Abstract:

Abstract:
Commonly it is supposed that there is an inclusive "or" and an exclusive "or". However, doubts have been raised about this standard interpretation of "or". But, as far as I know, these doubts have never been elaborated. In this article I shall develope a critique of the standard interpretation. It is argued that the distinction between the inclusive and the exclusive understanding of sentences of the form "p or q" can be explained by making use of the inclusive "or" alone. This critique of the traditional point of view will be carried out by determining the sense in which the word "or" and sentences of the form "p or q" are used. Finally I shall discuss some special uses of "or" which are particularly challenging for the main thesis of this article.

Abstract:
Abstract For some decades, the authenticity of the German inscriptions of the castle Wildenberg in the Odenwald was rejected repeatedly. If they were created around 1200, they would be among the oldest known inscriptions written in German. This study attempts to verify the widely accepted assumption, that the inscriptions were ›forgeries‹ of the 19th century, based on epigraphic and linguistic criteria. It becomes apparent that evidence for ›forgery‹ cannot be provided based on the forms of the letters. A comparison of the preserved word and name forms shows, however, that the doubts concerning the authenticity of the inscriptions at the gate tower of the castle can be substantiated linguistically, whereas the inscriptions of the palas fit into the tradition of Middle High German texts.

Dephraseological derivatives or so-called one-word phrases?Historical and etymological analyses of verbal unitsThe paper deals with the issue of dephraseological derivation and the question of the so-called one--word phrases German term Einwortphraseologismen. Using etymological criteria, diachronic analyses of German verbal units of the type sich keinen abbrechen, es jdm. angetan haben, jdm. etwas aufbinden, jdm. einheizen were carried out. The current status of such units was determined in the historical context of the language. To the extent that the verbal expressions represent the results of regular metaphorical processes and are not syntactically elliptical formations, they were regarded as mono-lexical units. The metaphoric and at the same time elliptical one-word expressions can be described with the term one-word- phrases on etymologic grounds German term Einwortphraseologismen im engeren etymologischen Sinne.

Abstract:
The Greek name for the Trm͂mili people in Asia Minor was Λύκιοι, naturally explained by some Greek authors as from λύκος, ‘wolf’, either directly or via a personal name. This has inspired modern explanations by means of the same word. The first was that the Hittite country of Luwija was, just like Lycia, named after wolves, i.e. from a word for ‘wolf’ cognate with the Greek word, whereas the Akkadian name-form Lukku of another country have been influenced by the Greek form. The second explanation was that the Lycians, the Lycaonians and even the Hittite land of Lukkā were named after λύκος, but that this would be a word of pre-Greek origin. The third retains λύκος as a Greek word, making out that Lycians and Lycaonians, together with Lukkā, were originally Greek worshippers of a wolfish Apollo. The fourth turns the Lycians – and then also Lukkā – in the wake of the racist ‘Männerbund’ ideology, into a wolfish Greek ‘Jungmannschaft’, which became the ruling class in the later Lycia. This is certainly a fantasy without any linguistic or archaeological basis, and the explanation of Lukkā via a non-Greek but Proto-Anatolian *lukos ‛wolf’ is not a viable alternative. And there is no need to explain the name of the Bronze Age land of Luwiya via a putative Proto-Indo-European *lukwos either. Lukkā, Lykioi and Lykaones are more plausibly derived from the PIE root *leuk-/louk-/luk-, like English light. An independent attempt, which depicts the Lycians as former Aegean migrants who abandoned their Greek language, is based on two Greek loanwords, a putative link between a Lycian and a Greek word, and two phonological developments which have parallels in Greek, but are of a very different age. This is certainly not enough to corroborate that hypothesis.

Phraseologisms in the ‘Germanizing dictionary’ Verdeutschungswörterbuch by Joachim Heinrich Campe 1801The aim of the paper is a description of selected phraseologisms taken from the ‘Germanizing dictionary’ Verdeutschungswörterbuch by Joachim Heinrich Campe 1801. Word combinations offered there as equivalents words/expressions suggested as replacements are presented and interpreted. The research shows that many expressions, when compared with fixed word groups from contemporary dictionaries, are recorded in the same form and with the same meaning; there are also some items whose form and/or meaning has changed. There are, moreover, such phraseologisms which do not exist in contemporary German anymore.

Abstract The article focuses on liturgical questions caused by the Corona-pandemic and concentrates on the question of liturgical presence. For the Reformation, the presence of Christ/of God’s word and the presence of the congregation as an active subject in worship is central: Worship is all about the communio in a vertical and horizontal perspective and the participation of the whole congregation. Seen in this perspective, the discussion about the possibility of (Sunday) services in physical co-presence in 2020 was notably reduced. The article reflects (1) on bodily presence in digital contexts, (2) on the presence of the Church in the public sphere, and (3) on God’s presence in worship. The article aims to overcome dualistic concepts of ‘digital vs. analogue’ and reevaluate the chances of digital presence and physical co-presence in liturgical contexts.

Abstract:
AbstractIn his Sermones Augustine is often obliged to ward off misunderstandings which might arise from differences between standard Latin and the colloquial language of his listeners. This is why he opposes their wish to replace mulier with femina in the scriptures. He explains the matter as follows: it is only in popular speech that mulier means a married woman, whereas in the Bible women of any age—including the Virgin Mary—are called mulieres. Femina is a word which in Old Latin inspires reverence through its use in sacral contexts and which was preferred by poets from Augustan times onwards. Thus it is regarded as more elevated than the commoner mulier. Nevertheless, because mulier, unlike femina, agrees with Hebrew išah and Greek γυνη in being used only of human beings (though applicable to women of all ages and conditions), it remains the most appropriate Latin translation.

Stergiou, Giannoula. "Politics, ideology, and economy in the Pindaric world." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25827.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the work of Pindar from a political, ideological, and economic perspective. It is based on the premise that the society in which Pindar lived and the society he presents in the odes are not examples of fully embedded economies, and that elements of a market economy have an impact on both the society and the odes' ideology. A thorough analysis of the economics of Isthmian 2 shows that gift economy coexists with market economy. My thesis focuses on the odes dedicated to the Sicilian tyrants, Hieron of Syracuse and Theron of Akragas. The odes dedicated to Hieron have a different ideology, propaganda and economy in comparison with those composed for Theron. Hieron is presented as an almighty king whose values do not derive from inherited excellence (phya), but from his wealth. By analysing the reciprocal relationships in the mythological exempla, I argue that the poet reveals Hieron to be prone to market behaviour and suggests the dangers involved in pursuing obscene profit and in applying market logic to politics. In the case of Theron, Pindar treats him according to traditional aristocratic values. Theron is the most prominent person of an aristocratic family and closely follows the laws of the gift economy. He is a man whose values are inherited and his exceptional phya justifies his tyranny. A brief comparison of the concept of phya in the Aeginetan odes illustrates the different way the concept is applied in the case of a tyrant. In conclusion, Pindar is a poet who knows the wishes of his patrons and how to promote their propaganda, but he also lives in a society which functions not only under the laws of a fully embedded economy, but also under those of a market economy, and the logic of the latter has influenced his poetry. An ideological examination of his work uncovers the traces of this influence.

Truth is the first victim of war. Although we live in the 21st century, this perception has not changed. Whenever the medias admittance to trouble spots is refused, they depend on information released by the government. Under the pressure of reporting on current affairs, journalists tend to make notes of official announcements. As a result they run the risk of being misused as a propaganda medium. This issue deals with the relation between war correspondence and military public relations. Special emphasis is placed on current phenomenons like Embedded Journalism and the concept of the internet as a public countertendency

Warum finden manche junge Erwachsene, trotz guter Voraussetzungen, keinen passenden Beruf?

AbstractThroughout this book we have focused entirely on solving ODEs, without delving deeply into their origins or applications. In the present chapter we shift our attention to modeling with ODEs, by exploring a widely studied class of ODE models that describe the spread of infectious diseases. This group of models serves as a good example of how a complex phenomenon can be modeled using relatively simple systems of ODEs. We will derive these models based on a set of fundamental assumptions and discuss the limitations that arise from these assumptions. Although we consider a single application and a single class of models, the fundamental steps of the modeling process are applicable to a wide range of real-world phenomena.

Abstract:
AbstractStability is required for real world controlled systems as it ensures that those systems can tolerate small, real world perturbations around their desired operating states. This paper shows how stability for continuous systems modeled by ordinary differential equations (ODEs) can be formally verified in differential dynamic logic (). The key insight is to specify ODE stability by suitably nesting the dynamic modalities of with first-order logic quantifiers. Elucidating the logical structure of stability properties in this way has three key benefits: i) it provides a flexible means of formally specifying various stability properties of interest, ii) it yields rigorous proofs of those stability properties from ’s axioms with ’s ODE safety and liveness proof principles, and iii) it enables formal analysis of the relationships between various stability properties which, in turn, inform proofs of those properties. These benefits are put into practice through an implementation of stability proofs for several examples in KeYmaera X, a hybrid systems theorem prover based on .

Abstract:
Solving systems of non-autonomous ordinary differential equations (ODE) is a crucial and often challenging problem. Recently a new approach was introduced based on a generalization of the Volterra composition. In this work, we explain the main ideas at the core of this approach in the simpler setting of a scalar ODE. Understanding the scalar case is fundamental since the method can be straightforwardly extended to the more challenging problem of systems of ODEs. Numerical examples illustrate the method's efficacy and properties in the scalar case.

Abstract:
Nonlinear physical systems frequently perform around constant non-zero input-output operating conditions. This local behavior can be modeled using port-based nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). An ODE local solution around an specific input-output operating point can be obtained through the Volterra transfer function (VTF) model. In a past work a procedure for obtaining MIMO Volterra models from port-based nonlinear ODEs was presented. This previous work considered only systems operating at zero input-output conditions subject to linear inputs. In this work the process for obtaining MIMO Volterra transfer functions is extended for systems operating at non-zero input-output conditions. This extension also allows systems that are nonlinear functions of their inputs and input derivatives.

Abstract:
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Efficient and accurate ordinary differential equation (ODE) solvers are necessary for powertrain and vehicle dynamics modeling. However, current commercial ODE solvers can be financially prohibitive, leading to a need for accessible, effective, open-source ODE solvers designed for powertrain modeling. Rust is a compiled programming language that has the potential to be used for fast and easy-to-use powertrain models, given its exceptional computational performance, robust package ecosystem, and short time required for modelers to become proficient. However, of the three commonly used (&gt;3,000 downloads) packages in Rust with ODE solver capabilities, only one has more than four numerical methods implemented, and none are designed specifically for modeling physical systems. Therefore, the goal of the Differential Equation System Solver (DESS) was to implement accurate ODE solvers in Rust designed for the component-based problems often seen in powertrain modeling. DESS is a text-based software package that provides a flexible framework for building and solving systems of ODEs. This allows DESS to be included as a dependency for automotive powertrain models that require a variety of solvers and solver configurations. Seven explicit ODE solver methods have been implemented in DESS: Euler’s, Heun’s, midpoint, Ralston’s, classic Runge-Kutta, Bogacki-Shampine, and Cash-Karp. These represent five fixed-step methods and two adaptive-step methods. This paper shows that the solver implementations increase accuracy and computational efficiency compared to Euler's method when modeling a system of three thermal masses in Rust. DESS also includes features designed for modeling component-based physical systems. Users can define relationships between nodes in their system, which the package then translates into a system of equations, leading to simpler and more intuitive code. In the case of a three-thermal-mass system, the user can specify node thermal properties (e.g., thermal capacitance), how nodes are interconnected, and thermal conductance between nodes rather than providing a system of equations. The core contribution from this work is an open-source, text-based Rust package with ODE solvers for automotive powertrain modeling to support cost-free, fast, and accurate simulation.</div></div>

Abstract:
Crash pulses in automotive collisions often exhibit acceleration shapes somewhere between a sine and a step function and velocity shapes somewhere between a cosine and a linear decay. This is an example of real world behavior that is only somewhat like the familiar sine, cosine, or tangent shapes so commonly used in physical modeling. To adjust the mathematics to the problem, two familiar ordinary differential equations are merged to create a mathematical transition between trigonometric functions and polynomials by introducing one new parameter. The merged ODE produces a new set of “transitional trigonometry” functions that include both sets of familiar shapes and everything in between. For example, the sine function transitions smoothly into a constant or step function. The corresponding cosine function becomes a straight line. When the sine and cosine are plotted against each other the familiar unit circle undergoes a metamorphosis into a square. Integrals of these transitional trigonometric functions transition into a parabola, cubic polynomial, etc. These functions were developed to model a crash pulse in a vehicle collision, a task for which they work remarkably well. Basically, these functions are able to model a structure with force-deflection properties somewhere between a spring with linearly increasing force and a device that produces a constant force. One wonders what other applications in physics may exist besides crashing cars and what other pairs of physical models (represented by ODEs) might be merged together to produce other new and useful transitions.

Abstract:
The task of extracting overlapping and nested events has received significant attention in recent times, as prior research has primarily focused on extracting flat events, overlooking the intricacies of overlapping and nested occurrences. In this work, we present a new approach to Event Extraction (EE) by reformulating it as an object detection task on a table of token pairs. Our proposed one-stage event extractor, called ODEE, can handle overlapping and nested events. The model is designed with a vertex-based tagging scheme and two auxiliary tasks of predicting the spans and types of event trigger words and argument entities, leveraging the full span information of event elements. Furthermore, in the training stage, we introduce a negative sampling method for table cells to address the imbalance problem of positive and negative table cell tags, meanwhile improving computational efficiency. Empirical evaluations demonstrate that ODEE achieves the state-of-the-art performance on three benchmarks for overlapping and nested EE (i.e., FewFC, Genia11, and Genia13). Furthermore, ODEE outperforms current state-of-the-art methods in terms of both number of parameters and inference speed, indicating its high computational efficiency. To facilitate future research in this area, the codes are publicly available at https://github.com/NingJinzhong/ODEE.

In ASME 2018 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. Abstract:
An approach exploiting the relevant conservation laws associated with the wear due to sliding between deformable heat conducting bodies is presented in this work. The proposed methodology considers a pair of wearing objects in contact where their wear behaviors are encapsulated by semantically reduced one-dimensional, time-dependent ordinary differential equations (ODEs) as a replacement to the full mass conservation PDEs governing mass loss due to the various mechanisms present at the interface. At the same time, the conservation of energy and momentum are still expressed by the full form of the PDEs representing them. To assess the feasibility of this approach a reciprocating sliding contact pair of dissimilar materials is considered. The high dimensional thermo-mechanical problem is solved simultaneously and tightly coupled with the two ODE wear models for each of the wear pair bodies, thus enabling predictions of wear for both of them. Furthermore, an Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) approach has been used to produce the evolution of the wear fronts on both elements of the sliding contact pair through physics-informed mesh deformation consistent with the results computed in the previous step. The main advantage of this approach enables the usage of any low dimensional wear model (i.e, mechanical failure, phase transformation-based, etc.) in a computationally detailed and efficient manner.

Abstract:
The Overcoming Disadvantage in Early Childhood (ODEC) study is a longitudinal evaluation of the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation’s (ALNF) Early Language and Literacy (EL&L) program. The study was designed to answer the research question: What is the effect of the EL&L program on the development of language and literacy skills in preschool aged children? An integral component of this study was to develop a new measure of oral language and literacy - the Early Language and Literacy Developmental Index (ELLDI). The ELLDI was developed in recognition of the need for a best practice measure of oral language and literacy that was fit for purpose. This report documents the sum of work completed across the duration of the study from 2018-2022. The design of the study was based on the principles of a longitudinal outcome evaluation and had three components: a) design of the outcome measure: the ELLDI; b) interim results and recommendations; and c) final results, recommendations and reporting.

Abstract:
The expedition AL570 with the RV Alkor was carried out within the framework of the interdisciplinary DAM MGF-OSTSEE Project “Potential effects of closure for bottom fishing in the marine protected areas (MPAs) of the western Baltic Sea – baseline observations” funded by the Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Within MGF-OSTSEE a consortium of scientists from various institutions investigates how benthic ecosystems in Natura 2000 areas within the German exclusive economic zone develop after the exclusion of bottom trawling. Major goals of the project are i. the initial assessment of the environmental state and its variability in- and outside the three Natura 2000 areas Fehmarnbelt, Oder- and Rönnebank under the ongoing pressure of bottom trawling and ii. the general assessment of the effect of bottom trawling on benthic communities and benthic biogeochemical functioning as well as their development after fishery exclusion. The cruise AL570 concludes a series of three previous expeditions EMB238 (2020) and EMB267/268 (2021) and aimed to survey all components of the benthic food web including prokaryotes, protozoans, meiofauna and macrofauna, as well as sediment properties and biogeochemical processes in selected working areas in- and outside of the MPA. The working program comprised 156 station activities of various gears for biological and biogeochemical sampling of sediments. Solute exchange between the sediment and the water column was investigated using Landers and a novel underwater vehicle the Deep-Sea Rover (DSR) Panta Rhei. Investigations in the water column, seafloor observation and deployments of a dredge supplemented the station work. Due to stormy weather in situ solute fluxe measurements were not performed at the Rönnebank. (Alkor-Berichte ; AL570)

Abstract:
Phytophagous insects respond to chemicals from their host plants in a number of ways, including orientation or attraction in response to volatiles produced by plants. Orientation to odors from host plants may occur in order to locate food, mates, or oviposition sites. A detailed understanding of these behaviors are the chemical stimuli evoking them may provide useful means for attracting and trapping insect pests of crop plants. Heliothine moths (Helicoverpa and Heliothis herein) include a number of major pests of cultivated crop plants throughout the world. In North America, these include Heliothis virescens and Helicoverpa zea. In much of Eurasia (including Israel) Australia, and Africa, these include Helicoverpa armigera and Helicoverpa peltigera. These 4 species of concern all are attracted to odorants from host plants (Tingle and Mitchell 2992, Mitchell et al 1991, 1992 BARD feasibility study report). Host plant chemicals also play a role in the sexual behavior of Helicoverpa species. Synthesis and possibly release of sex pheromone in H. zea and H. phloxiphaga is stimulated by kairomones from hosts plants (Raina 1988, 1992). Pheromona scent marking on host plants also occurs in H. virescens and H. zea. Studies of several other insects, including the cabbage looper Trichoplusia ni, have a variety of other behaviors may occur in association with host plants, including the use of plants as sexual rendesvous sites and of direct involvement of plant chemicals in sexual behavior. Some pest species of moths also may use host plants as adult food sources. These studies were undertaken to develop a more thorough understanding of how Heliothis/Helicoverpa moths use host plant odorants to locate and select foods, mates, and oviposition sites. We used Heliothis virescens and Helicoverpa zea in Florida, and Helicoverpa armigera and Helicoverpa peltigera in Israel as objects of study because of their pest status. It is hoped that such an understanding will provide direction for work to discover and develop novel means to control these pests through behavioral manipulation. The specific objectives of the proposal were to 1) identify host odor affects on known Heliothine sexual behavior, 2) identify novel sexual behavior that is how dependent, 3) isolate and characterize host kairomones important to pest Heliothine host and mate-location behavior, and 4) investigate female attraction to males.
