Full textThis thesis proposes the analysis of the Consueta antiga from the Cathedral of Mallorca, a medieval obituary which stipulated anniversaries to be held in the cathedral throughout the year, as an historical and artistic source of Mallorca cathedral. From the full transcript of the codex and the analysis of its accounting records may propose new hypotheses about the construction process of the cathedral, basing these processes with other architectural precedents observed in the Iberian Península. By way of introduction, the firsts chapters refers initially a contextualization of the obituary in a European view of that type of obituary sources. A second section of the chapter wants to propose the collection of obituaries of the Iberian Peninsula that have been published and used in the field of art history. Ending in the most particular geographical area, a current knowledge of the obituary sources the Balearic Islands is exposed. After this state of affairs, we present a brief codicological analysis of the document, as the preceding calendar as anniversaries obituary records. It is followed by a reference to movable property chapter that appear in the document, among which include the promotion of Canon Mir altarpiece of Sant Guillem and the donation of the relic of Jesus Christ shirt authenticated by the imperial Golden Bull Manuel II Palaeologus. The following chapters develop the specific topography of the cathedral in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth century, with the location of their altars and the genesis of the West courtyard of the cathedral, called cloister. In addition, special emphasis is given to the nature of the steeple of the cathedral and its different orientation with respect to the rest of the building, hypotheses from which we can propose a possible location and orientation of the mosque of the Islamic city of Madîna Mayûrqa. Finally, the last chapter proposes a series of doubts about the changing architectural plan of the Mallorcan Cathedral from one to three naves.

Full textThis paper discusses the obituary as a specific genre within the larger universe of contemporary biographical space, comparing it with similar genera in terms of functions and forms throughout history. This paper also scrutinizes its textual specificities in the present time, in order to comprehend the reasons for its rise in the twentieth century. As a mortuary biographical narrative, the obituary has migrated, mostly in the last thirty years, from newspapers and magazines to volumes in collection. This paper tries to understand why it happened. Obituaries are full of biographical values dear to contemporary readers, ruled by a regime of truth (the press) and the pathos of specific discourses related to recent death. Their study may allow us to sketch a cultural history of a genre that reflects current anxieties.

Full textThis thesis analyses press obituaries from a discourse analysis perspective and with a cross-disciplinary approach combining text linguistics, enunciation and argumentation theory. The analysis is based on a corpus of approximately 500 obituaries from all forms of contemporary French print media. It aims to demonstrate that obituaries are one of the modern forms of funeral rite in Western culture. To that end, it is divided in two parts: the first one shows that obituaries belong to a highly ritualised speech genre in all its dimensions (mediatic, compositional, pragmatic and enunciative). This routine form of expression is essential to the full performance of the rite: the order of speech restructures the chaos resulting from death. The study then questions the purpose of obituaries as a ritual: why write about someone who just died? It argues that this form of writing, characterised by its epideictic function, is a manifestation of the departed’s presence, beyond death, through their evocation or even summoning in speech. It asserts common values shared by the obituarist, the newspaper's editors, the deceased person and the readers. This work seeks to bring into light how linguistic markers (enunciative effacement, represented discourse, address form, staging of emotion, use of hyperstructure) indicate that obituaries are a way of reconstructing the cohesion of a community of values endangered by the death of one of its prominent members

This study began in the discussion, based on Bakhtin (2003), Marcuschi (2005) and Bronckart (2003), about the terminology regarding the genres, expanding the question towards the genre newspaper cover, culminating, finally, in the focus of this research, the newspaper headline, in a compositional approach to the structure and discursive stylistic - our main goal - so we could move towards the specific objectives to expand and document the Portuguese research at the printed newspaper in Paraíba (on the raising of a corpus of 15 obituary themed headlines, published in the journal A União in the period related to the twentieth century to the present day), analyze the same corpus in graphic-compositional and stylistic aspects (in this discursive perspective) and watch – and register – changes that have occurred in this genre, as well as stays in order to verify whether the journalistic headline gender is a discursive tradition, pointing to confirm this hypothesis, given the verified stays under a diachronic perspective. The graphic-compositional analysis of the corpus is guided primarily by the theories of Gradim (2000) and Pellim (2009), while the stylistic analysis, as regards the persona management theory is based on Coupland (2001), as the stylization with the use of anaphora and “catáfora” in Kock (1991) and, about the management with the headlines in the case of the death theme, basically, this study is guided by Freud (2009), Cross (2008) Amaral (2007) and Timothy (2010).

Full textHow did the scriptural changes contribute to the re-definition the necrological documents in the late Middle Ages and their adaptation to new challenges, so as to allow the performance of their function: ensuring the salvation of the soul of the dead ? The corpus of the diocese of Strasbourg reveals that beyond appearances of tradition, necrological documents diversified, a clearer differentiation between liturgical and administrative manuscripts emerged. Within the more complex documentary network of the memoria, they played a role in the normalisation and rationalisation of liturgical and administrative practices, especially from the fifteenth century onwards. While meeting with the internal needs of religious institutions, they also participated in the reform of the Church and built an anthropological community of the living and the dead

Full textIbn Iyās was a historian straddling mamluk and Ottoman era. This work concerns at the same time the study of the method of Ibn Iyās in the organization and the production of its work Badāʼiʽ al-zuhūr fī waqāʼiʽ al-duhūr and on thematic analyses of contents focused on the economic and social data. The biographical approach of the first chapter insists in particular on the circle of friends in which the author evolved. The second chapter makes the point on the work as well as on the publishing of the chronicle through his organization in sections and volumes and from there to approach the question of the dating of the work. An inventory of the obituary and biographic notes by social category as well as the study of their contents and the method of Ibn Iyās are the object of the chapter 3, with a particular attention to poetic quotations accompanying such notices. Chapter 4 analyzes the facts relating to the social history and exceptional natural phenomena having attracted the attention of the author. Then the next chapter deals with economic issues, including the Nile floods and their impact on the economy, as well as monetary matters. In both chapters, the approach taken by Ibn Iyās holds attention. Chapter 6 discusses the sources used by the author and describes the process of text production. Three appendices on manuscripts, other works of Ibn Iyās and distributions made on the basis of the author expressions were used to conclude this work

Full textThe problem of this study is the lack of understanding of obituary proverbs among juvenile people at Palanca neighborhood. We proposed to carry out the present subordinate work by the topic "Bakongo Proverbs of Obituary Rituals: Data Collection, Study and Ditactic Application". We apply four types of techniques for the data collection and study of proverbs: data collection form, participant observation and interview. After the data collection work, we preceded the bilingual listing (kikongo-portuguese) of the proverbs, as well as the circumstance of its application (the study) in the three funeral ceremonies performed by bakongo: funeral and closing of obituary. We have identified ethnolinguistic problems within the study group throughout our investigation. We elaborate didactic proposal, analytical plan in order to overcome the identified linguistic problems and the deviations of the Portuguese European norm. Furthermore, this plan makes also reference to the causes of the origin of these very same problems. Concerning cultural problems, through the clarification given by our informants, we understand that they are cultural procedures and not problems practiced by bakongo throughout the rituals of obituary. Finally, according to our experience in Portuguese teaching and from Portuguese language programs and textbooks of primary education, we propose a pedagogical project named: PROBEA - Bakongo Proverbs: Teaching and Learning. This project is designed to train teachers and students who join the project.
