Abstract:
As a ubiquitous movement in the ocean, tides are vital for marine life and numerous marine activities such as fishing and ocean engineering. Tidal dynamics are complicated in the East Asian marginal seas (EAMS) due to changing complex topography and coastlines related to human activities (e.g., land reclamation and channel deepening) and natural variability (e.g., seasonal variations of ocean stratification and river flow). As an important tool, numerical models are widely used because they can provide basin-scale patterns of tidal dynamics compared to point-based tide gauges. This paper aims to overview the development history of the numerical simulation of tides in the EAMS, including the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, the East/Japan Sea, and the South China Sea, provide comprehensive understanding of tidal dynamics, and address contemporary research challenges. The basic features of major tidal constituents obtained by tidal models are reviewed, and the progress in the inversion of spatially and temporally changing model parameters via the adjoint method are presented. We review numerical research on how a changing ocean environment induces tidal evolution and how tides and tidal mixing influence ocean environment in turn. The generation, propagation, and dissipation of internal tides in the EAMS are also reviewed. Although remarkable progresses in tidal dynamics have been made, nonstationary tidal variations are not fully explained yet, and further efforts are needed. In addition, tidal influences on ocean environment still receive limited attention, which deserves special attention.

Abstract:
AbstractDeep-sea technology and equipment are required to explore the oceans and utilize ocean resources in the 21st century. Deep-ocean simulation systems (DOSs) play an essential role in the development of deep-sea equipment. This paper gives a detailed overview of deep-ocean high-pressure simulation systems (DOHPSs) worldwide. First, the history of DOS is introduced, and then the primary available equipment, particularly coming out of China, is described. Next, the new concept of the cold isostatic pressing (CIP) chamber and its technology and equipment are reviewed. Then, the basic mathematical theory for the design of pressure chambers is introduced to illustrate the limitations of the traditional monobloc chamber. To easily understand the pre-stressed wire-wound (PSWW) design, the pre-stress coefficient is introduced in theoretical analysis. Some valuable researches of PSWW are presented. Finally, the sealing design of DOS, especially tooth-locked quick-actuating closures (TLQAC), is discussed. The paper aims to inspire readers to develop innovative ideas about the future design of DOS.

Abstract:
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) operates a network of automated moored buoys in the oceans whose installation began in the early 1970s. What began as a research and development program consolidating independent U.S. buoy projects, by the mid-1980s evolved into an operational activity when the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) was moved into NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS). Except for a few reimbursable projects requiring ocean data, little effort was placed on sustained ocean monitoring, as NDBC focused upon satisfying NWS' mission requirements. NOAA's recent direction to become a “matrix” organization is leading to greater utilization of assets across its line offices. NDBC and its Marine Observing Network (MON) of moored buoys and fixed stations have become recognized as NOAA assets that can help meet NOAA-wide strategic goals. This paper describes some of NDBC's history and the future role it can play as part of a federal “backbone” system to support scientific needs of the community that works in the oceans.

Abstract:
AbstractThe National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) mission is to monitor, assess, and predict an ever-changing environment that extends from the bottom of the ocean to the surface of the sun. The National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) operates a fleet of environmental satellites that provide observations and measurements critical for this assessment of the Earth-sun system, including data for real-time monitoring of severe weather events and for developing numerical prediction models and forecasts. NESDIS also archives the data collected so users can access historical satellite data on atmosphere, land, and oceans dating back to the 1970s and in situ data going back centuries in order to improve our understanding of Earth's climate system. Because the World Ocean is one of the most important drivers of weather and climate on the planet, NOAA satellites provide global data for operational products that affect Earth's ocean ecosystems, including coral bleaching alert areas, detecting harmful algal blooms, and monitoring sea ice. With its high-volume data centers, NESDIS provides access to the world's most comprehensive sources of marine environmental data and information. This paper provides a brief history of NOAA satellites and an overview of the satellites currently in operation. Then, it focuses on satellite data and products that come together to monitor Earth's oceans and provide support for tropical storm monitoring, El Niño Southern Oscillation research, and ocean ecosystem monitoring. The paper concludes with a look toward NOAA's next generation of satellites that will be launching in the coming years and their effect on ocean monitoring.

Abstract:
History as a Magistra Vitae encompasses a lot of mutually complementing research and teaching subjects. It should be taught step by step from local and simple items up to global generalizations taking into account the age, educational level, and professional interests of audience. The pupils at the primary and secondary schools learn at first about their native towns or districts, later in more detail about their motherland as a whole, and common patterns of Europe with just basic names and data of the World. The higher schools are to combine minimal information of history necessary for any civilized human being with emphasized attention at the respective fields’ past separately for future lawyers, physicians, engineers, etc. In Ukraine as an extremely exhausted nation it is crucially important to break deeply rooted complex of inferiority, to prove indivisibility of domestic history with East-Central and the rest of Europe. We should overcome as soon as possible a situation when large territories had been devastated by Holodomor and colonized by alien settlers from other parts of the Soviet Union after this genocide. The newcomers’ offspring gradually will get accommodated to their new homeland yet during Transition they are an easy target for destructive impacts from abroad. To counteract subversive propaganda, we need highly educated teachers and lecturers. The pro-European liberals in Ukraine had been exterminated by notorious totalitarian purges or forced to exile and replaced by mercenaries of Russian revanchist forces. The huge traditional Universities hardly can be reformed and modernized, as they inherited stereotypes and prejudices from the past. Newly created, seemingly more flexible and certainly less corrupted higher schools attract capable and ambitious people yet their alumni feel temptation of more easy opportunities. Ukraine needs patriots now more than ever desperately fighting for survival against aggressor in current Hybrid war. The prospects look optimistic, yet for the time being it requires a lot of efforts. History teaching becomes still more important to promote unity of interdependent philological, historical, political, and state making generations of national rebirth aimed at the repatriation to modernity.

Abstract:
AbstractThe manned submersibles of the 1960s look very different to the vehicles being built today. Improvements in materials have allowed deeper diving depths, while the rapid advance in electronics and more compact engineering design have helped to reduce launch weights. The rescue submersible has been developed in the last 15 years, but most noticeable is the increased use of acrylic for working depths down to 1,000 m. This article tracks this evolution by looking at just 10 vehicles that formed important stepping stones along this path. Alvin, the Johnson-Sea-Link (JSL), and the Pisces represent the deep-diving science and working submersibles from the 1960s and early 1970s. Alvin has continued to evolve right up to the present day, and 2 of the 10 Pisces boats are still working. The LR5 saw the start of the current military rescue submersibles operating around the world today, although they were never built for that purpose at the start. Oil industry working subs in the 1970s heyday are represented by the ubiquitous Perry PC-12 and PC-18 boats. Now, the same function and more are fulfilled by the deep worker at a fraction of the size. The acrylic hull revolution started in the 1960s with the Naval Experimental Manned Observatory and the JSL boats but has taken until now to be fully realized. This path from the JSL boats is plotted with the Deep Rovers, Alicia AP6, and the current offerings from Triton and, finally, the Deep Fight, an expression of pure enjoyment of the subsea realm made possible by the designer's lifetime experience working with submersibles.

This paper describes the historical experience of wealth taxation in Europe and draws lessons from this history for wealth taxation in the twenty-first century. We show that the wealth tax base was narrow in European countries, due to large exemptions, tax avoidance, and evasion. The paper explains why such exemptions were granted and how they undermined the European wealth taxes. Drawing from this experience, we lay out the key design and enforcement features required for a successful wealth tax in the twenty-first century and compare this ideal wealth tax to proposals recently made in the United States.

Abstract:
Hurricanes, Nor'easters, winter storms and tsunamis cause damaging and destructive inundation of coastal areas. With the rapid growth and development of coastal regions, greater damage to property and loss of life will continue to occur. The development and implementation of numerical models allows these natural events to be replicated so that their potential effect can be known and lives and property protected. A wide variety of models have been developed over the past forty years to forecast coastal inundation. The models described herein were chosen based on their use in emergency management and hazard mitigation. Although a brief overview of the numerical characteristics of each model will be provided, the paper aims to highlight their function and application as forecasting, planning, warning and monitoring tools while detailing the chronological development of coastal inundation models.

Abstract:
The directional spreading of sea states is an important design parameter in offshore engineering. Wave directionality affects the resulting wave kinematics, which affects the forces exerted on offshore structures. In this paper, we develop a method for estimating the amount of spreading, when the only information available is the time history of free surface elevation at a single point in space. We do this by predicting the second-order bound waves that occur at the difference in frequency of two freely propagating waves. The magnitude of these second-order bound waves is a function of the angle between the interacting waves. Thus, it is possible to infer some information about spreading from a single-point time history. We demonstrate that this approach works for wave groups in a fully nonlinear numerical wave tank. We create a synthetic random sea state and introduce noise into the analysis and thus show that our approach is robust and insensitive to noise, even with a signal-to-noise ratio of unity in the difference waves. This approach is also applied to random waves in a physical wave tank where spreading was directly measured and also to a storm recorded in the North Sea. In all cases, we find our estimate of spreading is in good agreement with other measurements.

Abstract:
The Atlantic sea scallop is the most important molluscan shellfish species commercially harvested in the United States. The species is sought for the large, white circular adductor muscle (the 'meat') that holds the two valves of the animal together. In North America, the 'meat' is generally the only part of the scallop that is landed and eaten, although the meat only accounts for about a third of the animal's visceral weight. In 2004, U.S. landings of sea scallop meats totaled 29,374 metric tons. The value of the U.S. scallop harvest in 2004 ($321 million) was only exceeded by crabs ($447 million), shrimp ($425 million), and lobster ($344 million). Harvesting problems in the wild capture scallop fishery have a long history of being addressed with technical gear-related solutions. Recent advances include larger rings and twine tops, turtle chain mats, and changes to the drag frame. Management strategies and gear design must work together for sustainable fisheries.

Abstract:
The history of the main pipelines originates from the oil fields of Baku and Pennsylvania. Throughout its history, pipelines have undergone significantchanges from the first pipelines in US oil fields to field trunk pipelines. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the rapid development of internal combustion engines began, the latest models of weapons were equipped with engines that required light petroleum products for their work. Before the Second World War, the system of supply of petroleum productsfor the needs of the troops did not have time to form in full. Fuel was supplied tothe troops mainly by raid or road. During the war, the pipeline entered the supply system of troops, which is another mode of transport. The first pipeline that was laid for the needs of combatoperations was laid across the Oka River in the spring of 1942. The most famouswas the pipeline, which was laid on the bottom of Lake Ladoga in the fall of 1942.The length of the pipeline reached 23 kilometers, of which 21 kilometers was laidunder water at a depth of 13 meters. The pipeline was equipped with threadedconnections and was additionally welded to increase reliability. Installation of thepipeline took place under enemy fire during 43 days. During the blockade of Leningrad, gasoline, kerosene, and diesel fuel were supplied to the city. After the end of the Second World War, taking into account the experienceof hostilities to provide large groups of troops, sets of field main pipelines wereadopted. Sets of pipelines could be deployed at a distance of up to 150 kilometerswith a daily capacity of up to 3,000 tons per day.Special units - pipeline battalions- were created for the deployment of field trunk sets, their storage, maintenanceand operation. Modern use of field main pipelines is not limited to the supply of fuel tomilitary units, pipelines can often be used to extinguish large fires, as well as tosupply water to settlements in the event of a natural disaster or man-made accident. Keywords: History of oil pipelines development, applying of field main pipelines, applying of pipeline parts in modern conditions.

Abstract:
Oceanic plant life is dominated by the microscopic phytoplankton. Regardless of the scale at which they are observed, they display striking heterogeneity in their distribution. At their most dramatic they paint colourful swathes across whole seas. A short history of observations of phytoplankton ‘patchiness’ is presented, illustrated with some of the many ideas put forward to explain it. Focus is then turned to the mesoscale, covering scales of roughly 1–500 km. It is argued that the spatial variability seen in phytoplankton at these scales gives important information on the biogeochemistry of the ocean. In particular, interplay between the physical circulation and biological processes results in constantly shifting patterns that are strongly related to changes induced in phytoplankton production. It is thought that this physical influence may play a major role in controlling the rate at which new plant material (primary production) is generated in much of the world's oceans. Major questions yet to be addressed are also discussed including the difficulty of quantifying processes on the very limit of what we can model or observe and how these processes may change in response to and exert a feedback on future climate change.

The history of India’s struggle against colonial rule and her postcolonial tryst with democracy is presented in an epic vein. Tharoor’s strategy, bases on both the modern problematization of history and politics; and Indian traditions is both culturally appropriate and subversive in terms of internal affairs as well as imperial history and its modern legacies.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The 140-year history of the America's Cup, the oldest and most distinguished prize in world sport, is summarized from the author's vantage point of belonging to a family of boat designers and builders who contributed to the total dominance of American yachts from the beginning into the 1980s. Particulars and performance of the most important designs are illustrated. The sensational quarrel in the 1980s over how the design rules should be interpreted, culminating in the bizarre race of 1988, is described. The new International America's Cup Class is evaluated for the 1992 event in San Diego and future races.

According to the NOAA earthquake database, at least 31 events have been found in the Indian Ocean in terms of tsunami event since 1900, most of which occurred along the Sunda Trench. In this study, we review the history of tide level measurements and their datasets archives in Thailand, Indonesia, India, and Australia. We collected tide gauge paper charts recording historical tsunamis including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami in those countries. As a result, systematic collection of historical tsunami records by tide gauges in the Indian Ocean has been difficult, because few tsunamigenic earthquakes occurred in the Indian Ocean during the instrumentally observed period.

Abstract:
Retained placenta is the unborn placenta after 30 minutes of the childbirth. Factors that cause retained placenta include maternal age, parity, curettage history, history of cesarean section, history of endometritis, and placenta previa. According to WHO, retained placenta was the factor that contributed 15-20% of maternal mortality rate. In Indonesia, the incidence of retained placenta in 2015 was 40.3%. In East Java itself, the incidence was 53.7% in 2015. Furthermore, in the Hospital of Permata Bunda Malang City, the incidence was 30.7% in January 2018 alone. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between curettage history and the incidence of retained placenta of birth mothers in the Hospital of Permata Bunda, Malang City. This study used a Correlation design with Cross- sectional approach. The population in this study were 95 mothers with a sample of 76 respondents who delivered the baby normally. The sampling technique implemented was the Simple Random Sampling. The method of data analysis was Chi-square analysis. Based on the result, it was found that 35 responden (46.1%) had a history of curettage, 39 respondents (51.3%) had retained placenta, and 26 respondents (34.2%) who had curettage history had retained placenta. The result of Chi-square analysis demonstrated p-value 0,001 (< α 0,05). Therefore, it can be concluded that there was a significant relationship between curettage history and the incidence of retained placenta.

Abstract:
The expedition of Zheng He's fleet to the Western Ocean1 in the first half of the 15th century is an important event in the history of navigation, which has attracted the broad attention of domestic and foreign scholars from different fields2. This paper reveals the relation between Zheng He's voyages and the Asian Monsoon from a geographical perspective. Historical records show that Zheng He's seven voyages to the Western Ocean were precisely organized and successfully carried out due to careful consideration of the conditions and periodical patterns of the Asian tropical and subtropical monsoon. Details such as fleet routes, sailing schedules, wind-waiting points, divergent and rendezvous points were painstakingly planned and arranged in advance by the organizers of the expedition, who all paid close attention to the changing patterns of the Asian Monsoon.

Abstract:
Zheng He was the greatest navigator in China's history and he conducted major oceanic voyages, before the western ‘Age of Discovery’, at a time when the Portuguese under Prince Henry were just beginning to feel their way down the coast of Africa. Under the orders of Emperor Yongle and then Emperor Xuande in the Ming Dynasty, Zheng He led a fleet which was the greatest in the world in the fifteenth century and made, in all, seven expeditions to the Western Ocean from 1405 to 1433. His fleet sailed across most of the sea areas of the Western Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, and visited more than thirty Asian and African countries and regions. This paper will mainly discuss the extraordinary achievements of Zheng He's expeditions and their navigational technology, and will also briefly evaluate their role in navigational history.

Abstract:
This article reviews a number of works, which focused on the history of emotion studies. The field is developing steadily in Western Europe and the United States, while remains almost unknown in Ukraine. Over the last decade, the number of works within the discipline has rapidly increased, which, on the one hand, has developed theoretical and methodological tools, and, on the other hand, has made it difficult to find a starting point to get acquainted with the field. Formerly, the study of emotions was almost isolated inside certain disciplines and eventually expressed in the opposition between social constructivism and universalism. Specialists in the history of emotions managed to overcome such an unconstructive analytical frame by making extensive use of developments in other disciplines, mainly anthropology and neurobiology. These borrowings helped to reconsider what emotion is, as well as its importance as an analytical category in historical research. It has been demonstrated that the meaning of experience and the forms of its expression change over time, and both are formed by cultural prescriptions. Therefore, emotion is varying historically, and cannot be basic. Neurobiologists have shown that the body and brain are involved together in the process of cognition through emotional experience. In addition, noticing that culture-made changes in the brain-body are genetically transmitted, a human being was defined as a biocultural entity. Applying these observations, historians have noticed that depending on the context, emotion is formed and experienced in different ways, and exists in constant interaction with the world. Close dependence on interaction and active involvement in space gave the understanding that emotion can be explored in relation to cultural space, as well as reasons to consider emotion as a practical involvement with the world.

Abstract:
abstractThis paper, based on documentary records, attempts a brief, systematic investigation of the main characteristics of ancient Chinese sailing directions in terms of content and form as well as development. The evolution of Chinese sailing directions can be divided historically into the following periods and categories:1. Non-written records.2. Primitive written forms.3. From non-quantitative description to quantitative description.4. Quantitative description with charts,5 . Charts aided by written descriptions. In the course of his examination of these categories, the author analyses the most important sailing directions in Chinese history, and concludes that, Zheng He Hang Hai Tu (Zheng He's Nautical Charts) compiled in the first half of the fifteenth century, are not only the first illustrative sailing directions which do not rely on written directions but appear to be the first nautical chart collection for ocean-going sailing in history. Finally, the author points out that, although western sailing directions have contributed greatly to navigational science and technology, the Chinese contribution to the development of sailing directions, deserves greater recognition.

Abstract:
There is a popular belief that Cape Town’s Maynardville Theatre was founded in 1955, and first used in 1956, as the brainchild of the two professional actresses Cecilia Sonnenberg and René Ahrenson. While this is true of the Shakespeare-in-the-Park productions over the years, the use of Maynardville as a performance venue dates back to 1950 and the efforts of Margaret Molteno, the Athlone Committee for Nursery School Education and the University of Cape Town Ballet Company. This article traces the evolution of the popular theatre venue from the first production of a triple bill (comprising Les Sylphides, St Valentine’s Night and Les Diversions) in a makeshift theatre in the Maynardville Park grounds in 1950, to the introduction of Shakespeare in 1956, and ultimately the outdoor theatre of today with its annual Shakespeare and ballet productions. The Shakespearean history is already well-documented, so this article focuses more specifically on the somewhat forgotten role played by ballet productions in that history. The article includes a short history of the original property and the creation of the public park, as well as a full list of the ballets and plays performed at Maynardville since 1950.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate in-depth the process of forming career identity of adolescents who were homeschooled in a life history study. The specific research agenda is to look at the process of forming career identity in the course of life for homeschooled adolescents, and to look at the turning points in life in the process of forming career identity. To this end, data were collected through three in-depth interviews from August 2022 for adolescents who had homeschooling for eight years from the age of 11. The collected data were analyzed using Mandelbaum’s life history analysis framework. As a result of the analysis, the study participants’ areas of life are defined as “Family Life Area - Fantasy in Career Development with Jjangi’s Family,” “School in the System - Why Jjangi could not find meaning in school 1,” and “Jjangi and Jangjeonggi 2 in Career Development” who discover themselves through homeschooling. The turning point in life is ‘Meeting a role model - Real life in class with a role model and career development 1: Back to institutional education to become a doctor’. The adaptation methods were analyzed as “the crisis is an opportunity- turning the grades in classrooms into reality and positive thoughts learned at the cram school,” “fight with oneself-reality in career development 2: being stricter with oneself,” and “standing again like a Ottogi-leaving the cram school and beginning a journey of new challenge.” In the conclusion section, opinions were suggested on what is necessary for teenagers who were homeschooled in the process of forming career identity and the limitations of this study were presented.
