Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the sixteenth century, chronic wars and a high concentration of towns made the Low Countries one of Europe's prime laboratories for innovations in military architecture and urbanism. The 1553 inspection tour of the region by engineers Giovanni Maria Olgiati and Sebastian van Noyen marked the assimilation of “Italian-style” fortifications into Netherlandish practice and the transition there from defenses with bastions to proper bastioned systems. Olgiati and Van Noyen's joint tour is well documented through a dozen design drawings now held at the Vatican Library, Turin's Archivio di Stato, and Madrid's Palacio Real, as well as a closely related atlas in Turin and complementary archival records. As Pieter Martens discusses in Planning Bastions: Olgiati and Van Noyen in the Low Countries in 1553, these materials, including many hitherto unknown plans, provide new insights into the design process, offer a unique panorama of the Low Countries' border defenses at this critical moment, and illuminate the genesis and spread of bastioned fortifications in Europe.

Abstract:

Abstract:

In 1919 Florence Fleming Noyes founded an annual summer camp in Cobalt, Connecticut, creating a space for a community of women to explore a danced somatic practice influenced by the Delsarte tradition, Charles Wesley Emerson's theory of creativity, and the popular notion of rhythmic expression. Among the camp traditions that have been preserved for nearly ninety years is “Saturday Night,” an evening of impromptu, vaudeville-style performance in an all-female, nonpublic context. This paper explores the function of Saturday Night as a community-building practice both historically and within the contemporary context of Noyes summer camp culture.

Abstract:
The Noyes and Lysholm knee scoring questionnaires, commonly used for follow-up assessment after knee surgery, were developed based on knees with preexisting pathologic changes and have not been standardized to normal knees. We administered both questionnaires to normal subjects. Any subject reporting a history of injury or surgery to either knee, or preexisting knee pathologic changes, was excluded. From a total of 492 knees evaluated, 418 knees (253 male, 165 female) qualified for statistical analysis. The average age of the group was 17.6 years (range, 13 to 25). For male subjects, the total Noyes and Lysholm scores averaged 99.10 (range, 68 to 100) and 99.10 (range, 77 to 100), respectively. For female subjects, the average Noyes and Lysholm scores were 97.82 (range, 72 to 100) and 97.16 (range, 75 to 100), respectively. The 95% confidence interval computed for each of these groups did not contain the maximal value of 100. The female athletes reported significantly lower total scores than the male athletes on both questionnaires. For the Lysholm questionnaire, the male athletes scored significantly lower than the maximum in all categories except support and stair climbing, and the female athletes scored significantly lower than the maximum in all categories except limp and thigh atrophy. The range of scores found in this highly selected, “normal” population exemplifies the need for more accurate instruments in the evaluation of knee surgical outcomes.

Abstract:
Pierre des Noyers, secretary of Queen of Poland Louise-Marie Gonzaga, is known for his role as a messenger, envoy, court journalist and sometimes propagandist. His work as an unofficial diplomat for the Queen and ambassador for France is less famous though no less interesting. Even though he was already quite involved in these time-consuming tasks, Pierre des Noyers also acted as a scientific intermediary for the quite curious Queen Louise-Marie of Poland. He maintained contacts with many scholars from France and Italy. He could nurture this network thanks to his position as an informal diplomat at the court of the Queen and his dedication to science in general. Even by discarding his most official and political letters, his known correspondence amounts to several hundred letters written in a period of around 50 years to various friends and scholars. Roberval, Gassendi, Boulliau, Hevelius or Pascal are among these contacts and he plays for most of them the role of a scientific intermediary sharing with them observations, books and anecdotes. His letters are filled with astronomical observations, prodigies and prophecies. Des Noyers was also a practitioner of science. Having possessed a rather large collection of scientific instruments he always sought the improved ones and his daily life was marked by scientific studies. He wrote meteorological bulletins for Academia del Cimento in Florence, studied the measurement of time, observed the sun and showed interest in the inner workings of the human body. This article will delve further into more scientific aspects of Pierre des Noyers’s life, both at the court of Louise-Marie and outside. The first part presents a rough overview of the secretary’s contacts in the scientific environment of 17th Century France and how they were used to connect scholars from Poland with this environment. The second part of this work presents Pierre des Noyers’s practice of science as a tool to understand the world and for which utmost diligence in measurement and practice is required. The last part focuses on des Noyers’s application of this scientific method in two, now pseudo-scientific fields: astrology and divination.

Abstract:
The study of drug release dynamic is aiming at understanding the process that drugs release in human body and its dynamic characteristics. It is of great significance since these characteristics are closely related to the dose, dosage form, and effect of the drugs. The Noyes-Whitney function is used to represent how the solid material is dissolved into solution, and it is well used in study of drug dynamic. In this research, aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)) has been encapsulated with different grades of chitosan (CS) varying in molecular weight (Mw) for the purpose of controlled release. The encapsulation was accomplished by ionic gelation technology based on assembly of positively charged chitosan and negatively charged sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP). The encapsulation efficiency, loading capacity, and drug release behavior of aspirin loaded chitosan nanoparticles (CS-NPs) were studied. It was found that the concentration of TPP and Aspirin, molecular weights of chitosan have important effect on the drug release patterns from chitosan nanoparticles. The results for simulation studies show that the Noyes-Whitney equation can be successfully used to interpret the drug release characteristics reflected by our experimental data.

Abstract:
The aim of this research work was to develop the controlled release of two model drugs i.e. water insoluble drug - resveratrol and water soluble drug - lignan by matrix tableting with an eccentric tablet machine. For this purpose different kinds of polymers i.e. Metolose 90 SH-4000® (HMPC), Fetocel RT-N-100® (EC) and Eudragit RLPO® (polymethacrylate) were used. The matrix tablets containing 2 %wt of a model drug which were mixed with 5, 10, 20, 30 and 50 %wt of the polymers mentioned above. In addition, a glidant composed of 1 %wt talc and 1 %wt magnesium stearate as well as a filler Ludipress® were processed. Different physical properties of the powder mixtures (e.g. flowability) and of the tablets (e.g. hardness, uniformity of mass or drug content, drug release, etc.) were determined. Most of the tablets met the physical requirements. If the polymer content got higher the release was slower, which can be confirmed by the lower values of k. The release kinetics were described by three typical mathematic models i.e. biphasic, Noyes-Whitney and KorsmeyerPeppas. The best fitting results were ordered as follows: biphasic > Noyes-Witney > KorsmeyerPeppas.

We have reviewed the observational data for ∊ Eri to derive our best estimates of luminosity, radius, temperature, composition, and age, as well as the uncertainties associated with each of these. These quantities are then used in stellar structure models to try to reproduce the global oscillation frequencies observed by Noyes et al. We find that we can reproduce the observed frequencies and splittings at least as well as the computations of Guenther and Demarque, yet for significantly different stellar parameters, most notably the age.

Abstract:
Survey of hymenoptera parasitoids of pink-hibiscus-mealybug, Maconellicoccus hirsutus (Green, 1908) infesting Hibiscus rosa-sinensis was conducted in two municipalities of state of São Paulo, Brazil from August 2016 to August 2017. Nine species of chalcidoid wasps were obtained: Anagyrus kamali Moursi (1948); Anagyrus sp. aff. mirtesae Noyes and Menezes (2000); Anagyrus sp.; Bothriocraera bicolor Compere and Zinna (1955); Cheiloneurus sp., Gyranusoidea deionae Noyes (2000); Prochiloneurus sp. (Encyrtidae); Aprostocetus sp. (Eulophidae); and Chartocerus sp. (Signiphoridae). Anagyrus kamali and G. deionae were the most frequent species, corresponding to 67.26% and 22.62% of the parasitoids, respectively. Bothriocraera bicolor, Chartocerus and G. deionae are recorded for the first time associated with M. hirsutus. Gyranusoidea deionae and B. bicolor are recorded for the first time in Brazil. The seasonal study of M. hirsutus and its parasitoids was carried out in January to December 2017on 16 hibiscus plants, aligned in the hedge in the experimental area of the FCAV/UNESP in Jaboticabal, SP. For this purpose, ovisacs, nymphs and adults of mealybug were counting on infested plants and the adult parasitoids collected in Möerick traps. Maconellicoccus hirsutus was observed during the periods of January-March and October-December, with the highest infestation in January and February. In the traps, a total of 92 specimens of pink-mealybug parasitoids were obtained: 65% belonging to A. kamali and 35% to G. deionae.

Abstract:
Despite the increasing use of technology in the developed world, most computer communications still take place via a QWERTY keyboard and a mouse. The use of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) whereby individuals can ‘talk’ to their computers has yet to be realised to any great extent. This is despite the benefits relating to greater efficiency, use in adverse environments and in the ‘hands-eyes busy’ situation. There are now affordable ASR products in the marketplace, and many people are able to buy these products and try ASR for themselves. However, anecdotal reports suggest that these same people will use ASR for a few days or weeks and then revert to conventional interaction techniques; only a hardy few appear to persist long enough to reap the benefits. Thus, it is our contention that ASR is a commercially viable technology but that it still requires further development to make a significant contribution to usability. Admittedly, there are some very successful applications that have used ASR for a number of decades, but these are often characterised by relatively small vocabularies, dedicated users and non-threatening situations; typical applications are in offices (Noyes & Frankish, 1989) or for disabled users (Noyes & Frankish, 1992). Given that Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) could employ ASR with limited vocabulary and dedicated users, the use of ASR in this application is considered here. The principle difference between ASR for AFV and previous applications is the environmental conditions in which the technology will be used.

Abstract:
Backgroundhealthy lifestyle is known to prevent the progression of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). Despite contemporary improvements in RMD clinical care, the management of lifestyle factors has received less attention. Underlying causes may be the lack of awareness and insufficient evidence, but patient and physician education may also play a role.Objectivesto collect and review currently available materials for health promotion on lifestyle factors for people with RMDs across Europe and to assess their implementation needs.Methodsmaterials on lifestyle factors (diet, weight control, physical activity, work participation, alcohol consumption and smoking) were collected from health professionals in rheumatology and patient associations through EULAR and EMEUNET channels.Results38 materials from 11 countries were retrieved (Table 1), including North, South, and Central European regions. Documents (22) or leaflets (12) were the most frequent materials. The most reported factor was diet (23) followed by physical activity (17), whereas information on work participation was scarce [2]. The materials were more commonly focused on rheumatoid arthritis (8), although documents for people with RMDs in general were also frequent (12). Only eight materials included scientific references. Although 23 materials contained some kinds of recommendations, only two were evidence-based, whereas the rest contained general statements. Materials were mostly available in the official national language, and 16 were accessible on the internet, whereas no information on accessibility or reach was obtained for the remainder.Significant limitations across implementation domains (process model, determinant frameworks, and evaluation) were observed, mostly due to flawed knowledge generation, poor identification of barriers and facilitators, and lack of evaluation frameworks.Table 1CountryMaterials (n)Factors covered (n)RMDs covered (n)Supportive referencesRecommendations (n)ExtensionLanguageAccessAustriaPaperLeafletDietGout (and hiperuricemia)YesYes (evidence-based)6 pages2 pages + figure10 languagesOnlineCroatiaDocuments (3)DietSSc (1)OA (1)RA and gout (1)NoNo20-40 pagesCroatianUnclearItalyLeafletDietRMDsNoNo12 pagesItalianUnclearLithuaniaDocuments (2)Leaflet (1)Diet, smoking, alcohol, physical activity(various combinations)Gout (1)SLE (1)RMDs (1)NoNo (2)Yes (general) (1)2-28 pagesLithuanianOnline (1)Unclear (2)MoldovaDocuments (6)Lifestyle (general)Gout (1)PsA (1)RA (1)SSc (1)SLE (1)SpA (1)YesYes (general) (5)No (1)2-33 pagesMoldovanOnlineNorwayDocumentLifestyle (general)RMDsNoNo2 pagesNorwegianUnclearPortugalDocuments (7)Diet, smoking, alcohol, physical activity(various combinations)PsA (1)SpA (1)AIJ (1)RA (1)SSc (1)SLE (1)SS (1)NoNo19-28 pagesPortugueseUnclearSloveniaLeaflets (6)Diet, weight, smoking, alcohol, physical activity(various combinations)RMDs (3)SpA (1)PsA (1)RA (1)NoYes (general) (6)2-27 pagesSlovenianUnclearSpainVideo (1)Document (1)Website (1)Weight, diet, physical activity, smoking and work adaptations(various combinations)Lifestyle (general) (1)RA (2)RMDs (1)NoYes (general)2 minutes (1)62 pages (1)Website (1)SpanishOnline (2)Unclear (1)SwedenLeaflets (4)Videos (4)Diet (1)Smoking (1)Physical activity (1)Diet (1)RMDs (4)NoYes (general) (4)4 pages (4)10 minutes (4)SwedishOnlineTurkeyDocuments (2)Physical activity (1)Diet (1)RMDs (1)RA (1)NoYes (general) (2)20-288 pagesTurkishUnclearConclusionalthough materials on lifestyle factors were common, they were not always available at the national level across Europe. Current materials are hallmarked by a lack of consistency in formats, layouts, content, focus, lack of scientific evidence and patient involvement. Major impediments for implementation were found. These findings will inform the implementation of EULAR-endorsed recommendations on lifestyle factors for people with RMDs.AcknowledgementsWe thank HPR, PARE associations and EMEUNET for their collaboration in collecting informative materials on lifestyle factors accross European countries.Disclosure of InterestsNone Declared.
