Abstract:
ABSTRACT Confidence and competency with medication mathematics is imperative yet challenging for many in higher education with regard to the nursing profession. The researchers seek to understand if there is there a difference between the course grades of baccalaureate nursing students based upon the instructional methods of fully face-to-face as compared to fully online self-directed mathematic instruction. Grounded in a self-efficacy theoretical framework, self-directed learning (SDL) techniques were explored in this research piece as well as valuable faculty feedback as it relates to the SDL module. The results indicated that students were more successful with SDL or online mathematic instruction, in addition faculty scored the students as more confident in post mathematical education.

Abstract:

Mathematical knowledge and skill are needed by all students in their studies and future careers. Students’ perceived relevance of mathematics in their future careers influences their attitude towards learning mathematics. This study explored student and professional nurses' perceived relevance and application of mathematics in the nursing profession. A sample size of 301 nursing students in a University in Ghana and 12 professional nurses participated in the study. Data was collected using a questionnaire and interview and was analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The study revealed that both the professional and the student nurses perceived Statistics, Ratio and Rates, and Percentages as the topics in school mathematics that they find most relevant and applicable to their study and practice of nursing. It is recommended that the senior high school mathematics teachers may need to always share the professional applicability of any topic they teach, by using authentic and real-life situations in various professions.

Abstract:
Introduction: Nursing and mathematics are synonymous, particularly in clinical settings. Numeracy skills have been identified as one of the competency elements for outcome-based education in nursing. Studies have shown that undergraduate nursing students continue to perform poorly on clinically-related numeracy tasks, making errors that betray fundamental misconceptions about the underlying mathematics. These conditions can be eliminated when an effort is made and the effects can be rewarding for nursing students, nursing academics and as well as improving patient care. Aim: This study aimed to address the importance of numeracy skills for undergraduate nursing students’ clinical skill assessment. Method: This study used an expository analysis approach to address the issues of the importance of numeracy skills competency in the clinical skill assessment of undergraduate nursing students. We have analysed the current undergraduate nursing curriculum and clinical skill assessment components. Moreover, we also review the available literature related to numeracy skills competency for nursing students and newly registered nurses. Finding: Numeracy skills are one of the important elements of competencies skills that have been introduced to the current Malaysian undergraduate nursing programme. However, the achievement part of it is still questionable. Evidence has shown that new graduate nurses often lack the numeracy skills needed to enable them to do their jobs safely and effectively in the clinical setting. Among the errors done by the new graduate nurses and nursing students are drug calculation errors and which accounted for 30-40% in the clinical. Conclusion: Numeracy skills competency assessment is vital for undergraduate nursing students who have to make complex calculations and analyse the patient’s situation in their clinical setting. Improving numeracy skills for undergraduate nursing students can reduce medical errors and ultimately improve efficiency in the nursing care towards their patients.

Abstract:
A key component of any nursing course is the ability to confidently, and competently, use basic mathematical skills. Indeed, without such skills they would be unable to work safely and successfully in the profession (McMullan, Jones, and Lea, 2012; Choudhary and Malthus, 2017). Furthermore, many nursing students come on to their courses having not studied any form of formal mathematics for years and are very likely to have some form of maths anxiety (McMullan, Jones, and Lea, 2012). sigma Maths Support at Coventry University have developed a programme, in partnership with the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (HLS), to support these students with their mathematical skills using a variety of small interventions. The interventions require little time and effort to prepare and have proven to be very successful. This article will discuss the methods used, including diagnostic testing, the use of ‘Numbas’, and self-explanation training (as described in Hodds, 2017), alongside the outcomes of the programme.

Abstract:
Background: Assertiveness is a key attribute for successful nursing practice. A professional nurse must be assertive for improving nursing care so it should be emphasized during their academic period. The objective of the study was to find out the assertiveness among nursing students in Kathmandu. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study design with 71 nursing students of Proficiency Certificate Level (PCL) in Manmohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences was conducted between 27th April, 2022 to 27th May 2022. Non-probability sampling technique was used to select the sample. Assertiveness Scale of Begley and Glacken, a self-administered questionnaire was used for data collection which was distributed to the respondents by mail. Data analysis and interpretation was done using descriptive and inferential statistics. Result: The result showed that majority of the respondents (87.3%) had moderate level of assertiveness and very least respondents (4.2%) had high level of assertiveness. Respondents were found to be more assertive who enjoy to start conversations with strangers (3.75±0.61), who are always frank about their feelings (3.57±0.92) and never find difficult to compliment and praise friends (2.97±1.01). However, they were less assertive in trying to avoid conflict (1.45±1.41), never disagree when a friends’ opinion is wrong (1.63±1.00) and are more careful to avoid hurting other people’s feelings (1.24±0.68). There is no significant association between level of assertiveness with sociodemographic variables. Conclusion: The findings of the study conclude that the majority of respondents were less assertive in avoiding conflict, disagreeing to friends’ opinion and careful to avoid hurting other people’s feeling. So, the concerned academic organization should emphasis more on encouraging assertiveness among the nursing students.

Abstract:
Adverse drugs reactions are major public health concern in worldwide. Pharmacovigilance is a complex process of clinical and scientific discipline that ensures the safety of the medication and avoids adverse drug reactions. Poly-pharmacy, poly-physician, co-morbidities, drug administration errors, use of over the counters (OTCs) drugs, lack of awareness about medications are major cause of the reactions. India joined hand with WHO-UPPSALA in 1997 with the aim to improve the safety of drugs and health of the patients. Despite global concern regarding drug safety there is a lack of understanding and knowledge and reporting of Adversed Drug Reactions (ADRs) among health care professionals. Nurses serve as advocates for the health and safety of patients and may play a crucial role in the pharmacovigilance system & avoiding the mitigating the risks to the patient, promoting public health and determining and maintaining the safety of medicines. Nurses need appropriate knowledge and experience in the field of health care setting including early identification, management and reporting of medicine safety issues and should have a combination of pharmacovigilance training and participating in research studies.

Alternative teaching method in dosage calculation to reduce nursing students’ test anxiety and enhance self-concept

Norwegian nursing students must pass a drug calculation test with a flawless performance if they are to qualify as nurses. This requirement is found to increase students’ test anxiety and mathematical low self-conceptual students are highly effected. The aim of the current study is to examine if participating in a special education program benefits students with high test anxiety and low self-concept in the domain of mathematics. The participants were highly involved in both planning and conducting the alternative program which had a practical approach towards both mathematics and drug calculation. We use a mixed methods approach to examine nursing students’ experiences participating in the program, and data are collected by using survey questionnaires, participants’ evaluation and a focus group interview. Ten freshman nursing students participating in the program responded to a questionnaire pre and post intervention, including a written evaluation during the program. Finally a focus group interview was conducted two years after the intervention. The survey data show a significant change in mathematics-self-concept, however, no significant reduction in test anxiety was found, but the qualitative data from the interview suggest a reduction in anxiety and higher mathematical self-concept after participating in the program.

Abstract:
Introduction: Globally, nursing is perceived as a demanding and stressful profession. In recent studies, the psychological well-being of employed nurses has been given considerable attention. Considering that nursing students are the future of the nursing workforce; it is important that we increase our understanding of the importance of resilience in this population. Aim: This study examines turnover intention and burnout among Palestinian nursing students and how resilience and sociodemographic factors affected these outcomes. Methods: The study included 409 nursing students from three major institutions in the West Bank-Palestine. The data was collected using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Burnout scale, as well as key demographic data, including the intention to leave the nursing profession in the future. Results: Participants displayed moderate levels of resilience and burnout, and the analysis revealed a negative correlation between resilience and burnout (r = -0.35). The study findings indicated that almost half of the students were not satisfied with their nursing major and half of them intended to leave the nursing profession in the future. Higher resilience was associated with intention to stay in the nursing profession, male gender, satisfaction with nursing major, employment, living on campus, receiving support from friends and family, and studying a week or more before the exam. While intentions to leave nursing, lack of support from family and friends, higher academic levels lower GPAs, studying an hour or less per day, and studying one day before an exam were all associated with higher burnout. Conclusion: Effective measures should be taken to reduce students’ burnout and turnover intention.

Abstract:
Background: Nursing workload is an important issue in ICU management. However, not much is known about the association between nursing workload and satisfaction of nurses with their workload. Objective: The aim of this study is to assess the association of the objective, time and activity-based nursing workload and the perceived nursing workload with the satisfaction of nurses about their workload on the Intensive Care. Methods: We measured the objective nursing workload with the Nursing Activities Score and the perceived nursing workload measured with the NASA-TLX during 226 shifts in eight different Intensive Cares Units (ICUs). Nurses were asked to rate their satisfaction about the nursing workload during that shift on a scale from 0 (not satisfied at all) till 10 (maximum satisfaction). We used logistic regression models to analyze the association between both the Nursing Activities Score and the NASA-TLX with workload satisfaction (satisfied (>=6) or not (<6)) of nurses about the workload. Results: In our study we showed that a Nursing Activities Score between 73.9 - < 83.7 points per nurse leads to a significant higher chance of a nurse being satisfied about his/her nursing workload (OR = 2.92 (1.01 – 8.45)). An increase of the overall workload with a NASA-TLX score of  27 is leading to a significant higher chance of a nurse being satisfied about the nursing workload (NASA-TLX 27 - <32: OR(CI)=3.26 (1.23 – 8.64); NASA-TLX  32: OR(CI) = 3.04 (1.11-7.98). Analyzing the subcategories of the NASA-TLX showed a significant higher chance of a nurse being satisfied about the workload in case of a high demand in the subcategories ‘mental demand’, ‘physical demand’ and ‘effort’. Conclusion: Our study showed that nurses are most satisfied on their workload when the Nursing Activity Score is around 80, and when the perceived overall workload as measured with the NASA-TLX is high (above 27). Especially a perceived high mental demand, physical demand or effort contributes to a higher chance of the nurse being satisfied. A further increase of the objective or perceived nursing workload to a very high demand or a low objective or perceived nursing workload diminish these positive associations. Managers responsible for capacity planning should take these results into consideration to avoid burn-out and bore- out of ICU nurses.

Abstract:
This study aimed to examine the attitudes of Ghanaian student nurses towards mathematics. A sample of 301 undergraduate nursing students at a university in Ghana, selected through census sampling techniques from the first to the third-year students, participated in the study. Data was collected using a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study revealed that the students’ attitudes towards mathematics are determined by the value they attach to mathematics and their interest in mathematics. At α=0.01, Spearman's rho correlation coefficient of rs = 0.619 was significant. This indicates that the more value the student nurses attach to mathematics learning, the more interest they will likely have in learning the subject. The coefficient of determination (R2=38%), indicates that the students’ value for mathematics accounts for 38% of the variability in their interest in mathematics.

Abstract:
This paper describes an analysis of Danish nursing home soundscapes and the subsequent attempt at implementing incremental interventions aiming to improve the soundscapes. Danish nursing homes are challenged by simultaneously being a home, workplace, and institution. Staff and residents will invariably encounter the conflicting environmental characteristics of these disparate functions, including the sound environment. In 2020, Aarhus Municipality launched a project in collaboration with Aarhus University. In the first phase, the authors conducted a soundscape analysis in five nursing homes in Aarhus. This resulted in a report containing recommendations for improving the nursing home soundscape. In the second phase initiated in 2022, soundscape screenings in all 45 nursing homes in Aarhus was conducted, the purpose of which was the mapping of existing sound sources and how staff and residents perceived them. The results of the screenings confirmed the findings in the report with certain local differences. As of May 2023, various soundscape interventions are being tested in several nursing homes. As this process is still ongoing, this paper will review the results and experiences collected so far. As part of this long-term project, the authors wish to address the gap between soundscape analysis and practical soundscape interventions.

Abstract:
Nursing notes are essential for mental health nursing, and thus they should be included in mental health education for undergraduate nursing students. In clinical settings, It has been observed that fourth-year nursing students commonly omitted critical information from the assessment of mentally ill patients, neglecting their requirements as well as losing valuable learning opportunities. For this reason, an evaluation form has been created and implemented in order to optimise the student’s learning opportunities. The main objectives that motivated the design of this instrument were to support the nursing student’s learning process, promote a systematic record of the mental examination, and apply specific descriptors in the assessment of the patient’s mental state. This evaluation form was designed according to a systematic and standardized registration system, including the main areas that compose mental health assessment. This cost-effective tool has significantly facilitated the student’s learning and training in mental health nursing. During the five-year period in which this instrument has been applied, student records improved in quality, precision, as well as a positive opinion about it from students. Besides, this document has been recently used in the context of distance education and clinical simulation in mental health by assessing patients in simulated situations, with positive outcomes

Abstract:
One of the most critical functions of a nurse is the safe administration of medications. To ensure patient safety, nurses must be competent in medication dosage calculation (MDC) skills. It is imperative that nursing educators discover the most effective teaching methodology to ensure the greatest level of competency in MDC skills. The purpose of this causal-comparative quantitative study was to compare the effects of two teaching methodologies on senior-level nursing students’ completion of program MDC requirements, mathematics self-efficacy, and MDC competency at program end. The sample consisted of 94 senior-level bachelor’s degree nursing students from a southeastern United States university in the spring of 2015. Each participant completed a demographic questionnaire, Mathematics Self-Efficacy Scale (MSES), and MDC competency exam. Participants were assigned to one of two groups based on whether the participants completed MDC education in a stand-alone course or throughout the curriculum through self-learning modules. Chi-square and independent t-test results indicated that there were no statistical differences between the two groups (stand-alone course vs. self-learning modules) and ability to complete program MDC requirements, MSES scores, and MDC competency exam scores at program end. Data analysis using Chi-square and Fisher’s Exact tests indicated a statistically significant, but weak, correlation between MSES scores and MDC competency exam scores. Findings from this study indicate teaching MDC to nursing students using a stand-alone course versus self-learning modules produces the same results in the students’ ability to complete program MDC requirements, mathematics self-efficacy, and MDC competency at program end.

Abstract:
The demand for nursing services is an important concern because nursing care occupies the top position in hospital services, giving rise to a response to the quality of nursing services in hospitals. The responses that emerged included the concept of nursing management and concrete steps in its implementation in a conducive manner. This study aims to analyze the quality of nursing services performed by nurses at Puri Husada Tembilahan Hospital. This research was conducted using a qualitative method with a femomenological design. The results of the study illustrate that the problems identified in the field of nursing consist of problems with the background of nurses' education, employment status, distribution of nurses and the quality of nursing services. The results of the analytical study carried out resulted in confirmation that the problems in the nursing field identified had influenced nurses in carrying out their main duties and functions. Nurses who cannot perform their main duties and functions properly will reduce the quality of nursing services in hospitals. It is recommended for hospital management to conduct a study of the quality of nursing services along with the nurse's background, the status of the nurse's workforce and the distribution of the nurse's workload.

Abstract:
Introduction This article arises from the analysis of care practice as a Nurse, in a sense of continuous improvement. Thus, by understanding the professional history, the paradigms of the profession and the positioning of Nursing in terms of society in today's world, it is possible to envision possible paths for the profession. Objective This article aims to reflect on the historical evolution of Nursing in Portugal and to envision the future of Portuguese Nursing in the light of international influences. Development The historical perspective and the implications in Nursing care practice, Person/Client-Centred Care and the individualisation of the intervention and, finally, Advanced Nursing and Advanced Practice Nursing were addressed. Analysing the historical perspective of Nursing over the centuries, from its abnegated period, through the romantic era, medicine and the technicist phase, we understand some current practices and doubts regarding the perspective of the future. The development of knowledge and practice in Nursing should go through the recognition and advancement of the core competencies of the discipline. Conclusion An approximation between scientific production and care practice is essential for the development of Nursing. Facilitating this process is the development of the Nursing specialties as a master's degree course, promoting not only different practices, but also the critical look and thinking of professionals. In this process, the existence of other sciences – health, social and human sciences, among others – that will promote the development of the Nursing body should not be relegated to second place, but it is also crucial to disseminate scientific production in Nursing, in order to give visibility to the science and practice of the discipline.

Abstract Aim. The aim is to describe and analyse the available studies describing the assigned nursing care and work environment of nurses. Design: Scoping review. Methods. The search was conducted in four scientific databases Ovid Nursing, ProQuest, PubMed, and Scopus. Eleven studies published between years 2000 and 2020 were included in the review. Results. Eleven cross-sectional and correlational studies were analysed to document the prevalence of rationed nursing care in the acute hospital care setting. Studies evaluating rationed nursing care confirm a strong relationship with the workplace nursing environment. Thus, the work environment is among the significant determinants of rationed nursing care. The most commonly used tools include the PIRNCA tool for assessing hidden rationing of care and the PES-NWI tool for monitoring the work environment of nurses. When the work environment is rated as unfavourable, there is a higher rate of rationed nursing care. Conclusions. Rationed nursing care is a phenomenon that is monitored globally, and its assessment is essential in health care delivery. The main reasons for the development of hidden rationing of care include inadequate staffing and facilities. Factors that contribute significantly to the rationed nursing care are based on the work environment - mainly interpersonal relationships and communication, multidisciplinary collaboration.

This article presents a transformative perspective on contemporary nursing, emphasizing unity and interconnectedness in the post-Covid world. Prof. Jean Watson introduces "Unitary Caring Science" as a holistic approach to nursing, rooted in three ethical principles: The Ethic of Belonging, The Ethics of Face, and The Ethics of Hands. These principles guide the paradigm shift in nursing philosophy and practice. Dr. Watson discusses the "Ten Caritas Processes®," a foundational language for understanding and practicing human care. She highlights the importance of "Transpersonal Caring Moments," where nurses' presence and authenticity influence patient experiences. The article aligns this approach with the American Nurses Association's new definition, emphasizing compassion and presence in nursing care, and advocates for a holistic, interconnected nursing approach to uphold human dignity and compassion.

Abstract Introduction. Schizophrenia spectrum disorders are a major challenge for modern psychiatry. Epidemiological data indicate an increasing trend in the prevalence of such disorders, as well as other disorders from the schizophrenia spectrum. In a long-term perspective, this means that highly specialised (both nursing and medical) care, broadly understood community care, and innovative rehabilitation methods able to reduce cognitive and executive deficits will be necessary. Aim. The aim of this paper is to propose the use of the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP®) in the process of diagnosing and planning care for patients with schizophrenia. Material and method. The paper is based on the individual case study method and for the analysis of the obtained data the following research techniques were used: interview, observation, measurement, documentation analysis. The research tools: Individual Nursing Care Card, Mental Health Assessment Card, SAD PERSONS Scale for Suicide Risk Assessment, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and C-HOBIC Fatigue Assessment Scale. Results. The collected data allow the formulation of 15 diagnoses in accordance with ICNP®. For the three selected diagnoses, a nursing care plan was drawn up, which included, depending on the patient’s needs, nursing interventions. Conclusions. ICNP® as a classification of nursing diagnoses allows the drafting of nursing diagnoses related to the mental state of the subject of care; various interventions provide a large selection of them.

Abstract:
Evidence of the utilization of non-conventional therapeutic modalities by nurses and the outcomes for clients was scarce in Portugal in 2011, when one of the author’s primary study took place (Santos, 2011). Data analysis did not address the deep reasons why nurses used complementary/alternative therapies. Objectives: Thus, a new research question: What are nurse’s motivations to integrate non-conventional therapeutic modalities in their practice? Method: Interview transcripts and observation records of fifteen nurses, working in Portuguese hospitals, from all types of units of care; and ten nurses and seventeen patients at the pain unit of the Cancer Oncology Institute, was analyzed. Secondary qualitative analysis, using analytic expansion (Thorn, 2013), was conducted. Simplified theoretical model (Burtson and Stichler, 2010) was used as Theoretical Framework. Results: Three themes were identified: Nursing care values; Knowledge base; Acting according to values and knowledge base. There is also evidence of the impact of promoters (compassion satisfaction and nurse job satisfaction) of nurse caring. Discussion: The meanings of action and the need for a trusting relationship are key elements of nursing care. Nurses are motivated to care by the satisfaction they derive from caregiving, as Burston & Strichler (2010) state. Interaction opportunities, praise and recognition, and compassion satisfaction, all of them are promoter’s factors of nursing job satisfaction. Further research is needed to confirm the impact of care promoters in different cultures and measure the factors of nursing care, to support changes in nursing practice.

Clinical practices, which have an important place in nursing education, are also a source of stress for the student. To examine the clinical stress levels of senior nursing students in the operating room and surgical clinics. It was descriptive and cross-sectional study and conducted at a university in Turkey, in 2019-2020. In the study, 89 of the senior nursing students took part in the operating room and 81 in the surgical clinics. Quantitative data were collected by sociodemographic clinical characteristics form and the Pagana Clinical Stress Questionnaire. The operating room stress score of the senior nursing students was 27.41±8.75. According to the clinics, there was a significant difference between the clinical stress score of the first day. The highest clinical stress score belonged to the students who practiced in the neurosurgery clinic on the first day and in the ED on the last day. The clinical stress level of students on the last day was higher than the first day. We found that the senior nursing students' stress levels were low on the surgical clinics and the OR. The findings showed that the clinical stress level experienced by the students at the end of their surgical clinical practices was higher than the first day. When planning the clinical placements of nursing students, planning according to the clinics they have applied before and determining the practice goals according to the clinics that students will apply for the first time can reduce the clinical stress of students.

Abstract:
As many countries across the globe are fraught with challenges brought by aging populations, the issue of how the quality of the elderly's living environment and their health status are connected has captured widespread public attention. Previous studies have shown that the acoustic environment is closely associated with our health. The existing research on the acoustic environment of nursing institutions mainly focused on indoor environments, while this study aims to explore the restorative effects of the soundscape in the outdoor environment of nursing homes on the elderly. In the experiment, the outdoor audio-visual environment of the nursing home was reproduced in a laboratory environment using virtual reality technology. Subjects are provided with 360-degree visual information via a head-mounted display (HMD) and audio information with head-tracking technology through headphone-based 3D spatialized sound using first-order ambisonics (FOA). A within-subjects design was used to measure changes in participants 'mood levels, attention capacity, physiological and psychological responses, and perceived restorativeness (N=29). By comparing the data from audiovisual experiments and pure visual experiments, the restorative effects of soundscapes on the elderly in three typical outdoor scenarios of nursing homes were analyzed.

As contemporary society evolves, the technological revolution increasingly requires higher education institutions to adopt innovative strategies instead of traditional teaching. Improving the training of health professions in innovative teaching strategies would help prepare future nurses for professionalization. Therefore, the flipped classroom is one of the active educational approaches that has been shown to be effective on nursing students’ outcomes and motivation. Our study, spread over two years from 2018 to 2020, is a quantitative experimental pilot study, which aims to examine the effect of the flipped classroom on nursing students’ learning and motivation outcomes in health education of undergraduate nursing students of the ‘Higher Institute of Nursing Professions and Health Techniques’ (ISPITS). We used two tests, knowledge test and motivation test. The control group consisted of 15 students against 17 students from the experimental group. The experiment lasted three months. Our results showed a statistically highly significant (p<0.0001) increase (p<0.0001) in the grades and motivation levels of students in the experimental group. We point out that our experience coincided with the COVIC-19 pandemic which forced distance learning. Abstract Introduction. Nursing education combined with medical simulation is currently a modern method of education, which, especially in the era of the SARS-COV-2 pandemic, is an essential form of preparing the student for professional tasks. Aim. The aim of the study was to find out the opinions of nursing students about the classes conducted in the Medical Simulation Center. Material and methods. A total of 186 undergraduate nursing students participated in the survey. It was conducted via the Internet. We used the method of diagnostic survey; surveying technique and the tool was the original questionnaire. The study was anonymous and voluntary and was conducted from February to May 2021. It is assumed that any relationship is statistically significant when p≤0.05. Results and conclusions. According to the respondents, medical simulation prepares to acquire practical skills, also consolidates theoretical knowledge, prepares to broaden social competence. For nursing students, its disadvantage is the lack of contact with the patient. Education realized with the use of medical simulation is an effective method of learning. Nursing students prefer to take classes in high fidelity rooms and with standardized patients because they are most similar to real life conditions.
