Full text
Abstract:
The use of grafting techniques for horticultural crops increases plant tolerance to various abiotic and biotic stresses. Tomato production under greenhouse conditions relies on plants grafted onto vigorous rootstocks because they sustain crops for longer periods. Growers under Mediterranean conditions usually grow crops in passive greenhouses during the summer and winter season, to provide fresh products throughout the year. No information is available with regard to the effect of the environment on nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE) in tomato plants grafted onto rootstocks with different vigor. In the present study, NUE, along with its components—uptake (NUpE) and utilization (NUtE) efficiencies—were evaluated in tomato plants grafted onto two interspecific rootstocks, conferring medium (“King Kong”) or high (“Kaiser”) vigor to the plants. The evaluations were carried out during the vegetative and reproductive stage in plants subjected to different environmental conditions resulting in different plant growth rates. The grafting treatments did not affect NUE, NUpE or NUtE in young plants, but at the reproductive stage, differences were found during the summer season (high N demand) where the vigorous rootstock increased NUpE from 55%, in non-grafted plants, to 94%, with the consequent differences in NUE. During the winter crop, no differences in NUE were found between the vigorous rootstock and non-grafted plants, but the less vigorous (cold-tolerant) rootstock enhanced NUpE. Significant positive relationships were found between plant growth rate and both NUE and NUpE, while NUtE decreased with increasing growth rate.

Abstract:
Nitrogen efficiency, along with associated indexes, is a widely used tool for assessing nutritional status in agricultural species. However, this parameter is not used in studies with ornamental plants, especially epiphytic cacti species. In particular, we know very little about the potential response of ornamental cacti to N absorption and use. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate N use efficiency (NUE), along with its associated parameters, in three species of ornamental cacti under nitrogen nutrition. To accomplish this, Rhipsalis baccifera, Rhipsalis paradoxa and Hatiora salicornioides were fertilized by Hogland and Arnon nutrition solution modified and enriched with urea in the concentrations of 0, 33.3 or 66.6 mM N during 180 days. At the end of the experiment, efficiency indexes were calculated. Efficiency parameters varied according to species. R. baccifera presented the greatest dissimilarity among the species, with highest uptake efficiency (NUpE), but lowest use efficiency (NUtE) and biomass conversion (BCE). R. paradoxa presented high values for NUE, NUtE, BCE and physiological efficiency (NPE) at concentrations of 33.3 mM N, suggesting greater investment in biological processes with lower supply of N. H. salicornioides had the highest averages in most parameters measured. Our results show that these indexes provided important comparative baseline information on nutritional status and investment strategy, thus serving as a suitable analytical tool to increase knowledge about this group of ornamental plants.

Abstract:
IntroductionSince 2005, new treatment and diagnostic methods (NUBs) were reimbursed by individual supplementary fees. The assessment procedure for NUBs is induced by hospitals submitting a request for additional compensation of healthcare treatment to the Institute for the Fee System in the Hospital (InEK). In 2016, the legal norm §137h SGB V was introduced to evaluate medical devices (MD) of high risk classes by the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA). InEK grants a status that is valid for twelve months and impacts additional compensation as well as assessment required by G-BA. The effects of this rating seem to differ between hospitals and Statutory Health Insurance (SHI).MethodsThe published InEK decisions on NUBs were analyzed according the decision criteria and possible impact on price negotiations with SHI.ResultsIn 2018, 705 NUB requests were assessed by InEK. NUB Status 1, granting negotiation of additional coverage, was assigned to 171 procedures. Status 2 – no additional reimbursement possible - was given in 472 cases, the remaining had not sufficient information. Most NUBs (n = 368) requests did not fall under §137h; however, those with sub-Status “B” (allocated to 12) led to controversies; no participant had requested an evaluation according to §137h for the NUB. Two consultation requests receiving Status 1 B were regarded as not eligible according to § 137h by the G-BA. To avoid price negotiation delays, early consultations according to § 137h are recommended by G-BA during the NUB application.ConclusionsThe NUB process enables hospitals to receive a supplemental payment when using innovative technologies not listed in the existing German healthcare system. The question of which requirements must be fulfilled to guarantee the reimbursement should be asked at an early stage. Consultation requests to the G-BA in due time are strongly recommended. Contact between manufacturers and hospitals are advisable to support the NUB application.

Abstract:
Background Digital food registration via online platforms that are coupled to large food databases obviates the need for manual processing of dietary data. The reliability of such platforms depends on the quality of the associated food database. Objective In this study, we validate the database of MyFitnessPal versus the Belgian food composition database, Nubel. Methods After carefully given instructions, 50 participants used MyFitnessPal to each complete a 4-day dietary record 2 times (T1 and T2), with 1 month in between T1 and T2. Nutrient intake values were calculated either manually, using the food composition database Nubel, or automatically, using the database coupled to MyFitnessPal. First, nutrient values from T1 were used as a training set to develop an algorithm that defined upper limit values for energy intake, carbohydrates, fat, protein, fiber, sugar, cholesterol, and sodium. These limits were applied to the MyFitnessPal dataset extracted at T2 to remove extremely high and likely erroneous values. Original and cleaned T2 values were correlated with the Nubel calculated values. Bias was estimated using Bland-Altman plots. Finally, we simulated the impact of using MyFitnessPal for nutrient analysis instead of Nubel on the power of a study design that correlates nutrient intake to a chosen outcome variable. Results Per food portion, the following upper limits were defined: 1500 kilocalories for total energy intake, 95 grams (g) for carbohydrates, 92 g for fat, 52 g for protein, 22 g for fiber, 70 g for sugar, 600 mg for cholesterol, and 3600 mg for sodium. Cleaning the dataset extracted at T2 resulted in a 2.8% rejection. Cleaned MyFitnessPal values demonstrated strong correlations with Nubel for energy intake (r=0.96), carbohydrates (r=0.90), fat (r=0.90), protein (r=0.90), fiber (r=0.80), and sugar (r=0.79), but weak correlations for cholesterol (ρ=0.51) and sodium (ρ=0.53); all P values were ≤.001. No bias was found between both methods, except for a fixed bias for fiber and a proportional bias for cholesterol. A 5-10% power loss should be taken into account when correlating energy intake and macronutrients obtained with MyFitnessPal to an outcome variable, compared to Nubel. Conclusions Dietary analysis with MyFitnessPal is accurate and efficient for total energy intake, macronutrients, sugar, and fiber, but not for cholesterol and sodium.

Abstract:
It is commonly recognized that immunodeficiency modifies the gut microbiota in mammals. However, little information on the gut microbiota is available for athymic nude mice; one of the most popular animals for modeling immunodeficiency and tumors. In this study, 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing was performed to investigate the gut microbial composition of pup nude BALB/c mice during a 30-day experimental period. In contrast to pup normal mice, pup nude mice showed a significant variation in gut microbiota. Continuously decreased dynamics of the gut bacterial Shannon index, abnormal Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, the rarity of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species, and a developmental lag of gut bacterial functions were observed in nude mice. The shift in gut microbiota and abnormal colonization of beneficial bacterial species in nude mice provide an updated insight into the nude mouse tumor model and a new perspective for establishing an animal model for study on dysbacteriosis.

Abstract:
Information causality measures have proven to be very effective in uncovering the connectivity patterns of multivariate systems. The non-uniform embedding (NUE) scheme has been developed to address the “curse of dimensionality”, since the estimation relies on high-dimensional conditional mutual information (CMI) terms. Although the NUE scheme is a dimension reduction technique, the estimation of high-dimensional CMIs is still required. A possible solution is the utilization of low-dimensional approximation (LA) methods for the computation of CMIs. In this study, we aim to provide useful insights regarding the effectiveness of causality measures that rely on NUE and/or on LA methods. In a comparative study, three causality detection methods are evaluated, namely partial transfer entropy (PTE) defined using uniform embedding, PTE using the NUE scheme (PTENUE), and PTE utilizing both NUE and an LA method (LATE). Results from simulations on well known coupled systems suggest the superiority of PTENUE over the other two measures in identifying the true causal effects, having also the least computational cost. The effectiveness of PTENUE is also demonstrated in a real application, where insights are presented regarding the leading forces in financial data.

Abstract:
Context. In an earlier study, we reported that the ram gauge of the COmet Pressure Sensor (COPS), one of the three instruments of the Rosetta Orbiter Spectrometer for Ion and Neutral Analysis (ROSINA), could be used to obtain information about the sublimating content of icy particles, made up of volatiles and conceivably refractories coming from comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Aims. In this work, we extend the investigation to the second COPS gauge, the nude gauge. In particular, we analyse the volume of the volatile content of coma particles, along with a search for possible dependencies between the nude gauge detection rate (i.e. the rate at which icy particles are detected by the nude gauge) and the position of the Rosetta spacecraft. We also investigate the correlations of the nude gauge detection rate with the quantities associated with cometary activity. Methods. We inspected the density measurements made by the nude gauge for features attributable to the presence of icy particles inside the instrument. These data were then analysed statistically based on the amplitude of the feature and on the position of the spacecraft at the time of detection. Results. Although it was not originally designed for such a purpose, the COPS nude gauge has been able to detect ~67 000 features generated by the sublimation of the volatile content of icy particles. The nude gauge detection rate follows a trend that is inversely proportional to the heliocentric distance. This result is interpreted as a confirmation of a possible relation between the nude gauge detection rate and cometary activity. Thus, we compared the former with parameters related to cometary activity and obtained significant correlations, indicating that the frequency of icy particle detection is driven by cometary activity. Furthermore, by representing the volatile part of the icy particles as equivalent spheres with a density of 1 g cm−3, we obtained a range of diameters between 60 and 793 nm, with the smaller ones (<390 nm in diameter) having a size distribution power index of −4.79 ± 0.26.

Abstract:
In order to gain information about the effect of xenografted, allografted and isografted thymic tissue on peripheral lymphoid organs of immune-deficient rats, athymic nude LEW rats of ninth backcross–intercross were grafted with fetal calf and neonatal BD1X and LEW thymus. Adrenalectomy was also performed in some animals in order to obtain a possible enhancement of the immunological reconstitution. Both groups of isogeneic-thymus-grafted animals had more T helper cells than the nude controls. Furthermore, they had more densely populated paracortical areas in the inguinal lymph nodes and higher lymphocyte counts in the thoracic duct lymph. Finally, the inguinal lymph nodes contained germinal centres. Xenogeneic and allogeneic thymus transplants did not induce constant changes in the parameters observed compared with the untreated nudes. No clear difference was observed between the adrenalectomized and non-adrenalectomized thymicisografted animals. We therefore conclude that of all the experimental animals examined the isografted nude rats show by far the best response and that adrenalectomy seems unnecessary for the success of neonatal isogeneic thymus grafts. We also conclude that the isogeneic-thymus-grafted nude rat is a suitable tool for immunological reconstitution studies.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper explores the extent of the current mechanism to access urban spatial planning information of community in urban detailed planning projects (UDPPs), the constraints on urban planning information accessibility in Vietnam context to challenge the community participation for sustainable development. The research is based on an analysis of the planning information sharing content found in four UDPPs in Vietnam and interviews with 20 key informants. The research identified that the urban spatial planning information for the community is limited and difficult to access, and the planning information exchange process is one-way flow, authority-controlled and non-transparent. Besides, the lack of human resources and technological application provide a challenging context for involving the community in UDPPs. The paper concludes by proposing several recommendations for improving the urban planning information exchange process and technological tools that should be applied to foster community participation in Vietnam's urban context, towards sustainable development.

Abstract:
To investigate the effect of structured bras and soft bras on breast shape, 46 female participants (Caucasian, BMI < 30, aged 18–45) were recruited for three-dimensional (3D) scanning. Participants were scanned in three conditions: wearing a provided structured bra, a provided soft bra, and nude. The impact of the bras on breast asymmetry was quantitatively studied. The change in breast shape and position from the nude condition to the condition when shaped by the bras was also explored. Contour maps that show the topographic shapes of the scans were generated to analyze these comparisons. Thirty-five measurements were extracted from spider web structures that were derived from the contour maps, and were used for statistical analysis. Eight measurements were found to be especially indicative of the shape variations introduced by the bras. Regression models were built to predict the in-bra shape given only the nude breast shape. Lastly, heat maps that visualize the shape variations from the nude-to-bra condition via colors were plotted on the surfaces of the 3D scans of the participants in bras, and were used for qualitative analysis. This study is helpful in understanding how bras interact with breast tissue, and can provide useful information for the improvement of bra designs for enhanced fitting or desired shaping effects.

Abstract:
Of all the figures in the struggle over turn-of-the-century vice reform, Anthony Comstock is perhaps the last one might expect to encounter immortalized in the nude. He acquired his fame as a censor of nudity, among other offenses: from 1873 to his death in 1915, Assistant United States Postmaster Comstock lent his name and his enthusiasm for law enforcement to the prosecution of the “Comstock Laws,” the eponymous statutes which restricted the dissemination of vicious images and information through the United States mail. In his government post and as the head of New York City's private Society for the Suppression of Vice, Comstock prosecuted quack physicians, abortionists, lottery runners, purveyors of lewd literature and art, free love advocates and physical culture devotees. By the end of his career, he had arrested more than 3,700 people and burned over fifty tons of obscene books, 3,984,063 obscene pictures, and 16,900 photographic plates.

New Testament perspectives on the Sabbath and the Sunday In order to come to terms with New Testament views on the Sabbath and the Sunday, an investigation of Jewish schematizations of time and of the Sabbath in particular, around the first century A.D. is undertaken. This is followed by a discussion of relevant New Testament texts on the Sabbath and the Sunday. Finally, the available information from the New Testament is placed within the interpretative framework of the “Christ event” which inaugurated the eschaton, and which also replaced the strong emphasis on specific holy days within early Christianity. However, the Sunday was probably chosen by some early Christian groups as the most suitable day to commemorate the resurrection of Christ.

Abstract:
Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient element for crop productivity. Unfortunately, the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of crop plants gradually decreases with the increase of the N application rate. Nevertheless, little has been known about the molecular mechanisms of differences in NUE among genotypes of wheat. In this study, we used RNA-Sequencing (RNA-Seq) to compare the transcriptome profiling of flag leaves at the stage of anthesis in wheat NILs (1Y, high-NUE, and 1W, low-NUE) under normal nitrogen conditions (300 kg N ha−1, corresponding to 1.6 g N pot−1). We identified 7023 DEGs (4738 upregulated and 2285 downregulated) in the comparison between lines 1Y and 1W. The responses of 1Y and 1W to normal N differed in the transcriptional regulatory mechanisms. Several genes belonging to the GS and GOGAT gene families were upregulated in 1Y compared with 1W, and the enhanced carbon metabolism might lead 1Y to produce more C skeletons, metabolic energy, and reductants for nitrogen metabolism. A subset of transcription factors (TFs) family members, such as ERF, WRKY, NAC, and MYB, were also identified. Collectively, these identified candidate genes provided new information for a further understanding of the genotypic difference in NUE.

Abstract:
Nitrogen (N) recognized as a critical element for plant growth plays a fundamental role in rice cultivation. The N use efficiency (NUE) hovers around 30-35% in rice, suggesting a significant loss of N from the rice fields. Improving the NUE therefore would require genetic interventions and breeding. The cultivar improvement for N uptake and utilization is required to elevate NUE to further heights. Several quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for NUE under varying conditions and genetic backgrounds have been reported in rice. Consolidation of this distributed and unorganized information is necessary to identify critical genomic regions to be used for crop improvement. Therefore, a Meta-analysis from an assembly of 506 QTLs reported from 18 different studies was performed to identify the most significant genomic regions associated with NUE in rice. A total of 12 meta-QTLs (mQTLs) related to the traits such as NUE and grain yield per plant under N deficit conditions have been identified over four rice chromosomes namely 1, 3, 4, and 8. Evaluation of these mQTLs in a set of Indian rice germplasm revealed a significant association of the meta loci with N use parameters and showed wide distribution in the germplasm. Identification of mQTLs on different chromosomes together with their respective markers will help recruit them in marker-assisted selection (MAS) to develop N use efficient genotypes.

Turner, John. "Nutrient use efficiency and utilisation in east coast Australian Eucalyptus forests." Australian Journal of Botany 67, no. 8 (2019): 585. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/bt18178.

Full text
Abstract:
Nutrient use efficiency (NUE) has been used as a method to evaluate the utilisation and processes of cycling of nutrient in forests. In publications, different methods have been used to calculate NUE, but as efficiency they are all expressed as ratios and these cover the basic areas of: (1) absorption from the soil and uptake, (2) efficiency in their requirement or utilisation of nutrients including physiological efficiency and (3) efficiency in the retention and internal re-utilisation of nutrients. Few studies address NUE based on complete nutrient cycling information but use indices based on litterfall or foliage nutrient concentrations. In this study different expressions of NUE were defined and evaluated for N and P using data on nutrient cycles on species in the genus Eucalyptus in regrowth and mature native eastern Australian forests. It has been hypothesised that NUE increases with decreasing nutrient availability however increasing such efficiency has a cost reflected in reduced productivity. The hypothesis was proven for all expressions of NUE correlating NUE against estimates of soil N or P availability but there were differences between coastal and tableland Eucalyptus forests. The level of significance varied for different types of NUE and in these ecosystems P was of greater significance than N. This reflected the importance of P in relation to productivity on many of the weathered soils or the limited value of the soil available N indices. It is suggested that the difference expressions of NUE differ in their significance with species so some will be relatively more efficient in terms of uptake, others in utilisation and others in redistribution. Only in extreme situations of nutrient availability do species have relatively high efficiency for all methods NUE calculation. It is proposed that these differences are of importance in site/species distribution and more importantly in mixed stands where they provide advantages either at different stages of stand development or after significant disturbances such as fire.

Abstract:
Objective: Based on the hypothesis that neonatal uterine bleedings (NUB), occurring mostly in the first week after birth, could represent a pathogenetic mechanism for early-onset endometriosis, this systematic review (SR) was undertaken to evaluate the prevalence and screening strategies used to assess and quantify NUB. Design: Both a SR and a sample literature search in PubMed and Embase were conducted to gather information on NUB prevalence and screening techniques. This was performed by an information specialist. Only full-text articles regarding the assessment of NUB in neonates in the first 2 weeks after birth were included. No limit on language or publication data was used. Materials and Methods: The SR was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42019138121). Data was first assessed for eligibility on title and abstract by 2 blinded review authors. Any disagreements were discussed with a third reviewer if necessary. Subsequently, full-text articles were read and assessed for quality using the Cochrane Collaboration Handbook. Results: Out of 1,988 articles in the systematic search, 10 relevant articles were selected, of which 8 were identified through the systematic search and 2 were found through other sources. The sample search of 4,445 articles did not bring up relevant articles. Results were not comparable due to the heterogeneity of screening techniques, although data showed consensus. The prevalence of visible bleeding ranged from 3.3 to 53.8% and the prevalence of occult bleeding from 25.4 to 96.7%. The occurrence was the highest between the 3rd and 7th day postpartum (PP) and the bleeding lasted for 3–4 days on average. Various screening techniques for detecting NUB were found in the literature, including the use of hemoglobin detection devices (such as Hemastix) in the vaginal vestibulum, comparison of diapers with stains of known volume, colposcopy, and ultrasonography. Conclusion: The reported prevalence of NUB varies considerably, with a consistent occurrence between the 3rd and the 7th day PP. Literature to assess NUB is dated. The techniques are poorly described and heterogeneous. Future research should focus on prospective cohort studies in order to attempt to correlate NUB cases to (early-onset) endometriosis.

Abstract:
In order to explore the correlation between targeted contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging and tumor neovascularization of ovarian cancer xenografts in nude mice, a total of 49 nude mice were selected and randomly divided into 1-week group, 2-week group, 3-week group, 4-week group, 5-week group, 6-week group, and 7-week group according to their ovarian cancer xenografts’ growth time, with 7 ovarian cancer xenografts in each group. After preparing antibody-carrying targeted contrast agent, each group of xenografts performed normal and targeted contrast ultrasound examinations to obtain peak intensity, time to peak, and other imaging parameters; then, those ovarian cancer xenografts were sacrificed for pathological analysis: the neovascular density and antibody expression of the cancer xenografts at different stages were observed and counted, and the correlation between targeted contrast-enhanced ultrasound parameters and tumor neovascular densities of the ovarian cancer xenografts was analyzed. The results show that the peak intensities of targeted contrast ultrasound imaging are greater than that of ordinary ultrasound imaging in the 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-week groups with statistically significant differences ( P < 0.05 ); the time to peak of targeted contrast ultrasound imaging is shorter than that of ordinary ultrasound imaging in the 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-week groups with statistically significant differences ( P < 0.05 ); there is a positive correlation between the peak intensities of targeted contrast ultrasound imaging and tumor neovascular densities of the ovarian cancer xenografts in the 2-, 3-, and 4-week group (r2 = 0.645, r3 = 0.668, and r4 = 0.693, P < 0.05 ); there is a negative correlation between the time to peak of targeted contrast ultrasound imaging and tumor neovascular densities of the ovarian cancer xenografts in the 2-, 3-, and 4-week groups (r2 = −0.669, r3 = −0.692, and r4 = −0.704, P < 0.05 ). Therefore, the targeted contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging parameters have a certain correlation with tumor neovascular density of ovarian cancer xenografts in nude mice and this correlation is more significant in the early stage of ovarian cancer; hence, targeted contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging may provide a new method, new idea, and new basis for the diagnosis of early ovarian cancer.

Abstract:
Limited information exists on how tillage and nitrogen (N) fertilization affects small-scale variation in nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and crop performance. In a two-year field study under temperate conditions, we investigated how tillage (NT, no-tillage; CT, conventional tillage) and N fertilization affected the small-scale variation in NUE and winter wheat performance (grain yield, Gw; grain protein concentration, GPC). A randomized complete block design with three replications was used. Within each tillage plot (12 × 35 m2), N rates (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 kg N ha−1) were completely randomized within each of four groups of microplots (1.5 × 1.5 m2). Early-season soil mineral N (Nmin) was also monitored in both years. At rates < 150 kg N ha−1, NT was not competitive with CT in terms of Gw and NUE. Gw and aboveground plant N were not correlated with Nmin prior to application of N fertilizer. NT usually led to larger spatial heterogeneity of Nmin, Gw, and NUE. The small-scale variability of Gw, GPC, NUE, and N supply decreased with increasing N fertilization rates under both tillage systems. Significant increases in Gw and GPC were observed with increasing N rates, whereas NUE decreased slightly with increasing N rates in both NT and CT. The overall moderate spatial variation in Nmin, Gw, and NUE did not justify site-specific N fertilization in these small fields, with the exception of the stony within-plot positions, which were not responsive to rates of N > 50 kg N ha−1.

Abstract:
Nitrogen (N) is a major nutrient required for growth and yield of rice plants. Several factors including plant, edapic and climate conditions influence the criticle yield response curve of the plants. Apart from breeding for N responsive rice varieties, excessive use of nitrogenous fertilizers have become a general farmers practice to boost rice productivity under intensive cropping system. Now, it is imperative to orient the crop improvement programme for sustainable crop production strategy as well as to achieve the evergreen revolution through improving nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) under global climate change condition. To develop N-efficient rice varieties under crop breeding programs, it is crucial to comprehend the physiological, genetic and molecular features associated with tolerance to nitrogen deprivation. It has always been challenging for a rice breeders to develop rice varieties with high nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), as it is highly complex physiological trait involving several component traits and its dynamic interaction with environemental factor. NUE is a polygenic traits controlled by number of quantitative trait loci's at genomic level. Till date, researchers targeted component traits for increasing NUE such as, nitrogen uptake/absorption, transport from root to shoot, assimilation, utilisation, remobilisation, reasssssmilation and partitioning /redistribution. Here, we described a short summary of the physiological, genetic and molecular underpinnings of nitrogen deficit tolerance and how these prior art information can be used for improving NUE in rice. Insight from our discussions may facilitate the breeders to improve the NUE of rice plants in future.

Abstract:
Abstract. Interpersonal and intrapersonal differences in brain responses to sexual stimuli have been linked with individuals’ testosterone levels. However, it remains unclear how hormones modulate brain functions underlying sexual arousal. In order to assess the effects of chronic hormonal treatment, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging in a group of female-to-male transsexuals before and during androgen therapy while they watched a set of pictures representing dressed or nude (erotic content) men or women (sex information). A broad network of cortical and subcortical regions were activated during the processing of erotic stimuli (nude vs. dressed), including the insula, amygdala, and hypothalamus. The insula activity in response to erotic male stimuli decreased over the initial 4 months of hormonal therapy. In the following 8 months, the insula response to erotic female stimuli increased. In other words, long-term androgen administration makes the brain more “male” by reducing the sexual arousal caused by male stimuli and amplifying that caused by female stimuli.

Abstract:
In rodents, the intestinal tract progressively acquires a functional regionalization during postnatal development. Using lactase-phlorizin hydrolase as a marker, we have analyzed in a xenograft model the ontogenic potencies of fetal rat intestinal segments taken prior to endoderm cytodifferentiation. Segments from the presumptive proximal jejunum and distal ileum grafted in nude mice developed correct spatial and temporal patterns of lactase protein and mRNA expression, which reproduced the normal pre- and post-weaning conditions. Segments from the fetal colon showed a faint lactase immunostaining 8-10 d after transplantation in chick embryos but not in mice; it is consistent with the transient expression of this enzyme in the colon of rat neonates. Heterotopic cross-associations comprising endoderm and mesenchyme from the presumptive proximal jejunum and distal ileum developed as xenografts in nude mice, and they exhibited lactase mRNA and protein expression patterns that were typical of the origin of the endodermal moiety. Endoderm from the distal ileum also expressed a normal lactase pattern when it was associated to fetal skin fibroblasts, while the fibroblasts differentiated into muscle layers containing alpha-smooth-muscle actin. Noteworthy, associations comprising colon endoderm and small intestinal mesenchyme showed a typical small intestinal morphology and expressed the digestive enzyme sucrase-isomaltase normally absent in the colon. However, in heterologous associations comprising lung or stomach endoderm and small intestinal mesenchyme, the epithelial compartment expressed markers in accordance to their tissue of origin but neither intestinal lactase nor sucrase-isomaltase. A thick intestinal muscle coat in which cells expressed alpha-smooth-muscle actin surrounded the grafts. The results demonstrate that: (a) the temporal and positional information needed for intestinal ontogeny up to the post-weaning stage results from an intrinsic program that is fixed in mammalian fetuses prior to endoderm cytodifferentiation; (b) this temporal and positional information is primarily carried by the endodermal moiety which is also able to change the fate of heterologous mesodermal cells to form intestinal mesenchyme; and (c) the small intestinal mesenchyme in turn may deliver instructive information as shown in association with colonic endoderm; yet this effect is not obvious with nonintestinal endoderms.

Abstract:
An excellent root system is responsible for crops with high nitrogen-use efficiency (NUE). The current study evaluated the natural variations in 13 root- and biomass-related traits under a low nitrogen (LN) treatment in a rapeseed association panel. The studied traits exhibited significant phenotypic differences with heritabilities ranging from 0.53 to 0.66, and most of the traits showed significant correlations with each other. The genome-wide association study (GWAS) found 51 significant and 30 suggestive trait–SNP associations that integrated into 14 valid quantitative trait loci (QTL) clusters and explained 5.7–21.2% phenotypic variance. In addition, RNA sequencing was performed at two time points to examine the differential expression of genes (DEGs) between high and low NUE lines. In total, 245, 540, and 399 DEGs were identified as LN stress-specific, high nitrogen (HN) condition-specific, and HNLN common DEGs, respectively. An integrated analysis of GWAS, weighted gene co-expression network, and DEGs revealed 16 genes involved in rapeseed root development under LN stress. Previous studies have reported that the homologs of seven out of sixteen potential genes control root growth and NUE. These findings revealed the genetic basis underlying nitrogen stress and provided worthwhile SNPs/genes information for the genetic improvement of NUE in rapeseed.
