Abstract:
AimsThe frequency and burden of suicidality in obsessive-compulsive and related disorders have historically been under-reported, despite research pointing to a significant association between OCD and suicidality. Likewise, OCD is frequently undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. This study looks at coroners’ reports relating to suicides in UK, Australia and Canada in order to:Explore characteristics of suspected or confirmed cases of OCD in coroners’ reportsIdentify instances of possible undiagnosed or misdiagnosed OCDIdentify recurring themes in the reportsMethod1869 publicly available coroners’ reports were accessed from England (n = 200), Scotland (n = 128), Canada (n = 680) and Australia (n = 861). Reports were screened in order to identify individuals who had either a diagnosis of OCD (n = 16), a diagnosis of a related condition (n = 4), or indications of possible undiagnosed OCD (n = 12). Wherever possible, demographic and psychiatric characteristics were extracted for statistical analysis. Qualitative thematic analysis was carried out on selected reports.Result32 cases of interest were identified from analysis of coroners’ reports of suicides that took place between the years of 2000 and 2020. Breakdown by country was as follows:United Kingdom: n = 6 (1.8% of total reports analysed from United Kingdom)Canada n = 3 (0.4% of total reports analysed from Canada)Australia n = 23 (2.7% of total reports analysed from Australia)Among those with possible undiagnosed OCD, common experiences were fear of causing harm, intrusive thoughts of guilt and shame, and compulsive checking and/or reassurance seeking. Further themes included: misdiagnosis, failings in mental health care, stigma and discrimination.ConclusionIndividuals with OCD are thought to be up to ten times more likely to die by suicide, with this risk increasing in the presence of psychiatric comorbidities. However, OCD remains underdiagnosed, and this may be reflected in the relatively low number of suicides identified for this study where OCD was diagnosed before death. The low numbers may also point to a tendency among both coroners and healthcare professionals to underestimate the association between OCD and suicidality.Qualitative analysis of the coroners’ reports identified a theme of intolerable distress. This distress was documented most extensively in reports where OCD was strongly indicated but never diagnosed, highlighting the impact of missed, late or incorrect diagnosis.Notably, nearly all of the reports reveal repeated attempts by the individual to seek help. Despite this, many experienced stigma, mental health service failings and missed opportunities for help in the months preceding their deaths.

Abstract:
AbstractObsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is an important mental health problem. The Australian National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing estimates the 12-month prevalence of OCD is 1.9% (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2007). Individuals with OCD experience considerable impairment in daily functioning. Cognitive and behavioural therapy for OCD has been shown to be effective, however, accessibility to evidence based treatments is limited in Australia, especially for those living in rural and remote communities. Treatment delivered in a remote fashion may improve accessibility to such treatments. The present review aimed to evaluate the current status of evidence based treatments for OCD delivered remotely.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThe experience of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms that have a religious theme is common. Recent research has found that religious participants with religious OCD symptoms frequently turn to religious advisors, such as imams or clergy, for help to understand and alleviate their symptoms. As such, the advice provided by imams or clergy may have an important impact on the response of the person seeking help. This study examined the attitudes, beliefs and experiences of 64 Muslim imams with mosque-goers who had religious OCD symptoms, particularly scrupulosity. This study also examined imams’ familiarity with first-line psychological treatments for OCD such as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Sunni imams from Australia and Shia imams from Iran completed an online survey based on the research of Deacon, Vincent, and Zhang (2012), which was conducted with Christian clergy in the United States. Results showed that the majority of imams were unfamiliar with scrupulosity as a possible symptom of a mental health problem, such as OCD, and with ERP as a recognised treatment for OCD. While 37% of participants reported having been approached by mosque-goers for help with scrupulosity, only 9% referred mosque-goers to mental health professionals, and only one imam reported having referred a mosque-goer for ERP. Sunni imams located in Australia were more likely to provide advice inconsistent with the ERP approach and were also significantly less likely than Shia imams located in Iran to recommend referral to a mental health professional who was not affiliated with their own religious denomination. Finally, Sunni imams had significantly higher scores than Shia imams on Thought Action Fusion (TAF) subscales. Results of multiple regression analysis revealed that TAF explained a considerable amount of the variance related to ERP-inconsistent advice. Research implications and limitations are discussed.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to compare the impact of management and colleagues on the perception of work harassment and outcomes of local government employees in Australia and the USA. Design/methodology/approach – Completed surveys from local government employees (265 from the USA and 250 from Australia) were analysed using structural equation modelling and an ANOVA. Findings – The results depict support for the overall measurement and structural models showing that workplace relationships impact on work harassment, and in turn employee outcomes (psychological wellbeing and Organisational Citizenship Behaviour-Individual (OCB-I)), although not all paths were accepted for each country. Statistically significant differences were found between the Australian and USA samples for both the measurement and structural models, with the sample from the USA showing much higher levels of satisfaction with workplace relationships, higher levels of psychological wellbeing, OCB-I, and lower perceptions of work harassment. Practical implications – The findings provide implications that Australian and US local government employees, positioned closest to the public, experience work harassment probably as a result of chronic under-resourcing both in terms of manpower and other resources, and coupled with unrealistically high-performance targets. The results depict that such work harassment is resulting in lower psychological wellbeing (USA only) and lower extra-role behaviour associated with OCB-I (Australia and USA). Originality/value – The value of this paper is that it benchmarks the impact of workplace relationships on work harassment for local government employees across two Anglo-American countries.

Peter Neumann was a major figure in UK mathematics during a career spanning over 50 years. His parents, Bernhard and Hanna Neumann, were group theorists, so it was perhaps inevitable that Peter would become a specialist in the same area. A notable occurrence, and a sign of things to come, was the publication in 1962 of a joint paper with his parents which gave rise to the concept of an NNN group. There can be few instances in mathematics of three members of the same family co-authoring a paper. His parents spent many years in Australia and Peter maintained strong links with that country throughout his own professional life.

Abstract:
Individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) experience a significant deterioration in quality of life (Fontenelle et al., 2010; Kugler et al., 2013) and marked functional impairment (Markarian et al., 2010). Despite this, a large proportion of these individuals do not seek any type of help (Goodwin, Koenen, Hellman, Guardino, & Struening, 2002; Mayerovitch et al., 2003). The current study investigated the barriers to seeking OCD treatment using an online survey that was completed by 86 participants living in Australia who identified as having OCD. Results showed that the three main barriers to seeking OCD treatment were: (a) preference for handling problems alone; (b) cost of treatment; and (c) lack of knowledge about available mental health treatment. Individuals who reported receiving an OCD diagnosis (n = 57) demonstrated more severe symptoms, poorer quality of life and higher symptom intrusiveness than those who had not received a diagnosis (n = 29). Furthermore, significant associations were found between religious affiliation and barriers to treatment where greater religious attendance was correlated with a higher likelihood of identifying cultural factors as a barrier to OCD treatment. Additionally, higher levels of religious attendance were associated with a greater understanding of where to go for OCD treatment, not wanting to handle problems alone, and recognising that symptoms are a problem. This article considers approaches to overcoming barriers to accessing effective evidence-based treatment for people with OCD symptoms, and highlights future directions for research.

This Master’s thesis relate some relational dynamics of Aboriginal youth of the Kimberley – which is situated at the top end of Western Australia – specifically from Kununurra and Kalumburu. It results from a pre-fieldwork (2010) and a field research (2012). It is through sport, especially Australian football (Australian Rules Football) and basketball, as well as playful activities, including dance, that I could account for the peculiarities of these young Aborigines. Other spheres of their lives also caught my attention, mainly the importance of the extended family in aboriginal forms of sociality and solidarity, and relationships, often difficult, with the dominant society (Euro-Australians). Using an overview of the wide but also local socio-historical context – distinguishing the semi-urban life (Kununurra) versus remote community life (Kalumburu) – I could better explain various aspects of their contemporaneity.

Abstract:
Contaminated land is a big issue in Sweden and worldwide. Conventional methods like excavation are commonly used to remediate polluted areas, but also cause elevated costs and a significant environmental impact. The interest in phytormemediation, which is the ability of plants to remediate contaminated land, as it has become more popular during recent years. Common reed (Phragmites australis) and Salix sp. were tested in this study to assess the potential for heavy metal uptake by analysis of heavy metal reduction in the soil. The plants were assessed with the purpose to be used within phytoremediation as well as potential source for biofuel. A field study was included in this project at Ekeby wastewater treatment plant in Eskilstuna, Sweden. Three sample points were chosen based on previous environmental studies conducted by Norconsult AB. Soil material contaminated with metals and local populations of Salix sp and common reed were collected for analysis in a pot experiment were differences in metal content in the soil before and after cultivation were investigated. In total 3 shoots of Salix sp and 3 shoots of common reed were cultivated in soil material from each sample point in a greenhouse at Stockholm University. Soil material from each sample point were used as control and were placed in the same greenhouse during the pot experiment. The sampled plants were grown in contaminated soil material for 80 days and regularly irrigated with distilled water. The soil material was analyzed with respect to metals before and after cultivation of the local plants. After the growth period the results did not show any significant differences in the metal content of the soil compared to the control pot. It is assumed that the cause is due to the relatively short cultivation period, the low number of individual plants used and the number of analyzes performed. The remediation potential for the local plants of Salix sp and common reed could probably be determined in a more suitable way though analysis of metals from the harvested plant material. Salix and common reed are used as biofuel in Sweden, but quality, management and practical limitations affect the yield and the waste that has to be taken care of. Further studies should be carried out to evaluate economic and environmental benefits through implementation of phytoremediation on contaminated land to assess when during the season the plants should be harvested to accumulate the greatest level of contaminants with consideration to the plants as a competitive bio-material. Phytoremediation works and has been demonstrated through several studies. However, a clear organization and knowledge of the local environmental characteristics of the contaminated site are vital features to implement this measure with a good result.

Abstract:
This degree project shows how four language teachers teach foreign languages with focus oncommunicative competence, and how their vision of teaching correspond to their reality in the classroom. How do they motivate the students in class and are the conditions good enough tohelp the teachers reach the national goals? A teacher’s vision is formed by his or her education and experiences. However, there are a number of factors which can help or hinder a teacher to reach his or her ideal teaching. Among these factors are the curriculum, the preknowledgeof the students and available technical resources. The method used in this thesis is qualitative interviews with two Australian and two Swedish foreign language teachers. This method was chosen in order to give the interviewees the possibility to speak more freely about their vision compared to their reality. The results show that there are more similarities than differences between Sweden and Australia when we look at the teachers’ ideals. There are anumber of factors why the teachers do not reach their ideals. The findings show that it is necessary with adequate teacher training to uphold qualitative language teaching corresponding to continuously changing curriculums. Moreover, the curriculum mentions communicative language teaching more and more today, but the teachers experience difficulties when teaching and evaluating communicative competence. Another important issue is the lack of money and time for starting and maintaining international exchanges.

Abstract:
Few Swedish biotechnology SMEs are currently represented in the Australian market. A survey of 96 Swedish biotechnology companies demonstrated that both their knowledge of the market and their interest in establishing a business in the country are low. The main reasons for this are the geographic distance of the market and the lack of resources to examine new markets. Since most biotechnology companies offer niche products to a small domestic market, all possible markets should be considered and none should be excluded based singularly on geographic distance. This paper analyses the potential of the Australian biotechnology market for Swedish small- and medium-sized biotechnology companies, and aims to give a foundation which Swedish companies can utilize when considering entering the Australian market. The market attractiveness and its strategic importance for Swedish biotechnology companies are evaluated and presented in this thesis. A number of factors such as market size and growth, supporting organizations, research base, clusters, competitive situation and entry barriers are examined. Consequently the problem is defined as: “What potential opportunities and limitations exist in the Australian biotechnology market for Swedish small- and medium-sized biotech companies?” Literature has been reviewed in depth, numerous on-site interviews have been carried out with Swedish biotech companies as well as Swedish and Australian officials and advisors, and local influences have been studied. The conclusions identify several key aspects, potential areas of interest and some limitations for Swedish biotechnology companies, which are discussed and presented in this paper.

Abstract:

Reath, Warren Anne. "Developing multilingual literacies in Sweden and Australia : Opportunities and challenges in mother tongue instruction and multilingual study guidance in Sweden and community language education in Australia." Doctoral thesis, Stockholms universitet, Institutionen för språkdidaktik, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-144745.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to learn about opportunities for and challenges to the development of multilingual literacies in three forms of education in Sweden and Australia that teach or draw on immigrant languages. In Sweden mother tongue instruction and multilingual study guidance are in focus and in Australia, a community language school. Taking an ecological approach to the research sites, the thesis investigates how language ideologies, organization of the form of education and language practices impact on the development of multilingual literacies. A range of linguistic ethnographic data including 75 lesson observations, 48 interviews, field notes and photographs has been analyzed against the theoretical backdrop of the continua of biliteracy (Hornberger, 1989; Hornberger & Skilton-Sylvester, 2000), heteroglossia (Bakhtin, 1981) and emerging theories of translanguaging (García & Li, 2014) to investigate the questions. The thesis ties together the results of four interlocking case studies investigating the above-mentioned forms of education. Study I analyses the syllabus for mother tongue instruction in Sweden and finds that while aligning with the overall values of the curriculum for the compulsory school, a hidden curriculum constrains implementation. In Study II, multilingual practices during multilingual study guidance in Sweden are analysed, and demonstrate how translanguaging helps recently arrived students reach the learning goals of subjects in the Swedish curriculum. In study III, systematic analysis of indexicals reveals contrasting language narratives about language and language development in and around a Vietnamese community language school in Australia. Study IV focuses on mother tongue instruction in Sweden and through analysis of audio-recordings of lessons, interviews and field notes, finds three dimensions of linguistic diversity infuse the subject. Opportunities for the development of multilingual literacies are created when there is equal access to spaces for developing literacies in different immigrant languages, within which language ideologies that recognize and build on the heteroglossic diversity of students’ linguistic repertoires dynamically inform the organization of education and classroom practices. Challenges are created when monoglossic ideologies restrict access to or ignore linguistic diversity and when there is a lack of dynamic engagement with implementation and organization. Basing organization, and classroom strategies around the linguistic reality of the students and the genres they need, benefits the development of multilingual literacies in both settings and can help students become resourceful language users (Pennycook, 2012b, 2014).

Abstract:
This study is about the assessment of foster care families and what´s considered a suitable foster care home. It is a comparative study between two welfare countries, Sweden and Australia. The study aims to increase the understanding of social workers assessment on foster care families and examines what a suitable foster care home looks like for a few social workers in each country. The study was carried out through five qualitative interviews, three of them in Sweden and two of them in Australia. With a social constructivist theory the result was carried out and analysed. The result of the study shows differences in the way social workers in each country talk about the suitability of a foster carer. In Australia the social workers that participated in the study spoke about a suitable foster family as a family that is safe and can provide a safe environment. In Sweden the social workers spoke about a suitable family as a secure and stable family. The result of the study also shows similarities between the two countries, as an example the nuclear family is still the norm and other family structures are exceptions of the norm.

Abstract:
The fact is that every individual leaves behind vast amounts of data, companies collect this data and use the knowledge gained from it in a variety of ways. One area that is lucrative for the use of Big data is the financial sector. A prominent example of the use of Big data is real-time stock market insights. However, there are still industries in which Big data is not yet used for various reasons. One of these industries is the tax consulting sector, which will be the focus of this research. With its high entry hurdles, direct dependence on the legislator, and the associated atypical data sets, the tax consulting sector represents a special use case within the financial sector. Because big data has not been used in the tax consulting sector yet and that the setting is atypical compared to other sectors, a closer analysis of potential influences on services, the working environment, and quality is of particular interest here. This analysis is the core of this study and was carried out using an interpretative qualitative approach in the form of a case study. In this case study, the three most important stakeholders of Austrian tax consultancies- employers, employees, and clients - were interviewed on the one hand through interviews and on the other hand through a survey with open-ended questions. The results were then compared in the discussion with the changes that studies in other fields have identified. The results of the study showed that the stakeholders predominantly assume that the quality of services will improve significantly through the use of big data, especially in accounting and business management services. Stakeholders also predicted a positive development concerning the range of services offered. It was also predicted that the range of services offered could increase on the one hand and that services of a business management nature could benefit enormously on the other. In the area of the working environment, employees said that increased training activity and process adaptation would be the only significant changes. In the area of risks, all three stakeholder groups agreed and mentioned data protection. Interesting differences between the three stakeholder groups were on the one hand that the employers gave very detailed answers, which allows the assumption that they have already thought carefully about the topic of big data. On the other hand, in contrast to the other two groups, the employees did not primarily think of their area (work environment) in the analysis, but of that of the clients and thus of the provision of the service. This underlines the strong focus on client satisfaction and encourages a more intensive involvement in the design process. In contrast to other studies, this thesis analyses the influences on the areas not from a retrospective point of view, but a prospective point of view. This approach allows an unbiased look at the opinions of stakeholders and thus provides the best possible information for the design of big data tools for the tax consulting sector. Besides, by comparing this with changes found in other studies, it is possible to estimate how the use of big data in the tax consulting sector differs from other sectors.

Abstract:
Abstract The Austrian social security system covers a broad range of social risks, most of them via a compulsory social insurance system that usually ties eligibility to current or former legal employment. Nationality is of minor importance once legal employment has been achieved and, for tax-financed benefits like child benefits and minimum-income guarantee, legal residence in Austria can be proven. With almost one of five employees in Austria being foreign-born, Austria ranks high in terms of foreign participation on the labour market. While reforms under the previous Government were aimed at restricting migrants’ access to (full) benefits, it is open if the coalition formed in January 2020 will pursue a more moderate path in this regard.

Abstract:
AbstractAustralia’s education system reflects its history of federalism. State and territory governments are responsible for administering education within their jurisdiction and across the sector comprising government (public), Catholic systemic and other independent schooling systems. They collaborate on education policy with the federal government. Over the past two decades the federal government has taken a greater role in funding across the education sector, and as a result of this involvement and the priorities of federal governments of the day, Australia now has one of the highest rates of non-government schooling in the OECD. Funding equity across the sectors has become a prominent issue. Concerns have been compounded by evidence of declining student performance since Australia’s initial participation in PISA in 2000, and the increasing gap between our high achievers and low achievers. This chapter explores Australia’s PISA 2018 results and what they reveal about the impact of socioeconomic level on student achievement. It also considers the role of school funding and the need to direct support to those schools that are attempting to educate the greater proportion of an increasingly diverse student population including students facing multiple layers of disadvantage.

Austrian part of the Austrian-Slovak cross-border region in the hinterland of Bratislava is attractive for life to many Slovaks who have decided to move in here in recent years. The aim of the paper is to present the issue of cross-border residential suburbanization and transnational migration on the example of the Slovak population living in the Austrian border municipality of Kittsee. Through a questionnaire survey, we were trying to find out in which of the two countries (Slovakia and Austria) the respondents most often perform selected activities of everyday life, and what the reasons for and intensity of their trips to Slovakia are. The results of the survey showed that the majority of respondents carry out work activities and participate in cultural and sporting events mainly in Slovakia. On the contrary, in the municipality of residence or other Austrian municipalities, they mainly purchase daily consumer goods and their children attend pre-school and school facilities. The most common reason for traveling to Slovakia among the respondents is visiting family, friends and acquaintances. Based on the results, it is possible to state that in the Austrian-Slovak cross-border region there are tendencies of the phenomenon of transnational migration, in which the inhabitants enjoy the benefits of living in the area near the border.

Austria perceives itself as “cultural superpower”. Therefore, it seems fairly surprising that an own fundamental rights provision to protect the arts was positivised only in 1982. The socio-political situation in the perished Austrian Empire and the Weimar Constitution had a decisive impact on attempts to adopt a corresponding provision after World War One. Following the horrors of World War Two, the young Second Republic of Austria used arts and culture as tool to draw the picture of a peace-loving “Kulturnation” sui generis. In the following years a significant cleavage between the Austrian self-perception and the legal-political reality can be observed (also) in regard to Artistic Freedom. Neither Austria’s authoritarian past nor its Nazi past and related crimes had a significant impact on the legislative process.

Abstract:
Abstract The Austrian Research Centers Seibersdorf (ARCS) serve as the country’s centralised facilitiy for the treatment, conditioning and interim storage of low- and intermediate level radioactive waste (Radwaste). All Radwaste originating in Austria is transferred to ARCS and comes from one or several sources: The former operation of a research reactor, the application of radioactive materials in medicine, R&D, industry, IAEA Laboratories at Seibersdorf, and technically enhanced natural radioactive materials, such as by-product at industrial metallurgical processes and other processes, is transferred to ARCS for treatment, conditioning and interim storage. Dependent on the waste category, the relevant treatment technology is applied. In total more then 6900 m3 of low and intermediate level radioactive solid wastes originating from Austria were treated in the period 1976 to 2000. The aim of treatment and conditioning is the safe enclosure of the Radwaste by the use of barriers to surround and isolate the waste and transform it to an insoluble form. At the same time it is important to reduce the volume of the raw waste by applying appropriate treatment technologies, in order to save space in the storage facilities and thereby achieving a cost savings.

Abstract:
The Deutsche Rohstoff AG, TOMRA Sorting Solutions| mining and the RWTH Aachen University have performed a study on the applicability of sensor-based sorting in the process of tungsten ore for theWolfram Camp Mine in Australia. The aim of this project was pre-concentrating of tungsten ore by removal of barren material. The pre-concentration can lead to energy and water savings, decrease of reagent input in downstream processes and increase minerals reserve utilization by lowering the cut-off grade. A comprehensive research programme concluded that the best suited sensor-technology for this material was XRay Transmission (XRT). The XRT sensor provides a highly efficient system for classifying and sorting different materials based on their atomic density. XRT sorting is already applied as well in the recycling as in the minerals industry. The results of the test runs have shown that XRT sorting can effectively remove and reduce barren material and that it is an effective technology for the pre-concentration of tungsten ore.

Abstract:
Swell events show a large variety of configurations when they arrive at sites off West Africa after generation and propagation of waves across the Atlantic Ocean. Within the West Africa Swell Project (WASP JIP), these different configurations have been described and discussed and the ability of numerical models to reproduce faithfully their properties has been assessed from comparisons with in-situ measurements. During the austral winter months, swells approach West African coast from the south to south-westerly direction. These swells are generated by storms in the South Atlantic mainly between 40°S and 60°S. But during austral summer, north-westerly swells are also observed coming from North Atlantic. Typical situations of superposition of these different swells are illustrated in the paper. In spite of a poor overlapping between numerical and in-situ measurements databases at the time of the WASP project, and of reduced durations of measurement campaigns, comparisons between in situ measurements and hindcast models permitted identification of the limitations of the different numerical models available. Three sites have been used for this study, one in the Gulf of Guinea with directional Waverider and Wavescan buoys, a second one off Namibia with a directional Waverider and one last instrumented with two wavestaffs off Cabinda (Angola). In addition, the existence of infra-gravity waves in shallow water measurements has been investigated.

Abstract:
The Austro-Hungarian monarchy in the middle of the 19th century not only strengthened its defensive line toward the Ottoman territories in the hinterland of the Bay of Kotor, but also constructed a network of shoreline defences to safeguard its newly acquired territories from naval attacks. As part of the same initiative, the sea entrance to the Bay of Kotor, strategically very important part of the Adriatic coast at the time, was also fortified. Three forts were built as the first defensive line, one on the cape Ostro, one on the islet Žanjica, called Mamula, and the third one on the Cape Arza. Their bases were stone-built casemates with flanking guns and open mercer batteries placed on platforms. Unfortunately, they became obsolete very quickly because they could not meet modern defensive requirements. Given that they were very visible and therefore an easy target for increasingly sophisticated naval weapons, a number of minor and major adjustments were made over time that resulted in changes and adjustments to the building structure. With the end of the importance and political influence of Austria-Hungary, the fortification systems it built lost their value and deteriorated over time. Today, they not only reflect an important historical and political moment, the way of warfare and defence at that time, but also the monarchy's need for the appearance of forts to be a combination of certain architectural taste and military needs.

Abstract:

Advanced modeling of structures using combination of non‐linear finite element methods (NLFEM) and reliability analysis is a strong tool for realistic assessment of structures. NLFEM simulation has been recently a well‐established approach to the analysis of concrete structures since the response of the structure can be simulated quite realistically. In combination with fully probabilistic approaches, one can consider the randomness of input parameters such as material, technological and environmental characteristics that can have a direct impact on economic aspects during structural lifetime. However, guidelines fully describing NLFEM modeling of structures and safety formats are not available until now. In the framework of the European Project INTERREG AUSTRIA‐CZECH REPUBLIC "ATCZ190 SAFEBRIDGE", a number of existing bridges are carefully selected to be studied and modeled with NLFEM on deterministic and stochastic levels based on the upcoming Austrian standard ON B4008‐2. The assessment of structures will be described and documented in detail and the results will assist the development of a guideline. This guideline targets to help the engineering community perform accurate NLFEM analysis and to assist the structure's owners to check the accuracy of the assessment process. The current paper focuses on the presentation and discussion of statistical information about road and railway bridges provided by the main bridge operators in both countries. Moreover, the most commonly addressed structural characteristics of bridges within the program region are summarized and the further future steps of the project are briefly described.

Abstract:
Austrian district heating (DH) has experienced a fast increasing trend for the last 30 years (with the exception of the period 2010-2014), resulting in a triplication of delivered heat; in the year 2018, with about 2400 networks and 20 TWh supply, DH covered 6.4% of the final energy consumption (1122.5 PJ). Worth to underline is also that this growth of Austrian district heating has been about twice faster than the one of the energy demand in the same period. Currently, district heating provides about 26% of the Austrian households with the energy requested for space heating and domestic hot water preparation.

The Research and Technology Report is the status report on federally funded research, technology and innovation in Austria and is commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) in consultation with the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Economic Affairs (BMAW). The present report is marked by complex change at different levels, driven on the one hand by multiple crises that not only change the innovation behaviour of companies and scientific actors, but also bring about changed framework conditions. The Twin Transition is omnipresent. In this report, the focus is on the Green Transformation in research and business.

Abstract:
Through the Quad forum, the United States, Australia, Japan and India have committed to pursuing an open, accessible and secure technology ecosystem and offering a democratic alternative to China’s techno-authoritarian model. This report assesses artificial intelligence collaboration across the Quad and finds that while Australia, Japan and India each have close AI-related research and investment ties to both the United States and China, they collaborate far less with one another.

Goreczky, Péter. Decoupling or diversification? Dilemmas of India, Japan, and Australia in shaping economic relations with China. Külügyi és Külgazdasági Intézet, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.47683/kkielemzesek.e-2021.29.

Abstract:
US allies in the Indo-Pacific region, India, Japan and Australia are all making considerable efforts to reduce economic dependence on China. In the case of India, border clashes boost the political motivations of the trend, while in the economic sense the country’s trade deficit, the import of the pharmaceutical and automotive industries, and the determinative role of Chinese capital in the tech sector result in a unique dependency. As for Japanese companies, China remains a key manufacturing base and market, and therefore Tokyo is interested in the diversification of supply chains and manufacturing locations instead of downsizing the relationship completely. Regarding Australia, the overwhelming weight of China in the country’s export is considered a major exposure; however, in the case of iron ore, which is a key item in bilateral trade, the dependency also exists on China’s side. Although for all three countries it is a reasonable goal to enhance the resilience of supply chains and diversify economic relations, the “China plus one” strategy seems to be more beneficial for the future than cutting off economic relations with China across the board.

There is a fraught history to the relationship between creative industries on the one hand and innovation and entrepreneurship policy and programs on the other. Such policy and program frameworks have rarely been inclusive of creative industries... This is, however, what we see happening in South Australia.

Thomson, Sue, Nicole Wernert, Sima Rodrigues, and Elizabeth O'Grady. TIMSS 2019 Australia. Volume I: Student performance. Australian Council for Educational Research, December 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.37517/978-1-74286-614-7.

Full text
Abstract:
The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is an international comparative study of student achievement directed by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). TIMSS was first conducted in 1995 and the assessment conducted in 2019 formed the seventh cycle, providing 24 years of trends in mathematics and science achievement at Year 4 and Year 8. In Australia, TIMSS is managed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and is jointly funded by the Australian Government and the state and territory governments. The goal of TIMSS is to provide comparative information about educational achievement across countries in order to improve teaching and learning in mathematics and science. TIMSS is based on a research model that uses the curriculum, within context, as its foundation. TIMSS is designed, broadly, to align with the mathematics and science curricula used in the participating education systems and countries, and focuses on assessment at Year 4 and Year 8. TIMSS also provides important data about students’ contexts for learning mathematics and science based on questionnaires completed by students and their parents, teachers and school principals. This report presents the results for Australia as a whole, for the Australian states and territories and for the other participants in TIMSS 2019, so that Australia’s results can be viewed in an international context, and student performance can be monitored over time. The results from TIMSS, as one of the assessments in the National Assessment Program, allow for nationally comparable reports of student outcomes against the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians. (Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs, 2008).
