Abstract:
Ode to r/r is a presentation of two parts. the first, three poems by the author: Handle Attachment, Ice and Applicate. The second is an essay titled 'Language that talks'. The essay concerns itself with investigation and discussion of two German words, rausch and rauschen. These two words are considered in relation to their etymological, poetico-philosophical and historic constitutions. Furthermore, they act as a foil from which a consideration of the poetic operation of language unfolds. Via a variety of apparently digressive mechanisms, and brief forays past various subjects, the essay makes certain preliminary observations about possibilities and strategies available for poetic truth and consciousness, as well as the forces which act upon it.

Abstract:
The project entitled PEACOCK PILGRIMAGE comprises two components: the screenplay for a feature film, entitled Peacock Angel, and an exegesis, which explores the underlying influences on the screenplay. Peacock Angel is the story of a young girl, Deva, who grew up in India with a fascination for peacocks, especially the fictional peacock angel. After a time of isolation as a teenager in the West, she returns to India to reconcile with a tragic past and reconnect with her true longings. India is the place that mends her wounded heart. Within the symbolic realms of the screenplay Deva, as the central character, becomes the peacock ‘goddess’. Her journey allows us to explore layers within the themes of identity, memory and fantasy. The project holds an East/West theme, of disillusionment with Western material values and appreciation of the depth of Indian culture, of “the land where the heart is king”. Field research on the peacock, the key motif of the project, has led me on a journey through India that has been full of synchronicity and given me a particularly rich taste of her timeless culture. The exegesis elaborates on aspects of my journey, on the concepts of synchronicity and pilgrimage, and on the motif of peacock – highlighting its symbolic and mythical meanings. It also situates Peacock Angel within the field of world cinema, in the category of Western films made in India and the genre of magic realism.

Abstract:
This dissertation is the result of the master's research done about the poem "Ode marítima" by Álvaro de Campos, Fernando Pessoas heteronymous. The poem was studied under theoretical considerations that could sustain the artistic content of that poem. In other words, the theoretical contributions by Walter Benjamin, Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe, Theodor W. Adorno, etc, aims to provide a poetic research discourse, respecting the literary manifestation in question the poem. During the research "Ode marítima" showed different themes. These themes were studied separately. They are: "Imagination," "Absolute Pier", "Dream", "Strength" and "Childhood". For each subject a chapter has been prepared. All subjects studied converge to the apprehension of Álvaro de Campos "Ode marítima" as a poem that contains the singularity of this heteronymous. Thus, the survey reaches other poems by Álvaro de Campos, making possible the conjecture about the poetry of this heteronymous. The research aims to gain the studies of Alvaro de Campos poetry, pointing out its peculiarities, as done about by the "Ode marítima" and being aware that this is one proposal among many others as valid and as enriching as this one

Abstract:
Oda kao umjetnička forma, lijepo i uzvišeno, razum i mašta, dinamički imatematički uzvišeno, uzvišenost forme i uzvišenost ideje, subjektivizacija uzvišenosti, nekisu od ključnih pojmova kojima se bavi ovo istraživanje. Međutim, u širem kontekstu, onoobuhvata i pojmove individualnog i opšteg, vječnog i prolaznog, konačnog i beskonačnog, ljudskog i mitskog, ljudskog i božanskog, čovjeka i prirode.
Ode as an artistic form, beautiful and sublime, reason and imagination, dynamically and mathematically sublime, the sublimity of a form and the sublimity of anidea, subjectivity of the sublime, are some of the key terms of this study. However, insomewhat wider context, it also includes the individual and the universal, eternal andtemporal, finite and infinite, human and mythical, human and divine, man and nauture. Allthese questions are intertwined in the sublime frame of an ode, which, by its own existence, has marked the brightest spots of each epoch and written them in the magnificent chronicle ofhuman history. This work represents the retrospect of that golden chronicle in which our ownepoch will hopefully write a few lines.

Abstract:
The musical ode, which developed during the 1660s and 1670s as a means of celebrating occasions of particular significance (often by setting a specially written text), remained popular throughout the eighteenth century, and can be regarded as the earliest form of large-scale secular choral music to have developed in England. This dissertation discusses the nature of the genre (including its relationship with the poetical ode), and surveys the contexts in which odes were composed and performed. It is supplemented by a catalogue which lists some 270 examples of the genre. Among the earliest odes were those written for performance at the court in London. These have already been the subject of musicological study, but although they were the biggest stylistic influence on the other odes written during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, they were not quite the earliest examples of the species. At the University of Oxford, the practice of performing specially composed odes to enhance academic ceremonial dates from at least 1669, and the custom continued throughout the following century. The odes on St Cecilia's Day also originate in the late seventeenth century, but although the works performed in London between 1683 and 1701 have received some scholarly attention, odes on the same theme written later in the century, along with works performed at a number of provincial centres, have not hitherto been discussed in the context of the wider ode genre. Also neglected have been the birthday odes performed at the Vice-regal court in Dublin during the eighteenth century. These complement the London court odes, but have not previously been listed or discussed in detail. Other odes were written for charitable causes, and to commemorate a miscellaneous array of occasions, including military victories and the inauguration of new buildings. In addition, in the latter half of the eighteenth century, some composers responded to developments in the poetical ode by setting libretti which had no 'occasional' inspiration, but which were notable literary achievements in their own right.

Lee, Hock Seng. "An ODE/MOL PDE Template For Soil Physics." Thesis, Griffith University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/365588.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the thesis is to find a method, in conjunction with the ordinary differential equation (ODE) based method of lines (MOL) solution of Richards’ equation, to model the steep wetting front infiltration in very dry soils, accurately and efficiently. Due to the steep pressure head or steep water volumetric content gradients, highly nonlinear soil hydraulic properties and the rapid movement of the wetting front, accurate solutions for infiltration into a dry soil are usually difficult to obtain. Additionally, such problems often require very small time steps and large computation times. As an enhancement to the used ODE/MOL approach, Higher Order Finite Differencing, Varying Order Finite Differencing, Vertical Scaling, Adaptive Schemes and Non-uniform Stretching Techniques have been implemented and tested in this thesis. Success has been found in the ability of Vertical Scaling to simulate very steep moving front solution for the Burgers’ equation. Unfortunately, the results also show that Vertical Scaling needs significant research and improvement before their full potential in routine applications for difficult nonlinear problems, such as Richard’s equation with very steep moving front solution, can be realized. However, we have also shown that the use of the composed form of RE and a 2nd order finite differencing for the first order derivative approximation is conducive for modelling steep moving front problem in a very dry soil. Additionally, with the combination of an optimal influx value at the edges of the inlet, the ODE/MOL approach is able to model a 2-D infiltration in very dry soils, effectively and accurately. Furthermore, one of the strengths of this thesis is the use of a MATLAB PDE template. Implementing the ODE/MOL approach via a MATLAB PDE template has shown to be most suitable for modelling of partial differential equations. The plug and play mode of modifying the PDE template for solving time-dependent partial differential equations is user-friendly and easy, as compared to more conventional approaches using Pascal, Fortran, C or C++. The template offers greater modularity, flexibility, versatility, and efficiency for solving PDE problems in both 1-D and 2-D spatial dimensions. Moreover, the 2-D PDE template has been extended for irregular shaped domains.

Abstract:
Cancer is one of the most prevalent and deadly diseases in the United States today. There are many approaches to treating cancer, but here we focus on biochemotherapy which is a combination of chemotherapy and immunotherapy. The intent of immunotherapy is to boost the body’s natural resistance to cancer which is often repressed by the regulatory branch of the immune system. Here we show that this repression may be overcome by chemotherapy followed closely by immunotherapy. However, giving immunotherapy at the wrong time can may actually promote tumor growth.

Music is part of human culture and has been around for several thousand years. In spite of its strong emotional appeal, the history of this human characteristic, and the source of its allure remain elusive. This thesis is a report from the front lines of research into the origins of human music, presenting four popular scenarios for the source of music. Music is treated as a homolog for gibbon song, as a co-evolver with language, as a sexually selected adaptation and as a cultural artifact that elicits universally reaching, culturally exclusive emotional responses from listeners.

D'Augustine, Anthony Frank. "MATLODE: A MATLAB ODE Solver and Sensitivity Analysis Toolbox." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/83081.

Abstract:
Sensitivity analysis quantifies the effect that of perturbations of the model inputs have on the model's outputs. Some of the key insights gained using sensitivity analysis are to understand the robustness of the model with respect to perturbations, and to select the most important parameters for the model. MATLODE is a tool for sensitivity analysis of models described by ordinary differential equations (ODEs). MATLODE implements two distinct approaches for sensitivity analysis: direct (via the tangent linear model) and adjoint. Within each approach, four families of numerical methods are implemented, namely explicit Runge-Kutta, implicit Runge-Kutta, Rosenbrock, and single diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta. Each approach and family has its own strengths and weaknesses when applied to real world problems. MATLODE has a multitude of options that allows users to find the best approach for a wide range of initial value problems. In spite of the great importance of sensitivity analysis for models governed by differential equations, until this work there was no MATLAB ordinary differential equation sensitivity analysis toolbox publicly available. The two most popular sensitivity analysis packages, CVODES [8] and FATODE [10], are geared toward the high performance modeling space; however, no native MATLAB toolbox was available. MATLODE fills this need and offers sensitivity analysis capabilities in MATLAB, one of the most popular programming languages within scientific communities such as chemistry, biology, ecology, and oceanogra- phy. We expect that MATLODE will prove to be a useful tool for these communities to help facilitate their research and fill the gap between theory and practice.

Gregori, Daniele. "N=2 gauge theories from the ODE-IM correspondence perspective." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2018. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/15820/.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This report is written as a project to conclude the three year bachelor part of a five year degree in engineering and will as such target students finishing their three year bachelor degrees. The main topic of this project is traffic simulation through numerical analysis, with the accompanying subtopics time integration, eigenvalue analysis and computation complexity. The tool used through the project is Matlab computational software. This project features two general traffic models where the first is based on a system of ordinary differential equations (ODE’s) and the second one is based on a system of delay differential equations (DDE’s). The project will highlight the implications of driver considerations in terms of stability, stability related to system size, stability related to reaction times and the relation between the large system stability and increasing the (h; k) values of the model.   (h; k) values of the model
The ODE- and DDE models are based on the same model with the only exception that the DDE model features reaction times. They are defined by consideration forces and sub-consideration forces. The values (h; k) determines the number of cars that each driver considers and therefore adds to the system as additional terms that are of the same form as the consideration forces, hence the sub prefix. The basic case where there are no sub-considerations involved is called the base case of the system and equals to (h; k) = (1; 1). The (h; k) of the system is determining the matrix B in equation (11) by the number of sub diagonals h and super diagonals k that are filled by weights of the forces. The time integrations can result in three base cases, unstable, stable oscillating and exponentially stable. These cases refer to the behavior of all system velocities. The unstable case can for limited time frames predict collisions between cars but otherwise diverge and cannot generally be used. Oscillating stable systems reach a constant velocity after a settling time and fits well into a realistic scenario. The exponential case reaches a constant velocity the fastest and is therefore the sought after solution. Both models are similar in this regard apart from the fact that the DDE model generally have a lot more system energy. Figures 1 and 4 are empirical proof that the models works as defined and can predict some traffic behavior. An interesting observation during testing was that the ODE exponential case would always remain exponential no matter the multiplication (; ; ) = C(; ; ), the only difference would be the system energy since larger acting forces are coupled with larger energies. The DDE model however is dependent on the system energy for stability since the delay sets a system energy limit for stability since too large forces coupled with delay will not achieve the optimum distance d. The system stability analysis can be reduced in both models to analyzing the homogeneous and particular parts separate. The expansions confirms in both cases what the time integrations shows and can give an idea of how the stability changes with one parameter changing. However, this is where the DDE model behaves completely different from the ODE model. For the ODE case it is possible to plot a complete eigenvalue chart whereas the DDE case has an infinite number of eigenvalues and is therefore impossible to completely chart. A conclusion that is in common between the models is that Fd(t) inherently is dominant and should as such be at lower priority compared to the other consideration forces in order to help system stability. Comparisons to the spring equation revealed that systems that prioritize Fd(t) too high converges to a system of particles in a chain connected by springs with no friction giving the observed behavior. Prioritizing F fr(t) help stability in both cases with the exception that DDE case will be stable for a sub interval (since the top limit comes from the system total energy) within the expansion whereas the ODE case remains stable through the whole intervall. The problems that come with larger systems are stability- and computation complexity related. All through the project has the models focused on the base case with no sub-considerations. The thesis is that adding sub-considerations will again stabilize an unstable system with the addition that each consecutive weight should deflate its value exponentially. The results proves that an unstable system can be stabilized by simply increasing the (h; k) of the system. This can have applications when the optimal weights are not enough to stabilize a large system. When computing the eigenvalues for large systems it puts strain on the algorithm ’eig’. According to [1] is the computation time complexity proportional to n3. What the resulting fit shows is that the relation is more quadratic than cubic and the reason is described to be the appearance of the system matrix for the base case. The matrix structure is similar to the one of the upper Hessenbergs which as a result saves time when transforming the input matrix which is the reason why the complexity is weakly cubic.

Abstract:
Three- and four-derivative k-step Hermite-Birkhoff-Obrechkoff (HBO) methods are constructed for solving stiff systems of first-order differential equations of the form y'= f(t,y), y(t0) = y0. These methods use higher derivatives of the solution y as in Obrechkoff methods. We compute their regions of absolute stability and show the three- and four-derivative HBO are A( 𝜶)-stable with 𝜶 > 71 ° and 𝜶 > 78 ° respectively. We conduct numerical tests and show that our new methods are more efficient than several existing well-known methods.

Abstract:
One-step 3-stage Hermite-Birkhoff-Taylor methods, denoted by HBT( p)3, are constructed for solving nonstiff systems of first-order differential equations of the form y' = f( x, y), y(x0) = y0. The method uses derivatives y' to y(p--2) as in Taylor methods and is combined with a 3-stage Runge-Kutta method of order 3. Forcing a Taylor expansion of the numerical solution to agree with an expansion of the true solution leads to Taylor- and Runge-Kutta-type order conditions, which are then reorganized into Vandermonde-type linear systems whose solutions are the coefficients of the method. The new method yields impressive results with regards to intervals of absolute stability. A detailed formulation of variable step size (VS) fixed order HBT( p)3 is presented, as well as the formulation of variable-step variable-order (VSVO) HBT(p)3. Several problems often used to test high order ODE solvers on the basis the number of steps, CPU time, maximum global error, and maximum global energy error are considered. The results stress that both VS and VSVO HBT(p)3 methods are superior to Dormand-Prince DP (8,7)13M and Taylor method of order p, denoted by T( p). To obtain results at high precision, high order VS and VSVO HBT( p)3 methods have been implemented in multiple precision. These numerical results clearly show the benefit of formulating a method by adding high order derivatives to Runge-Kutta method.

Abstract:
Vector Quantization importance has been increasing and it is becoming a vital element in the process of classification and clustering of different types of information to help in the development of machines learning and decisions making, however the different techniques that implements Vector Quantization have always come short in some aspects. A lot of researchers have turned their heads towards the idea of creating a Vector Quantization mechanism that is fast and can be used to classify data that is rapidly being generated from some source, most of the mechanisms depend on a specific style of neural networks, this research is one of those attempts. One of the dilemmas that this technology faces is the compromise that has to be made between the accuracy of the results and the speed of the classification or quantization process, also the complexity of the suggested algorithms makes it very hard to implement and realize any of them on a hardware that can be used as a fast-online classifier which can keep up with the speed of the information being presented to the system, an example for such information sources would be high speed processors, and computer networks intrusion detection systems. This research focuses on creating a Vector Quantizer using neural networks, the neural network that is used in this study is a novel one and has a unique feature that comes from the fact that it is based solely on a set of ordinary differential equations. The input data will be injected in those equations and the classification would be based on finding the equilibrium points of the system with the presence of those input patterns. The elimination of conditional statements in this neural network would mean that the implementation and the execution of the classification process of this technique would have one single path that can accommodate any value. A single execution path will provide easier algorithm analysis and open the possibility to realizing it on a pure analog circuit that can have an operation speed able to match the speed of incoming information and classify the data in a real time fashion. The details of this dynamical system will be provided in this research, also the shortcomings that we have faced and how we overcame them will be explained in particulars. Also, a drastic change in the way of looking at the speed vs. accuracy compromise has been made and presented in this research, aiming towards creating a technique that can produce accurate results with high speeds.

Full text
Abstract:
Two streamline, ordinary differential equation (ODE) models for detonation, the Chan-Kirby model and the straight streamline approach of Watt et al., are extended to a multiphase system of equations. These multiphase equations, with realistic equations of state, are used to better capture the heterogeneities in non-ideal explosives used in mining applications. Streamline ODE multidimensional models are normally obtained by reducing the partial differential equations (PDEs) describing the motion of the material to ODEs by making approximations about some of the physics of the problem. These models are referred to as reduced ODE models in this work and are the primary focus of this research into fast, efficient solutions of non-ideal explosives. In the development of these reduced order forms, some terms in the full equations have been removed for analytical convenience. Although this is not always the result of a formal order of magnitude analysis, this somewhat empirical approach is justified by simulation studies. In particular, by demonstrating that in a variety of benchmark problems, the reduced order ODEs give similar results to those obtained from the much more complex, full order PDE models. Further support is obtained by comparing the reduced order solution with experimental results. Comparisons with multiphase direct numerical simulations and experiments are undertaken to investigate the effect of the approximations and assumptions made in the derivation of the models. Both models produce comparable diameter effect curves for two different non-ideal explosives, EM120D and ANFO, in unconfined conditions. Empirical assumptions in the Chan-Kirby model can be eliminated but investigation shows that the straight streamline multiphase extension is based on better approximations for non-ideal explosives. This latter approach also gives better prediction of the diameter effect curve and detonation driving zone shape. The multiphase straight streamline model is then extended to model confined multiphase detonations, with realistic equations of state for the confining material, and predicts most strong confinement examples well. Future work of extending to curved streamlines and including confinement other than strong or weak is discussed.

Abstract:
Control and diagnosis of complex systems demand accurate information of the system state to enable efficient control and to detect system malfunction. Physical sensors are expensive and some quantities are hard or even impossible to measure with physical sensors. This has made model-based estimation an attractive alternative. Model based observers are sensitive to errors in the model and since the model complexity has to be kept low to enable use in real-time applications, the accuracy of the models becomes limited. Further, modeling is difficult and expensive with large efforts on model parametrization, calibration, and validation, and it is desirable to design robust observers based on existing models. An experimental investigation of an engine application shows that the model have stationary errors while the dynamics of the engine is well described by the model equations. This together with frequent appearance of sensor offsets have led to a demand for systematic ways of handling operating point dependent stationary errors, also called biases, in both models and sensors. Systematic design methods for reducing bias in model based observers are developed. The methods utilize a default model, described by systems of ordinary differential equations (ODE) or differential algebraic equations (DAE), and measurement data. A low order description of the model deficiencies is estimated from the default model and measurement data, which results in an automatic model augmentation. The idea is then to use the augmented model in observer design, yielding reduced stationary estimation errors compared to an observer based on the default model. Three main results are: a characterization of possible model augmentations from observability perspectives, a characterization of augmentations possible to estimate from measurement data, and a robustness analysis with respect to noise and model uncertainty. An important step is how the bias is modeled, and two ways of describing the bias are analyzed. The first is a random walk and the second is a parameterization of the bias. The latter can be viewed as an extension of the first and utilizes a parameterized function that describes the bias as a function of the operating point of the system. By utilizing a parameterized function, a memory is introduced that enables separate tracking of aging and operating point dependence. This eliminates the trade-off between noise suppression in the parameter convergence and rapid change of the offset in transients. Direct applications for the parameterized bias are online adaptation and offline calibration of maps commonly used in engine control systems. The methods are evaluated on measurement data from heavy duty diesel engines. A first order model augmentation is found for an ODE of an engine with EGR and VGT. By modeling the bias as a random walk, the estimation error is reduced by 50 % for a certification cycle. By instead letting a parameterized function describe the bias, better estimation accuracy and increased robustness is achieved. For an engine with intake manifold throttle, EGR, and VGT and a corresponding stiff ODE, experiments show that it is computationally beneficial to approximate the fast dynamics with instantaneous relations, transforming the ODE into a DAE. A main advantage is the possibility to use more than 10 times longer step lengths for the DAE based observer, without loss of estimation accuracy. By augmenting the DAE, an observer that achieves a 55 % reduction of the estimation error during a certification cycle is designed.

Abstract:
The present research has the aim of studying Simonides Ode to Scopas in Platos Protagoras. Throughout the dialogue the difference between sophistic and philosophic discourse is highlighted by Socrates. Dialectic sections which study the areté, are intermingled with rhetorical sections in which political areté is approached. While in the former, human excellence is examined, in the sophistic sections the investigation is upon civic nómos. Simonides poem praises the healthy man that acts according to the nómos, as opposed to the morally irreprehensible man. Through Socrates analysis of the poem, poetic discourse is compared to the rhetorical one. It can be concluded that dialectic discourse is the only method through which it is possible to reach the truth of areté.

This work aims to demonstrate the reason why Ode Marítima is considered the most important poem of the Sensacionism Moviment, created by Fernando Pessoa and Mário de Sá-Carneiro in the early twentieth-century, by establishing a connection between actual and original, modern and primitive, time and no-time dimensions, chronological time and mythical time. In order to do that, some of the theoretical frameworks used were: the studies of the rhythm structure of this ode, by José Augusto Seabra and Nicolás Extremera Tapia; the studies of oral poetry, developed by Paul Zumthor; Fernando Pessoa and Mário de Sá-Carneiro s writings about Sensacionism; Micea Eliade s studies about myth; and the philosophical view of man s way of life transformations according to Friedrich Nietzsche. In the first chapter, we intended to reflect on the transformations poetry has passed through the time in order to, in the next chapter, explain and justify the sensacionist proposal of a modern art that is based on sensation strength, and intends to touch the sensorial body of its receptor. Finally, we proceeded to an analytic reading of the corpus: the Ode Marítima. We concluded that the poem materializes the Sensacionism by proposing us a return to the origins of the poetry. Thus, Álvaro de Campos modern experiment is access to the archaic rituals rhythm: song, voice, dance, body pure sensation, pure poetry. Such an experiment gives us the possibility of a more conscious perception of the complex way of modern life

This thesis presents a solver to handle constrained-state-space ODEs. This solver locates the points where any of the states go outside of the constraining set, and then, transfers the control from the continuous time ODE to the function governing the behavior of the system on the boundaries of the constrained set. The main contribution of this solver is found simulating complex right-hand-sided ODEs for long periods of time.

Abstract:
In this dissertation the topic of reduced ODE models corresponding to a family of one-dimensional lubrication equations derived by Muench et al. 06'' is addressed. This family describes the dewetting process of nanoscopic thin liquid films on hydrophobic polymer substrates due to the presence of several intermolecular forces and takes account of different ranges of slip-lengths at the polymer substrate interface. Reduced ODE models derived from underlying lubrication equations allow for an efficient analytical and numerical investigation of the latest stage of the dewetting process: coarsening dynamics of the remaining droplets. We first give an asymptotical derivation of these models and use them to investigate the influence of slip-length on the coarsening dynamics. In the second part of the talk we present a new geometric approach which can be used for an alternative derivation and justification of above reduced ODE models and is based on a center-manifold reduction recently applied by Mielke and Zelik 08'' to a certain class of semilinear parabolic equations. One of the main problems for a rigorous justification of this approach is investigation of the spectrum of a lubrication equation linearized at the stationary solution, which describes physically a single droplet. The corresponding eigenvalue problem turns out to be a singularly perturbed one with respect to a small parameter epsilon tending to zero. For this problem we show existence of an epsilon-dependent spectral gap between a unique exponentially small eigenvalue and the rest of the spectrum.

Abstract:
The efficiency with which the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations (ODE) can be generated depends to a large extent on the effectiveness of the stepsize adjustment strategy that is used. In this thesis the relative performance of a family of stepsize adjustment strategies is examined. Included in this family is a new strategy. A distinctive feature of its formulation is the incorporation of a mechanism to correct for any persistent deviation of a prescribed solution quality measure from its desired value. The evaluation of the various strategies is undertaken through an extensive set of numerical experiments which use both single processor and multiple processor ODE solution procedures.

Abstract:
In the final stanza of John Keats’s “Ode on Melancholy,” there are capitalized emotions such as “Joy” that are characters within the poem. William Blake’s “Songs of Innocence” and “Songs of Experience” include personified emotions in much the same way. In this paper I will define allegory as using a “radical dispersonification” in which personified objects within the poem point to something abstract that exists on its own, outside the context of the poem. Given the similarity of Keats’s poem and Blake’s “Songs,” there is the possibility that as Romantics, Blake influenced Keats. In the sense that Blake’s “Songs” are ultimately a religious or political allegory, which Blake manifests as states of “Innocence” and “Experience,” and Keats’s poem is allegorical in the sense that it is about an abstract state called “Melancholy” that he has experienced as a poet.

The critical analysis section of this dissertation seeks to define the ode using examples in translation from Greek and Latin odes and examples in English written from the 1500s to the 2000s. Although most definitions of the ode contend that this subgenre of the lyric is an occasional poem of praise that includes a meditative or mythological element, the ode is far more complex. An ode is an occasional poem, but it works to privilege rather than strictly praise its subject, allowing for the speaker's ambivalence toward the subject. Meditation is a key element of the ode, since the poet uses the subject as a means for moving to the meditation or as a conduit through which the meditation occurs. The meditation in the poem is also a way for the poet or speaker to negotiate the relationship between the subject and herself; thus, the ode is concerned with power, since the poet must place herself or the speaker in relation to the subject. Power thus may be granted to either the speaker or the subject; the poet names and speaks of the subject, and often the poet names and speaks of himself in relation to the subject. Additionally, odes usually contain some exhortation, generally directed to the subject if not to those surrounding the reader or capable of "listening in" to the performance of the poem. This definition, it should be noted, is intended to be fluid. In order for a poem to be relevant to its age, it must either adhere to or usefully challenge the contemporary concerns. Thus, while many of the odes discussed will contain the elements of this definition, others will work against the definition. In the remainder of the introduction, I examine ancient models and twentieth- and twenty-first century examples of the ode as a means of exploring what an ode is and how it can undermine the elements of the definition and still work as a poem of this subgenre. In the second section of the dissertation are lyric poems, many of which fit in varying degrees the definition laid out in the critical analysis.

This dissertation argues that the book as we know it will not cease to be. It is somehow a manifesto praising the artifact of words in the scope of literature and scientific culture. The present work chooses Umberto Eco and Jean-Claude-C?rriere?s book N?o contem com o fim do livro (2010) as cognitive operator. It presents a brief overview of the evolution of the informational supports and narrates a history of the book as constructed by complex bases; it also highlights the permanent and current state of the book having in mind the concept of contemporary as proposed by the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben, as opposed by the ephemeral character of the technological informational supports; moreover, it elects the book as a tool for the learning of Science and Culture, as a school for life, as put by Edgar Morin when referring to the Romance genre, in some of his works regarding Education; it presents as supporting evidence, two interviews with book-lover scholars from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Science thinkers like Edgar Morin, Maria da Concei??o de Almeida, Ilya Prigogine, Giorgio Agamben, Pierre Levy, Umberto Eco, Roger Chartier, among others are used as sources of theoretical references. The dissertation places itself in the interface between Literature, Complexity and Education.
