Full textSeamounts are ubiquitous topographic features across all ocean basins. They rise steeply through the water column from abyssal depths. Depending on their size, shape and summit depths, seamounts reportedly have an impact on the physical flow regimes which may promote the aggregation of zooplankton, micronekton, and top predators above or in the immediate vicinity of their summits. Micronekton form a key trophic link between zooplankton and top marine predators and are divided into four broad categories: gelatinous plankton, crustaceans, cephalopods and mesopelagic fishes. The vertical and horizontal distributions, assemblages and trophic relationships of micronekton were investigated at two shallow seamounts of the south-western Indian Ocean. La Pérouse seamount is a steep bathymetric feature rising from a deep seabed located at 5000 m and with a summit depth at ~ 60 m below the sea surface. The seamount is located at the north-western periphery of the oligotrophic Indian South Subtropical Gyre province. MAD-Ridge seamount (“thus called in this study”), is ~ 240 m below the sea surface rising from a base located at ~2400 m. The seamount is located within an “eddy corridor” to the south of Madagascar within the productive East African Coastal Province. Chapter 4 investigates the influence of mesoscale eddies, Madagascar shelf and shallow seamounts on the distribution of micronekton using an acoustic approach. It is demonstrated that mesoscale eddies and the continental shelf may show enhanced acoustic densities of micronekton compared to MAD-Ridge seamount. The micronekton acoustic densities were also greater at MAD-Ridge compared to La Pérouse, in accordance with the difference in productivity between the two sites. Chapter 5 is dedicated to the micronekton assemblages and diel migration patterns of micronekton communities. It is shown that, while the shallow scattering layer (0-200 m) consisted of oceanic micronekton species; the summits and flanks of La Pérouse and MAD-Ridge showed presence of resident or seamount-associated species both during the day and night. I also discussed the different migration strategies of micronekton. Chapter 6 investigates the stable isotope patterns of mesopelagic communities at La Pérouse and MAD-Ridge. Despite the differing productivity at La Pérouse and MAD-Ridge, gelatinous organisms, crustaceans, smaller-sized squids and mesopelagic fishes exhibited trophic levels ranging from 2 to 4 at both seamounts. This thesis highlights important knowledge gaps on seamount ecosystems and ecological patterns associated to shallow seamounts. It also underlines the importance of studying seamount ecosystems of the south-western Indian Ocean in order to promote management and conservation measures for a sustainable use of such specific environments

Full textTo understand the functioning of an ecosystem, it is essential to understand the organization of its associated food web. While the distribution of primary production and top predators in the Southwest Indian Ocean's oceanic waters (10-60 ° S, 35-90 ° E) are well known, a lack of knowledge remains regarding the distribution of mid-trophic level organisms, despite their ecological (biological pump and key trophic role) and potentially economic (commercial fisheries in the near future) importance. To fill this gap, this work focused on the horizontal and vertical distribution and composition of micronektonic communities in this region. Micronekton comprises relatively small organisms (1 to 20 cm long) able to swim freely without being unduly affected by currents. Micronekton distributions have been studied at meso- and large-scale using acoustic recordings (38 kHz). A vertical structure in three layers has been identified ; the intensity and thickness of these layers vary depending on the considered time period (diel migration) and ocean conditions (meso-scale oceanic eddies and large-scale oceanic fronts). Horizontaly, the Southwestern Indian Ocean harbours the richest waters (10-800 m) in subtropical latitudes in summer and winter times. Since every organism has its own ecological characteristics, it was important to separatly describe the distribution of biological groups composing micronekton. A bi-frequency acoustic approach (38 and 120 kHz) allowed the distinction of micronektonic crustaceans from small mesopelagic gas-filled swimbladder fish in waters east of Kerguelen where micronektonic crustaceans where dominant in terms of overall acoustic density. Two distinct types of vertical structure were highlighted : an aggregative and a layer structure. Micronektonic crustaceans were characterized by layering, day and night, while other organisms (gas-filled swimbladder fish in particular) exhibited structure mixing aggregates and layers during the day, but only composed of layers during the night. In summary, the acoustic approach used in this work helped to describe the distribution and composition of micronektonic organisms and provides an essential knowledge base on the micronekton of the southwest Indian Ocean

Full textCoral reefs support millions of people’s livelihood around the world. However, the effects of climate change and the increase in frequency and intensity of disturbances are leading to their accelerated degradation and to the decline of scleractinian coral communities. Current concerns relate to the resilience of these vulnerable ecosystems. In this context, it is essential to improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying maintenance of coral communities, which may also improve conservation and management efforts that are urgently needed for these ecosystems. This PhD work aims to analyze demographic processes, including recruitment, and the structure of coral assemblages at several scales in different island environments of the southwestern Indian Ocean region. These descriptors were addressed through ecological succession on reefs and underwater lava flows of Reunion Island, and through the assessment of the reef recovery potential of five island systems in the area. Results show that coral recruitment in the Mascarene Islands (Reunion and Rodrigues) is low and highly variable at all spatial scales, from a few centimeters to several hundreds of kilometers. This spatial variability is also observed between sites in terms of benthic cover, density, size structure, mortality and recovery potential of coral communities. However, this spatial variability is not clearly linked to the protection levels of the sites, nor to the theoretical patterns of ecological succession (studied in Reunion Island). A succession pattern is yet highlighted through the increase in coral size and species richness over time until interspecific interactions (e.g. competition for space) lead to their decline. In addition, a strong dominance of the Pocillopora genus is recorded at all lava flow sites, confirming its pioneering and competitive nature. The recovery index (RI) that we developed suggests that the recovery potential of the reefs of the Mozambique Channel is higher (especially for Europa) than that of the reefs of the Mascarene Islands, which are more subject to direct anthropogenic pressures. These results are consistent with past observations of recovery trajectories of the studied reefs following various disturbances. The addition of recruitment rates to the calculation of RI for Reunion and Rodrigues islands clearly modifies the recovery potential of these islands sites: the sites with the highest recruitment rates are also those with the highest RI. This project thus provides essential information on Indian Ocean reef communities that may improve management strategies for coral reef conservation

Full textBacterial antibiotic drug resistance is a worldwide health issue affecting human, animal, and agriculture. Extended-spectrum bêta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E), mutidrug-resistant bacteria, are a main health priority for the South-western Indian Ocean (SWIO) composed of islands (i.e. Madagascar, Maurice, Mayotte, Les Seychelles, l’Union des Comores et La Réunion). The main objective of this PhD thesis was estimating the ESBL-E prevalence in the three « One Heath approach » compartments (human, animal, environment) in order to identify the main ESBL-E reservoir in IO. This prevalence was independently estimated for each compartment by a sectorial approach and by a holistic approach connecting all compartments spatially and temporally.Both approaches suggest that livestock could be the main ESBL-E reservoir in IO and point out permeability between these three compartments in Madagascar. If the idea of a main reservoir of ESBL-E in livestock seems plausible, its contribution to human colonisation could differ between SWIO territories. Indeed, human direct and/or undirect exposure to this reservoir could be reduced in high-income countries (i.e. Seychelles, La Réunion) but significant for low-income countries (i.e. Madagascar, Union des Comores). In the absence, or reduced application, of food safety, sanitation, and drinking water access, the exposure to ESBL-E from livestock could be substantial in SWIO low-income countries. Consequently, the relative contribution of livestock in human ESBL-E subsequent colonisation could be significant in low-income countries but currently understudied. Research on that topic should strengthen antibiotic drug resistance control measures in low sanitation contexts

Full textTropical cyclone track forecast has improved over the past two decades but little improvement have been done in intensity changes forecast. This thesis focuses on the intensity changes of tropical cyclones in the southwest Indian ocean through the original aspect of lightning activity. A climatology of lightning activity in the southwest Indian ocean using data from the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) is first proposed. Results showed that the WWLLN was able to locate and capture the lightning activity in the basin and that tropical cyclones can be considered as a major source of lightning flashes in some oceanic parts of this region. From this result, study of lightning activity in tropical cyclones of the southwest Indian ocean has been done considering the basin configuration. Thus, three regions were defined: open ocean, region near the eastern coast of Madagascar and the Mozambique Channel. The location and intensity of lightning activity depend on the region and the intensity stage. Lightning flashes seem to be a proxy of intensification or weakening under some conditions. The third step of this thesis was to simulate in an idealized framework a mature tropical cyclone. The model was first able to reproduce the sporadic behavior of lightning activity as observed. Budgets have shown that the presence of three distinctive phases characterized by different dynamical, microphysical and electrical behaviors. Finally, another purely numerical work tried to identify some proxies of lightning activity according two approaches : a global analysis anda per-cell analysis. In both cases, the best proxies are the total graupel mass, the updraft volume and the product of precipitating and non-precipitating ice mass fluxes

Full textCoral reefs are increasingly threatened by global changes as they affect both accretion and erosion processes. Among these processes, reef bioerosion is a major natural process of degradation resulting from the action of various organisms on and in carbonate substrates. Recently, a particular attention has been given to the roles played by bioeroding (or perforating) microflora, which include cyanobacteria, microalgae, and fungi, in the functioning of coral reefs, especially in the carbonate budget, because of their important role in the dissolution of dead carbonates over short term (day, month, year). The thesis's main objective was thus to study the effects of global change factors such as ocean warming and acidification, on the composition, distribution, and abundance of reef microbioeroding communities over long term. Since long-term experiments with dead corals are difficult to carry out, several coral cores from two slow-growing massive coral genera (Diploastrea sp. and Porites sp.) were collected along the Mozambique Channel, particularly in Mayotte. Those cores covered the last decades (30 to 50 years). Such massive corals are known to be natural geological archives largely colonized by microbioeroding communities which leave traces while dissolving CaCO3. To study the dynamics of microbioeroding communities in the two targeted coral genera, two innovative methods were developed: a machine learning approach to quickly and accurately analyze thousands of Scanning Electron Microscope pictures of microbioeroding traces along three vertical transects parallel to the main coral growth axis, and a lipid biomarkers approach along a coral core of Diploastrea sp.. The machine learning method based on a CNN model was first developed on the coral Diploastrea sp. with an accuracy of 93%. It was then adapted to Porites sp. by modifying a hyperparameter (95% accuracy). The geochemical approach tried identifying specific lipid markers of the boring microalga Ostreobium sp. and the coral Diploastrea sp. during the last decades. The results showed that the abundance of microbioeroding traces is 3 to 4 times higher in the coral Diploastrea sp. than in Porites sp and has decreased in both coral genera over the last decades. In Diploastrea sp., the decrease was 90% over the last 54 years and was coupled with a very important change in community composition between 1985-1986. The density (bulk) of Diploastrea sp. has also dropped significantly over the last 5 decades. Logistic regressions showed that temperature, wind speed, and internal pH of the coral, more or less coupled, are correlated to the abundance of microbioeroding traces. The geochemical approach also highlighted a significant decrease of a lipid biomarker group, the amides, over the last decades. Although it is difficult to attribute amides to a specific taxon or species in the coral skeleton, I hypothesize that they could potentially reflect the presence of microbioeroding communities. To confirm or refute the observed trends, there is a need to study more coral cores, from different areas, and over a longer period. In addition, other factors should be studied to understand better the decrease in the abundance of microbioeroding communities and its implication in coral health and resilience, such as trace metals and other variables of the carbonate system

Full textThe work described in this manuscript concerns four sponges from the South-West Indian Ocean: Plakortis kenyensis, Theonella swinhoei, Haliclona fascigera and Fascaplysinopsis reticulata. The chemical study of the sponges including extraction, isolation and identification of secondary metabolites was undertaken using various chromatographic (MPLC, HPLC ...) and spectroscopic (UV-visible, HRMS, 1D and 2D NMR ...) techniques. Twelve secondary metabolites including six new molecules were isolated from these sponges. The new molecules are: 2,5-époxydocosan-6-en-21-ynoic acid (HF1) an unusual fatty acid isolated from the sponge Haliclona fascigera; 8-oxo-tryptamine (FR2), 6,6'-bis (debromo)-gelliusine F (FR3), 6-bromo-2'-demethyl-3'-N- methyl-1',8-dihydroaplysinopsine (FR6), 5,6-dibromo-2'-demethyl-3'-N-methyl-1',8-dihydroaplysinopsine (FR7) and 5,6-dibromo-3’-deimino-2’-demethyl-3’-oxo-1’,8-dihydroaplysinopsine (FR8), five indole alkaloids isolated from the sponge Fascaplysinopsis reticulata. The biological activities of the isolated molecules were then evaluated. Among the twelve isolated molecules, seven were active against the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, three were identified as inhibitors of the quorum sensing-regulated bioluminescence in Vibrio harveyi and five, showing marine bacterial adhesion and/or growth inhibition, exhibited potential anti- microfouling activity

Full textThis work focuses on the connectivity among populations of the coral genus Pocillopora in the Southwestern Indian Ocean and the Southwestern Pacific Ocean. These corals are widely distributed throughout the tropical fringe of the Indian and Pacific oceans. Traditionally, species were identified on the basis of morphological criteria [17 species described in Veron (2000)]. Different studies using genetic data revealed that the delimitation of species was sometimes blurred in these corals. Thus, in this work, the use of species delineation methods from mitochondrial (ABGD, GMYC, PTP) and nuclear (haplowebs) DNA, 16 primary species hypotheses (PSH) were identified. These PSHs were then confronted to assignment tests from microsatellite loci, revealing a minimum of 18 secondary species hypotheses (SSH). Once the species hypotheses are defined, it is possible to conduct connectivity studies. In this work, two SSHs with different ecologies were chosen to carry out these analyses. The first, Pocillopora damicornis type β (SSH05) was sampled in the lagoons and the second, Pocillopora eydouxi (SSH09) was sampled on the outer slope. The estimation of the genetic structure of the populations made possible to estimate the reproductive modes (sexual or asexual) in these two SSHs and the connectivity analyzes revealed complex structuring patterns for each of the SSHs

Full textThis work documents the temporal and spatial variability of surface solar radiation (SSR) over the southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) and Reunion Island using two complementary Regional Climate Models (RCMs): RegCM4 and WRF. The first part of the work is dedicated to the analysis of the temporal variability of SSR based on RegCM4 over the SWIO at a moderate spatial resolution (50km). Because RegCM4 is the first RCM that focuses on the solar radiation research over the SWIO region, a first series of test experiments with this model to illustrate the model performance and its sensitivity to the choice of the physical parameterizations (radiation, convection), the domain size, and the spatial resolution, are performed. The default CCM radiative and the mixed convective scheme: Grell scheme over land and Emanuel scheme over ocean, give better performance over the SWIO compared to the other available options. The interannual, intraseasonal and synoptic climate variability is then examined through the climate indices and several ERA-Interim parameters (U, V, T and RH) are firstly analyzed along with the corresponding RegCM4 output data to check whether the RegCM4 model forced by ERA-Interim reanalyses is able to maintain the El-Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and the Tropical Temperate Trough (TTT) signals. Secondly, simulated SSR in association with the different modes of variability is examined. In the second part, SSR spatial variability over Reunion Island is analyzed based on WRF simulations at very fine resolution (750m) for seasonal, intraseasonal, and daily time scales. Clustering classification is applied to WRF simulated SSR over Reunion and the effect from the atmospheric circulation is checked together. Météo France observations and CM SAF are used to validate the results of the model. The results indicate that regional climate models have the ability to present the temporal and spatial variability of SSR over Reunion

Full textDuring the past two decades, the emergence and spread of infectious diseases have caused substantial declines in the biodiversity and abundance of reef-building corals. Despite their increased global prevalence and virulence, little is known about coral diseases on Indian Ocean coral reefs. This study aims to fill this gap in knowledge by identifying the main coral diseases and quantify their prevalence at three localities Reunion, South Africa and Mayotte, determining their spatial distribution and seasonal variation. Principal findings of this study demonstrated the presence of six main coral diseases including black band disease (BBD), white syndromes (WS), pink line syndrome (PLS), growth anomalies (GA), skeleton eroding band (SEB) and Porites white patch syndrome (PWPS). The overall disease prevalence was higher in Reunion (7.5 ± 2.2%; mean ± SE) compared to South Africa (3.9 ± 0.8%; mean ± SE) and Mayotte (2.7 ± 0.3%; mean ± SE). Acropora and Porites were the genera most vulnerable to disease. Spatial variability was detected in both Reunion and South Africa with BBD and WS more prevalent on shallow than deep reefs. There was also evidence of seasonality in two diseases: BBD and WS, their prevalence being higher in summer than winter. Corals exhibiting signs of PWPS revealed extensive tissue fragmentation, generally associated with ovoid basophilic bodies resembling bacterial aggregates within the mesoglea of the body wall. Other organisms, including Cyanobacteria, Nematoda, Ciliata and endophytic algae, were also observed on diseased tissues and were generally associated with the dead epidermis and cell debris. Results of 16S rRNA sequence analysis revealed a high variability between bacterial communities associated with PWPS-infected and healthy tissues in Porites lutea. Several bacterial ribotypes affiliated to potential putative pathogens notably Shimia marina and Vibrio hepatarius were consistently found among the 16S rRNA sequences derived from the PWPS lesions, and absent and/or poorly represented in HT. Primary pathogens involved in the PWPS were also investigated in this study using traditional culturing techniques and laboratory infection trials. Of the 14 isolates selected for the inoculation trials, only the bacterial strain P180R mostly phylogenetically closely related8 to Vibrio tubiashii with its closest known sister taxon, V. hepatarius, was shown to cause signs resembling those of PWPS and satisfied the four Henle-Koch’s postulates. P180R displayed focalised and progressive tissue paling 12 h after inoculation and visible lesions of PWPS were observed 12 h thereafter. Signs of PWPS appeared on 90% of the exposed coral fragments (27 of 30) under controlled environmental conditions. Moreover, the virulence of this marine pathogen was tested and seemed to be strongly dependent on seawater temperature, resulting in significantly higher tissue loss at 30°C than 28°C and 26°C. Finally, a multidisciplinary approach involving field surveys, gross lesion monitoring, histopathology and 454-pyrosequencing was investigated to characterize an atypical form of BBD named PBPS. Histology revealed cyanobacterial penetration of the compromised tissue as well as the presence of basophilic bodies resembling bacterial aggregates in the living tissue, adjacent to the bacterial mat. Bacterial 16S rRNA sequences yielded a broader diversity of bacterial taxa in PBPS-infected tissues than in healthy tissue, represented by the genus Vibrio (24.9%), followed by sulfate-reducers or sulfide-oxidizers such as Desulfovibrio (20%), Clostridium (12.9%) and Arcobacter (9.9%). PBPS appears to be a multi-stage disease triggered by cyanobacterial invasion and resulting in secondary infections by environmental bacteria that grow in mucus-like decomposing tissue

Full textOf key importance for the comprehension of humpback whales’ (Megaptera novaeangliae) distribution patterns and habitat use is to quantify how ecological and environmental factors affect the distribution of animals, which requires knowledge on dispersal movements of individuals. Using an opportunistic sightings dataset collected in the Sainte Marie Channel (Northeast of Madagascar) and satellite telemetry data acquired for this study (25 tagged whales), the aim of this thesis was to study the movements and the habitat use of humpback whales in Madagascar during the breeding season, according to sex and reproductive status. Physiographic and oceanographic variables (measured by satellite) were extracted under each position. A general distribution pattern of habitat use during the breeding season was also proposed based on additional humpback whales tracks from others breeding grounds of the Southern Hemisphere: Brazil (n=82 individuals), the Western Australian coast (n=26), and the Eastern Australian coast (n=11). In the Sainte-Marie Channel, groups without calves dominated the first 30 days of the breeding season, followed by an increase in groups with calves (Chapter III). Water depth influenced the distribution of social groups with mother-calf pairs more frequently found in relatively shallow water (0-20 m). Along the coast of Madagascar, over the shelf, females showed localized behavior in deep water and at large distances from shore suggesting that their breeding habitat extends beyond the shallow coastal waters (Chapter IV). Males’ active swimming speed decreased in shallow waters, but we found no influence of environmental parameters on males’ movements. In oceanic habitats, both males and females showed localized behaviors in shallow waters and high surface chlorophyll-a concentrations. The active swimming speed accounts for a large proportion of the whale observed speed while observed direction of tagged whales tending to be closer to the current direction when the current intensity was high. Our comparative study between breeding areas showed that the spatial distribution varies according to the period of the season, between the studied sites, sex and breeding status (Chapter V). Early and late in the season, males moved more directly and in more offshore areas than females, especially females with calves. At the peak of the season, both males and females performed more localized movements than at the other periods. Accounting for differences in the spatio-temporal variability of the distribution of males and females in the breeding grounds seems a necessity to better understand the humpback whales ecology and contribute to the species conservation

Full textDespite significant improvements in Tropical Cyclone (TC) track forecasts over the past few decades, anticipating the sudden intensity changes of TCs remains a major operational issue. The main purpose of this thesis is to analyze TC rapid intensification processes in relation with external forcing induced by upper-level troughs originating from the mid-latitudes. The impact of initial storm structure on storm evolution and prediction is also documented. An objective definition for rapid intensification in the southwest Indian Ocean is first proposed. The location and frequency of TC-trough interactions are identified, as well as TC-trough arrangements conducive to TC intensification. An interesting study case, TC Dora (2007), is chosen to run numerical simulations initialized with synthetic TC observations blended in a global analysis. The simulated TC-trough interaction is intricate with potential vorticity (PV) advection from the trough into the TC core at mid and upper levels. Vortex intensification first occurs inside the eyewall and results from PV superposition. Further intensification is associated with a subsequent secondary eyewall formation triggered by external forcing from the trough. The numerical model is able to reproduce the main features associated with outer eyewall spin-up, inner eyewall spin-down, and their effects on vortex intensity changes. Another numerical study examines typhoons in the northwest Pacific and demonstrates the critical role played by initial vortex structure in TC track and intensity prediction. Upgrading the initial specification of a TC inner-core structure in numerical models is recommended for future TC prediction improvements

Full textThe aim of this thesis was to study the feeding habits of coastal fish species of commercial interest andto use stable isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) to investigate the trophic niches of fish and their use of coastal habitats in the south-west Indian Ocean. In the Bay of La Possession, the species among the most abundant around the artificial reefs immersed in 2003 (Luljanus kasmira, Priacanthus hamrur and Selar crumenophthalmus) feed essentially on pelagic prey and partition their trophic niche to limit interspecific competition. There was also a positive correlation between fish size and muscle δ15N values due to fish larvae contributing more to the diet of fish with age. The stable isotopie composition of the particulate organic matter (POM) was measured at the microscale (< 10 km) in the Bay of La Possession, the mesoscale (10's of km) around Reunion Island and, for the fish muscles, at the macroscale 100’s of km) along the Mascarene plateau and the Mozambique channel. At microscale, POM δ15N values do not show any spatial variability; at mesoscale, POM is 15N-enriched in the south-west of Reunion Island; at macroscale, fish muscles are gradually 15N-enriched towards the north. At microscale, POM shows a 13C-enrichment on the shallowest station; at mesoscale, stations on the east coast of the island are 13C-enriched compared to the west; at macroscale, POMδ13C values are not significantly correlated with latitude. Thus, the stable isotopes of carbon do not seem to be appropriate for the study of fish coastal habitat use at the meso- and macroscale, and the stable isotopes of nitrogen represent a better indicator of fish habitat use at the macroscale

Full textIt is well known that the vast majority of food colorants used in food and beverage applications comes from the pigments synthesized by plant materials. Besides, stability of many plant-derived colors can create formulation problems. Factors such as the region, the climate, the environment, the cultivar all impact colors shade, strength and overall stability in the final product. As an alternate, fungi of the genus Monascus, Penicillium and Talaromyces are known as excellent producers of red pigments. These red pigments are of industrial interest as they are stable and non-toxic and can be used as food colorants.This present research deals with the selection of high throughput red pigment producing Talaromyces albobiverticillius as a source of polyketide based natural food colorants. Design of Experiments (DoE) and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) have been used to optimize culture conditions and media formulation of fermentation process. Using Box Behnken Design (BBD), the influence of different physical factors on pigment and biomass production was studied using potato dextrose broth as culture media. The best optimal conditions were found to be with initial pH of 6.4, temperature of 24 °C, agitation speed of 164 rpm and fermentation time of 149 h gave 47.93 ± 0.58 mg /L of orange pigment, 196.28 ± 0.76 mg / L of red pigment and 12.58 ± 0.41 g /L of dry biomass. With the application of Plackett- Burman Design (PBD), 16 different media formulations were optimized using various carbon and nitrogen sources. When Sucrose and Yeast extract was used as a basal medium at 24° C, high pigment yield was observed: 695.93 ± 0.29 mg /L of orange pigment, 738.28 ± 0.51 mg / L of red pigment and 6.80 ± 0.37 g /L of dry biomass.Twelve different compounds were detected from the HPLC-PDA-ESI/MS analysis of intracellular and extracellular pigmented extracts. In particular, N-threonine-monascorubramine, N-glutaryl-rubropunctamine and PP-O were tentatively identified among these twelve compounds; further, this work reports for the first time on the PDA, MS and NMR characterization of the here named as N-GABA-monascorubramine derivative (6-[(Z)-2-Carboxyvinyl]-N-GABA-monascorubramine) pigment bearing a cis configuration at the C10-C11 double bond, in Talaromyces albobiverticillius 30548. Attempts were made to study the effects of sea salts on pigment synthesis; sustainable green extraction methods for pigments; upscaling of fermentation from shake flasks to laboratory fermenter. All these experiments with their results were discussed briefly as individual chapters. Overall, these findings bring out the potential of marine-derived red pigment producing fungi and its possibility of obtaining tailor made food colorants

Full textThis thesis is a comprehensive work aiming to improve scientific knowledge on the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) in order to provide key scientific evidences needed for the implementation of coherent and effective management measures to protect at the Western Indian Ocean scale this threatened species. In a first step, this work aimed to established baseline data on the abundance of green turtles nesting females and long term trends of some key nesting populations of the region by applying different modelling methods. In a second step, this work determined the regional genetic structure of this species and the relationships that exists between the different populations. Finally, the conservation of marine turtles being closely dependant to external pressures, this work tried to characterize theanthropogenic pressures they face, more specifically those related to fishing activities. All these results allowed unraveling some key gaps on the biology and ecology of the green turtle in the region and led to a global vision of the conservation status of this species in the Western Indian Ocean. The compilation of the results enabled the identification of regional priority areas for protection, but also some more specific threatened sites such as Europa. Finally, this synthesis shedslight on research priorities and scientific approaches to be promote in the future to unlock other keyscientific issues and refine conservation priorities, not only of marine turtles, but also of marine megafauna as a whole

Upholding the leadership of France in the area requires a solid and amicable relationship with the countries bordering the Indian Ocean. France’s goal is to remain the first main partner of all the French speaking countries in the area. Often described as “the gate to the Indian Ocean”, Madagascar is one of them. The Malagasy political instability jeopardizes the island’s relationship with France. With national imperatives in mind, Malagasy government officials try for a shift in foreign policy with each new presidency. In this regard, instability is one of the main features of French- Malagasy relationship. Putting at risk the perpetuation of the French influence in Madagascar, its consequences can spread all over the “French speaking Lake”. For France, keeping Madagascar under French influence is critical as it meets with France’s post-cold war foreign policy’s objectives such as: the perpetuation of French power (average) over several regions in an oligopolar world. Preventing the influence of other powers like China or South Africa in Madagascar is impossible. Therefore, for France, the challenge consists of strengthening existing relationships for the purpose of upholding post-cold-war status quo

Full textThe honeybee (Apis mellifera) is a key species in its native range for both ecosystem services offerred and for bee products. However, its populations are subject to various biotic stressors responsible for significant mortalities. In the South-West Indian Ocean region the endemic bee subspecies is A. m.unicolor. However, no studies had been carried out on its pathosphere and it is only since 2010 where the ectoparasite Varroa destructor invaded some of these islands, threatening this subspecies, that first studies were conducted. In this thesis work, we carried out a general inventory of the health of honeybee herds through descriptive epidemiological surveys in the majority of islands: Réunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues, Madagascar and Seychelles. We were able to show quite similar epidemiological facies between islands, characterized by a dominance of Nosema ceranae especially in small islands (80-100%) and the presence of 3 viruses: BQCV (4-89%), CBPV (2- 51% except in Rodrigues) and DWV (4-40% except in Reunion). Other pathogens have only been found in certain territories such as Aethinatumida, Braula pretoriensis, Acarapis sp. or Melissococcus plutonius. The analysis of the genetic diversity carried out on the 3 viruses showed a proximity of viral strains within the SOOI. Surveys conducted in a context without varroa showed good colony health with no clinical signs. The observed mortalities concerned only the territories invaded by varroa: Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion. Varroa therefore appears to be the main cause of acute colony mortality in the area long before other pathogens or environmental causes. Its impact on bee populations and ultimately on native ecosystems will be evaluated in future years

Full textThis study focuses on thé acquisition of knowledge of various aspects of thé trophic ecology of marine top predators from thé South-Western Indian Océan through thé analysis of trace élément levels and isotopic signatures. Three toxic éléments (cadmium, mercury and lead) and five essential éléments (copper, iron, manganèse, sélénium and zinc) were analyzed in six seabirds (Barau's Pétrel, Audubon's Shearwa'ter, White-tailed Tropicbird, Brown Noddy, Lesser Noddy and Sooty Tern) and five pelagic fishes (Swordfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Skipjack Tuna, Wahoo, Common Dolphinfish). A large range of trace élément levels were observed. Copper levels were high in thé liver of Yellowfin Tunas collected around Reunion Island, rénal iron and zinc levels were high, respectively, in Dolphinfish and Yellowfins sampled in thé Mozambique Channel, and mercury levels were highest in Barau's Pétrels liver and kidney. The large variations of trace élément levels were attributable to a combination of several factors influencing their bioaccumulation: thé organ or tissue considered, thé animais nutritional condition (for essential éléments), thé âge (determined through thé length for fish), thé geographical area, detoxification processes, thé species and thé diet

Full textThe Southwest Indian Ridge in its eastern part has particularly low magmatic inputs and is therefore a natural laboratory to study oceanic accretion in an extreme configuration for which the divergence of the plates is almost completely accommodated by large offset normal faults, also called detachment faults. These faults exhume mantle-derived peridotites. Very little is known about the deformation mechanisms that operate at the lower levels of the lithosphere, prior to serpentinization.We studied the deformation textures, analyze strain localization mechanisms, as well as mineralogical assemblages associated with these mechanisms from a corpus of almost 400 samples of serpentinized peridotites dredged during the SMoothSeafloor cruise (2010). All samples display heterogeneous deformation combining brittle (fracturation, kinks) and plastic mechanisms (undulose extinction, subgrain boundaries, dynamic recrystallization). For example, microfracturation and kinks are locally accompanied by partial recrystallization of the primary minerals into fine-grained aggregates along orthopyroxene grains. These textures result from high stress and high temperature conditions at the base of the lithosphere, where the root of the active detachment.We use these microstructural observations to constrain a 2D thermomechanical model of lithospheric extension, in which we explore two weakening mechanisms seen in the samples: serpentinization (temperatures < 350°C) and grain size reduction (> 800°C). Combining the two, we develop detachment faults in a thick lithospheric context (20-25 km), with fault topography and offsets that are consistent with geological observations in the eastern SWIR

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to study the tropical cyclones of the south western part of the Indian ocean, while considering the risks and damages they present to the reunion island, according their intensity on their following direction way. The first part describes the cyclone activity insisting on the frequency, the proportion of hurricanes compared tio the amount of atmospheric disturbances, in connection of the violence of the latters. For a better correspondence between the atmospheric pressure at heart of the tropical systems and the winds speed is also researched. The second part deals with the factors managinig the cyclones intensity. Some altitude situations which are favourable to their intensification are proposed in the same time of a relationship between the ocean temperature and the central pressure. Finally, the hurricane's maximum intensity who is able to affect the Mascareignes is estimated. The third part puts in evidence the major cyclonic risks for each geographic sector in Reunion Island, in function of various factors, like geographical dispositions, tropical perturbations intensity, their frequency and their destination. The looses of island economy, those getting in different activity sectors are valuated for the first time. Finally, the tropical cyclone, which would be the most devastating for Reunion Island is defined

Full textMagmatic processes that govern crustal accretion at mid-ocean ridges still need to be better constrained. Among the processes potentially involved in the evolution of the lower crust magma reservoirs, reactions associated with reactive porous flow through crystal mushes tend to be considered as one of the predominant processes together with simple crystallization of magmas. The share of these processes during magma differentiation is dependent on the modes of melt migration and is thus correlated to the geometry of the reservoirs considered. By combining high-resolution structural, petrographic and geochemical studies of in situ sections drilled in an oceanic core complex of the Southwest Indian Ridge, I was able to bring new constraints on the formation and evolution of magmatic reservoirs involved in crustal accretion. All or part of the igneous reservoir model developed herein can be applied to other sections of lower oceanic crust. This model, together with additional constraints obtained by the coupled experimental petrology study of crystallization processes, paves the way for new quantifications of the involvement of melt-rock reactions in the differentiation of gabbroic lithologies, and more generally in the evolution of melts within the oceanic crust. Those developments are consistent with the constant evolution in recent decades of the understanding of crustal magmatic systems, which shifted from melt-filled magma chambers to igneous reservoir models mostly composed of crystal mushes

Full textThe Tropical Tropopause Layer (TTL), between 14 and 20 km in altitude, plays a key role in the general circulation as a gate to stratosphere for tropospheric air masses (Holton et al., 1995). The condensation of water vapor at the altitude of tropical tropopause temperature minimum causes the stratosphere to have very low water vapour content. Climate models predict an increase in water vapour mixing ratio in the TTL region which could contribute to an additional 10% to the surface warming (Dessler et al., 2013, 2016). The models have great difficulties in modeling water vapor variations in the TTL because of a poor representation of tropical convection, which controls much of the vertical transport of water vapor to the TTL. The impact of the deep convection on the water vapor and ozone content of TTL is addressed in this study. Radiosonde measurements (SHADOZ and Météomodem-M10 sondes) between 2013 and 2016 released from Reunion Island show that 20% of the summertime profiles (between 2013 and 2016) of Reunion Island have a distinct convective detrainment signature in the upper troposphere (10-13km). The lagrangian backtrajectories from FLEXPART model calculated for air masses impacted by convection show that northern Madagascar and the Mozambique Channel play a predominant role in the humidification of the upper troposphere over Reunion Island. With an yearly average of 9 tropical cyclones, the southwestern Indian Ocean is the third most active basin in the world but remains under-observed/studied. In this thesis, the role of tropical cyclones on the TTL moistening over the Indian Ocean is investigated. Mesoscale simulations at 2 km in resolution of cyclone Enawo (2017) carried out with the Meso-NH model showed that a tropical cyclone could humidify the lower stratosphere (17-19 km) by 45% (3.3- 4.8 ppmv) over a 500 km radius. The study focuses in particular on a massive intrusion of water vapor during the eye formation of the cyclone. The main process leading to the TTL humidification is the sublimation of ice transported into TTL by the cyclone. Mesoscale simulations of cyclone Gelena (2019) suggest that the estimation of vertical transport in the TTL car vary significantly between cyclones. According to Meso-NH preliminary résults, cyclone Gelena had humified the TTL by ~1 ppmv between 15 and 18 km in altitude

Full textMature tropical cyclones around the world form through similar atmospheric and oceanic processes. Whereas the necessary conditions for tropical cyclogenesis to occur are identical over all tropical basins, the specific environments within which pre-existing disturbances evolve into warm-core cyclonic circulations can be fairly different. This is partly due to the influence of large-scale climatic cycles (e. G. , ENSO, IOD, etc. ) and synoptic-scale propagating modes (e. G. , equatorial waves, MJO, etc. ). While many studies have examined the specific situations of the tropical basins in the northern hemisphere, storm formation is much less known in the southern hemisphere. This thesis presents an analysis of cyclogenetic evolution of named storms (tropical storms and cyclones) in the Southwestern Indian Ocean (10% of global cyclone activity) during 12 cyclonic seasons from December to March, from 1999-2000 to 2010-2011, based on ECMWF ERA-Interim reanalyses, METEOSAT satellite images and IBTrACS cyclone data, in connection with ENSO, MJO and equatorial waves (Equatorial Rossby, Mixed Rossby- Gravity and Kelvin waves). First, an objective method is used to detect tropical storms (also identified in the IBTrACS database) in the ERA-Interim reanalyses. The overall characteristics of cyclonic perturbations (warm/cold cores, baroclinicity and upper-level forcing) that evolve into tropical storms and cyclones in the SWIO are also discussed. Then, an objective determination of relevant predictors and their associated weight is presented, followed by the determination of their combination in a linear form to derive an environmental cyclogenesis tracker adapted to the SWIO cyclonic season. The various dynamical and thermodynamical environmental parameters that compose the tracker's formula are analyzed spectrally in space and time. The influence of the different wave modes on cyclogenesis is discussed through their impact on the environmental values that play a significant role in cyclogenesis. Finally, numerical simulations of tropical cyclone Alenga (Nov/Dec 2011) are carried out to study the small-scale processes involved in the storm's formation and development within an MJO active phase

Full textDesigning biodiversity conservation plans requires knowledge on the biogeographic distribution of taxa but also accurate estimates of species richness and diversification processes. However, measuring the phyletic richness can be biased by the use of inappropriate taxonomical characters, leading to erroneous species delimitation and diversity estimates. This work explores the phyletic richness at several taxonomic levels (generic, specific and intraspecific) of the hydrozoan family Aglaopheniidae (Agassisz, 1862), with a particular focus on the South-Western Indian Ocean. Firstly, using several newly constructed phylogenies based on mitochondrial and nuclear markers, this study reveals that the phyletic diversity of this family is at underestimated by at least 50%: all studied genera are polyphyletic or with doubtful monophyletic status. Then, using several species delimitation methods based on molecular markers, it sheds light on the richness of cryptic diversity of this family, enlightening the potential of using an integrative taxonomic approach on these morphologically simple organisms. Finally, the population genetics of an Aglaopheniidae brooding species shows a high populations structuring with pervasive pattern of isolation by distance at several geographic scales (several to thousands of kilometres), implying a potentially high cryptic diversity existing in this family. The results of this work provide new insights on Aglaopheniidae diversity, underlining the potential influence of reproductive mode on the phyletic diversity and diversification processes of brooding hydrozoan brooders. This thesis further highlights the relevance of using several complementary species delimitation procedures to study the diversity of morphologically simple organisms

Full textIntegrating ecological connectivity into marine ecosystem management and planning is important, especially in a global context of severe fish stocks depletion and growing habitat degradation. Environmental tools such as Marine Protected Areas have been proposed to protect biodiversity, restore damaged ecosystems, sustain fisheries, and rebuild overexploited stocks. The effectiveness of marine protected areas depends in part on the maintenance of connectivity between marine populations, linked by ecological processes such as larval dispersal. In this thesis, we applied a biophysical model driven by ocean currents derived from satellite altimetry to evaluate connectivity between Western Indian Ocean reefs and across the current MPA system in the Mediterranean Sea. We applied different methods of analysis such as graph-theoretic and clustering. In the Western Indian Ocean, marine connectivity analyses show that the number of connections between reefs increases with fish pelagic larval duration. It also highlights a low connectivity across the region and a high interconnectivity within several regions (Mozambique Channel, Mascarene archipelago). In the Mediterranean Sea, connectance is globally low at the regional scale. This connectance is more important in Western than Eastern Mediterranean. Moreover, the marine connectivity analyses revealed high domestic connectivity rates. Depending on the study area, priority reefs or sites for MPA implementation are proposed. Finally, implications for transboundary marine policies and regional cooperation are discussed

Full textThe easternmost part of the Southwest Indian Ridge (61°-67°E) is an end-member of the global ridge system in terms of very low magma supply. As such, it is a good laboratory to investigate the effect of melt-mantle interactions on the composition of erupted basalts: for a given volume of erupted basaltic melt, the volume of reacted mantle is potentially greater than at more magmatically robust ridges. We analyzed major, trace element and isotopic compositions in three groups of rocks : plagioclase-bearing ultramafic and gabbroic rocks dredged in nearly amagmatic spreading corridors; basalts from the sparse volcanic cover of these corridors ("ultramafic seafloor basalts"); and basalts dredged from the intervening, more volcanically active domains ("volcanic seafloor basalts"). Ultramafic seafloor basalts have significantly lower CaO and A1203 contents at a given MgO than most volcanic seafloor basalts. We observe no systematic isotopic or trace element variations between ultramafic and volcanic seafloor basalts, on- and off-axis. This suggests that these two types of basalts are derived from the same mantle source, which appears to be isotopically homogeneous for the past 8. 8 Myrs. We propose that both types of basalts are derived from similar parental melts, but that the ultramafic seafloor basalts are more affected by reactions between these parent melts and the mantle rocks in the lithosphere below the ridge. We infer that these reactions occur in the walls of conduits that allow the aggregated melts extracted from the melting mantle to rise through the axial lithosphere and to the eruption sites. The principal effect of these reactions is to enrich the asthenospheric melts in MgO through olivine dissolution. This effect is not expected to be as noticeable, but could still play a role in basait petrogenesis at more magmatic regions of the global slow-spreading MOR system. Alter moderate fractional crystallization that forms gabbros, reacted liquids can rise to the eruption sites, or be trapped in the lithosphere where they fractionate oxide gabbros. Oxide gabbros occur as intrusions or dikes in the peridotites. The minerai compositions of these oxide gabbros cannot be reproduce by a simple fractional crystallization model, suggesting reaction processes between the evolved melt and previously fractionated gabbroic rocks, and between the evolved melt and mantle host rocks

Full textTropical seabirds show a hierarchical distribution depending on the position of their colonies and their dispersion capability. At macro-scale it reflects the boundaries of their habitats, at meso-scale the presence of structures aggregating prey, and at micro-scale the presence at the surface of prey driven by predatory schools. In the South-West Indian Ocean, more than 6 millions of birds are present, of which 99% are sooty terns. They breed seasonally in austral winter in the Seychelles and at Europa, in austral summer at Juan de Nova. The high chlorophyll concentration around colonies favours the development of food web leading to the terns. The location of Glorieuses favours a sub-annual breeding regime, led by the presence of prey around the colony all year round. Biomass removed by terns in the Mozambique Channel is estimated to 55,000 tons, by breeding season

Full textTo reconstitute the Southern Ocean paleoclimatic evolution during the last 50. 000 years, the isotopic ratio 180/160 has been analysed on benthic and planktonic foraminifera carbonate and diatoms silica skeletons extracted from 4 West-Indian and South-Atlantic cores. With the object to remove the average oceanic [formule] variations (which are liked to continental ice volume fluctuations), the benthic foraminifera [formule] record has been subtracted from the planktonic species. In result, D180 records represent the upper layer temperature and salinity changes. R180 record, obtained by elimination of the temperature influence, is representative of [formule] superficial oceanic water changes. Then, these isotopic records have been correlated with epontic and ice-edge diatoms abundances variations end upper oceanic layer paleotemperature changes (Pichon, 1985). Correlations between the three kinds of date (isotopic, paleoecological, paleothermical) show that an important ice-melt event had occurred during the last glacial maximum, near the Antarctic Polar Front zone. This event seems to correspond with a "down-draw" response of the Antarctic ice-sheet. Moreover, the superficial Antarctic water masses seem to have been warmed 1. 500 to 2. 000 years before the general deglaciation of the northern hemisphere

Full textArbitration is an alternative to judicial proceedings. The arbitration agreement has two effects, first it grants jurisdiction to the arbitral tribunal and, second, it excludes the state judge. However, this eviction of national jurisdictions has limits. Some circumstances require the intervention of the state judge.In such cases, he has a delicate balance to achieve. He intervenes beside or within a procedure that shall in essence be held elsewhere. Through a comparative study of arbitration laws and practices in the Southern Indian Ocean, the thesis draws the wavering line between helpful assistance and obstructing interference.In the first part, the study focuses on arbitration practices in the region, and more particularly on how national laws address arbitration agreement. Then, the analysis deals with the negative effect of competence-competence and the obligation of national courts to refer the parties to arbitration.In the second part, the thesis focuses, firstly, on the judge’s assistance to solve difficulties throughout the constitution phase of the arbitral tribunal and, secondly, on its support for interim measures before or during the arbitral proceedings.In this part of the world, there are modern laws governing interactions between national courts and arbitration. In practice, difficulties arise due to a mistrust that would explain why arbitration does not develop in some of the studied countries

Full textIn the southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) islands (Comoros, Mauritius, Mayotte, Réunion, Rodrigues and Seychelles), bacterial wilt caused by the Ralstonia solanacearum species complex (Rssc) is considered one of the most harmful plant disease for food crops or export. The main objective of this work presented in this manuscript was to explore the level and the distribution of the genetic diversity of Rssc and the genetic structure of its populations in SWIO. We conducted extensive sampling campaigns that resulted in a large collection of 1704 isolates, mainly from Solanaceae (tomato, potato, chilli, eggplant, pepper) and geranium rosat. The phylogenetic assignment of the isolates showed a very high prevalence of phylotype I (88 %), which is distributed in each island of the SWIO, while phylotypes II (9 %) and III (3 %) are found only in Réunion. Two phylotype IV strains have also been reported in Mauritius, representing the first report of this phylogenetic group in SWIO. A phylogenetic and genotyping approach (MLSA/MLST) based on sequence analysis of 6 housekeeping genes and 1 gene associated with virulence (egl) revealed the genetic relationships between 145 representative SWIO strains (geographic diversity + host) and 90 global reference strains. The development and application of MLVA scheme based on 17 variable number of tandem repeat sequences (VNTR) on nearly 1300 strains revealed that phylotype I populations are organized into clonal complexes in SWIO and that the level of genetic diversity is highly contrasted according to the islands, with Mauritius having the highest genetic diversity. This work highlights the deployment of a genetic lineage (Sequevar I-31, STI-13, MT-035), overrepresented in SWIO islands, which could have been introduced via contaminated plant material from South Africa or West Africa. Our preliminary studies show that the main haplotype MT-035 (i) is the probable founding haplotype of the most prevalent clonal complex in SWIO, (ii) has high pathogenicity (wide range of hosts including cultivated plants and weeds, and high aggressiveness on Solanaceae) and (iii) has a strong ability to compete in the environment via the production of bacteriocins. This work will ultimately strengthen epidemiosurveillance and guide control strategies of this plant pathogen, including the deployment of resistant cultivars

Full textLeptospirosis is a zoonosis of main medical concern on several islands of southwestern Indian Ocean (SWIO), some of which recording among the highest human incidence worldwide. Over the last decade, molecular epidemiology investigations carried out under a One Health framework have revealed a wide variety of Leptospira lineages and distinct transmission chains throughout the islands of the region. These islands are home to pathogenic Leptospira lineages and animal reservoirs that are either introduced or endemic to the SWIO region. Interestingly, the regional distribution of Leptospira diversity is associated with (i) a contrasted severity of human cases and (ii) distinct levels of specificity of Leptospira towards their mammalian hosts. Specifically, endemic Leptospira appear less pathogenic in humans and display higher specificity towards their animal reservoirs than their cosmopolitan counterparts. To complete the dataset of Leptospira diversity in the SWIO region, we produced data from bats of eastern Africa. Results support the previously observed pattern of host specificity of Leptospira towards their bats hosts and, overlaid upon the biogeographic history of Malagasy bats, suggest that these volant mammals have colonized Madagascar from continental Africa while hosting pathogenic Leptospira. To better understand the role of distinct Leptospira lineages in the contrasted epidemiology observed in the SWIO, we investigated the pathogenicity of three Leptospira isolates from this region using a hamster model. Leptospira mayottensis and Leptospira borgpetersenii isolates were obtained from Tenrec ecaudatus (tenrec) on Mayotte and Triaenops menamena (bat) in Madagascar, respectively, both mammals endemic to the SWIO region. A Leptospira interrogans strain, which genotype has been reported in the majority of human acute cases on La Réunion, was isolated from the introduced Rattus rattus (rat). In keeping with a distinct severity of the disease on Mayotte and La Réunion, endemic bat-borne and tenrec-borne Leptospira were significantly less pathogenic than the control cosmopolitan rat-borne isolate. The host specificity of the isolates obtained from endemic hosts was addressed using experimental infection of Rattus norvegicus, a known reservoir of pathogenic Leptospira. This animal model was challenged with all three isolates and mostly failed in supporting chronic infection with bat-borne and tenrec-borne Leptospira. Hence, the strong host-specificity of endemic Leptospira toward their hosts observed in the wild likely results from genetic determinants shaped by long-term co-evolutionary processes rather than from ecological constraints such as a lack of physical contact between introduced and endemic animal reservoirs. Finally, we undertook full genome sequencing of regional strains in order to highlight genomic features that may be associated with virulence and host specificity. Whole genome sequencing allowed the accurate classification of Leptospira isolates obtained on SWIO islands. Comparative genomics allowed to identify genes specific to a group or species of Leptospira but complex changes in Leptospira genome make difficult the identification of genomic elements responsible for specific traits such as virulence and host specificity

Full textFreshwaters of the Indo-west Pacific islands are the home of many amphihalin organisms, whose amphidromous life-cycle has evolved as an adaptation to these habitats. Among them, the decapod crustaceans of the Macrobrachium genus are represented by more than 200 species distributed in the whole inter-tropical area. Very sensitive to changes in freshwater quality and over-fishing, many of these species are endangered. Nothing is known about their morphological variability, the evolutive history of their radiation, the structuration of their populations and their dispersal modalities. Though, such steps are the starting point for setting up management and conservation measures of these fragile organisms. In a first chapter, the morphological and genetic variability of the Macrobrachium australe population from Reunion Island is explored. Within this species, it reveals a strong relationship between the shape and the environment, which may be the result of a phenotypic plasticity phenomenon. A second chapter studies the evolutive history of the Macrobrachium species in the Indian and Pacific oceans. Molecular phylogenetic analysis are used, based on the nuclear 18S fragment and the mitochondrial COI fragment. In a third chapter, the structuration of M. Australe et M. Lar within a set of Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean islands is considered. Possible larval migrations between the islands are explored. The larval marine cycle modalities are studied, along with the spatio-temporal aspects of postlarval return to freshwaters. A synthesis of the knowledge obtained is proposed, integrating possible applications to management and perspectives
