Abstract:
AbstractThe study of everyday numeric thinking in adults directs our attention to several aspects of number cognition that have received almost no attention in the experimental cognitive science literature, namely the influences of socially situated artifact use on numeric processing. The current studies explore numeral recognition and conceptualisation processes in business people who engage in different types of numeracy practices; orally based numeracy practices which involve very little use of written records compared to paper-based numeracy practices. Ethnographic observations of Lebanese business people were conducted to gain a detailed understanding of the socio-cognitive demands in orally-based paperless and paper-based business settings. These observations were in turn used to design experimental reaction time studies which investigated currency based numeral recognition and conceptualisation processes. The results of the numeral recognition and priming studies clearly illustrate that the use of artifacts in everyday numeracy practices influences numeral recognition and conceptualisation in a way that suggests tight linkages between the visio-spatial processes involve in recognizing numerals embedded in cultural artifacts and the semantically based processes involved in the conception of these numerals. The relevance of the current findings for the main models of adult numeric cognition and for research on everyday numeracy will be discussed.

Abstract:
People often laugh about being “no good at math.” Unrecognized, however, is that about one-third of American adults are likely too innumerate to operate effectively in financial and health environments. Two numeric competencies conceivably matter—objective numeracy (ability to “run the numbers” correctly; like literacy but with numbers) and numeric self-efficacy (confidence that provides engagement and persistence in numeric tasks). We reasoned, however, that attaining objective numeracy’s benefits should depend on numeric confidence. Specifically, among the more objectively numerate, having more numeric confidence (vs. less) should lead to better outcomes because they persist in numeric tasks and have the skills to support numeric success. Among the less objectively numerate, however, having more (vs. less) numeric confidence should hurt outcomes, as they also persist, but make unrecognized mistakes. Two studies were designed to test the generalizability of this hypothesized interaction. We report secondary analysis of financial outcomes in a diverse US dataset and primary analysis of disease activity among systemic lupus erythematosus patients. In both domains, best outcomes appeared to require numeric calculation skills and the persistence of numeric confidence. “Mismatched” individuals (high ability/low confidence or low ability/high confidence) experienced the worst outcomes. For example, among the most numerate patients, only 7% of the more numerically confident had predicted disease activity indicative of needing further treatment compared with 31% of high-numeracy/low-confidence patients and 44% of low-numeracy/high-confidence patients. Our work underscores that having 1 of these competencies (objective numeracy or numeric self-efficacy) does not guarantee superior outcomes.

Abstract:
Objective numeracy, the ability to understand and use mathematical concepts, has been related to superior decisions and life outcomes. Unknown is whether it relates to greater satisfaction in life. We investigated numeracy’s relations with income satisfaction and overall life satisfaction in a diverse sample of 5,525 American adults. First, more numerate individuals had higher incomes; for every one point higher on the eight-item numeracy test, individuals reported $4,062 more in annual income, controlling for education and verbal intelligence. Combined, numeracy, education, and verbal intelligence explained 25% of the variance in income while Big-5 personality traits explained less than 4%. Further, the higher incomes associated with greater numeracy were related to more positive life evaluations (income and life satisfaction). Second, extant research also has indicated that the highly numerate compare numbers more than the less numerate. Consistent with numeracy-related income comparisons, numeracy moderated the relation between income and life evaluations, meaning that the same income was valued differently by those better and worse at math. Specifically, among those with lower incomes, the highly numerate were less satisfied than the less numerate; this effect reversed among those with higher incomes as if the highly numerate were aware of and made comparisons to others’ incomes. Further, no clear income satiation point was seen among those highest in numeracy, and satiation among the least numerate appeared to occur at a point below $50,000. Third, both education and verbal intelligence related to income evaluations in similar ways, and numeracy’s relations held when controlling for these other relations. Although causal claims cannot be made from cross-sectional data, these novel results indicate that numeracy may be an important factor underlying life evaluations and especially for evaluations concerning numbers such as incomes. Finally, this study adds to our understanding of education and intelligence effects in life satisfaction and happiness.

Abstract:
AbstractDonation requests often convey numerical information about the people in need. In two studies we investigated the effects of numeracy and presentation format on the underlying affective and cognitive mechanisms of donation decisions. In Study 1, participants were presented with information about a victim in need, either in a frequency format or in a percentage format. In Study 2, we manipulated the identifiability and number of target victims. Our results demonstrate that donations of individuals lower in numeracy were more susceptible to changes in numeric presentation format than those higher in numeracy. Importantly, the underlying mechanisms for donations differed by numeracy. Whereas the mental image of the victim influenced donation decisions of less numerate people only, the estimated impact of a donation was positively correlated with donation amounts for both more and less numerate individuals.

Abstract:
Park and Brannon (2013, https://doi.org/10.1177/0956797613482944) found that practicing non-symbolic approximate arithmetic increased performance on an objective numeracy task, specifically symbolic arithmetic. Manipulating objective numeracy would be useful for many researchers, particularly those who wish to investigate causal effects of objective numeracy on performance. Objective numeracy has been linked to performance in multiple areas, such as judgment-and-decision-making (JDM) competence, but most existing studies are correlational. Here, we expanded upon Park and Brannon’s method to experimentally manipulate objective numeracy and we investigated whether numeracy’s link with JDM performance was causal. Experimental participants drawn from a diverse internet sample trained on approximate-arithmetic tasks whereas active control participants trained on a spatial working-memory task. Numeracy training followed a 2 × 2 design: Experimental participants quickly estimated the sum of OR difference between presented numeric stimuli, using symbolic numbers (i.e., Arabic numbers) OR non-symbolic numeric stimuli (i.e., dot arrays). We partially replicated Park and Brannon’s findings: The numeracy training improved objective-numeracy performance more than control training, but this improvement was evidenced by performance on the Objective Numeracy Scale, not the symbolic arithmetic task. Subsequently, we found that experimental participants also perceived risks more consistently than active control participants, and this risk-consistency benefit was mediated by objective numeracy. These results provide the first known experimental evidence of a causal link between objective numeracy and the consistency of risk judgments.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: Numeracy, defined as the ability to handle basic probability and numerical concepts including computation, estimation, logic, and problem solving, is an under-recognized component of health literacy. Numeracy has been shown to influence performance of health tasks in non-hemophilia populations. Little is known about numeracy in the hemophilia population. Since hemophilia treatment requires understanding of numerical concepts to manage factor replacement, it is likely that numeracy also influences performance of health tasks by patients with hemophilia. A greater understanding of numeracy status and the characteristics influencing numeracy in the hemophilia population may allow healthcare providers to better influence health task performance. The objective of this study is to explore numeracy in the hemophilia population using two different tests of numeracy and to evaluate characteristics that are associated with low numeracy. Methods: Using a cross-sectional design, adults with moderate or severe hemophilia A or B who spoke and read English were enrolled at their annual visit at the Emory/Children's Health Care of Atlanta Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC). Numeracy was measured using the validated Schwartz Woloshin (SW) test requiring answers in words and the unvalidated stick figure test requiring answers using images. Subjects were considered numerate with the SW numeracy test if all three questions were answered correctly or with the stick figure numeracy test if all four questions were answered correctly. Demographic and socioeconomic characteristics collected included age, race, ethnicity, household income (more or less than $50,000), level of education completed (more or less than completion of college), and duration of time followed at this HTC. Clinical information including type and severity of hemophilia, history of viral infections, history of depression, and use of chronic medication were abstracted from the medical records. Descriptive statistics of each variable and bivariate associations between numerate status and each dependent variable were calculated. Multivariable modeling using logistic regression was performed using the validated SW numeracy test as the dependent variable. Results: Of 91 enrolled participants with complete data, all were men. Most had hemophilia A [n=82 (90%)] and severe disease [69 (76%)]. Median age was 34 years [interquartile range (IQR) 18]. Sixty-three (69%) were Caucasian; 5 (6%) were Hispanic; 55 (61%) reported income of <$50,000; 33 (36%) had received an undergraduate degree or higher. Median duration of time followed at the HTC was 17.0 years [IQR 18]. Twenty-four (26%) were HIV positive; 54 (59%) were HCV positive; and 19 (21%) had history of depression. Forty-one (45%) used at least one chronic medication other than factor replacement. Using the SW numeracy test, there were 22 (24%) participants who were numerate. Using the stick figure numeracy test, 60 (66%) were numerate. Only 20 (22%) of all the participants answered all seven questions correctly; two participants (2%) were numerate on the SW test but not on the stick figure test; 40 participants (44%) were numerate on the stick figure numeracy test but not on the SW test; 29 (32%) were not numerate on either test. On bivariable analysis, SW numeracy was associated with higher education (p<0.01), higher income (p=0.035), and the use of chronic medication (p=0.048). On multivariable analysis, after adjusting for age, race, and ethnicity, SW numeracy was associated with higher education (OR 6.21, 95% CI = 1.95-19.76), use of chronic medication (OR 4.31, 95% CI = 1.29-14.34), and less time followed at the HTC (OR 0.92, 95% CI = 0.86-0.97). Conclusion: Among patients with hemophilia, a significant proportion of patients were not numerate. Patients with less than a college education were more likely to not be numerate. Accordingly, many patients with less than a college education may struggle to understand basic numeracy concepts and this may influence their understanding of dosing, factor pharmacokinetics and probability. The impact of numeracy on health outcomes and the utility of the SW and stick figure numeracy tests to help guide patient-centered discussions that involve mathematical concepts are important areas of future research. Abstract:
Numeraticy is the ability to analyze, interpret information, and find a solution by involving one's mathematical knowledge. Numeracy is known to be influenced by self-efficacy. This study aims to describe students' numeracy in solving data and uncertainty problems in terms of high and low self-efficacy. This study is descriptive research with a qualitative approach was carried out by collecting data from research subjects purposively consisting of three students with high self-efficacy and three students with low self-efficacy. The instruments used included a self-efficacy questionnaire, three data and uncertainty questions, and an interview guide. The data is then analyzed using the numeracy’s sub-indicators. The results showed that in general the numeracy of the group of students with high self-efficacy in solving questions containing data problems and uncertainties was better than the group of students with low self-efficacy. Based on these significant differences, it is recommended for teachers to create a learning climate that can support increased student self-efficacy and numeracy. As well as from the results of the interviews which only focused on parts that were not clear from the student's answers, future researchers should conduct interviews on all of the student’s numeracy in order to obtain more complete research data.

Abstract:
Abstract Numeracy practices are always dependent on the social context in which they emerge. These contexts, however, are unstable because of a range of technological and socio-political changes. How does this instability affect people’s agency in the world? After reviewing key approaches to numeracy practices research, we distil key findings from recent numeracy studies. We introduce the concept of the numerate environment to examine the context in which opportunities, supports and demands present themselves for people’s numeracy development, explaining how cultural-historical activity theory can be used to analyse the effects of changes in numerate environments. We consider examples of social trends likely to effect such changes and conclude with implications of shifts in people’s numerate environment for future educational provision, policy and research.

This research aims to describe the numeracy knowledge profile of prospective mathematics teacher students. This type of research is quantitative descriptive research. The subjects of this research were 32 prospective mathematics teacher students at a private university in Yogyakarta. Data collection techniques in this research used questionnaires and interviews. The research results show that the majority of prospective mathematics teacher students are doubtful about their knowledge of numeracy. Furthermore, none of the students mentioned the complete meaning of numeracy skills; most only mentioned numeration as numbers and mathematical symbols, solving everyday problems, and number operations. Students are also unable to mention the content and context of numeracy questions. However, all students realize that as prospective mathematics teachers, it is important to study numeracy and implement it in the classroom. Abstract:
A growing body of research has indicated a relationship between numeracy and decision making and that lower numerate people display more disadvantageous decisions. In the domain of intertemporal choice, researchers have long been using impulsivity to address choice preference. To further illuminate the psychological mechanisms of making intertemporal choices, the present study examined the role of impulsivity and numeracy in intertemporal choice, in the presence of each other. The study adopted both subjective and numeracy scales. These scales correlated with each other and with intertemporal choice preference. Moreover, it was found that after controlling for impulsivity, the object numeracy was significantly associated with choice preference, with higher numerate participants showing a stronger preference toward the later larger gains over the sooner smaller gains. Thus, the study indicated that intertemporal choice preference could be attributed to both impulsivity and numeracy.

Abstract:
Purpose: The literature suggests that the ability to numerate cannot be fully understood without accounting for the social context in which mathematical activity is represented. Team-based learning (TBL) is an andragogical approach with theoretical links to sociocultural and community-of-practice learning. This study aimed to quantitatively explore the impact of TBL instruction on numeracy development in 2 cohorts of pharmacy students and identify the impact of TBL instruction on numeracy development from a social perspective for healthcare education. Methods: Two cohorts of students were administered the Health Science Reasoning Test-Numeracy (HSRT-N) before beginning pharmacy school. Two years after using TBL as the primary method of instruction, both comprehensive and domain data from the HSRT-N were analyzed. Results: In total, 163 pharmacy student scores met the inclusion criteria. The students’ numeracy skills measured by HSRT-N improved after 2 years of TBL instruction. Conclusion: Numeracy was the most significantly improved HSRT-N domain in pharmacy students following two years of TBL instruction. Although a closer examination of numeracy development in TBL is warranted, initial data suggest that TBL instruction may be an adequate proxy for advancing numeracy in a cohort of pharmacy students. TBL may encourage a social practice of mathematics to improve pharmacy students’ ability to numerate critically.

Abstract:
AbstractWe investigated the relations between numeracy and superior judgment and decision making in two large community outreach studies in Holland (n=5408). In these very highly educated samples (e.g., 30–50% held graduate degrees), the Berlin Numeracy Test was a robust predictor of financial, medical, and metacognitive task performance (i.e., lotteries, intertemporal choice, denominator neglect, and confidence judgments), independent of education, gender, age, and another numeracy assessment. Metacognitive processes partially mediated the link between numeracy and superior performance. More numerate participants performed better because they deliberated more during decision making and more accurately evaluated their judgments (e.g., less overconfidence). Results suggest that well-designed numeracy tests tend to be robust predictors of superior judgment and decision making because they simultaneously assess (1) mathematical competency and (2) metacognitive and self-regulated learning skills.

Abstract:
Disparities in home numeracy environments contribute to variations in children’s mathematical skills. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the relation between home numeracy experiences and mathematical learning are unknown. Here, parents of 66 eight-year-olds completed a questionnaire assessing the frequency of home numeracy practices. Neural adaptation to the repetition of Arabic numerals and words was measured in children using functional MRI ( n = 50) to assess how sensitive the brain is to the presentation of numerical and nonnumerical information. Disparities in home numeracy practices were related to differences in digit (but not word) processing in a region of the left intraparietal sulcus (IPS) that was also related to children’s arithmetic fluency. Furthermore, digit-related processing in the IPS influenced the relation between home numeracy practices and arithmetic fluency. Results were consistent with a model hypothesizing that home numeracy practices may affect children’s mathematical skills by modulating the IPS response to symbolic numerical information.

Abstract:

Based on the results of observations made at a Christian Kindergarten in Tangerang, it was found that there was an unevenness in the numeracy abilities of early-age students. Some students already have the ability to count numbers 1 and 3, but some others do not. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce numeracy skills by the teacher so that students have an even numeracy ability. The purpose of writing this scientific work is to describe the application of the storytelling method to the numeracy skills of early-age students in thematic learning. The research method used is descriptive qualitative research method. Based on the results of the discussion, it was found that the application of the storytelling method was carried out in six stage’s that were closely related to the introduction of numeracy skills, namely making preparations before learning, checking readiness and providing motivation to students, actively involving students, telling stories with attention to language, developing, and checking student understanding. Through the application of the six stages of the storytelling method in thematic learning it can help teachers to assess and confirm the level of numeracy abilities of early age students. The next suggestion is to pay attention to various indicators of numeracy skills that have not been studied and to pay attention to the time allocation in teaching so that the effectiveness of the six stages of the storytelling method can be assessed.

The purpose of this service is to implement literacy and numeracy activities in an effort to revive learning at SDIT Darul Hikmah Insani. This dedication is motivated by the ineffectiveness of Distance Learning (PJJ) at SDIT Darul Hikmah. The service activities held are tutor classes and the main targets are students who still do not understand literacy and numeracy. The success of the program is measured by a number of questions given to students about literacy and numeracy. The data collection techniques used in this service are documentation, interviews, and observations. The results of this service activity indicate that tutor class activities that teach literacy-numeracy to students are going well to achieve its main goal. The tutor class, which is held after each lesson, focuses on teaching numeracy-literacy to students who experience delays in understanding. In overcoming these obstacles, SDIT Darul Hikam Insani and Campus Teaching students improve their approach to students by adding more hours to study literacy-numeracy after compulsory school hours are over, from 12.00-13.00 WIB (2 August-17 December 2021) to be exact.

Abstrack Human life is closely related to numeracy, the 'difficult' perception that students instill in numeracy is often the reason why they do not like to learn it. Therefore, we need a special method that can slowly replace this perception with the perception that numeracy literacy is fun and very useful for everyday life. The right way to increase early childhood numeracy literacy is to play while learning. In the end, the media for the giant snake and ladder game was chosen with the application of the ATIK (Observe, Imitate, Work) model where children learn numeracy by playing in a fun way and can be used as an effort to improve numeracy literacy in early childhood. The method used is a descriptive research method where the researcher only wants to know how the state of the variable itself is without any influence or relationship to other variables such as experimental research or correlation and the researcher acts as a key instrument and describes a situation objectively or based on visible facts. . In this case, the teacher must provide a complete and understandable footing for children according to the ATIK model.

Abstract:
Numeracy is the capacity to use mathematical ideas in all facets of life. It involves activities such as adding and subtracting numbers, counting, number recognition, solving number problems involving various operations, sorting, observing, identifying, and establishing patterns. It is one of the fundamental skills that students should have mastered by the end of their primary schooling. With the notable importance of mastery of numeracy skills, low achievement and performance of the learners were observed in this aspect. This study aimed in enhancing the numeracy skills of Grade 3 learners through authentic performance tasks. The variable in numeracy skills includes the four fundamental operations and problem solving. The quasi-experimental design was utilized wherein purposive sampling or non-randomized sampling was used. In this study, 33 Grade 3 learners of Rizal Elementary School were selected to participate in the tests. Pre-test and post-test crafted by the teacher were the main instrument in the study. The result revealed that in the pre-test the learners obtained a mean percentage score (MPS) of 38.20% in four fundamental operations, which implied a non-numerate level. While in terms of problem solving, the learners obtained a MPS of 20.60% which is also in the non-numerate level. It has a grand mean of 29.40% with an interpretation of non-numerate level. In the post-test, it was observed that four fundamental operations have a MPS of 81.10% which is in average numerate level, while problem solving has a MPS of 76.30% with a grand mean of 78.70% with an interpretation of average numerate level. This implied that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test in the four fundamental operations and problem solving. Thus, it can be concluded that the application of authentic performance tasks was effective to bridge the gap on numeracy skills.

Abstract:
AbstractThe present study investigated skilled and adaptive strategy selection in risky decision making. We proposed that people with high objective numeracy, a strong predictor of general decision making skill, would have a broad repertoire of choice strategies and adaptively select these strategies depending on the importance of the decision. Thus more objectively numerate people would maximize their effort (e.g., invest more time) in important, high-payoff decisions and switch to a simple, fast heuristic strategy in trivial decisions. Subjective numeracy would, by contrast, be more closely related to interest in problem solving for its own sake and would not yield such an effect of importance. Participants made twelve high-payoff choices and twelve low-payoff choices in binary two-outcome gambles framed as gains. We measured objective and subjective numeracy using standard measures. Results showed that people with high subjective numeracy generally maximized the expected value (EV) in all decisions. In contrast, participants with high objective numeracy maximized EV only when choice problems were meaningful (i.e., they could result in high payoffs). When choice problems were trivial (i.e., choosing the normatively better option would not result in a large payoff), more objectively numerate participants made choices consistent with faster, more frugal heuristic strategies.

Abstract:
Working with cardinal numbers is undoubtedly an integral part of our everyday life, which tells us about quantity. They are used for instance, in numeracy lessons, on receipts, slips, tellers in banks, to represent figures on documents, to tell time and are often represented inconsistently. However, the words form representations are often inconsistent with the standard Hausa. Standard Hausa as compared to other languages such as Arabic and British English, the Numeric System is characterized by a multitude of concatenations as well as dialect variations which causes misinterpretations and confusion. Also, initial findings show that no such automation published work has been done specifically in the numerical system of Standard Hausa language. In order to fill the gap, this study proposed an algorithm for converting numerals to words for the numeric system of Hausa language automatically in standard practice. The aim of the study is to examine the effect of iteration and mapping structures algorithm for converting numeral to cardinal form in standard Hausa language. The algorithm has been tested on approximately one hundred million sequences of numbers produced accurate results. The results showed that our method is successful in automating conversion of numerals to words with a high precision.

Abstract:
AbstractThe influence of numeracy on information processing of two risk communication formats (percentage and pictograph) was examined using an eye tracker. A sample from the general population (N = 159) was used. In intuitive and deliberative decision conditions, the participants were presented with a hypothetical scenario presenting a test result. The participants indicated their feelings and their perceived risk, evoked by a 17% risk level. In the intuitive decision condition, a significant correlation (r = .30) between numeracy and the order of information processing was found: the higher the numeracy, the earlier the processing of the percentage, and the lower the numeracy, the earlier the processing of the pictograph. This intuitive, initial focus on a format prevailed over the first half of the intuitive decision-making process. In the deliberative decision condition, the correlation between numeracy and order of information processing was not significant. In both decision conditions, high and low numerates processed pictograph and percentage formats with similar depths and derived similar meanings from them in terms of feelings and perceived risk. In both conditions numeracy had no effects on the degree of attention on the percentage or the pictograph (number of fixations on formats and transitions between them). The results suggest that pictographs attract low numerates’ attention, and percentages attract high numerates’ attention in the first, intuitive, phase of numeric information processing. Pictographs thus ensure low numerates’ further elaboration on numeric risk information, which is an important precondition of risk understanding and decision making.
