Abstract:
It is important to understand the physiological acclimatization process in order to provide the favorable growing conditions, to increase the survival rate and to produce vigorous seedlings for field planting for better establishment. These aspects assume significance because the embryo culture technique is used for germplasm collection in coconut. The zygotic embryos from eight month old selfed nuts from West Coast Tall (WCT) cultivar of coconut were collected for embryo culture. The field planted seedlings produced by embryo culture and those raised from nursery were compared for photosynthetic activity under field grown conditions. Photosynthetic and water relation parameters were studied in the embryo cultured plantlets at different stages of acclimatization under green net house conditions. The photosynthetic rate increased gradually during acclimation with maximum rate atfour months after transfer to pots (under 50% shade; stage 4). The embryo cultured plantlets had higher photosynthetic rates compared to the nursery raised plants under field conditions. Transpiration rate increased with stage during acclimation. Embryo cultured plants had low transpiration rate as compared to the nursery raised plants. Consequently embrvo cultured plants had higher WUE (A/E). The WUE increased during acclimation. The Fv/Fm ratio increased gradually from 0.69 to 0.72 till stage 4. The field‑grown embryo culture plants had higher Fv/Fm compared to the nursery raised plant. This increase in Fv/Fm during acclimation indicated the increase in photochemical activity and photosystem II electron transport efficiency. The study indicated increase in photosystem efficiency and carbon assimilation efficiency of embryo cultured plantlets of coconut during acclimatization.

Abstract:
As an important part of children’s literature, nursery rhymes are the earliest literary styles that children are exposed to after they are born. They can reflect objective things, living customs and national culture. Through the comparison of animal images in Chinese and English classic nursery rhymes, this paper concludes that there are cultural differences in animal images in nursery rhymes. Some animal images have similar cultural connotations in Chinese culture and English culture, while some animal images have different cultural connotations.

Pest attack, disease and soil fatigue have always been a great problem in fig (Ficus carica L.) nursery tree production, especially when traditional methods that use soil culture are applied. Therefore, as an alternative method, substrate culture could be a sustainable and favorable propagation method for growing healthy nursery fig trees of high quality. No information is available on substrate use and its effect on nursery fig tree production. The present study was aimed to define a favorable substrate to cultivate nursery fig trees in substrate culture, and to examine the effects of substrates on morphological and biochemical characteristics of the fig trees by growing plants in a high-tunnel. Fig cv. "Sarilop" (Calimyrna) cuttings were used in this trial as plant material. Three growth media based on perlite (100%), peat (50%) + perlite (50%), and fine sawdust (100%) were tested using soil as a control. Plants were grown in trough culture from the day of planting cuttings up to the uproot point of fig nursery trees, during eight months, and they were not transplanted into another medium during the growing period. To observe the effect of substrates on the nursery fig trees, some morphological and biochemical characteristics were determined. The use of peat + perlite and perlite led to increased plant growth and quality of fig nursery trees grown in high-tunnel.

The increasingly common use of English nursery rhymes intertextually has impacted upon their transfer into target cultures: entire nursery rhymes, fragments and characters are now found in translational situations. Most of these situations are adaptations of nursery rhymes into other media; and one of the most evident is the use of nursery rhyme characters found in a different context, frequently portrayed visually. Through a reception case study with Spanish students, this report intends to address issues about the relevance of intertextuality in translation, as well as the child’s assumptions in relation to discourse and visual input. Through a qualitative mixed-method study, children worked with nursery rhymes without visual prompts as well as intertextually presented nursery rhyme characters, and offered insight into acquired expectations and anticipations. Through the revision of the results, visual adaptation proves to contribute to children’s acculturation and assumptions, reducing the openness to foreignization. Key words: adaptation, intertextuality, nursery rhymes, translation, acculturation ResumenEl uso cada vez más común de las nursery rhymes inglesas de forma intertextual tiene un impacto sobre su transferencia a la cultura meta: rimas enteras, fragmentos o personajes se encuentran ahora en situaciones de traducción. Muchas de estas situaciones son adaptaciones de nursery rhymes a otros medios; y una de las más evidentes es el uso de personajes de nursery rhymes en un contexto diferente, normalmente con un apoyo visual. A través de un estudio de recepción con estudiantes españoles de edades comprendidas entre 12 y 14 años, este artículo pretende ofrecer respuestas sobre la relevancia de la intertextualidad en la traducción, además de las presuposiciones en relación al discurso y a los mensajes visuales. A través de un estudio de métodos mixtos, un grupo de participantes trabajó con nursery rhymes sin apoyo visual y con personajes de nursery rhymes presentados de forma intertextual y con apoyo visual. El estudio ofrece información sobre las expectativas adquiridas y los patrones discursivos de los niños y adolescentes. En la revisión de los resultados, se demuestra que la adaptación visual influye en la aculturación y las presuposiciones de los niños partiendo de un modelo hegemónico, y reduce su capacidad de extranjerización en transferencias culturales. Moltes d’aquestes situacions són adaptacions de nursery rhymes a d’altre mitjans i una de les més evidents és l’ús de personatges de de nursery rhymes en un context diferent, normalment amb un suport visual. A través d’un estudi de recepció amb estudiants espanyols d’edats compreses entre 12 i 14 anys, aquest article pretén oferir respostes sobre la rellevància de la intertextualitat en la traducció, a més de les pressuposicions en relació al discurs i als missatges visuals. Hosta ×hybrid Tratt. `Blue Cadet' and Hosta tokudama Tratt. `Newberry Gold' were micropropagated in shaken liquid culture and on agar media, in conventional vessels and vessels modified for ventilation in vitro. Acclimatization under intermittent mist and growth in an outdoor nursery during the late spring and summer were monitored by dry weight analysis of sample plants every 4 days for a 60-day period (ex vitro growth). Results for `Newberry Gold' were 1) in vitro shoot growth was greater in liquid than agar culture, regardless of vessel; 2) shoots from agar or liquid culture grew at similar rates ex vitro; 3) ex vitro root growth was greater for liquid than agar cultured plants, regardless of vessel type. Results for `Blue Cadet' were 1) in vitro and ex vitro shoot growth was greater in liquid than agar culture regardless of vessel type and 2) ex vitro root growth was greatest for liquid cultured plants from conventional vessels. Ventilated vessels were generally beneficial for agar but not liquid culture. Benefits of liquid culture for micropropagation of Hosta found in vitro are at least maintained and sometimes enhanced during ex vitro growth in the mist bed and nursery.

A manual for certified nursery and landscape professionals has been developed by the University of Minnesota Extension Service in conjunction with the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association (MNLA). The purpose of the certification manual is to facilitate the improvement of basic skills and knowledge of nursery and landscape professionals, to further the education and training of competent nursery and landscape professionals, and to serve as a training and reference manual for most levels of nursery and landscape culture and management. The manual consists of thirty-four chapters covering all aspects of woody plant biology and culture: abiotic and biotic plant stress; landscape design; installation and maintenance; plant marketing, merchandising and sales; and laws, regulations and safety concerns for nursery, landscape and garden center personnel. A concise glossary, the American Standard For Nursery Stock, and an illustrated nursery catalog are also included in the manual. The manual is an important part of the MNLA Certification Program whose purpose is to improve the skills, knowledge and, expertise of nursery and landscape professionals. The Certification Program also strives for faster recognition and promotion of professionalism within the industry and to the general public.

Abstract:
Evaluation of rice for resistance to rice blast disease caused by Pyricularia grisea usually is conducted in upland (nonflooded) disease nurseries, although all commercial U.S. rice is produced under flood irrigation. Upland rice is more susceptible to leaf blast than is flooded rice, and the magnitude of this differential susceptibility can vary among cultivars. This 2-year study was undertaken to determine (i) the relationship between rates of disease development (slow-blasting) in upland and flooded rice and (ii) the value to a rice breeding program of establishing a flooded blast nursery, a facility far more difficult to manage than an upland nursery. Among 200 rice lines compared for leaf blast susceptibility under upland and flooded cultures, only 7 were rated as slightly more resistant under upland culture and 136 rated more resistant under flooded culture. Disease ratings under upland and flooded cultures were highly correlated (R = 0.819). Among 14 preselected cultivars over 2 years, disease development curves under upland and flooded cultures were highly correlated (R = 0.990). The cultivars with intermediate susceptibility under upland culture appeared to benefit most from flooded culture. Upland culture provided more opportunities to assess slow-blasting than did flooded culture, since many lines that produced susceptible-type lesions in upland culture failed to do so under flooded culture. It was concluded that adequate information on comparative leaf blast resistance among rice lines was attainable from upland blast nurseries and that routine evaluation of rice breeding lines for blast resistance in flooded nurseries was not necessary.

Na atualidade, a esquizofrenia é um dos principais problemas de saúde pública e afeta, além dos pacientes, os seus familiares, causando inúmeros prejuízos funcionais e sociais. A esquizofrenia é definida como uma doença que afeta a zona central do eu e altera toda a estrutura vivencial da pessoa. O esquizofrênico representa o estereótipo do louco, um indivíduo que produz grande estranheza social devido ao seu desprezo para com a realidade reconhecida. Cada grupo social define a esquizofrenia de acordo com seus conhecimentos, crenças e ações específicas. A família tem um lugar e função central na vida dos portadores de esquizofrenia. A confirmação do diagnóstico e o início da doença constituem alguns dos fatores que geram inúmeras mudanças no contexto familiar. Assim, constituiu-se objeto deste estudo apreender o sentido dado pela família acerca do processo de adoecimento do portador de esquizofrenia e os mecanismos para lidar com a doença. Trata-se de um estudo de caso etnográfico, fundamentado no referencial da teoria sistêmica familiar e da antropologia médica, realizado no período de agosto a dezembro de 2005. Participaram do estudo uma família composta por pai, mãe, cinco filhos, dos quais quatro são portadores de esquizofrenia, em seguimento no Núcleo de Saúde Mental do Centro de Saúde Escola da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto da Universidade de São Paulo. Os dados foram obtidos por meio da observação, análise dos prontuários, registros no diário de campo e entrevistas gravadas realizadas com a família, em sua maioria, no domicílio. Para a apresentação dos dados utilizamos o genograma, história familiar, análise do sistema familiar e descrição das categorias obtidas nas entrevistas. A partir da construção do genograma, pode-se conhecer a estrutura interna da família. A análise do sistema familiar permitiu descrever além da estrutura, seu funcionamento e desenvolvimento. As entrevistas foram transcritas e submetidas a uma análise de conteúdo latente. A análise das entrevistas permitiu identificar sete categorias temáticas relacionadas ao sentido dado ao processo de adoecimento e aos mecanismos de enfrentamento da família. As categorias referem-se às representações sobre o normal e o patológico, as representações do termo esquizofrenia, as explicações para a doença, o impacto relacionado ao sofrimento, à sobrecarga, ao isolamento social e às tarefas da cuidadora, às modificações no relacionamento familiar, o tratamento e a cura. Para a família em estudo, o adoecimento dos filhos causou um rompimento em sua trajetória de vida. O impacto da esquizofrenia foi revelado pelos familiares mediante a manifestação de sentimentos de tristeza, isolamento social e sobrecarga. Os resultados nos levam a considerar que a assistência ao doente mental constitui um desafio para os profissionais de saúde. Torna-se necessário e urgente incluir a família como unidade de cuidado, além de garantir a manutenção do tratamento farmacológico e a reabilitação psicossocial.
On the present days, schizophrenia is one of the most important problems on public health which affects not only the patients, but also their families, causing many functional and social losses. Schizophrenia is defined as an illness that affects the id central zone and changes all person’s living structure. The schizophrenic illrepresents the stereotype of the crazy one, an individual who causes huge social oddness due to his/her despisal to the known reality. Each social group defines schizophrenia according to their knowledge, beliefs and specific actions. Family has a place and a central function on the life of the schizophrenic ill. The diagnostic confirmation and the illness beginning are some of the events that create a number of changes on the family context. Therefore, the objective of this study is learning both the sense given by the family to the illness development process and the facing mechanisms to deal with schizophrenia. This is an ethnographic case study based on the reference of the family systemic theory and medical anthropology, conducted during August through December of 2005. A family composed by father, mother and five kids, four of which are schizophrenic, being followed at the Núcleo de Saúde Mental do Centro de Saúde Escola da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto da Universidade de São Paulo. Data were obtained by observation, review of medical registry, camp diary notes and recorded interviews carried out with the family what, mostly happened at their home. A genogram, family history, family system analysis and description of categories from the interviews were used to present the data. From the building of the genogram, one can know the family’s internal structure. The family system analysis allowed describing not only the structure, but the function and development. The interviews were transcribed and submitted to a latent content analysis . The interview analysis allowed pointing seven thematic categories related to the sense given to the illness process and the facing mechanisms used by the family. The categories refer to representation about what is normal and pathologic, representations of the term schizophrenia, explanations to the disease, the impact on suffering, overload, social isolation and tasks for the care taker, changes in family, the treatment and cure. For the studied family, the children illness has caused a break up to their life way. The impact of schizophrenia was shown by the family members by manifesting feelings of sadness, social isolation and overload. The results lead us to thinking that the assistance to the mentally ill brings a challenge to health care professionals. To include the family as a care unit, besides assuring the pharmacology treatment and psycho-social rehabilitation, becomes necessary and urgent.

Abstract:
Sustainable landscaping includes utilization of plants requiring few inputs. We chose four species showing potential for use in arid landscapes: Purshia mexicana, Shepherdia argentea, Shepherdia rotundifolia, and Alnus maritima. We sowed seeds of S. rotundifolia, S. argentea and P. mexicana in three substrates with various water-holding properties due to differing amounts of organic matter (OM). S. rotundifolia germination was maximized in a calcined clay (66.2%) containing no OM and had low germination (12.7 - 21.8%) in the other substrates. S. argentea germination (42.3 to 53.7%) was similar in all substrates. Poor seed quality of P. mexicana resulted in inconclusive results. Our results suggest that germination of some species is enhanced by substrates with excellent drainage properties. We also investigated effects of different rates of controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) on symbiotic nodule formation in seaside alder. We found that lower than prescribed rates of CRF enhanced nodulation without compromising nitrogen status.

This study presents the effects of nano/micro bubble (MB) aeration on Litopenaeus vannamei (whiteleg shrimp) for 30 days of nursery stage. Similar studies were carried out using conventional aquarium air stones that produce larger air bubbles (LB) as a point of reference. The water quality parameters: dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature, ammonia (TAN), nitrite, nitrate, and settleable solids (SS) were recorded throughout the culture days. The shrimp growth parameters in terms of body weight and length, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and survival rate for 30 days of culture were compared. The results showed that microbubble aeration significantly improved the DO of the water, accelerated TAN to nitrate conversion and yielded a higher amount of biofloc than the LB system. Despite the microbubble considerably raising the temperature and lowering the pH, the water quality parameters of MB aeration remained consistent and within the acceptable range. The growth of shrimps in the MB aeration system was significantly larger (increased by 34%) and had achieved a lower FCR value (reduced by 26%) in comparison to that of the LB aeration system. This study found that MB aeration promotes the production of biofloc and the growth of L. vannamei.

Abstract:
New breeding samples of the Phacelia tanacetifolia species have been studied. The yield of seeds in sectional samples changed from 16 g/m2 to 37 g/m2. In 30 % of the samples, the indicator is significantly 21.4–32.1 % inferior to the standard, in 30 % of the samples by 25.0–32.1 % higher than the standard, and in 40 % of the samples was at the level of the standard. The yield of the dry mass of plants in collection samples changed from 140 g/m2 to 205 g/m2. According to the complex of household-useful features, selection samples 02/18, 03/18, 07/18 and 16/18 stood out in the nursery. It is planned to include them in the breeding program to create new varieties with high indicators of seed and feed productivity for the Central Black Earth region.

The major bottlenecks in rearing the highly priced gastropod abalone (Haliotis spp.) are the slow growth rate and the high mortality during the first 8 to 12 weeks following metamorphosis and settling. The most likely reason flor these problems is related to nutritional deficiencies in the diatom diet on which the post larvae (PL) feed almost exclusively in captivity. Higher survival and improved growth rate will reduce the considerable expense of hatchery-nursery resisdence time and thereflore the production costs. BARD supported our research for one year only and the support was given to us in order to prove that "(1) Abalone PL feed on encapsulated diatoms, and (2) heterotrophic diatoms can be mass produced." In the course of this year we have developed a novel nutrient delivery system specifically designed to enhance growth and survival of post-larval abalone. This approach is based on the sodium-alginate encapsulation of heterotrophically grown diatoms or diatom extracts, including appetite-stimulating factors. Diatom species that attract the PL and promote the highest growth and survival have been identified. These were also tested by incorporating them (either intact cells or as cell extracts) into a sodium-alginate matrix while comparing the growth to that achieved when using diatoms (singel sp. or as a mixture). A number of potential chemoattractants to act as appetite-stimulating factors for abalone PL have been tested. Preliminary results show that the incorporation of the amino acid methionine at a level of 10-3M to the sodim alginate matrix leads to a marked enhancement of growth. The results ol these studies provided basic knowledge on the growth of abalone and showed that it is possible to obtain, on a regular basis, survival rates exceeding 10% for this stage. Prior to this study the survival rates ranged between 2-4%, less than half of the values achieved today. Several diatom species originated from the National Center for Mariculture (Nitzchia laevis, Navicula lenzi, Amphora T3, and Navicula tennerima) and Cylindrotheca fusiformis (2083, 2084, 2085, 2086 and 2087 UTEX strains, Austin TX) were tested for heterotrophic growth. Axenic colonies were initially obtained and following intensive selection cycles and mutagenesis treatments, Amphora T3, Navicula tennerima and Cylindrotheca fusiformis (2083 UTEX strain) were capable of growing under heterotrophic conditions and to sustain highly enriched mediums. A highly efficient selection procedure as well as cost effective matrix of media components were developed and optimized. Glucose was identified as the best carbon source for all diatom strains. Doubling times ranging from 20-40 h were observed, and stable heterotroph cultures at a densities range of 103-104 were achieved. Although current growth rates are not yet sufficient for full economical fermentation, we estimate that further selections and mutagenesis treatments cycles should result in much faster growing colonies suitable for a fermentor scale-up. As rightfully pointed out by one of the reviewers, "There would be no point in assessing the optimum levels of dietary inclusions into micro-capsules, if the post-larvae cannot be induced to consume those capsules in the first place." We believe that the results of the first year of research provide a foundationfor the continuation of this research following the objectives put forth in the original proposal. Future work should concentrate on the optimization of incorporation of intact cells and cell extracts of the developed heterotrophic strains in the alginate matrix, as well as improving this delivery system by including liposomes and chemoattractants to ensure food consumption and enhanced growth.
