Full textNoye's Fludde is an unusual intergenerational opera by Benjamin Britten. Professional adults and amateur children together sing and play this adaptation of the Chester Mystery Play. The audience participates by singing three hymns with the cast. The resulting community experience is a lovable work for children and also a well-crafted work of twentieth century music. Passacaglia, polytonality, dodecaphony, and the influence of Japanese Noh drama and Balinese gamelan all link this work to the rest of Britten's oeuvre. It is powerful a powerful tool for music education and faith formation. American performances have declined steadily since the 1970s. The score is still quite useful, but some requirements, such as the recorder section, are increasingly difficult for contemporary productions to fulfill. Because Noye's Fludde is a unique learning and faith experience, this study advocates more frequent productions by a variety of American institutions, even if adaptations are necessary. A biographical sketch of Britten is followed by a chapter introducing Noye's Fludde, including the roots of the libretto, musical influences, reception, and performance history. Chapter three provides analysis of the opera, first by examining the central role of the hymns as motivic generators for the entire work. Tonality in large and small dimensions, the influences of Britten's recent trip to Asia, and his fondness for repetitive forms (passacaglia, theme and variations, canon) are analyzed next. Chapter three concludes with a Julius Herford-style structural analysis. Britten scored flexibly, allowing local communities to adapt as needed. Chapter four addresses the hesitation that potential conductors may feel about modifying or adapting the work. By observing the score, his alterations during Noye's Fludde and similar circumstances throughout his career, and his important Aspen speech of 1964, this study demonstrates that adaptations to casting or scoring are appropriate and were expected by Britten. The closing chapters provide a practical guide to Noye's Fludde. Because of the variation in skill levels involved, the technical requirements of each vocal and instrumental part are outlined in chapter five. Chapter six offers strategies for rehearsal and teaching the opera.

Full textThe principal pigments of the walnut wood were identified as being gallic and ellagic acids derivatives. Condensed tannins (flavonoïds) would play the role of precursors of the wood colour while being degraded in brown red pigments of phlobaphenic nature during the formation and the maturation of heartwood. Hydrojuglone glucoside (glucosylated and reduced form of juglone) can be regarded as a major precursor of the walnut wood colour while being (i) completely degraded during the formation of heartwood, (ii) degraded, in vitro, in brown black compounds comparable with the native oxidation products of the heartwood. Moreover, these compounds could be partly responsible for the colour changes occuring during steaming treatment

Full textThe study of phenology is primordial to understand tree response to climate change. Although many studies have examined shoot phenology, the difficulties in observing root system growth have resulted in a poor understanding of root phenology. As root system dynamics are considered as playing a major role in carbon cycling and sequestration, it is necessary to overcome methodological difficulties, so that root demography can be studied in the field and over several years. Our first objective was therefore to develop and evaluate methods for studying root system growth in the field. Studying mature hybrid walnut (Juglans L.), growing in agroforests, We showed that smartphone scanners are the best adapted tool for acquiring high quality images of tree roots growing in field rhizotrons. However, time-lapse cameras were good alternatives when a fully automated method was required (up to 4 months autonomy). Our second objective was to determine the main drivers of walnut hybrid root growth in field conditions. In particular, (i) We hypothesized that shoot and root phenologies were asynchronous, (ii) We evaluated the effect of environmental factors on root growth along a latitudinal gradient comprising three climates (Mediterranean, oceanic and continental) and (iii) We determined how phenology and environmental factors influenced root dynamics depending on root morphology and topology. Results show that flushes of fine root growth are not synchronized with budburst and leaf expansion, but are synchronized with stem and coarse root radial growth. Soil temperature was on the whole the main driver of root growth, and to a lesser extent, soil humidity, but which had contrasting effects on root growth. Root topological order had a major influence on root response to environmental variables, reflected in root elongation, production and longevity. Results will be highly useful not only for a better understanding of the role that root systems play in the carbon cycle, but also for tree ecophysiological models. Future studies should expand the knowledge gained here into a global understanding of the drivers of tree root initiation, growth and longevity, through the creation of databases and the use of meta-analyses

Full textThe study is principally based on the charters of Noyers's benedictine monastery, completed by the acts of the neighboring abbeys. It is limited to the eleventh and the twelfth centuries since most of the texts concerned that region located in the south west of Indre-et-Loire, a small area at the crossroads of Touraine, Anjou and Poitou. First we analyzed the mutations of the sources, and then we determined that the settlement process of the area had started early. It began in the tenth century and intensified in the eleventh. In the twelfth developments became scarce. Finally we described the rise of the power of the lords whose existence had been testified since the tenth century. The research carried out on the main local families revealed that the distinction between lords and knights tends to disappear at the end of the twelfth century

Full textDynamic models of root systems should link the pattern of carbon allocation to different parts of the root system and the efficiency of belowground resources capture. Such a model could predict the dynamic growth of root systems in 3D heterogeneous soils. We present such a ‘parsimonious’ model with only six parameters, based on the voxel automata approach. Evidence for the need of such a model was provided by a field study of the spatial root distributions of two tree species, hybrid walnut trees (Juglans nigra x regia cv NG23) and hybrid poplars (Populus euramericana cv I214) cultivated with or without the competition with winter intercrops in southern France. Tree root distributions in the agroforestry plots were much deeper than those observed in the forestry plots, and/or extended laterally beneath the crop zone. More evidence of root plasticity was provided by pot experiments with heterogeneous substrates, or by enriching a small patch in water and/or nitrogen inside the container. The voxel automaton simulates both fine and coarse root growth, and automatically generates its topology. Both the control of ‘genetic’ and environmental factors are incorporated in the root growth process. Container experiments and a split-root experiment were used to parameterise the model for hybrid walnut trees (Juglans hindsii x regia) and wild cherry trees (Prunus avium L. ). The estimated parameter values for walnut and wild cherry trees allow the voxel automata model to be used to predict root patterns of both tree species in various heterogeneous soil experiments. For this purpose, an integration of the root model into a model of tree growth is necessary

Full textMeasurements on experimental silvoarable agroforestry plots (mixed tree-crop) showed exceptionally high productivity, with yields more than 30% higher compared to the separate crop and tree systems. We developed a 3-D process-based model (Hi-sAFe) and used it to (1) test if the spatiotemporal integration of resources sharing (light, water, nitrogen) between species could explain this productivity and (2) assess how agroforestry design or management may affect this productivity. We developed a novel method for the analysis of simulated data to identify and sort the processes determining yield by order of importance. The model was parameterized and calibrated on a hybrid walnut / durum wheat located on the Restinclières field (Hérault, France). After a detailed analysis of the functioning of this system, we explored by virtual experiments its response to design choices: (1) phenological traits of associated species, and (2) density and location of trees on the plot. The comprehensiveness of the Hi-sAFe model provides a new insight into the functioning of agroforestry systems. It clarifies the complexity of the real system. Our results put forward a deterministic interpretation of the performance of each species and of the total productivity of the crop-tree association (Land Equivalent Ratio). The analysis of virtual experiments offers practical ways for optimizing agroforestry systems

Full textContrary to their Alsatian, franciliens or auvergnats counterparts, the stone castles of northern Burgundy remain ignored. Nevertheless, they deserve interest, whether it is from a historical, geographical, architectural or archaeological point of view. Due to the lack of comprehensive studies on Burgundian castles, this study will use of an already well documented site to create a reference site. Various opportunities, which the realization of archaeological excavations drove us to choose that of Noyers-sur-Serein to bring to a successful conclusion this initiative. It is based on many documents including narrative sources, inventories and 61 countable registers dating from 14th and 15th centuries. Archaeological documentation is lacking because the site was completely destroyed at the end of the 16th century, but it is based nevertheless on the excavation of two towers and a section of curtain. This study approaches the castle in several scales. In a wide scale, in its territory as in a fine scale, in its details. It also approaches underestimated aspects as the buildingyard

Full textThe goal of this work was to characterize the roles of two transcription factors (AGL12 and CrMYC2) during the morphological and metabolic differentiation occuring in walnut somatic embryos and Catharanthus roseus cell suspensions. Overexpression of the Agl12 gene from Arabidopsis thaliana enhances the rooting abilities of walnut somatic embryos. C. Roseus transgenic cells expressing this gene are grouped in globular body and biosynthetize ajmalicine. Taken together, these results suggest that AGL12 plays an important role in root differentiation processes. The CrMYC2 transcription factor, which interact with the G-box localized within the Str gene promoter, is rapidly and transiently induced in C. Roseus cells in response to a treatment with a fungal elicitor or methyl jasmonate. The expression of CrMYC2 in transgenic cells has no significant impact on the regulation of the Str gene expression but seems to have an inhibitory effect on the expression of the Dxs and Chs

Universidade Federal de Pelotas, 2008. http://repositorio.ufpel.edu.br/handle/ri/2099.
Full textSpecies of the genus Eucalyptus hosting several species of insects of the family Psyllidae. Among them, the specie Ctenarytaina eucalypti (Maskell) (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) is considered the most harmful, causing damage to culture wherever it has been introduced. To control these hemiptera phytophage, treatment with insecticides proved to be costly and unsustainable. But the entrance of the pest in our country, has been with their natural enemy specific Psyllaephagus pilosus Noyes (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae). Accordingly, this study had as main objective to check the occurrence of C. eucalypti and its natural enemy P. pilosus in commercial plantations of Eucalyptus globulus; their fluctuation population; its biology and define a methodology for creation. When studied in the laboratory, the temperature of 22 ± 2°C, photoperiod of 12 hours and relative humidity of 60 ± 10% C. eucalypti completed the full cycle in 39.49 ± 6.4 days, and 8.83 ± 1.71 days for hatching eggs, and 30.67 ± 6.08 days of nymphal development, the survival of adults was on average 6,19 ± 3,06 days for males and 6,50 ± 3,88 days for females. It was found that C. eucalypti puts the eggs in the armpit of the early leaf shoots still closed. Nymphs of all instars form colonies in the shoot, leaving most of the time property with the stylus inserted in the plant. The droppings are removed in the form of bubbles or droplets that spread over the colony. The floating population was evaluated through 27 collections held fortnightly. The total of 54,160 individuals was catalogued insects. Of these, 51,119 (94.4%) were C. eucalypti, and most nymphs, total parasitoids found was 3,041, of which 73.40% corresponded to the mummies. You can see that the population of psilídeo increases when the temperatures begin to become more mild, or from the month of July. With the growth of population density of the insect-pests increases the availability of food for the parasitoid, which with its population that has increased, leading to a fall of two populations and a level of balance in a very small population level, until, according to the low level of parasitoid population, the pest again recover its population, becoming a cyclical 9 process. The longevity of P. pilosus was recorded assessing up 100 adults at a temperature of 25 ± 1°C, resulting in an average of 9.48 ± 6.37 days.

Full textDuring infection by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the virus crosses the nuclear envelope (NE) to invade the host genome. HIV gets access to the nucleus by passing through the nuclear pore complex (NPC). However, the underlying mechanism is not fully understood. It was recently described that SUN1 and SUN2, structural proteins of the inner nuclear membrane, play a role in the nuclear import of HIV. Modulating the levels of SUN1 or SUN2 inhibits HIV infection, revealing that the virus depends on a sweet-spot of SUN protein levels in cells. Intringuigly, increasing SUN protein levels in various cell types doesn’t impact cell viability but causes deformation of the nucleus and ruffling of the NE.We observed that overexpression of SUN1 and SUN2 led to reduced infection by both HIV-1 and HIV-2 in HeLa cells, primary monocyte-derived macrophages and CD4+ T cells, with the last two being physiologically relevant HIV target cells. We further validated that SUN proteins and Cyclophilin A (CypA) functionally interact in HIV infection.A strain-specific selectivity was observed in the fact that SUN1 shows stronger restriction of HIV-1 while SUN2 preferentially inhibits HIV-2. These preferential antiviral activities were mapped to the N-terminal, lamin-binding domains of SUN proteins. However, endogenous lamins are not required for SUN-mediated antiviral activity.By using lamin A/C knock down cells as a positive control of nuclear deformation, no simplistic correlation between deformation and infection was found: The absence of lamin A/C, unlike SUN1/2 overexpression, showed no anti-viral activity. Instead, we identified properties that were unique to SUN1 overexpressing nuclei: reduced chromatin mobility and a reduced DNA damage signature. We find that induction of exogenous DNA damage is beneficial for HIV-1 infection (but not HIV-2) in cells. This is not the case for SUN1 overexpressing cells where additional damage does not lead to increased infection, suggesting that SUN1 modulates HIV infection downstream of the DNA damage events.Overall our results suggest a role of SUN1 in modulation of nuclear dynamics, with subsequent interplay with the DNA damage pathway, that leads to control of productive HIV-1 infection

Full textThrough the cultural history of the walnut and the walnut tree in the Occident, it is all the relationships between past societies and the vegetal world that are being examined. What did these societies know about the walnut and the walnut tree ? What did they do with this tree and its fruit ? What did they think about it ? How did the walnut and the walnut tree capture the human imagination ? What beliefs and symbols emerged from those conceptions ? It has been possible to answer those questions through the development of a new methodology that takes into account the long-term history and an interdisciplinary approach, inherent to such a subject. Thus, through the analysis of various primary sources from numerous disciplines such as botany, medecine, the history of food, archeobotany, mythologies and religions, popular literatures or proverbs, a cultural history of the walnut and the walnut tree has been elaborated. This history offers a walk, through sources and centuries, from roman Antiquity to the XVIIIth century, and reveals the major developments and shifts regarding knowledges, uses, mentalities and sensibilities concerning the walnut and the walnut tree in the Occident

This memoir presents two algorithms which goal is to determine the direction of arrival of wideband acoustic sources. The first algorithm, called Source Elimination Method, eliminate the contribution of every source from the covariance matrix to improve the estimation of the direction of arrival estimate of echoes in a low echo-to-noise ratio. The second algorithm, called Multiple Signal Classification with Phase Focalisation, uses the information contained in the phase of every frequency to find the direction of arrival of wideband sources. The combination of the two algorithm permits to find the direction of arrival of two echoes, which power is - 17 dB compared to the main source, up to an echo to noise ratio of -15 dB. Experimental results confirming the precision of these algorithm are presented.

Full textA. Malraux and saint-exupery, both of them existentialist authors have been searching for a the essence of man so as to establish the meaning of life in terms of space and time. If malraux considers that it is tenacity which makes a man, saint-exupery believes on the contrary that man can only achieve himself by participating in an ideal community. The meaning of life lies in the very act of selfconsciousness which, solely, confirms the greatness of being (human). This very act also allows the understanding of the absurdity of life
