Abstract:

Abstract:
Awareness of culture and transculturally oriented care is becoming increasingly important as the world becomes closer, more complex and multicultural, so there is a need to bring into focus the interests and practical application of all health professionals. In order to improve the health-oriented behavior of members of different cultural groups, and thus prevent the occurrence of negative conflicts and destructive behavior there is a need to develop transcultural nursing around the world and also in Serbia. Global trends in terms of migratory change, imply the need to change the current practice in education and application of transcultural nursing among nurses in order to improve the quality of health care in Serbia and thus achieve equality in the provision of culturally congruent health care.

Abstract:
People’s health beliefs and practices are affected by the culture in which they exist. In this sense; it is essential that nurses who experience the most interactions with health buyers/receivers and deliver health care services to those who have different cultures should know health related cultural beliefs and practices of those to whom they deliver health services in order to offer an effective and productive care. In this respect; transcultural nursing term emerges. Besides; as known, health-disease practices and needs of individuals who live in different cultures may be different. In this sense; it is necessary for nurses to respect for others’ cultural beliefs and to deliver nursing care by knowing and paying attention to their cultures because people’s cultural beliefs and practices are very significant in that nurses give a holistic care. Abstract:
The exponential growth of culturally diverse populations in the United States has led to a multicultural patient population while the nursing workforce remains predominantly White. At the project site, managers identified that staff nurses struggled to deliver culturally competent care. The purpose of this project was to improve the cultural competence of registered nurses (RNs) through a transcultural nursing education program. Leininger's transcultural nursing theory guided the project. Sources of evidence used to develop a face-to-face educational program included peer-reviewed journals, credible websites, and the Inventory for Assessing the Process of Cultural Competence Among Healthcare Professionals-R tool. Aggregate pretest and posttest scores were used to determine RNs' competency levels. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software was used for data analysis, and a paired t test was used to determine the impact of the program. Of the 22 participants, 4 (18%) scored within the culturally competent range on the pretest, compared to 17 (77%) on the posttest. These findings were statistically significant (p < 0.000) and demonstrated a positive outcome from the educational project. Key recommendations are to continue this education for other RNs in the facility and at other facilities in the network. The implications of this project for positive social change include raising the cultural competency of nurses, which has the potential to improve patient outcomes.

Ekvall, Klara. "Nursing care for patients with burns in Tanzania." Thesis, Röda Korsets Högskola, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:rkh:diva-86.

Abstract:
Burns are common in low- and middle income countrie ssuch asTarzania and firerelated deaths are numerous in Africa compared to high income countries in Europe. The nurse's primary professional responsibility is to require nursing care to people. Nursing care for burned patients is important and demands knowledge. Nurses in Tanzania experience difficulties in their daily work in terms of heavy workload and lack of material. Transcultural nursing aims to see care, health and illness from a cultural perspective and the goal is to provide competent care to people in different cultures. The purpose of the study was to illuminate how nurses in Tanzania take care of patients with burns. The study was implemented at the hospital Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre in Moshi,Tanzania. A qualitative method was used;participating observations of nine nurses were carried out. The field notes were analyzed by content analysis and gradually two themes appeared; preventing infections and meeting the patient. The conclusion was that nursing care meant collaboration with the relatives, a calm and low stress atmosphere and concems about the patients' integrity. Difficulties experienced in the nurse's daily work were lack of time and material, but despite this the nurses wanted to improve the care of the burned patients in order to reduce the risk of infection. An interesting finding was that normally no contact was created between the nurse and the patient. Overall the lasting impression was that nursing care must be seen and understood in the cultural context.

Full text
Abstract:

Aim The purpose of this literature study was to describe nurses’ experiences of encounters with patients from different cultural backgrounds than their own, and to describe the opportunities and barriers that nurses’ face when caring for these patients.

Method Twelve qualitative studies from different countries were included in this literature study, in which researchers interviewed nurses and presented their problems and experiences. Our study was analyzed by using a qualitative approach.

Findings The study revealed four phenomena that nurses face when caring for patients from different cultural backgrounds; the communication with the patient, encounters with family/relatives, nurses’ experiences of working conditions in cultural encounters and cultural nursing knowledge.

Conclusion Nurses felt that communication was the biggest main obstacle in meetings with patients with different cultural backgrounds. Interpreter, colleagues and relatives were seen as opportunities to avoid the obstacles that arise. Family in patients with different cultural background was very important in nursing care of these patients. Nurses saw education as an opportunity to increase their cultural knowledge and believe that access to an interpreter would facilitate health care.

Abstract:
This paper reviews selected work, published between 1944 and 1995, on the subject of Ayurveda. The aim of the review was to explore the ethnohistory of Ayurveda and the attached concept of health and illness, out of a transcultural perspective. Ayurveda is a medical tradition practiced throughout South Asia.  It is founded upon Sanskrit texts dating back more than two thousand years. Its ancient fundamental health ideas and practices still persists. Ayurveda offers not only a complete different way of understanding health and illness, but also different forms of treatment. The Ayurvedic view of health is synergistic and multifaceted concept of balance and harmony within the organism (mind, body and soul) as well as within the universal system the organism is a part. Disturbance of the harmony on a level, causes sickness. Ayurvedic doctrine emphasizes the importance of promotion of health and prevention of sickness. The key to good health is a regulated daily life. Factors like personal hygien and conduct, work, sleep, rest, diet and physical exercise has to be regulated and individually adjusted. South Asian countries, often has a pluralistic medical system, in which Ayurvedic health care is one option among many. The Ayurvedic medical system is an important provider of modern health care in South Asia.
