Carta, Silvio. "Documentary film, observational style and postmodern anthopology in Sardinia : a visual anthropology." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2012. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/3674/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores issues of technique, methodology and style in ethnographic/documentary films, with a focus on Sardinia. How are cultural realities constructed in documentary and ethnographic films? In what ways do practical filmmaking strategies reflect wider epistemological questions and ethical concerns? The thesis examines the general stylistic principles that have guided the making of a substantial body of documentary films about Sardinia. Attention has been paid to a range of different methods used by a select number of documentary and ethnographic filmmakers, covering important theoretical points on the distinctive set of technical, aesthetic and ethical problems embodied in the epistemology of their filmmaking practice. The study concludes that scholars should look for a more balanced fusion between film as a multisensory medium of ideas and forms of ethnographic enquiry conducted through language. The nonverbal elements and visual imagery in ethnographic/documentary films suggest obliquely that a kind of knowledge expressed in the concrete case requires an acknowledgment of domains of experience that often elude written expression.

Abstract:
There is a moment in Edward Yang’s acclaimed film Yi Yi (2000) in which a young boy in a conversation with his father observes that he cannot see what his father sees and that his father cannot see what he sees, prompting two questions: “How can I know what you see?” and “Can we only know half of the truth?” Unable to provide adequate answers, his father instead offers his son a camera. Later in the film, the same boy presents his uncle with a picture he took of the back of his head. When asked why, the boy responds by saying, “You cannot see it yourself, so I’m helping you.” These two scenes in Yang’s film illustrate the spirit of the questions that guide the aesthetic approach I have taken in my own documentary project. My thesis is composed of two parts: a video project and a research paper, the former of which is a documentary entitled Yi. Named after its primary subject, the film explores the intersections of transnational migrancy and cultural identity through a series of interviews that are intercut with scenes of everyday life that are shot in an observational style. The research paper that follows will situate the project within a specific historical, conceptual, and aesthetic context, before delineating how the cinematic composition of my documentary engages with this framework.

Sharp, Laura L. "AUDIENCE RESPONSE TO THE NATURE/SOCIETY BINARY IN KUROSAWA’S DERSU UZALA: AN OBSERVATIONAL ONLINE ETHNOGRAPHY." UKnowledge, 2013. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/geography_etds/8.

Abstract:
Geographers researching cinema have predominantly been interested in how geographic meaning is constructed and negotiated within film, but have been less productive in accounting for how these constructs are received by viewers. Using the method of observational online ethnography, I therefore investigate how fans in online reviews have interpreted the nature/society binary in the film Dersu Uzala. Working from a social constructionist view of nature I begin by deconstructing the binary as it appears in Dersu Uzala before proceeding to illustrate the way this constitutive absence is made up for by the visuality of the film’s landscapes and techniques of geographic realism. Turning to the fan reviews I find that, rather than challenge the historical and constructed division between nature and society, many fans accept the binary as inevitable and consistent with their ideas about contemporary reality. More than passive consumption however, this concurrence is actively rearticulated in the ways that the fans incorporate the binary into their own lives and in the new discursive practices of the internet. In so doing I make headway into the exploration of audience analysis by geographers and continue to advance geography’s foray into cultures of the internet.

Abstract:
This research is a small part of a bigger field of research made before by other authorsregarding the humans in the urban public space. It has a small context compared to otherstudies, but a big impact inside the community. It aims at finding answers to questions thatother researchers asked before, but under different circumstances and they displayed them through different ways such as documentary films (The social life of small urban spaces 1980, How to live in a city 1964).After experiencing the city life of Malmö and some questions have been raised, the concept of resilience intersected with the interest of social public life in a neighbourhood. In order to have the theoretical framework to answer the research question, the thesis follows a literature review, where the concepts of resilience, urban resilience, resilient urban design and social resilience have been explored.Next, after exploring the city of Malmö, some case studies have been chosen and studiedthrough direct observation in different months starting with March and various times of theday. In the methodological approach section the methods are explained as well as a detailed presentation of the biggest tool used for this research: observational drawing. The tools used for the observation are field notes, observational drawings and photographs. The cases are spread throughout the city and are located in neighbourhoods with different urban tissues. The results reveal all the observational drawings made during the field visits and the field notes written. They show how people use the spaces in all three case studies depending on the weather or other external factors. The discussion reveals the complexity of the relation between concepts and the empiricaldata, following the initial aim of the research throughout the discussion. This thesiscontributes with important outcomes to the field of urban studies creating awareness about the urban context and its influence on people. The findings of this study show a diversity and creativity of users in using the public space.

Abstract:
The film is about a newly arrived Japanese student's initial period of adjustment at the University of North Texas. This observational documentary film follows the student and witnesses the student's first reactions to various social environments. The purpose of this creative thesis project was to depict the difficulties that international students encounter at the beginning of their stay in America. The initial goal of the video was to provide useful visual research material to people who are interested in the acculturation of foreign students. Because of its realistic character, the video can give its audiences a more immediate and vivid picture of foreign students than existing written literature. By giving an authentic portrait of the students' hardship and adjustments, the ultimate goal of this video was to increase the American people's appreciation of the difficulties encountered by foreign students who come to this country equipped with limited social assistance and resources. An accompanying production report describes the research process, the pre-production, production, and post-production stages.

Abstract:
This thesis is articulated around two main axis : a theoretical approach of the notion of the rhythm and a study of the rhythmic structures of two films of the brazilian director leon hirszman, sao bernardo and a falecida (the deceased). The first axis aims to define rhythm in a general way and, more particularly, the rhythm of films through the examination of different theoretical approaches of this notion. The second axis, studies the rhythmic system that presides the dynamic organisation of the chosen films. It includes two sections : in the first one, the films are placed in their textual field. This permits the observation of the relations established between the film's texts and its contexts, as well as some of the resulting transtextual and intertextual relations. The second step focuses on the identifying the part taken by the major rhythmic structures in each film. The aim is to observe the role of rhythm in the metadiscursive functioning of the film. The rhythm is used as a communicative strategy in the enunciation system of the film. This is particularly the case of sao bernardo, which has been conceived as an <> in the sense given by christian metz. This means a film able to subvert the spectator's imaginary process, in order to transmit the <> hidden behind the diegetic plot leading to fictionalisation. In this thesis, we wanted to put together a reflection about the rhythmic phenomenon in the cinematographic field, and an approach to the work of the rhythmic structures in a film with a particular observation of the rhythmic weft of our choice of films by leon hirszman. This study sets down the premises for a broader analysis, which should point out the factors of a rhythmic intertextuality in a group of films of one filmmaker. We think that rhythm more than just a manifestation of the subject of the enunciation, is also an author's trail. It is a stylistic sign, that can bring out interesting data through a comparative analysis of the films that constitute an author's work

Abstract:

Abstract:

The home built Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE) microscope was implemented to probe the magnetic domain patterns of thin film samples. A CCD camera is introduced to the existing MOKE rotation measurement setup. The images captured by the camera are used to analyze the change in the magnetic domain patterns by the Kerr effect. Using 6.5× zoom lens and 1.33× extension tube attached to the CCD camera, the size of the sample down to a 1.02mm by 0.75 mm area can be viewed in the image capture. Magnetic hysteresis loop is first measured to investigate the magnetic switching behavior and measure the coercivity. Domain images that exhibited the most significant change were mostly captured between magnetic remanence and near coercivity. The images of samarium cobalt thin film at or near magnetic coercivity showed the changes in shape and light intensity of the magnetic domain light patterns due to the Kerr rotation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Machine learning is increasingly involved in both our production and consumption of video. One symptom of this is the appearance of automated video editing applications. As this technology spreads rapidly to consumers, the need for substantive research about its social impact grows. To this end, this project maintains a focus on video editing as a microcosm of larger shifts in cultural objects co-authored by artificial intelligence. The window in which this research occurred (2010-2015) saw machine learning move increasingly into the public eye, and with it ethical concerns. What follows is, on the most abstract level, a discussion of why these ethical concerns are particularly urgent in the realm of the moving image. Algorithmic editing consists of software instructions to automate the creation of timelines of moving images. The criteria that this software uses to query a database is variable. Algorithmic authorship already exists in other media, but I will argue that the moving image is a separate case insofar as the raw material of text and music software can develop on its own. The performance of a trained actor can still not be generated by software. Thus, my focus is on the relationship between live embodied performance, and the subsequent algorithmic editing of that footage. This is a process that can employ other software like computer vision (to analyze the content of video) and predictive analytics (to guess what kind of automated film to make for a given user). How is performance altered when it has to communicate to human and non-human alike? The ritual of the iterative frame gives literal form to something that throughout human history has been a projection: the omniscient participant observer, more commonly known as the Divine. We experience black boxed software (AI's, specifically neural networks, which are intrinsically opaque) as functionally omniscient and tacitly allow it to edit more and more of life (e.g. filtering articles, playlists and even potential spouses). As long as it remains disembodied, we will continue to project the Divine on to the black box, causing cultural anxiety. In other words, predictive analytics alienate us from the source code of our cultural texts. The iterative frame then is a space in which these forces can be inscribed on the body, and hence narrated. The algorithmic editing of content is already taken for granted. The editing of moving images, in contrast, still requires a human hand. We need to understand the social power of moving image editing before it is delegated to automation. Practice Section: This project is practice-led, meaning that the portfolio of work was produced as it was being theorized. To underscore this, the portfolio comes at the end of the document. Video editors use artificial intelligence (AI) in a number of different applications, from deciding the sequencing of timelines to using facial and language detection to find actors in archives. This changes traditional production workflows on a number of levels. How can the single decision cut a between two frames of video speak to the larger epistemological shifts brought on by predictive analytics and Big Data (upon which they rely)? When predictive analytics begin modeling the world of moving images, how will our own understanding of the world change? In the practice-based section of this thesis, I explore how these shifts will change the way in which actors might approach performance. What does a gesture mean to AI and how will the editor decontextualize it? The set of a video shoot that will employ an element of AI in editing represents a move towards ritualization of production, summarized in the term the 'iterative frame'. The portfolio contains eight works that treat the set was taken as a microcosm of larger shifts in the production of culture. There is, I argue, metaphorical significance in the changing understanding of terms like 'continuity' and 'sync' on the AI-watched set. Theory Section In the theoretical section, the approach is broadly comparative. I contextualize the current dynamic by looking at previous shifts in technology that changed the relationship between production and post-production, notably the lightweight recording technology of the 1960s. This section also draws on debates in ethnographic filmmaking about the matching of film and ritual. In this body of literature, there is a focus on how participant observation can be formalized in film. Triangulating between event, participant observer and edit grammar in ethnographic filmmaking provides a useful analogy in understanding how AI as film editor might function in relation to contemporary production. Rituals occur in a frame that is dependent on a spatially/temporally separate observer. This dynamic also exists on sets bound for post-production involving AI, The convergence of film grammar and ritual grammar occurred in the 1960s under the banner of cinéma vérité in which the relationship between participant observer/ethnographer and the subject became most transparent. In Rouch and Morin's Chronicle of a Summer (1961), reflexivity became ritualized in the form of on-screen feedback sessions. The edit became transparent-the black box of cinema disappeared. Today as artificial intelligence enters the film production process this relationship begins to reverse-feedback, while it exists, becomes less transparent. The weight of the feedback ritual gets gradually shifted from presence and production to montage and post-production. Put differently, in cinéma vérité, the participant observer was most present in the frame. As participant observation gradually becomes shared with code it becomes more difficult to give it an embodied representation and thus its presence is felt more in the edit of the film. The relationship between the ritual actor and the participant observer (the algorithm) is completely mediated by the edit, a reassertion of the black box, where once it had been transparent. The crucible for looking at the relationship between algorithmic editing, participant observation and the black box is the subject in trance. In ritual trance the individual is subsumed by collective codes. Long before the advent of automated editing trance was an epistemological problem posed to film editing. In the iterative frame, for the first time, film grammar can echo ritual grammar and indeed become continuous with it. This occurs through removing the act of cutting from the causal world, and projecting this logic of post-production onto performance. Why does this occur? Ritual and specifically ritual trance is the moment when a culture gives embodied form to what it could not otherwise articulate. The trance of predictive analytics-the AI that increasingly choreographs our relationship to information-is the ineffable that finds form in the iterative frame. In the iterative frame a gesture never exists in a single instance, but in a potential state. The performers in this frame begin to understand themselves in terms of how automated indexing processes reconfigure their performance. To the extent that gestures are complicit with this mode of databasing they can be seen as votive toward the algorithmic. The practice section focuses on the poetics of this position. Chapter One focuses on cinéma vérité as a moment in which the relationship between production and post-production shifted as a function of more agile recording technology, allowing the participant observer to enter the frame. This shift becomes a lens to look at changes that AI might bring. Chapter Two treats the work of Pierre Huyghe as a 'liminal phase' in which a new relationship between production and post-production is explored. Finally, Chapter Three looks at a film in which actors perform with awareness that footage will be processed by an algorithmic edit.
The conclusion looks at the implications this way of relating to AI-especially commercial AI-through embodied performance could foster a more critical relationship to the proliferating black-boxed modes of production.

Abstract:
To observe in situ the damaging of metallic thin films on polymeric substrates, an atomic force microscope have been interfaced with an uniaxial mechanical testing machine. For films under compressive stresses, stability of the different observed buckled structures (straight-sided blisters, wormlike or varicose pattern) have been studied as a function of the stresses in the film. Distribution of the stresses in a blister has also been analysed by X-ray micro-diffraction and finite elements calculations. Successive cracking mecanism of a coated material under increasing tensile stresses have been characterized and analysed with the help of finite elements. Cracking of the polymeric substrate induced by the cracking of the metallic film has been underlined. The effect of ion beam assistance has been studied : the improvement of the film/substrate adhesion is accompanied by the weakening of the resistance to cracking of the coated material

Abstract:
A large part of the results reported in this thesis is based on an observation which has never been made for wireless communications and power control in particular: transmit power levels and more generally transmit covariance matrices can be exploited to embed information such as coordination information and available interference-dependent feedback samples can be exploited as a communication channel. First, we show that the famous iterative water-filling algorithm does not exploit the available information sufficiently well in terms of sum-utility. Indeed, we show that global channel state information can be acquired from the sole knowledge of an SINR-type feedback. A natural question then arises. Is it possible to design a distributed power control algorithm which exploits as well as possible the available information? To answer this question, we derive the characterization of the utility region for the considered problem and show how to exploit this characterization not only to measure globally efficiency but also to obtain globally efficient one-shot power control functions. Motivated by the success of our approach for single-band and multi-band interference networks, we asked ourselves whether it could be exploited for MIMO networks. We have identified at least one very relevant scenario. Indeed, we show that opportunistic interference alignment can be implemented by only assuming interference-plus-noise covariance feedback at the secondary transmitter. Then, in the last chapter, we generalize the problem of quantization, the motivation for this being given by some observations made in the previous chapters. First, we assume that the quantizer and de-quantizer are designed to maximize a general utility function instead of the conventional distortion function. Second, we assume that the quantizer and de-quantizer may have different utility functions. This raises non-trivial technical problems, our claim is to make a very first step into solving them

This thesis studies the nuts and bolts of the filming of a feature film through the interactions of the people working on the set in the particular context of Israeli cinema. My thesis follows the works of sociologists of the broader interactionist school of thought such as Howard Becker or Erving Goffman. The thesis is based on several months of fieldwork as a participant observer on the film set of a contemporary Israeli feature film filmed mostly in Jerusalem as well as thirty interviews which bring an unprecedented overview of the way films are made in the country. Principal photography is the stage of intense collective action during which different agents interact together in a creative process. Thus, the film set is at the center of rich and particular social interactions. By analyzing those interactions, one can uncover their influence on the making of the film. The thesis also demonstrates the peculiarities of filming a feature film in a city, Jerusalem, where religion and the geopolitical context affect the codified organization of the film set

Abstract:
This research deals with multi-filaments glass yarns used as reinforcement of cement based materials. It focuses on the mechanical interactions of these yarns, made of thousands of micrometric filaments, with a micro-concrete and on the specific part of the impregnation of the yarn by the cementitious matrix. Modulated impregnation conditions of the yarns were obtained by using three different manufacturing processes for the samples preparation. The impregnation of 5 multi-filament yarns by the cementitious matrix has been characterized and physical parameters of impregnation were determined using SEM investigations, mercury intrusion porosity measurements and specific tests of flow all along the embedded yarn. Classical pull-out tests have been used for the mechanical characterisation. The study of the links between the mechanical properties and the physical parameters of impregnation allowed accessing a better understanding of the filaments / cementitious matrix interaction micro-mechanisms, and explaining the macroscopic pull-out behaviour

Abstract:
In the last decade, the industry of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) has gone through immense growth and diversification. Nowadays, we find drone based applications in a wide range of industries, such as infrastructure, agriculture, transport, among others. This phenomenon has generated an increasing interest in the field of aerial manipulation. The implementation of aerial manipulators in the UAV industry could generate a significant increase in possible applications. However, the restriction on available payload is one of the main setbacks of this approach. The impossibility to equip UAVs with heavy dexterous industrial robotic arms has driven the interest in the development of lightweight manipulators suitable for these applications. In the pursuit of providing an alternative lightweight solution for the aerial manipulators, this thesis proposes a lightweight robotic arm actuated by Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wires. Although SMA wires represent a great alternative to conventional actuators for lightweight applications, they also imply highly nonlinear dynamics, which makes them difficult to control. Seeking to present a solution for the challenging task of controlling SMA wires, this work investigates the implications and advantages of the implementation of state feedback control techniques. The final aim of this study is the experimental implementation of a state feedback control for position regulation of the proposed lightweight robotic arm. Firstly, a mathematical model based on a constitutive model of the SMA wire is developed and experimentally validated. This model describes the dynamics of the proposed lightweight robotic arm from a mechatronics perspective. The proposed robotic arm is tested with three output feedback controllers for angular position control, namely a PID, a Sliding Mode and an Adaptive Controller. The controllers are tested in a MATLAB simulation and finally implemented and experimentally tested in various different scenarios. Following, in order to perform the experimental implementation of a state feedback control technique, a state and unknown input observer is developed. First, a non-switching observable model with unknown input of the proposed robotic arm is derived from the model previously presented. This model takes the martensite fraction rate of the original model as an unknown input, making it possible to eliminate the switching terms in the model. Then, a state and unknown input observer is proposed. This observer is based on the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) for state estimation and sliding mode approach for unknown input estimation. Sufficient conditions for stability and convergence are established. The observer is tested in a MATLAB simulation and experimentally validated in various different scenarios. Finally, a state feedback control technique is tested in simulation and experimentally implemented for angular position control of the proposed lightweight robotic arm. Specifically, continuous and discrete-time State-Dependent Riccati Equation (SDRE) control laws are derived and implemented. To conclude, a quantitative and qualitative comparative analysis between an output feedback control approach and the implemented state feedback control is carried out under multiple scenarios, including position regulation, position tracking and tracking with changing payloads

Abstract:
Experimental psychologists use terms referring to mind for explaining their results. However, in the course of history, they have defined the concept of mind in many ways and so the meaning of the terms used in its theories. In the first part of this work four epistemological options according to which these terms have been interpreted all along the history of experimental psychology are discussed (the ‘mentalism’ of introspectionism, the ‘anti-mentalism’ of behaviourism, the ‘mentalism’ of cognitivism, the ‘anti-mentalism’ of cognitive neuroscience). Assuming one of these options implies to consider different kinds of data and so to choose different data collecting and analyzing methodologies. In the second part the experiments proposed by neurologist Damasio for testing his ‘somatic marker hypothesis’ are replicated. Such experiments are interesting because they appeal to data and methodologies referring to all the four epistemological options above considered. The results presented do not replicate the Damasio’s ones and so they seem to falsify his hypothesis. The epistemological analysis and the empirical research show how the introspectionistic-mentalistic option (refused by Damasio in favour of the neuroscientific option) deserve to be considered as a reliable methodological that can lead to important scientific results.

In 2003 I made a documentary film called Karoo Kitaar Blues with South African songwriter and guitarist, David Kramer, on the rare musicians, music, and instruments of scattered coloured communities in the Northern Cape. When I set out, seven years ago, to make the film I had no intention of making an ethnographic film or producing a visual ethnography in the anthropological sense (I am a documentary filmmaker), but two academic reviews, critical of its lack of ‘ethnographic context’ caught my intention. This dissertation attempts to respond to their critique. I explore the territory of visual anthropology and ethnographic methodology in order to understand why my film, with hindsight, is and is not ‘ethnographic’, and to establish how ethnographic practice could enhance my work as a filmmaker. I use Karoo Kitaar Blues as my visual monograph and examine the differences between ethnographic film and documentary (in the observational mode) with reference to ethnographic methodologies and theory in ethnomusicology, and consider how film can be used ‘as’ ethnography or ‘in’ ethnography. I conclude that Karoo Kitaar Blues film lies somewhere between ethnographic and observational filmmaking.

Abstract:
This exegesis offers an understanding of the practical PhD which led to the creation of the feature documentary film Waking with Martyrs, a film which follows an Iranian-Australian filmmaker’s journey into war sites of Iran. On the one hand, this study situates the personal, social, political and historical context which led to the construction of the journey and the film. While it examines the personal reasons for which the filmmaker embarked on the journey, it situates Iranian war sites as new sites of pilgrimages and highlights its political and social significance in Iran. It highlights the importance of these war pilgrimages within a religious and political landscape, not only arguing for their political importance in Iran, but also for their significance in defining parts of Iranian identity. The study examines how the journey offers insight into one of Iran’s least understood pro-government groups who embark on such kinds of journeys. It further examines the way the film could be seen as an agent of shifting perspectives and changes, not only for the filmmaker, but also for the subjects in the film, and the viewing audiences. On the other hand, this study situates the film through theories of documentary, examining in detail the processes, which led to the particular creation of the film. It examines the film within the larger scope of diasporic Iranian filmic landscape about the war and argues how this film could be seen as contributing to a new understanding of the situation within Iran.

Abstract Magnetoresistance of ferromagnetic samples varies when the intensity or direction of an external magnetic field is changed. The main ferromagnetic materials are CoNi and FeNi alloys, and they are widely uesd in magnetic sensor applications. In this thesis we focused on the FeNi alloy, and used thermal evaporation method to manufacture a series of thin film samples of Fe20Ni80 alloy. Next, we analyzed various properties of this thin film sample. From the magneto-electrical resistivity experiment, we found that the magnetoresistance and planar Hall-effect properties are functions of the external magnetic DC field. By applying an external magnetic AC field, we did the magnetoresistive measurements. From the domain observation experiment, we observed domain walls movement by employing the ferrofluid water solution. The main interst in this thesis is to discuss the relationship between domain wall movements and the various magneto-electrical properties.

The advantages of fuel injection system can offer more accruate and prompt fuel amount then that of carburetor. However, when the engine is operated under the transient operation condition, the wall wetting effect will influence the in-cylinder air fuel ratio. The wrong air fuel ratio will cause higher exhaust emissions and worse driveability. So, this paper will investigate the fuel dynamics in engine. The observation of spray pattern is performed in free and limited space. Then the fuel film dynamic model is used to correct the transient fueling step and simulate the in-cylinder air fuel ratio. The deposit factor and boiling time constant is determined by means of step change of fuel injection and measuring the exhaust gas air fuel ratio. The experimental result shows that choose the injector with proper spray pattern, and then aim at the inlet valve will reduce the wall wetting. The engine speed have important influence on parameter of fuel film dynamic model. and decreases with increasing engine speed, but weakly dependent upon injected fuel amount and throttle position.

The data of star observation is huge and increase continuously. Therefore it needs strong hardware to store these data. If these data lacks of a efficiently manage methodology, users will need to find and get data themselves, it’s not a good and efficient way. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a hierarchical design distributed file system to manage these astronomical observation data. First, this system uses Hierarchical Triangular Mesh to compute a key for every star, the values of these keys are sequential, so this paper links the servers in the system to form a ring structure, and let every server manages an unrepeated range of keys, range that every two adjacent servers manage are also continuous. Besides, The reason why adopting ring structure is due to its scalability, fault tolerance and availability, these advantages build the good foundation of the system. For increase the efficiency of query, the system needs execute multiple services. To reduce the load of servers, this paper builds three level of the ring structure and allocates these services to different layer. These layers are 1. Query Transaction, 2. Data index, 3. Storage. This design not only reduces the load, but also makes these services independent.

Haschenburger, Judith Kay. "Scour and fill in a gravel-bed channel : observations and stochastic models." Thesis, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/4843.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates channel bed scour and fill as a result of individual flood events in a gravel-bed channel. Given the complexity of interactions between hydraulic force, the texture and arrangement of bed material, and input of sediment to a particular point of the channel bed, study objectives were pursued with the view that bed material movement is a stochastic phenomenon. A two-year field program was conducted in Carnation Creek, a small gravel-bed stream draining 11 km2 on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. In the 900 m study reach, an array of measurement techniques, including scour indicators, magnetically-tagged stones, and conventional survey, yielded information about the fluctuations of the channel bed elevation and movement of scoured material for individual flooding periods. Frequency distributions of scour and fill depths associated with individual flooding periods are adequately modeled by negative exponential functions over the range of flood peak magnitudes observed in Carnation Creek. Analysis of scour depths measured in streams on the Queen Charlotte Islands demonstrates the applicability of the exponential model to flooding periods and flood seasons. Further, exploratory analysis suggests that a regional scour depth model is possible. Power functions relating mean depths of scour and fill to flood peak discharge show that depth increases with an increase in peak magnitude. Observed maximum scour depths in flooding periods are linked, in general, to streambed conditions influenced by antecedent flow conditions. These patterns in scour and fill exist within an overall pattern of increasing variability in depths of scour and fill as peak discharge increases. Evaluation of a heuristic model for mean travel distance as a function of particle size proposed by Church and Hassan (1992) provides convincing evidence for its general merit. Mean travel distance decreases inversely with particle size as size increases beyond the median diameter of subsurface sediment. This trend is consistent in both individual flooding periods as well as flood seasons. The majority of material finer than the median diameter of surface sediment is supplied from subsurface material, which influences the travel distances of these finer fractions because of burial. Computation of volumetric transport rates of bed material, based on the active scour depth and width of the channel bed, the virtual velocity of particle movement, and sediment porosity, suggests the potential for building scale correlations with streamflow, which have usually been defined by bedload sampling during floods. Error analysis indicates that determination of active width contributes most significantly to the imprecision of transport rate estimates. Results underscore the stochastic nature of sediment transport in gravel-bed channels.

In this thesis, an electrochemical discharge machining transmission microscope, which composed of an transmission microscope, electrochemical discharge machining system, and image analysis system, was proposed for observing the formations of bubbles and the gas film during the machining. The mechanisms and relationships of the bubbles and the gas film evolution between their status and current signals need to be further investigated. An experimental setup with a conical/columnar electrode was constructed for the observations when there were with/without samples. Furthermore, a photograph of 10,000 shots per second by a high speed camera was taken to observe the status of the bubble and the the gas film evolution. As the result of the experimental, it showed that the bubbles and the gas film evolution was highly correlated with current signals. In the case of a columnar electrode, the largest volume was 3-17 seconds slower than the volume at the moment of the largest current. In the case of a conical electrode, the largest volume was 3-13 seconds slower than the volume at the moment of the largest current. Besides, the gas film of conical electrode was stable more fast than the columnar electrode, and the condition without quartz glass became stable more fast than the condition with quartz glass. From the images we got, it could be observed that of gas film broken and discharged was also observed, then the gas bubble was simultaneously produced to repair the defective gas film. In this thesis, the microscopic observation system we mentioned was described first, and then we discussed the the bubbles and the gas film evolution with the microscopic observation system we mentioned. Finally, the results of the observation were discussed, and then the conclusions and future prospects were presented.

Many past researches have reported results on FM/FM layer exchange coupling systems. However, further discussion on the intensity of magnetic anisotropy differences in Fe film magnetic coupling is of interest. In this study we set up a Magneto-optic Kerr effect system. Further improvements were made to the sensitivity. CoFe/NiFe with a quasi-spin valve structure were measured as a FM/FM film layer model system ,and discuss effects of temperature and magnetic field rate changes to magnetization reversal are discussed. We examine the scaling behavior of magnetic dynamics and how this model corresponds to the results. Scaling parameters obtained from experimental results are compared with related references.
