Abstract:

Abstract:
Among his varied publications, Nuto Revelli (1919–2004) produced three collections of oral testimonies gathered from the contadini (peasants) of Piedmont: La strada del davai, Il mondo dei vinti and L’anello forte. This article argues that these collections were the product of the same specific impegno del dopo (‘obligation of afterwards’) as his initial autobiographical writings, which had arisen from his experiences as an officer on the Russian Front during the Second World War. From this premise, the article then examines the interaction of Revelli's sense of impegno del dopo with the methodology he developed. The article concludes with an assessment of Revelli's stated aims and his actual achievements.

Abstract:
2008/2009

Abstract:
This wide-ranging study uses historical and archaeological evidence to consider humanity's interactions with the environment, fashioning agricultural, gardening and horticultural regimes over a millennium and a half. The discussions of archaeological finds of seeds from discarded rubbish including animal fodder and bedding show the wide range of wild species present, as well as cultivated and gathered plants in the diet of inhabitants and livestock. Pollen analyses, and studies of wood, mosses, and beetles, alongside a look at the local natural environment, and comparison with medieval written records give us a tantalizing picture of early Winchester. The earliest record is by Ælfric of Eynsham in his 11th-century Nomina Herbarum. From medieval records come hints of gardens within the city walls, and considerable detail about agriculture and horticulture, and produce brought into the city. Wild fruit and nuts were also being gathered from the countryside for the town’s markets and mills. At St Giles’ Fair exotic imported spices and fruits were also sold. All these sources of evidence are brought together to reveal more fully the roles of agriculture and the environment in the development Winchester.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the contrasting experiences of Rwanda and China. It does so to show how an early-stage and late-stage capitalist transformation might reveal risk involved in developmentalism. Rwanda’s post-genocide government is analysed as early-developmentalist. Here the focus is on agricultural transformation. An analysis of Rwanda’s developmentalism focuses on the insecurity of the elite, the insecurities of the region, and the challenges of reconstruction. The Chinese case starts with the accession to power of the Chinese Communist Party. It looks at the violence of the Great Leap Forward and then the post-Mao period. It analyses the sources of growth in China since 1978, showing how the state’s legitimacy shifted from socialist nationalism to a growth obsession in which capitalist accumulation became the source of legitimacy. It emphasizes China’s massive nut incomplete progress in poverty reduction and transformation.

Abstract:
Wildfires can pose severe threats to human lives and assets as well as for biodiversity at a global scale. Due to climate, land-use changes, and often inadequate forest management, wildfire regimes are also in transition, causing modifications in these disturbance events' spatial distribution, timing, size, frequency, and severity. In particular, increasing fire severity causes slower post-fire recovery times and a depletion in the resistance and resilience capacities which potentially trigger regime shifts in the state of ecosystems. Satellite remote sensing (SRS) Earth Observations (EO) allow us to characterize the ecological impacts of wildfires and assess spatiotemporal trends in fire severity. The SeverusPT project is currently pursuing the objective of harnessing SRS/EO time series to characterize wildfire severity and assess its impacts on ecosystems and human activities. Our primary objectives of this exploratory research paper are two-fold: (i) assess national and regional spatiotemporal trends in fire severity and burnt area, and (ii) evaluate if fire severity regionally scales up with the total burnt area. Satellite image time series (SITS) from Terra/MODIS were obtained to calculate fire severity through the Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) and the difference between pre- and post-fire (ΔNBR). Trend analyses were employed to quantify fire severity and burned area spatiotemporal patterns. Linear regression assessed the association level between total burnt area by year/region (predictor) and fire severity (response). Preliminary results show that at a national level from 2001 until ca. 2008 - 2009 there was a general decrease in fire severity, followed by a reversal of this trend. This turning point has led to a general increase with new severity highs formed in 2017 and 2020. We also found wide variation in fire severity at the regional level (NUTS-III), and trend analysis display that most regions increased both in burned area and severity. Linear regression showed that burned area and fire severity are correlated despite this association being highly structured at the regional level, forming a continuous spectrum from highly area-severity coupled regions (e.g., AM Porto, Médio Tejo, Viseu, Coimbra, Alto-Minho) to less coupled ones (e.g., Cávado, Trás-os-Montes, Alentejo). These results may support that the increasing amount and size of burnt area will scale up into higher fire severity for specific regions. These preliminary results from the SeverusPT project show that MODIS image time series allow assessing the spatial variation and the temporal trends of fire severity in a standardized and synoptic fashion. Mapping fire severity, its spatiotemporal variation and addressing its environmental drivers are now more crucial than ever to understand its dynamics and support fire management and prevention.

Abstract:
A novel task-based conceptual design method introduced around a decade ago has been presented from its most characteristic points including the general idea, usage and modification of previous art, usage and modification of independent sets of functional and mechanical means for implementation of those functions, creation of intermediate mechanical-functional sets supporting the development of new structures like models, visualization of the design process, and so on. The current paper aims to reveal a non-computerized graphically visualized set of actions covering all the above-mentioned major steps of the suggested methodology. The success of synthesizing action greatly depends on the method of creation submechanisms or virtual mechanisms, which are making possible visualization and consideration intermediate structures helping to identify and implement a necessary function. The method of creating of such subcategories and application of elementary movements or set of links for explaining or satisfying demanded set of functions could be considered the main methodical novelty and strength of proposed conceptual design method. Two examples are included: the first reinvention of a known tool—Locking Pliers from database and second synthesis of a novel hand tool—Adjustable Nut Wrench.

Abstract:
Benzene, 1, is a hard nut to crack. The hexagonal ring of carbon atoms each with one hydrogen atom attached has a much greater stability than its electronic structure, with an alternation of double and single carbon–carbon bonds, might suggest. But for reasons fully understood by chemists, that very alternation, corresponding to a continuous stabilizing cloud of electrons all around the ring, endows the hexagon with great stability and the ring persists unchanged through many reactions. The groups of atoms attached to the ring, though, may come and go, and the reaction type responsible for replacing them is commonly ‘electrophilic substitution’. Whereas the missiles of Reaction 15 sniff out nuclei by responding to their positive electric charge shining through depleted regions of electron clouds, electrophiles, electron lovers, are missiles that do the opposite. They sniff out the denser regions of electron clouds by responding to their negative charge. Let’s suppose you want to make, for purposes you are perhaps unwilling to reveal, some TNT; the initials denote trinitrotoluene. You could start with the common material toluene, which is a benzene ring with a methyl group (–CH3) in place of one H atom, 2. Your task is to replace three of the remaining ring H atoms with nitro groups, –NO2, to achieve 3. And not just any of the H atoms: you need the molecule to have a symmetrical array of these groups because other arrangements are less stable and therefore dangerous. It is known that a mixture of concentrated nitric and sulfuric acids contains the species called the ‘nitronium ion’, NO2+, 4, and this is the reagent you will use. Before we watch the reaction itself, it is instructive to see what happens when concentrated sulfuric acid and nitric acid are mixed. If we stand, suitably protected, in the mixture, we see a sulfuric acid molecule, H2SO4, thrust a proton onto a neighbouring nitric acid molecule, HNO3. (Funnily enough, according to the discussion in Reaction 2, nitric ‘acid’ is now acting as a base, a proton acceptor! I warned you of strange fish in deep waters.) The initial outcome of this transfer is unstable; it spits out an H2O molecule which wanders off into the crowd. We see the result: the formation of a nitronium ion, the agent of nitration and the species that carries out the reaction for you.

Full text
Abstract:
The self-loosening process of a bolted joint consists of two distinct stages. The early stage of self-loosening is due to the cyclic plastic deformation of the materials. The second stage of self-loosening is characterized by the backing off of the nut. The current study is concentrated on the experimental investigation of the second stage of self-loosening with the aim to explore the mechanisms responsible for the phenomenon. Over a hundred bolted joints were experimentally tested using a specially designed testing apparatus. M12×1.75 bolts and nuts were used. The experiments mimicked two plates jointed by a bolt and a nut and were subjected to cyclic transverse shear loading. During an experiment, the relative displacement between the two clamped plates, denoted by δ, was a control parameter. The clamping force, the relative rotation between the nut and the bolt, and the applied transverse load were monitored and recorded for each loading cycle. For a given preload, the relationship between, Δδ/2, the amplitude of the relative displacement between the two clamped plates, and, NL, the number of loading cycles to loosening followed a pattern similar to a fatigue curve. There existed an endurance limit below which self-loosening would not persist. A larger preload resulted in a larger endurance limit. However, a large preload increased the possibility for the bolt to fail in fatigue. It was found that the surface condition, which influenced the friction coefficient, had a significant influence on self-loosening resistance. The results also reveal that the use of a regular nut is superior to the use of a flange nut in terms of self-loosening resistance. An “endurance diagram” concept was developed that can be used directly for the design and evaluation of the bolted joints.

<p>High-strength frictional bolted joints in civil engineering structures are corroded due to the thin coating thickness at the corners of the bolts and the nuts. A sandglass-shaped bolt composed of a countersunk head bolt and countersunk sleeve nut is being developed to secure the constant coating thickness and prevent corrosion. As its thread diameter is smaller than the usual one by the mechanism, an ultra-high-strength material must be applied to require the same fastening capacity as conventional bolts while considering stress concentration related to hydrogen embrittlement. This paper proposes a novel thread shape for the prototype of the sandglass-shaped bolt, whose stress concentration factor can be reduced by more than 30% current standard thread in Japan, focused on the magnitude of stress concentration. Moreover, FE analysis reveals the general fastening performance by comparing with or without the proposed thread.</p>

Users of European statistical data have expressed their objective need for harmonization of the statistical methods and approaches in order to enable the provision of comparable analytical data for the entire European Union (EU). With the accession of Bulgaria as an EU member country, the systematization of the country’s regions is implemented on the basis of the adopted thresholds for territorial classification of the European Union, by introducing a three-level regionalization (zoning), in agreement with the criteria of the territorial units NUTS level 1, NUTS level 2 and NUTS level 3. From this perspective, the paper focuses exclusively on key economic indicators at NUTS level 2 on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria, more particularly on the gross domestic product per capita, employment and unemployment rates, level of socioeconomic activities by country’s regions, and reveals, in conclusion, the pronounced imbalances in the development of individual regions.

Abstract:
Abstract Placement and orientation of fasteners in assemblies is generally based on convenience or static load and strength considerations. Vibration and other dynamic loads can result in loosening of threaded product, particularly when cyclic shear stresses are present. This paper investigates the placement of a bolt and nut on a compound cantilever beam subjected to dynamic inertial loading. Calculations for an inertial loaded, cantilever, Euler-Bernoulli beam show that the dynamic shear stress is maximum near the dynamic nodal lines, and essentially vanishes near the anti-nodes. Experiments with a compound cantilever beam assembly with one fastener reveal that loosening occurs more readily when the bolt and nut are placed near a nodal line. Data presented include time to loosen, break-away torque, and acceleration level. The data shows that fastener integrity is maintained for longer periods of time and with lower tightening torques, when the bolt and nut are positioned away from nodal lines where shear stresses are lower, even though acceleration levels are higher.

Abstract:
A recent three-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) investigation on self-loosening of bolted joints revealed that two major mechanisms were responsible for the second-stage (nut rotation) self-loosening of bolted joints. One of the mechanisms is the slip-stick contact of the thread surfaces under the combined contact pressure and reversed bending moment exerted from the reversed transverse loading. The current investigation is a detailed study of the slip-stick contact of the thread surfaces with models that mimic the bolt loading condition. The contact pressure and the reversed bending moment are obtained from an earlier simulation for an M12 bolt. The FE simulations indicate that, with the contact pressure on the thread surface of the bolt and nut, the alternating bending moment results in the gradual motion between the contact thread surfaces. A detailed look at the contact surfaces reveals that localized slip along the tangential direction occurs in part of the contact area and the accumulation of this local slip is responsible for the gradual relative motion between bolt and nut. The FE simulations also indicate that the amplitude of the bending moment greatly influences the relative displacement between the bolt and the nut. There exists a threshold below which local slip will not occur. Results from a two-dimensional (2-D) model are discussed and compared with those obtained from a 3-D model.

Firstly, the friction torque model considering the load distribution of thread teeth is established including the components such as curvature friction torque, friction torque due to spinning sliding, pure sliding friction torque between rollers and carriers, friction torque generated by the viscosity of lubricant, and preload torque. Secondly, the contribution of the friction torque components and torque distribution on the roller thread teeth are investigated. Finally, efficiency analysis is conducted by discussing the influences of structure parameters of the inverted planetary roller screw mechanism and operating conditions. Computational results reveal that the total friction torque and efficiency are influenced by axial load, number of roller thread teeth, nut speed, contact angle, and helix angle of nut with different extents. This study provides an understanding of the relationship between friction torque, transmission efficiency, and system design parameters, which can be employed to enhance the inverted planetary roller screw mechanism optimization design.

Abstract:
The current research aims to apply cluster analysis using the software ArcGIS in the study of the food industry in Bulgaria for the period 2010 to 2020. The use of clustering methods is necessary to differentiate homogeneous groups of administrative-territorial units of NUTS 3 level on certain indicators to reveal several features and implement specific economic policies and measures for areas of a cluster and others. The grouping of the areas according to the considered indicators was done with the tool Grouping Analysis. Grouping and classification techniques are some of the most widely used methods in machine learning. We have selected No_spatial_constraint for the Spatial Constraints parameter, for grouping using the K-Means algorithm. Based on the results of the average intergroup connection method, the areas are grouped into 7 clusters (food industry, 2010 and 2020; food and beverage products for the period 2010-2020) and into 4 clusters (tobacco production for the period 2010-2020). The selection of indicators based on which the clusters are formed is following the generally accepted indicators for assessing the state and importance of the food industry in the structure of the economy and their information accessibility. The following indicators were used output for 2010 and 2020, employees for 2010 and 2020, and export earnings for 2010 and 2020 for the given territorial unit The territorial distribution of the population, in combination with the historical and modern economic development of the settlements, forms the regional differences in the development of the food industry in the country. The cluster analysis of certain indicators for the assessment of the food industry at the NUTS 3 level for 2010 and 2020 shows some change in the trends in the territorial development of the industry. The cluster analysis shows that there are slight territorial differences at the NUTS 3 level in food production, with large consumer centers and markets being the most important. In the activities of tobacco and beverage production, the territorial differences are minimal.

Abstract:
Based on mixture model, the numerical simulation of solid-liquid two-phase flow in a double channel pump (Specific speed ns = 81) was carried out. The effects of particle diameter, particle volume fraction and flow rate on solid volume concentration distribution, relative velocity distribution and abrasion characteristics were studied. The results reveal that in the impeller, more particles concentrate at the nut of the shaft end and the edge of the impeller outlet. So those regions are worn seriously. The abrasive types are sliding wear on the impeller outlet edge and impact wear on the nut respectively. In the wall of the volute, the concentrated areas of particles move round the anticlockwise direction when the mixture flow rate is larger. The reason is the mixture velocity is larger as the flow rate increases, and meanwhile the centrifugal force and gravity force are invariable. So the particles move round the impeller rotational direction consequently. In the volute, particles concentrate on the tongue and wall region, especially on the sections I, II, V and VII. So the areas are easily worn out. The abrasive type is the heavy sliding wear in the volute wall. Numerical simulation results are consistent with the actual situation. It follows that the calculating method is feasible.

Abstract:
CFD analysis of flow through high pressure packaging seal passage of a typical land based gas turbine was performed which contained a rotating bolted joint region. Analysis reveals that the annular space between the nut and the counterbore surface acts as a fluid pump, sucking and pumping out fluid with significant temperature rise as high as 40 F. Factorial DoEs were carried out to filter out vital few parameters among geometric, flow and operational parameters that impacts counterbore flow. A detailed space filling DoE with more than 100 CFD models were developed and studied to estimate the influence of parameters impacting counterbore mass flow. A mathematical model (transfer function) developed using PEZ was created to calculate counterbore mass flow as a function of vital few geometric and flow variables. Finally, 2D Axi symmetric thermal analysis with counterbore mass flow modelling better matched the field temperature compared to that of one without counterbore model.

Abstract:
The establishment and enlargement of the European Union have been partly motivated by catching up on higher living standards of living. This study examines whether developmental convergence can be demonstrated among the NUTS 2 regions of the Union. The existence of convergence among the EU is generally approached from an economic perspective by using macroeconomic indicators. Although these metrics are suitable for comparing the performance of Member States, they are less reflective of each country's social well-being. Several analyses, usually based on mortality indicators, have been conducted in an attempt to characterize convergence from a social point of view. However, these calculations are usually limited to country-level convergence analyses with diseases and causes of death in their focus. Thus, this study applies a complex measure, the Human Development Index (HDI), to examine convergence at a regional level. For this purpose, the regional HDI is calculated and the existence of absolute and conditional beta convergence is assessed. Our calculations confirm convergence among EU regions over the period between 2006 and 2017, but the analysis also reveals divergent trends and various national characteristics that will call into question the long-term sustainability of equalization.
