Abstract:
Every nucleated diploid cell in the body, with the exception of B and T cells of the immune system, has the same genome as its originating single fertilized egg. During development, this single cell differentiates into a complex multicellular organism composed of various cells and tissues each carrying out specialized functions. Although each cell contains a genome of data it needs to select the relevant information from this genetic blueprint to fulfil its own specific function. ‘Molecular interactions’ shows that proteins must be produced in the right place and at the right time. This requires regulation of gene expression in conjunction with a myriad of bio-molecular interactions to coordinate this.

Abstract:
During the later medieval period, the vast majority of the British population lived in rural settlements whose primary means of subsistence was agriculture. This overview summarizes the evidence for the villages, hamlets, and farmsteads of medieval England, Scotland, and Wales. Regional differences in the intensity of fieldwork are explored, followed by discussions of nucleated and dispersed settlement patterns, planned villages, and specialist grazing (including seasonal), coastal, industrial, and high-status settlements associated with different forms of landscape exploitation. This exposes some of the commonalities between settlement patterns in the different regions of medieval Britain, although it is also apparent that there have been separate research traditions in England, Scotland, and Wales.

Abstract:
This article examines the DNA-based self-assembly of nanostructures. It first reviews the development of DNA self-assembly and DNA-directed assembly, focusing on the main strategies and building blocks available in the modern molecular construction toolbox, including the design, construction, and analysis of nanostructures composed entirely of synthetic DNA, as well as origami nanostructures formed from a mixture of synthetic and biological DNA. In particular, it considers the stepwise covalent synthesis of DNA nanomaterials, unmediated assembly of DNA nanomaterials, hierarchical assembly, nucleated assembly, and algorithmic assembly. It then discusses DNA-directed assembly of heteromaterials such as proteins and peptides, gold nanoparticles, and multicomponent nanostructures. It also describes the use of complementary DNA cohesion as 'smart glue' for bringing together covalently linked functional groups, biomolecules, and nanomaterials. Finally, it evaluates the potential future of DNA-based self-assembly for nanoscale manufacturing for applications in medicine, electronics, photonics, and materials science.

Abstract:
The blood system transports nutrients, oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogenous wastes; other functions include defence. Fish have a closed, single circulation in which blood is pumped by a contractile heart via a ventral aorta to the gills, then via the dorsal aorta to vessels supplying the tissues and organs, with a venous return to the heart. Large venous sinuses occur in elasmobranchs. Air-breathing fish have modifications of the circulation. Complex networks of narrow blood vessels can occur as red patches, retia, maximizing transfer of nutrients, oxygen or heat. Most fish have nucleated red blood cells (erythrocytes) with haemoglobin. The types of white blood cells (leucocytes) are similar to those of other vertebrates but there are thrombocytes rather than platelets. Nutrient transport is in the plasma, the fluid component of the blood, which may also carry antifreeze agents and molecules (e.g. urea in elasmobranchs) which counteract deleterious osmotic effects
