Full textThere is a wave of change coming. It started in the industrial automation community and it is slowly and surely working its way into aerospace, satellite and telemetry applications. It’s called the PC, and its not just for simple quick-look data anymore. Using state-of-the-art commercial hardware and software technologies, PC-based architectures can now be used to perform self contained, reliable and high performance telemetry data acquisition and processing functions – previously the domain of expensive, dedicated front end systems. This paper will discuss many of the key enabling technologies and will provide examples of their use in a truly next generation system architecture based on the Microsoft® Windows NT Operating System and related features.

Full textSystemic sclerosis (SSc) is a diffuse connective tissue disease, characterized by skin and visceral fibrosis and vascular dysfunction. It may lead to pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Currently, with the advance in the treatment of renal problems, the mortality of these patients is related basically to pulmonary envolvement. Severe HAP is difficult to treat and has a poor prognosis. The B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) gene encodes a pro-hormone, which is cleaved in the cardiomyocyte to produce the hormone, BNP, and the biologically inactive N-terminal proBNP (NT-proBNP) fragment. Both are secreted in equimolar quantities. NT-proBNP, composed of 76 amino acids, has a longer half-life than BNP (120 minutes versus 20 minutes), and thus higher circulating levels and better analytical performance. The NTproBNP levels are raised in patients with congestive heart failure, acute myocardial infarction and also in pulmonary arterial hypertension. This review highlights general aspects of diagnosis and management of systemic sclerosis, emphasizing pulmonary involvement. It also assesses the structure and importance of natriuretic peptides, focusing on the NT-proBNP related to pulmonary hypertension and systemic sclerosis.

The Lincoln Adaptable Real Time Information Assurance Testbed (LARIAT) project is the first fully automatable network testbed for the evaluation of information assurance (IA) technologies. It allows researchers to easily set up experiments that evaluate the accuracy of host-based and network-based intrusion detection systems (IDSs). Initially, the network traffic it could produce used UNIX services and protocols as implemented for the Linux and Solaris platforms. However, due to the widespread deployment of Windows-based systems in production environments, it is necessary to include Windows-based traffic when testing IA systems in order to provide a comprehensive evaluation. This thesis describes WinNTGen, a Windows network traffic generation system that integrates into the existing LARIAT framework and enables it to produce Windows-based network traffic. To do this, WinNTGen simulates the actions of a user controlling applications that in turn use network resources. This frees WinNTGen from the need to re-implement network protocols and allows it to operate at a higher level of abstraction. WinNTGen controls applications via loadable libraries that encapsulate the manner in which a typical user interacts with a particular application. The statistical parameters that specify the behavior of a user with each application are derived from real users' behavioral data as they interacted with each application. The system is flexible and extensible so that different versions of the same application as well as additional applications can be controlled by modifying and adding libraries. Finally, the reality and the throughput of the network traffic produced by the WinNTGen system are evaluated.

Sangster, Jodi Kirsten. "Cardiac Biomarkers in Hyperthyroid Cats." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/50542.
Full textHypothesis: Plasma NT-proBNP and cTNI concentrations are higher in cats with primary cardiac disease than in cats with hyperthyroidism and higher in cats with hyperthyroidism than in healthy control cats.
Animals: Twenty-three hyperthyroid cats, 19 cats with HCM without congestive heart failure, and 19 euthyroid, normotensive healthy cats eight years of age or older. Fourteen of the hyperthyroid cats were re-evaluated three months after administration of 131I.
Methods: A complete history, physical examination, complete blood count, serum biochemistries, urinalysis, blood pressure measurement, serum T4 concentration, plasma concentrations of NT-proBNP and cTNI, and echocardiogram was prospectively obtained from each cat.
Results: Hyperthyroid and HCM cats had plasma NT-proBNP and cTNI concentrations that were significantly greater than healthy older cats, but there was no significant difference between hyperthyroid and HCM cats with respect to concentration of either biomarker. In hyperthyroid cats that were re-evaluated three months after 131I treatment, plasma NT-proBNP and cTNI concentrations as well as ventricular wall thickness decreased.
Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Although there may be a role for NT-proBNP in monitoring the cardiac response to treatment of hyperthyroidism, neither NT-proBNP nor cTNI can be used to distinguish hyperthyroid cats from cats with HCM. Therefore, the thyroid status of older cats should be ascertained prior to interpreting results of cardiac biomarker testing.

Full textBACKGROUND: Aortic valve stenosis is a high prevalent cardiac valve disease, in which clinical and echocardiographic parameters are the most common approach of diagnosis and risk evaluation. Complementary methods are desirable and the natriuretic peptides BNP and NT-proBNP, both diagnostic and prognostic markers in multiple clinical situations, could improve patient assessment. We postulate that these peptides may have diagnostic purpose, but mainly a prognostic value in patients with severe aortic stenosis. OBJECTIVE: primarily, define the survival prognostic role of natriuretic peptides BNP and NT-proBNP in monitoring a population of patients with severe aortic stenosis prospectively. Secondarily, compare the serum levels of BNP and NT-proBNP among patients with symptomatic and asymptomatic severe aortic stenosis. METHODS: 66 consecutive patients with severe aortic stenosis, defined by the presence of gradient mean transvalvular aortic pressure greater than 40 mmHg were included. Exclusion criteria were concomitant atrial fibrillation, other valve disease, other myocardiopathies, active infections, autoimmunity diseases, inflammatory diseases, neoplasia, renal failure or obesity. 76% of patients were symptomatic (50/66), defined as dyspnea on exertion, syncope or angina. All patients underwent initial clinical evaluation, echocardiography and BNP and NT-proBNP measurement. Symptomatic patients were referred for surgical treatment and asymptomatic patients were clinically managed. (Patients were followed up prospectively). The clinical outcome was cardiovascular death, defined by sudden death, death from heart failure and peri-operative death. RESULTS: Patients were followed up for 869 + 397 days. There were 11 deaths during followup. On admission, levels of BNP and NT-proBNP were similar in asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals: BNP 72 (41-175) pg / mL vs. 104 (46-270) pg / mL, p = 0.275 and NT-proBNP 676 (235-1356) pg / mL vs. 871 (310-2230) pg / ml, p = 0.226. There were differences between the levels of BNP and NT-proBNP and functional class (p <0.001 p <0.001, respectively). ROC-curve analysis demonstrated a cut-off value of BNP (105 pg / mL) and NT-proBNP (1500 pg / mL) capable of predicting NYHA functional class III and IV, with an area under the curve of 0.806 and 0.786 respectively. BNP and NT-proBNP could predict mortality (p = 0.007 and p = 0.001 respectively). BNP > 105 pg/mL independently increased the risk of cardiovascular death [OR = 6.3 (95% CI: 1.36 to 29.25)]. NT-proBNP > 1500 pg/mL independently increased the risk of cardiovascular death [OR = 6.5 (95% CI: 1.73 to 24.63)]. CONCLUSION: BNP and NT-proBNP were independent predictors of mortality in patients with severe aortic stenosis after a follow up of 4 years. BNP and NT-proBNP were predictors of NYHA functional class III and IV in patients with severe aortic stenosis. BNP and NT-proBNP alone did not distinguish symptomatic from asymptomatic patients

Abstract: This master thesis aims to assess Microsoft Windows NT operating system communication protocols security, mainly when used in corporation environments, where it is important to ascertain if sensitive information is adequately secured. Several important security faults, which are difficult to correct and are dispersed in bibliography, were pointed and grouped. Important new vulnerabilities were discovered, showing that even Windows 2000, the last version of this operating system, is subject to efficient attacks that allow supplanting those communication protocols in order to obtain sensitive information.

Jämförd metod gav dock i genomsnitt 17,8 % lägre resultat.

Cardiovascular diseases, including ischemic heart disease, are the main causes of death in Brazil. Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease that starts in the childhood, progresses slowly and shows up many decades later. It begins as an endothelial dysfunction and has as its main risk factors the male sex, age, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus and a background of early family atherosclerotic disease. The rise of many biochemical markers in the plasma signals the presence of inflammation in the atherosclerosis. The brain natriuretic peptide and the amino-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) also increase in coronary atherosclerosis. This is a cross-sectional and observational study of 153 in-patients at the Cardiology Ward of HUWC-UFC from 08.01.2007 to 03.31.2008 with the diagnostic hypothesis of Ischemic Heart Disease, i.e., stable angina, unstable angina or acute myocardial infarction. All of them underwent heart catheterization and coronary angiography. They were classified respectively as group A or B in accordance with the presence or not of angiographic atherosclerotic coronary occlusion. Patients were not included in the analysis if they had been submitted to surgical or percutaneous revascularization; had an acute or chronic dialytic kidney disease; cancer or infection; a lung, hepatic or hematopoietic disease; an acute or chronic inflammatory illness or associated myocardial, valvular or congenital heart disease. The two groups were analyzed in a similar way with regard to gender, age, level of education, body mass index, abdominal circumference, smoking, diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, an early atherosclerosis family history, the use of statin, presence of metabolic syndrome and clinical presentation of stable angina, unstable angina or acute myocardial infarction. The HDL-cholesterol, non HDL-cholesterol, a total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratio < 5, a LDL-cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratio < 3.5, the creatinine and fibrinogen plasma concentration, the total leukocyte and monocyte count, the high-sensitivity C reactive protein, the NT-proBNP, the electrocardiogram, the chest radiography and the echocardiogram, with regard to the presence or not of systolic dysfunction, were also analyzed. The univariety analysis comparing both groups revealed that group Aâ patients more frequently were diabetics and had systolic dysfunction, NT-proBNP ≥ 250 pg/ml, fibrinogen higher than 500 mg/dl, more frequent use of statin and 501 or more monocytes/mm3 than patients group B. Curiously, the body mass index ≥ 30 and abnormal abdominal circumference were more frequently found among patients with angiographic normal coronary arteries. Nevertheless, by multivariety regression logistic analysis the independent factors for angiographic atherosclerotic coronary occlusion were the NT-proBNP ≥ 250 pg/ml, diabetes mellitus, an increase of monocyte number and of fibrinogen plasma concentration, in spite of creatinine level and presence of systolic dysfunction. The model takes into account these factors has 80.4% sensitivity, 76.9% specificity and 79.7% of accuracy for the diagnostic of angiographic atherosclerotic coronary occlusion.

Full textUpgrading or replacing production systems is always a very resource-consuming task, in particular if the systems being replaced are quite specialized, such as those serving any Flight Test Ground Station. In the recent past a large number of Ground Station systems were based in Digital’s VAX/VMS architecture. The computer industry then expanded very fast and by 1990 realtime PCM data processing systems totally dependent on hardware and software designed for IBM-PC compatible micro-computers were becoming available. A complete system replacement in a typical Ground Station can take from one to several years to become a reality. It depends on how complex the original system is, how complex the resulting system needs to be, how much resources are available to support the operation, how soon the organization needs it, etc. This paper intends to review the main concerns encountered during the replacement of a typical VAX/VMS-based by an Intel-Windows NT-based Ground Station. It covers the transition from original requirements to totally new requirements, from mini-computers to micro-computers, from DMA to high-speed LAN data transfers, while conserving some key architectural features. This 8-month development effort will expand EMBRAER’s capability in acquiring, processing and archiving PCM data in the next few years at a lower cost, while preserving compatibility with old legacy flight test data.

Full textThe general objective of the research was to associate the polymorphism of the gene HLA-G (region 3\' NT) with the co-infection HIV/HCV and with the groups (HIV, HCV and healthy control). It is a cross-sectional, comparative, descriptive study. 560 individuals participated of the study, being 156 healthy control individuals, 102 co- infected HIV/HCV, 186 infected by HIV and 116 by HCV. For identifying the polymorphisms, the genomic DNA was extracted from the total blood and the genotyping was made by PCR and visualized in gel of polyacrylamide at 7%, in which the polymorphism of 14pb was identified, and by sequencing the other seven SNPs. The social demographic results point that the most of the sample was composed by male adult individuals. Regarding the color of the skin, in the comparison between the groups HCV and HIV/HCV, a bigger number of co-infected with black skin and brown-skinned was observed than in the mono infected (P=0,0001). Regarding to the category of exposition for acquisition of the HIV, in the comparison between the groups HIV and HIV/HCV, a significant difference was observed in the transmission through heterosexual exposition, being its frequency bigger in the group HIV (P=0,0000). In the case of the comparison between the groups HCV and HIV/HCV, the difference in the heterosexual transmission was also observed, being its frequency significantly higher in the group HIV/HCV (P=0,0001). About the finding related to the genotype of the HCV, in the comparison between the groups HCV and HIV/HCV, the genotype 1a presented higher frequency in the co- infected (P=0,0001). Regarding to the viral load of the HIV, in the comparison between the groups HIV and HIV/HCV, the group of the mono infection presented bigger viral load that the group of the co-infection (P=0,0350). Regarding to the level of hepatic fibrosis, in the comparison between the groups HCV and HIV/HCV, the group of co-infection has a lighter fibrosis that the group of the mono infection (P=0,0009). Regarding to the genetic polymorphisms of the region 3\' NT of the HLA-G, it was found that the genotype of heterozygosis Del/Ins of 14 pb, presented significant difference in the individuals co-infected by the HIV/HCV (P=0,0216) when compared with the control group. About the SNP +3003, the comparison of the groups HCV and healthy control, it was showed that the allele +3003T presented a significant higher frequency in the group HCV (P=0,0147); the genotype +3003C/T presented a higher frequency in the control group (P=0,0095); the genotype +3003T/T was bigger in the group HCV (P=0,0095). The comparison between the groups HIV and HCV showed that the frequency of the allele +3003C was bigger in the group HIV (P=0,0463); and the genotype +3003T/T presented a bigger frequency in the group (P=0,0494). The frequency of the genotype +3187A/A was bigger in the group HIV/HCV in comparison to the HIV (P=0,0193); and of the +3187A/G was bigger in the group HIV (P=0,0187). The genotype +3196C/G presented frequency significantly bigger in the group HIV than in the healthy control (P=0,0213). The UTR-10, in comparison between the groups HIV and control, showed bigger frequency in the group HIV (P=0,0044); when compared the groups HIV/HCV and HIV, frequency was bigger in the group HIV (P=0,0300) and in the comparison between the groups HIV and HCV, its frequency was also bigger in the group (P=0,0140). The UTR-4, in the comparison of the groups HCV and healthy control, revealed a bigger frequency in the control group (P=0,0147). The UTR-9, in comparison of the groups HIV/HCV and HIV, showed bigger frequency in the group HIV/HCV (P=0,0460). Regarding to the clinical data, the presence of the allele T in the position +3035, was significantly associated to bigger viral load of the HCV, above 400.000 copies /mL (P=0,0244). About the types of genotypes of the HCV, the presence of the allele +3027C was associated with the subtype 1a of the HCV (P=0,0109). Additionally, the presence of the genotype C/C in the position +3027 was also significantly associated with the subtype 1a of the HCV (P=0,0015). Still, the allele A of the SNP +3187 was significantly associated with the other genotypes of the HCV, excluding the 1a (P=0,0369). Although the function of the gene HLA-G, is not totally clarified, studies have been developed for better elucidate its function in the physiological contexts, like gestation, and pathological, such as tumours, transplants, infectious and inflammatory diseases. These studies aim to extend the knowledge about the immunological system and contribute for the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. The results of this study contribute for enhancement of the knowledge about the polymorphisms of the region 3\' NT of the gene HLA-G, in the co-infection HIV/HCV. As well as, in the improvement of the assistance of nursing that must seek reducing the morbid mortality by the pathology referred. However, there is still a long path to be followed in the comprehension of the immunogenic factors involved in the co-infection by the HIV/HCV
