Abstract:
In 1962 John moved south to Johannesburg, but that bustling city held few attractions for him and he moved further south, to the cathedral city of Grahamstown. Grahamstown, with its nineteenth century Gothic cathedral, elegant Georgian buildings, and distinctive grandeur of Rhodes University, St Andrew's College and other buildings designed by Herbert Baker and his colleagues, suited John. He particularly enjoyed the academic, social, artistic and dramatic life of the community, where many older members of society were distinguished old-Africa hands. John thoroughly enjoyed Grahamstown where, in the partnership of Hoskins and English, he made his mark in the restoration and extension of many significant buildings. His addition to the Anglican chapel at Hog's Back is a masterpiece, as is his incorporation of the old fayade into the rebuilding and extension of the Magistrates' Court.

Abstract:
Australian newspapers in recent years have increased significantly the column space devoted to obituaries. The Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian, the Age, the West Australian, the Herald Sun, the Canberra Times, the Advertiser, and the Courier-Mail now publish them in dedicated sections, often allocating an entire page to the obituary art. Their popularity in Australia follows a pattern established during the 1980s in Britain and the United States. Australian practice has been influenced in particular by developments in British journalism, which has seen a phenomenon described by the Wall Street Journal as ‘an odd revival…the rebirth of long newspaper obituaries’.† In its first incarnation, the obituary can be traced to the newsbooks of England which appeared in the 1660s, during the Restoration. It flowered in the 18th century, in the first daily newspapers and magazines; it grew luxuriant, and sometimes ornate, in the 19th century; it became unfashionable and fell into some general neglect in the 20th. Then, with the appointment of reformist editors and, particularly in Britain, the publication of bigger newspapers by an industry no longer subjected to labour restraint, the obituary itself experienced restoration. Though the momentum of renewed practice has been of mutual rapidity on three continents, there are some significant variations in its application. The American product generally favours a style faithful to news-writing principles so far as timing and content are concerned and is frequently expansive when relating the details of surviving family and funeral arrangements. In Britain, the emphasis is more on creative composition and a recitation of anecdotes, with less of a sense of urgency about news value and a consequent accent on character sketch. Both models, in recent years, have displayed a propensity for explicit appraisal and an increasing willingness to publish obituaries of those who have undermined, rather than adorned, society. Newspapers in Australia, while adopting the obituary with apparent fervour, have found their delivery of the product restrained by a lack of resources. Obituary desks in this country are staffed by a solitary journalist-editor. This has resulted in a reliance, often to an unhealthy degree, on contributions by readers. The tone of this material, with its intimacy of address and excess in sentiment, sits uneasily when appearing on the same page as obituaries syndicated from overseas sources. Contemporary obituary publication in the United States has been subjected to some scholarly analysis in terms of gender balance, identification of cause of death, and the demographic mix of its subject selection. This thesis, by means of a six-month content analysis, addresses such questions for the first time in an Australian context. In addition, it examines issues of style, origin and authorship. It finds that cause of death is identified much less than is the case in American obituary practice, that women are significantly under-represented, and that editing is sometimes haphazard. Nevertheless, the accumulated body of evidence points resolutely to a remarkable reinvigoration of practice in Australia’s daily newspapers. The thesis, by discussing the views of specialists in the field of obituary publication, pursues mechanisms for sustaining the momentum and for improving the product.

Abstract:

Sawalmeh, Murad. "Ceremonial Arabic writing : a genre-based investigation of wedding invitation cards and obituary announcements in Jordanian society." Thesis, University of Huddersfield, 2015. http://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/28708/.

Full text
Abstract:
The objectives of this thesis are fourfold: First, I will offer a detailed analysis of rhetorically functional text component moves of the genres of Jordanian written wedding invitation cards and newspaper obituary announcements at the macro-structural level. Second, I will provide a comprehensive analysis of salient linguistic features that characterize the genres at the microlinguistic level. Third, I will find out how socio-cultural and religious beliefs and practices are reflected in the generic formulaic structure of these genres. Fourth, I will show how sociolinguistic variability and dynamics are evident in the genres. In order to explore the discourse of these genres, a move analysis was carried out upon a corpus of 500 wedding invitation cards, and another 500 newspaper obituary announcements. The analysis of macrostructural and micro-linguistic features is influenced by the work of Bhatia (1993) as it profitably illuminates the relationship between social practice and written discourse. The findings of the study are fivefold. First, the study demonstrates that eight and eleven communicative moves exist in wedding invitation cards and obituary announcements respectively. Each move performs a specific communicative function and contributes to the general communicative purpose of the entire genre. Second, the genre analysis indicates that the generic organisational structure of the genres is highly conventionalized and structured in terms of form, content, positioning and functional values, with some variations in frequency and order of moves. Third, the writers of Jordanian wedding invitations and obituary announcements use a number of linguistic resources the way they like to generate some special effects and express private and organisational intentions within the framework of culturally recognised purposes. Fourth, the generic structure of the genres uncovers many socio-cultural and religious messages about Jordanian society. Finally, the findings showed that, besides religion, other sociocultural factors such as family, gender, and socioeconomic status have massively impacted the way these genres are structured and interpreted. It is hoped that the results of this study will be of great help in further understanding the socio-cultural perceptions, attitudes and values that shape these two communicative events as well as aiding in efforts towards intercultural communication.

Norman, Nathaniel Don. "From a Record of Death to a Memory of Life: The Rise of the Biographical Obituary in The Gentleman's Magazine." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32008.

Full text
Abstract:
The need for an examination of the rise of various journalistic and print forms in The Gentleman's Magazine is evident from the absence of scholarship in this area. One of the most important forms born in The Gentleman's Magazine is the obituary. Beginning as a sparse list of deaths appended to the back of each issue of the magazine, it came to occupy a larger role in the publication within a hundred years of its inception. My study proposes to examine the reasons for this shift, focusing on the rise of the biographical form as it is treated in the works of Samuel Johnson, a prominent contributor to The Gentleman's Magazine, and practiced at the hands of John Nichols, one of the magazine's most prominent editors. My study also seeks to characterize the content of the obituaries by historicizing them in the context of the period and within the confines of the editorial policies of the magazine itself. The magazine's editorial persona, Sylvanus Urbanus, provides general terms whereby the dead may be characterized. Ultimately, my study is interested in examining the representations of the deceased in the obituary form as social markers, that are necessary for understanding how groups and individuals represented society.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes the analysis of the Consueta antiga from the Cathedral of Mallorca, a medieval obituary which stipulated anniversaries to be held in the cathedral throughout the year, as an historical and artistic source of Mallorca cathedral. From the full transcript of the codex and the analysis of its accounting records may propose new hypotheses about the construction process of the cathedral, basing these processes with other architectural precedents observed in the Iberian Península. By way of introduction, the firsts chapters refers initially a contextualization of the obituary in a European view of that type of obituary sources. A second section of the chapter wants to propose the collection of obituaries of the Iberian Peninsula that have been published and used in the field of art history. Ending in the most particular geographical area, a current knowledge of the obituary sources the Balearic Islands is exposed. After this state of affairs, we present a brief codicological analysis of the document, as the preceding calendar as anniversaries obituary records. It is followed by a reference to movable property chapter that appear in the document, among which include the promotion of Canon Mir altarpiece of Sant Guillem and the donation of the relic of Jesus Christ shirt authenticated by the imperial Golden Bull Manuel II Palaeologus. The following chapters develop the specific topography of the cathedral in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth century, with the location of their altars and the genesis of the West courtyard of the cathedral, called cloister. In addition, special emphasis is given to the nature of the steeple of the cathedral and its different orientation with respect to the rest of the building, hypotheses from which we can propose a possible location and orientation of the mosque of the Islamic city of Madîna Mayûrqa. Finally, the last chapter proposes a series of doubts about the changing architectural plan of the Mallorcan Cathedral from one to three naves.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis reviews the background, influences, and evolution of three works that form Posthumous, an exhibit by the thesis candidate. The thesis begins with a series of vignettes that relate a number of personal experiences involving death, and photography, which have influenced the conceptual development of the work. Chapters devoted to each piece follow the vignettes. These chapters refer to the various influences that have led to the development of the following works: Obit to Self: April 10, 2005, Posthumous, and Jay. These influences range from the movie Hotel Rwanda, to handbills for punk-rock shows. The thesis ends with a description of the exhibition at the Anderson Gallery.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the obituary as a specific genre within the larger universe of contemporary biographical space, comparing it with similar genera in terms of functions and forms throughout history. This paper also scrutinizes its textual specificities in the present time, in order to comprehend the reasons for its rise in the twentieth century. As a mortuary biographical narrative, the obituary has migrated, mostly in the last thirty years, from newspapers and magazines to volumes in collection. This paper tries to understand why it happened. Obituaries are full of biographical values dear to contemporary readers, ruled by a regime of truth (the press) and the pathos of specific discourses related to recent death. Their study may allow us to sketch a cultural history of a genre that reflects current anxieties.

Florea, Marie-Laure. Thesis, Lyon 2, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015LYO20122/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses press obituaries from a discourse analysis perspective and with a cross-disciplinary approach combining text linguistics, enunciation and argumentation theory. The analysis is based on a corpus of approximately 500 obituaries from all forms of contemporary French print media. It aims to demonstrate that obituaries are one of the modern forms of funeral rite in Western culture. To that end, it is divided in two parts: the first one shows that obituaries belong to a highly ritualised speech genre in all its dimensions (mediatic, compositional, pragmatic and enunciative). This routine form of expression is essential to the full performance of the rite: the order of speech restructures the chaos resulting from death. The study then questions the purpose of obituaries as a ritual: why write about someone who just died? It argues that this form of writing, characterised by its epideictic function, is a manifestation of the departed’s presence, beyond death, through their evocation or even summoning in speech. It asserts common values shared by the obituarist, the newspaper's editors, the deceased person and the readers. This work seeks to bring into light how linguistic markers (enunciative effacement, represented discourse, address form, staging of emotion, use of hyperstructure) indicate that obituaries are a way of reconstructing the cohesion of a community of values endangered by the death of one of its prominent members

This study began in the discussion, based on Bakhtin (2003), Marcuschi (2005) and Bronckart (2003), about the terminology regarding the genres, expanding the question towards the genre newspaper cover, culminating, finally, in the focus of this research, the newspaper headline, in a compositional approach to the structure and discursive stylistic - our main goal - so we could move towards the specific objectives to expand and document the Portuguese research at the printed newspaper in Paraíba (on the raising of a corpus of 15 obituary themed headlines, published in the journal A União in the period related to the twentieth century to the present day), analyze the same corpus in graphic-compositional and stylistic aspects (in this discursive perspective) and watch – and register – changes that have occurred in this genre, as well as stays in order to verify whether the journalistic headline gender is a discursive tradition, pointing to confirm this hypothesis, given the verified stays under a diachronic perspective. The graphic-compositional analysis of the corpus is guided primarily by the theories of Gradim (2000) and Pellim (2009), while the stylistic analysis, as regards the persona management theory is based on Coupland (2001), as the stylization with the use of anaphora and “catáfora” in Kock (1991) and, about the management with the headlines in the case of the death theme, basically, this study is guided by Freud (2009), Cross (2008) Amaral (2007) and Timothy (2010).

Abstract:
How did the scriptural changes contribute to the re-definition the necrological documents in the late Middle Ages and their adaptation to new challenges, so as to allow the performance of their function: ensuring the salvation of the soul of the dead ? The corpus of the diocese of Strasbourg reveals that beyond appearances of tradition, necrological documents diversified, a clearer differentiation between liturgical and administrative manuscripts emerged. Within the more complex documentary network of the memoria, they played a role in the normalisation and rationalisation of liturgical and administrative practices, especially from the fifteenth century onwards. While meeting with the internal needs of religious institutions, they also participated in the reform of the Church and built an anthropological community of the living and the dead

This work concerns at the same time the study of the method of Ibn Iyās in the organization and the production of its work Badāʼiʽ al-zuhūr fī waqāʼiʽ al-duhūr and on thematic analyses of contents focused on the economic and social data. The biographical approach of the first chapter insists in particular on the circle of friends in which the author evolved. The second chapter makes the point on the work as well as on the publishing of the chronicle through his organization in sections and volumes and from there to approach the question of the dating of the work. An inventory of the obituary and biographic notes by social category as well as the study of their contents and the method of Ibn Iyās are the object of the chapter 3, with a particular attention to poetic quotations accompanying such notices. Chapter 4 analyzes the facts relating to the social history and exceptional natural phenomena having attracted the attention of the author. Then the next chapter deals with economic issues, including the Nile floods and their impact on the economy, as well as monetary matters. In both chapters, the approach taken by Ibn Iyās holds attention. Chapter 6 discusses the sources used by the author and describes the process of text production. Three appendices on manuscripts, other works of Ibn Iyās and distributions made on the basis of the author expressions were used to conclude this work

Abstract:
An obituary focusing on Guy Butler's Shakespearean preoccupations. The 1999/2000 volume of Shakespeare in Southern Africa only appeared in 2001. The Butler obituary was included as a 'stop-press' item as the volume went to print, which accounts for the apparent anomaly between the date of publication and the date of Guy Butler's death.

Propper, Carrie. "Obituarizing Michael Jackson: Subject Formation through Material Cultural Branding." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/6030.

Full text
Abstract:
Historically, obituaries were created as news items and published in print media with the intentions of informing an audience of public hangings or similar sensational deaths. Over the years, obituaries changed in form to become a way of publicly notifying audiences of one’s life upon their death, focusing more on biography and familial structure than sensation. However, with advancements in communicative mediums, including the increased popularity and easy accessibility of the Internet, traditional understandings of the term ‘obituary’ are challenged to include all forms of media publications that draw on elements of sensation and biography. The combination of this new, inclusive definition and the increasing popularity and advancement of technological mediums has republicized deceased celebrities as marketable and profitable brands that rely on subject formation through media and participatory fandom. However, the branding of celebrated, deceased figures through processes of social subjectification often remains embedded within cultural texts. As a result, audiences are often unaware of their ability to shift or influence identities of the deceased, and their fandom becomes the target of alternative messages embedded in sites of obituarization. By applying Marshall McLuhan’s theory of technology as an extension of human consciousness in addition to Roland Barthes’ theory of mythologisation when examining Michael Jackson’s 2009 death, this thesis explains how the subject formation of deceased individuals becomes so powerful and globalized that their death becomes a positive and beneficial occurrence with regards to the profitability and marketability of their brand. Therefore, the subject formation of celebrated, deceased figures is a fragile process that is altering how North Americans mediate the culture surrounding death and dying.

Vanga, Kiala Pedro Lufulo. "Provérbios Bakongo de Rituais de Óbitos: Recolha, Estudo e Aplicação Didáctica." Master's thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10362/61781.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem of this study is the lack of understanding of obituary proverbs among juvenile people at Palanca neighborhood. We proposed to carry out the present subordinate work by the topic "Bakongo Proverbs of Obituary Rituals: Data Collection, Study and Ditactic Application". We apply four types of techniques for the data collection and study of proverbs: data collection form, participant observation and interview. After the data collection work, we preceded the bilingual listing (kikongo-portuguese) of the proverbs, as well as the circumstance of its application (the study) in the three funeral ceremonies performed by bakongo: funeral and closing of obituary. We have identified ethnolinguistic problems within the study group throughout our investigation. We elaborate didactic proposal, analytical plan in order to overcome the identified linguistic problems and the deviations of the Portuguese European norm. Furthermore, this plan makes also reference to the causes of the origin of these very same problems. Concerning cultural problems, through the clarification given by our informants, we understand that they are cultural procedures and not problems practiced by bakongo throughout the rituals of obituary. Finally, according to our experience in Portuguese teaching and from Portuguese language programs and textbooks of primary education, we propose a pedagogical project named: PROBEA - Bakongo Proverbs: Teaching and Learning. This project is designed to train teachers and students who join the project.
