Abstract:
This chapter discusses the laws governing the evolution of the scale factor as well as Hubble’s law, which is historically the first observational signature of cosmic expansion. Hubble’s law relates two measurable quantities, the redshift and the luminosity distance of a galaxy. The chapter also introduces the Weyl postulate (1923), which stipulates that the ‘cosmological fluid’ consisting of galaxies, quasars, and so on, visible or invisible, follows such geodesics. It then presents the Friedmann–Lemaître equations. Finally, the chapter discusses the first models of the universe, from 1917–60: the static Einstein model and the de Sitter and steady state models.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the neuroscience of compassion and related social emotions such as empathy, empathic concern, or empathic distress. First, we review neuroscientific literature on empathy and relate empathy to similar social emotions. We then turn to neuroscientific research on caregiving and social connection before describing cross-sectional studies on the neural signatures of compassion. To investigate whether training of compassion can change neural functions, the neural “fingerprints” of compassion expertise were studied in both expert and inexperienced meditators. The latter included the comparison between functional plasticity induced by empathy for suffering as opposed to compassion training. These studies show that compassion training changes neural functions, and that the neural substrates related to empathy for suffering differ experientially as well as neuronally. This is in line with the observation of distinct behavioral patterns related to feelings of empathic distress and compassion, described towards the end of the chapter.

Abstract:
At the end of President Barack Obama’s second term, it appeared that the United States and Cuba might be on track to normalize relations after five decades of Cold War animus. These hopes seemed dashed by the results of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, which brought to power a candidate that made clear his desire to undo Obama’s signature policies. Drawing insight from the political, economic, and legal spheres, The Cuba-U.S. Bilateral Relationship: New Pathways and Policy Choices examines possible ways forward for the two former Cold War adversaries. Topping the list of issues that requiring attention include outstanding property claims, now worth over $8 billion, that date back to the 1959 Revolution, establishing U.S.-Cuban economic relationships in multiple sectors of the economy, and an array of contentious political issues in both Cuba and the United States. This volume addresses these issues by raising challenging policy questions, providing thought-provoking observations, offering insightful commentary, and positing viable policy choices across a range of political, legal, and economic issues.

Webb, Heather. Dante, Artist of Gesture. Oxford University PressOxford, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192866998.001.0001.

Abstract:
Abstract Dante, Artist of Gesture proposes a visual technique for reading Dante’s Commedia, as if the striking gestural images that it imprints on the reader’s mind were arranged in an architectural space. Art historians have shown how series of discrete images or scenes in medieval places of worship, such as the programme of mosaics in the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence or the programme of frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, establish not only narrative sequences but also typological parallelisms between registers, forging links between those registers by the use of colour and gestural forms. This book takes up those techniques to show that the Commedia likewise invites the reader to make visual links between disparate, non-sequential moments in the text. In other words, Dante’s poem asks readers to view its verbally articulated sequences of images with a set of observational tools that could be acquired from the practice of engaging with and meditating on the bodily depictions of vice and virtue in fresco cycles or programmes of mosaics in places of worship. One of the most inherently visible aspects of the Commedia is the representation of signature gestures of the characters described in each of the realms. The tracing of described gestures and bodily signs across the canticles of the poem provides a key for identifying affective and devotional itineraries within the text.
