Urban Bioethics
M.A.
Maternal Health requires a bioethical evaluation to thoroughly address and reduce the troubling statistics and events of pregnancy-related complications and maternal mortality. Maternal mortality affects African American women three to four times more than any other race, therefore presenting race as a factor. Types of experienced racism and the overall scientific pathway are explored in relation to the health of African-American women. Race-related stress and its association with adverse maternal health outcomes is an important issue to consider when evaluating the maternal health complications. In addition, addressing the result of unethical inequalities in the healthcare system in combination with other societal contributions is essential when trying to recognize its impact on the experience of pregnancy. This thesis explores the impact of racism on maternal outcomes and health of African-American mothers, beyond the commonly understood influences of other socio-economic factors.

Bhagat, Heeten. "Speculative indigeneities: the [k]new now." Doctoral thesis, Faculty of Humanities, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/31517.

Full text
Abstract:
The starting point of this research study began with a broad and unwieldly question - what would Zimbabwe look like if colonisation didn’t happen? This question arose with regard to the launch of the Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Act (IEEA) in 2007 and is focused of on building an understanding of notions of indigeneity in Zimbabwe through an inquiry of indigenousness and indigenisation. The methodological approach is designed as an interdisciplinary and experimental research inquiry that processes these debates and proposes an expansion of the probabilities of notions of indigeneity within the range of existing socio-political, economic and historical analyses of indigenousness and indigenisation in Zimbabwe. This exploration begins with a broad historical, anthropological and etymological survey of the term 'indigenous’ that is interwoven with a contextual account of Zimbabwe and its socio-political lifespan. The primary site of investigation is the independence-day ceremony that took place at the National Sports Stadium in Harare, Zimbabwe on the 18th of April 2017. This focus is motivated by two distinctive elements at this event - a banner that declares 'ZIMBABWE WILL NEVER BE A COLONY AGAIN’ and a fragment from the president’s speech that asserts, 'we can now call ourselves full masters of our destiny’ (Mugabe 2017). This event stands as a crucial node for the debates and questions this research aims to pose regarding notions of indigenisation, indigenousness and registers of indigeneity. Political and socio-economic analyses of this annual ritual tower above the lacuna of analysis of its performance logics. This performance-specific inquiry aims to contribute new meanings and complexity around the event. The information generated from this reading is further processed through the mechanisms of speculative research as a way to think beyond the dilemmas and paradoxes that emerge from the historical, anthropological and performance analyses of this event. The penultimate chapter of this dissertation suggests a conceptual rehearsal of the findings generated through an expanded understanding of queer theory. The final articulation of 2 this research investigation extends the experimental approach, presenting a set of visual, aural and sculptural elements as the conclusion. The dissertation offers alternate readings of notions of homogeneity and singularity. It is also constituted as a way to understand the probability of building new knowledges through lateral and rhizomic processes as a journey that gathers and synthesizes from across a number of disciplines. The contention of this thesis, then, is to suggest an expansion of the notion of indigeneity towards the possibility of polygeneity, a notion that aims to align with the conceptual constructs of cosmopolitanism (Appiah 2006, Kleingeld and Brown 2014), which engage arguments for expanded understandings of contemporary identity formation. Embodied in this suggestion of polygeneity lies the potential to revive notions of dynamism and creativity that have been dormant since the onset of European colonisation in Zimbabwe. In the wake of the 'new dawn’ in Zimbabwe, in this moment of growing debates for alternatives, the thesis finds its impulse in the imperative for radical and creative shifts in consciousness to activate new ideas, new readings, and new knowledges.

Abstract:

Includes bibliographical references (pages [47]-49).
Architecture is the matter through which we domesticate the boundless spatial extent and embrace ourselves from the indefinite temporal progress of existence. Through architecture, not only do we mark our spatial boundaries, but we also indicate our temporal becoming and existence. However, historically, the temporality of space has only been studied through the lens of history and the temporality of the present moment and now-time is typically ignored in architectural studies. This thesis is an attempt to evoke the importance of temporality of space in architectural design process and is an effort to bridge the gap between spatial features and their neglected temporal aspects. The criteria for architectural design should not only be limited to spatial features; but also, should echo the temporality of spatial features in perceptual scales such as minutes and hours. Throughout this research, I initiate an interdisciplinary investigation of different models of temporality and temporal perception. I also run a series of pilot studies in which the perception of time is assessed in relation to non-geometric and geometric spatial features. I demonstrate the effects of lighting as a fundamental non-geometric spatial feature and shape as a basic geometric spatial feature on the temporality of space. The initial results suggest that brightness of light as a non-geometric spatial feature and shape of a room as a fundamental spatial feature alter the perception of time within a space and affect the duration judgment.

Abstract:
As part of the broader research project ‘Linking Japan to the world through the Performing Arts’ [JP20K01193], this paper explores the symbolic worldview evoked by the Japanese Noh theatre, Zen Buddhism, together with a contemporary iteration of Noh, set in cyberspace. This research draws on historical sources, and ethnomusicological perspectives gained through firsthand experience in learning to perform traditional Noh in Japan, and in producing contemporary, educational English language Noh-style plays in Fukushima and Tokyo between 2018–2021. I consider the complex semiotic resources combined in Noh as semiotic clusters (SC), to understand how such signs of imagination, identity, and experience connect people to their lifeworlds (Turino 1999). Concurrently, an English language production of Noh in cyberspace also points towards more dystopian aspects of the digital turn, exacerbated during COVID-19, such as sensorial multimedia floods and resultant ‘technological unconsciousness,’ for which Noh, Zen, and ‘now,’ understood as heightened consciousness in the present, may offer a curative offline alternative in the search for new symbolisms in a contemporary Asia.
