Abstract:
Although the destabilization of journalism’s epistemic authority has been widely discussed, one critical element has been underexplored—the role of place. For journalists, claiming provenance over “where” has enabled control over a domain of knowledge, and one key means for doing so has been through news cartography, now rendered digitally. However, digital news cartography (digital news maps) exposes journalists’ epistemic authority to new challenges, from reliance on big data collected by others to maps about journalism itself that show journalists’ diminished authority over place. The case of digital news maps offers a chance to interrogate how journalists know what they know and how they know it and, more broadly, begs the question of how place and mapping must be considered in new media research.

The first general overview of the geology of Greenland to be presented in the form of a map was the 'Tectonic/geological map of Greenland' published by the Geological Survey of Greenland (GGU) in 1970 at a scale of I:2 500 000. This wall map proved very popular, and stocks were exhausted in 1990. A new Geological map of Greenland at the same scale (Escher & Pulvcrtaft 1995) has now been prepared: this presents a wealth of new information, including a representation of the geology of offshore areas.

Abstract:
Eratosthenes (circa 276 B.C.–194 B.C.) is considered a famous scientist of ancient Greece. He was a mathematician and geographer. Born in Cyrene, now Shahhat (Libya), he was appointed to teach the son of the Egyptian King Ptolemy III Euergetes. In 240 B.C., he became the third chief librarian the Great Library of Alexandria. Eratosthenes laid basics for mathematical geography. He was the first to calculate precisely in an original way the Earth meridian's length between Syene and Alexandria. For this purpose he used perpendicular projection of the sun rays during summer solstice (06.22) near the town Syene, now Aswan. His estimation of the length of the Earth's radius (6300 km) is close to present estimation (6371 km). He calculated that a year possesses 365.25 days. He also emphasized the significance of maps as the most important thing in geography. Eratosthenes was the first one to use the term “geographem” to describe the Earth. In this way he legitimized the term of geography. He also put into system geographical information from various sources in order to obtain a map of the world as precise as possible.

Abstract:
[Abstract]: Mapping agencies, national and regional, are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain the currency of their suite of map related products and services. These products include topographic maps and the provision of up to date topographic data. The maintenance of this socially important spatial information is at issue through the duplication of effort that presently exists within government agencies at all levels. A dedicated data sharing and topographic maintenance program has the potential to solve all of these issues. The "NOW Map" gives the "map hungry" public the ability to obtain spatially located data and products in time frames and formats of their choosing. This system is capable of delivering consistent, dynamic and contemporary geospatial information. It will be flexible, in response to a modern ever-changing society, and capable of providing up to date topographic maps and data that not only meets current standards, but also continually exceeds them. After the development of initial procedures, a pilot study was conducted to expand and further refine data collection and analysis procedures. This was followed by a final data-gathering research phase. The research used relevant local, interstate and international examples in all areas of the study. The outcomes of the pilot study and analysis of the second research segment demonstrated that maps can be maintained more efficiently through the utilisation of accurate up to date information. These topographically significant updates can be provided incrementally by organisations that maintain data as part of their own core business.

Abstract:

Kearney, Helen L. "Mapping modernity : the London Postal Map of 1856." Thesis, Royal College of Art, 2017. http://researchonline.rca.ac.uk/2813/.

Full text
Abstract:
The London Postal Map was introduced in 1856. It drew a boundary around London, and then divided the city into ten districts: EC, WC, N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W and NW. It was a technological innovation that greatly increased the speed and efficiency of the movement of post around London, in a period when the postal service was the primary form of communication. Service became incredibly quick, frequent, and accessible; almost as instantaneous as the internet today. Deliveries began at 7.22am, with deliveries on the hour, every hour throughout the day. Letters posted at 7.30pm in central London would reach outer London suburbs that same evening. This thesis considers a period from 1830 until 1918, corresponding to the period of the beginnings of the Map’s story, to a major change in the Map during the First World War. It describes the origins of the Postal Map, and then explores its effects in the context of a rapidly developing city. It speculates on meanings of mapping the city where new names and boundaries are introduced and visualized. It investigates the development of the city, understanding the post as an essential part of London’s infrastructure. It considers how people experienced a city in which millions of letters, thousands of postmen, and hundreds of mail carts were moving each week. The Postal Map is argued to be one of the causal factors of modernity within London; it meant urban space was linked to a particular temporality – modern, fast-paced, connected. It changed how Londoner’s conceived their city through providing a new framework for labelling places in relation to each other, stating what was east, what was west.   The project uses the extensive archives held by the Postal Museum, which include hundreds of maps, to tell the story of the Postal Map. It combines methodologies from social history, technological and administrative histories, mapping theory, urban planning history, and design history to gain a rich understanding of the full spatial implications of this designed object: the London Postal Map.

Abstract:

Hidalgo, Alexander. "The Indian Map Trade in Colonial Oaxaca." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/301765.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes the practice of making indigenous maps and their circulation in Oaxaca from the late sixteenth to the early eighteenth century. Indian maps functioned as visual aids to distribute land for agriculture, ranching, subsistence farming, and mining, they served as legal titles to property, and they participated in large-scale royal projects including aqueducts and assessments of human and natural resources. Map production is examined from four distinct vantage points including social networks, materials and technology, authentication, and reproduction. In each case, maestros pintores--native master painters--collaborated with a host of individuals including Spanish officials, scribes, merchants, ranchers, farmers, town councils, caciques and lesser lords, and legal professionals to visually describe the region's geographical environment. Indigenous mapping practices fostered the development of a new epistemology that combined European and Mesoamerican worldviews to negotiate the allocation of natural resources among the region's Spanish, Amerindian, and mixed-race communities. This work stresses the role of Indian painters in the formation of early modern empires highlighting the way mapmakers challenged Spanish ideals of visual representation instead re-envisioning spatial relations according to local and regional concerns.

Abstract:
Abstract Descriptive and spatially-explicit information on fisheries plays a key role for an efficient integrated management of the maritime activities and the sustainable use of marine resources. However, this information is today still hard to obtain and, consequently, is a major issue for implementing Marine Spatial Planning (MSP). Since 2002, the Automatic Identification System (AIS) has been undergoing a major development allowing now for a real time geo-tracking and identification of equipped vessels of more than 15m in length overall (LOA) and, if properly processed, for the production of adequate information for MSP. Such monitoring systems or other low-cost and low-burden solutions are still missing for small vessels (LOA < 12m), whose catches and fishing effort remain spatially unassessed and, hence, unregulated. In this context, we propose an architecture to process vessel tracking data, understand the behaviour of trawling fleets and map related fishing activities. It could be used to process not only AIS data but also positioning data from other low cost systems as IoT sensors that share their position over LoRa and 2G/3G/4G links. Analysis gives back important and verified data (overall accuracy of 92% for trawlers) and opens up development perspectives for monitoring small scale fisheries, helping hence to fill fishery data gaps and obtain a clearer picture of the fishing grounds as a whole.

Full text
Abstract:
Through thickness measurement of residual stresses is now undertaken routinely for complex welded components. To predict residual stress distributions finite element (FE) simulations of the welding of the component are also carried out using well established codes, with the simulations sometimes validated via measurements. Measurements are usually undertaken at locations where it is judged that the peak residual stresses occur. Therefore comparisons are often confined to limited locations. But this raises the question whether the simulated residual stresses at other locations are correct. To explore this, the work reported in this paper relies on introducing measured residual stresses into an elastic FE model of the welded component. These stresses are mapped into the model at the measurements locations. Then the FE analysis redistributes the initial stresses, with an iterative process introduced to ensure that the measured stresses are retained during redistribution. Examples are shown where agreement between measured and weld model predictions are good at the measurement locations and both the measured and weld model predictions satisfy global equilibrium. However, they do not agree at other locations. It is argued that additional measurements at other locations are required to validate the FE models of welding processes.

Abstract:
The need to develop an accurate, autonomous, and economical pipeline mapping system capable of use within a wide range of pipeline sizes, configurations, operating pressures and specific uses was accomplished, resulting in the manufacture of a series of unique inertial-based smart probes. This paper reviews the innovative technology developed to identify, map and plan for the management and integrity of pipeline assets through use of the smart probe technology. Today’s owners and operators of the world’s pipeline infrastructure are faced with competitive pressures and regulatory constraints which are creating increasingly stringent demands to manage our pipeline assets in an efficient and responsible manner. Billions of dollars will be spent over the next 20 years to rehabilitate the world’s infrastructure and oil and gas pipeline systems. “Out of sight – out of mind” no longer applies. Now, more than ever, pipeline owners and operators need solid information to plan for the challenges of tomorrow.

Abstract:
Abstract To improve the overall “absolute” positioning accuracy for the industrial manipulator, it is indispensable to calibrate its kinematic parameters. In conventional studies, researchers have focused on Denavit–Hartenberg (D-H) parameters. However, until now, for industrial manipulators, the absolute accuracy is significantly poor than its repeatability. In this study, we propose a new kinematic model of a 6DOF (degrees of freedom) industrial manipulator with the angular positioning deviation “error map” of each rotary axis. The angular positioning deviation is modeled as a function of command angular positions, as well as the rotation direction to model the influence of backlash. We also propose a method to identify the angular positioning deviation of all the rotary axes by using a laser tracker.

Abstract:
Engine performance is a result of the interaction between individual components. Any deviation from the design geometry does not only affect the flow locally, but can also lead to significantly altered whole engine performance. Specifically for Low Pressure Turbine (LPT) vanes, erosion and subsequent refurbishment can lead to considerable changes in geometry. Following vane refurbishment, the part’s effective flow area may be measured and adjusted to meet turbine nozzle matching requirements for the engine build. Other parameters such as pressure loss and outlet flow angle are not evaluated, but rather assumed equivalent to a new part. Consequently, a large portion of vanes is rejected only after engine test, making it an expensive process. A new methodology is presented here that promises to reduce the cost of acceptance tests by predicting the performance of an engine with a refurbished vane. It follows a multi-fidelity approach involving experimental testing, zero-dimensional cycle modeling and three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Baseline performance maps of the LPT stage with varied vane geometries are generated using CFD. The obtained performance maps are incorporated into an engine cycle model. A multiple map feature for the cycle model was developed for this purpose. It enables accessing a plurality of stored maps representing a single LPT. Using performance parameters derived from test data of the isolated vane, a performance map is generated through interpolation of the baseline maps. The expected engine performance can now be readily predicted, and a well-founded decision on acceptance of the refurbished vane made.

Abstract:
A creep Deformation Mechanism Map (DMM) of an engineering alloy can be an effective tool for developing physics-based prognostics systems. Many classical diffusion based rate equations have been developed for time dependent plastic flow where dislocation glide, dislocation glide-plus-climb and vacancy diffusion driven grain boundary migration (diffusion creep) are rate controlling. These creep rate equations have been proven experimentally for simple metals and alloys and form the basis of constructing an Ashby’s DMM. Long term creep testing and analysis of complex engineering alloys has shown that power law breakdown phenomenon is related to the dominance of Grain Boundary Sliding (GBS) as opposed to diffusion creep. Rate equations are now available for GBS in complex alloys and, in this paper, a DMM is constructed for a fine grained Alloy 718 and this is validated by comparison with a collection of experimental data obtained from the literature. The GBS accommodated by wedge type cracking is considered dominant at low homologous temperatures (0.3 to 0.5Tm i. e. melting temperature in Kelvin) whereas GBS accommodated by power-law or cavitation creep dominates above 0.55Tm.

Abstract:
This paper describes how operational data from heavy duty gas turbines can be used for component map generation. The main aspects described are the data evaluation and validation process, the applied degradation correction methodology and the component map generation using calibrated streamline curvature methods for compressor and turbine. The operational data storage system of heavy duty gas turbines can be used, in case the customer agreed to provide the data, for fleet statistics, degradation behavior investigation or component map generation. The update of existing component maps using operational data is mainly necessary for older gas turbines types since the available numerical gas turbine models do not always represent the current state of knowledge. The process of generating component maps based on operational data requires several steps which are explained in detail in this paper. The first step is the data evaluation and validation part. This step is based on a full thermodynamic evaluation including an evaluation of systematic and random uncertainties for all required performance parameters. This generated dataset is then validated using a combination of a Kalman Filter based single fault isolator and a fuzzy logic based multiple fault isolator. A short performance evaluation of this data validation system is given as well. After the validation part the operational dataset is corrected for aging effects regarding compressor and turbine performance in order to get the new and clean component characteristic. Subsequently, a validated and aging corrected high quality database for the component map generation is available. The applied steps as well as a direct comparison for the compressor efficiency prior and post aging correction are displayed. In the following steps, already existing streamline curvature methods (SCM) for compressor and turbine are adapted to the generated dataset using a probabilistic based calibration process. The applied optimization technique is identical for compressor and turbine, but two different approaches for the calibration of the loss modeling have been implemented. The compressor SCM is calibrated with a minimum set of modified loss parameters which are modeled as a function of load. For the turbine, the modifications of the loss coefficients are constant over load. This requires an increased set of loss parameters for calibration compared to the compressor. The calibration results for both components are presented and discussed in detail. The calibrated SCMs can now be used for the component map generation in order to yield high quality component maps in accordance with current fleet experience even for older gas turbine frames.

Abstract:
Abstract Feature modelling is now being used quite extensively in the context of manufacturing of parts. It is shown that the use of features in product models, instead of geometric information only, can be very useful in assembly as well. This is done by introducing two types of assembly features, handling and connection features, and by outlining their usability in several assembly planning modules. It is also shown that in assembly feature modelling the concept of internal freedom of motion can be profitably used. Internal freedom of motion can be represented with visibility maps, which can be transformed using the central projection method. An extension of the central projection method, projecting a visibility map onto a cube, is described.

Anshariy, A. "The Importance of Identifying the Evidence of Hydrodynamic Trapping for New Well Placement in Mature Offshore Stupa Field." In Digital Technical Conference. Indonesian Petroleum Association, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.29118/ipa20-g-93.

Abstract:
To predict the hydrocarbon limit and new well placement for future development in the mature Stupa field, hydrodynamic trapping analysis is carried out to find a solution of “tilted” contact hypothesis. The static and dynamic data of 6 exploration wells and 12 development wells were used to recognize the evidence of hydrodynamic trapping. There are multiple pieces of such evidence for hydrodynamic trapping such as variation in fluid contacts, lateral reservoirs drainage and variation of water pseudo potential. This paper will describe identification of tilted gas – water contacts related to hydrodynamic trapping mechanism plays, to predict and map the tilted contact using “u” map as a limit of the field and how a tilted gas-water contacts map leads for opportunity to identify future well development. It is concluded that the hydrodynamic trapping is working in the Stupa field. A new limit of hydrocarbon accumulation as a result of tilted contact mapping using “U” map has significantly changed the field development strategy in the Stupa field. The West Stupa Panel has now become the new target location of future field development for prolonging the production life of the mature Stupa field. At the end of 2019, one development well was drilled at the north flank of West Stupa Panel and showed very good results, which unlocked the remaining gas potential of this panel. Following this positive result, 3 other wells are proposed to develop the remaining stakes in this panel. Identifying the evidence of hydrodynamic trapping and mapping the tilted gas – water contacts had opened new opportunities for further field development in flank areas of the mature gas Stupa field.
