Abstract:

After the end of World War II, so-called New Religious Movements (NRM) emerged as branches of the traditional religions. These NRM’s are characterized by new ways of forming belief systems and has traditions that are different from the conventional religions. The main purpose of this study was to investigate and study how the Korean founder Sun Myung Moon of the NRM, Family Federation of World Peace and Unification, depict and portray the two genders in his proclamations about human salvation. In addition, the study applied a gender theoretical framework, in order to interpret Moon’s depiction of how gender is described in relation to his doctrine of salvation. What emerge along the course of study was that the path to salvation, depicted in reverent Moon’s enunciations, was the faith in Jesus and the relationship between the man and woman. The study also illustrated that the elimination of evil, such as Satan and the ideology of communism, is the foundation to establish the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth. In conclusion, the salvation of mankind is fulfilled through reverent Moon, as the second Messiah, through the marriage and the reproduction of sinless children. In summary, reverent Moon’s proclamations in his theology, often advocate and encourage the traditional gender roles. Moreover, the theoretical framework visualizes that Moon, in his theology, is depicting a dichotomy and hierarchy among the genders and thereby embraces a conservative view of gender roles. The didactic relevance of this study is the importance to illustrate gender perspective and gender roles within the teaching of religion. That is because it may counteract stereotypical perceptions among students.

Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to study how some upper secondary teachers define and understand the terms New Religious Movement, New Religiosity and cult. We also look at what the teachers teach about and why they pick those specific parts of the course. Firstly, to get a wider view of this subject we looked at previous research about the teaching of New Religious Movements. In addition to the previous research we did our own research where we interviewed upper secondary teachers from two different schools. Secondly, for our results we analysed the transcripts by using two different theoretical frameworks: religious didactics in the form of abductive perspective in connection to the didactical questions - what, why and how? We have also used a hermeneutic interpretation when looking at the empirical material.Through our research we found that teachers have some difficulties defining the terms “New Religious Movements”, “New Religiosity” and “Cults”. They also have a problem with differentiating them from each other. The research shows that even the teachers’ selection, planning and implementation of their teaching varies between the schools for different reasons. Some of this stems from the teachers’ capacity within the subject, different interpretations of the syllabus and the influence that students have on the teaching.

Abstract:

In this essay, I problematize the use of the term sect in the media, I present the concept of neo-religious movements and justify the use of the term. The essay is mainly about the podcast Sekter. The question of issue is how are neo-religious movements portrayed in the podcast Sekter and how does the podcast Sekter handle and present its material. The purpose is to investigate potential risks in the use of the term sects. The podcast Sekter is the main material that the study consists of, on which i preform a comtent analysis. In the podcast, the neo-religious movements are portrayed most negatively without any benefits by the host of the podcast.

Abstract:

This essay aims to examine textbooks and digital textbooks for how they present new religious movements and secular world view in upper secondary school in Sweden. This essay also strives to examine if this presentation is non-confessional or non-religious. These results will then be compared between traditional textbooks and the digital textbooks. In total six textbooks are included in the study where of three are traditional and three are digital.The study shows that the textbooks are presenting new religious movements and secular world view from a historical and a character based perspective in most cases, the digital being less so. It has also shown that the digital textbooks don’t include new religious movements and that the traditional textbooks might be non-religious concerning secular life views and not at all concerning the new religious movements. For the digital textbooks, the results are inconclusive.Keywords:

Abstract:

Skolan skall vara en skola för alla där alla ska må bra och ingen skall känna sig kränkt eller utsatt på grund av tro, kön, identitet, hudfärg etc. Skolan skall främja elevernas förståelse för andra människor och utveckla förmåga till inlevelse och medkänsla. Undervisningen bör vara saklig och allsidig och skolan bör vara öppen för skilda uppfattningar och uppmuntra att de skapas. Syftet med uppsatsen är att belysa hur nyreligiösa rörelser skildras i dagens läroböcker utifrån skolans värdegrund. Sex olika läroböcker för gymnasieskolan religionskunskap A ingick i undersökningen. Utifrån de olika läroböckerna undersökte jag hur läromedelsförfattarna tog upp ett antal nyreligiösa rörelser. Tidigare forskning visar att det redan finns ett antal kända problem kring läroböcker. Det är främst professor Härenstam som belyser det. Hans forskning handlar främst om läroböckers sätt att skildra islam och buddhism. Han menar att brist på plats är ett stort problem och att läromedelsförfattarna inte alltid är källkritiska när de skriver läroböcker. Mitt resultat visar att flera av läroböckerna inte alltid är sakliga och objektiva. Därför kan de lätt kränka elever eller skapa plattform där fördomar och förutfattade meningar frodas. Analysen av denna undersökning visar att lärarna måste vara medvetna om vad de lär ut och på vilket sätt. Att använda sig av flera läroböcker och plocka ur dem gör att man kringgår problemet. Samtidigt är det viktigt att lärarna är källkritiska och även tidigt lär eleverna att reflektera och vara källkritiska.

Abstract:

Scientologin är en nyreligiös rörelse som skildrats flitigt inom populärlitteraturen, vilket gör att den blivit något bekant för många. Syftet med denna uppsats är att använda en bekant nyreligiös rörelse och utifrån denna skapa ett undervisningsunderlag som rör innehållet i Religion 2. Uppsatsen behandlar scientologins kännetecken samt förhållande till världsreligionerna. Den teoretiska ram som arbetet innehåller är kärnan ur Russel T. McCutcheons föreskrivna sätt att studera religion utifrån rörelsens historia, rörelsen tro och världsbild, rörelsens sociala och praktiska uttryck samt rörelsens relation till övriga religioner. Denna forskning rör innehåller i Religion 2 på ett mer avgränsat och specifikt sätt än tidigare forskning kring rörelsen. Uppsatsen är en kvalitativ systematisk litteraturstudie och resultatet en sammanställning av tidigare forskning kring scientologirörelsen, utifrån frågeställningarna ovan. De slutsatser som detta arbete ger vid handen är framförallt scientologins koppling till äldre traditionella religioner som buddhism och kristendom, men också moderna andliga strömningar som new age. Vad gäller scientologins kännetecken utkristalliseras en rörelse med gnostiska drag där kunskap och självutveckling är centralt.

Abstract:

Den här studien undersöker hur nyreligiösa rörelser framställs i tolv läroböcker för högstadiet och gymnasiet i den svenska skolan. Uppsatsen fokuserar på sex läroböcker från 1970,-1980-och 1990-talet och sex läroböcker publicerad efter 2010. I uppsatsen görs det även en jämförelse mellan de olika läromedlen för att finna skillnader och likheter. De resultat jag fick fram var bland annat skillnader mellan läroböckerna gällande utrymme, där de äldre läroböckerna valde att lyfta fram nyreligiösa rörelser betydligt mer jämfört med läroböcker publicerad efter 2010.

Abstract:

Abstract Läroböcker är en central del i skolans utbildning och är den dominerande kunskapskällan i undervisningen. Det framkommer även att lärarna lämnar ett stort förtroende till läroboksproducenterna. Problematiken är att det numera inte finns en statlig nämnd som granskar och tillhandahåller listor över godkända läroböcker. I och med detta krävs det en kritisk granskning utav läroböckerna vilket även är denna studies syfte. Nyreligiösa rörelser är i dagens läge så pass integrerat i samhället att det kan talas om vår tids folktro. Vi har därför i denna studie genomfört en textanalys utav sex läromedelsböcker avsedda för gymnasiet inom ämnet religionskunskap med fokus på hur nyreligiösa rörelser framställs och betraktas i läroböcker. Litteraturen präglas av olika epoker där tre stycken böcker är utgivna efter läroplanen Lpf 94 och innan den senare utgivna läroplanen Lgy 11 blev publicerad. De resterande tre böcker är tryckta efter att Lgy 11 trätt i kraft. I resultat framkommer det att läroböckerna inte motsvarar de kunskapsmål som finns i läroplanerna. Dels på grund utav att innehållet av nyreligiösa rörelser får en begränsad del i antal procent i läroböckerna jämfört mot världsreligionerna samt att nyreligiösa rörelser framställs med klumpiga formuleringar och ordval. Abstract:

Syftet med denna uppsats är att hitta en förklaring till varför andliga healinginriktningar med tiden upphör att kunna bedömas som andliga. Undersökningen tar avstamp i hypotesen att socialpsykologiska skäl ligger bakom. Den tidigare forskningen, gjord av Roy Wallis, Stefan Thau et al, Małgorzata Kossowska och Maciej Sekerdej, Juliette Schaafsma och Kipling D. Williams, samt en tidigare uppsats skriven av undertecknad, behandlar därför socialpsykologi med koppling till rörelser. Arbetet undersöker healingorganisationen Reconnective Healing som tidigare kategoriserats som andlig men som nyligen genomgått organisatoriska förändringar. Forskningsfrågorna berör vilka förändringar som skett och vart organisationen idag kan placeras begreppsmässigt. Den teoretiska bakgrunden utgörs av Olav Hammer, Roy Wallis, Christopher Partridge samt Anton Geels och Owe Wikström samt deras begreppsdefinitioner av andlighet, sekt, kult, religion och nyreligion. Även teorier kring socialpsykologi, av Lars Svedberg och Björn Nilsson, presenteras. Metoden för arbetet är kvalitativa intervjuer av Reconnective Healingutövare, samt komparativ analys. Resultatet visar att organisationen rört sig från andlighetsbegreppet och närmat sig begreppet nyreligion. De organisatoriska förändringarna tycks bottna i grundaren Eric Pearls vilja att minska pluralistiska synsätt inom organisationen genom att exkludera medlemmar samt strama åt regler och riktlinjer. Vidare tyder resultatet på att organisationer generellt kanske aldrig kan klassificeras som andliga då socialpsykologin inom gruppsammansättningar skapar faktorer som strider mot det mesta som definierar andlighet.
The purpose of this essay is to find a reason to why spiritual healing movements in time tend to fall outside the concept of spirituality. The hypothesis for this work is that it happens due to the social psychology within group constellations. Therefore the previous research, by Roy Wallis, Stefan Thau et al, Małgorzata Kossowska och Maciej Sekerdej, Juliette Schaafsma och Kipling D. Williams, and an earlier essay written by me, focuses on social psychology with connections to movements of different kinds. The essay investigates the healing organization Reconnective Healing, which has been categorized as spiritual but might not be anymore, due to some recent organizational changes. The research questions focus on what kind of changes has happened and where the organization can be placed in a concept categorisation today. The theoretical background is based on Olav Hammer, Roy Wallis, Christopher Partridge and Anton Geels and Owe Wikström. It consists of the concept definitions of spirituality, cult, sect, religion and new religion. Moreover, theories evolving social psychology, by Lars Svedberg and Björn Nilsson, is presented. The method used is comparative analysis and qualitative interviews of Reconnective Healing Practitioners. The result shows that the organization has moved from the concept of spirituality towards the concept of new religion. The cause of the organizational changes seems to be the founder, Eric Pearls will to decrease pluralistic views within the organisation, by excluding members and tighten the rules and guidelines. Moreover, the result indicates that organisations in general might never be able to be categorised as spiritual since the social psychology within group constellations creates factors that contradict most contents within spirituality.

Abstract:

Just a few years after the end of WWII, the American author Lafayette Ronald Hubbard developed the new religious movement Scientology, which has evolved over the years into one of the largest new religious movements in the world. Two decades later, an American pastor’s son named David Berg, received a revelation from God, which led to the founding of the new religious movement The Family International, formerly known as God’s Children. Over the years there have been a number of defectors that wanted to change and turn their life around. But only a few managed to gather confidence to tell the rest of the world of the circumstances and living conditions in the new religious movement that have characterized major parts of their lives. The main purpose of this study was to elucidate how former members and defectors portrayed and experienced the explicit and implicit exercise of power in two, American founded, new religious movements. In addition, the study applied the Austrian psychologist Sigmund Freud’s theories in dynamic psychology and religion, in order to interpret the former members depictions, in relation to the attitudes expressed. The didactic relevance of this study refers to the growth and the more frequent sight of new religious movements in our society. The society, primarily in the media, but also in scientific contexts, has associates these movements with the negative loaded word sect, which has led to appearance of difficulties in the education of religion. Therefore, contributes this study, based on a neutral and a non-evaluative perspective of new religious movements, to eliminate prejudices and create tolerance among all students. What emerged along the course of the study was that the explicit control and exercise of power was established in the charismatic attribute and, above all, the power holder’s ability to convince and persuade the members was one of the major parts in the power structure. The study also illustrates how the implicit exercise of power of the Scientology constantly revolved around money and The Family International around sex relations. In conclusion, the leaders explicit and implicit exercise of power integrates with each other and has its foundation in the charismatic leadership and the ability to convince and persuade its members. The conclusion also illustrates how the members adaption and submission to its leader was an unconscious act according to Freud’s theory, concerning defense mechanism. As a result, the leaders achieved to manage the movements without resistance and questioning, and also got expression for their own manners.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to try to develop a better understanding of the process that being a member in a new religious movement might imply, and to find out how the identity of a defector changes from the time upon entering the movement, while they are within the movement and after leaving the movement. We also wanted to examine what kind of help and support would be needed around a defection. The study focuses on identity and our questions were: How does the defector describe him/herself and his/her identity before joining the new religious movement until the period after defecting? What demand for support and help may there be when defecting from new religious movement? The theoretical starting point was The Identity Theory, Structural Role Theory and KASAM. A qualitative method was used and four defectors from new religious movements were interviewed. The findings were that they described themselves as ”seekers” and ”lost” when they entered the movement and within the initial phase they repressed their personal identity whilst their social identity increased in strength. In due course, doubts began to arise and these continued to grow until the time of defection with mental instability as a result. The process led to the creation of a new selfidentity. Primarily support and help with strengthening the personal identity was needed. It would be advantageous if this support could be given by someone that had defected previously and with whom they could identify.

Abstract:

I föreliggande uppsats undersöks hur religionslärare undervisar om nyreligiositet i religionskunskap 2. I uppsatsen har vilka metoder samt vilket urval i innehåll lärarna gör i undervisningen om nyreligiositet varit i fokus. Frågeställningarna hur lärare arbetar med kränkningar/förutfattade meningar om nyreligiositet samt vilken omfattning ämnet har i undervisningen har även varit aktuellt. För att få en tydligare ingång har uppsatsen försökt lyfta den problematik som ofta lyfts i undervisningssituationer och som ofta skapar en utmanande miljö att undervisa för lärare men även en utmaning för elever att lära i. För att undersöka frågeställningarna och få fler synpunkter har åtta lärare intervjuats som undervisar i religionskunskap 2. En hermeneutisk metod har använts för att tolka deras svar. För att koppla de intervjuade lärarnas undervisning till den nedskrivna didaktiken har den teoretiska utgångspunkten utgått från didaktiska teorier, främst de tre modellerna förmedlingsdidaktik, progressionsdidaktik samt hermeneutikdidaktik. Resultatet visar på att hur lärare undervisar i förhållande till metoder, innehåll samt omfattning är ytterst individuellt. Det visar på en markant skillnad i hur undervisningen kan förefalla om nyreligiositet och i vilken omfattning den bedrivs. Resultatet visar även på att hur lärare väljer att hantera kränkningar/förutfattade meningar även är individuellt, men lyfter även behovet av ingripande när detta sker i klassrummet.

Abstract:

Hur religion och andra livsåskådningar framställs i läroböcker är ett nödvändigt fält att vetenskapligt forska om. Vi lever i ett digitaliserat samhälle och kontinuerligt emottar ny information; sålunda har religionsämnet tillfallit att bli ett ytterst relevant läroämne. Detta grundar sig i att Statens läroboksnämnd SIL (Statens institut för läromedelsinformation), vars uppdrag var att granska centrala läromedel lades ned 1992. Därefter instiftades Skolverket och den granskningen av läromedel som fanns tidigare upphörde. I dagens skolväsende har läroboken en stark ställning som dels anger vilken riktning som lämpar sig för kommande undervisningsupplägg och som dels är kunskapsgaranterande. Det massmedia skildrar kan böcker antingen validera eller bestrida, sålunda är det väsentlig att granska den inställning och bild som presenteras i svenska läroböcker. Studiens syfte är att granska hur Jehovas vittnen skildrats och framställts i läroböcker utarbetade i enlighet med Lgr 11 och Lgy 11. Sedermera åskådliggöra hur de olika framställningarna skiljer sig och problematisera detta. Materialet till detta arbete innefattar totalt nio läroböcker där fem av dessa inriktar sig på högstadiet och resterande fyra för gymnasiet. Utifrån väl avgränsat material och den teoretiska utgångspunkten granskas det hur Jehovas vittnen framställs i läroböckerna. Ramverket grundar sig på islamologen Jonas Otterbecks forskning kring läromedelsanalyser där han utformat en matris som fungerar som ett analysverktyg. Det verktyg som Otterbeck konstruerat har omarbetats för att bättre lämpa sig till denna undersökning. Den teoretiska utgångspunkten utgår ifrån att läroböckers beskrivningar har en benägenhet att vara tendentiösa i sitt urval, onyanserade, väsentlig information utelämnas och sålunda har olika religioner eller livsåskådningar framställts ofördelaktigt. Efter granskning av materialet synliggörs det att läroböckernas framställningar är stundom tendentiösa, förenklade och att grundläggande information har utsorterats. Rörelsen framställs som emellanåt homogen, att Jehovas vittnen allenast knackar dörr och förkastar födelsedagsfiranden. Största skillnaden mellan läroböckerna är att gymnasieböckerna tenderar att vara mer detaljrika i sina skildringar, men kan dock bero på att författarna har fått ett större utrymme. För att motverka att den stereotypa bilden av Jehovas vittnen kvarstår är det sålunda essentiellt att skolundervisningen förmedlar en saklig och korrekt skildring av rörelsen.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to analyze how two former members of the Church of Scientology describe their lives and the process from member to non-member. This will be achieved by answering how they describe their lives within the church and how they describe their process leaving the church. Also, by analyzing what crucial factors influenced their decision to leave the church. The study uses a qualitative text analysis to analyze two biographies written by two former members, Miscavige Hill and Tunedal. The study concludes that the two former members lives in the church differ. Of that reason that one of them grew up in the movement and the other joined as an adult. Also, one of them were an ordinary member of the movement and the other were a member of the very exclusive “sea organization” within the Church of Scientology. Furthermore, the result of the study shows that the process from member to non-member is a lengthy process, and that there are a number of factors that contributed to the members decision to leave the Church of Scientology, such as the church demands for donation and the church control over its members. The study demonstrates the need for source criticism, and to be critical of stories from both members and former members. Not everyone has the same experience of new religious movement and each member has an individual experience. Whereby there will always be different versions of “the truth”.

Abstract:

Uppsatsens undersökning bygger på en studie av den officiella Scientologikyrkans hemsida: www.scientologi.se. Den frågeställning varpå uppsatsen främst baseras på är: På vilket sätt förmedlar Scientologikyrkan sitt budskap via www.scientologi.se? Tidigare forskning kring ämnet är väldigt knapphändig vilket motiverar valet av uppsatsämne. Uppsatsens teoretiska utgångspunkt baseras på Christopher Hellands begrepp religion online och online religion. Studien lägger därför stor vikt på huruvida Scientologikyrkans svenska hemsida är en religion online eller en online religion. En koppling görs även mellan undersökningens resultat och tidigare forskning kring ämnet, för att belägga det som har framkommit genom den utförda studien.

Abstract:

G. R. S. Mead is an important but neglected historical personality of the British fin-de-siècle occult, Theosophical, and post-Theosophical milieu. While previous scholars of Theosophy have portrayed the Theosophical movement as quite cohesive in nature, I argue that it might have been a lot more pluralistic, with ostensibly key Theosophical concepts being open for debate. By a careful study of Mead’s editorial activity, his debates with other Theosophists in leading occultist journal over the period 1890s through 1910s, I illustrate that Mead held alternative views of key Theosophical concepts. This gives us a clue as to how the movement of Theosophy can be characterized differently. I suggest that we speak of many different “Theosophies” rather than one singular “Theosophy” to better capture the seemingly diverse makeup of the Theosophical movement. I look at three areas wherein Mead’s views differed from those of other important Theosophists: the concept of “the Masters” as spiritual authority, which sources to turn to and how to interpret them, and the question of whether occultism should be understood primarily in theoretical or in practical terms. I propose that by seeing Theosophy as a debating ground where many different Theosophists competed over the definition of their particular kind of Theosophy, we might also better account for why so many post-Theosophical currents emerged. Lastly, Mead’s concept of “Gnosis” might have served as a bridge between his Theosophical and post-Theosophical periods, as the concept’s meaning, along with Mead’s spiritual outlook, does not appear to have changed over time. This gives some consequences to how we conceive of post-Theosophy, since he does not fit neatly within that category.
