs, levels of equivalent effective stratospheric chlorine (EESC), ozone depletion potentials, and global warming potentials, using, among other information, the 2013 WCRP/SPARC assessment of lifetimes of ODSs and their uncertainties. The year EESC returns to pre-1980 levels, a metric commonly used to indicate a level of recovery from ODS-induced ozone depletion, is 2048 for mid-latitudes based on the lifetimes from the SPARC assessment, which is about 2 yr later than based on the lifetimes from the WMO assessment of 2011. However, the uncertainty in this return to 1980 levels is much larger than the 2 yr change. The year EESC returns to pre-1980 levels ranges from 2039 to 2064 (95% confidence interval) for mid-latitudes and 2061 to 2105 for the Antarctic spring. The primary contribution to these ranges comes from the uncertainty in the lifetimes. The earlier years of the return estimates are comparable to a hypothetical scenario in which emissions of ODSs cease in 2014. The later end of the range corresponds to a scenario containing an additional emission of about 7 Mt CFC-11-eq in 2015, which is the same as about 2 times the cumulative anthropogenic emissions of all ODSs from 2014 to 2050, or about 12 times the cumulative HCFC emissions from 2014 to 2050.

Abstract:
Abstract. A state-of-the-art chemistry climate model coupled to a three-dimensional ocean model is used to produce three experiments, all seamlessly covering the period 1950–2100, forced by different combinations of long-lived Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) and Ozone Depleting Substances (ODSs). The experiments are designed to investigate the mechanisms by which GHGs and ODSs affect the evolution of ozone, including changes in the Brewer-Dobson circulation of the stratosphere and cooling of the upper stratosphere by CO2. Separating the effects of GHGs and ODSs on ozone, we find the decrease in upper stratospheric ozone from ODSs up to the year 2000 is approximately 30% larger than the actual decrease in ozone due to the offsetting effects of cooling by increased CO2. Over the 21st century, as ODSs decrease, continued cooling from CO2 is projected to account for more than 50% of the projected increase in upper stratospheric ozone. Changes below 20 hPa show a redistribution of ozone from tropical to extra-tropical latitudes with an increase in the Brewer-Dobson circulation, while globally averaged the amount of ozone below 20 hPa decreases over the 21st century. Further analysis by linear regression shows that changes associated with GHGs do not appreciably alter the recovery of stratospheric ozone from the effects of ODSs; over much of the stratosphere ozone recovery follows the decline of halogen concentrations within statistical uncertainty, though the lower polar stratosphere of the Southern Hemisphere is an exception with ozone concentrations recovering more slowly than indicated by the halogen concentrations. These results also reveal the degree to which climate change, and stratospheric CO2 cooling in particular, mutes the chemical effects of N2O on ozone in the standard future scenario used for the WMO Ozone Assessment. Increases in the residual circulation of the atmosphere and chemical effects from CO2 cooling more than halve the increase in reactive nitrogen in the mid to upper stratosphere that results from the specified increase in N2O between 1950 and 2100.

Abstract:
Managing combined sewage systems in large cities discharging to coastal waters, often bearing recreational activities, remains a challenge. Studying the impacts of such discharges requires the development of specific models. Hydrodynamic and water quality modelling of coastal waters employs numerical methods and algorithms, leading to the design of complex models which require expert use. The use of such models as decision support tools to simulate discharge impacts and define adequate corrective measures could represent a key part in meeting this challenge. In this paper, the authors describe the work undertaken to develop an operational decision support system (ODSS) methodology aiming to enable wastewater utilities' non-expert staff to carry out user-friendly scenario analysis based on computational fluid dynamics simulations. This article depicts the application and validation of the ODSS to the combined sewage system and the Tagus estuary of the city of Lisbon in Portugal. The ODSS was used for simulating the effects in the receiving coastal waters of a discharge caused by a scheduled maintenance operation in the sewage infrastructure. Results show that the use of such ODSS by non-expert staff increases their decision capabilities and knowledge of the wastewater utility's contribution to reducing negative impacts of sewage discharges on the receiving water bodies.

Abstract:

Our aim in this essay was to examine what importance external influence and internal impulses have had in four individuals' career development process in a competitive sector, and how they have handled the situation. The gathering of facts was implemented with the use of semistructured mail-interviews, and processed, using a deductive thematic analysis. The themes were as follows: guidance counseling, cooling down, empowerment, theories of information, former research and SCCT. The study shows that all respondents have been the victims of downcooling effects in their youth, both from school personnel, and the immediate family, but that they also received empowerment from other sources. They have handled the negative impact in various ways, but they all possessed a strong internal desire to create a successful career, that has overcome the negative impact. Therefore we draw the conclusions that the endeavor to succeed has outlasted the downcooling, and that empowerment indeed works.

Full text
Abstract:
Odds and Ids is a satirical novel of 419 pages that ridicules the tenets of psychotherapy and the beliefs and behaviors of psychotherapists. There are two story lines which overlap and converge at the end. Odd chapters tell the story of semi-sane Clinical Psychologist Nicholas K. Mavros and his alcoholic dog, Misty, the melancholy collie. Disillusioned by life, and in particular by the sham of psychotherapy, Nick decides to commit suicide in seven days by driving his burgundy van off the Billy Bopplemeyer Pier at sunset. He and Misty form a sacred pact to achieve that gallant end. Knowing that he will be dead in one week frees Nick at work and play to say what he is thinking and to act as he is feeling. He simply does not care any longer what others--friends, staff, and clients--think of his behavior. The odd chapters follow him day by day until he and Misty plunge or do not plunge into the cold waters of Puget Sound. The even chapters trace the rise and fall of the fictional Rumanian Bithwanians, a strange family that personifies postFreudian psychotherapy. Three generations of odd Bithwanians bungle through the bizarre world of mental health, seldom knowing the first thing about how to help another human being. Each Bithwanian is so enmeshed in the intricacies of his own theory that he's;fails to see his clients as animate human beings. The last Bithwanian, whose suicide opens the second friend of Nicholas Mavros, the errant protagonist, whose intent to commit suicide 3efines the central plot of the odd chapters.Their relationship, seen in retrospect, ties the two story lines together. The guiding idea throughout the novel is that the right to label others, and this alone, separates therapists and clients. The following are shot at in the novel: A) Therapists and their illusions.B) Clients and their unrealistic expectations.C) The non-training of future clinicians.D) Therapy, insurance companies, the union of psychologists, sex, love, religion, tradition, and existentialism.

Abstract:
This professes to be a poetic commentary to the Nemean odes of Pindar. It argues for a re-evaluation of this poet's epinikia as poetry and has taken as its principal focus the stuff that is critically ignored or devalued. Much that Pindar writes is difficult in that it is at once dense and dynamic, obedient to the strictures of a genre and yet never ruled by them. He invites commentary and scholars have for the most part centred their considerable efforts on decoding genius. There is as much literature on the poet and his relatively inaccessible work as there is an absence of poetic appreciation of it. The desire for a system of language, a master decoder of metaphor, imagery and thought processes, and the desire to find unity of thought, for Grundgedanken , for correspondences, structural parallels and polarities is the engine that drives the philologist reading these odes. But Pindar defies system.

Abstract:
A continuously scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (CSLDV) system is capable of rapidly obtaining spatially dense operating deflection shapes (ODSs) by continuously sweeping a laser spot from the system over a structure surface. This paper presents a new damage identification methodology for beams that uses their ODSs under sinusoidal excitation obtained by a CSLDV system, where baseline information of associated undamaged beams is not needed. A curvature damage index (CDI) is proposed to identify damage near a region with high values of the CDI at an excitation frequency. The CDI uses the difference between curvatures of ODSs associated with ODSs that are obtained by two different CSLDV measurement methods, i.e., demodulation and polynomial methods; the former provides rapid and spatially dense ODSs of beams, and the latter provides ODSs that can be considered as those of associated undamaged beams. Phase variables are introduced to the two methods for damage identification purposes. The proposed damage identification methodology was experimentally validated on a beam with damage in the form of machined thickness reduction. The damage and its region were successfully identified in neighborhoods of prominent peaks of CDIs at different excitation frequencies.

Abstract:
A worldwide round robin study is sponsored by the Society of Experimental Mechanics to detect damage in a composite plate with a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV). The aim of this round robin study is to explore the potential of a SLDV for detection of damage in composite plates. In this work, a curvature-based damage detection method with use of a continuously SLDV (CSLDV) is proposed. A CSLDV can be regarded as a real-time moving sensor, since the laser spot from the CSLDV continuously moves on a structure surface and measures velocity response. An operating deflection shape (ODS) of the damaged composite plate can be obtained from velocity response by the demodulation method. The ODS of the associated undamaged composite plate is obtained by using polynomials to fit the ODS of the damaged plate. A curvature damage index (CDI) using differences between curvatures of ODSs (CODSs) associated with the ODSs from the demodulation method and the polynomial fit is proposed to detect damage. With the proposed curvature-based damage detection method, locations of two possible damage are detected in areas with consistently high CDI values at two excitation frequencies, which are in good agreement with prescribed damage locations.

Abstract In this paper, we propose the new method to identify the Operating Deflection Shapes (ODSs) from the measurement data of time domain. At first, we present the identification scheme of ODSs based on a state-space model. Then the scheme is extended to identify the ODSs adaptively for the time-varying systems by using the URV Decomposition (URVD). Proposed scheme is able to decompose the deformation of a structure under operating condition into the underlying superposition of well excited frequency components. This paper introduces the algorithm and shows the effectiveness of our proposed scheme applyed for both synthesized and experimental data.

Abstract:
An effective non-model-based multiple damage identification method for beams by using a continuously scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (CSLDV) system is presented. Velocity response of a beam along a scan line under sinusoidal excitation is measured by the CSLDV system and a spatially dense operating deflection shape (ODS) of the beam along the scan line is obtained by the demodulation method from velocity response. The ODS of an associated undamaged beam is obtained by using a polynomial with a proper order to fit the ODS from the demodulation method. The curvature of an ODS (CODS) is used to identify abnormality induced by multiple damage. A curvature damage index (CDI) using differences between CODSs associated with ODSs that are obtained by the demodulation method and the polynomial fit is proposed to identify multiple damage. An auxiliary CDI obtained by averaging CDIs at different excitation frequencies is defined to further assist identification of multiple damage. Experiments on three beams with three damage on each beam in the form of three small cuts are conducted. Widths and depths of the three damage are varied from 3 mm to 9 mm with an increment of 3 mm and from 5% of thickness reduction to 15% with an increment of 5%, respectively, and their effects on ODSs, CODSs, and CDIs are investigated. Three frequencies close to natural frequencies of the beams and one randomly selected frequency that is not close to any natural frequencies of the beams are used as sinusoidal excitation frequencies. Each damage is successfully identified near regions with consistently high values of CDIs at different excitation frequencies when the damage is not close to a nodal point of an ODS. The three damage on each beam is successfully identified with the auxiliary CDI by obvious peaks at locations of the three damage.

Abstract:
Abstract This study proposes a novel general-purpose 3D continuously scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (CSLDV) system to measure 3D full-field vibration of a structure with a curved surface in a non-contact and fast way. The proposed 3D CSLDV system consists of three CSLDVs, a profile scanner, and an external controller, and is experimentally validated by measuring 3D full-field vibration of a turbine blade with a curved surface under sinusoidal excitation and identifying its operating deflection shapes (ODSs). A 3D zig-zag scan path is proposed for scanning the curved surface of the blade based on results from the profile scanner, and 6scan angles of mirrors in CSLDVs are adjusted based on relations among their laser beams to focus three laser spots at one location, and direct them to continuously and synchronously scan the proposed 3D scan path. A signal processing method that is referred to as the demodulation method is used to identify 3D ODSs of the blade. The first six ODSs from 3D CSLDV measurement have good agreement with those from a commercial 3D SLDV system with modal assurance criterion values larger than 95%. In the experiment, it took the 3D SLDV system about 900 seconds to scan 85 measurement points, and the 3D CSLDV system 115.5 seconds to scan 132,000 points, indicating that the 3D CSLDV system proposed in this study is much more efficient than the 3D SLDV system for measuring 3D full-field vibration of a structure with a curved surface.
