Abstract:
A two-phase diagnostic framework based on hybrid classification for the diagnosis of chronic disease is proposed. In the first phase, feature selection via ReliefF method and feature extraction via PCA method are incorporated. In the second phase, efficient optimization of SVM parameters via grid search method is performed. The proposed hybrid classification approach is then tested with seven popular chronic disease datasets using a cross-validation method. Experiments are then conducted to evaluate the presented classification method vis-à-vis four other existing classifiers that are applied on the same chronic disease datasets. Results show that the presented approach reduces approximately 40% of the extraneous and surplus features with substantial reduction in the execution time for mining all datasets, achieving the highest classification accuracy of 98.5%. It is concluded that with the presented approach, excellent classification accuracy is achieved for each chronic disease dataset while irrelevant and redundant features may be eliminated, thereby substantially reducing the diagnostic complexity and resulting computational time.

Full text
Abstract:
Naive Bayes (NB) is easy to construct but surprisingly effective, and it is one of the top ten classification algorithms in data mining. The conditional independence assumption of NB ignores the dependency between attributes, so its probability estimates are often suboptimal. Hidden naive Bayes (HNB) adds a hidden parent to each attribute, which can reflect dependencies from all the other attributes. Compared with other Bayesian network algorithms, it offers significant improvements in classification performance and avoids structure learning. However, the assumption that HNB regards each instance equivalent in terms of probability estimation is not always true in real-world applications. In order to reflect different influences of different instances in HNB, the HNB model is modified into the improved HNB model. The novel hybrid approach called instance weighted hidden naive Bayes (IWHNB) is proposed in this paper. IWHNB combines instance weighting with the improved HNB model into one uniform framework. Instance weights are incorporated into the improved HNB model to calculate probability estimates in IWHNB. Extensive experimental results show that IWHNB obtains significant improvements in classification performance compared with NB, HNB and other state-of-the-art competitors. Meanwhile, IWHNB maintains the low time complexity that characterizes HNB.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the criteria weights of outsourcing and their key role in ranking outsourcing suppliers. Design/methodology/approach A new hybrid multi-criteria decision-making approach merges three tools, namely, decision making trial and evaluation (DEMATLE), fuzzy analytic network process (FANP) and ordinal/cardinal data envelopment analysis (DEA) model. Afterwards, experts’ opinions were gathered from a Pipe and Fittings company. Finally, their opinions were incorporated in three-stage approach for outsourcing suppliers’ selection. Findings The findings of this study show that among the selective criteria for outsourcing, business development, focus on basic activities and order delays are the three most important criteria. Also, the proposed approach ranks suppliers to facilitate decision making for selection. Research limitations/implications The number of suppliers, selection criteria and the number of members of the respondents’ team have been identified as some of the limitations of the present study. Practical implications The study has significant and practical implications for the managers and for the organizations which have to choose top suppliers, particularly in the case of dealing with numerous and qualitative/quantitative criteria. Originality/value This paper proposed a new three-stage approach that incorporates outputs of previous as inputs of next stage to increasing results accuracy. Also, it showed that by incorporating results of FANP method into DEA model, key role of experts’ opinions as a qualitative and quantitative criteria can be caused by increasing flexibility of decision process.

Abstract:
Abstract Casuarina equisetifolia is an important tree species in the tropical and subtropical zones of Asia, Africa and the Pacific. There is an increasing interest in producing intra- and inter-specific hybrids of casuarina species. Conventional bagging controlled pollination method yielded very low fruit set and poor seed germination. High temperature and humidity in the pollination bags appeared to have instigated unfavorable conditions for pollination and fertilization mechanism. In this study, a novel approach was developed by conducting pollination in closed chambers which functioned like pollination bags. Fruit set and seed germination rate increased from 7.0% to 89.9%, and 8.1% to 51.8% respectively compared with the conventional bagging controlled pollination method. Based on the results, a controlled pollination glasshouse with 10 separated chambers has been designed to produce multiple hybrid combinations in a single pollination procedure.

Abstract:
The paper deals with the purpose of one hybrid approach for solving the constrained two-dimensional cutting (2DC) problem. The authors study this hybrid approach that combines the genetic algorithm and the Tabu search method. For this problem, they assume a packing of a whole number of rectangular pieces to cut, and that all cuts are of guillotine type in one sheet of a fixed width and an infinite height. Finally, the authors undertake an extensive experimental study with a large number of problem instances extracted from the literature by the Burke Benchmarks and the Beasley Benchmarks in order to support and to prove their approach and to evaluate the performance.

Abstract:
This paper describes a hybrid approach to handle disassembly sequence planning for maintenance. The product under maintenance is first modeled using a novel hybrid graph known as Disassembly Constraint Graph (DCG) which embodies complete disassembly information and can be used to prune the search space of disassembly sequences. Subsequently, a novel Tabu-enhanced GA engine is invoked to generate the near optimal disassembly sequences. A case study was used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The details of the DCG, the TS-enhanced GA engine and the fitness function used are presented in this paper.
