Abstract:
Nurses are an integral part of the interdisciplinary team caring for patients with HIV/AIDS. Since the start of the epidemic nurses have provided care across the healthcare spectrum, serving as care coordinators, clinical nurse specialists, and nurse practitioners. To competently care for people with HIV or AIDS, nurses have to provide care that is advanced and specialized. Nurses working in the field of HIV or AIDS care require advanced knowledge of virology and infectious disease to address the clinical needs of persons with HIV-related illness. This chapter describes the historical engagement of nurses in the epidemic and the nursing strategies that support interprofessional work. It addresses the key aspects of nursing care of the HIV-infected adult throughout the spectrum of HIV illness. The chapter focuses on the nurse’s role in minimizing risk, preventing HIV transmission, caring for persons with HIV, helping individuals to cope with illness, and negotiating the healthcare system.

Abstract:
Advances in surgery have been combined with innovation in anaesthesia techniques. Chapter 3 highlights the increasingly flexible models of surgical care delivery and the role of the nurse in these care settings. Preparation prior to surgery is increasingly being delivered by nurses in the pre-operative phase of care. The knowledge requirements of the nurse in this field are complex, involving a greater understanding of applied physiology and pharmacology, pre-operative testing methods, and assessment modalities. This chapter guides the nurse in the assessment process, choice of diagnostic tests, and preparation of the patient physically and psychologically for surgery.

Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Surgical Nursing is aimed at nurses who care for patients before and after surgery on the main ward areas of a surgical facility. The care needs of surgical patients are core to the role of the nurse and have undergone significant specialization, with the increasing technological and clinical advances in surgery. In addition, the role of the nurse in these areas has changed markedly, undertaking more procedures as well as aspects of assessment, investigation, and treatment as part of the multidisciplinary team. The Oxford Handbook of Surgical Nursing provides a guide relating to all the core elements of surgical care.

Abstract:
At each point across the disease spectrum, the MS nurse plays a pivotal role in the symptom management and comprehensive care of patients with multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis most often affects young adults in the prime of life, derailing and interrupting goals and plans for the future. Whereas a neurologist might look at the disease burden of the brain, the MS nurse looks at the burden on a patient’s life. This nursing approach enables the MS nurse to help patients adjust and adapt to changes and symptoms as disease progression occurs and to empower them to live with the highest quality of life possible. As patients adjust to major life changes or advancing levels of disability, MS nurses can offer support and instill a sense of hope. This support is also important in promoting empowerment and wellness for persons with MS.
