Turner, Christopher Gordon. "NPS TINYSCOPE program management." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/5227.
Full textThis master's thesis introduces the program management and concept of operations of the TINYSCOPE Program. TINYSCOPE is a 6U CubeSat designed as a low-cost and easily replaceable imaging spacecraft that can produce tactically relevant imagery data. Tactical requirements in this context would emphasize "good enough" image resolution with a rapid-response tasking loop and high revisit rate. The TINYSCOPE project intends to demonstrate the utility of small, risk tolerant spacecraft for tactical imagery. The program management section of the thesis discusses the relationships of cost, performance, risk, and schedule and the impact of each on the program. The program's successes and failures are examined to glean lessons for future program managers of university projects. The remainder of the thesis develops a comprehensive concept of operations for the prototype spacecraft. Areas of discussion include overviews of the ground, space and launch segments of the mission architecture, and proposed conduct of operations for those segments. Finally, relevant program management and systems engineering documentation are presented as appendices.

Full textThe topic of this dissertation are noun phrases in German and Spanish. This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter presents the motivation of the work, and in the last chapter a summary is presented and discussed. In the second chapter, I give an introduction into the theoretical framework, Head-Driven Phase Structure Grammar (HPSG) by explaining its fundamental mechanisms, and compare it to generative approaches. HPSG is a surface oriented, declarative, constraint-based framework. In the third chapter, four central syntactic concepts are critically discussed: head, argument, adjunct, and specifier. Although these four concepts are highly relevant in the linguistic literature, they are often interpreted differently. While discussing these fours syntactic relations, I explain the main mechanisms of HPSG to describe them, e.g. the Semantic Principle and the Head Feature Principle. The fourth chapter contains analyses for three different NP phenomena in German and Spanish: case marking, optionality of arguments, and prenominal arguments. German and Spanish differ in the way they mark case on their NPs. German case-marks NPs morphologically, while case marking in Spanish is syntactic. Both types of marking are modelled and compared. Regarding argument optionality, I first look at the verbal domain and use this analysis to model optionality in the nominal domain. The last part of this chapter gives an analysis of prenominal arguments. The following aspects are considered: combinatory of a head noun with different arguments, theta role assignment for the arguments of a nominal head, optionality of arguments and treatment of (in-)definiteness in prenominal genitives.

Full textThis thesis describes the development of a working thermal model of the Naval Postgraduate School's first CubeSat called NPS-SCAT and the accomplishment of environmental testing that has been completed to date in preparation for space launch. The primary mission of NPS-SCAT is to act as a Solar Cell Array Tester (SCAT), providing data on solar cell performance of various solar cells in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). As part of the satellite development process, a detailed test plan was developed and environmental modeling and testing were completed to test SCAT's ability to survive and function in the space environment. A thermal finite element model (FEM) was developed in NX-6 I-deas to analyze and predict the component thermal response to the space environment. Environmental tests, including thermal vacuum (TVAC) and vibration testing, have been completed using profiles determined by the expected launch and on-orbit conditions. The data obtained from these tests validated the thermal model and proved that SCAT would survive the launch conditions and could successfully operate in the space environment.

Abstract: The chromatographic profile of essencial oils Mentha was correlated with their biological activities against Candida dubliniensis using chemometric tools. Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GCxGC-FID) was combined with multivariate data analysis and correlation obtained from the use of tool NPLS-DA (N-way partial least squares - discriminant analysis), making it possible to predict the behavior of new samples of Mentha oil against biological activity by classifying them as active or inactive, without the need to perform the minimal inhibitory concentration test. It was also possible to estimate the major components responsible for the activity against Candida dubliniensis: linalool, piperitona, carvone, pulegone and piperitenone oxide. Thus, GC x GC-FID, when combined with chemometric techniques, may prove to be a powerfull tool for predicting biological properties as an alternative or complement to other techniques. In parallel, GC x GC-qMS was used to perform the identification of two species of leaves of Mentha. Each species was subjected to drying and freezing treatments. Solid phase microextraction through headspace (HS-SPME) was employed for sample preparation with a fiber employing polydimethylsiloxane/divinylbenzene (PDMS/DVB), followed by separation by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with mass spectrometer detection (GC x GC-qMS)

The immediate consequence of the rising nonperforming loans (NPLs) in the banking system can be its failure what translates into a threat for financial stability. Against this background, one of the key lessons of the global financial crisis is that policymakers need to recognize the determinants that influence the buildup of NPLs and monitor them. This thesis intends to assist financial institutions and the macroprudential and microprudential authorities in the recognition of the indicators that contributed to the evolution of the NPLs ratio (NPLs divided by total gross loans) in the period between December 1999 and March 2016. In furtherance of this objective, the impact of several financial indicators on NPLs will be tested and special attention will be given to the financial indicators considered as relevant to explain the NPL ratio in other countries or that indicate the build-up of system-wide risk.

Peng, Gang 1967. "Chinese real estate NPLSs : are they opportunities for US opportunistic investors?" Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/32198.
Full textIncludes bibliographical references (leaves 75-78).
After explosive development during the early 1990s, China now faces an oversupplied real estate market. State-owned banks, the main financiers of these developments, are burdened with vast amounts of non-performing loans (NPLs). As China prepares for its entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), it has begun to reform its finance and banking system. Aiming at transforming the state-owned banks into more commercially oriented enterprises, the Chinese government has initiated a major effort to help the banks resolve their NPLs, many of which have been made to real estate development companies. As in the Savings & Loans crisis in the US, within a short period of time a large volume of Chinese non-performing assets will come onto the market. Due to the lack of opportunities in the domestic market, US opportunistic investors are looking to locate high-return investment opportunities in emerging markets. Asia is one of their major targets. US investors have recently acquired billions of dollars worth of Asian real estate NPLs and are looking for more. Would the Chinese non-performing real estate assets be good investment opportunities for US investors? This thesis attempts to answer that question. The research for this thesis was done in three phases. The first phase is an analysis of the US investors' risk-return trade-offs in Asian real estate investment. The purpose is to understand what the US investors look for when they invest in Asian real estate. The second phase is a comparison of China' s investment environment with the environments in other Asian countries, in order to determine China's relative risk profile. The third phase is a study of the objectives and strategies of China's NPL resolution. The goal is to estimate the level of returns China's NPL sales are likely to offer. Interviews with practitioners, including US fund managers, Chinese developers, Chinese bankers, and Chinese real estate academics are the main sources of information. Theoretical research was also conducted to help understand and analyze the information collected from interviews. The interviews and research lead to the following findings: US investments in international real estate are made primarily by Opportunistic Funds. They seek investment opportunities that offer 20-30% returns. Their targeted investment holding periods are between three and five years. Additional returns will be required for each additional layer of risk. China's investment environment is perceived to be riskier than those of other Asian countries by US fund managers. As a result, opportunities in China have to offer higher returns than those of other Asian countries in order to be equally attractive. China's NPL resolution is not likely to be very effective, due to some fundamental flaws built into the political and economic structure of all state-owned entities, including that of the Asset Management Companies, which were set up to resolve NPLs. The thesis concludes that China's NPL resolution is going to be a slow and gradual process, which is not likely to create immediately many high-yielding opportunities that will meet the expectations of US investors. A more distant future, however, may hold more opportunities as China becomes a member of WTO and as pressure builds on the government to sell-off its non-performing assets.

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to analyze in what way the gaming experience for the gamer is affected by the NPC´s behaviour. NPCs are characters in a game that the gamer himself cannot control. The main purpose with adding NPCs into a game is to create a more realistic world and for them to interact with the gamer. Gaming experience is concerning the emotions and thoughts that the gamer has while playing the game. In order to be able to answer the questions posed in this thesis, questionnaires and observations was conducted to study how the NPCs behaviour affected the players´ gaming experience negatively or positively. During these observations, six different games were tested to see how the players reacted to the NPC´s behaviours and actions. The questionnaire was used as a tool for the players to be able to express their feelings and thoughts about the computer-controlled characters. The result from both the observation and the questionnaire shows that the participating people´s thoughts about the behaviours of the NPCs vary greatly. These differences could be found both concerning one specific game but also between games. On the other hand, there were specific behaviours that the participating people agreed upon. For example, a majority of the people thought that if NPCs did not try to get to the gamer in a more strategic way or if they did not work as a unit, lead to a negative gaming experience for the gamer. The conclusion of this thesis is that creating a NPC who has behaviour traits which suit all types of gamers is a very difficult task. The main focus of a new game in development is to create the best gaming experience possible for the gamer. This thesis shows the importance that the effect of the NPC´s behaviour has on the gaming experience and therefore it is a subject that is important to study more closely.

Randomness is at the heart of today's computing. There are two categorical methods to generate random numbers: pseudorandom number generation (PRNG) methods and true random number generation (TRNG) methods. While PRNGs operate orders of magnitude faster than TRNGs, the strength of PRNGs lies in their initial seed. TRNGs can function to generate such a seed. This thesis will focus on studying the feasibility of using the next generation Naval Postgraduate School Femto Satellite (NPSFS) as a TRNG. The hardware for the next generation will come from the Intel Quark D2000 along with its onboard BMC150 6-axis eCompass. We simulated 3-dimensional motion to see if any raw data from the BMC150 could be used as an entropy source for random number generation. We studied various "schemes" on how to select and output specific data bits to determine if more entropy and increased bitrate could be reached. Data collected in this thesis suggests that the BMC150 contains certain bits that could be considered good sources of entropy. Various schemes further utilized these bits to yield a strong entropy source with higher bitrate. We propose the NPSFS be studied further to find other sources of entropy. We also propose a prototype be sent into space for experimental verification of these results.

Full textThis thesis deals with modal testing and analysis of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Space Truss. A finite element model (FEM) was developed for the truss using a MATLB program called NRLFEMI (developed at the Nava1 Research Laboratory). Analytical predictions of the natural frequencies for this 3.76 meter by 0.35 meter precision structure were calculated using the NRLFEMI code. These calculated natural frequencies were then compared to experimental data collected during modal testing of the truss in the NPS dynamics and Control Laboratory. Through analysis, the predicted results of the measurements (from the FEM) were satisfactorily correlated to the experimentally obtained results, validating the FEM program. Additionally, a technology demonstration of Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors (FBGSs) was performed. These laser etched, fiber optic sensors are ideally suited for real time evaluation of load, strain, vibration, and other health monitoring functions of structures
