Abstract:
The present study investigated the psychometric properties of the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) Observer form of the five-factor model of personality by examining agreement between self- and observer ratings. Both partners of 49 young, adult couples rated themselves and their partners on the NEO-FFI. The results provide preliminary evidence of the measurement utility of the NEO-FFI Observer form. Specifically, (a) each personality scale possessed acceptable levels of internal reliability, (b) five factors consistent with the five-factor model of personality emerged in both ratings forms, and (c) there was significant self-observer agreement for all five personality scales. Self-observer agreement was assessed by correlations as well as analyses that test a more stringent definition of agreement. Overall, there is consensus across analyses that points to a substantial amount of concordance between partners' self- and observer ratings.

Abstract:
The relationship of self-rated to observer-rated scales has been infrequently studied in patients with DSM-III defined borderline personality disorder. This study was designed to derminine a) the amount of correlation between these two types of rating scales in borderline patients and b) whether borderline patients scored significantly higher than dysthymic controls on self or observer-rated scales. Results indicated that self-rated scale scores were higher within the borderline group. Self and observer-rated scales were highly correlated within the borderline group. Borderline patients did not differ from controls when scores of self and observer-rated scales were compared between groups. The relationship of these results to previous findings was equivocal.

Abstract:
The observer perspective of seeing one's self in recollection is often associated with memories that involve anxiety and self-consciousness. Does the observer perspective increase feelings of distress, or does it minimize threat? College student participants recalled emotional but non-traumatic events from the observer (or third person) perspective and from the field (or first person) perspective. Participants rated the perspective of each memory separately, and in comparison to the opposite perspective. Field memories were rated as producing more nervousness, emotionality, and self-consciousness. Even though the frequency of the observer perspective may increase for emotional versus nonemotional memories, this perspective may be adopted because it produces less distress than the field perspective.

Abstract:
Research exploring spontaneously generated self-talk has involved recording performers’ self-talk categorized by researchers. The actor-observer bias, suggests that actors (performers) and observers (researchers) may perceive the same situation (e.g., self-talk) differently. The purpose of this study was to explore the actor-observer bias and validity of self-talk categorization. College students’ (n = 30) spontaneous self-talk was audio recorded during a dart throwing task. Participants then listened to and categorized their self-talk. Three independent researchers reviewed written transcripts and categorized the self-talk. Another three researchers who had not read the transcripts listened to audio recordings and categorized the same self-talk. Results confirmed actor-observer bias predictions. Spontaneous self-talk ratings made by participants were similar to but distinct from those made by researchers reading transcripts or listening to self-talk audio recordings. These results suggest that participant categorization of spontaneous self-talk may be a valid strategy to enhance understanding of self-talk used in competitive settings.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the perceptions of interpersonal adequacy held by preadolescent behaviour disordered boys through comparisons with perceptions held of them by putative significant others and normative comparison with their peers. The sample, selected according to behavioural status, comprised 70 boys drawn from 22 regular primary schools in south west Sydney, Australia. Thirty five boys, identified as behaviour disordered, were matched with boys whose behaviour was perceived to be appropriate in the school setting. An overview of the results would suggest that the influence of selected putative significant others on the multidimensional self concepts of preadolescent boys is not universal and varies according to behavioural classification

Schonwetter, Sara Wendi. "An Evaluation of Reactivity to Observer Presence While Self-Monitoring to Improve Swimming Performance." Scholar Commons, 2012. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4221.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study evaluated the effects of self-monitoring by swimmers to improve their performance at practice and assessed the effects of reactivity to observer presence on their performance. Additionally, it investigated the accuracy of the swimmers' self-reports. Seven public high school swim team members used program boards to self-monitor in order to increase the number of assigned laps completed at practice. Reactivity to observer presence was assessed by having a confederate record the number of laps completed during observer absent conditions. A series of AB replications and an ABAB reversal design were used. The percentage of assigned laps completed increased during the self-monitoring phases. The self-monitoring and feedback phase showed an additional increase in the percentage of assigned laps completed, and also showed an increase in the mean level of reporting accuracy by the participants. The effects from the reactivity assessment were mixed; the percentage of assigned laps completed was lower on days that the observer was absent compared to the days the observer is present for only some of the participants. More research is needed to examine reactivity effects in sport settings.

Shaffer, Jonathan Andrew. "Controlling personality tendencies: predicting observer-rated personality from the interaction between general mental ability and self-rated personality." Diss., University of Iowa, 2010. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/737.

Full text
Abstract:
Research has determined that measures of general mental ability (GMA) and personality are valid predictors of a wide range of work outcomes. Two of the most well established findings in the field of organizational psychology are that GMA and two of the Big Five personality traits, conscientiousness and emotional stability, predict overall job performance and training performance across all jobs. Though both GMA and personality are valid predictors of job performance, the validities of personality measures are much weaker than those observed for measures of GMA. Some argue that personality may play a larger role in predicting work outcomes than currently believed, but that current measures of personality do not capture the construct fully. Several researchers have attempted to increase the validity of personality measures by altering the items in the measures so that they refer specifically to work contexts, and others have examined the validity of observer ratings of personality. This study draws on the theory of cognitive buffering to test the possibility is that GMA itself that causes the impact of personality traits on real life performances to be limited. That is, that people may use their GMA to control the expression of their personality tendencies in their behavior. The results showed that GMA and personality interacted to predict peer ratings of personality, but not as initially hypothesized. Self-monitoring and personality also interacted to predict peer ratings of personality, but, again, not as hypothesized. Several possible explanations for the results of this study are discussed, including the notion that that individuals may make efforts to manage only those personality traits that are most relevant in given situations. Moreover, it may be the case that dispositions are less subject to the process of cognitive buffering than are emotions and affect. Limitations of this study and opportunities for future research are also discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
It has been demonstrated that emotion regulatory goals can be successfully accomplished using implementation intentions (e.g., Schweiger Gallo, McCulloch, Gollwitzer, 2012) or mental imagery (e.g., Davis, Ochsner, Gross, 2011) as emotion regulatory strategies. The effectiveness of these strategies was assessed by examining changes in subjective reports of experienced emotion. In the present thesis these findings are explored and extended in five experiments in which the impact of forming either an implementation intentions or an Observer visual imagery perspective on self-reports and on physiological arousal, measured by changes in Electrodermal and Heart Rate responses. Study 1 was designed to examine whether an implementation intention would be effective in realizing the emotion regulatory outcome specified in the 'then' component of this 'if-then' plan to the picture type specified in the 'if component ("If! see a weapon, then 1 will stay calm and relaxed! "), in the absence of an additional goal intention. To control for an attentional bias towards negative content, in addition to neutral pictures the participants viewed two types of negative pictures: ones depicting a weapon (then component I cue) or non-weapon negative pictures. These were viewed after either an Implementation Intention (IMP), or a Goal Intention (GI, "1 will stay calm and relaxed! "), or no self-regulatory (Control) instructions. The effectiveness of the IMP instructions was determined by comparing participants' arousal ratings to the negative pictures between experimental conditions and to the non-weapon pictures within the experimental conditions. The results showed that only participants in the IMP condition reported feeling calmer after viewing the non-weapon pictures and the weapon pictures (relative to Control and GI conditions). These findings provide a replication of Schweiger Gallo et al.'s (2009) observation that the emotion regulatory goals can be accomplished using an implementation intention, and extend them by demonstrating the effectiveness of an implementation intention in the absence of a prior goal intention. These effects are thought to reflect the benefits of forming an "if-then" plan by increasing cue (weapon picture) accessibility and enhancing the association between this cue and the emotion regulatory outcome (staying calm and relaxed).

Abstract:

Sharp, Melanie. "Validation of self-reports for use in contact research." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2013. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:3ee1df93-1a91-4645-b298-d1d2a80853ff.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to investigate whether self-report measures of contact are valid for use in research testing the ‘contact hypothesis’. The vast majority of contact research has relied on the assumed validity of self-report methods of data collection (Pettigrew & Tropp, 2006), even though the potential weaknesses of self-report methodology generally have been well documented. This reliance is necessary, as self-reports remain the only practical method so far developed of measuring certain of the facilitating conditions developed by Allport (1954/1979), and particularly of direct and indirect cross-group friendship (Pettigrew, 1998; Wright, Aron, McLaughlin-Volpe, & Ropp, 1997). However, if self-reports are not a valid method for measuring contact, the derived implications of a large portion of the research effort are potentially flawed. This thesis attempted to address this important oversight, using a variety of methods to investigate whether the use of self-reports in future research on intergroup contact is appropriate. Studies 1 and 2 demonstrated that self-reports of contact show considerable resistance to context effects, particularly in comparison with self-reports of the more subjective construct of attitudes. Studies 3-5 demonstrated that self-reports of contact agree with the observer-reports of a single observer who knows the target intimately – the spouse or parent. Studies 6 and 7 replicate this agreement through the consensually supported observer-reports of three close friends of the target, thereby reducing any variance due to individual response biases. Finally, studies 8 and 9 demonstrate the concurrent criterion-related validity of self-reports of contact, in that they are able to predict contact on a very large online network called Facebook, on which real-world rather than purely online friendships are primarily represented. These findings offer considerable support for the validity of self-reports as a suitable method for measuring contact. As self-reports remain the only method which has thus far proven suitable for the measurement of those aspects of contact which are essential for exploration of the contact hypothesis, this thesis presents a very heartening and optimistic conclusion and supports the continued use of self-reports in contact research.

Diehl, Rafael. "Máquinas, inscrições e observador : o problema da visualização do conhecimento numa abordagem sistêmica." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/27966.

Full text
Abstract:
On this thesis, we discuss that the inscriptions are the interface from which it is possible to consider the conditions of observers methodologically on the knowledge visualization; therefore, we consider the formal systems limits, the representation crisis, and the Turing Machine Model as affirmations of the embodied condition of knowledge. In this context, the notion of information proves to be an indicative of a paradigmatic shift from a representational model of knowledge, in which the position of an observer in the face of representations does not infer the configuration that was analyzed, and a systemic model, which demands consideration of different levels of organization and its limitations that emerge from self-reference. We propose the notion of inscription surface to tackle the relation of different kinds of mechanical operability, as the one found in computers, and the consensual domain of language that helps one to explain a world perceived as reality. This notion is forged as a theoretic-methodological stratagem to avoid, in educational and research contexts, the reification of a position related to the explanatory frameworks that reinforces dichotomies such as nature-culture and delegitimizes the enunciative potential of any humanbeing. The stratagem is proposed in three fields of analysis and readability: the field of technical conditions of the surfaces; a position of observation stabilization on the inscription surfaces, and the political context of the use of such surfaces to share and explain.

Abstract:
The present work provides an experimental validation for the robust performance of a nonlinear self-tuning observer in accurately estimating the state variables of a structure with configuration-dependent natural frequencies. The observer design combines the advantages of the variable structure systems theory and the self-tuning fuzzy logic technique. The robustness of the observer enables the use of an imprecise model of the plant while the self-tuning characteristic eliminates the need for the extensive tuning of a fixed rule-based expert fuzzy inference system. The experimental set-up consists of a spherical robotic manipulator with the protruding portion of the third link from the second link considered to be deformable. The prismatic joint induces considerable variations in the natural frequencies of the flexible element. The observer has been implemented to estimate the generalized coordinates pertaining to the flexible motion of the third link. The experimental results confirm the robustness of the observer in accurately estimating the required state variables of the system in spite of significant modeling imprecision and disturbances.

Abstract:
Self-sensing refers to extracting the position information from the electromagnetic signals instead of from a physical position sensor. Self-sensing actuator has the benefit of significantly reducing hardware effort. In this paper, we investigate two types of observers: Boxcar Window Observer and Kalman Filter. The performance of both observers has been compared in simulation and experimentally.

Abstract:
In non-uniform sampled systems, the measurements are arriving at irregular time intervals. However, the control is updated at regular time intervals. An observer is required to obtain the estimate of the states during the control update times. We evaluate two observer designs: A Kalman filter and a gain-scheduling observer. The Kalman filter has the optimal performance. However, it is computationally expensive. In contrast, a recent gain-scheduling synthesis technique [1] can be used to design a time varying observer, whose time varying coefficients are a function of the measured sampling time variations. This observer is suboptimal, but it has significantly less computational complexity as compared to the Kalman filter, which makes it feasible to implement. Simulations are conducted for a self servo writing process in hard disk drives, in order to evaluate performance of H2 gain-scheduling observer design.

Schneider, Sarah, Daniel Wolf, and Astrid Schütz. Workshop for the Assessment of Social-Emotional Competences : Application of SEC-I and SEC-SJT. Otto-Friedrich-Universität, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.20378/irb-49180.

Full text
Abstract:
The modular workshop offers a science-based introduction to the concept of social-emotional competences. It focuses on the psychological assessment of such competences in in institutions specialized in the professional development of people with learning disabilities. As such, the workshop is primarily to be understood as an application-oriented training programme for professionals who work in vocational education and use (or teach the usage of) the assessment tools SEC-I and SEC-SJT (Inventory and Situational Judgment Test for the assessment of social-emotional competence in young people with (sub-) clinical cognitive or psychological impairment) which were developed at the University of Bamberg. The workshop comprises seven subject areas that can be flexibly put together as required: theoretical basics and definitions of social-emotional competence, the basics of psychological assessment, potential difficulties in its use, usage of the self-rating scale, the situational judgment test, the observer-rating scale, and objective observation of behaviour. The general aim of this workshop is to learn how to use and apply the assessment tools in practical settings.

The CIE 2016 Colour Appearance Model for Colour Management Systems: CIECAM16. International Commission on Illumination, March 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.25039/tr.248.2022.

Full text
Abstract:
A colour appearance model provides a viewing-condition-specific method for the transformation of the tristimulus values, X, Y, Z, to or from perceptual attribute correlates. This publication describes a specific colour appearance model, CIECAM16, which may be useful for colour management systems, used in the imaging industries, that involve related colours. The main applications of the model are the evaluation of photographic prints and self-luminous displays, where the colours will be perceived as related colours. This model is based on the CAM16 colour appearance model. It consists of a chromatic adaptation transform and equations to calculate a set of perceptual attribute correlates using the CIE 1931 standard colorimetric observer. This report provides revisions to the CIE colour appearance model for colour management systems that involve related colours, CIECAM02. The CIECAM16 model is simpler than the original CIECAM02 model, but it maintains the same prediction performance for visual data as the original model. The evolution and application of this colour appearance model, CIECAM16, are presented, as is additional information about the use of the model in practical applications. The publication is written in English, with a short summary in French and German. It consists of 38 pages with 6 figures and is readily available from the CIE Webshop or from the National Committees of the CIE.
